Great professor! He is passionate about teaching, extremely professional and a professor who cares. His tests are fair and you learn a lot. If you are engaged, you will not be disappointed. He is really good!
He is a very fun professor and doesn't make me dread coming to class or discussion. He is very nice and friendly. As a teacher I think he is also good, he gives harder examples in class that if you can do and understand will prepare you for the exams. I don't know why students expect to become experts after one lecture. I feel my grade is my fault.
He is a textbook reader in math course. Instead of teaching math, he goes on a tangent wasting class time like asking how to say a word in another language, what we are doing this weekend. He doesn't make appointments for office hours so good luck getting help. No curve. HW is hard cause he doesn't show examples in class.
This professor does not have any lesson plans and he is very unclear on his explanations. He pulls up the textbook and rarely shows any examples. He mumbles at the board and it's really hard to understand anything he is saying. His class has no curve. Please do yourself a favor and do not take this professor.
Great professor! Expect a heavy use of the book, you have to work, but Dr. Protsak but he gives great classes and many examples that prepare you well. He knows very well what he teaches, and he is also very approachable. His class made me reason, understand, and even enjoy differential equations! A brilliant guy.
I took Dr. Protsak for Diff EQ last semester. I liked him a lot. He is very caring and if you take the time to talk to him after class he's a pretty cool guy. He definitely knows his mathematics too.
This guy is a mathaMAGICIAN. 11/10 would take again.
The BEST Professor at UIC! I took Math 181 with him as a discussion professor. He clearly explains all the material.
Victor Protsak is a math demi god. He explains theorems and demonstrates procedures in a very crystal clear way. He is also very organized and Blackboard savvy. He is kind but at the same time challenging. His exams are hard but straight forward. Great sense of humor and very passionate about mathematics. I was lucky enough to have him as a discus
I appreciate how he makes attendance 3% EC. But like, he's really bad at teaching. He focuses on things that are not important, and takes too long on insignificant things. He does get off topic sometimes which can be good (lectures get dry). But considering that this class is very easy, it says a lot that hes a bad teacher for an easy class.
Take Shulman or Olga! His lectures are disorganized and unprepared. He only posts half his notes online, forcing you to come to class. The class is inherently easy, but he makes it 10x more difficult. Unlike the other 310 professors, his midterm and quizzes are harder than normal. Esp for engineering students, it isnt worth it to take him
DO NOT take this class with this professor as he is terrible at explaining basic concepts that you learn later on. Also, he rambles on about random topics not relating to the lesson of the day. Finally, he gives out exams and quizzes that take more time to complete than the 15 minutes given. Overall bad teacher making an easy class hard.
Spends most of this class time reading from the book. Doesn't explain anything in detail or spends time on stuff that doesn't matter. Always goes over class time but during test he kicks us out early. Quizzes and Midterms are unnecessarily hard compared to other professors.
The class was not fun at all.
He wastes so much time during class reading the book and not doing any practice problems. Quizzes too hard for the given time, TA was also very rude.
This is considered by many to be a very easy class but this teacher makes it very difficult. This teacher is very bad at lecturing and rambles on about random stuff in class instead of showing how to so example problems. The teacher grades very hard too. The only thing that he is good at is tongue twisters so ask him about those.
Professor is not good at explaining concepts, and the TA is rude to other students. Class is disorganized, dull, and hard, even though Math 310 should be a relatively easy class. The quizzes and the midterms are challenging and more often than not, you will not have enough time to complete all of them especially the midterms.
this is the worst class I've taken, makes the class so much harder than it needs to be. very thick accent. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THIS CLASS IS A WASTE OF EIGENSPACE. IF YOU DONT NUL, YOU WILL FAIL.
horrible grader, lose so many points for making a very small mistake. would not take again. A MASSIVE WASTE OF EIGENSPACE
He spends the entire period with his back to the class doing problems on the board without much explanation. Pop quizzes every week, so you have to show up for at least the beginning of class. One pro: the exam grading was very fair with lots of partial credit.
Dr. Protsak is a helpful, clear, concise, and entertaining professor in the subject of differential equations. His class piqued my interest and well prepared me to take both MATH 480 and 481 with confidence of receiving a good grade in the following semesters.
So victor is a solid professor. He offers a ton of extra credit if you attend ALL lectures. He posts a ton of past exams and quizzes, so you know exactly what you need to prepare for the exam. He is very organized, lectures clearly, and even changed his material to be more engineering student friendly as of Fall 2019. Would take again!
