very unclear instructions, harsh on some apects and way too easy on others. don't feel like i got anything out of this class.
Very fun class. She keeps us entertained and it's actually stuff that matters. I was totally afraid to speak in public, but she makes it seem like the easiest thing in the world.
Dr. Newsom's class made me feel like my opinion matters. I now think like I could say something about some very complicated life situations. She makes everyone feel welcome, and while the projects are big, they are real-life projects taht matter. I am glad I took this and will take more classes from her.
Dr. Newsom is great! She's fun, interesting, and intelligent, and loves to bring pop culture and understandable references into her lessons. She's incredibly easy to talk to, as well, and very helpful. There's a lot of work, but mostly on topics you choose yourself, so it's not terribly difficult. I'd recommend her for any communications class.
Dr. V was fantastic. Intercultural Communications is a tough subject and she taught it well. She was willing to answer any question and created an engaging and downright fun classroom environment. She has high expectations, but she equips you to meet them. I am looking forward to my next class with her!
Fun class, not what I expected but very interesting. A lot of work but it's all work that applies to real life.
If you want an easy "A" take her class. I would not recommend anyone take this class that isn't liberal. She interupts with her own ideas so get used to it. She focused more on her own thoughts and beliefs than how to understand others. more philosophy than communications -_- regret taking her class to the max. although I got an A
Great class. Best I've taken at OC. I was not looking forward to this class but she made it fun and interesting. And I will use these skills--I've already found myself using good speech techniques and I understand why their important. Highly recommend this teacher and this class. Will take more of her classes this fall.
Yeah, that was an easy "A". Although, I'm sure that if you didn't read the material you might not get a great grade, but I bet you'll pass no problem. Great class, though. I'd take another from her just because the content was interesting and I did learn a lot. Good instructor!
I would not recommend her online course. She was incredibly unorganized, she changed due dates all of the time, she would assign homework that she hadn't posted yet. my classmates and I were constantly emailing each other to clarify on her instructions and due dates. All of the assignments she gave were so vague in description as well.
This is my second time in a class with Dr. V & she is still awesome. We had a lot of technical issues with the online portion of the class, but she did everything she could to ensure that we could get the grade we deserved & access the materials we needed. Highly recommend her, as long as you have a sense of humour & an ability to think critically.
Worst ever- so confusing, wouldn't answer emails- assignment/grades never posted- asked for my grades 3 times, still nothing. She blamed everything on angel or us, even tho it was her fault she couldnt get material out in time Assgns made no sense- just a bunch of confusing words with no meaning. Dont buy book- all slides online
She is my least favorite teacher I have ever taken. Ever. I took public speaking but the class did not have 1 day of instruction on how to deliver and present a speech well. Which is what 3/4 of your grade is based upon. Learned just about nothing. What ever you do, DO NOT TAKE HER!
Interesting class. A lot of problems with the online system but the material was great. Easy to do the modules and keep up with the work. Everything was laid out (when the Angel worked the right way) and good. It is a lot of work, i wasn't expecting that in a 101 class. But if you do the work, and can actually read, you'll do great.
Public speaking rocked. I don't know why someone else on here said it was a bad class. I love Dr. Newsom and intend to take more of her classes. She makes the class fun and you learn all the time. And yes we did learn how to organize and present our speeches--at least those of us who came to class did.
Yeah--you have to come to class and do the work. She makes it so everyone can get the A if you do the work. She let's us write our own exams--so if you actually keep up with the materials it's hard to fail. But lazy students should NOT take her classes. No ambition will get you no-where.
She was great. She writes her own modules and makes the concepts and theories clear by explaining the back ground. I learned how to apply and identify the theories and concepts to various life situations
I actually enjoy her lectures and learning the history and the development on how public speaking is today and the reasons for it.
The class as both a textbook you can buy and one tha Dr. V wrote. Just read Dr.V's. the book you can skip buying which seems to be her goal. You hav to do a social justice project which you have to create. You will need group work for it. Don't pick lazy group members. Also a test--open book. It's all thinking questions so go deep.
