Vic is an awesome instructor. She is very helpful and knowledgable, but very down to earth. She appears to have a genuine interest in the students. I would definately take her if you can.
Probably the most competent and helpful TA for a chemistry lab you will ever have. She's smart, she knows what she's doing, she explains "why" you're doing these labs and she'll get you out of there before the slow kid can get his distillation pipe setup. Highly Recommended.
Ms. Dougherty is so cool and fun to be with in class. She makes Chemistry exciting and fascinating!! Always willing to help, truely passionate about her career and loves teaching. I will definately take her again :D
Victoria was an awesome TA. She was straight to the point, and always willing to answer questions and work with you on a lab. She explained the labs in detail before you had to do them, and actually stayed the entire time the lab was going on (unlike some other professors). She is an awesome teacher and definitely should be taken for o. chem labs!
Sat through 5 organic profs classes and she was the best one. TAKE HER! She really cares, very smart, very cool... what a prof should be these days. She calls her students by their names which shows she does pay attention to her students! Gives take home quizzes and homework that are 40% and not that hard. Tests come straight from lecture! best pro
Took OChem II one time, got a D. Took it with Victoria, Got an A. Very level headed, down to earth, fun, makes material seem less confusing. Tells you exactly what you need to know for the exam. Gives several homeworks and a couple take home quizzes, but they arent terribly hard.
Very unhelpful teacher. Tries hard but doesn't understand a lot of the concepts herself. Makes mistakes with almost all examples including numbers, words, answers etc., so it's hard to refer to the notes for any help. Her tests are much harder than her work. I would not recommend her to anyone especially for this class.
ugh, not a great teacher. she can be funny but with a class of about 300 people its hard to really learn anything. probably will fail. plus she makes so many mistakes on her examples and notes.. not good
Terrible!!!!! Her tests are like the homework, which is a plus. But if you have a question, be prepared for her to make you feel stupid for asking it! She has very bad mood swings, and gets angry easily. Be prepared to answer your own questions because you definitely wouldn't want to talk to her...
Horrible!!!! Her test have nothing to do with the HW she assigns! she makes mistakes often but the worst part is that what she goes over in class is not even on the test! AVOID!!!
Spent 2 hours in her office before the final. Had a "D" going into the final got a "C". It's a big class and hard to ask question during class. Go to her office and she'll spend as much time as you need. If you think this is gonna be easy, it is not. Take her if you want to put in effort. She will help, but you need to ask.
Fun, clear teachings, some homework nothing too difficult.
I don't know why people are complaining about her. So far she's a better professor than most out there at UTSA. It could be because our class is downtown and we dont have 300+ students so it's easier to comprehend what she's saying. Honestly everything she talks about in class was on the test, and the homework is simple and easy to do.
Very good teacher. She is helpful in learning, tests are easy, and she explains very well and very clear on what she wants from the students.
She loves her big eraser......other than that, she is a great teacher.
I took her class at the dt campus so class was smaller than at the mc. I think she was a very good teacher. She would explain things as many times as you needed her to. she never made me feel dumb. she was very funny and was cool to joke around with. her home work was easy and so were her tests.i liked her class and recommend her to anyone!!!
I think she is an awesome teacher! She isn't easy but as long as you pay attention to what she lectures on and read the book you will be good. She will help you as long as you ask, and she is very friendly and helpful. She give pop quizes so show up to class on time! Homework and Tests aren't too hard but they are not easy either, so study hard!!!!
Outstanding professor! She will write all reactions & concepts on the board as she lectures. Very tough but fair and always willing to help during office hours. Read material prior to class, attend all lectures (pop quizzes that help your grade), immediately ask questions if you are lost, put in the study hours and making an A is very doable.
Victoria Dougherty is a great organic chem teacher! She keeps it interesting and fun. She makes little mistakes on the board sometimes but she definitely knows her stuff. I thought the class was much easier than I was expecting. Her tests weren't bad at all.
Shes a good and funny teacher. She gives a lot of HW but you have plenty of time to do it all
Doughtery is slightly rude. Her class however is straight to the point, lectures explain how to do work on hmwk and tests. HMWK is out of textbook, can be pretty long, split it with someone. It does teach you material for tests, which are 20 questions, extemely easy, take her.
Take her. She is very funny and clearly explains everything. If you have a question about something, you can ask her to explain it again with no problems. The homework is kind of long, but you have lots of time to do it. Tests aren't bad either.
I love this teacher! She's got this rough and tough personality on the outside, but she's very nice and cares about her students! Not to mention that she's funny! I found class to be enjoyable and understandable. The homework is long, but it will save your butt on the exams. Take her!! :D
Dougherty is a good teacher!! she may mess up her math sometimes, but she's reasonable. her tests are 20 questions multiple choice but her hw is LONG....work hard and ull get an A...HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Take her! She's a great teacher and makes the class fun. She explains things really well and uses examples to clarify. The homework is long but if you actually do it you'll be good for the tests. She made chem interesting :)
Great teacher, knows her stuff. Is a bit fast paced, but clearly explains the information well. She provides MILLIONS of examples. Answers many questions in class. She always reviews before the tests and it really helps you focus what will be on her tests. I would definitely take her again.
She is a very goos teacher, explains things clearly, gives plenty of examples. The homework assignments are long but they only help you for the exams, shes pretty funny too.
Dougherty was a wonderful chemistry teacher!!! Loved having her. She knew exactly what she was talking about, and taught it very well. Her homework actually helped me understand the material. Make sure to extensively review the material for all exams. Wish I could take her for Gen Chem 1!
Awesome.4 tests,4 quiz,4 HW,&Final. She explains everything, even goes over tests.Curves tests, gives partial credit, gives answers to quiz, final replaces lowest test grade, she's very accessible in office hours, responds to emails promptly.HW helps prep for tests. She's very animated in front of class, keeps u engaged and has a a good sense of humor. A+
Dougherty is an awesome teacher. She goes easier in lab sections than she does in lecture. Explains things very well, and tells you what you need to know. She allows students to use lab reports on the final =100. Always full of funny stories.