I understand that COVID made it difficult to learn and teach, but how this professor went about teaching this course is a real failure. All this class is is homework. You will have to teach the material by yourself because his online video lectures are too difficult to understand. And his tests are frequent and brutal, only 50 min too. Good luck :/
Took him for MATH220, Diff EQ. Pros: charismatic, clearly passionate about what he does, good sense of humor. Cons: spends more time deriving and explaining the backstory of some equations than he did explaining the equations themselves. Almost always goes beyond the allotted time.
Very difficult!
Online lectures are pre-recorded and difficult to understand, so no real-time questions. Exams are very frequent and only 50 min to complete.
The experience is horrible. I'm not even done with this class yet and here I am. Test timer is too short for an online math test. Material is hard to understand. Tests throw the most random unexpected questions at you instead of what you actually expect. Takes forever to go through study material because theres way too many and they aren't labeled.
ROUGH. Had pre recorded lectures that were extremely long and used pre written text to solve math problems. Since he didnt solve the math problems as he went it is really hard to follow. Majority of the class ended up not watching lectures after the 2nd week. Had live sessions once a week and were 50 minutes, so it was rushed. TAs got me through
Where do I begin... this class was miserable at best. The professor creates more lecture videos per week than number of days you are in class. Its a MWF class, yet sometimes there are 4-5 lectures all above 50 minutes, sometime over an hour long. Also there is a test every other week. You will basically teach yourself everything through YOUTUBE.
The amount of videos we had to watch for this course was inappropriate. For a 3 hr course we had to watch more than 3 hrs of course materials. The fact that this is a math course and we had to look off PowerP. to figure out how problems were solved, and even worse being read to. only 50 mins for exam. Do not recommend, take this course else where.
this professor really killed my self worth when it comes to math. The class is incredibly hard and his asynchronous lecture slide show doesnt help at all. Be ready to take and submit a 5problem test within a hour every two weeks, weekly MML, and the occasional survey. hes an ok guy but the TAs really save the course this semester
Honestly the worst math class ive ever taken. Unfair course structure with little benefit of the students during a pandemic. Too many exams for no reason! Submitting an exam even a second late will guarantee you a 0, so be sure that doesn't happen to u and submit timely. Lastly you're better off learning yourself because this class is disorganized.
I took math 220 with him online and it was a complete disaster. For starters a majority of your grade depends on biweekly test(100 points) w/a time limit of 50 minutes, this includes scanning and uploading to gradescope. These test consisted of 5/6 questions but every test had at least 1 question(30 or 25 points) not on the HW or barely disscussed
Worst class ever. Biweekly exams that were way too hard and we only had 50 minutes to complete it. Homework assignments are extremely tedious and don't even relate to the exams. I basically had to learn everything on my own because the lecture videos were confusing and made no sense. It's a miracle that I even passed with a B given how hard it was.
I took him in Fall 2020 for an online DiffEq course. In one word, he is "horrible". He uploads a tons of long and non-sense lecture videos. There are seven module tests throughout the semester that are worth 10 % each (60 min to do the problems and scan) and a final exam that is worth 20 % of your final grade (2 hours). DO NOT TAKE HIM!
The bi-weekly tests are insane because the week of a test you can't study the new material because you're busy studying for the test. His lectures are old, I think from the Summer. His lectures are powerpoint, he doesn't really explain things well and his slides have a lot of errors. He seems nice but you really have to teach yourself the material.
Worst professor I've taken at UIC. Others have already explained why it was bad.
Gives lot of exams and homework assignments, can be somewhat hard to follow. Very nice and tries to be friendly to class and make it enjoyable. Doesnt give very good lectures, but his example problems are very helpful
He gives a lot of homework that could take hours every day and exam are difficult. There is no study guide but old exam that "could" help on exams. It was very stressful taking this class.
I am glad to be in Prof. Protsak's class. Every lecture is organized and clearly explained. He answers students' questions in detail, and seems enthusiastic about teaching. If you do your homework, attend lectures, ask questions, then you're almost sure to do well in his class. I recommend taking his session. As a bonus, he is also funny.
I took his synch online classes. Yes, there's a lot of content to have to go through (lots of homework, biweekly exams, every lecture's important), but considering online classes, I appreciate it. A lot of graded works mean a lot of buffer (especially since he drops your lowest test and homework grades), and a lot of practice. You'll need to work.
