She goes rediculously fast, hard to understand accent and just overall wants us to know a extremely high amount of things. Doesnt curve grades, gives a quiz EVERY week.
She is very specific about what she teaches. Is in research currently. Does not tell all of the details out of the book, may be best not to read it or you'll get confused. Make SURE you visit her office hours. You'll get all the help you need. Be personable.
She is the worst teacher ive ever had!!!! I didnt understand her... she moved entirely too freakin fast and she didnt curve her tests so the entire class was failing... i dropped her class b/c i was failing and now am making deans list. DO NOT TAKE HER IF U CAN HELP IT!!!!
The class is on the difficult side but once you are finished with the class you will definately know your cell bio. If you attend class, take good notes, and visit her office hours you'll do fine.
If you think she's a bad teacher, you should try another prof-she's the best biology teacher I've had in m life-If you are smart and know how to pay attn, you will be fine-the concepts are not that hard...students are just idiots...will definitely take her again:)
Irani is not very clear.
Dr. Irani is an extriemly difficult professor, she is unclear and when she grades she takes off points but does not show why the points were taken off, or how to improve for future reference. She is a very knoledgable woman, who needs to realize that she is teaching undergraduate courses, she has potential to be a very good professor... in time.
impossible
Avoid her! She is HORRIBLE! I went to her for help so many times and got nothing. There are no attendence points, no homework. Grade is based on quizzes every Friday and exams. At one point more than half the class was failing and that was with a curve! She is VERY unclear and doesn't want to teaching under grad students I will never take her again
Never ever ever ever take this class. It's pure torture.
It was a hard class but I think she is very helpful if you go to see her. You must study and go to class.
There is no doubt about it, the material is beyond rediculously hard. Many students struggle, but if you are taking this class it's probably because you HAVE to. She tries and really cares about her students. VERY nice lady, even though I hated her at first but go to class, go to her office and talk to her, and study!!! Tests are impossssssible!
Actually...if you ARE a serious student, who likes science and all those things...she is the perfect teacher. If you are just...somebody who takes the class because you need it...forget about it. She is told to be a tough teacher, but she is really nice. She worries about you learning stuff. ALthough..her accent is weird...
OMG!!! IF YOU ARE NOT LOOKING TO KILL YOURSELF THEN DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.. ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS.... EVEN ALBERT EINSTEIN COULDN'T(*lol)
Not so good a teacher. She goes through her lectures at super speed and laughs at you when you ask for her to slow down or repeat something. You have to be able to draw EVERYTHING! If you can't "you should know" as she always puts it. She seems to be a nice person and has a sense of humor, but she needs to be able to TEACH!
THE hardest teacher I've encountered. It's true her lectures are fast and most of the time the class is literally LOST. But it IS possible to pass her class. I managed to get an A through nothing but hard work and showing her that I was working hard and interested. After taking her, I learned so much I could teach the class myself! It was worth it!
Class in not manditory but you better go or you will fall behind. The Quizes and Test are imposible to pass unless you make cell bio your number one Priority. But this is the best CELL BIO teacher in the deptartment so you are better of taken her and trying your best.
The hardest teacher I've ever had...until now. It is possible to get an A+ with her. Just study hard :-D////I mean HARD
Sweetest lady of all time....i would take her again if i could in a second, i think she was awesome
Dr. Irani is tough.. buuut she is a great professor. She made sure that we were learning the material as we went instead of cramming at the last second. However, if you are not prepared to work hard, do not take this class.
Dr.Irani is an extremely hard professor. She expects you to know everthing and does not help too much. The only thing that helped me pass was going to her visit hours and showing that you are interested. She can be nice at times, but shes just very very hard. The class is not easy either. I've never studied so much for one class ever.
Straight from ther bokk. must attend to get an book outline
Decent professor...the class is very hard and you must study and do well on the quizes that are random..you can maybe miss 1 lecture per exam and still do well enough to pass...everything on exams is from the book from definitions to having to memorize tables in the book..not a fun class but study and you will pass..you must do well on the unkowns
I don't know where to begin. No lab book. No handouts or in class activities. Talks so fast that the only way to take notes is to highlight what she is talking about in class. Sometimes refuses to answer questions, claiming she is busy. Often vanishes in lab without telling you where she is going. Talks about personal things at office hours.
