He's not a very good teacher at all, but you can't get around him, he's the only teacher for 2 classes.
The WORST Professor ever!! Try not to take him if you can. Make sure you keep all your programs because he will collect them all at the end. Hint: Print them each time you write them.....he'll make your life hard...real hard!!
This is the best professor. If you are willing to learn he will make sure that you are successful. Very fair, tells you exactly what he expects. Great teacher, would love to take another class from him.
Should be the history of networking. He only knows technologies that have not been used for 10 years. Token Ring is dead! I think he is a programmer that is trying to be a network guy. If you don't know anything about computers, take him. Experienced people should take another teacher.
Mannnn, this class was hard!! No lie!! But Kalburgi is a good teacher. His main goal is to make each student learn and in order to do well in this course, you have to learn how to program!! No way around it!! The hard work will pay off in the end! Believe me.
Seems like a huge jerk at the beginning because he is trying to get rid of people who are worthless, it works. As the class size drops, he gets so much better. Buy the right kind of folder he wants from the very get go, or you'll be ticked at your grade. By the end, my favorite teacher.
Not the easiest course, but if you pay attention in class, do your homework, etc. You'll learn a lot. I've had 3 programming teachers thus far, and have learned the most from Kalburgi. Get the right notebook, though. That took me 2 or 3 tries (he's adamant about presentation, but rightfully so.)
If you put forth the effort he is always willing to help. All you have to do is follow instructions and you have an A. The way he presents the material makes it easy to learn. Would take him for as many classes as possible.
I have taken him for 3 classes. Programming without a doubt one of the best professors out there, when it gets to networking he does lose a little bit of steam. Granted we were messing with W2K3 which he was not that comfortable with. But a very helpful instructor. DO NOT SLACK OFF in his class...
This class definatly made me want to cry at times but he is a great prof. He's is a enigineer who knows programming INSIDE AND OUT. Most teachers will read from a book-he teaching from his knowledge and makes the class entertaining. Oh and the slacker part is true. that's always fun to watch.
Kalburgi is very hard on his students, however, he will help you. Ask a lot of questions and let him know that your trying to learn and you'll be fine.
Great class! Will take some time and work but the A is very obtainable. Kinda mean at first but hang in there and you'll be okay. He's always willing to help you out.
Great professor! Just don't say "I can't." He has little tollerance for anyone who gives up. He's very willing to help; don't be afraid to ask if you don't understand.
He's An **** At First, It's An Act Just To Get Rid Of The Quitters. He's Very Helpful Eventually. You'll Actually Learn A Lot At A Good Pace. Watch Out For His Smart Ass Comments Though, He Seems To Be A Part-time Comedian.
Expects alot from his students, but gives alot as well. Will not move on until he is sure everyone in class knows what is going on. I have rarely worked harder, and never learned more than I did in his class. Genuinely cares about his students!
This class had me stressed out... but I ended up getting an A.
Great Professor! Best programming teacher I ever had. Others would just read from a book. Do not procrastinate. His programs might take a little longer to compile, which might give you headaches. The class made me cry thinking that I was not going to make it. The exams make you feel like you must break a code before time is up.
Good teacher. He's friendly & answers all your questions. He tells you exactly what's on the tests & what he's looking for in your answers. Make sure to do all the assignments, it really helps.
he thinks he's a smart ass...do not bother to take his class...he makes u feel so bad and w/ his smart ass comments, doens't explain stuff instead tells you to move(seat) throughout the semester also his programs will make u sit ur ass in the lab for freaking 20 hrs straight or else ur not passing this class at all. good luck if u take him
Cool Dude! Just get past IT201 C++ and it all down hill from there. Trust me. Hes just weeding out people in IT201.
he's easy if you pay attention.. dont take him if you dont attend class cause you probably wont pass.
Very easy and cool
This dude is whack, but only dude that teaches C++, so anyone majoring in IT is fu**ed. p.s. i dont give a rats arse if he IS weeding ppl out, he sucks.
Easy professor cause he curves the class grade. He is definately not the only professor who teaches C++; not the best C++ professor, but the class is easy. If you just want to get an A and arn't really concerned about learning it then take his class.
Dr. Kalburgi is a great professor. He really knows the subject and is willing to help anyone that's willing to help themselves. If you want to learn and are willing to work for it, take him, you wont regret it!
Great teacher. He may seem like a hard-ass during the first few weeks of IT210, but it's only to weed out the slackers. If you do your work you will be guaranteed an A.