After reading review on here I was very weary of taking his class, but I am so glad I did. Yes, the class is difficult, but in my experience, math classes are incredibly boring. He always found a way to keep class entertaining and as long as you put the work in outside of class, you will do just fine.
Amazing professor. Prof. Protsak is trying to make his lecture interesting by engaging with students. Even in the online format, he always read our comments during lecture and responded. Biweekly tests helped me not fall behind. In his class, if you do your homework diligently and come to class, you should get an A.
He had me cheesing many times this semester. I was excited to wake up in the morning just to see his face. Not only is he a great teacher, but he was also an amazing artist who touches your soul. The class was a bit difficult, but it wasn't too bad if you did the homework and paid attention. Would take again.
Dr. Protsak is a funny guy, always finds a way to make class entertaining
The worst Math Professor you could possibly have. The final exam is really difficult so get ready to lower one letter grade.
Professor Protsaks class isnt easy. But he gives you all the tools to succeed. If you put in the work to attend lecture and get your assignments done on time, you will do well in this class. Professor is also really funny and kind, which made the class enjoyable even with the difficulty of the material. I highly recommend taking this course!
His lectures are amazing, hes always willing to answer any of your question. As long as you participate in the class and do not skip the homework, you will be fine. An A is not easy to get in this class but it is possible if you get enough practice before the exams, so make sure you do the practice exams or past exams before your actual exams.
Standard UIC math class, weekly homeworks and mymathlabs, 2 midterms and a final exam. Overall takes a lot of work, but an A is doable.
His lectures are badly organized. He, the TA, and the book all have different methods of doing problems. He goes kind of fast. Not the worst, seems nice, not a fan of his teaching style.
There are only a 3 50 minute lectures per week, so you do have to do a bit of independent study or peer teaching, but if if you do the work and practice, it's not the hardest math class out there.
The class has a lot of hw (mylabmath and written) and only 3 exams (2 midterms and a final) but the weekly quizzes, weekly homework (written), and access to materials from previous years provide enough practice for you to do good on the exams. Lectures can get boring and aren't even necessary (he sometimes repeats lessons) but are required.
Weekly written homework, in class quizzes, MLM homework, and discussion sections. The homework deviates from the book and the lectures. You will spend hours attempting to complete it because it mixes various topics together that aren't covered jointly. The homework is also a poor indicator of what shows up on tests; averages were 62%, 65%, 55%.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! He makes homework assignments and exams very difficult and grades them extremely harshly.
He makes mistakes during lecture, and is incompetent at teaching.
Some people love him, some hate him. I enjoyed his class a lot!
Lots of homework, is disrespectful to students, continues to lecture 5-10 minutes after class is over, I'm sure some people used his lectures but I did not find them helpful and pretty much taught myself this course
Protsak gets off-topic way too much, and falls behind in lectures. He can be reasonable, but gets testy sometimes and is passive-aggressive.
The class itself isnt that difficult when you pay attention in class, take notes, and do the homework on time (written due thursday and online due sunday). Yes he does get sidetracked a bit and is occasionally late/ends class late so plan accordingly. He is an entertaining and very knowledgeable professor so if you pay attention, youll be alright.
Does get off-topic occasionally, but he talks about interesting things or applications of the work. His lectures go by quickly because of this teaching too, while getting the learning experience.
Great professor, He might be tough on grading and provides a lot of HW. But the HW helps a lot with getting ready for exams. Definitely would take again.
Prof Protsak is simply OK. He wastes a lot of class time with irrelevant topics, he is VERY passive aggressive, he is a mask autocratic. Mandatory attendance, weekly written homework, weekly my lab, weekly discussion, & weekly quiz. His TA's are good tho. I wouldn't take him again tho because I personally found him to be insufferable.
During lectures he talks fast, writes fast and messily it is difficult to keep up. He also often goes 5 minutes past class end. Homework is fine though, along with quizzes, which helps us prepare for the exams.
He goes off topic and always wastes a lot of time at the beginning of class. As a result, he's always at least a few minutes late to finish class. His lectures are hard to understand and his handwriting is very messy. The class is difficult, but if you put in enough work, you can get an A. It moves fast though, especially at the end.
This professor is almost always late for class, rude, and explains concepts in a complex and unhelpful way. He often wastes time during the already limited time during lectures. He refused to take attendance at the end of class for those whose acadly apps didn't work. I would recommend avoiding this professor.
Assigns a substantial amount of work but with drops, which can sometimes be challenging. However, he's a harsh grader and what's more, he doesn't show much sympathy for students facing difficulties. One of the biggest downsides is the limited time he allocates for exams, which is quite stressful.
