HORRIBLE!!! I love math and yet I HATE this professor. He does not know how to explain Calculus. His tests are ridiculously harder than the homework. He expects you to understand everything without explaining things clearly.
He expects you to know calculus without teaching, by far the worst teacher i have ever had for math period. Seriously take at your own risk.
He is a very nice teacher. I took his summer class and there was quite a bit of homework. He tests on every chapter but his tests are extremely harder than his homework. If you want a challenge, take him.
I did not like this teacher at all. Most of his lectures were verbatim out of the book. His tests are extremely difficult because they require you to remember some obscure facts from High School trig or need some mathematical trick to solve never covered in class. Half the class failed most of tests just to give you an idea!
WOW! he is soo bad. His lecture examples almost never help on tests and homework. He expects way too much; he has things on tests that are way to complex. Anytime you ask for help he just says, "you know what to do, it's easy" Stay Away from this professor!
Tests are extremely difficult, and most of the time completely different from homework and examples done in class. The average on the tests were all failing. I wouldn't suggest him unless you already know calculus.
He's not a very good teacher but he's really nice. He gets his lectures straight from the book so there not very helpful. The only good thing is that he tells you exactly whats gonna be on the test and he also allows a cheat sheet.
I had him for 31 and 32 and both class got A. His exams are practically based on the textbook work, especially the chapter reviews. His notes aren't that bad, but he is really hard to understand. So if you think you can study out of the textbook and if you do all the homework assigned (good idea) then you should be fine!
Nguyen is one of the harder math professors at SJSU. He tries to help. Do NOT fall behind.
Pretty easy class, the way it's organized and all. He gives an extra week to do each homework without losing points and as long as you always come to class and write down all his notes. Was an easy A.
Spend time on your hmwrk! easy 25% of grade, plus he will use the hmwrk prblms or review prblms on exam. 4 exams = 50% of grade. (Final=25%) TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHAT WILL BE ON TEST DURING REVIEW DAYS. 70-100% of review will be on exam (or VERY similar prblms) He wants people to pass, so just go to class and reviews, try ALL homework problems!
Homework is graded which is helpful, keeps you on track of material. 4 midterms and 1 final. Because almost all students didn't do well on 1st midterm he made 2nd and 3rd so EASY! so ppl could get better grade in class :). Def. take him, lectures are clear, he summarizes all the garbage in the book.
poor guy. he lectured and i did not understand, i asked him about the material. he made fun of me in front of whole class and told everybody that i asked him stupid question. he should not be professor. he didn't give us enough examples instead of he had plenty of time to talk about his proud life. ps. you guys should not take his class.
DON'T TAKE HIM!! HE WILL MAKE U HATE MATH EVEN MORE!!
He is practically impossible to understand. He speaks quickly with very poor English grammar. He drops consonants and misuses pronouns and to-be verbs. When speaking, he faces the board instead of the class. His writing is often illegible, forcing students to decipher simple variables and numbers. His teaching is unacceptable for this university.
The worst, he says "O come on, you guys should know this, its easy." He teaches like the students have already taken calculus. First calculus class was taken with him and I failed, took it a second time with a different teacher and got an A-. I currently have a math minor and am an engineer major...
he expects you to remember a lot of what you learned in previous courses without review. I would not recommend for Calulus I but II and on I say go for it. The exams did not allow calculator/cheat sheet so he made them relatively easy. Tells you what will be on the exam in a review the day before. Overall good experience if you keep up with HW.
he can be hard to understand at times but after a while you understand him better, his handwriting can be bad sometimes but most of the time its legible. If you do the homework and go to class you should be fine he makes the exams relatively easy and gives a review the day before with everything that will be on the exam just study and youll be fine
This professor is Great. He lecture and get to the point unlike other math teacher I took. If you do all the review for the midterm and Final, you will be fine. Everything he review will be similar to the exam. His grading scale is amazing. I got an D on my first midterm,He gave me an B-. Take him,he is good professor!!
people say he's hard and boring but honestly he really did try his best to make sure everyone understood the topic and would pass with at least a C. He lets you use 1 page of notes double sided for both midterms and you can use 3 note sheets for the final. He has the thick Asian ascent but u can get pass that pretty quick. 1 or 2 weeks to do HW.
