Prof. Shinbrot is a very caring woman. First day of class makes the course sound extremely difficult, but its not. Lots of reading but you can easily get by with spark notes. Got class adn take good notes and you'll be fine. Speak up to voice ur opinion once or twice, she loves it.
her classes take hard work but her lectures are really interesting. if u actually want to learn about the subject, you will in her class. highly recommend
Very passionate professor, although be prepared for lots of writing! Still, class was not as difficult as she makes it out to be.
Interesting subject. When she likes what she is teaching, she is awesome, but you can tell when she doesn't like it. No religious debates either!
You have to do A LOT OF READING and you wont be get away with skimming or cliff notes cause she tests you on specific passages and their meangings. BUT if you show up to class and pay attention you will know just from class discussions what the passages mean, cause she hits you over the head with it! She's a challenging teacher but her classes are worth it if you actually want to learn something.
Man, I think Shinbrot and I are arch-enemies. She can be soo boring. I have drifted off the sleep in her classes before, and that pisses her off a lot. This is the kind of class you have to strictly regergitate information--no thinking for yourself. And if a student does something she doesn't like, she will make a scence out of it in front of the whole class, which I think is not professional.
One of the top professors at Sac State. Challenging but worth your time. Passionate and knowledgeable. Funny too. A lot of reading but the texts are always interesting. Worth taking if you want to learn something.
She is a wonderful teacher! I am honored to have been her student twice and hopefully again in the future. Today's college atmosphere is one where everyone wants to do things easily. I think Professor Shinbrot's classes are a hint of what education should and is supposed to be. She challenges her students and expects alot of them...glad she's here.
She kept it interesting and always had a new approach to teaching the same thing.
She is one of a kind, topics are somewhat hard, a lot of information, but she makes going to class worth it. Just attend class and do the reading and you will learn much. Also she has a wonderful sense of humor.
Really interesting stuff to begin with, and she is really fired up about what she teaches so that was contagious.Really tough grader but it works because you just have to know your stuff, she's not unfair. She can be a little intimidating in discussions, having to say things exactly right, but she does have days when she goes a little easier.
At first she scared the hell out of me. But as time went on, I came to admire how incredibly smart she is & her quirky sense of humor. Her classes are really challenging, but they do make you grow. Which is pretty much what college is about.
Oh, Professor Shinbrot. When I first started her class, she seriously scared the crap out me. She started off with this massive list of expectations, but after staying in the class I realized she was right to expect a lot out of her students. The only way to do well is to come to class and do the reading. She is tough, but KNOWS HER STUFF!!!!!
Shinbrot is very passionate about her lectures and loves teaching! She does have high expectations of her students and takes their reactions almost personally. However, she is a great teacher overall, and I would take again.
From the first day Professor wowed me. She is probably the most intelegent and well spoken teacher I've ever had, and she's young too. She is nice, just pay attention and answer her questions when she asks them or it ticks her off. Only take her if your ready to learn something.
She is a very good teacher! Do your readings, attend lectures, and study you will not have any problems with this class. DO NOT text message during class, come in late all the time, or leave your cell phone on; she gets very offended by these things, but you are in college now and you wouldn't do these things at work! Great teacher!!
Shinbrot at first seemed prejudice.Do not go in her class not participating, texting, or sleeping. This woman will bust you out. Try to get passionate about the subject. Make sure you read the texf for yourself because you will be tested on it. She seems very extreme and hard, but she is not, You will not pass this class being lazy,
Classical Mythology -- I have to say this is my hardest class ever! Talking about short essay exams (analytical style), NO SCANTRON you need to know the passages of each story and why it is important. Don't get me wrong she is a good teacher and very passionate about her subject, but her exams are tough...lots of reading..did i say LOTS of reading!
I loved this class! Shinbrot was funny, insightful and very well spoken! Don?t think it?s easy though. Do the reading! Be prepared to write on the exams and actually analyze the text. You will be required to use your brain to get an A. No cells. No computers. She will kick you out.