Protsak is the final boss of the UIC Mathematics department. You're gonna have to work very hard to succeed. In regards to his lectures, he speaks softly but carries a big stick. He has accessible office hours and will happily help you one on one. He's a very funny professor though and he dresses very formally everyday. Study hard and pass.
He is a hilarious and good professor. Always starts class with "Good afternoon!!! Welcome to MATH 220, Introduction to Differential Equations, how are you guys doing today? And those of you in the back?" He applies differential equations to real world examples. His writing is a little hard to read but he cracks good jokes. Helpful office hours.
Was so lost and confused this entire class. In his lectures, he only really does examples, he does not explain much of the basics that you need to solve a problem. A few myLab homework assignments and one quiz a week.Overall, very vague and this class requires you to do a lot of teaching yourself the material.
This professor: starts new examples 4 minutes before class ends that go past the end of class, has unreadable handwriting, gives very time-consuming and labor-intensive written homework. Let's you use 3, 8" x 11", note sheets front and back on exams. First midterm average was 66% even with these note sheets. This should tell you a lot.
Protsak knows his math and he's a pretty good professor in calculus 3. He does good visual drawings to explain concepts and does a good combination of practice problems in review and the theory. He's a pretty funny guy and can crack good jokes too!
Would not recommend. His handwriting is abhorrent and students have to ask multiple times during lectures to clarify what he writes. Attendance is taken using an app which people (not me personally) have had trouble with. He also keeps lecturing 5 minutes after the class period ends. Sometimes he's funny, which saves him from getting a score of 1.
This professor has uploaded several homeworks late. Instead of doing the common sense thing, i.e. giving us an extension due to his incompetence, he still makes it due on Thursday. Today is tuesday at 3PM. HE JUST UPLOADED THE HOMEWORK AND IT IS STILL DUE ON THURSDAY.
Protsak is great for this course. He knows what he's talking about and does a good job of visualizing/explaining the material. Though, he usually starts class 3-5 minutes late and ends 3-5 over. He also tends to go off topic and tell stories (which are a little interesting). Pay attention and engage in lecture and you can easily get an A.
Protsak is a very nice professor, but you will see the same complaints across all comments. His hand writing is very poor which makes it difficult to follow, he gets off topic a lot and only does 2-3 example problems in lecture. Discussion is very important because that is where you will get most of your learning done.
His hand writing is bad and he teaches fast, makes it hard to follow lecture.
Lectures were fast and handwriting was sometimes hard to read. He had a few brain breaks so you do not get overwhelmed by information. He also stops frequently for questions, so clarifications can be made if necessary. He was optimistic when coming to answer questions. Also, he offers a lot of resources on Blackboard to use for your benefit.
Protsak is one of those teachers that will start his lecture late by a couple minutes and extend it over the end timing for possibly 10 minutes. He also doesn't explain much of the lecture just rushes through it. After doing one question he usually does a poll wasting another 3-5 minutes, then proceeding with his “Rush through the class” behavior.
Protsak is a sorry excuse of a professor. If you get him for Calc 2 you should just drop the course. He wastes 20/25 mins of each lecture on polls on Acadly and discussions of non-calc related topics. When he realizes he hasn't actually taught anything when there are 5 mins remaining he quickly scribbles down on the paper while everyone leaves.
Wouldn't recommend. Usually don't review but his teaching method is terrible and his handwriting is atrocious. Take Will Ash if possible.
He's a nice enough person but he does not teach whatsoever. Everyone I know in his class watches another professor to catch up to the course. Wastes the entire class on one question and is constantly behind every other section. Starts rushing through important content AFTER class has ended and people are walking out. Careless and irresponsible.
If you can avoid taking this professor please do. He goes through lectures really fast but also talks about stuff that has nothing to do with Calculus. He consistently goes overtime and overcomplicates every single lecture. He is a sweet and unintentionally funny guy but you will learn nothing about Calculus if you take his class.
Goes off topic then teaches 5 minutes after lecture ends and speeds through everything, didn't learn much from him and had to learn mostly everything outside of class to get an A.
Differential equations is not that bad as long as you consistently study and memorize the procedures to solve problems. However, his handwriting is terrible and he tends to post the homework late but not extend the due date. His accent makes him kinda hard to understand. He's nice and has a good sense of humor but not the best instructor.
