Great professor! Doesn't sugar coat anything. She tells it like it is. Makes it easy to follow. Highly recommended. If you take her class, though, don't show up late!!!
She makes class interesting and unable to sleep through, even in the early morning. Her tests were essays, but she did not grade too harshly. She actually made history interesting! I would highly reccomend her.
She's really nice teacher and she lets a lot slide, but her tests can suck.... Read the chapters she's straight from the book. On her topics, she can drag on and it becomes interesting.
I had her for this class and two others and she's probably the best teacher I've ever had. there is a paper you have to write, usually a book review, and her tests are essays. She gives you the questions though...def. take her class, if you can. You won't be bored.
She is the best professors I had at SIUE. The class was NEVER boring. I had an A going into the final and she told everyone else who had A's that we had worked hard enough for her so we didn't have to take the final. She is just an outstanding teacher!
She is an amazing educator and obviously loves the subject matter. She made an 8am class bearable.
I HATE history, but I actually enjoyed her class. She knows how to make it fun and interesting. She's the only teacher I've ever had that said Napolean was, and I quote, "nuttier than a fruitcake!" She's great!
I can't remember what course I had her for, and I don't want to look it up. It was American History, and the focus was the origins of the nation which culminated in a study of the colonies and the Revolutionary War. It was a summer course, but I really enjoyed the class and her choice of assigned reading was great. Solid teacher, tells good stories, and I heartily recommend her.
Awesome teacher test are not too easy..she really likes essay questions. I never really liked history but she makes it fun and tells it in a unique way..very energetic and she has great stories that go along with the material.
Great teacher & very interesting!
She was one of the greatest teachers i have ever had. NO FINAL if you have a B or higher!!!!
Wow, what to say about this class. She is a good teacher and she knows her subject. She often gets excited about what she is teacher, even though none of my class talks really. You MUST prepare for her test. Her test are all essay, and if you don't go over your notes - Expect to receive a bad grade. Overall she is a good teacher though!
Great great Teacher. Made a dry subject very easy to understand. Mad Props!
What a wonderful teacher. She goes over and over the things she wants you to know so you can't miss it on the test and the study guide is given the class after the test so there are no surprises b/c the test is essay and is exactly what she tells you word for word. Her lectures really suck you in whether you like it or not.
She was one of the best teachers i've ever had. Her tests were easy as long as you studied. Her lectures were easy to follow and understand. She loves what she teaches and I would recommend her to anyone!!!
I loved her as an instructor--- she is very passionate about the subject matter and has a wonderful sense of humor.
The best professor I think I've EVER had....ever. I love History, so I could be biased, but she really cares about her students and if they're getting what she's telling them. Very enthusiastic, very thorough.
Good teacher, except her lectures bounce back and forth, so note taking gets complicated. The tests are essays, so you REALLY need to study. One bad test pretty much means a bad grade. Also, make sure you read the book! Don't just get with friends who have...she'll know :)
Fabulous teacher but one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Lectures are hard to follow but she is great. I wish I could take from her no-credit because her passion for history is so evident but tests are nothing but essay (very very hard).
She's nuts as a teacher, a nice person otherwise. Thought I would get A's on the exams, I got low B's. Not a teacher who has the student in mind.
She is very knowledgeable about her subject, loves what she does. Tests are all essay but she gives you the questions way before the test so you have plenty of time to prepare and study. If you do the work you'll do well.
She knew a lot about her topic. She teaches by standing in front of the class and simply talking for the entire hour. The tests were easy, essay style. She expects a lot of information in each question, so it is mandatory to study and learn the little details. Her major project was to read two books and compare them in a paper, it was pretty challe
Worse teacher I have had at SIUE. Test's are ridiculous and she fails to ever teach from the book. Therefore, if you do not know a answer on her sheet she hands out before a test you cannot look it up. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
EXTREMELY HARD TEACHER. SHe teaches somewhat enthusiastically but the classes are boring. 3 tests, all essay. You have to write like 4 pages for each question(aproxx 3 qestions). Shes really rude if your late to class, even if its once. DO NOT TAKE THIS UNLESS U HAVE TO.
Horrible test!, your expected to know enough information for 6 different essays for your test, she will give you 6 essay topics before test and on the day of the test she picks three so if you can't remember tons of information i do not recommend this class, attendance is mandatory, notes are also scattered and hard to take, no PowerPoint
One of the best teachers ever. Exactly what I expect out of a college course. Perfect challenge level. The way she gives the notes answer the essay questions in order that will be on the exam. Pretty much write down what she tells you and you'll be set. Well educated in her topics.