She was a great O Chem teacher! I wouldn't have gotten an A without her. If you do the homework and understand it you will do great
SHE IS AWESOME!! she is so helpful, her lectures are clear and straight to the point, and you actually learn! plus she is pretty funny so class is 10x better! if you attend class she basically gives you the questions she will put on the tests. AND she intentionally makes the homework easy so everyone can make 100's. seriously people, TAKE HER!
Quirky teacher but makes class fun
Take her! this subject isn't an easy one but she explains everything extremely well. She makes really funny comments and is very down to earth. I wish i could take her for gen chem II :(
Awesome teacher. She teaches in a fun way that will get your attention and get the point across. 3 tests that are similar to the homework. 1 final that was pretty tough, but manageable. I'd recommend her
she is amazing. best basic chem teacher at UTSA . 3 tests 1 final. read textbook and study. chemistry is not easy but she shows you the easiest ways to get through it. TAKE HER!
EASY! Go to class, take notes, study notes, get an A. She is extremely straight forward.
Her lab is awesome. She makes it fun because the class is difficult. Lab reports are straight forward and graded fairly. You get to use them on the final so put effort into them. She also has hilarious chemistry jokes (if you're into that sort of thing)
she is a good prof. she tries to make class fun and easy. if you read the book and study notes youll do good. she stays after class for a lil to answer qs. very down to earth prof.
I would recommend this professor to anyone. She is the best Basic Chem teacher at UTSA. Especially if non-chem major. She tells you questions on the test! All test questions come from the notes and are multiple choice (25 questions). She will explain anything if you ask!!!1
Very easy A if you go to class and take good notes. Her tests are derived from her notes and are very similar to the homework she has on blackboard. Take her and ask questions if you don't understand!
Prof. Dougherty is awesome, must take her, she is the prof who can give you a solid foundation for the rest of your chem courses. take notes, try to not miss class you'll be glad you didn't, her exams come from her notes and examples nothing out of the blue. easy A but at the same time increases you knowledge about chemistry its not a freebie class
This teacher is very down to earth. She is intelligent and easy to understand. Tests are exactly what she says they are going to be. She writes on the chalkboard, which is kind of outdated and i feel bad she has to breathe in that chalk dust but she writes big enough for everyone to see and she writes great notes Gives you alot of time for homework
If you had a good foundation in chemistry in high school, this class will likely be a breeze; if not, this is where you can get one. She makes mistakes when giving examples sometimes, though, which can throw someone off if the material is new. Overall, I highly recommend her. She may seem intense in class, but she is very nice when you talk to her!
Really good class, hard for many people, but she makes it much more bearable. She funny and straight to the point on topics. I even ended up screwing up big time and showed up late to the final and she still let me take it. She's awesome, take this class with her!
GREAT GREAT professor!! Definitely recommend taking her. Took her for basic chem. You'll really learn and enjoy the class. She is very helpful, goes out of her way to try to make things as clear and easy as possible for her students. Studying will be needed, keep up with your hw. and read over your notes and you should be fine.
Not one to comment about professors, but this is by far the best professor I've had at UTSA. If you don't plan on studying A LOT for her class don't even bother taking it. Makes it understandable and entertaining. Not easy but it is definitely possible to get an A. She is very interested in her students and will work with you. Have to put in work!
I took OChem with Dougherty in the summer after failing in the spring. She was by far easier to understand, more engaging as a professor, and always there to help. Her homework is basically a review for the exam itself. Attendance is mandatory (pop quizzes). Thanks to her I got an A! Take her! :D
Lied about what was on the final exam for the organic 2 lab. Basically said no mechanisms would be on the final and then asked for us to design our own reaction mechanism. She's full of ess ache eye tea. Acts real down to earth but grades based on favoritism. Favors females to males. Don't take.
She is nuts, in a great way. She is loud, crystal clear, dry humored, and super specific on what will be on the tests, homework and the class in general. It's wonderful, like a breath of fresh air compared to professors where you feel like your watching a black and white movie. Great professor, you'll learn a lot.
She is extremely helpful and BY FAR the best Chemsitry teacher at UTSA. This is the second time taking Chemsitry because I originally had a horrible professor. But she is great, take notes, study them, scan book. And you should be just fine.
My favorite teacher this semester...I actually looked forward to coming to class. She presents the material using examples that people can relate too--doesnt go too fast or to slow--if you study, you will be successful and learn tons! I am so sad I cannot take her for gen chem due to work schedule--if you get a chance to take her class--do it!!!
I thought I learned a lot in her class and expected to get a B in the class. The final was difficult so I did not end up with the grade I wanted. She is a great teacher though. She teaches chemistry in everyday language so that the students can understand it. She goes over the homework and tells you the type of questions to expect for the tests.
Took her at NWV. Very cool, explains things very well. Really wants students to grasp what is being taught. Test was just like the HW with numbers changed. I'd take her for every Chem class possible. Does curve if class average is low, and if you have an A, you don't need to take final.
She explains things very clearly and keeps you interested. She pretty much tells you exactly what will be on the test and will go over examples extensively. She's my favorite teacher so far.
If you can't pass general chemistry with Dougherty, you should just consider changing your major. GO TO CLASS, is just the best advice I'd give to anyone.
Dougherty is amazing! Just go to class and take notes, do your homework and read the textbook and you're covered. The best part is that she's always willing to lend a hand and is extremely understanding and humble. TAKE HER!
Best chemistry professor at UTSA. She gives her students AMPLE opportunities to succeed (e.g. pop quizzes that add extra points to your final average), and she makes class fun. I hated chemistry before this class, but I left enjoying it. Extremely helpful. GO TO CLASS, take notes, do the hw/quizzes, and visit her office.
Very Good professor. Very wiling to help and even met with students before test. She made class interesting and easy to understand. Definitely need to go to class and study.