She is a really really good professor. She knows her information and has a wicked sense of humor. Be prepared to actually DO the reading. Her class is a bit difficult but she was a wonderful personality. No scantrons only the green book. essay at end of sem. be active in class she'll like you better.
This prof is a nutter, but in a scholarly way. You do have to do all the readings but can get by with Cliffs/Sparks Notes. Never have your cell phone out- she hate hate hates that. She knows her stuff. But she is mad as a hatter.
Very passionate about what she teaches. She loves 19th century. Her interest for the class subject keeps you alive
Worst class ive taken, she has a midterm and a final..NO study guide for either.Shes crazy and shows up late to class almost everyday but freaks out when students come in late. Calls people out for yawning dont ever look bored in her class!
Prof. Shinbrot is an extremely passionate teacher who wants you to love and appreciate what the 19th century has to offer. Not ideal for non-HRS majors. She makes you think, and lots of ppl apparently have a hard time doing so. She sets high expectations, so you have to be willing to do the work. If you pay attention & work hard, she'll reward you.
Well, she was a bit unorganized teaching our class, but she's obsessed with the readings and, in the end, that's all that mattered. You get two tests and two reports to prove your worth. If your confident in your essay-writing, then you should be fine.
Condensed, summer classical mythology. Lots of reading, but could get by if you read the Cliff notes. Attendance is critical as the passages & their meanings are the back bone to the tests. Only two exams, mid-term / final, & both were challenging. No scantron, all free-form answering, & even one essay on the final. Not super hard, but challenging.
Take this class in summer, it will be much easier. Professor assigns TONS of reading, I would suggest actually doing the work and using cliff notes as a supplement. Take good notes, if it sounds important to her in class then it will be on the exam. All blue book about significance, passage recognition, etc. Ended with a A- and im a CRJ major.
Shinbrot is a tough teacher, but it's worth taking her. You learn a lot, and all the readings, notes, and essays really do turn you into a better reader and writer. This class was only for majors, but I would definitely take Shinbrot again.
This is really a hard teacher. And,she is very negative. She hates teaching and she lets you know it. She is very insightful, but is an elitest. She only responds to the intellectual students. She is extremely disrespectful to students, but demands respect. If you like being emotional torqued every day, she is for you.
Brilliant professor, most likely my favorite in the entire humanities department. Yes the rumors are true, she is tough but she knows her stuff. She has very clear expectations and makes them known especially with writing. If you have a genuine interest in the humanities and you are ready to learn, you will love this class.
I have read the comments. And, I tell you the real kids quit this class and the excellent comments you are reading are from her favorite students. This lady is a freak. I got a good grade in the class but only 20 of us were left in the class. So, go figure why so many quit.
She is an incredible professor. She is a fantastic professor in every way. Her systematic manner of engaging the couse material, her reading selection, her excellent sense of humor, her feed back on papers, and her overwhelming knowledge make her undoubtedly the best professor I've ever had. Shinbrot is the best professor just...EVER!!!
She is a really wonderful professor but I will note its important to be engaged in the class & you should have PRIOR interest in the topic to really comprehend the lessons. its important to be speak up in the class so sit in the front and don't sleep !!! and do the readings overall if ur a REAL and PREPARD college student you'll be fine.
I like her, she's an intelligent woman and treats you like a college student. She likes students who are passionate and wants students to be involved, study do your reading and participate in class you'll get the grade.
Must read the books and study very hard for the tests and quizzes. Reading and attendance is key for passing it. Super hard tests if you don't study or read a week or two prior.
Interesting topic; however, her class will put you to sleep. Attendance is mandatory. Sleeping and use of cellphones will lead getting kicked out of class. She requires you bring books to class and makes a fuss about it if you don't. I didn't read any of the texts she assigned us and i got A's on exams, but failed pop quizzes. TAKE GOOD NOTES!!!!!!