HE IS AWESOME. if you aren't a slacker and you show that you are geniunely interested in his class he will treat you great. if you don't intend to take this class seriously he will grill you every chance he gets--it's really funny. KAL-BUR-GI!
Great teacher. He will fuss at you if you don't pay attention in class. He makes sure that you do the work.
Awesome Professor. Attendance required but you actually learn in class. He teaches very well. Overall very nice and funny guy.
He will allow you to keep doing the assignemtn until you do it right (even past the due date)
Look if you don't like programming and you don't pay attention your going to get that ass grilled son! If you are like me and want to learn this and ask questions he will treat you wonderfully.
If you come to class, you will learn and pass
He is a great professor & will do anything in his power to make sure you understand. His class is difficult but he sets you up for success in all other IT classes. The amount of work you put it in this class is tremendous but you will not have any problems being successful in the other IT class. He makes the other IT classes seem easy. he is the ke
Didn't help me at all. Called me out in front of class and basically made me feel stupid. I absolutely would never take him again ever.
If you take this class in the summer...do not take any others!
VERY hard professor, but a good one! He is also a VERY funny teacher, and laughs funny too! However, his test are no joke!. All ESSAY questions! Imagine Mr. Carraway's class, but harder. If you're a Network Major, good luck to you! but I would recommend him!
Took him for IT416 and 417. All he did was read the slides, NO hands on experience to prepare us for the real IT world. Test are SOO hard!! He's a nice and funny guy though. It would be better if we actually mess with different hardware and software technologies.
Very good teacher. Knows his stuff and makes sure you do to. If you slack off, or don't pay attention in class, he will call you out. He warns at the beginning of the semester about it. You do have to put a bunch of time into the class, but it's well worth it.
Probably one of the nicest professors at ODU. The only thing that I didn't like was his test, bc his test are VERY difficult, but not impossible. You need to STUDY, and hope for a B! Only a couple of people get A's in his class. GOOD LUCK
Good professor, even though he acts as if you're already a programmer and will yell at you if necessary. He helps out a lot if you ask questions. Not very many people get As in his class.
When it comes to programming in C++, if you want to learn it, he will teach you! His class is a little fast paced, with programming project due every weekend. He has about five project Due a semester, and two tests. There is also a project that binds all due project, which is an easy grade, and something of a reference for the student.
He is very good and helpful teacher. He always answered my question and helped me a lot with my programs. His paper test was difficult for me and I failed it because there were too many questions for a short amount of time. But on the second test and the final exam I had "A"s because all you have to do is write a program in class. The program assignmen
He's intimidating at times, but overall he makes sure you know the content.
He's a really laid back teacher. All you do is go through power points, which you can also access on his website. He likes to fry people. His tests are essay based which is hard because its impossible to write a paragraph or more about cable wires! just study and you'll do fine. :)
He assigns a LOT of one-page papers, particularly if he notices people sleeping or spacing out. The lectures are basically going through the PowerPoints, but if IT isn't your strong point, you might want to come to lectures, even though he doesn't take attendance.
Great teacher. He is really hard to understand sometimes (he assumes you're already a programmer) teaching wise, but he keeps going over it until you get it. Very patient and understanding. Tests are difficult, but if you show interest and are willing to work hard you'll be fine.
Best professor I've ever had!
Uh-mazing professor! He does act like you have the mindset of a programmer. Very helpful. Do not text and put your phone on vibrate, on time he answered this guy's phone in the middle of class! LoLz! Take notes or you will regret it, they are great for future reference. Also, keep all the work you do for end of semester project.
He is a great teacher as long as you are willing to put time and effort to do the assignments and practice programs from the class when you get home. Exams are not really hard if you practice the assignments and the problems on the book. He is
He is a great teacher as long as you are willing to put time and effort to do the assignments and practice programs from the class when you get home. Exams are not really hard if you practice the assignments and the problems on the book. He
Class was held on a Monday (first time he moved it to this time slot). Its hard to have a 3 hr class on mondays with all the national holidays. We missed 3 classes due to this so it was EXTREMELY rushed. Nice professor, but expects too much for the exams. hypothetically, he shows us how to build an alternator in class, a motor for exam.
Learn alot from his class. He really makes you a better programmer. You will not regret taking his class. He is a lil harsh if you dont do things his way, but hes trying to show you how to program. I would recommend him! Just keep practicing the programs he shows you & you will do well!
