He may seem easy, but hes an unfair grader. he is very unclear on what he wants on his papers. This class has a lot of writing, and your finals grade seems unfair.

If you cheat, take his class. Only three people didn't cheat. Very boring and dulll. If you want to understand theory do not take Shaw. If you want an easy A, take him/

Horrible professor. Difficult to understand in all aspects including coursework. Self-authored textbook is boring and irrelevant, not to mention expensive. Ridiculous on all counts!

seriously the most lost and confused teacher ever. his lecture lasts 10 minutes and completly off subject. u wont understand a word he sais. tests have nothing to do w/ the lecture or the book. he confuses everyone by giving wrong info. TAKE SMONE ELSE

Terrible professor really. All quiz's everyone basically takes as a group. He has no control over his class. Its literally like stepping into a time warp and going back to high school. Material is largely uninteresting and presented in an uninteresting fashion. You read his book yet he's one of those teachers you don't receive a passionate lecture

took it over Summer. He's not clear at all. I got all A's and ended up with a B. Tests are very confusing & hard. You need to read the entire book and notes which you'll have hard time taking them because of his handwriting. Over all he's not a easy teacher take it with someone else.There is a presentation and a project plus a few tests.

While taking his class online, he gave us a 10 page paper to write by the end of the year. However, he did not send the rubric until a week and a half before the essay was due. On top of this, he began telling students to add headings and subheadings, 3 days before the essay was due. Do not take this class, complete was of time.

Horrible grading system. Hardly responds to emails. Poor communication. Seems to think extremely highly of himself. You MUST buy HIS own written books, you will have no other choice. Avoid at all costs.

Took this professor for an online class and he is very hard. He is not very clear with the 5 page paper that he had due at the end of the semester. His test questions are very confusing. The answers that are the book for his questions are not the same answers that he has as options. I would definitely not recommend taking him for soc 340.

The professor doesn't not communicate when needed. Also when you ask for help he does not help you and has you just figure it out on your own. I would not recommend having him as a professor.

Professor Shaw takes advantage of the fact that he works in a large university with little oversight. He posts some grades to Canvas but then refuses to respond to email requests for the ones missing. His lectures are boring. He shows up late. He doesn't care. He thinks he is more important than the students he teaches. An awful experience.

The whole course was decided by very few items and tests were extremely difficult. He does not respond to emails, but at the end of the semester he sent one out to us. It went along the lines of "Don't bother emailing me about grades. What you get is what you get. I won't be responding." Wow...

Prof. Shaw is hands down the worst professor I have taken. All the comments warning you to not take this class are 100% right. I did not listen and was stuck taking his class, I regret it, it was extremely difficult, google won't help, and you need to read the chapters. Lectures don't help at all and he doesn't do Powerpoints. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!

Avoid this class! He has no assignments, excluding an essay, and a news article posting on the assigned chapter. You only have reading upon reading, and if you aren't on top of reading you're not going to make it. Do NOT take this class if you're actually interested in Criminal Theory.

This professor has very few assignments so even a small mistake on one of them may have a big impact on your overall grade. If you miss one assignment you will automatically get a D in the class. I took this class online, but he has a requirement to turn in your final in person. If you do not turn in your paper in person you loose 25% of your grade

Basically leaves it up to the students to teach each other. Your grade is based on the 2 exams you take, in which he does not give a study guide on and you have to go based on what other students put about each chapter. You do have a 10 PAGED ESSAY DUE, & he does not grade AT ALL. Would not recommend AT ALL, TAKE ANOTHER SOC CLASS, SERIOUSLY!!!!!!

He doesn't care for his students. I took him for an online class and it was the worst he's grading is based on two exams, one assignment and. one analytic essay. There is no structure for this class. No study guides just expects students to read the whole book and learn on their own. Horrible!!!

Difficult teacher and grader, while only grading on four things which are just midterm and a ten page paper at the end. Asked him for help and he said he would help me and others but didn't and now many of us (seven) are going to have to retake the class in Fall.

Worst experience as a student. Grade is based on three exams, one assignment, and a 10-page analytical essay. Does not give direction at all; I asked for help after taking first exam and his response was "read the chapters, take notes, and use notes for next exam." Not helpful at all since there are no power points, no study guides or anything!