The real question you have to ask yourself is do you like history. If you do and are a major...you will love her...if not, you will think shes too hard... but she is halarious, extremely hard working and knows her stuff very well. she can take you through Americas entire history without ever looking at any notes...shes amazing...Highly Recommended
Lecture style took some getting used to, but ended up being one of my favorite classes. She is kind of scattered with lectures, and you just have to learn to listen for whats important and what is background. Very enthusiastic and a funny person. Also very helpful. Tests are easy as long as you know your stuff. Overall great class.
One of the best Profs on campus
Great teacher. She is pretty scattered in her lectures but if you just write down what she says, you already have your essays for the exams.
She is very cool and if you make her get to know you it helps out a ton on her grading. Also, participate in discussions she loves it.
I loved her! It was hard to get used to at first but then I looked forward to her class each week and signed up for the other half of it for next semester. If you just listen closely and write everything down, you have all the answers to your tests. She really knows a lot about history and she is so passionate about it. Wonderful teacher!
Her lectures are a bit scattered, but she's brilliant and hilarious. If you write down exactly what she says, you've got your midterms in the bag. Everything you turn in is essay; she gives 10 questions that might be on the midterm, then picks four. I will be taking her classes again.
I think she IS the BEST professor on campus. Her lectures are a little scattered and my notes look like a mess. If you write down EVERYTHING she says and prepare for the exams (which she gives you the questions before hand) you'll do well!
She's a GREAT teacher who really knows her stuff. Sometimes it can be hard to keep up while writing notes but you eventually get the hang of it. No laptops allowed in class though. Every test is essay. She gives you the questions for the exams so you know what to be listening for. Give as many details as you can for the essays.
Prof. Harrison is so passionate for history! She makes our country's past come alive. Sometimes her lectures seem scattered or out of order, but she tells you more than the facts; she tells you the story. Exams are essays which she gives the questions to you ahead of time. All you have to do is take good notes and memorize. Definitely recommended!
Prof Harrison is GREAT!!! She is really helpful and she is really enjoys teaching history. I would recommend her to anybody that has to take this class!
You write a lot of notes. You have essay exams and we have a group project. She can be quite tough on the grading but its understandable. I recieved a C even though I think I should had an B. She doesn't like power point. Whatever she says make sure you write down, or at least try.
She's a fantastic teacher if you actually want to learn about history. If not, I would not recommend her. She doesn't teach from the book because she knows so much more than the book. She gives you a lot of information, and if you're not interested it's very easy to dislike the class. But if you put in the effort, you'll get a lot out of it.
She is hilarious and SO passionate about history! She makes the story come alive! Attend class, take down everything she says! Exams are essay. She gives you 5-6 questions ahead of time and on exam day she chooses 3. You get one point per detail you give...so pay attention, take good notes and memorize! No laptops allowed! I LOVE HISTORY NOW!!
If you are good at memorization and essay writing then this is the class for you. All exams are essay, not a lot of other grades involved so must ace every exam to get an A. Shes old school, no laptops no phone no getting up to use bathroom without asking. If taking her bring your big boy pants cause she can be frightening and easily frustrated.
Absolutely ridiculous. You have to ask permission to use the restroom. Does not allow you to take notes with a laptop. Really hard to take notes, does not stress important points. All exams are essay questions. Expects you to memorize a books worth of information for the exams. DO NOT take this class.
I absolutely love Dr. Harrison! She is absolutely amazing. I have taken her for 111B, 200, and 201. She is a great teacher. Her tests are all essays but she gives you ALL of the questions so you can know what to write. LOVE her!
Professor Harrison is very passionate about history. She gives a lot of information in a short amount of time and does not use Powerpoints or write any of it down. She expects deeper understanding of historical events than her lessons allow for. If you can avoid taking this class, do whatever you can to do so!
Tori is an amazing professor! Her class is not easy though. You have to come to every class to get the notes. But if you do and take good notes her tests are easy because she gives you the questions ahead of time. She makes the class interesting and fun! I hated history, but now I really enjoy it!
While hard work and effort was necessary to get an A, I loved this class. Tori knows her history and is passionate about it. Such an interesting class. Take detailed notes in class and you will ace every test. You MUST go to class to get the information for the tests. All tests are short essay. Final is long essay. 1 book review required.