Pretty easy class if you pay attention and take good notes. Reviews midterms the class before and tells you what will be on them, some of the problems which are exactly the same. 10 homeworks, 2 midterms, 1 final. Lets you use 1 page of notes double sided for midterms. Got a B+ in the class.
This is a pretty tough class, but you will learn a lot. All you need to do is do his homework, review the daily notes, study his review guide before tests, practice doing the problems and memorize the formulas EARLY!
Hard to get used to is accent, but other than that he is a pretty good teacher. His homework hardly helped me so you'll probs have to do extra problems on the side to get a grasp on the material.. if you know your math then this class will be fine!
EXTREMELY helpful professor. While his asian accent is quite thick, it is very easy to get used to and he makes time before each lecture to answer any questions about the homework in detail. His midterms and the final are basically copies of the review that he does for the class prior to each test. He also has a rather generous grading curve.
10 homework assignments, 2 midterms, 1 final. Grades on a curve, starts each class session with time to answer any questions. He has an accent however is quite humorous and easy to get use to the accent. Simply take notes, ask questions, attend review days and learn formulas!
Hes an alright teacher. If you took AP Calculus in Highschool you can past his class easy. I guess it would be extremely hard though if you didin't. He teaches the class kinda fast. More of a review class then a learning new material class.
He's super easy! Ten homework assignments that mostly just boost your grade. For midterms just study the midterm reviews and you'll do fine. Five pages of back and front notes for the final. Just copy down the two midterms and a few notes from the chapter right before the final and you'll pass easily.
Nguyen writes down the daily lesson's notes on the board, assuming that when he is finished with the lesson, everyone gets it. To that extent, though, he grades on a large curve scale which helps to your benefit if you were to struggle on the topic of Calculus, and to his credit, has a very organized syllabus.
ehhh...accent bearable, clear daily plans written on the board. answers questions every class, but wont help review algebra. expects you to know algebra, one class you will learn 1 to 2 sections. also, he plays mind games, will not tell you what is on the mid term in its entirety
This professor has an accent that you have to get used to. But he explains lecture materials pretty well and his examples are easy to understand, so make sure you attend his classes! HW is not a big problem as long as you understand the concepts and do well on midterms and finals which count the most. He always gives tips to his students.
Midterms & finals are all from the study guide. The equations are almost exactly the same as the study guide he gives you. We are also allowed to use a cheatsheet so I'm just basically copying down all my answers. No we bassign and you don't really need the textbook because you can finish your homework easily during workshop. Use someone else's book.
Great teacher hands down. Although his accent was a struggle to understand I reccomend him. His homework is a light load and his test are easy as long as you attend review sessions. Overall good teacher.
He was a fantastic teacher! Real talk, his accent might catch you off guard at first but you get used to it. He also has a great sense of humor and makes the class enjoyable. His class is incredibly easy and simple. Your grade basically revolves around his 3 midterms, which are very easy if you attend the class review. I highly recommend him.
As long as you attend class, take good notes , and know the material beforehand, then you will pass his class. He is easy to reach by email. When I asked him for homework help, he kind of give you hints how to solve the problem.
If you already have a hard time in math, your gonna have a hard time in BUS 71. Attend every class, take all the notes. Allows 1 full sheet of paper (both sides) for 2 midterms, and 2 sheets of paper (4 sides) for the final. Should I have gone to office hours, I probably would have gotten a higher grade. Used calchat for last 1/2 of semester.
Nguyen is one of the best professors I've had. Lectures are informative and straight to the point. He rarely goes off on a tangent, but its a nice break from lecture and he will make you laugh. Tough tests, you HAVE to study, but easy grader. By the end you'll know it all. Took him 2 semesters back to back. Wish he was teaching Calc this summer
He is really an amazing professor. I will take him again if I get a chance. Easy A. Funny during lectures. Say what you need to study on tests. I recommend him. Easy tests. Gives review before exams. Just go thru them and you will receive good grade.