Fantastic class & teacher! Subject is not easy, but Dr. Newsom makes it interesting and accessible. Attendance is not required, but if you want to pass you NEED to be t&here. A lot of the teaching is done through class discussion. This is not an easy class, but it is a LOT of fun. She expects a lot of participation. Highly recommend.
Very bad professor. She never answers emails or posts grades on time. She is flighty and unorganized and blames everybody else for it. Also the grading is very subjective its all based on her perception of you. She has a potluck every night and is more worried about food then starting class on time! Very vague instructions as well. Do not reccomend
She is literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Her assignments have no clarity at all to them, leaving me clueless on what the assignment is even supposed to be. She is incredibly slow at grading, and is nearly impossible to get ahold of. I have learned nothing and urge anyone to avoid this "professor" at all costs.
Great class. Lots of fun in-class activities. It's the only class I really want to attend. The class is part online so one day a week attendance. She makes sure you know your stuff so the tests and assignments are easy.
Great class. Great teacher. She kept this class really interesting and it could have been very boring. I will be taking more classes from her. I only wish she taught more different classes more often.
Awesome class. You get to debate about werewolves. Seriously. One of the best classes I ever took.
Had no problems. Yes you do have to work for your grade. But after reading the comments here I will say she focus a lot on the history. I appreciated the overview. Interesting. But as for speeches go over it with her. She will help you. By far I enjoyed this clasd a lot. She is respectful, but very liberal. But I respect that.
This class was challenging but fun. Be prepared for your class to have to organize itself, because she leaves most of everything up to the class. It is good for teaching us how to self-manage. DO NOT BUY THE TEXT BOOK.
Excellent class. I learned more than from any other class. I never thought the class would cover so much. And I got to do stuff that will help me get a job. Seriously. Take the class.
I took this class because it filled a time slot, and it ended up being my favorite class of the quarter. I would recommend any class she teaches, it will be interesting, fun, and you'll learn a lot without painful lectures or awful tests. My favorite Professor.
This class was a lot of fun. It was a little intimidating to put together a speech and you learn how much work goes into the process. My favorite part was learning about the history of public speaking. Professor Newsom is very approachable and easy-going and her lectures are far from boring. She really knows her stuff. One of my favorites.
SAVE YOURSELF A HEADACHE AND DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE COURSES! It was the worst class I have ever taken online. Not only does she not respond to emails but she also takes a lifetime to grade anything! She sprung a 30 page final exam on our class with only 6 days of class left... We had heard nothing of it until she posted it on Canvas. SO awful.
This was by far the most unorganized class I have ever taken. Everything is done in groups, which sucks when some people don't pull the weight. She also allowed students to depict what your final debate grade should be. I would avoid taking this class at all costs. She also has no respect for anyone who believes in Christ. She is unprofessional.
This class was the most unorganized class I have ever been apart of. The professor lost our submitted assignments, graded based on criteria that wasn't outlined in the assignment and overall made it impossible to follow with any type of clarity let alone enjoyment. I would rather take ANY other class than this if given the opportunity.
Personally I loved her. The first four days of class were nothing but lectures which were admittedly boring, however, after that? The class was a breeze. I loved the class, I mean who else introduces herself by having us sing Mary Poppins?!
There is so much I wish I could say about Dr. V. She's literally one of the coolest professors you will ever have. You definitely have to get involved in the class independently, but there are tons of extra credit opportunities. She's hilarious and let's students govern themselves. A++ definitely take her Public Speaking class.
Newsome is a terrible teacher, she doesn't do the teaching at all. Every class she has groups of people present the material from the modules they read online. Only 1 week left in the quarter and she has yet to grade anything I have turned in. She also requires you to do a service learning project where you have to get volunteer hours.
Honestly, I had a bad feeling right off the bat with this teacher, and in the end I should have followed it. This class has been the most stressful thing I have ever experienced. She uses her students as labor for her club's quarterly events, she has the students teach the class, and she hasn't graded a single thing. Avoid her like the plague.
Prof Newsom gives very little direction for the assignments; instructions were vague and there was no feedback at all. No grades where posted until the second to last week of the quarter. There were a lot of assignments (2+week) and a required 20 hours of volunteer. It was VERY hard to find time (but doable) when you have 2 other classes and work.