Great teacher, attendance is mandatory. Very Knowledgeable about her area of focus, always tries to keep students into it, even for 8am
Dr. Harrison is a professor who cares about her students and actually learns their names! All tests are long essays where you basically need to memorize everything you've learned for that section. It it not clear what she wants you to answer for her tests. There is always a literature reading to do through the semester that you will be tested on.
I took Harrison for online History 201 over winter break. Granted it was an advanced online class and I was expecting to work hard, I would do the assigned work and provide my responses on the discussion board but would then get mediocre grades and no explanation of what I did wrong. Also, the midterm was 2 1/2 hours and extremely specific.
Very helpful, funny, and obviously passionate about history. She was a tough grader but was also very clear about what she wanted and if you met these requirements, then it wasn't a problem.
Lots of things crammed into class. Tons of not taking and expects you to know every single thing she says on the tests and quizzes. Lots of reading. Very heavy lecture. Will not ever take any class with her again.
Does not use blackboard or powerpoint/handouts. Your notes consists of whatever words pop out of her mouth, it is up to you to decide what to write down (write down everything she says). This class is literally all essays. Essay format tests (3) and an in class book report. The quizzes are hard but study what is highlighted/bolded in the chapter.
Heads up Tori does not use blackboard or power point for her lectures, she just talks and occasionally will write important info on the board. All her tests are written tests, she gives you the questions you will write about for the test before hand. There is one group project. She is VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE about history and is funny too.
This woman literally hands you the tests WEEKS in advance. Bring a wrist brace to tests cause you'll need one. All tests are essay questions, she's funny and doesn't hold back. Show up on time and don't try to leave early without letting her know. If you like History, I would advice you to take Prof Harrison.
Absolutely fantastic professor. Has extensive knowledge of American history and is very responsive to any comment or question a student may have. Does not use Blackboard or PowerPoint so it is a little difficult to take notes or know what your grade is. Make sure you take detailed notes. Gives you the exams ahead of time. One group presentation.
Read a book that had absolutely nothing to do with the learning process -- extra work for nothing. Graded assignments but provided no feedback on the grade she gave you. An enormous amount of reading. NO outlines! Only 2 exams and one covered 9 chapters. Basically taught myself. Choose someone else if you have the option!
I took her class online. Each test was 150 questions, took 2.5 hours. Tons of Reading. She didn't require to reply to other students, which was nice. I don't think she handed out a perfect grade ever. Tough grader. I received a 17/20 on all of my posts. I have no idea why, no feedback. She grades more on grammar and punctuation than on content.
Tori was awesome! Very interesting lectures. She will even let you turn in your essays for the test ahead of time, and she will give you pointers on how to get a better grade!
Dr. Harrison is amazing. You can tell she is super knowledgeable in her profession and isn't afraid to talk about certain topics. Yes, her class is a lot of reading but the amount is the same for any other History course. Her exams are tough, she gives 6 questions the beginning of the unit and test day you have to answer 3 in essay form (blue book)
Online class. 16 or 17 out of 20 on all of my discussion posts, yet all addressed her questions. She said she rarely gives A's. Doesn't give feedback, nor does she outline her grading criteria--good luck guessing how to get an A. All tests are 150 questions. Graded my 2 page responses one minute apart; she must intrinsically know the grade. LOUSY!
Took her online class. She gives at least one assignment a week, sometimes 2. Has turn you turn in assignments on Wednesday at 5 PM, which is the weirdest time imo. Also has a 3-5 page book report, and 2 tests that are 150 questions each. It feels like the teacher thinks that this is the only class that her students are taking.
I took her online US history course in 5 weeks. It was a lot of content to cover, but it did't feel overwhelming. We had two in depth discussion boards (DB) a week and two exams. The exams were 150 questions so prepare for that, but it was multiple choice and if you did your readings and studied you'll be okay. Don't expect a perfect db grade.
This class was way too hard for a freshman level class, the tests were 2 hours and were so hard. I ended the class with a B and i was one of the highest grades. Her class dropped my GPA. There is other professors that have discussions and actually help you learn, Go with them.
Does not care if you are not passing. She is a very tough grader. All of the exams are essays and you must provide all details. Does not use blackboard so you do not really know your grade. If you skip class, she marks you down and you lose credit. The lecture are of her just speaking, so there are no slides or anything. She is a terrible.
Prof. Harrison is a tough grader. Do not expect to get an A in her course as she makes it clear that it is hard to do. I personally received feedback on assignments and quick responses from her. Her exams are very heavy though being 150 questions each with only 2 hours. I would take a course with her again as she is passionate about what she does.
