I am currently taking her class and feel like she just loves to be on a soap box. She tends to go on and on about the same thing and then blows through the concepts that are to be learned. Her test are somewhat difficult but she does give extra credit worth 25 pts each, which really helps your grade if your tests scores aren't the best.
Lectures are very interesting and informative. She's very knowledgeable but not afraid to admit it if she can't answer a question that is out of her area of study. She's very fair and is available to anyone who needs extra help. The volunteer assignment is a challenge but since no weekly homework is assigned I think it's a trade off.
This class is torture. The teacher is rigid and not very available for help! She is an adjunct so communication for help is to done through email..which isn't very helpful :(
I currently took her class, and all she does is lecture and has us write EVERYTHING, she doesnt do anything fun for us to learn, she is knowledgeable but not a very good teacher, i was disappointed.
Honestly, she can get on a soapbox but she tells the honest truth. I would highly recommend her if you want to get a degree in this field. If you are doing prerequistes, stray away unless you have time to memorize the key concepts.
Ms. Merritt had so much experience under her belt and it showed. The class was extremely useful, intriguing, and though provoking. She has such a passion for sociology, it's inspiring. Great class, and GREAT teacher! I highly recommend her - if you have a choice. I wish she taught more Sociology courses at CGCC
Great teacher. I'm currently taking her and she's really making me question many of the issues facing my generation. Tests are hard, but fair; and she gives us a review sheet before each exam. I only wish she taught more Sociology classes.
Take the Class! It'll really open your eyes.
I wish she would give a basic handout that allowed notetaking in addition to the basic needed concepts.very hard to write down everything needed and actually pay attention..but otherwise she is a great instructor. Open to debate, and genuine concern for the issues at hand. Glad i got her for this class.Tests are a tough.
This instructor may be the best speaker I've ever had. Could seriously have her own show on CNN. The course was also very interesting. I enjoyed going to class. The discussion really helps with putting the material we are learning into everyday life.
I really don't know what people are talking about when they rate her highly... She is not a clear speaker, asks you bring a camera to class to take pictures of her notes because she goes too fast, and thinks of herself WAY too highly as an instructor. AVOID!
Exceptional professor! I think this class is a perfect example of how a class should be run. Teacher was energetic (even at 7AM) and passionate about what she taught. I had some work issues this semester and she worked with me to make sure that I could continue taking the course. The class does move fast, but manageable. Great teacher!
Wow! By far, the best instructor that I've had at CGCC. She makes the material interesting and this is coming from someone who has little interest in sociology. If you're going to take this class, do yourself a favor and take it with her.
Ms. Merritt is really into what she teaches, so the class stays interesting. You will learn a lot. I recommend her highly, BUT.. if you are one to skip class, not pay attention or not take notes, don't take this class. You have to show up and pay attention and you'll do well.
Excellent teacher! Passionate about what she teaches. She opens your mind and touches bases on all the problems we have in society. She paints a clear picture to where you can understand it. Very smart, does her research, knows her stuff. Highly recommended before she transfers to a more expensive school!
She is a phenomenal instructor! Her class inspired me to expand my knowledge and understanding of society on my own. Hopefully I?ll have the opportunity to take higher level sociology classes with her as an instructor in the future.
I think that Mrs. Merritt is a fantastic instructor and is well prepared. She is knowledgeable and actively engages learning conversations in our class. I feel lucky to have recieved such a good instructor for a course I knew nothing about.
The course was always interesting. The instructor was full of energy and knowledge on the topic at hand. She really knows how to engage the class. Her passion for the subject shines through in her teaching.
Mrs. Merrit was a very enthusiastic teacher with alot of information that really opens your eyes. But at the same time she is really biased on certain topics. When taking her class just remember to be as liberal as possible and you should get an A. In terms of a text book do not get one. It was barley used in class.
She is by far the BEST professor I've had at CGCC. I took Sociology as a pre-req and now I think I'm going to major in it! I highly recommend the class.