Literally the greatest prof I've had to date. Definitely inspires curiosity for chemistry and makes learning less tedious and more lively. Pay attention. take notes and visit her office hours if you're confused. Use the textbook as a supplement - it can help clear up difficult concepts and is great for practice before a test! Take her if you can!
She is awesome! Everything on the test comes directly from her lecture notes... HOWEVER you have to work for a good grade. She helps you with whatever you need and is extremely knowledgable. SI for this class also definitely helps, Romina is the best!
she is a good professor but has a very strong attitude. she likes to feel like she is better than you and makes rude remarks if you ask a question. but she is still an ok teacher i would recommend her.
Good teacher, really explains the material in a way that everyone can understand. go to class and visit her office hours to get a decent grade in the class. dont expect an A unless you go all out in the course
She is not as easy as everyone says. I thought I was good at chemistry until I took this class. However, she is extremely helpful one on one so go to her office hours. She has very dry humor and she cusses a lot.
Professor Dougherty is a great professor. Her classes are tough. You have to study, but her lectures are easy to follow. You have to work for an A. She loves mechanisms, so you need to understand them. If you have any questions, she will be happy to help you during her office hours.
She is a GREAT professor. She is really funny and clear and helpful but her class is difficult. Her tests are only 20 questions so if you miss 7 you fail the test (and there are only three). She replaces your lowest test grade with the final!
Very enthusiastic teacher, always keeping it interesting with jokes. You won't fall asleep in her class. Exams are from her lecture notes and she gives a exam review every time. Will recommend to anyone.
The greatest chemistry professor I've ever bad. Attend every lecture and you'll do fine. Her tests are based off her lectures and she will literally tell you "this is on the test." Also she is hilarious, enjoyed every second of that class.
TAKE HER! She is an AMAZING teacher! She doesn't really use the textbook all too much. She doesn't go chronologically with the book and rather prepares you for Gen Chem 1. Don't skip class, take good notes, go to the SI sessions, and STUDY extremely hard for an A in the class. Plus she literally reads you the questions on the exam the class prior.
Professor Dougherty is awesome! I really don't have an interest in chemistry, but I have to take it for my major, and this prof really made the class bearable. I had her for basic chem, and she realizes that the class is boring and she tries to spice it up. Not alot of text book use, just take really good notes.
SHE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAAAAZING!!! You will not regret her AT ALL. Basic chem @ UTSA is a weed out class, so do be aware that this course is really difficult. However Dougherty is the best chem professor here. She hates slackers, but loves those who work and try. Plus she explains concepts in the best way of any prof I've ever had. TAKE HER. SHE ROCKS
Took her for my Level I Science Core, and loved it! You will work your butt off, but you will learn so much. It just takes practice. 3 MC exams, 1 MC cumulative final, and simple online homework. She explains everything clearly; if you attend class, you don't really need the book. She's funny and sarcastic; there's never a dull moment in her class.
This class was very challenging but doable. Before every test she usually reviews by giving you similar questions. Her classes are very helpful and are almost necessary in order to pass. Take her!
My favorite professor at UTSA, knows her stuff and is clear and concise in her instruction. You have to work for your A, but she will prepare you well for your future Chem courses. Her tests are straightforward and from the notes. The material ISN'T difficult, there is no reason not to do well in her class.
she is a tough lady but hilarious and knows her stuff. she hates people who go to her class to talk or use their cell phones. she isnt scared to call you out in front of eveyone. i worked hard for my grade. going to class and taking good notes is a must to get anything higher than a C. she is super helpful too. take her!!
Terrible, terrible office hours. I made an appointment with her to go over some things I really needed help with and she directed me to the internet. She will take any opportunity to ridicule students who ask any kind of question and is completely unapproachable. Avoid!!!!
She explains all the material really well provides practice exams and regularly gives quizzes. Exams are usually given at the end of each chapter and ample time is given to study for them. Homework should be done in chunks you won''t finish if you start the night before. She also gives exam reviews. Hard work is required and expected though.
Best lab I''ve ever had. Granted I took it in summer and she was instructing in the lab instead of a TA. Super sarcastic one of my favorite things about her and does not take kindly to slacking. You can manage an A but you have to work for it.
Professor Dougherty is sarcastic and straight forward, it's one of my favorite things about her! She is straight forward and wont sit there and babysit you so you can't slack. I definitely would recommend her!
She is an alright professor. My major is engineering, so I am not that interested in chemistry. If you apply yourself and stay on top of your reading, you can ace the class. It you struggle with science, don't take this professor.
She is really good teacher. I recommend taking her class. Although she makes chemistry easy to understand, it is still not an easy A class. You have to make sure to show up to every class and be REALLY attentive. She is also funny and blunt. She can make you laugh and feel frightened at the same time.
Most of the time she's pretty upbeat and even a little funny, but she has her moments where she can be really rude and exhibits very poor leadership skills.
She's a great professor and really knows her stuff. You definitely need to show up and she will call you out if you're on your phone or anything. Tests were relatively easy if you study, she tells you exactly whats gonna be on the exam. She's also hilarious and makes the lecture not so boring. would definitely recommend
Amazing choice for an O chem professor. Had 4 test and final. Each test was free response and she gives partial points. Organic is tough but as long as you attend SI all the time, you will do fine. She is very specific about what she wants you to know for each test. Its one of those classes that you have to practice over and over to understand.
Best Chemistry teacher in UTSA
Professor Dougherty is hilarious but she's not afraid to call you out in class if you're acting up. She always lets you know throughout her lectures and before the exams exactly what to expect. Even basic chemistry can be tricky at times so if you want a professor that's going to prepare you for the upper level courses, it's good to start with her
I liked this professor alot. I don't know how I ended up with a B in her class I failed every single test with a 55. I managed getting a B she's awesome. Funny and great teacher I just wouldn't pay attention. I recommend her!
She is the greatest Chem professor. Knows her stuff and very easy class to pass. All you have to do is just read the book and you will do fine.