I actually really liked her class. Many people say that she is boring, but she can be funny and I have a general interest in the subject to begin with so yeah. Pay attention, do the readings and you will be fine. She explains clearly what the readings mean in the lectures. You're in college, don't expect it to be easy. I learned a lot in this class
She is brilliant and passionate about what she teaches. She expects students to care about their education and be respectful in class, yes we CAN live without cell phones for an hour. If you do the reading and show up you should do great, she is very clear and doesn't try to trick you into choosing the wrong answer.
Very intelligent women. What you get out of this class reflects the work you put in. If you're going to waste your tuition by ignoring what your professor says and goofing off then thats your problem. She's definitely one of the better professors I've had, wish i could take more classes w/ her
Overall, she is an interesting professor with a lot of information to offer from her expertise. Her class is completely useless for my major, but it doesn't hurt to have her class. However, be prepared to read daily and show up to every lecture if you choose professor.
Overall, a great professor who can get passionate about what she teaches. A good trait, because she places a heavy emphasis on reading the textbooks and novels in her class and gives numerous quizzes and tests to ensure that you know the material.
Prof. Vicotoria Shinbrot is a very difficult teacher and she lets you know that you will not be receiving an easy "A" in her class. Obviously, if you have not taken any humanities classes prior to her, you will be lost. And, if you are not an HRS major this class is not for you. I am not a HRS major and I was not a fan of prof Shinbrot.
Awful. There were 15 of us left by the 4th lecture. She scared students away and does not make students feel capable of learning and doing well. Do not leave class or she will call you out. Rude and unsympathetic. I am a great student and this is by far one of the worst professors I've ever had. Cuts you down, is not inspiring students to do well.
Professor Shinbrot is a difficult professor. She assigns readings every class and has regular reading quizzes. There's 2 papers, she is a hard grader, a midterm, relatively easy if you know the stuff, and a final, which is similar to the midterm. Difficult class but totally doable. If you don't want to work hard, then don't take this professor.
I am taking this course in a Winter Session, so I thought I knew what I was in for, I am 2 days away from the final and she sends out an E-mail stating that the Final is going to be a little larger than she had claimed before... Thanks for the heads up. Study Everything.. she tests off of her thoughts, not Homer's. Can you say Elite'ist..
She is a great professor, however, she is a tough grader. She is really enthusiastic about her work and can teach you a lot of things if you pay attention. It won't be an easy A though, you will have to put in work studying and doing the readings. If you are lost or confused she is available to answer it even if you think its stupid. Tough subject
Shinbrot is the most passionate professor I've had. She made me genuinely interested in the content and I really enjoyed her lectures. However, this is a difficult class. Read all the readings and novels she assigns to pass the quizzes. Her exam content is 100% from lectures so if you skip them/ don't pay attention, you won't pass.
She is a very passionate teacher but you will get bored, so don't yawn, done laugh, don't use electronics or you will be yelled at. Two huge midterms and a Final with no study guide and no PowerPoints to help. A ton of readings throughout the semester and five books to read. So be very organized and start drinking coffee!
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT SLEEP IN HER CLASS. She hates that and texting as well. Even a yawn and she will call you out. At times I was afraid of her but if you follow her rules, you'll be fine. There is a lot of reading , so be prepared to read everyday. She is VERY passionate about the subject and knows a lot.
worst prof. I've taken yet. she's very rude and calls people out for yawning... like really? the lectures are boring, no powerpoints, pop quizzes when she feels like so carry scantrons at all times. READ the readings. They will save you. all exams are on lectures and readings. tbh. I was lost most of the time during her lectures.
You will learn more in one day in her class than you will in any others. She is passionate and brilliant
Took her for HRS 11 online class. Gives out reading quizzes about texts that can be difficult to understand. The timing she gives for the reading quizzes (5 minutes) makes it almost impossible to read the questions carefully. I always felt rushed when doing them. Also has discussions almost every week, which are easy to do. 2 midterms and 1 final
This by far was the worst professor I have ever encountered. She made me hate coming to class. I was personally targeted by this professor in front of the class DURING A TEST. This was completely unprofessional. 0 out of 10 recommend. If there is any other possible class you can take to fill your GE, TAKE THAT ONE INSTEAD !!!