This teacher is extremly intelligent and knowledgable in his field. I highly recommend taking his course. He very straight forward as to what you should learn and what to expect on exams. Do not buythe text. Study the slides and the topics discussed in class & you will do well. TESTS ARE ESSAY FORMAT so know the material. Indian, good english. Fun!
He is very helpful and you always learn a lot in all his classes. He can be tough and moves a little fast, but he always tells you what will be on the test so you can prepare.
Be ready to teach yourself because he is pretty useless when it comes to actually getting help. He will make you think criticaly on his program assignments and expects you to do it his way and only his way. I have managed to get through his class, but unless you are a programmer, you have to be ready to work.
He is a nice guy, However, he just doesn't teach. I took him for IT 416 & 417 and I didnt learn much. We sat in class and did activities out of the book. Most of the students still don't know anything about active directory. ODU really should hire professors that can teach these classes for the specific tracks.
He is a very good professor for C++ programming! However, you as a student must know a lot about C++ programming as well! I recommend that you study C++ programming before taking IT 210 because you are required to think critically for all of the program assignments and exams!
Dont let the name fool you. There is no language barrier. He is a good teacher and you will learn a lot, but he will make you work for your grade. Much of the time, I had to turn to the internet to help with programs. His exams are kinda hard. If you are on the networking path, you will see him again.
Good teacher. He treats class like a structured discussion. The only thing that was pretty rough was that his exams were all essay. Expect easy 1 page homework assigments after most classes.
He is a great professor! He may seem rude and harsh but he does it to push you. I never let him get under my skin it just pushed me to work harder. Read the book and practice practice practice!! Test are a little challenging but I passed the class with a B so it's possible to do well in this class!
The professor can put you on the spot, he walks around looking over your shoulder, but he does it to ensure you know the subject matter. Basically if you show up to class you'll do well in this class. However, if you miss a class, it can be tedious to try to catch up.
Very good teacher, down to earth, textbook is not needed but helpful due to teaching via powerepoint, he's a good teacher, meaning you wont just get a grade you have to show commitment, my seam hard due to the test in essays! only, but if you show inprovement you should be able to pass his class. Good luck,
I say first learn the basics of C++ via youtube before taking his class, that will give you some sort of knowledge before entering, I course is hard very hard and if you slack towards programming you will fail, he's a good teacher but your warned "Its Boot Camp" and hes the drill sergeant so I you study and practice you shall pass, hopefully?
This is a very basic intro course; I'm talking this is a mouse and this is a keyboard. Tests were all essay questions so listen and take notes, pay attention to what he focuses on during lecture, that will be on the test. Additional course work was one-page papers on a topic he focused on, which will be on the test. Super easy class for a Techie!
Dr.K is very nice and easy going in his 400 lvl classes. Most of the class was working in the computer lab doing the book exercise, which I preferred over sitting in class watching him talk. He will provide very little actual help with the activities. His exams are awful. They are 100+ multiple choices that nitpick, but the pp slides will help.
If you have never written code this class may be hard. The book is not needed, you will write code in class. The code written in class is what you will need to know how to use. Do yourself a favor and submit the assignments exactly as he wants, it will make it much easier for you.
I enjoyed taking most of my major IT classes with Dr. Kalburgi, this includes my programming courses as well as IT 416 and IT 417! He made me interested in programming to begin with and for that I thank him! His exams are not easy though, I would suggest that you study for all of those exams!
He knows his stuff but seems to shoot from the hip when giving class. 10 HW case assignments from end of chapters & 2 exams. Exam instructions weren't clear at all. Handed us an EZ1040 and told us to make a program while throughout making it adding/removing things. NOT CLEAR ON REQUIREMENTS! So-so on recommending him. Take someone else if possible.
His IT210 class is really difficult. Hes a laid back guy and really gets you to understand the concepts of basic C++ programming. Coming to class is important, because he definitely keeps a mental note, and if you miss class you will be lost. Textbook isn't needed and all notes are done through in class programs. Really enjoyed his class though!
Dr. Kalburgi is a great teacher. He really knows his stuff. If you go to class and take notes the homework and tests are a breeze. There are 5 homework assignments and four tests.
Kalburgi is a good professor overall. He does have a tough teaching style but this will be to your advantage for the courses following this one. Definitely need to go to class or you will be miserably lost. The material is tough. Recommend that you read up on C++ before taking the course.