Avoid this teacher at all costs. I made the mistake of taking SOC 305 and CJS 340 and girl I barely made it through. There are 3 quizzes, midterm and final as well as TWO 10 page papers which was four for me. He met up with our class once throughout the entire semester and we basically taught ourselves. Gave work on spring break and other holidays.

Reached out to Professor to get clarification on two of my test grades. He never responded. Reached out again to ask for clarification on the final grade, took him a while to get back to me. When I explained that I think he made a mistake, he snapped at me and condescending.

Pretty sure this "professor" is just using this job as an excuse to sell his book for some extra income.

I'm usually the type of person to read these reviews and think "oh these people are probably just lazy and didn't want to do the actual work", and end up taking the class. Never in my life have I regretted something so much...when I'm telling you I should have read these reviews and BELIEVED THEM. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS SAVE YOURSELF!!!

He gives 3 VERY hard exams worth 27 points each 50 questions. Do the readings all on your own (Good luck trying to read that huge book btw). You have to do one presentation on a chapter you're assigned to. But not only that, you're assigned to do a paper on a book which has absolutely nothing to do with the class, and the book was written by him!

This Professor very much lacked care for this class. There is limited work that can be used to actually give you a chance for a decent grade as there are only three major exams, one presentation, and one 10-page paper. The three tests are the majority of your grade and are extremely difficult. He offers no help whatsoever.

(he also doesn't post your presentation or paper grade on canvas so you really won't know if you'll pass the class until the semester is over)

I do not recommend taking this class with this professor. Hi never reply to messages. If you have an emergency, it does not give you opportunities. There is no extra credit. The two projects do not qualify. Only what you get in the 3 exams counts.

The dude just wants you to buy his book, dont use it for the entire semester but at the end low and behold you need his book to write ur essay.

He doesn't communicate anything throughout the entire semester. If you miss any assignment, it's an automatic D even though it doesn't match his point system. He wants us to write a 5 page paper based off of his own book. This was the worst professor I've ever had and unfortunately, this was my second time being stuck with him. Do yourself a favor.

Been taking college course for about 4 years and this is by far the laziest professor I have ever taken. He basically tells you to read the textbook and the rest is up to you. If you do bad on one test you might as well drop out of the class. Do no take this professor unless you want to be stressed out all semester long.

I did not realize how bad somebody could mess up a fully online class until this semester. Victor Shaw is so disorganized please avoid taking him if you have the chance!

This professor does not teach. He tells you to read the book and teach yourself, such a punch in the gut as a student because instead of making video lectures of himself teaching. HE HAS THE STUDENTS MAKE VIDEO LECTURES PER CHAPTER OF THE BOOK! Slap in the face type of assignment because this mandatory "video presentation" is worth a SMALL 5 pts.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! I am a straight A student and got a C. His class will ruin your GPA. His tests are impossible. I read that book several times. There are only 4 assignments: 3 tests and 1 essay. He does not teach, does not communicate, does not help you. His grading does not reflect equitable grading principles.

Perhaps the worst professor I have ever taken in my 3+ years at CSUN. He does not lecture, he does not answer emails or texts, and his zoom meetings are hard to comprehend because of poor explanations and poor internet quality on his end. He does not grade anything other than the exams, yet the class has other assignments in addition to exams.

By far the worst professor I've every taken. He doesn't teach you anything. Tests are hard. He used textbooks that are written by him that are terribly written, by the way. He's clearly only here for a check. He needs to be reported to the school.

The teacher seems nice but can't understand a word he's saying due to his accent. This professor has been the worst I've encountered in 4 years of college. He provides no instruction or engagement with students. You will read weekly chapters and the chapter slides. Professor Shaw wrote 20 books but struggled to engage students. His Zoom lectures were hard to follow, making learning difficult. The class included quizzes, one presentation, and a 10-page essay from his book. His emails were brief: “Take care and study well.” When I asked about my grade, I didn't receive a response.

Never responds to emails, EVER? I am not sure if he is even there paying attention to whatever is being taught because he doesnt grade absolutely anything until the semester is already over.