Absolutely the worst experience I have had at college. She fails to teach. She only talks and you highlight. She barely answers questions and her tests are next to impossible. She made me hate science. Absolutely terrible. DO NOT TAKE HER!
she thinks she is the best thing ever !!!!!!
EVEN GOD WOULDNT UNDERSTAND HER TECHNIQUE OF TEACHING. HE WOULD WITHDRAW FROM THE CLASS AND NEVER MAKE SUCH THING AS STUDYING EVER AGAIN.
very boring and wont ever help students....
Irani is absolutely the WORST teacher i have ever had. She is so rude and offensive in multiple ways and doesn't care about her students at all. Her teaching style is to tell you what to highlight in the book and thats it. Her tests are ridiculously hard and so are her quizzes. I believe about 80% of my class is failing. DON'T TAKE HER!SHE IS AWFUL
impossible lab, not helpful, hated every second of it.
This is a hard class, but her tests are fair- she only uses material she talked about in class, and everything sticks close to the book. Most test questions are knowledge-based. She likes to joke around and is not as mean as everyone says! Lab is not hard (it's actually sort of fun) but you must do well on your unknowns.
Awesome teacher! Very dedicated to her work. Wants to see you succeed. Powerpoints almost directly from the book, which she puts on the p-drive. Decent amount of extra credit. But don't slack in her class. Put 120% into studying! Her tests are fair but can't pass without studying.
DON'T TAKE! So hard, doesn't curve...lab is hard and hurts alot more than it helps. you need the book, she says she only tests on things she covers but if she mentions the title, it's considered covered. she gave 2 A's all semester and taught multiple classes. nice lady, very hard class
Awesome person but horrible teacher. This is a teach yourself class. She says all you need to know is what is on the powerpoints (which come directly from the book) but if it's in the book, you need to know it. Lab is fun, but really hurts your grade. Says she is there to help you get a good grade in the class, but could really care less.
If you had the time to read your book 5 to 6 times you could get an A. But the fact is most of us are nursing majors and can not. Best advice is to read read read and memorize any charts she specifies.
Dr. Irani is a tough teacher, yes. But if you work hard and approach her you will do fine. Yes it's very stressful and time consuming but you learn so much. I recommend students to take her because she's a good COLLEGE professor. You have to earn your grade. From taking her class I know how to study better for other classes.
She's a nice woman, and the best advice I can give you is to approach her. She is a bit intimidating but very willing to help. If you are going to grad school, I would highly recommend her. Prepare for some next level studying if you want an A.
VERY hard teacher. She does not simplify the info or make it easy for you to understand. The info is very difficult and it is very hard to receive a good grade. There is not enough time to read and understand material and then be tested every two weeks. Class is definitely not tested like a 200-level class.
Dr. Irani seems intimidating, but if you talk to her outside of class she's really nice. The class is insanely difficult nonetheless. She's sometimes hard to understand. Goes REALLY fast. Don't even think about using your cell phone in class b/c she'll see you and yell. Best advice: read your book like nobody's business.
have to work really hard to pass the course, barely possible to get a A. i 've spent time to read textbook before very exam, but still fail. to be considerate before taking this teacher's class. she is very hard teacher, but nice. overall, she doesn't help on exam. all have to do is study and study
Dr. Irani is intimidating up front, but go to her office hours and talk to her. She's the most helpful and caring professor I've had at IUP. Her passion inspired me to switch my major to biology. As for the exams, read the text and make sure to copy down and understand what she writes on the board during class. It's all in the details.