He does have an accent but is a really great teacher! He'll usually explicitly tells you step by step how to solve problems during lecture so don't skip. He also reviews everything that would be on your midtermsfinal. He really does try his best to help you if he sees that you're putting in effort in class. Wish he could teach all my math classes!
A decent professor for math 71. He has a very lenient grading policy and willing to encourage his student pass this course. You're allowed to use 4 pages of notes on the final and 2 pages of notes for one of his exam. Questions on the exams are based of the review sessions and the chapters from the book. Only way to fail is to not show up to class.
Show up to every lecture and pay attention. Do the hw cuz that can be the difference of passing and not. Literally this is one of the few classes where the class was usually full every lecture cuz everyone knew the material is hard. He curves the tests and there are only 3 exams including the final. Study hard and show up to his review lecture.
He is hilarious
This professor was awesome and funny. He was so nice about curving the tests every time. He gave a chance for everyone to pass his class with at least a C, even for those who don't really go to his lectures. I got a solid A in his class. You can get an easy A too as long as you do the homework and try your best to understand the concepts.
This professor genuinely cares about you passing and understanding the material. He is very straight forward with his teaching, however, his examples in class will always be easier than the homework so make sure you do your homework (it'll also help even out your test grades despite what others say). Tests follow his reviews well, great class.
DOES NOT BOTHER TO HELP YOU. Tests are tough I mean 41% passing rate on the first exam. Can never understand him and doesn't care whether you pass or not
Really knows his material and does his best to teach the class. He provides a lot of examples during his lectures but they're way easier than the homework and tests. He grades based on a curve so don't stress out too much, the class and material is hard itself but really does want students to pass and understand math.
Explains the material clearly and has a sense of humor. The exams are not so hard if you've studied (read the textbook, it helps!). For my class he let us use a full page of notes (front and back) for the last 2 out of 3 exams. His class includes homework which is beneficial to do because they boost your grade in the case of bad exam scores. (:
Exams are similar to the homework and the study guide he hands out. His curving is a bit different from others. For example, if first exam average is 65%, then 65% is a C and in increments of 4, meaning 69% is a C+ and etc. The grade in the class is determined by the average of the final using the same curving methods as the previous exams.
His lectures are fast and hard to understand because he doesn't speak English very well. He said on the first day of class that he doesn't teach us because we should be able to teach ourselves. But if you love reading math textbooks then this is the class for you. Tests are hard. He doesn't give help.
Extremely hard to understand, needs to take English 1B... and 1A. Wears same clothes everyday, very distracting. Only redeeming is his alluring personality and charm. Get ready to fail.
Contributes to the high fail rate of business students. Speaks english, but pronunciation is trash. Hard to learn bc u spend so much time trying to understand him. Wears same outfit evryday lol. Tests are challenging but with studying are not difficult to get A's. Curves lik crazy and lets have cheat sheet. If you have a stable math background urok
He is extremely hard to understand. Says Log base b as logbaby and there's a bunch of other ones I can't remember but you have to learn to understand him or it's impossible. Tons of homework which he actually grades. Only good part is his massive curve. Took F grades on exams to a C grade, if not for this I would have failed big time.
He has a thick accent but after a while it's easy to understand him. He teaches the basics of the math concepts but the homework is ten times more complicated than what we learned in class. Also, he grades on accuracy on the homework which didn't help my grade at all
He speaks broken english with a heavy accent so it is difficult to understand what he is saying sometimes. The homework is not too bad for a math class. I showed up to class only to turn in homework and take the exams and I got a good grade. If you do not understand the material I recommend going to class.
It is really hard to learn because he not only speaks in broken english but his lectures are very short. The homework has more advanced questions and those more or less show up on the test and we haven't been instructed by the professor how to solve them or how to take notes on them for the test.