The worst professor I have ever had. So unprofessional. Thinks her students are disrespectful cause we leave to use the restroom. I to my class it was a hard class to teach, due to her students. She will call people out for small things like laying back with arms crossed listening (Me). Only respects students who are into the subject like her.
I honestly gave her a chance despite what others said. She will be angry with you if you have your cellphone out or if you leave to the restroom. Also, no laptops are allowed either, so any tech users who take notes online, avoid this class. If she catches you sleeping, it's over for you.
I hate it! I am taking this online. The exams do not open until 10 PM, who starts a test at 10 at night? 25 questions only 30 mins to complete, leaving no time to think about the answers. Cannot skip questions and come back and cannot change your answer once you click next. If this was in person I would be able to skip things and change answers.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I EVER HAVE!!! HAVE A LOT LIKE A LOT OF QUIZZES THAT IS ONLY 5 QUESTIONS BUT WORTH 10 POINTS. The questions are unclear and the EXAM ARE THE WORSE!!! The study guides she will give out never even help. Also, after you finish taking the quiz, she never shows you the answers or which question you miss. I REPEAT!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS
I have no opinion in the professor herself. This class was online and I didnt watch a single lecture the entire semester. I dont even know what the professor looks like. I am writing this review to say that we had quizzes every week and a handful of discussion questions. We had 3 exams. I didnt buy the textbook and managed to pass the class.
This class does not meet in zoom, all the lectures are prerecorded on canvas. There are readings from the textbook and short stories, make sure to read them or else you will not get a passing grade. She replies to emails quick and if you missed one or two discussions she will allow you to sent her your comment for credit. She cares about her class!
the lectures are too much that I stop watching them. Too many quizzes that if you miss 1 or 2 points on it, it can DROP DOWN YOUR GRADE terrible. 50 questions only 40 mins to complete, leaving no time to think about the answers during some exams. Like what other people say, don't take this professor....
Professor Shinbrot's recorded lectures were really interesting. She knows what she is talking about and I always looked forward to listening to the lectures. Since class was online this semester, reading the lectures and following along in the book was all you really needed to do to get a good grade! Not a super tough grader either.
By far my favorite teacher. The lectures gave all the information needed for tests, quizzes, and discussion posts. There is a weekly discussion post and quiz. There were 3-4 tests. There also wasnt any homework. If you watch and takes notes on every lecture you will get an A+. She really knows her stuff and makes confusing concepts easy to learn.
Asynchronous summer class. If you watch the lectures and take notes you'll pass the class with no problem. There was 5 discussions which were pretty straight forward. 3 exams, again just pay attention to the lectures the tests are based on them. 1 essay at the end of the term, only 2 to 4 pages, which you can do the night before and still get an A
Interesting class and professor. It's only hard if you don't listen to the lectures or do the readings. Her lectures are really inspiring and she's just a very kind person.
I'm not sure why people have complained about Dr. Shinbrot. She's a gem in the Humanities department! You can tell right away how passionate she is about what she's teaching. She loves to discuss your midterm answers if you attend office hours. She's teaching adults and expects you to be one. Don't practice childish behavior. It's called respect.
Professor Shinbrot gives a lot of helpful feedback. She's obviously very passionate about Humanities and is a good video lecturer. There's a significant amount of reading and you'll get along great if you do it.
She was really nice for an online course, but she was so bent on what she wanted and would always make her tests somewhat difficult. If you do the readings and listen to the long lectures, you can be fine, but it was hard focusing on this class. Wouldn't take her again :(
Super nice and all, but expects so much. Makes discussions due at 3PM (??) and quizzes/hw by 10PM at night. Doesn't allow you to edit your discussions after posted, and assigns a lot of reading. Will not take her again.
Dr. Shinbrot is extremely knowledgeable and is very passionate about the materials. Show up to class, pay attention and you will do great. She is very straight forward and gives good feedback.
she is sweet but expects so much. she is full of her self. she may be passionate about her stuff but she is super disrespectful. do not take her. consider taking different professor if you can.