Hardest class I've taken so far. Exams you get 50 minutes for 75 questions. Only three tests to determine your grade besides lab which I would not rely on to boost your grade. VERY difficult course would suggest taking microbiology at a community college
Tests are hard, nothing like whats covered in lecture. Tests were on up to 10 chapters at a time which were spread out in about 200 pages of the graduate level text book which was difficult to understand. Lecture was always interesting, she has a lot of enthusiasm, you can tell she has passion for her work. Happy to help, gotta ask for it. STUDY
She doesn't give any homework whatsoever! There are a total of 4 exams and they are not cumulative. The first 3 are worth 75pts and the final is 125pts. Keep in mind lab is only worth 1/4 of your overall grade... She is a very sarcastic person and at times very mean! Go to class or you will fail! Everything she talks about is not on the slides!
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. Her exams are almost impossible unless you study EVERYDAY and read from the book. I study everyday and go to SI and still have a low C. Lab is tough too. Gives you almost no points. Take Microbiology somewhere else. Irani is a nice person, but as a professor.. not so much. Hope this helps.
Take this class at a community college if possible. This is my third time taking this class and she does not make it easy to pass. Ive gotten 30% on her exams when I usually am a straight A student. Be prepared to work hard. If you don't study for more than 10 hours a week you will not pass.
Dr. Irani is definitely a college/grad level professor. She's not a bad person, but a very difficult grader. Exams seem near impossible. You will need to read the entire book, attend all lectures, and know everything on the slides and said in class in order to pass. Very difficult class, take at a community college if possible.
Hardest professor I've ever had. Go to class, study, study, study! Don't worry if you bomb the first exam, you can still pass and even get an A. She'll give bonus points during lectures sometimes - don't take them lightly, she even grades them hard. Go to SI, it helps so much.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Her tests were impossible, along with lab exams. Even if you go see her to get help and talk about your grade, she will assure you that you are doing fine. Her exams took me the entire class. Even with reading the book, taking notes and having a study group the class was super tough.
Easily the worst woman I have ever experienced. I made the mistake of crying in front of her one time and she told me, "to get away from her she doesn't get paid enough for my tears". I recommend avoiding her like the plague! I took this class at a different school and got an A. It was actually one of my favorite classes ever taken.
Know going into this class that you will have to work very hard all semester. There is a lot of information and it can easily get to be too much so you have to keep up with it. Go to SI and study a lot! I was too intimidated by Irani to go to her for help and I did just fine by using tutoring and SI.
All I heard going into microbiology was to not take Irani. The way they have it for us is that we have Gleason for lecture and Irani for lab and I WISH I HAD IRANI FOR LECTURE. She goes into detail and explains why these things are important to us! Especially if you're going into the health field. She's very tough but you'll actually learn.
Dr. Irani's Microbiology was the toughest class I ever took, but I learned the most from her. Hard work in her class pays off. If you're just looking for a quick pass, you won't get it here; but, if you actually want to learn, she's your go-to. She's brilliant and actually cares about her students' education.
She might be a very amiable person outside of lab, but in lab she is an intimidating and "no-nonsense" type of professor. Her quizzes are difficult, and on top of that she is a picky grader. However, she is passionate about Microbiology and when you do something correctly, a pat on the back from Dr. Irani means alot!
I never knew the word intro was a subjective term! Take this course elsewhere. Dr. Irani is by far the worst professor Ive had at IUP. As soon as you think you begin to grasp the information, the exam tells you otherwise. It surprises me how one person can make learning so undesirable. This is not how higher education should be presented.
She is by far the worst professor I've had here. All of the test averages are failing grades and she doesn't care at all. There is so much information to know in such little time, so you need to study 24/7. She doesn't care about her students failing and half the class dropped out already. DO NOT TAKE unless you're looking to fail
Very smart woman Ill give her that. Besides that, she is a very distraught person. Maybe she should focus more on caring about her students grades and actually teaching instead of pretending to be a dictator.
Dr. Irani is one of my favorite professors at IUP. She's really tough as a professor and her class is extremely challenging, but if you go to her for help she'll do whatever she can for you!