The class is hard. Make sure you are on top of your assignments and try to complete them earlier than they are due. She gives great feedback but I relied heavily on extra credit to get my 4.0. She sprung a 25-30 page final on us with 6 days to turn it in. Be prepared for large assignments, but ask for help and she will definitely be there for you!
This was a small online group communications class that was conducted online. The assignments were not clear what so ever, this lead to much confusion and made it nearly impossible to work together as a group. The professor never responded to questions via email. Nothing is clear, nothing is later clarified. Would NEVER take a class from her again.
This Professor is incredibly pretentious to her core. Her group projects are haphazardly thrown together by the students and often fall flat on their face. There is very little guidance and often times requires the students to take control to make anything happen.
Great class. One of the best teachers I've ever had. Easy assignments, but you do have to go to class. It's very fun and lot's of extra credit options. And you get to write the test as a class, no way to lose.
Professor Newsom was very clear cut during each of her modules that she provided. Although there were due dates for each assignment, I was able to still learn at my own pace. The service learning project that she assigned was fun, and I really enjoyed it. Good class for freshman.
First time I ever wanted to go to every class. Thought I'd hate public speaking but she made it easy. Favorite class I've ever had.
Dr. Newsom is a great professor and does a goid job of making the class easy and relaxed. You get to choose your own pace and she makes speeches relaxing. You might have to sing, but not alone. Don't plagiarize though, she's strict on that one.
Modules were unclear, with zero communication when prompted. Apparently spiteful, after I addressed an issue with the course, and after receiving full points all quarter, I received a 2.6 with no clarity on why. Appealed my grade, it was put on hold due to a larger investigation. Be aware! I would never take a class from her again.
This was a class I was very scared to take. Dr. V was awesome and made me feel proud of myself as a speaker. I loved the class and all the activities. We get to work with each other and practice in class so that means I didn't have too much homework, which was great for dealing with my kids. Dr. V understands we have real lives. Taking her again.
I was expecting to really dislike this class, but it had turned into one of the best classes I have taken. While Dr V's lectures were extremely interesting, they were not very frequent. The major project for the course was a debate run by the students. DO NOT CHOOSE THE TAKE HOME EXAM... 20 written pages with citations!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!! I am a straight A student for my whole life, but she failed me. She does not give direct guidance on what you need to do for this class, and she will fail you if you do not meet the standard that never given to you. Her lecture is really boring too. If you want to have high GPA in this class, you don't want to take it.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. Syllabus isn't informative, and doesn't contain office hours or office location. It doesn't even state what book you'll be using for the course. She's in no way professional at all, and could care less about students. Horrible at communicating. On top of a course load, she also makes you do a volunteer project.
Dr. Newsome is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. She requires the students to run and almost teach her whole class. I went into public speaking thinking I would become better public speaker, but the only thing I learned was how to publicly humiliate people. She had the class officers decide punishments for other class members. Take Hering!
Easy class. Easy work. The most fun I've had in a class at OC and the best teacher. Learned a lot. She does make you take responsibility for your own work, and you have to be there. But it's worth it.
worst professor I have ever had! DO NOT TAKE!! She does not clearly define ANY assignment. She wont respond to emails, questions, requests for clarifications at all. Assignments are graded based on only her opinion, there are no clear directions on anything! Takes forever to grade assignments. Volunteer work assigned without adequate time to plan
Great class very straightforward. Ended up with 100+% with extra credit. The work is minimal and the grade was easy.
Dr. Newsom is highly intelligent and will challenge you to do great speeches. Class was tough, but you learn a lot. Specifics: 50 points extra credit to class officers. About 50 other ex- cre. Class can vote on doing 4 major speeches and getting rid of the Final exam. (Highly recommended you vote for that). Make sure you meet the time on speeches.
I took this class online and it started out all right but as time went on it only got worse. Can be hard to get a hold of her. She requires group projects for online students. Grades very harshly, you better follow the rubric word by word if you want to get an A. Would not recommend her.
Her assignments are very vague and confusing
Newsom's class was weird. She had students fill many of the roles that the teachers typically do for extra credit, and it felt a bit like getting thrown into a maze without a map. On work, she doesn't grade your speeches based on how well they are performed, but rather how good the argument is. And if you are within the obligatory time limit.