I took this because it looked interesting and the class didn't disappoint. It was a huge eye-opener. Tests are hard, but the teacher is very fair. The discussions are really interesting and get you thinking about things around you in a whole new way. I'm even thinking of taking another sociology course even though my major doesn't require it.
Great class to take. She is really passionate about sociology. Make sure you pay attention, take notes, and show up on time for EVERY class. Speak your mind, it will be worth it. Really great teacher!
Interesting class.
Very knowledgeable professor. Her class is interesting, but the topics discussed can make you anxious. I learned a lot from her, and if you study, you should get an A.
Great class. I learned so much more than when I took it in high school. Not just terminology- but she applies concepts to real world stuff that makes it relevant to today. I wish she taught another class...I'd definitely take it!
Great class. I too this because several friends recommended it and was so glad that I did. Professor Merritt is a great teacher. She really engages the students and brings all kinds of current events into the classroom for us to discuss.
I am currently in this class and I would never reccomend anyone to take this class with this teacher. I personally think that she is very bias and has favorites. I spent over 100 dollars on a book that I never even used because all she does is lecture while we take notes.
Took this class because it was a prereq and so glad I did. Class got into some great discussions and topics were totally relevant. The professor was always available for help really knew how to make sociology interesting. I'd recommend this course to anyone...only wish she taught other courses at CGCC.
Awesome class...awesome teacher. This class was a prereq for my major and now I'm thinking of minoring or majoring in sociology.
Fantastic professor! She does not spend a much time on the book, but you will need it because the chapters are covered test material. She gives you chapter study guid re:concepts and theory's she expects you to know. Tests are hard. The topics she lectures on are relevant and timely. She encourges class discussion and opposing viewpoints.
Best class I have ever taken at CGCC. If you are at all interested in the world around you (and even if you aren't)- take this class!
I took this course because a friend who took it last semester took and said it would really change my perspective. We're half-way through and I'm so glad I'm taking the course. Not only am being taught Professor Merritt really challenges us all to think outside the box. This class should be required for everybody. Great class, great professor!
Teaches all material but goes off on her opinion. Class goes by really slow. What we learn is interesting. The tests are hard plus you have a couple of essays to write afterward. And you are required to do 10 hrs. Of volunteer work for an assignment.
This is class should be mandatory for all students. I feel like I've been duped for all these years and now know so much more about the world around me. Tests are hard, but study guides are given. Great professor.
Don't buy the textbook! She never uses it, most of the material is based off her opinion. She is a really interesting woman and inspiring, although her class did make me depressed about America everyday. Tests are hard study and write all papers to her opinion and she will grade you well. There is barely any homework.
Passionate about her views, and definitely challenges the status quo. But preaches unsubstantiated claims. Complains about America being duped, but just preaches from the alternative side without seeing a lot of the information she preaches is bs. pretend you like it. Study off the guides. Get an A.
Great class! She covers a lot of information, but is really interesting and keeps the class engaged. Everything she says is supported with government. Can be a little depressing, but information is something that everyone should know.
Very passionate on her views, as in literal screaming during lectures. Overwhelms you with pp slides so dont bother copying them.. take pics instead as she doesnt post any material online whatsoever. No need for textbook. No real schedule of when some assignments are due, so you are forced to go to every class. Mandatory 10hrs comm service.
Great class. Lots of information and lots of note taking, but after learning so much in this class, it's stuff that I want to know and be able to go back to. Very passionate about the material...kindof makes me want to do something more than I'm doing with my life and in the community.
Very intelligent. Lots of note taking, but so worth it. If you pay attention in class the tests are easy. I enjoyed every second in that class with her, I learned so much from Vikki and honestly look up to her. She's very passionate about her material, but that's what makes this class even better. She actually KNOWS what she's teaching.
Best class I've had Chandler Gilbert yet. I'm planning on taking more sociology classes just to be informed about stuff.