Absolutely awful teacher. I was locked into this prof's class and I had no option to change it (thanks SJSU). Complete waste of my time, tests are completely different from the material taught, and the accent is absolutely horrendous on top. Stay away from this class unless you want to fail and lose your financial aid (thanks Prof. Nguyen!!!!!)
hw isn't too bad, but tests are not at all related to hw. Curves, but it doesn't help much when the 52% of the class fails the exams. Got a C-, tried to contact him to maybe bump me up to a C, didn't bother to respond to me. Didn't like the teaching style, and the tests made me stress more than some of my other finals. Wouldn't take him again.
took him at EVC, but it appears that is the only class he taught there so i am putting it here. I took calculus 2 over the summer and he made it manageable. He graded on a curve, gave cheat sheets on the tests, and had good (funny and useful) lectures. I never felt like he was wasting our time. Take him if you want to learn (and work). Nice guy
Honestly, he's the easiest calc teacher compared to other ones. Online homework is pretty easy because he allows unlimited tries. His lectures are straight forward, and his notes give you everything you need. He speaks broken English but it's okay he tries hard to help his students understand which is amazing.
He's probably the best calc 2 professor you're going to find here at SJSU and his hw is due every Sunday night, which is super manageable and easy since it's online and we get unlimited tries on webassign. Be sure to study from his study guide because his tests are always similar, but if you want an A on them study recent material as well.
He is probably he best professor you will ever have in college. He tells you the important stuff and gets right to the point. His study guides are exactly like his exams and you get unlimited tries on the homework.
Math is hard but he tries to make it easy. Never had a math teacher as good as him. He tries to simplify math so that students can better understand. Unlimited hwk tries, no late work. Curves tests. Try and you'll pass. Really glad I got to take him. His subtle jokes made class enjoyable. He teaches at 4 schools, someone give this man a raise!!
Super funny professor! Make sure to ask questions in class and he'll have no problem going over them. He's super understanding about math difficulties and won't hesitate to help you.
I wouldn't take his class again. While Mr. Nguyen is a nice person, as a professor I would grade as poor his teaching skills. He seems to care, but his lectures are not helpful, hence the high failure rate in the class. I attended all his classes, did all the homework and still wasn't able to pass. Not sure if students are the problem, or if he is.
DUDE he literally let us use cheat sheets. Easiest class ever. He dumbed down tests because our class failed. All you have to do is copy his examples on board. Its exactly like his text questions but he combines a few concepts. Its hard because you have to practice to retain the knowledge. The homework is ass tho lol just online questions
Skipped class a bunch. One example problem he does every lecture takes up the whole board and all of the time. Hilarious and easy to troll. He cares about the class and let us use cheat sheets for exams. Just cram all the examples and take pictures of them. Three tests usually with an extra credit problem. The online hw helps cushion your grade.
I have to say he's pretty good. He speaks in a heavy Vietnamese accent, so be prepared to pay attention in lecture. He uses WebAssign with unlimited tries per question and he gives 1 week per assignment. He speaks fast and is very brief in lectures, but prepares you well for WebAssign and workshop if you take it. Class is: lecture then examples.
Tests are heavily based off lecture examples, so if you show up and take notes on everything it's pretty straightforward. Allowed a cheat sheet too, and had doable HW on Webassign.
This guy is pretty cool and has a funny accent. His midterms are extremely rough because of the new common final, where the problems (7 in a 50 minute time-frame) were very difficult. Half of them were basic dne (do not evaluate, just show form); the other half were not covered whatsoever either in lecture or textbook problems. Also uses webassign.
Don't know why his rating is so low. He always helps you when you ask a question and his tests are exactly like the study guides he gives! He also gives you 1 page of cheat sheet for midterms and 2 pages for the final. He assigns 20 homework questions each week but it has unlimited tries without a reduction to your overall grade.
The way he does for the lecture is really bad. He just gives you a formula then start practice. He doesn't even explain that formula or briefly proves the formula. Also, he would give at least five minutes for students to do on each example, but the lecture should be more prove of formula and new concepts, the way he does is really wasting time.
easy-going and likes to help out students, would definitely take professor Nguyen again!
Lectures arent clear and helpful. Doesnt teach well. Sometimes on quizzes, he puts questions on their that weve never seen before. Difficult to understand at times. This was through Zoom. Maybe the experience would be slightly better if it were in person, but I highly doubt it.