I loved Professor Newsome's class. She runs it in more of a forum format than most teachers. She'll have discussions on everything, respects different view points, and will work with you to make sure you succeed. She is a tough grader because she wants you to make progress and come out of the class with an ability to speak in public
too much paper work
Fun class. It's a group class so you do group work, but she gave us great projects that made sense to see how the groups worked. Doing stuff in class is her teaching style so don't just expect lectures.
In the beggining of the class, she choses class officer (they will get extra credit). Instead of the professor leads class, the officers will lead the class. There were exam lectures total about 6 or more hours. and you have to write 10 pages paper for take home exam. She would grade your speech high score though.
I took her class because i thought it would be easy elective class my last quarter before i graduated, boy was I wrong. She made an online class be mostly group work. She assigned three individual papers through out the quarter. I wrote 10 plus pages for each and strugled to get a good grade on them. She picks apart the smallest things. Dont recome
While the line between professor and student is clear, it isn't emphasized. She even gives a lot of her power to the students by having them choose other students for positions like class officers (who get extra credit). Students also vote on pretty much everything including the final (take it in class). She also discusses more than lectures.
The class material was skewed heavily toward her modules (available online), the text book was rarely referenced. There was a lot of work and several group assignments. 10 blogs/discussions & group work make it difficult to work ahead. Everything has to be in APA format. The final is 10 short-essays.
Very late with grading assignments. Had to email multiple times to put a grade in for an assignment from week two, which never was put in, effecting my GPA. Assignments were fairly straight forward. Didn't buy the book, tests are very passable without. Not very exciting, an eh class.
not very clear when giving feedback. u can message her and ask her a question and you will not always get a good reply back. great teacher in person. awful online. NITPICKY!!!
If you want to take this class to become a better speaker, don't. This is a class for people who are already decent at speaking. She uses class officers to decide everything which wastes a TON of class time. Lectures and assignments are vague and when she grades she says your answers are vague, go figure. I recommend recording her lectures.
no logic to her grading, assignment descriptions are vague and hard to understand, and she gives horrible feedback, i would not recommend taking her classes to anyone at all ever
not clear on assignment, no comments on graded work received back comparing or referring to rubric at all
I usually don't rate professors on this site but after taking Newsom's class, I had to. I have never taken a class where the professor was so blatantly rude when you ask a question or voided assignments because of the smallest things. She never gives feedback either. I strongly advise you to not take her class if you can help it. It's not worth it.
Class on canvas at noon on first day of term, Tuesday. Tons of reading and you are REQUIRED to take INTRO TO CANVAS course and turn in certificate to continue. Thursday at 4PM all assignment due dates where changed forward half a week. First paper changed from 6 days to 31 hours to complete. Instructor not responding questions. advised todrop
Has no class structure, extraordinarily unclear directions, snotty and very arrogant, vindictive, I will quit school before taking another course from her. Seventy percent of the class dropped-NEVER seen that before. God awful in every respect. RUN!
Great teacher. Easy class as long as you show up and do the work. Saw the last review and no one dropped in our class. Volunteer for extra credit and you can get a 4.0 easy.
Does not care about her students whatsoever. Lectures are held from the back of the room, mini rants every five minutes, doesn't answer emails, doesn't help students whatsoever. Victoria Newsom gives the class assignments and expects her students to figure out how to complete the assignment to her exact specifications on their own. Avoid AAC.
Newsom doesn't help you understand anything! She kept grading me badly for stuff and when I emailed her to see if she could help me understand so I wouldn't get another bad grade she just told me to look at the rubric. Like isn't YOUR JOB to help me?! Anyway, wouldn't take a class from her again. She's very unhelpful. Luckily, there's extra credit.
She posts quite a bit of reading in the weekly modules (which are not always accessible). There are weekly quizzes which you can retake for a passing grade. Assignments were graded ridiculously late, but she does not accept late work. I, along with another classmate, dropped the class. Would not recommend this instructor.
I don't know why she's permitted to teach-a prime candidate for re-assignment, as a prison guard. Horrific experience, mean-spirited, always off topic, and the entire class centers around her "accomplishments" and how stupid everyone else is. I'd like to say I learned, but that'd be a lie. Approx 40% dropped in two and half weeks and it got worse.