Tough subject so you really have to workstudy or else you'd be lost. Do not miss class or you'd be lost also! 4 exams & 5 hw assignemnts (similar to the exams). Does not use Blackboard so keep track of your own grades!
HE STAYS ON ONE SLIDE THE WHOLE CLASS AND ASK QUESTIONS THAT THE CLASS DO NOT KNOW. IF YOUR TAKING AN INTRO CLASS, YOUR THERE TO LEARN ABOUT THE SUBJECT, BUT YET HE TEACHES THE CLASS AS IN IF YOU SHOULD KNOW EVERYTHING ALREADY
It's like boot camp, very tough and kind Professor, he makes sure you that all his students understand C++ programming. I would defiantly take him agin.
Good teacher. Interesting lectures and a pretty fair grader. I would take his classes any time.
Knows his material. You HAVE to attend class or you will get behind. 3 tests and 4 programs. Overall good professor wants you to succeed but have to work for grade. Recommend practicing programs. Ended up with B in class because of 1 bad test grade.
He is one of the best professors at odu. He makes you learn and his style of teaching is very effective (No power points, writes in the board). Even though he doesn't take attendance, you will be lost if you don't show up to class. 4 tests (in class programs) and 7 homework assignments. Tests are similar to the homework.
If you have no prior knowledge of C++ before taking this class, you may run into some trouble. You write the programs as he goes along, but he moves so fast. If he sees that your program doesn't open you'll be sorry. He knows his stuff, but he teaches as if the material is just a refresher. Take over the summer, so this can be your only focus. GL
Only disadvantage is that he doesn't give you a heads-up on what will be covered in class. Otherwise this professor is very knowledgable and pretty straightforward. Tests are based off questions or red highlighted topics found within his lecture PowerPoints. Homework is usually 1 page with single spacing, but the topics he chooses make them simple.
If you haven't done C++ before the class will be a little difficult at first. Going to class helps a lot. If you miss a class you'll be behind. My suggestion is to make friends with students by you because they'll be able to catch you up if you do miss a class. Grading is straight forward. Test are VERY similar to homework assignments.
Hell nah man, this professor was by far the hardest professor I had ever taken in my life and the class was even harder. I hated this class, it was the worst experience of my life, and I ended up dropping. Does the professor care about your grade? Yeah but does he help you fix it? Not really. He isn't that helpful if you don't understand it so no..
Dr. Kalburgi is an awesome professor. He does challenge his students but he helps a lot if you get stuck as well. I hardly used the book but when I did the book didn't really match what we had gone over in the lectures. Just go to class, practice your programming, and PAY ATTENTION and you can pass.
I had him for previous classes and he was a great lecture in those classes. However for this class, it was completely different. There were no lectures, and had us work on the activities in the book. A lot of people i talked to score a 60 and bellow on all of the test(100 questions). The grades from the activities and project are essential to pass.
Good teacher, Kept for getting to release homework. Sounds good but reality is not so much. Released a 15pg group paper right before Thanksgiving, leaving only 3 weeks to complete. Tests feel like Triva rather than practicals. Overall laid back and I liked him.
Despite this being the first programming class you'd take, he still acts like you should know this stuff already somehow. He claims you can do a program in thirty minutes a lot, even though he's the professor. He does a poor job at conveying info you need to pass, if at all. And don't let him see your phone. He throws YOUR PROPERTY in the trash.
I took his online IT 205 class, and it was definitely a mistake. He essentially abandoned the class for the first half of the semester, only showing back up when the Dean spoke with him. His assignments did not follow his syllabus, he tested us on things we hadn't even covered yet, & the homework assignment instructions were poorly articulated.
If you can, stay away from Kalburgi. Not a good professor, nor a good person.
He will abandon your online class just like others said. He is terrible. Doesn't respond to email or calls. We skipped the final 2 modules (like 8 weeks of class) because he never issued assignments for them. Then we got a final project which included material from those 2 modules. Find someone else if you can, I don't know how he is still a prof.
Terrible. Doesnt teach, no lectures, all book work you learn on your own. I wish I could give a negative rating.
Do yourself a favor don't take this class. Dr. K doesn't lecture instead you work out of the book. You'll be lucky if he is even in the classroom 20% of the time. His exams are canned the highest score in class was 80 out of 138. You spend so much time trying to figure out how to do the exercises that you are left with no time to study the material
I can't believe I had to pay for a class where I don't have a professor and 100% of the work is from a book. I pretty much paid to let a professor who does not care about anything give me 138 question tests with extremely detailed information from a textbook. What a joke.