Dr. Irani is by far the worst professor I have ever taken. I went to her office hours, read the book, and understood the material but her test do not match anything she has taught you in class or what you have read. She expects you to know everything about micro even though she never taught it. Do NOT take her class, you WILL FAIL, take it online.
she only helps the nerds. but people who struggle and need help she ignores them. She is the worst ever
She's a nice person, however, a straight A student will get a C in her class. Only had her for lab but the quizzes and exams don't match at all with what she teaches. Grading wise, one of the worst teachers at IUP. Quizzes were all fill in the blank and exams are just ridiculous. She had grammatical errors on exams/quizzes too, just unprofessional
Shes the definition of exam material not matching what is taught. Just absurd how she expects you to figure material out on your own that she never even remotely went over for the exam. Save yourself the headache, frustration, and stress and dont take her.
If you want to pass her class, you have to work extremely hard. For lecture you have to pay attention to the smallest details for the exams. Know every single detail of the slides. Her lectures are very interesting though and she cares about her students. She gives xc through the quizzes and sends you practice questions. Go to her review sessions!
Very frustrated with the fact that I cannot have physical classes because I can't learn very well online, but I get it with COVID. It would be very nice if she could have the decency to have zoom classes but no, she decided to just post power points with a voice over. She is very strict about the format of our assignments but doesn't explain well
Horrible prof. She assigns things and does not explain how to do it, then gets mad when half the class doesn't do it correctly. Is not at all considerate of what students are going through with COVID. Exams test you on tiny little details that are easily missed or not mentioned in lecture at all. Easily the worst prof I've ever had.
A lot of lecture material to study for tests, and not a lot of time given for quizzes. Be prepared for ethics questions tied to the chapter book you read for assignments and discussion posts. Hard grader for small points. Very harsh during review sessions, make sure you bring questions to ask. If zoom, "cameras on at all times." Would not recommend
It is a miracle that I passed this class. The only thing that kept my grade decent was the discussion book (which she used for her BIO104 class with the same discussions & assignments). For lab, we only had 3 quizzes and they were open ended so i failed all of them. She only posts slides with a voice over for both lab and lecture, & it didn't help.
Dr. Irani has very strict grading criteria and the tests are difficult. She also added a discussion book this year that felt out of place and unimportant but helped boost the grade. I didn't find the class incredibly difficult but you definitely need to study before each test. I wouldn't say avoid her but maybe taking someone else would be good.
WORST prof I have ever taken. I don't know why IUP continues to keep her to teach. Very rude, class is set up very poorly. Makes me disgusted.
I am confused by how some professors continue abuse the power they are given and still feel they are a good teacher. Yes I'm making this personal the amount of nonsense occurred in this class, absurd. it took one BIO 241 by her to completely wanna drop out with a 3.8 BIO GPA. Did a lil mistake you get 0 wanna ask what you did wrong get outta here.
Dr. Irani is the worst professor I have ever taken. She grades very roughly and if you make a tiny mistake you will get zero points. She has random assignments based on the book we read, which you have to write about. She took off points on my assignment for "not following directions" when I cited my sources. Overall, do not take this class.
Absolutely horrendous. The book you use for the class has nothing to do with the course work. Shes a nitpicker when it comes to grading. She definitely abuses the power in the position she has been given. Please try to avoid taking her for any course if you actually want to learn and succeed.
Dr. Irani is the worst professor I have ever taken. She abuses her power. This class is very hard. Any tiny mistake and she gives you a zero. This class has nothing to do with microbiology in general. Please avoid taking if you want to actually pass.
Please do not take this class!! Due to COVID the class was online. However she did not physically teach lecture material. Instead she used powerpoint slides and voice over. She just read the lab manual and then gave us quizzes that was not on material taught. She is also a picky grader over ridiculous things. Save your self the stress!! Do not take
Don't ever think of taking this class unless you want to get stressed and an F grade!! It is extremely hard!! The professor is not professional at all, and all she wants is to make sure that everyone is failing in her class. Don't take it.
Dr. Irani is a very nice professor but her teaching abilities leave much to be desired. Since class was online for covid, she didn't put much effort into it. Lectures were powerpoints with voice overs and exams/quizzes contained material that was not discussed. Disappointing but a nice woman.