Easy class. Very clear. Just plan to read a lot. I saw the bad reviews here and wonder if its one student that really hated her because Ive taken several of her classes and shes very easy to talk to and ask questions and get help.
Very fun class. I learned a lot and highly recommend her classes. Ive taken most of them and shes an excellent prof.
Fun teacher. Easy work. Keep up on the readings and blogs. No tests.
The online communications class is left wing OPINION class. Communism class. My feelings matter more than facts and culture, class. Anti-religion class. You dont learn any facts besides a few definitions. You learn you, and everyone else is apparently a victim. Also you dont need your textbook to pass. This class was a joke.
If I could give her a 0 I would. Worst teacher I have ever had. Does not grade consistently and plays favorites with her students
If you participate its easy. She lets the students choose which speeches to give. She also gives lots of extra credit.
DONT get the textbook, you wont need it. Take the online version since in person is just the online work plus a ton of mandatory pop-up group work. This prof is hard to access outside class and not consistent between what she says and puts online (due dates, rules, etc). Be prepared for politics and age 21+ material. Easy pass if you do the work.
Took this class online. She is very detailed and clear about what she expects from you in class. She's easy to reach and responds very quickly. The course topics are very interesting if you're willing to learn. The only issue is the online group work. People take the class online for a reason, and forcing us in groups just makes it tough.
Pretty easy class. It's organized and makes sense. The work is not hard and the professor actually responds to emails unlike my other professors.
I had problems in several classes when eveything switched online but this class was easy to adapt to. The work was clear and easy to follow and there was a lot of extra credit that helped because i had a slow start getting used to online.
Gave me a 0 on an optional assignment, then left an entire module locked until after the assignments were already due. Seems like a nice person just difficult to work with as a student. Her written lectures were pretty good, lots of pictures and videos so it's not one giant block of text. Just wasnt worth all the trouble to me.
I took Small Group Communication, Dr. Newsom is hands off but that is to be expected with it being completely online. No meetings, you read her textbook in Canvas. Everything was Open Resource which was confusing at first. Her answers to clarification questions were confusing. But I was lucky to be in a great group.
Professor Newsome is very unclear about the assignments. Very confusing and opened communication style. The rubics are more clear than she is. A very confusing class with no clear objective on assignments till after you turn them in. The only good thing is you could redo and resubmit . I really wish I had read these reviews before I took the class.
The directions throughout this course were very unclear. This class is entirely based on working with a group to take resources from one place and move them to another and summarize them. I highly recommend that unless you need a communications course for your major that you do not take this class. If possible, find another instructor.
I earned two 98% grades in two other difficult classes this quarter, but only earned an 84% in this class. She accused me of plagiarism and sent the "plagiarized" document back to me and the part she was referring to was a very generic sentence. Plus, she wouldn't review it because she "doesn't allow corrections on plagiarized papers."
victoria was very difficult in her explanations for assignments. very unclear and most of the students did assignments wrong and she didnt bother taking note that maybe something is wrong on her part. overall a bad teacher but the prompts and class were interesting.
Most of the course being an online textbook is fine but a majority of the assignments are graded on finals week and if a submission link doesn't work, its basically too late to resubmit
I have attended this school for three years now, taking multiple honors and advanced classes, and this is the hardest class I've taken; not because of subject, but because of the professor. This professor has no business teaching, and clearly has no care for it. Do not take this class if you expect a communicative, competent professor.
I would never take a class from this professor again. I have always been a good student with good grades so I thought this class would look good on my transcript. Turns out this teacher doesn’t understand that 101 means intro class. This is not a masters class, her average scores on assignments were below 50% and this affects my gpa, I’m angry.
Shes probably one of the worst professors I have ever come across. At the beginning of the quarter I was having a hard time but she wouldnt tell me what to change to make my submissions better she told me to read the rubric. This class was harder than my biology class! The reading is so dense, doesnt even make sense! Dont chose her!
