Very interesting professor...really wants you to think and come to your own conclusions (so if you just want a mindless A this is not the prof for you...although it isn't too hard to get an A by thinking)...her Brit accent is the bomb too!!!
She's a great teaching. Definitely a benefit if you were to take this class. She gets you to think and to form your own opinion instead of spitting back information. Class is semi easy.
Funny, engaging, great accent! Passionate and interesting lecturer.
loved it, you gotta take it at Berkeley. really makes you compassionate for your own and other races

class is overall easy. but its EXTREMELY difficult to listen to her lectures. she gets to into it and goes to fast. BUT, one plus is that she is smoking hot. when she wears a skirt...MMM MMMM...GOD DAMN. shes HOT. i want that accent.
I strongly recommend NOT taking this class. This woman is very interested in the subject, but she does NOT know what she's doing. She has no idea how to lecture. You can never take notes from her, and then she tests you on pure lecture notes. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Robinson is pretty damn hot! She also lectures well.
She's helpful sure. But lectures are too confusing. Class is fun, but just steer clear of it if you want to protect your GPA. She needs to learn how to be clear, shes a raving lunatic up there.
she's got plenty to say which is nice but sometimes a little overwhelming. The lectures are intense and surely get you to think outside of the box
Lectures ARE a bit confusing, I must admit, but the exams only test you on the facts in the lecture. Just because you get lost in her talks during class doesn't mean you can't get an A in the class. But, yes, a little more order would be nice.
Dr. Robinson is a pretty sweet teacher. There is almost no order whatsoever to lectures, but it's still easy to follow. She also has all lecture notes posted online. Exams were easy- she gives you the questions before hand. Take it, but don't let her think for you.
She's a fabulous professor. very passionate about what she teaches. lectures, as mentioned, can be a bit all over the place. 'cause once she just gets going on something...man. but still an awesome class.
Your grade will totally depend on your GSI, she's a very passionate teacher, however her lectures are EXTREMELY sporadic. A couple of her GSI's are biased to your writing, while others great.
She has a British accent, she's automatically cool. I loved this class and she was awesome. Cheers to Robinson!
I want Robinson to have my baby.
Dr. Robinson is incredibly HOT!! I could just sit there watching her lecture for days...
This is one of those classes you absolutely need to take no matter what.
Robinson is VERY unclear. She rambles a lot, talks too fast. LUCKILY, the grading is done by GSIs, and Robinson's review sheets are helpful. All in all, the class isn't that bad...it is definitely worth taking, just for the information.
great teacher. she keeps you focused. i loved her british accent. :)
I loved this class. Since taking it I want to minor in Ethnic Studies.

She continues to be influential to her students beyond her class. She is the best!
She's a really cool teacher, she'll really open your mind with her Ethnic Studies courses. Plus she has a cool accent, is really nice, will remember your name always, and is easy on due dates and grading.
Prof. Robinson knows a lot, but she does not present the information in a clear or concise manner. She rambles in her lectures, goes off on tangents, and is very hard to follow overall. The content of this class is important, but there is WAY too much of it and the prof. does not clearly state / make known the main points.

Very awesome and cool.
love the voice, love how she stared the class off with music, HATED my GSI! but good class
Prof. Robinson is the best professor I have had so far. She is very enthusiastic and her lectures are engaging. The tests are pretty easy and a fair amount of reading. Plus, a very cool British accent.
The class itself is really interesting. It can be hard to understand what she's saying though. That's partly because of her accent and partly because she goes off talking about other subjects so you never know what specifically to take notes on. Her tests aren't that bad. do all the reading though. it helps. overall she is a really nice person.
She is such an awesome professor. She uses different things to teach the class, whether it be music, visual evidence or guest speakers. it's a great class to introduce one to ethnic studies and awareness to the world.
this class definitely pushes you to challenge the status quo. her lectures are a bit unorthodox and in the beginning, you may find it difficult to follow. but let's just say i never felt bored or sleepy and it was an 8 am class. very engaging and creative methods of presentation. grading depends mostly on your GSI.