Dr. Irani tests at a mastery level. She will say to ask her anything but gets frustrated when you dont understand. I have never failed a course but I failed BIOL241. As a class we told her we were all going to fail and she simply did not care. DO NOT take this course with Irani.
Do you desire undue stress? Then step right up for Micro with Irani! She makes her exams literally impossible because of methods of trying to prevent cheating. You don't have enough time to read a Q and discern btwn SEVEN possible answers to make an educated guess even if you know the material. NOT an introductory class like it is supposed to be.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I recommend taking this class through Geneva. Geneva is online, around 900$, and you have a year to do it. Nobody did well in this class, no matter how hard they tried. Lecture consisted of quizzes, exams, reading homework, and discussions based on reading. You cannot catch a break in this class. Passing is rare
This professor made me want to drop out of my very last year of school. I have never had a problem with a professor until I took her class (there were no other available classes). She yelled at me because I asked a simple question even though she told us to ask questions. She gave no clear instructions. The book also has nothing to do with the class
This might be the worse professor I ever had to take. She cares too much for a class that is only worth 1 credit. She only gives you 20 minutes to do the quizzes and basically talks during it. She grades way to hard for small points. You will feel like you never get a break from this class.
Dr. Irani is terrible. She grades with absolutely no thought behind her process and just throws out terrible scores. She constantly tells her students that none of her exams or quizzes will have any information memorized, yet throws questions on there that you need to memorize. It was a lab class and I did 5-6X as much HW than the lecture.
I have not heard ONE good thing about this women lol
Beware that she may teach things that are just downright false, if you actually care about what you're learning in this class, then fact-check her. Also, her quizzes are quite intensive. They are usually about 10 questions each, and you only get around 1 minute per question.
Very strict and does not work well with students. Lecture are extremely boring and makes the quizzes and tests much different than lectures.
you are set up to fail. grading and feedback is extremely unclear. no one can do good or get good grades. she is miserable all the time and will make sure you are too. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF
This professor is awful. She gives zeros for papers that aren't even turned in yet and gives no time for exams. She is a miserable human being forcing everyone else to be miserable. She will fail you no matter how hard you try. Do NOT take this professor unless you want to fail!
Apparently she sued the university (lost) and now she has free reign. Her homework and test requirements are nonsense and unrelated to anything in textbooks or about intro biology. She threatens to fail students instead of offering any assistance, and IUP is too afraid to hold her accountable. I'm maintaining a 3.8 GPA and failing this class???
This is the type of professor that makes you want to transfer from IUP. The only reason that I put the tag hilarious to describe her is because it's hilarious that she still works at IUP let alone any school. Oh yeah she's also graded by few things because she'd rather fail you then look at the work you put in. At this point let a caveman teach.
She's pretty funny and jokes around but her exams are nearly impossible. the whole class nearly failed the midterm. if you dont go to the lab you literally will fail due to participation points being the saving of your grade. She lectures then does the lab which is fine but she's definitely more difficult for a 100 level course.
She is a very kind and caring woman, but not the best professor. She is very nit-picky with small details. She claims attendance is required but very very rarely takes attendance. She will randomly do mini quizzes for bonus points at the end of class, and they can help a lot. Sometimes she goes a bit fast and her exam questions are different.
Where do I begin. She is awful at teaching a large lecture. She does not use any form of microphone, and never speaks up. Her homework assignments are primarily opinion based, so if your opinion does not align with her's good luck getting above a 60%. Her exams are 50 questions 50 min. Her syllabus changed in the last week for mandatory attendance.
as a generally good student, i assumed i would be fine in this class. i was very wrong. not only does this woman quiz you on the tiniest of details but she also nearly soley relies on quizzes and exams for your grade. she is a TOUGH grader on homework giving students anywhere from a 0-60% on one page assignments. she was rude and hard to understand
Had Dr. Irani for lab and it was fine. Labs could be tough but were only graded based on participation. Midterm exam was unnecessarily hard, so she had to change the final to make it easier. She is mostly nice and willing to help out if you ask. Wouldn't take another one of her classes though because I was always stressed.