Amazing class. Took it as an elective and now I want to major in sociology.
I am currently in her class and this teacher is extremely passionate . She bases the entire class off of her opinions and barely touches on the important things. Her tests are extremely hard, but she warned us from the very beginning that they were hard. She never uses canvas so don't expect her to ever respond to anything you ask her.
I took this class as a prerequisite for my major but the material is so important that I think everyone should take Sociology. Professor Merritt is really passionate and inspiring and does a great job of connecting current events with all the terms and theory in the book. Great course!
I took the class a while back. She mentioned at the beginning that grades didn't matter to her and everyo would all get an A or a B. That didn't happen. I respected her though because she was so passionate about what she taught. She was also willing to talk after class. I got an A and I worked hard for it. Learn how to write a research paper first.
Best teacher by far that I've had at CGCC so far. Wish she taught more classes; I'd take them all (and I'm not even majoring in sociology). Tests are hard, but she gives a study sheet and is always willing to stay after to help with questions.
Took her online class at CAC- evidently she's far more engaging and capable in a classroom than an online format. Don't answer discussions according to your opinion, don't expect all links to work, or quick replies, & accelerated classes will leave guesses on testsassigments. Those grievances aside, it's not an impossible class and it's useful
At first wasn't a fan of the class at all. Left loving it. She has so much information to share that is so interesting. Hearing her views on things was so eye opening and made you want to dig deeper into topics. My favorite part was no matter how different her opinion was, she would listen to and respect yours.
Took this class online at CAC- online classes are not an option at CGCC. The professor provided fast feedback (usually within 48 hours) and was willing to help with any difficulties. Discussions were really interesting and challenged me to think about things differently. Tests were easy and when I emailed the professor, she always took the time to
Awesome instructor. There is a lot of information, but she does let you take pictures of the notes. If you show up every class, pay attention and do the assignments (not that many), there is no reason you should get anything lower than an A. I wouldn't recommend this class if you are lazy, but overall this is not a tough class. Very interesting!
Best class I have ever taken. I feel lucky to have had her as she should be teaching at a 4 year university with all material she knows. Great discussions; always willing to hear other points of view (as long as they are backed up with data) and fair graded.
Taking this class over the summer. Great course- really eye opening. Tests are hard but lectures are really interesting and get the class thinking. Love the class.
This is probably the worst class I have ever taken. I just finished up the summer course. There aren't many assignments to turn in, but she was a pretty rough grader, you must know APA format or you'll get docked. If you love listening to someone else's opinions & being told you're wrong for thinking another way - then you'll love this course!
Took the course over the summer and loved it. Lectures were really interesting and challenged me to think about current events in a different way. If all you want is course that asks you to memorize and regurgitate info- this isn't the course for you. If you want to really examine the economy, politics, and social issues, the class is a must!
Great course. Didn't plan on liking the class or subject, but loved it and looked forward to it every week. Professor really provides a interesting view of the world and gets you excited to be part of it. Even planning on taking another sociology class for fun not credit.
The lectures are long and boring and are presented with PowerPoint. If there isn't anything you understand, ask she she'll explain better. Most of her data on the PowerPoint is out of date. Also the exams are worded differently and term's definitions are never given exactly word for word. Studying is a must or you wont pass the class.
Took this class for credit and it changed my life. Lectures are by PowerPoint but she lets you take pictures so you can participate and listen (and you want to) the information is really relevant and important. Taking another sociology class and even thinking of changing my major.
Great course. Took as a required class and ended up loving it. Lots of discussions on current events. This professor makes you think critically. If you're not up for that or haven't ever done it before, get ready for a wake up call. I learned so much about myself and the world around me.
Tests are hard !
Best course at CGCC and best professor I've had so far. She is inspirational and really cares about all her students.
Super long lectures and hard test. Gives extra credit and is nice. She really only cares about her opinion-so stay quiet during lecture. Super easy homework-one big essay 3 test and 1 final.
