Attendence is mandatory, very boring teaching style and does not use the expensive book at all, DON'T EVEN BUY IT!
Dr. Jain really cares about his students. He was always available to help us when we got stuck with our website project at the last moment. We were expecting a very low grade but he did not penalize us for the website issues. Take him!!!
He is a little hard to understand but hes so damn gorgeous it really makes up for it
Dr. Jain did an unbelievably good job of answering any questions we had.
Prof. Jain is very helpful and will try to answer all questions you have. His test are straight from the practice test and projects are not hard. For a crappy subject, he makes it decent
Jain is really passionate about ITM, he can get a little boring though with his slides. Do the practice exam and the tests will be no problem. As long as you copy the directions for the projects you will be fine. Jain is def. one of the best professors for ITM!
Professor did an excellent lecture. He did not just read off of his powerpoints. He explained the material and conducted a discussion with the class. He tried to help the students develop their communication skills while teaching the course subject.
I liked the personal feedback I got in the class. It was great. It helped a lot. I saw what mistakes I made and could fix them for the project. Definitely recommend.
HE IS GOOD CLASS IS BORING DO THE PRACTICE AND ATTEND ALL CLASS HE LOVE HIS CLASS SO TRY TO LOVE IT TOO
Jain loves teaching. He makes the class very interesting although the subject is boring. If you study the practice tests and go to his office for help there is no reason why you can't get an A. He understands students very well and is not there to trick you or make you not get an A. He finds joy in seeing us succeed. Also make sure you pick your gr
The explanations provided by this professor for a course like statistics are amazing. I was not sure initially but after this class, I feel pretty confident of statistics.
Dr. Jain is not easy in terms of grading but he considers your case sympathetically if you are on the border between two grades. He is an excellent professor, though.
Good teacher; probably the best ITM 220 teacher (that isn't saying much). Class is boring, tests are easy. MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD GROUP!!! There are a ton of group assignments. If your group sucks(in my case)you won't get a good grade. If your group is good, you will get a good grade. Take this class with some hardworking friends.
Jain is one of the best profs I have had in a long time
This is the first class where I felt that a professor really cares about his students. I learned more in this course than what I expected to learn in the beginning. Dr. Jain is truly amazing.
Prof. Jain keeps the class interesting even though class is tough and sometimes boring. He makes it easy by giving enough practice problems and helps you work through them during his office hours. Nice professor to take this course with.
he's really hard guys, sometimes gives curves, his expectation are so high for his classes , i dunno he's tough on us, careful about attendance , participation, i know him very well u have my word !!!!!
Dr. Jain rocks.
Excellent professor! He has very high expectations for all his students, but that is the way every professor should be. ITM 318 is a lot of work and he lets you know that right from the start. He is extremely helpful and encourages you to go to his office hours. Without a doubt the best professor I've had.
Very smart, good professor, but you'd better have a lot of time on your hands...because you're going to be doing a lot of homework and studying for his exams. He has very high expectations for his students.
Guys Listen, for ITM 210 , i had him in a summer class, it was a joke i almost hanged my self, he believes that the whole book is supposed to be taught in summer classes nothing skipped ! ow and we had quizzes everyclass ! attenting is important he takes of grades ! quizzes are not easy ! exam are not easy, really cares about attendence
Do not buy the book, it is not useful and expensive, every one said he is a good professor, yes that's might be for some courses but not ITM 318, most the grades in C's & D's. do not get too excited
his professor is VERY bright and VERY knowledgeable in this subject. He does a great job in teaching this subject because of his experience and expertise. He is brilliant and has a great insight in this subject.
The professor has lots of enthusiasm for the subject and is knowledgeable in the area with real world experience and a excellent method for teaching.
People says this professor is hard on grading. but I have seen this professor giving many chances to improve the grade.
Is this professor tough? Definitely. He makes you work hard but learn a lot in this class. Very helpful outside the class.
Very clear on amount of work involved in the course. Those who get Cs in his course are the ones who do not want to work. I am at A grade in his class. Yes, he demands work but is very helpful.
thank god i finished this class, anyway looking at several comments (ratings) i think this professor rates him self ! i know how he uses phrases and words like the word "Confident about statistics" and straight from practice exams , these were always his words
the course is hard, it is also hard to teach this course. You really need to read the material many time to understand.
Very bad professor, does not know how to teach the course, he grades based on judgment. Not fair at all, and he takes some problems personally. not recommended at all, but he is the only one who teach the class.
I'm taking it this summer and so far the guy is great, really. The last comments are were probably from people whom had no drive or desire to learn in college to begin with. This man is brilliant and rarely isn't helping you or smiling. Difficult class, surely, bad teacher, false. If you put the effort in, you will get the grade you deserve.
This guy is HARD! I needed to take ITM210 during the summer, and this guy was the only one available. While he genuinely wants all his students to learn the information it's VERY difficult to follow and retain most of his lectures. I would not recommend him for this subject. I plan on retaking this class for an A next fall semester.
Dr. Jain's Stats class is a double-edged sword- his tests and the work you do in this class will most likely be extremely hard (I know it was for me), but at the same time- he is willing to help you out as much as he can. If I had the choice, I would not have taken his class, especially during summer when the pace is just impossible to follow.
Dr. Jain was a very nice professor. I agree taking this course in summer is VERY fast paced, but I think he did the best he could in the 6 weeks we had. He cares about his students, always willing to help. Gave generous curves on tests and extra credit. Definitely recommend him! He made a hard subject (stats) a little bit more easy to understand.