Coming from Arman's Basic Chemistry, Dougherty's class is a dream. She gives sample exams that are almost exactly like the actual exams and she explains everything so well. She's so hilarious and sweet one-on-one. She tries to make Chemistry interesting. Don't be on your phone in class though, she'll call you out. If you get the chance, take her.
Go to class. Take notes. Do homework. Iclicker questions at random. Study. You will pass. She's hilarious. She will go as far as she can to make you understand. She reads over the exams before the actual exam day so you know exactly what to study for! Don't mess around, she will call you out for it. I love her! Will take again for sure!
Amazing professor! She's very sassy and blunt and DOES NOT ALLOW ELECTRONICS WHATSOEVER. But overall, GREAT professor who knows how to teach and what she's doing. She is HILARIOUS!
I was not very impressed by her use of profanity to try and drive a lesson home.
Dougherty is an excellent professor. She'll make you laugh and keep you interested, and does a great job explaining. She is really cool but in reality she is a no BS teacher. Tests can be tough but she does read out what to expect before every exam number for number. Overall, she does her best to make sure all students understand the material.
I had a chemistry phobia until I took her. PRO: Class goes by fast, in class examples similar to test, posts past tests to review, easy online hmwk (10 chances), interestingfunny prof CON: Iclicker pop quizzes anytime during class so come to class and don't leave! Calls out students harshly for phone use, has errors in notesspelling problems
She's good
Dougherty is amazing! Her tests are hard, but the curve in the class allows a 74 to be a B. Her lectures are hilarious and she's super clear about she wants. She tells you EXACTLY what is on her exams, question by question. For example, question one: nomenclature, question two: electron congfig, etc, etc. Pay attention, notes, homework; you're good
I love professor Dougherty and I like to give her starbucks!!! She helps me do well in her class and prepares me for general chemistry II and I LOVE DOUGHERTY.
Love Dougherty. She's funny while making sure you understand everything. There is iclicker quizes during class, so make sure you attend. Dougherty is very clear and helpful.
Professor Dougherty is one of the best at UTSA! There are few teachers out there that are actually good at teaching and she is one of them. Show up to class!(on time!!)(pop iclicker quizzes) & take good notes! literally write every single thing she says, it will help come test time. she does not post her notes on blackboard!
Professor Dougherty is the best professor I have had this semester! Her lectures are easy to understand and she makes class and learning fun. She makes her class easy as possible so be sure to learn the material, and you will get an A for sure! She is a very kind and fun professor. Be sure not to use your phonelaptop! :)
Make sure you attend! Not only for the iClicker quizzes, but because she makes lectures funny and interesting (real-world examples and analogies) and she gives you the test questions beforehand. Studying & practicing are essential to passing. However, she can be rude at times, and I hated her no-laptop-use policy! But overall, an excellent teacher.
AMAZING PROF! Knows her stuff, can make relations to aid in grasping concepts, and keeps class interesting. Show up pay attention take notes do the HW and you'll be a success. She gives you everything you need to pass the class the rest is on you. Some think she is tough and intimidating, IMO def not, just a realist no bs prof. Taking her for GEN1
Absolutely inspirational professor! Dougherty has a passion for chemistry and knows how to relate it with the real world. Lectures are interesting and hilarious. Exams are straightforward, but are a big chunk of your grade. Homework and clicker quizzes are simple as long as you are prepared. Don't skip class.
She likes to give i-clicker quizzes throughout lecture for attendance so go to class. Also, explains everything really well with plenty of examples, one of the best professors I've taken. She has online assignments related to material that is on the test, so do them and pass the test. She's really funny and is really great I recommend her.
This is, by no means, a tough class but you definitely need to keep up with the material. Memorizinglast-minute cramming is not going to cut it. Focus during lecture and take notes. Read the textbook, but treat it more as a supplement because all of her exams are lecture-based. Put in the effort and an A is almost guaranteed.
O Chem 1 is a tough class. I'm so thankful I had Dougherty. I actually took it over the summer (10 weeks) and was almost overwhelmed with the amount of material. You have to read the book before class. She makes you want to be a better student, even though she is kind of scary, but in a good way! Definitely going to ask for a letter of rec.
She is amazing! She doesn't believe in powerpoints, goes old-school and uses the chalkboard which helps for those hard problems, so you can see step by step. She makes you like chemistry and is hilarious. Attendance is mandatory, she will call you out if you're on your phone in class. Her tests weren't that hard, I made a B but could've made an A:)
She is a great professor for chemistry. She makes you like chemistry and the class isn't hard at all the tests are super easy. But you need to attend class, its a part of your grade.
Dougherty makes chemistry interesting and the main thing you need to do in order to pass this class is to go to class. Her tests are from the review she posts, so just sure to study and prepare well for the exam.
She's fantastic! Very direct teaching style - won't baby you, but will give you everything you need to pass (just do the work). Helpful in class and out, you'll know exactly what you need to study for exams. Lectures are enjoyable. She's very funny, but will wreck you if you have your phone out in class (to the tune of 10 pts off your next exam).
Hands down the best professor at UTSA. Plan on using your phone in class? If she catches you she will embarrass you in front of the class and deduct 10 points from your next exam. I had her at 6 PM, and she still made me laugh like crazy. Her tests are very doable if you practice her previous exams and take notes during class. Coffee & cats.
Professor Dougherty's Gen Chem 1 class is fair. She is really fair when it comes to grading. Yes, you will hear around campus "take her she is easy" but honestly she is a lot harder than other chem professor's on some aspects. But the main thing is about learning chemistry. If you tank an exam, the final ACS will replace it... Dont give up
Professor Dougherty is the best professor I've had so far. She is really funny and knowledgable about chemistry. Her personality makes her lectures interesting and worth going to. She posts practice tests online and is very helpful during her office hours. She is blunt and this scares some people but makes others laugh.