He is a very sweet person. However, I would not take another course with him again if I could. You have to do much of the learning outside class, which is understandable. However, I didn't like watching other professors' lecture videos to understand a class I was just in 20 minutes ago. Be ready to watch many YouTube videos and go to discussions.
Take a class with anyone else, too much time is spent on polls on useless topics. I wouldn't mind this if it weren't for the fact so much of class is taken up by this. I couldn't really understand him, generally with his thoughts and explanations and more so did the problem and asked if it made sense. He was rude and unhelpful.
Writing is very bad Cannot see clear Paper writing , paper goes away very fast
His handwritting is horrible, didn't explain the concept clearly at all. He has been spending a ridiculous amount of time on unrelavent polls in class. I know a lot of friend ending up simply just skipping his class because they find its useless to go to the class. Avoid taking his class at all cost, you'll learn nothing from him.
Not a good professor. I took both his 180 and 181 course. I didn't necessarily struggle with either class, but attending his lectures are the worst. He doesn't explain the content really well. He's usually behind compared to the other professors. To top it off he has a really thick accent making it sometimes hard to understand what he's saying.
My goodness, he is so hard to understand whether it is his handwriting and he is a jumbled mess. He uses polls in class which makes no sense. He also wastes a lot of time in the beginning. Save yourself the trouble!
Try to avoid taking any classes with this professor. He's a nice and funny guy but his handwriting is sloppy and has a very heavy accent. When you can't understand what he's saying you can't read it either. He expects the class to interact with him a lot throughout the lecture. I would say that the live streams are very helpful. Discussions matter!
One of the worst professors I have had yet. He has a very thick accent, is weird about class attendance, and treats you as if you are a high schooler. Also, he cannot give notes well at all. It is sloppy and he overcomplicates all of the material so you are left more confused when you leave the lecture. He is also always behind on lectures.
Hard to understand- not very good at teaching. His handwriting is so sloppy i was fighting for my life. I stopped going to lecture and began watching youtube videos because it was so confusing to learn from his lecture. He also cold calls a lot
It's hard to understand his Eastern European accent when he talks fast, and he will cold-call students when no one participates. Sometimes gets passive-aggressive about no one wanting to sit towards the front.
Would go over class time every lecture. A lot of students had to leave to catch the bus to go home he would get mad if you left when he wasn't done. He would spend so much time in 1 question without explaining. His handwriting is awful. He would do polls during class that had nothing to do with math. Wouldn't teach if you weren't enthusiastic.
Holy cow, he is really bad and wastes your time.
The worst professor I have ever had. Many people feel it in the same way so his lecture is always empty. Do not pick him if u wanna succeed in Math.
I do not understand some comments here: Protsak a great! He is intelligent, and a funny guy who really makes efforts to communicate with his students. The class was challenging (there were quizzes and homework every week, but his skills and enthusiasm) made it all rewarding. He is also good when you talk to him. I think he is a great professor!
I have had some time to reflect to be able to give my professor's fair reviews. I cannot even begin to think about the unprofessional manner of Professor Protsak. He spends the first 5-10 minutes of class with mindless videos (taking away time from lecture material). His work is sloppy, the lectures were not engaging, and he has a rude demeanor
You won't learn math for the first 10 minutes and you'll leave 5 minutes past the time slot unless you decide to leave early
To be honest, whether you got a good grade from him or not. He will waste your time, he makes no sense at all.
He's honestly not as horrible as some say. Yes he does waste time every now and then with irrelevant videos and polls on Acadly but he still teaches you everything you need to know to pass the class. The biggest thing I can tell you, is to do the study guide for the exams. The actual exams are basically copy and paste of the study guide.
He is genuinely not a good teacher. He doesn't start class on time, makes unfunny jokes, dilly dallies and then rambles on for 10 minutes after class ends. His accent and handwriting are not understandable at all. I didn't learn anything in that class and barely got through with ChatGPT teaching me. Do NOT take him for any math
Everyone I know who has taken one of his classes dislikes him, not only as a professor but also as a person. He made everything difficult by wasting our lecture time with useless topics and having illegible handwriting that resembles hieroglyphics. Everything I learned came from YouTube, Chat GPT, and his TAs, who are as great as he is horrible.
Lectures were very confusing. He has a thick accent that is hard to understand and his hand writing is not legible.
He does not provide good explanations, and there is a lot of studying to do outside of class. A lot of the harder concepts I needed to learn on my own time. Discussion was the only useful part of this class.
Do not take this Professor unless it's the only option. Every option is leagues better. You will find yourself learning the material on your own