I do not understand how he is still allowed to teach at this school. You will never know your grade because it takes him 2-3 months to grade any assignment. He is extremely rude to his students and then complains why nobody shows up to his classes or does well. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time or money.
If I had the choice if taking this class again or spending my life working at McDonalds making minimum wage, Id choose McDonalds.
If you know your way around Windows Server you will be fine, if not AVOID his class. The syllabus says attendance is mandatory but the prof is very seldomly in class. You have to teach yourself how to do the work from the books. The tests are like a certification test, very long and hard. Finals are over and he still hasn't graded any assignments.
He can be an hardass, but if you try and do your work, he is pretty good. scares alot of people who are trying the IT program though.
Dr. Kalburgi is superb. I learned Java and it's amazing. He's understanding and takes time to make sure you understand. My mom had a stroke early in the semester and he worked with me and inspired me in the process. He's comical and some may think that he's mean but that isn't true. Excellent professor to have. Don't use your phone during class.
I had a networking background so this class was easy. If you don't have experience then I'd recommend to actually read the book because students skip over them. The professor responds back when help is needed. Not an easy subject, study and youll do well. Two tests, one final, and one big project.
The class has 4-5 programming assignments, a midterm and a final. Final has three programming parts. Will need to spend some time researching the material since the class is only. He's not a harsh graded so that's a plus. He leaves his number where students can call and ask for help or set up a zoom call. Don't see why you wouldn't get an A.
This class was difficult, simply put. The midterm and final were originally supposed to be multiple choice, but it changed into making a program (the final was three parts!). We also did not do the last two modules of the class; for this reason I am glad that this class does not connect with anything else I have to take. Didn't learn much honestly.
The "hands on" assignments 4-10 were not graded until after the final exam due date. The exams are nothing like the hands-on/quizzes but count for 75% of total final grade. The case analysis is graded harshly and difficult due to the lack of feedback from the earlier assignments. A textbook is suggested for certification, but not for the grade
Avoid like the plague.
You'll be left to study the book on your own. Dont expect him to give projects or homework on time. Promised to upload PowerPoint slides but didn't. The group project, 15 page single-spaced, wasn't given until mid November, even though he said half the semester to work on it. The midterm wasn't given until after the promised date.
We didn't hear from him for weeks at a time. Told us to read the chpts then four weeks before class was scheduled to end, he gave us our lab assignments- 13 chpts worth and told us to submit screenshots of our works. A single PDF worth of screenshots could be up to 30 pages long, more if you include descriptions of each step. This class was a mess.
-Midterm, no study guide, HALF of grade weight, no prior quizzes or info -Practically invisible/absent -Emails are ghosted -All assignments textbook -No online option existing -SURPRISE massive 30-page project at the end of the semester, with no prior notification on syllabus -Waste of time/money and not worth the GPA hit even with hard effort
Worst Professor I have come across at ODU. No communication from him, he ignored student emails, texts, etc. Students had to email several people above him to get things graded and have communication. Writing this during finals week which he has still given us no information about and has not graded 5 assignment and our last exam. DO NOT TAKE.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Not at all responsive to emails. After break only 2 assignments graded-impossible to know where you stand through the entire course. Very disappointing. Canvas page DISORGANIZED-esp. for an IT prof. Due dates are unclear and mess with the calendar. No idea how he has been allowed to continue like this.
Listen to me when i tell you this. This is by far the absolute worst professor at ODU, regardless of subject. He does not respond to your emails, grades everything the absolute last day of classes, has lazy and terribly boring lectures, and is very strict with his grading. I would rather extend my graduation date than take any course by him again.
too much work
Professor does nothing but grade work late, and strictly. The "lessons" are old regurgitated schlock ripped off the internet, as are the discussions and tests. He knows this too, forcing his students to download literal spyware because he is so paranoid of you finding the exact replica of his tests online. You will not be taught in this class.
This professor is hit-or-miss. Lectures can be dull, but the material is manageable with the textbook. Using Unstuckstudy and attending study sessions helped me prepare for the exams. Overall, the class is doable if you put in the work.
The class itself is pretty easy but he doesn't really teach. He puts programs up on the board and just has you copy them down as you follow along. He gets easily annoyed when you ask him questions and a lot of times he'll just expect you to know things without having taught it. Lots of quizzes but every single answer is just A for all of them.