Professor Dougherty is amazing!!! She is funny, sweet, and super helpful! Her lectures are amazing. She teaches everything you need to know for her tests to get a great grade! I totally recommend taking her!
Don't use any electronics to class she singles people out and yells intensely if electronics are used. Don't cheat she expelled a couple of students for doing so. She is hilarious and makes chemistry basic and relatable. Don't need the book, but do need to buy connect program to do homework. Does pop quizzes. Posts past exams. Study hard.
TAKE HER!
Organic chemistry is the hardest class most people will ever take. I've never been so challenged and stressed, but she definitely helps in office hours. You have to study 10-15 hours a week, go to her office hours, tutoring. It's not a cake walk. She's great though.
This woman is truly the GOAT. I can't even explain, any class with her will be the most exciting struggle you have ever been through. Work hard you make an A. ACS final can make or break you so study. No attendance but don't skip class because not only will you fail, you will miss the iClicker quizzes and NO THERE ARE NO NOTES ONLINE. So be smart!
She really is the real MVP of Gen Chem 1! She actually teaches you chemistry unlike the other professors who just make you read the textbook and work 20x harder for the grade. Dougherty's tests were still pretty tough, but if you studied hard and practiced a lot, an A was very attainable. The ACS was very tough, but she works with you all semester!
This class is hard but Dougherty doesn't make it impossible for you to do well. She loves her job and teaches with passion. I enjoyed her style of teaching and it helped for a better understanding of chemistry. Im glad I took her over anyone else. There was 4 tests, the standardized ACS final and HW online. Takes attendance using iclicker
Sarcastic and hilarious, but very tough and blunt teacher. If you don't put in work, you'll fail. O Chem is one of the hardest classes to take, but she made it pretty understandable. She does not curve. She gives quizzes every week, which can help your grade if you bomb a test. I would recommend her. You can tell she really loves what she does.
Hard subject but Dougherty goes out of her way. No electronics. Review sessions outside of class and old test posted are a big help. Most test are out of 120 points and she replaces your lowest exam grade with the final. She's very helpful in office hours but don't show up not knowing anything. You can get an A but you have to work for it.
She is an amazing teacher who really knows what she's talking about, but the class is hard!!! This class was way harder than my current gen chem 2 class!! I would take her if the other teachers don't let you pass easily. If you can make an easy A in another gen chem 1 class take someone else, if not then just take her. But it won't be easy!!
Professor Dougherty is a great organic chemistry professor! You can't go wrong with taking her. She is blunt, sarcastic and funny, and she knows what she's teaching. You really have to put the time and effort into this class. There are random quizzes throughout the semester and she replaces the lowest exam grade with the final if it's better.
Prof. Dougherty is by far my favorite professor at UTSA! My first attempt at ochem was a bust so I took it with her the following semester and was able to understand it better. She knows exactly what she teaches and even dumbs it down for you when needed. Easily accessible outside of class and gives it to you straight.
Dougherty is a decent professor. She can be very discouraging at times due to the amount of students that choose not to try in the class. Do the homework study hard for the tests and you should have an easy B. I would not recommend taking her if you have other hard classes to go with it.
She was great fun personality but very strict breezed through a bit but overall very helpful
I love Professor Dougherty's class. Yes, she can be hard at times but she makes sure that everyone in her class knows what she's talking about. Her passion for chemistry is seen in her lectures and has inspired many students such as myself to love chemistry. Overall, she tries to help her students the best she can and she is amazing for that.
Dougherty doesn't screw around, thats why I love her. She's a straight forward person and will tell you to your face that you suck! It is all tough love though, because she genuinely cares and wants students to do well in her class. She once told me I sucked, and it pissed me off so much that I aced her ORGO 1 and 2. I highly recommend her class:')
She's alright. If you can take Aguliar though, he's more understanding when you don't understand something versus she's like "wow you don't know this already" when you try and get help. READ READ READ EVERYDAY. Honestly just skimming through the textbook before class will help.
Organic chemistry is a very hard subject so don't go in thinking it will be an easy A. In this class you have to approach problems in ways you have not learned from any other class. Prof Dougherty does a really good job of portraying what you need to know without any BS, but beware you have to be okay with some tough love.
Dougherty is a wonderful professor. She provides thorough (and often humorous) explanations of the concepts in lecture, and clearly states what is required of you in order to do well in her class. Read the chapters, do as many practice problems as possible (application is crucial to understanding ochem), GO TO CLASS, and an A is very attainable.
We were suppose to take quizzes throughout the semester but somehow ended up taking all of them but one, during the last month. No homework to boost your grade. Only open ended exams and quizzes. Most of her lectures consisted of example problems on the board without much further explaining and making people feel dumb for asking questions after.
Great professor, one the hardest classes I have ever taken. You MUST read the book, do all practice problems and you can pass. Dougherty was very helpful in her office, her tests are fair and doable if you put in a lot of work. Youll be dedicating a good portion of your life to this class. Dougherty tells you all test topics shes great!
DUH! YOU HAVE TO TAKE HER CLASS! she amazing, took her for O chem I, she was fabulous. She gives some tough love all the time but you'll get over it. Her test are fair and can make over 100 if you study good enough. Extremely helpful at her office hours. Must read the book consistently and do ALL in chapter and end of chapter problems to make A
I took Dougherty for Organic 1 Lab and liked her so much as a TA that I ended up signing up for her class lecture for Organic 2. She explains you things in a way that you understand it perfectly unlike many other professors and takes the time to make sure you know it. She can be mean sometimes when you act rude or disrespectful.
Tough Class. Read the textbook do all of the homework problems. Attend all TA sessions if possible. This class is tough but not impossible go to office hours as soon as you realize you don't understand something. She comes off very intimidating but if you ask her something she will help. She is available at office hours and over email.
Professor Dougherty is extremely intelligent, but she prefers the tough love approach. If you dont learn from that teaching style (telling you youre going to fail, making you feel dumb, etc) dont take her. No hw to boost your grade. Currently taking and spend about 15+ hours a week studying. Shes very rude and intimidating.