I would not recommend her to anyone. She is very hard to hear/understand and grades VERY hard. Although I received a B in her class it was super hard. Tests are all online but there are a few pop quizzes she does in class.
Irani was difficult to understand in her lectures. She would not let you take a photo of the notes that she wrote on the board that were not a part of the PowerPoint. Also, make sure you do not have any emergency during her class time because I missed an exam because I was in the hospital and she refused to give me a makeup time, so I got a zero.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. I have her for lab and she lectures and talks for about 2 hours each week and then sometimes we will answer one thing and leave. She also made us read a chapter book and do three book reports during the semester. I have an A in the lecture yet am failing the lab. Avoid taking her if you can.
She talks like my grandfather and thats saying something cause my grandfathers dead. Youd have an easier time trying to understand your dog. DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS. IF IT COMES DOWN TO TAKING THE CLASS OR DROPPING OUT, JUST DROP OUT
Dr. Irani is not the professor to teach a 100 level class. She is obviously very intelligent, but does not lack the simplification skills to teach many majors who, to be honest, don't really care about biology. I am only 4 weeks into her class, and I find myself focusing on biology more than my actual major. Very stress-inducing.
She is just a bad teacher. The tests are extremely hard, she can be rude at times and shut down ur opinions and ideas. People will ask questions in class and her tone of voice and how she responds makes it seem like she thinks they're stupid. She also talks too quiet.
Not an easy level 100 class
She goes through slides very fast makes it hard to keep up. forgets that it's an entry level class. Tests are very hard unless you are studying and reading the book every day. First exam the class average was a 65% and all she said is now you know what to expect. I was not able to find an effective way to study.Would avoid like the plague
Dr. Irani is obviously a very intelligent lady...but not the person to be teaching a level 100 class. It got to a point where I was studying biology more than my actual major. She is very kind, and does care about her students, but for an intro class, it caused way more stress than it should have.
I think she'd be a great intro professor for Bio majors as she thoroughly explains foundational concepts, but as for every other major, I'd avoid taking her 104 Lecture. She goes through 1-2 Chapters each class and her exams include content not discussed in class. The way she frames questions on exams is weird, so be prepared.
Would give random pop quizzes at the beginning or end of class about material she just taught, and if you weren't in class, you would get a 0 no matter excused or not. Exams are extremely hard and our class got terrible averages on them. Powerpoint are filled top to bottom with information, but it is somehow never on the exam. All exams are online.
Cancelled so many classes.Sometimes I would go 1-2 weeks without going to her class from how often she cancelled. She was extremely rude to students and embarrassed them in front everyone if they took a picture of the board or were just trying to audio record the lecture. Don't expect any sympathy or accommodations from her no matter what.
Dr. Irani has an awesome personality. She is hilarious in lab, and she makes it very interesting! Lecture is tough. Quizes and Tests are quite difficult, but lab can help a lot so definitely make sure you always go to lab! She is very approachable for questions, and she is always willing to help! The book is not super necessary, but it can help.
For a BIO 104 course, it feels way too hard. Repetitive with the online class feature, and by the end had to teach myself the final material because she didn't teach. Lots of pop quizzes for class participation, and is not loud enough, so don't sit in the back. She does ask if people have questions a lot, so utilize that!!
Irani's class was a real challenge. Her lectures were hard to follow, and the exams were extremely difficult. Attendance is mandatory, but she rarely takes it. I found unstuck study and the textbook helpful for preparing. Overall, a tough class, but engaging with the material can pay off.
By far my worst experience ever with a teacher. I consider myself a student who gets good grades and for a 100 level class that I had to take, my major isn't even related to science, was insane. not responsive or helpful when asked questions and won't allow you to better your grade so good luck. If you get this teacher i would drop/switch teachers
i was scared after seeing her reviews but i personally thought she was pretty entertaining. she was not near as bad as the reviews say. id actually go as far to say she was nice. the class material wasn't EXTREMELY difficult. i'd give her a solid 6.9/10.