Truly eye-opening. Her lectures are simultaneously fun, interactive, thought-provoking, deep. I really enjoyed the use of alternative media, and not standard lecturing. She is obviously passionate, making the subject even more interesting. Her summaries and slides are very helpful. The only trouble was trying to stay awake >.<
I thought that her lectures were awesome, but the sections were absolutely pointless, and the assignments were totally unstructured. One thing that I wished for was for the whole course being more organized and structured. A lot of the reading was pointless and I got through the entire class reading a total of 9 articles out of the countless in the
The hottest female professor in Berkeley. She's English. Plus she actually knows what she's talking about and she legitimately cares about her students. What's not to love here?
BEWARE: this dept is really militant and biased against White people (I'm not white, but I was shocked by how racially charged this class was). To an unfair degree! Also, the GSIs control your grading, and they can be very uneven across sections, so it's a crap shoot. Also, don't turn ANYTHING in late because your grade will be TOTALLY penalized.
Prof. Robinson is GREAT! don't be intimidated about the material and reader. she truly just wants you to learn so the grading of her class isn't tough. She's a really down to earth professor and willing to help and talk to her students about anything. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. my gsi was tight. and material to me was eye opening.
She's a great lecturer, but it's hard to wrap your head around this class the first couple of weeks. It's important to know what to expect from an AC course.Just let the lectures sink in, keep up with the MANY reading(articles), and grasp onto conceptual frameworks. This class isn't about memorization. You may not appreciate this class until the end
Sure she talks fast and kinds of goes in circles, but after taking this class, I have never seen the world the same again. It is truly eye opening - an amazing experience. Don't be afraid because the material seems hard - she will give you a very good review. She's very nice, very pretty, and very creative. The GSI is really funny!
Amazing. The material takes a bit to sink in and really start to make sense but totally worth it.
She is really really attractive and interesting. She knows what she is talking about, even though she talks alot and sometimes its hard to keep up. the tests aren't too bad. She is funny and tries to make lectures fun and light. Stay away from Tuncap as your GSI... he is completely insane.
She's British, 6 feet tall, and she's brilliant. Sometimes what she says goes a little over you head though, but don't be afraid to ask, cuz so is everyone else...
She's a brilliant professor, but she talks a mile a minute and throws out terminology that takes a while to wrap your head around. It can start off intimidating but the course material is very interesting and important for your awareness. Down to earth and funny. She has a british accent, is very tall, and knows so very much. Do the readings!
She is a great professor who is able to captivate your attention for the whole class and brings up some controversial and interesting topics; being 6ft tall and having a British accent also helps. She speaks a mile a minute and uses words I cannot even understand, however if you get even just a quarter of the class you will do fine.
Wonderful class, very interesting eye opening class, but you have to pay attention and keep up with the readings. I do agree that she does go quite fast, but its just all the material that she is tryin to cover. Her exams are not bad at all just need to know alot, pay attention tot her lectures and you will do fine. Highly recommend her!
There is a LOT of material to cover in this class, so her lectres move quickly. She often uses phrases that fly way over your head during lecture, but it eventually sinks in a month later. interesting class. she has a way of making you care about ethnic studies. Section was useless, but she is VERY helpful and personable. go to her Office Hours!
A MUST for ALL students. Content is fascinating. Lectures are a little difficult to follow and a bit unorganized, but very interesting. Do the readings, construct opinions in your tests and papers, and you'll get the A. Don't be afraid of the radical. Oh, and the prof is sooooooooooo hot. She can do anything she wants with me.
This class is well worth your while. The material is complicated so it is difficult to explain crystal clear but it is an essential class for a berkeley education. Dr. Robinson is very helpful and excited and her lectures are fun and interesting.
The class was pretty easy and you didn't have to read a great deal of the reader in order to do well. I didn't like the content of the class, though, because it was biased and simplified things too much down to race. I would prefer to take a more objective class in the future.
Robinson is an incredible woman. This class is most definitely one of the best at Berkeley! Do the reading (SHARE IT WITH A STUDY GROUP!... this worked beautifully!). For essays, don't bs it- say what you think, even if its contradictory to her own beliefs. She'd rather see that you can think- so make an argument and back it up, you'll earn an A.
Very disorganized professor. Couldn't keep up with syllabus. Course requires a very fat, expensive, useless reader. She's mostly incomprehensible and she gets pretty frustrated with her students by the end of the semester. She's like a broken record and fills up most of class w/ film clips. Course was overall very shallow and annoying.