Really amazing class. The professor is so passionate about the subject matter, she makes me want to get involved. Supports all information with data and facts that are really interesting and make you think.
Taking the class now and like it a lot more than I thought I would. Teacher is really passionate and knows her stuff. Lectures are really interesting and she is always open to other people's point of view. Tests are hard, but she gives extra credit to help.
Lectures were exciting and kept me attentive. She knows her information better than most teachers. No Homework. I'd recommend doing the extra credit because her tests are unnecessarily hard. 1 major essay. She focuses on Macro Sociology rather than Micro. Interesting class and would recommend taking her. Warning: She pushes her political beliefs.
Great professor who truly has a great way of bringing us into the world of sociology. I would recommend this Proffesor to you guys because she will relate your life and really get you thinking. You may go into the class leaning one way and leave with a brand new opinion. She's an amazing individual who will fight for you if you're having trouble!!
Amazing Semester
I took this course a couple of years ago. The fact that I am just now posting a review shows that I haven't forgotten about it. But that's not a good thing in this case. She is a liberal bully and tends to demonize you if you disagree with her stances. She will literally stand on top of a desk screaming during lectures. Tough tests. Community serv.
Taking the course now and it the best class I have taken at CGCC. Terrific instructor that really keeps your attention even early in the morning.
Everyone should to take this class. It helps us all become more aware of how we are socialized, why we view things the way we do, and gives us new vantage points to look from. She gives the great online discussions, they were the best of any online class I've ever taken, just respond in time for full points. Will need to read the book, fair grader
Absolutely the best teacher I ever had! Her lectures are really long and jam packed with information. She loves it when students interact with her and it's entertaining watching her debate with students. Her quizzes are online, and open book. It's not even time so it's an easy A! Her class is very eye opening and interesting.
Let's just say it is her way or the highway! Her class is based on her opinion only!!! So don't try to disagree with her! Not a sociology class at all!!!! More of like a social studies class/ environmental science class. She is very liberal! And makes that known! If you are interested in sociology choose another teacher!
Did not really enjoy her class. Very Liberal and class is based on her opinions and what she thinks is best for this country. Openly disrespects conservatives and current President. Has a lot of quizzes online that are open note, which will help your grade if you do well. But that is probably the only positive thing about this class.
Amazing class. Taught about issues around me that I never really thought about but now want to do something to fix. Great lectures, answers every question asked, and really makes you think about the world around you. Everyone should have to take sociology.
Awesome professor! truly cares about her students, and knows how to keep students interested in the class. I would definitely would take her again! Even thinking of majoring in social justice at ASU.
Best class that I've taken at CGCC. Learned so much about myself and the world around me. Class discussions were really interesting and really made you think differently about so many issues affecting our lives daily. Going to take another sociology class next semester for fun.
Best class I have taken at CGCC. I have learned more about myself and society than I ever expected and am now changing my approach to my major because of this course. Lectures are really interesting and relate to so many things happening in the world today. I wish she taught more classes at CGCC....I would definitely take them.
Taking sociology now and wish I had taken it when I started at CGCC. It is changing the way I think about the world, my major, and even my relationships. Lectures are interesting. Don't sit in the back row and think you won't be called on. Would love to take another sociology class if Prof Merritt taught it.
Just finished taking this class and wish it was a year long class. I am actively participating in my community and even thinking of getting involved in politics as a result of this class. Professor really knows her stuff and backs up all our discussions with interesting videos and data. Tests are easy. Study guide given for final.
I took this class 4 years ago and I'm still sharing information with friends and family. Best class and best professor I ever had at CGCC. The lectures were really interesting and changed the way I view the world and my role in it. Couldn't recommend this course highly enough.
If your looking for someone who loves to share their opinions and doesn't teach you the actual concepts for Sociology then this is the professor/class for you. Every class you'll feel like you can't share your opinion because you will just be shot down. If you do say something that does not agree with what she's teaching, you will be 'wrong'...