He explains the concepts and examples in the lectures, and he allows students to take pictures of the notes. He uses Webassign for homework and exams. We have 2 midterms and 1 final. Allow notes during the exam. The exam contains around 10 to 12 questions in 1 hour on the Webassign. To get a good score on his exam, review the study guides + hw.
Personality wise, not my favorite, but his lectures are very thorough and are really well done. Try not to miss class, asking him questions/for the class recording is a bit of a chore. Also, there is weekly homework due every Sunday, but it's not too difficult.
EASY CLASS! hw on Webassign and u have unlimited tries to get the right answers (get Chegg for help on it). The midterms are nearly identical to the hw. He has a slight accent, very strict about having mics + cams off. Lec focused on the important stuff + he lets u take pics of the notes afterwards. Zoom links sent an hr before each class. Easy A
professor nguyen is an amazing teacher. the only thing about him is that the example problems he gives in class are sometimes a lot easier than what's actually on the test. he is a really nice man and talks through each problem and how to do it. make sure to attend his zoom because he doesn't post recordings.
Homework and tests all on Webassign. What he teaches during class are pretty much what will be on the tests. Very helpful, always answers any questions we have and explains it thoroughly. You need to come to class because you only get the recordings if you have a valid reason, which I thought was an understandable policy. He's really nice!
Worst professor I've had at SJSU in my 3 years. Doesn't explain the concepts well.
I am a person who has always understood and enjoyed doing math! That is of course until this semester. I don't believe concepts were taught thoroughly in this class. Most of the semester was rushed. No doubt the professor provided good methods to approach problems. However, never really cared to explain. Doesn't care abt you. HE RUINED MATH FOR ME!
The class isn't so bad. He is very lenient on grading, but his lectures suck a lot and his way of teaching to far too bland. It's hard to come back from a bad midterm.
Lectures are straightforward and fast-paced, with several examples. Homework is on WebAssign, and you get unlimited attempts. Exams aren't difficult as long as you study your notes and understand homework really. No cheatsheet and no calculator though. He curves.
One of the best teachers honestly. Taught a lot through examples and always provides time in class to answer questions. Very straightforward and professional, great math teacher.
Professor Nguyen is decen at explaining topics in lectures but goes needlessly fast making things tough at times. He does care about his students but makes it clear that he has strict guidelines which he won't be lenient on. Even though tests can be tough, homework is on Webassign with unlimited attempts so that's a plus.
My only C at SJSU, this class was not well structured and poorly taught. He anticipated we would understand things after a single explanation and this was reflected in our exam scores- most of which were extremely poor. He doesn't speak english well, so know that going in and be sure to pay close attention. Good luck, tutor recommended!
He's a decent professor I'm guessing the disparity in the ratings is from the way he lectures. he's not like a middle school teacher with "fun or engaging teaching", then you might not be used to it. He keeps it very straightforward. His in-person lecture is also far better than his online ones. The online ones can be very hard to follow.
His homework is only 20 relatively simple questions per week, and his tests are extremely easy if you have paid attention in class and have taken notes. He even gives a cheat sheet so you can write down any equations you need for the tests. Pay attention in class and take notes and this will be a moderately easy A.
20 hw assignments that take time but are easy to do. 3 midterms, and study guides are exact replicas of the exams so it's easy to pass. 2/3 quizzes, also very easy if you study using his guide. Lecture is boring, and I had to use YouTube vids to understand concepts because he can be monotonous and so hard to follow. Not the best teacher but easy A.
Professor Nguyen is amazing! He is a great teacher and really cares about his students understanding the material. He gives WebAssign homework and 2 midterms and 1 final. Make sure to go to class and pay attention. It is easy to get a good grade in this class.
Good professor, helps the class. by teaching exactly what comes on the mid terms.
DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR VIET'S CLASS! he acts like he tries to help you but talks really fast. zooms through lectures like you already know what he's talking about. super strict and he blames the math department many of the times. he admits that a little over 1/3 of his students fail his class.
He is a pretty funny guy who gives good, clean, and easy to follow lectures. Has asian accent but you get used to it. Assigns HW from webassign (you have to buy the code for like $100) due every Sunday. Two midterms and then final. He gave us generous curves.