I loved this class. The lectures were great and not boring. She does a great job of explaining ideas and connecting concepts. Her tests are not hard if you attend all of the lectures. She lectures on the readings which was a BIG help in understanding the material. I loved this class.
Professor Shinbrot's course is organized on Canvas and her syllabus is easy to follow and understand. What I loved is that she is passionate about her topics which I feel is the best way to learn since one can grasp the material better. Now, this is an upper division course, so like most upper division courses be prepared to read. I loved this clas
I took Prof Shinbrot in an upper division course and a lower division course and the readings are accordingly. This was an online course so the lectures are a must, and I say this because by listening to the lectures and doing the readings, I was able to get a good grade. You can tell Prof loves her topics so you will learn. Great professor.
Professor Shinbrot has lots of lectures and requires full attention to be paid when in class/listening to lectures. There are not many opportunities to raise your grade and the midterms/final exams are somewhat difficult. Overall, not ideal but not terrible either.
Professor Shinbrot's class IS hard, but I really feel like I learned a lot and was appropriately challenged. She provided all of the readings for free, so I was able to save some money there. She will review your outlines and drafts of essays and this is key to getting a good grade. She wants to see everyone succeed.
She is tough, but really pushes you to be a better writer. I feel challenged by her, and shes always willing to help. Setting up office hours to review essays is the smartest thing you can do! Pay attention during lectures to understand the readings, this will help you on the quizzes. Be respectful in class and you will do great.
Just don't take this class. There are better classes to take unless you actually enjoyed reading literature and writing. Attendance is 100 percent mandatory since quizzes are mostly lecture based. She made class entertaining but gets upset if we dont understand the readings. Discussions due before class and reading quizzes every week.
wonderful professor! class is tough, but is expected since its an upper division. Get ready to read, but if you don't understand, the professor is willing to help you.
Professor weights 70% of your grade based on 3 test - 2 midterms and 1 final. 70% of the grade. That is outrageous.
Took this class to fill up my schedule for FAFSA requirements and had a great time! Only thing I wish she did was NOT assign quizzes and discussions over the weekend. It's an online class. Open it for the week. Grade quizzes automatically. She did waste a lot of my time by not having everything open but lectures are prerecorded thankfully.
Wow was she a tough cookie -- kind of a mean, not a nice grader and very opinionated in class. I am very glad I will never have to take a class with her again
Great professor who's knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Some readings were challenging but often led to interesting discussions. She shares her expertise and also encourages students to express ideas and has students lead some of the discussions. Her standards are high, but I expect that from a grad class.
This professor has a well set-up online course. Although, I would rather listen to a shorter lecture every week instead of the very long class discussions and such. We are taking an online class in theory.
Really liked this professor. Her lectures are great because she takes tough readings and breaks them down in a way that's easy to understand. She genuinely wants you to grasp the material and remember it. Met with her during office hours to discuss papers and she was easy to talk to her and super helpful. Plus, she's funny, which is always a bonus!
Mid prof. Never had such a sus instructor since starting at csus, reminds me of community college. Micromanages every assignment and hides every score until the following week after they manually grade. Didn't eat with this course.
Great subject, not so great professor. The content of the class was amazing, but I did not like the professor. Had to do a 45-question exam in 50-55 minutes which was not enough time since there was written response questions. You will have to study very hard in order to get a good grade.
She is not a bad professor she has a lot of knowledge about the subject. There is a lot of reading you need to do for not even that big of assignments. The tests are not easy so study hard for those. One essay and 5 discussion posts. Do not use AI she is extremely strict on that. She will go all out to find unoriginal work and she'll report you!!!!
Better hope she likes you. Classes or lecture heavy and not engaging. Gets offended easily. Complains about personal matters. Take a different professor.
Every week there could be a quiz, discussion post, or both. There's a lecture and recommended reading every week. Lecture videos were an hour long and were a little boring.