This is the wrost professor I 've ever taken it was very difficult to take notes not because of her accent but because she was so disorganized. The syllabus was changed at least three times. Overrall, your grade depends on your GSI. I do not recommend this class !
Took her at Fall extension (FPF). Very intriguing lectures, everything she talks about seems to be a 'feedback loop'! She is very approachable even outside of office hours. The GSI will be the sole grader - Mike Tuncap is the best! We use the reader, usually you can use the older version but she'll add a couple new articles in. Form a study Group!
The most amazing professor Ive ever had, by far my favorite on campus. She can be a bit wordy, but in the end its wort it---shes always there for her students and is very passionate...keeps me awake :-)
THe most amazing professor at Cal. Treats her students with respect and is there to help them with whatever comes up. Great class. very very passionate prof! THIS IS A CLASS YOU HAVE TO TAKE BEFORE GRADUATING! highly recommended!
Professor Robinson is so good! There's a lot of reading but she makes it clear in lecture which ones are the most important. Actually watch the video clips (don't fall asleep) because they're relevant for sure. She's easy to talk to. Yeah, her lectures are disorganized but that's really the only bad thing about her. Work hard & an A is guaranteed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! V.R. might be a great person but she is a terrible teacher. She decided to 'give back' to the community and opened the doors to hordes of guest lecturers who spoke about completely off-topic material. She only lectured a handful of times. The syllabi changed 4 times, due dates too. Everything about the class was erratic.
This proffesor is one of the most helpful people at Cal. I say people, because she helped in many way than just her duties as my proffesor. She definitely makes you want to learn the material and entices you to want to actually want to be in a discussion w the material. I still am in contact with her after graduating from Cal last year in May 07
Terrible professor. Very hypocritical and biased. As long as you write about something she says you'll do fine so you don't come up with any unique ideas. If your ideas don't fit her she wont like it. Hard to keep up with the reading. If you're in the sciences you probably wont like the class
Overall--good professor. The visual media she showed us was great and engaging. The readings were mostly boring and unnecessary, although you should read the important ones she points out during class. This class really depends on the GSI too- mine sucked, but the class itself wasn't too bad. Take this class if you want another POV of US hist. B+
Maybe a little overrated, but still a great teacher. She's very knowledgeable and passionate. She wants to help students. Two downsides: she tries to fit so much into one course that it's hard to keep it under control, and she throws out many terms without explaining them.
Amazing professor! Attending class is a must if you want an A. Go to her office hours, she's very friendly and breaks down concepts more slowly during that time.

This was the most horrible class I have ever taken. The GSI was horrible and basically created his own rubrics that he sent around the night before the due date. This class wasn't even interesting. It was a class full of extremely dubious rhetoric, which transcended the norm...even for Berkeley. Avoid at all costs. Seriously.
She does NOT make any sense but she doesn't seem to know that. Also GSI is not helpful and unprofessional. Basically, both of them do not know how to articulate their ideas.
The worst class I've ever taken. Her agenda is militant & radical & flies in the face of truth & reason. She made up terminology as she went. The GSI was the most vile, unprofessional person I've ever met, yet she defended him. Didn't do a single one of the (excessive) readings, & still got an A. An embarassment to Cal & soc. sciences in general.
Professor is extremely wordy. you would NOT be able to understand her. Her writing is wordy too. Lectures are not helpful but then readings are not relevant either. basically, you don't learn anything in this class but just get frustrated. GSI is very unprofessional and does not seem to be that intelligent either. waste of time, money and effort.
so a lot of people seem to be complaining but my experience with this prof was incredible. she is a prof that u can be friends with. IVe taken two classes with her now, its not the easiest--yes it requires some reading and attending lectures--go figure, but it was eye opening for me. she is the most approachable prof ive had at Cal A+
Great Class! Learn so much about the history and origin or race issues and history. Focuses on variety of races and problems affecting everyone! Great lecturer and very intelligent! Highly recommended
She is the best professor I've had in my time at Berkeley. Extremely helpful, go to office hours and she'll actually be your friend + she is really passionate about the subject. This class is eye-opening and I recommend it to all students.