There are 2 midterms, 1 final, and homework. Midterms are simple if you have a basic understanding of the topic. For the second midterm he told us the topic of each question beforehand. Final was made by the Math department. Calculus 3 is a difficult class so while his lectures were helpful, you have to put in the work to understand the concepts.
this professor actually sucks!! do not take him. He made me take an exam while he was lecturing another class. He is a really tough grader. No office hours and he does not care about his student. grades only based on exams.
He is test heavy. Two midterms and finals are 90% of your points. 10% is homework.
Took math32 fall 2022. Not much homework, just 20 webassign problems every 2ish weeks. Exams were not hard, just do the review problems he gives and should be fine. He does curve if class average is low.
This professor is VERY straightforward. He only teaches you what you need, but does it quite well. He has quite an accent but you will get used to it and understand him well. The homework isn't bad, pretty standard weekly webassign and the tests are easy if you study and do the homework and study guide problems he gives.
Very unenthusiastic prof with a negative attitude. Not very approachable and few assignments to cushion grade. His midterms are nothing like the final exam, which makes up the bulk of your grade and is written by the math department. I managed to get As on both of his midterms but failed the final. Kissed my 4.0 away after taking this class.
Realistically the best calc 2 professor available. Attendance is MANDATORY for the first week because classes are impacted. Has a thick accent but it is manageable. Homework is done online and with infinite attempts at problems (free points). He's forgiving with test grading and gives lots of partial credit to help prepare for the final.
He's a good professor and tries not to make the class too hard so you can pass. The final will be hard, but the quizzes and midterms are manageable if you study/practice. Homework is free, since you get unlimited attempts. There is a lot of content in calc 2, so make sure you attend as many lectures as possible so you don't fall behind.
Professor Nguyen is passionate about teaching and explains problems while doing them in front of you. A new topic is talked about while being demonstrated on the board, after the class does practice problems on what was learned. Homework is assigned weekly and is not too bad. The only thing people may not like is his strong accent which you learn
Professor Nguyen is very nice, his midterms are exactly like the study guides he give so if you are able to understand the study guide very well then you are all set for the midterm. His lectures are very clear, I would say he is pretty good at explaining and he's also very funny.
just don't take him if you have any trouble in math. he doesn't have office hours, grades tough and unclear, and just doesn't seem to care much. everyone I know who takes him fails including me lol.
Not sure why people are complaining. his lectures are the standard: he writes on a whiteboard, it's not really a problem considering it's math. He responds to emails, idk what these people r cooking. He answers questions in class. So long as you know what you're doing, USE THE STUDY GUIDE, and actually exert effort for the class, you'll be fine.
One of the more easier math 19 professors out here. Make sure to know how to do all the problems on his practice review exams/midterms and you should be able to ace his midterms/exams. He is a very lenient grader and gives a lot of partial credit on midterms. He truly cares for students success by making the midterms as easy as possible.
Fairly easy class to pass. Professor Viet is focuses more on formulas and giving many examples rather than conceptual ideas. Midterms are also not as conceptual. Viet's lectures are all handwritten during class and none of the lectures are posted onto Canvas, therefore attendance/ finding someone that can send you the lecture is important.
Rambles or wastes 10 minutes gawking over how no one knows the answer to a question. -Only focuses on formulas/memorization -Lecture notes are unavailable on Canvas. Don't miss lectures on units you don't understand… -Partial credit is given on test questions, which helps, but his criteria is unclear!
Such a great professor!! Lectures and notes are not posted on canvas, so make sure to attend class or ask someone for the notes. The study guides he provides for his students is exactly similar to all the midterms. I recommend trying to complete them and attend the day he reviews the study guide in class to get a good grade on the exams.
Lectures are very heavy, if you miss one your our of luck. The homework at times is what is covered on the lecture but on lots of cases are completely uncovered material. Lots of time when ask to clarify he would either be very helpful or not, he at times would just tell you that you should know this and to just look at your notes.
A good lecturer and reasonable grader. Probably one of the better options for calc. Calc is always gonna be hard no matter what, and if you can't pass then tough luck, you're probably not fit for a STEM path. The classes aren't gonna get easier than this.