Difficult subject excellent/funny professor! Would take her again. Go to class and be prepared to read book. I did poorly in the first 2 exams and worked my butt off for the other 2 in order to pass the class. An A and B are reachable if you put in work from the beginning. Do all problems at the end of chapters. Always available for questions.
Dougherty is probably the hardest professor to take OChem1 with. The lectures are very fast paced, and her method of teaching is comprised of asking you questions because you should have already taught yourself. She constantly degrades the classes ability to do good. Only grades are exams and iclicker. Over 50% of the class will fail.
I love Dougherty, she's a tough love kind of person. She lectures fast because she only has 50 MINUTES to teach a few sections from each chap. Clicker questions are for attendance. Gives partial credit in exams. No extra credit. Never attended office hours; heard she was very helpful. Def take her! CON: does seem to get mad when u don't know sumthn
Arguably one of the top two OCHEM professors, and she's not two. As a disclaimer I had Dourghety for only an hour so I'm only speaking to those exams. She's very rough around the edges and not afraid to call you out however, she really wants you to succeed and if you put in the work you will do very well in the class. Do the problems outside.
One of the best professors at UTSA! An A is attainable as long as you put the work in from the beginning. READ THE BOOK AND PRACTICE EVERY BOOK QUESTION. OChem isn't easy but she does everything she can to help her students. Gives review sessions, tests are over 100 points and she's honest about what it takes to be a good student so take her advice
One of the best chemistry professors out there. She wants to see you succeed so she will roast you if you're not paying attention in class. The way she teaches may a tiny smidge off but, it was the best way ochem has been broken down for me. You have to do the work outside though but if you do you will see results. FYI I took the MWF.
Amazing professor who knows what she's talking about! Her exam questions come straight from her notes. Make sure to read the textbook and do all the practice problems. Drops the lowest exam grade and replaces it with your final exam grade if higher. Can sometimes come off rude, but is needed to succeed this class.
I took Dougherty for ochem 1 and 2 and received an A+ in both. She is the best professor I have ever taken. She doesnt screw around and teaches you exactly what you need to know. Read every chapter, do all the practice problems and go to ALL of the STARS & TA sessions and you too should make an A+! Dont take anyone else!!
An A is attainable, however, it is HARD work. I took in the summer and this was by far the most challenging course. She assumes her class is the only class you are taking and you can spend 24/7 on it. Some questions on the exam are TRICKY and not similar to the book or TA/STAR/lectures. TOOK UP MY WHOLE SUMMER. Only plus is that she likes cats.
I took Dougherty for ochem 1 and 2 and she made me absolutely LOVE the course! I came into the class really nervous because I had always heard from my friends that ochem is a super difficult course. Don't get me wrong, it is a tough class, but getting an A is attainable! She said that reading the book was imp, but I never read. GO TO TA SESSIONS!!!
She poses as a student on Group Me and belittles students during lectures and on group me messages. She is super paranoid bout cheating! uses proctorio and takes alot of measures to prevent cheating. I had to read the chapters because she fails to teach! Dont trust good reviews. They were made BY HER!
Your grade depends on the exams and she barely prepares you for the exams. Even teaching yourself is difficult because she purposely makes the test hard and tricky, so you feel like you know it when in reality you don't. She has a high failure rate as well and takes it as an achievement for some reason? STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR PLEASE!
Grade really depends on the midterm & final, written by her & super tough. Lab reports were easy for me bc you just watch the lecture & lab video then write the report on it. Tests were difficult because you dont actually get to do labs or see rxns in person, making it hard to learn. Take notes on the lec vids which is what will be tested over
Professor Dougherty is mediocre at best.... there were several instances during the semester that she contradicted herself and taught against the book. If you can, take someone else... seriously anybody else. This class was unnecessarily difficult and stressful because of the performance of the professor.
Professor seems very knowledgeable in ochem, but her lectures did not prepare you for the exams. The textbook was more helpful. Exams were very confusing and tricky. This is the first C I have received since being in uni. Ochem is hard, but I underestimated how difficult her class would be. She's extremely tough and can be very discouraging.
Professor seems very knowledgeable about the subject however she is incredibly mean and can be down right cruel at times. She is so concerned by cheating that she is willing/threatens to do things that are ultimately a disservice to the students. The 2 exams will decide your grade and they are very difficult especially without in person lab.
Professor Dougherty is very knowledgeable on ochem and gets excited explaining certain chapters, but she's very tough on her student. Not the most understanding person in this pandemic. There is such thing as dumb questions in this class and being ahead in the book is highly important. Test are proctored. Practice problems and textbook is the key.
If youre taking this class, get ready to pay. You have to buy the textbook which is fine. You CANNOT try to get by without it. The homework is linked in the book which I believe is unfair. Just an FYI.
Professor Dougherty can come across as cruel, but she does not mean to. She just tries to be honest and straightforward. I would say she is a pretty good lecturer. But for O Chem II, reading the book is a must. Tests are hard, but manageable if you study and attend SI sessions.
One of my favorite professors! Her class is difficult, but if you put in the work (take good notes, go to lectures) it is very obtainable to get an A. Her lectures are just as entertaining as they are educational. From what I have picked up, her main goal is to make sure you know the basics of chem and are prepared for upper-level courses.
I barely passed OCHEM1 & was pretty anxious going into OCHEM2. But Prof. Dougherty is great at her job, she's never tested us on something we haven't gone over. If you go to her office hours & attend lectures regularly you'll know what to focus on for exams. Do ALL the HW, take good notes, do BoB problems, etc. 90% of passing depends on your effort
Professor Dougherty was AMAZING. I was scared to take this class, but she was great at teaching. In order to pass this class it requires lots of effort and practice. Pay attention to her lectures and PRACTICE A LOT. She wants you to be prepared for upper division classes. I am glad I was her student, one of my favorite professors.