This class was unnecessarily difficult. Most people take this as a general education class or an elective. You had one discussion post every week. You had to read 40-50 pages and expected to write a prompt of only 300 words. She always took off points for not being thorough enough but you couldn't with the small word count. 2 exams 150 questions.
I have been in this class for a month and already strongly dislike it. This class should not be as difficult as it is. I have never been graded so hard on discussion boards. She does provide feedback to the whole class on the discussions, but half of it is about our "poor performance." If you need this class to be easy, not the professor for you.
Quite literally the worst professor I have ever had. I hope she reads this and gets a reality check. She is rude, disrespectful, and overall the worst. One discussion post a week, worth 30 points. Says in her Syllabus a 30/30 is very rare. If I could name call in this post I would. She needs to be fired. I beg you, do not take her. I dropped.
I already wrote one post, but she deserves another. Talks to her students with no respect. Acts like she's a great professor, but in reality everyone I know that is taking her has a C or lower. Tempted to write tot he dean about her, and how unprofessional she is. FIRE HER. If you were to look up "The Worst" in the dictionary... she would show up.
Difficult for no reason. I did not miss a single assignment and turned every one in on time and still got a C in the class. You have 2 huge exams that are 150 questions with a time limit of 2 hours. 120 minutes to complete 150 questions is not ideal. Very tough grader and LOTS of reading (40-50 pages), just to get a 23/30 on the discussions.
Doesn't use PP so lecture is VERY hard to take notes on. Talks so fast you cannot understand/comprehend. Assigns A TON of reading and expects you to memorize it ALL. Forgets this is a general ed requirement and not everyone is a history major. VERY difficult to understand what to study without memorizing the entire textbook and hard to follow. 2/10
You could only miss four classes. There are very few assignments and the points from the tests extremely outweigh the other assignments. The tests are all essay exams but you know the possible promts before you even start learning the material. She is very very but sometimes it can come out as mean.
Tori is an AMAZING instructor. She does not use PP or posts lecture material on Bb, attending class is crucial. Ask permission to audio record her lectures, as she does talk fast and can get off on tangents occasionally. There are not many assignments in this class, most are either quizzes or exams. She provide questions for the exams beforehand.
Seriously don't know how she has such a high rating. As other reviews say, she doesn't use powerpoint or anything, and she goes on tangents so frequently it is so hard to have organized notes. Only grades are papers, quizzes, and tests. She also doesn't give feedback on your assignments so you have no idea what you did wrong. DONT TAKE HER
Very disrespectful, she gets off track easily so it's hard to take great notes, especially since she post no extra notes on Blackboard. If you miss on day of class you'll be far behind and lost the next time you come because there's nothing to go off of. Take my advice and avoid her as a teacher. You're GPA will drop, it's hard to pass her class.
There are no lecture PowerPoint notes she literally just talks the entire class which is fine but if your anything like me , my attention span is very short so it was very hard to pay attention. I ended up sick missing multiple classes and she wouldnt take the late work which is how I ended up not passing her class. But very nice woman overall
Tori did not provide clear instructions on what she wanted for our writing assignments or tests. She was very rude and acts like you are dumb when you don't know something she asks. She does not tell you what you are doing wrong and is not helpful when you ask. She doesn't use Powerpoint or Blackboard. She stands in the front of the room and talks.
I never thought that I could hate history any more than I did before, but somehow I do after taking her class. Nearly impossible to achieve anything over a B, and I've done my fair amount of studying/notes for her assignments. She loves to make you write, that's all this class really is. Not a good teacher, and very rough with grading criteria.
I loved her! You have to show up to lectures, if you miss one and can't get the notes then go to her office hours and she will try to help but you need a friend for this class. My advice, find a history major and stick with them. you have to study for this class but you will learn a lot
Harrison can be rude, but typically you do not have to deal with her directly. She does grade harshly, and does not give direct feedback on what you can improve. There is one assignment due Wednesday of each week. Exams are very long, but all multiple choice. Assignments only require about an hours worth of work each week.
I failed Dr. Harrison's class the first time, which was entirely my fault, but when I retook it and attended, I found I enjoyed her class and presence. Her course requires effort, as her tests can be heavily graded, but she was a wonderful teacher. I'm sad she retired from SIUE—she was amazing, and I'd love to have her again.
Maybe it's just the fact that I took one of her online classes, but the workload was excessive. So much reading every week, and then we had to write a discussion board that was mostly application and had a strict word limit. We never got feedback on our work, and it just overall wasn't an enjoyable class. She wasn't the best, but not the worst.