With all the crazy in the world right now, everyone should take a sociology class. Really interesting to see current events and issues through a sociological lens. Making me rethink everything I thought I knew. Class is easy and discussions are interesting.
I took Sociology in high school and thought this would be an easy A. The class isn't hard, but I'm learning so much more than I did in high school. Professor Merritt ties theory and concepts to current events and really challenges students to become advocates for social justice. She's a great teachers and the class is great so far.
Just finished this course and discovered that I love sociology. Professor really opened my eyes to events in the world. I'm even thinking of minoring in sociology in the future. Best course I have taken at CGCC and best professor I have had working toward my AA so far.
Took this SOC101 as a requirement and wish I had taken this class earlier at CGCC. Professor gives amazing lectures and allows everyone to share their opinions and thoughts (she just asks that you back it up with facts and data). We covered so many important topics. I left wanting to learn more .
Prof. Merritt is one of those professors you will never forget. She's the best professor at CGCC, Amazing discussions and very insightful about current events. I would literally take this class again just for the lectures and discussions. Just wish she taught more classes at CGCC.
a lot of extra credit opportunities, all online tests and good conversations in class, she only wants to talk about what she likes, she doesn't look at different perspectives and skips over the micro perspective all together! She is a hardcore liberal! Though you can still voice your opinion and she'll hear it, but she is the last to speak.
Professor Merritt is a terrific instructor. I took SOC101 because it is required for my major but now think I might want to minor in sociology. Her lectures really make you think and challenge you to question much of what we have been socialized to believe in. I find myself sharing all her information with friends and family. Highly recommend her.
Professor Merritt is hands down the best professor I have had at CGCC so far. Her lectures really make you think and she is so passionate about sociology. Even at 7AM, I find myself setting my alarm 20 minutes early just to make sure I hear all of her lectures. She also makes time to answer questions and really cares about all her students.
Just finished this this class and found myself surprised at how much I liked it. Professor Merritt encourages great class discussions where we can share opinions but strongly encourages students to find facts to support those opinions and to check sources to validate the references. I feel like a learned for the first time how to think critically.
Just started this class and I absolutely love it. I leave every day excited to share what I have learned. If the first few weeks are any indication, this is by far my favorite class at CGCC to date. The professor is amazing.
Just graduated from ASU. I took SOC101 with Professor Merritt more than 3 years ago and I'm still thinking and sharing the information I learned in this class. No other professor has impacted me more. I only hope she realizes the difference she is making. If she is still teaching at CGCC, take her class!
Just had our last lecture today and I am truly bummed that I won't have this class anymore. The professor is so passionate and connects everyday life to sociological concepts in a way that my other social science teachers haven't. Wish I could take all my sociology classes with her!
This is my third sociology class... and I've got to say that I learned more in Prof Merritt's class than the other two combined. Her classes are lecture-heavy, but so interesting that I made sure to set my alarm to get up and hear her speak. She encourages everyone to share their opinion and is really nice. Wish she taught more than just SOC101.
Taking SOC101 now and my only criticism is that it starts at 7AM. Professor Merritt is so inspirational; she makes me want to get more involved. Love her lectures and and the class discussions. Should be a mandatory class for all incoming students. Really makes you think!
I took sociology in high school and thought this would be more of the same. I was wrong. I'm leaving the class knowing so much more about sociology than I ever did and with a much better understanding of social injustice. Really amazing class!
As long as you do the assignments on time you will be fine and learn some things along the way. She has a pretty straightforward course and she gives pretty clear instructions. She puts all the assignments due on Sunday so you have all week to finish them. I recommend this class
Professor Merritt is my favorite teacher at CGCC. Her assignments are really interesting, she gives good feedback, and is always available for help. I feel I am much more aware of many social issues that I just never paid attention to before this class.
I took this class a few years back and, now, with so much racism and inequality in the news, I find myself thinking about Professor Merritt's lectures almost everyday. I wish I had paid closer attention back then, but she really inspired me to want to know more and be more involved.