Best chem professor I have taken by far!! She may be hard, but she makes the lectures so much easier to understand. She truly cares about her students passing, and will do anything she can to help everyone pass her class. She's very up front and honest, but you won't learn this subject any better by anyone else. also, she's a huge animal lover!
I loved her class!! Her class takes studying and showing up to her lectures. She doesn't add extra information that isn't needed. She does require to buy the textbook code but the textbook homework and the examples in class is almost identical to the test. You are only allowed to take notes on an Ipad/notebook. Pay attention and you will pass!
Overall this professor is very knowledgeable in her field. You can tell she wants everyone to learn as long as you're willing to learn. Don't take her class if your sensitive because you might get yelled at for the most minor things. You can get an A as long as you study and read and keep up with the material.
Professor Dougherty is a very knowledgeable person, she is funny and you wont fall asleep in her class, the test are challenging, do the practice problems in the book and you can get good grades on her exams. shes very caring and wants us to pass the class as well as gain as much knowledge in chemistry that prepare us for MCAT and any other exam
For O-Chem 2 she did a fantastic job teaching. The book supplements her lecture incredibly as she does a great job to use it as a guide for the course. Some say she can come off as rude, and though there was a few moments where I might agree, I could tell she would do her best to try and be more understanding. Overall one of the greatest professors
LISTEN! If you want an A, go to lectures, read the textbook, go to sessions, and REPEAT. The only way I got an A is by repetition until it became second nature. Focus on what topics she lectures on and read the textbook for further understanding and for the love of God, do the problems in the textbook. She's not mean just real, suck it up and try.
I will say that she is one of the worst professors I have ever taken at UTSA. Shes extremely rude, not very understanding, and to top it off, she could probably care less how you do in the class. She makes students feel dumb for asking questions. Good luck on taking tests because her notes are all over the place. Very unprofessional teacher.
Amazing feedback during office hours and will give you one-on-one help. There's extra credit built into every test and the final exam. All the practice tests are right on par with the real tests.
Honestly Professor Dougherty was one of the best at UTSA. She does care for her students but you need to work for it. Her lectures are above and beyond and she goes out of her way to make it as interesting as possible. She also adds in a bunch of jokes and memes. Her office hours are very useful and she WILL HELP YOU. Definitely taking her again.
Prof Dougherty is an amazing teacher if you actually want to learn, which you will need to if you plan to major in any science. She does require you to work for your grade but it 's not impossible in any way. Her lectures are great and will answer any questions you have. Gives extra credit on tests. I would really recommend her for any chemistry.
Very Good Class, It is a bit tough not gonna lie, But she is a very good professor. You literally work for the grade you want, she is real with you from the beginning. There's a lot off extra help from TA's and her office hours are super helpful. It can get intense sometimes but she understands.
Really good prof. You can tell she actually cares that people are learning the material, and she makes good analogies to help you understand concepts. She has office hours and is active in the GroupMe when anyone needs help. Super engaging lectures too.
She was super direct and easy to understand
Prof. Dougherty is one of the best OChem prof's at UTSA. She genuinely enjoys the subject and teaches it in a way that is easy to understand. That does not mean the class is easy though. You must go to class, do practice problems in the book, and embrace NMR/nomenclature/acid-base chemistry. Do those, and you'll get an A. Go to office hours too.
Genuinely one of my favorite chem professors I've had so far. Super amazing and in depth lectures, makes sure you know what you're learning and reinforces concepts. Provides extra credit on every test so you can make up to 20 points back that you may have missed. She's a powerhouse at ochem and will make it a lot easier than you may think it is!
Hands down the best professor I have ever taken. She is tough, and exams can be hard if you do not study to prepare yourself. But you will not learn the material from anyone better. She genuinely cares about her students passing the course.
Professor Dougherty is one of my favorites! She is hilarious and cares about her students learning. Ochem can be hard but if you have a good understanding of ochem 1 and did ok in that class, you'll be fine in this one. I recommend studying lecture notes more than books, and the sample exams give a good preview of what each test will be like.
Organic Chemistry is a tough subject and takes a lot of studying! Professor Dougherty is one of the best organic chemistry prof at UTSA, she is very fair with grading. Be prepared to study a lot and read the textbook! Also her lessons are funny and super helpful.
Amazing professor. Her lectures were very engaging; she made learning organic chemistry fun and understandable. Highly recommend.
Dougherty is a great prof and doesn't mess around. Anything you get in class is exactly what you deserve as she gives you so many resources. Exams are 80% but she drops one and her practice exams are life-savers. Don't expect ochem to be easy but Dougherty doesn't make it harder than it should be. Don't take her if you're sensitive btw.
Dougherty is one of the best lecturers I have ever had. She can be extremely profane, but it actually reinforces the content. Exams are difficult, but doable. Once you figure out how she wants her lab reports, and you follow the format she gives you, it gets so much easier.
Dougherty is a good professor overall though she makes a few too many jabs on students who don't understand a topic in the class she has said on countless occasions ' If you can't understand this, art major.' Now this joke was funny in the beginning ngl. It got old and sympathetically hurtful for those who couldn't seem to grasp the concept.
Exam reviews very similar to actual exams & TA sessions after class are a MUST to review what was talked about in class. Exams (80%) out of 120 (5 total/1 dropped) iClicker (20%). May be crazy, but she wants you to learn & is passionate about chem. No phones/laptops allowed during lecture, only iPads. Sometimes uses questions from book on exams.
One of the best and most highly respected professors at UTSA! Attend ALL of the TA's sessions, go to the professor's Dougherty office hours, watch her videos, and practice problems from the book. She is a highly knowledgeable and passionate educator, don't skip her lectures! She cares about your success and provides many resources to succeed.
Professor Dougherty is genuinely one of the most caring professors you will encounter, but she puts up a tough front. Don't miss her lectures, make sure to do the practice problems and practice exams, and try to go to the TA sessions. She very much wants all of her students to pass the class and very willing to meet outside of class.