Professor Robinson would have to beone of the most intelligent, passionate, and friendliest professor I have ever met. She may talk too fast at times, but if you go to lecture and pay attention to what she emphasizes, the class is very easy. Read what she tells you to and ask questions. The visuals were a great, engaging addition to the class. A+
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Professor Robinson talks a ton and says nothing. The class could be great if she did not try to fit so much into such a limited amount of time. There is a fine difference between a professor encouraging independent thought and just being incomprehensible, she is the latter. Take another course to fulfill your AC req!
Only take this class if A. your world revolves around Ethnic Studies, and/or B. if you are very good at filtering through tons of B.S. to find what you need for your assignments. Professor is very passionate.
Go to the first and second day of class and if it seems like you like the style of the class then take it, do your reading, and get an A. But if the style of the professor does not appeal to you then drop. Professor Robinson is very in to her subject and knows a lot, she is a great person.
very passionate professor. incredibly knowledgeable, approachable. The class is all over the place. if you depend on a very structured academic approach don't take this class. if you want to be inspired and engage actively with the material then highly recommended
Very good professor, lots of material to read and learn, graded assignments are easy, midterm and final are challenging, a great class to open your eyes to ethnic studies and our society.
Enlightening.
very biased, great if you're super liberal, personally i think it made me more conservative
The class was amazing! The professor is very insightful and opens your eyes to a new way of thinking. I definitely loved her lectures. Go to her office hours. It helps. Lots of reading but it's incredibly interesting. I'd take this class again if I could.
Do not take this class if you have no interest in subject. Bounces all over the place with no structure and very confusing vocab. People who do well often seem like Ethnic Studies majors. So avoid this class and seek AC somewhere else. Literally made me, a staunch Democrat, become more conservative.
Interesting that someone below felt that way too. Couldn't express my opinion. Pretty ironic for a class about oppression. With professor she just didn't provide another opinion, but didn't silence people who mentioned other sides. GSI definitely didn't provide alternate opinions either, and made you feel demeaned if you provided one.
It was a very interesting class with a passionate, nice, yet slightly intimidating professor. The lectures were really complicated and sometimes hard to follow because she goes through material really fast. Overall, I'm glad I took it, but wouldn't have taken it for a letter grade. There is a ton of reading but the midterms were manageable.
This class was amazing!! The reason why I came to CAL. She made students aware of so many topics that are not fully addressed in other classes. She had a lot of information to share and enjoyed discussions with students. The readings were very useful and had helped explore issues in contemporary USA.
Victoria was an amazing professor in that she seriously cares about your success in her class and she brings amazing cultural insight to your studies. She is easy to understand (assuming your Spanish is up to par for the class) and enjoyable to listen to. That being said, I surprisingly felt like I was graded unfairly on many assignments.
An amazing class. Changed my perspective on education through the topics discussed and how they were taught. There are many readings, but you can get by without reading all of them if you attend the lecture. However, they add to the class, and I suggest that you try to read as many as possible. Lectures were fast-paced and interesting.
Man she was so amazing. Her lectures were so eye-opening and she had this great personality that really drove the class. My sections were a little dry but would definitely recommend taking her just to learn about the material. Super relaxed on grading, got an easy A. Lots of reading though you never really get tested on it.
This was one of the best classes I've ever taken at Cal, and Victoria definitely made it that way. It was very eye-opening. She's a great lecturer, and the class doesn't have that many assignments. There's lots of reading, but I didn't do a lot of it and still got an A. Go to her office hours and talk in class if you can, she's very nice.
One of my favorite professors at Cal. Her class was incredibly impactful and meaningful. She has an assignment that involves community engagement that is really rewarding.
She relies on a ridiculous amount of readings which she herself is unable to justify. When the TAs and all of the students brought to her attention that the amount of reading wasn't condusive to our learning she merely shrugged and said "oh well". She is a good person but this class needs a complete restructuring, the lectures are pointless
One of the best classes I have taken at Cal. She is genuinely interested in each of her students and understands the struggle of being at Cal. She is definitely very influential and wants the best for her students and ensures that each of her students walks out of the classroom well-informed and woke. Would take her class again 12/10
Pros: engaging guest speakers, extra credit opportunities, very knowledgeable professor and GSIs, warned us about potential pop quizzes a few days beforehand Cons: way too much reading (didn't do a majority of it but I still got an A lmao), very radical point of view, not a lot of structure, long wait for grades
Dr. Robinson was amazing and very accessible and supportive in office hours. She brought in guests that could speak to the curriculum in class. I'm so glad I took her class and will be taking others. There aren't enough professors like her at Cal. She is truly a gem. I feel lucky to have taken a class with her. I learned a lot!