I went into SOC101 thinking I wanted to be a vet and left determined to help correct some of the injustices discussed in class. Five years later, I just got into law school and plan to become a civil rights attorney. It all started with Professor Merritt's SOC101 class. Without her, I wouldn't have found this career path.
I took this online course as a pre-req for my dental hygiene class and absolutely loved it. I found myself talking about the weekly discussion topics during dinners with friends and family and really started thinking about all the issues in the world today. Great course and easy A as long as you do the weekly work.
Took this class online last semester. Professor Merritt is a terrific instructor. She gives really good feedback that makes you think more about the assignment questions and is really responsive. Everything was graded quickly and she worked with me when I had a family emergency and needed some flexibility.
She is BOOMER do not take class if you value sanity she doesnt know how to grade and will dock you points if it doesnt fit her description. Selfish teacher here to teach herself. No passion in teaching anymore.
Professor Merritt is a great teacher. She gives really good feedback that makes you think even more about each discussion and grades everything within 2-3 days. She was always responsive to my emails and when a family issue came up she worked with me so that my grade didn't drop. Tough grader, but very clear directions for all assignments.
I took SOC101 online last semester and LOVED IT! The material is so interesting and Mrs. Merritt always graded assignments within 2-3 days and gave great feedback and that really made think about the discussion posts even more. Just be sure to follow the directions for all discussions and assignments and read the online textbook....easy A.
Still taking this class now but really enjoy the course. Professor Merritt is great about grading and gives good feedback. You do have to follow all the directions which are spelled out very clearly and she does dock you 1 point if you wait until the last minute on the discussions but the weekly questions are really interesting and make you think.
Prof Merritt was an okay professor but needs improvement. She's very intricate and will take off points if your work does not match her description. She sends very detailed feedback but will sometimes question your knowledge if you say something she doesn't like. Also, too many political topics for discussion boards. Not sure if that's allowed.
Just finished this course and it was the highlight of my semester. I really enjoyed the discussions. They were all related to current events and her feedback really made you think more about the topic. She was willing to work with me during a family emergency and really responsive when I had a question about an assignment. Overall, a great course!
She is great, but I definitely wouldn't take her again. She is very liberal and will dock you points if you don't answer a question exactly how she wants you to. I found myself getting frustrated with a lot of the discussion posts with how one-sided the questions were. Some are very hard to answer if you are religious. She gives excellent feedback.
Finishing SOC101 right now. Discussions were really interesting and about real world issues through a sociological lens. Professor gives great feedback and really encourages us to think in a bigger way about the social problems in society and what influences our perceptions and thoughts. Great course!
VERY VERY Liberal. It is a very easy class if you just say what she wants to hear, but I always said what I believed to be true and she WILL 100% mark you down points for disagreeing with her.. Pretty lame and prideful from a teacher. She always tried to argue anything in the notes section of assignments if it wasn't a far left answer.
Took this course over the summer and loved it. Professor Merritt gives great and quick feedback on discussions and not only grades the questions answered but always used feedback as a way to encourage me to think more sociologically about the weekly topic. Wish she taught other sociology classes at CGCC.
Just finished SOC101 and I loved the course. All discussions applied chapter information to real world issues and required some outside research but they were really interesting and made you think. Professor Merritt responded quickly to my questions and accommodating with my medical issue. All quizzes are open notes. Great course!
I took this class online during the summerfor 7 weeks. A lot of reading and writing every week. Discussions are straight forward. Weekly written assignments require a good amount of research and she is a tough grader for those. Class is well organized and she gives good feedback on each assignment. Textbook is cheap, less than $2 per chapter.
I just finished SOC101 and loved the course. Really interesting weekly discussions and assignments. Many required outside reading and research, but the topics were not only current but relevant to my life. I learned a lot about society and myself. Prof Merritt was also available to answer questions and gave great and quick feedback.