DONT TAKE HER!! her notes are all over the place and her tests are heavyyyy and look nothing like her exam reviews. she makes fun of students too and makes sensitive comments
If you can't take things bluntly don't take her. She will tell you what is on her mind and won't fluff anything. Otherwise, she is an outstanding professor, and incredibly smart. Pay attention in class, watch her videos, and DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS especially with the TA worksheets.
mean. :(
Professor Dougherty is a great lecturer. If you read ahead and watch lecture videos, getting an A in OChem won't be a problem. Her exams are fair. She won't test on anything she hasn't discussed, and her practice exams are VERY helpful. The only people who won't succeed in this class are lazy students who think studying is above them.
She lectures well so when you get to lab, you know exactly what you're expected to do. She's a fair grader and her exams are also very fair. Be sure to do your prelabs before you get to lab, even when she stops checking them. She seems intimidating but don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions about the class or need any academic advice.
I've had her two semesters(once even being ochem2 over summer) and will end w/ an A+ in both. She is one of the best chem profs at UTSA and her lectures are funny and interesting. Want an A do this: read the textbook AND DO THE IN-CHAPTER PROBLEMS, do TA ws(all), watch video lectures when confused on a topic(2x speed), and take her mock exams. GL!
Ochem is hard, and Professor Dougherty will tell you that, but she also tells you that it's not impossible if you do what is expected of you. Don't recommend taking the course over the summer since it is very fast paced but I enjoyed her lectures and her class set-up. Do the practice problems and sample exams, read the textbook, and you'll be good.
She's not everyone's cup of tea, but just suck it up, take her, and ignore rude comments. She's wonderful at explaining in a clear way, provides old lecture videos for reference, and she's honestly a really lenient grader. You HAVE to study, but that's just the nature of the classes she teaches.
I really enjoyed having her as a professor! She would give tough love to her students because she wanted us to strive to do our best in her class.
I took Professor Dougherty for ochem 1 and 2. Hands down the goat for organic chem. She offers help in the form of videos, TA notes, office hours, and TA sessions. You get the grade you work for. I will caution though, if you're sensitive to criticism or some tough love; take someone else. But if you're fine with all that she's the best prof easily
Organic chemistry is tough, but Professor Dougherty made it digestible. As long as you show up and put in the work, you will excel. She has numerous resources (past lectures, sample exams, and worksheets). Her exams are extremely lenient (graded out of 120). Visit her OH - she's extremely knowledgeable and willing to help if you ask for it.
Amazing! Dougherty demonstrates that she truly cares for student success by the time she takes to 1) make herself available, 2) make you feel apart of her course by being personal, 3) give you a lot of *good* materials, 4) stop to make sure class understands concept before continuing, 5) interactive iClicker questions, 6) makes expectations clear
She's genuinely angry.
One of the best professors I've ever had, and will only be mean to you if you can't keep your mouth shut about things she's supposed to be teaching. I started from the absolute bottom of knowing anything about chemistry and doing better than ever now it just takes a lot of hard work and a really good professor like Dougherty.
Prof. Dougherty is an amazing teacher. She's strict when it comes to attendance and disruptions in her class, but as long as you're respectful of the class and her time you should have no issue. Her lectures and delivery of information are great and she will always be there to answer questions.
Definitely not everyone's cup of tea. She's a very strict professor and will not be afraid to call you out. but she genuinely cares about her student's academic success and she's absolutely hilarious. Chem itself is really hard, so in no way is it her fault that the class is difficult. A overall great and caring professor, I would take her again.
Prof Dougherty is the best professor I have had at UTSA. The lectures are a lot of information, but she makes it very entertaining and gives visual examples. Lectures are low-key chemistry with a side of stand up comedy. She also really cares about her students and their education experience. She is very easy to reach on GroupMe or by email.
Great professor who clearly cares about her students. she is super hilarious so get ready to laugh. She is very strict which bothers a lot of people but as long as you are off your phone and not disrupting her class you'll be fine. Gen chem is a really difficult course but she does her best to make sure we're prepared for tests.
I had Professor Dougherty for Ochem 1 and 2 and got an A+ in both. She's hilarious, keeps lectures engaging, and really cares about her students. Ochem is like a new language, so put in 30 minutes to an hour a day. Go to STARS and TA sessions. Practice and watch her videos because it really helps for the ACS final.
Ochem II is a hard class but I would highly recommend taking Professor Dougherty for it. Her grading system is very clear and you will know exactly what she is putting on her exams and how to prepare. Your grade is completely up to the amount of effort you put in.
Professor Dougherty is one of the funniest professors you will ever meet. If you can take her for lab then you should. The grading is very clear and she genuinely wants everyone to succeed. If you are doing fine in the lecture then you'll be fine in the lab.
Amazing professor! She is very clear on the material and provides a lot of resources. There isn't a lot of traditional homework, it's more so about personally responsibility. O Chem is a difficult class but she will set you up for success.
10/10 professor, she's very funny and always keeps class entertaining. You can tell she cares for her students and their grades because she would make sure to stay an hour after class to help us walk through problems and make sure we understood and did well in her class. I hope to have more professors like her.
I absolutely loved this course. Dougherty executed her role perfectly as a professor, and she is one of the big reasons why I excelled in this difficult class. She re-sparked the love I had for chemistry that was previously ruined by the UTSA General Chemistry department. I only wish Dougherty the best life with her cats (and a raise too).
This class has been really hard to learn. The professor is almost always angry and defensive, so it's difficult to ask questions or get any real support from her. On top of that, 80% of the grade is based on exams, and we're basically teaching ourselves the material. Covering three chapters in just two weeks is unrealistic and adds stress.
I'm telling you now I was doing VERY poorly in the class and was failing for 90% of the semester up until exam 4, so if you think you will not pass just wait until then and don't lose hope! This class was very difficult and will take a boatload of studying, do NOT slack off! This professor may seem intimidating, but she genuinely cares!