Hands down one of the best and most eye opening classes I've taken at Cal. There is a midterm, a final, a couple of "keyword" assignments (basically a 2-3 page paper), and a lot of readings. I barely did the readings, did the study guide, didnt do any extra credit and still got an A- The midterm was open notes.
Professor Robinson is one of the bets professors I've had at Berkeley. Her lectures are really informational (sometimes too much to take in) but as long as you get the main idea and retain some details, the assignments should be easy. She is extremely understanding and helpful. Hilarious, I would definitely take her again if I could!
Victoria is literally one of the best professors I have ever had in my entire life. She is a brilliant, amazing professor, she's super understanding and she is flat out hilarious. One of the best classes I have ever taken. Life-changing (not exaggerating).
GO. TO. HER. OFFICE. HOURS. She is absolutely brilliant and shares a lot of knowledge with students. Very friendly and approachable. Super accommodating with deadlines. The class was super interesting and engaging. Got to design our own midterm/final exam. She is a true gem! PLEASE TAKE HER EVEN IF ITS FOR FUN!!!
Victoria was an amazing teacher. She obviously has done her work and is super knowledgeable and intelligent. I also really enjoyed the guest lecturers she brought into the class, I think it added a lot to the course. I think everyone at Berkeley should take this class!
Excellent professor. Her class on prison abolition is very enlightening. However, there were many readings and the concepts were sometimes difficult to understand.
Extremely thoughtful, knowledgeable professor. Consistently brings energy, love, and determination to lectures, and is incredibly connected to a network of mostly local bay area orgs and people, which you gain exposure to almost every week. Reading is heavy, but out of necessity, and always grows upon itself in a 'world-building' manner.
I loved Victoria Robinson. I took this course as an AC requirement and it was the easiest class in my entire time at Berkeley. She is very caring, very passionate about her teaching, and very fun. I did not attend any lectures or discussions and still got an A.
One of the most life-changing classes I have taken or will ever take. I took this course, which changed my mindset greatly on so many things and introduced me to so much more, along with Political Economy 101, and this formed actually new Marxist form of thinking. The GSI David was incredible, so supportive and inspiring. Loved them both.
Victoria was absolutely so inspirational even as a non Ethnic Studies major. There is one assignment per week and the readings are interesting. She grades on labor, is incredibly empathetic, and rejects traditional academic competitiveness. Midterm and final are incredibly easy and fun! Section participation is important
I would highly recommend any class taught by Professor Robinson. She is passionate, incredibly intelligent, and the kindest professor I have ever met at UC Berkeley. Her classes will open your mind to things you never knew were going on in your own backyard. Engage in the class and you will be so rewarded. She also knows so many awesome people.
Professor Robinson's class was insightful and eye-opening. While the concepts were sometimes challenging, the assignments and discussions were rewarding. I found platforms like unstuck study and ChatGPT helpful for study prep. Overall, a worthwhile experience.
I originally took this course to fulfill an AC requirement, but it turned out to be incredibly inspiring. The professor and gsi were both extremely helpful and understanding. While the final exam was a bit challenging due to the limited time, it was still manageable with preparation.
Amazing lecturer, very kind, very engaging, and very passionate. The class is pretty reading heavy, but she does a great job at breaking it up by assigning videos or podcasts as much as reasonably possible. I loved this class and the professor and highly recommend it if you have the time to dedicate to some reading!
Tons of guest speakers and has very engaging lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory, but recommend going to every class as there's in class assignments, attending makes it easier to understand the whole course as a whole. Very understanding/accommodating. GSIs are VERY HELPFUL, unpacking readings, summarizing. Final+Midterm effort&understanding based
MY ABSOLUTE GOAT. Highly passionate, kind, and intelligent professor with incredibly engaging lectures and material. She is so empathetic and inspirational, so participate in class and VISIT HER OFFICE HOURS. Lecture attendance is not mandatory (though I'd highly encouraged you go), and the midterm and final and easy and fun + graded on effort.