Not recommended by any means. Professor Newson seems to show no care for teaching, she in almost entirely unavailable outside of class and very adverse to answering questions during class. Answer to an emails can be expected 2-3 business months later and all assignments are graded during or after finals so don't expect feedback.
Her course is super frustrating. You can do all the assignments and get 40/40 on them but the blogs I have no gotten a single one over 24/40 or 24/30. She constantly says "add more detail, to vague" when It's a conversation assignment. Also, forced to take quizzes that don't affect go towards your grade. Would not take again. extra harsh grader.
I did not receive a single grade until almost the end of the quarter and then I didn't get the rest of my grades until the final grade was released, I had no idea how I was doing in the class, There is an extreme amount of unnecessary assignments and she doesn't let you redo things and gives late penalties even though she never grades anything.
prof. Newsom wasn't bad, but she does procrastinate A LOT with grading, which made it very hard to improve the work or speeches i did. also make sure to use visual aids. lost a lot of points to that. honestly, the late grading made it a difficult class, plus there was a lot of extra work that didn't feel necessary. there is a lot of extra cred tho.
Discussion "Blogs" were never good enough, always too vague, blogs made up 90% of the grade, classes felt more like reading through angry posts on twitter. Grades were always late or never showed up 2/10.
None of the quizzes you have to take to unlock the next module are graded. She forgot to publish an assignment for week 8 and decided to spring a video essay paired with a typed essay on the last 4 days of classes. Overall just unprofessional and unprepared.
100% do not recommend. She was incredibly harsh with grading, yet didn't offer any feedback to help you improve with later assignments. I am a good student with good grades and this was the hardest class I've ever taken. Ridiculous amounts of work and unclear rubrics and assignment descriptions. Not worth the credits, trust me
Allows resubmitting assignments so as long as you turn something when due & then look at feedback you can easily get 100%. Not a lot of assignments so working to fix things after was not that big of a deal. If she was clearer on what she wanted & spent class time talking about what we are working on instead then it would be a better experience.
While the course material is interesting, Professor Newsom's teaching style and grading can be quite frustrating. The assignments are graded harshly, with little feedback. unstuckstudy and the textbook proved helpful for preparing, but I wouldn't recommend this class.
Horrendous. Dealt with personal issues and she refused to accommodate even with the schools interference. She was horribly rude and was a terrible grader. She favored those in the film school rather than the other students leaving no room to be on her "good side". Never would take her again recommend that you don't either.
The course material is interesting but impossible to apply to assignments. Ins
Awesome! Great to work with loved the public speaking class she ran over the winter!
She is awesome to listen too! a lot of great information!
The work was only hard if you don't read the work. Victoria was Awesome when I had questions or if I did not understand the assessment. She took the time to book a time with the library to help us learn to locate and cite resources!
I went into this class having read the reviews on here worried I had signed myself up for hell. It went better than expected... I by no means am recommending this course if u aren't prepared to read about 30pgs a week however. Tbh this class solely depends on the people you get in your group, and showing up to her lectures (that she won't even do)
She is a tough grader and has zero exception for late work without penalty. Your grade for an assignment will drop by 10% every day that it is late, even if you turn it in at 12:04am. Lectures are long, grueling, and blatantly have nothing to do with the assignments. The final project is pretty fun and dependably useful though.
I took her CMST 101 class and her CMST 263 class at the same time. Probably one of the harshest quarters for me. Go above and beyond to receive full credit on blog posts as well as activities. For a communications teacher, the way she phrases assignments makes no sense, and you'll often reread everything to understand what she is asking.
All of these bad reviews are true. Don't take her class. She was the harshest grader, terrible at communicating and gave unclear assignments. Expect no responses to emails and for your assignments to be left ungraded until the end of the quarter.
Horrible teacher do not take this class
Everyone is right. While I did get a B for a communications professor shes not very good at communicating. she responded to 1 out of 6 of my e mails thought the quarter. She graded my draft super close to the deadline give me barely any time to fix it and never gave me any feedback ever even when I asked for it don't rely on her to help you.
Professor Newsom does not grade in a timely manner. Which does not allow students to know their mistakes and correct them before the end of the quarter. As it stands I still have more than 6 assignments that still need to be graded. Also, assignments lack examples and detail of what she is looking for the activity assignments.