If you want to learn something, take him. If you are just looking for a grade/easy class, he is not your guy.
This guy is so easy to talk to. He responds to email so quickly. I did not have to go to his office hours to get my doubts clear.
Prof. Jain is demanding but is very helpful if you go to his office. He will work with you on homework or exam questions.
He is a great professor! The class is very fast-paced and difficult at times but he did everything he could to help the class out with work. He is very particular about how you do his assignments but it's definitely a good class to take.
This guy is fantastic.
The class itself is tough and fast paced. But if you attend every class and keep up with the project you will do fine. He gives a quiz once a week and gives out practice quizzes and test to study from to make it easier. He gives extra credit too! Like he says you need to work for your grade.
You need to work hard to get a good grade in this class.
He is demanding, He doesn't explain himself, ask questions and he will single you out and answer by repeating himself. Never expect to leave early EVER he will run through time and find things for you to do even though the lessons are over. Thankfully there's tutoring at this school but that will only help if you get a good tutor.
This professor is really helpful if you ask for help. I have been to his office many times and he always takes time to explain.
This professor is really good. Takes time to go over stuff when you go see him.
Just finished this class! Dr. Jain is a great guy. Initially the workload was too much but Dr. Jain listened to his students and made the class more accommodating. Prepare to work a lot ITM 318 is no joke. Dr. Jain is always willing to help during office hours, or by phone/skype. You cant go wrong, if you work hard and go to class! Cheers
Great professor, very helpful, will learn many things in his class, Not an Easy class, lots of quizez , exams. no hw"s. If your intersted in Itm210 then take him if your looking for an easy class then dont.
lots of work with low reward...extremely hard, discouraging and he is sensitive and will freak out at the the class atleast twice a month.. not quite sure how these other reviews are so good
Class project is an insane amount of work. Assigns a class project which covers the entire course, a homework assignment covering two chapters, and a final exam all within a few days of each other. Extremely unreasonable. Might be do-able for part-time students but not students who are taking 3-4 other courses. This guy is NUTS. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Jain is an unprofessional professor who takes his personal emotions out on his classes and wouldnt care if all his classes failed. Terrible, terrible, terrible
worst class I have ever taken
He was plain horrible. He will arbitrarily subtract points from tests and not explain why. Any subjective grades (ie projects) are distributed based on how much he likes you. Never, EVER, try to demonstrate a different way of doing something that works, unless you want to be ostracized for the rest of the semester. Terrible class and instructor.
If there is any way to avoid taking him, do it. He is the worst professor I have ever had. He tells you the way he wants the homework to be done, and when you do it that way he marks it wrong. I went to him for help and he was useless. AVOID him
go to his office hours and he is helpful.
Incredibly difficult and extremely fast paced class. Must be quite proficient with math and excel to stay afloat. However, he grades on a curve.
Very intelligent professor. Passionate about IT.
So passionate about statistics. Hard but fair.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Avoid taking him at all cost. Not clear with explanations, harsh grader, keeps you the full time (night class) and very arrogant. He clearly writes some of the ratings on this site.
Dr. Jain is excellent. I'm providing this positive review because I saw the repeated poor comments (from last year) obviously created by one immature and sad student who thinks he's getting even by giving multiple ratings of "1, 1, 1" . I am so tired of my fellow childish students--they don't come to class then whine when they get a poor grade.
Very helpful when you go and see him during office hours
Learned so much in his class.
HW, exams, essays & 3-4 ppl group project. Project 3 phases, 2 presentations, total output- 50 to 100+ pages of work. Per the professor, you cannot (at least no one has) received a good grade without consistently meeting him outside the class (weekly). Expect a low grade CD if you do not. Doing the work is not good enough. Not clear, slow grader
He is tough but fair. Expect to work a lot.
One of the best professors for statistics class.
Dr. Jain does an excellent job of explaining some of the concepts in a fashion that you can understand. He likes people who are inquisitive in class. If confused, do your participation grade a favor and ask questions. Bottom line: Do your practice problems, seek help if you are confused, and go to class. You aren't going to learn from the book.
He was actually a chill professor for an early class. We barely went to class because we had alot of one on ones
The group project is a majority of your grade so choose wisely when picking a group. The group project will consume about 10 hours a week easily and his exams will take about 20 hours. You will have to go to office hours and very unclear of what is expected. His grading is subjective on your critical thinking. There is no clear solution.
ITM 318 is the best class for ITM majors. This class is prepared to help you succeed. but, Dr. Jain makes the class overly difficult. Granted, the class is tough and the material is hard to explain. Dr. Jain will make assignments due at the start of class rather than at 11:59PM. I do not understand why this is when things aren't graded for weeks!
Makes your hard for your grade. Goof teacher though.
Great Professor. Funny. Demands work. knows his subject.
Explains the material in a good way to some extent. Even if you do pay attention, there will be a 5 to 15 point question exam that he didn't discuss in class
The professor did not know the material well enough to explain it in basic terms. throughout the semester he would run through the powerpoints(Which aren't his own work) and bring questions on the exams that were nothing like what we did (in class or in the text). His grading criteria is impossible to satisfy and you'd be lucky to get out with a B.
This is an amazing professor. I got an A in the class and learnt best from this professor.
Dr. Jain is a good guy and clearly cares about stats and his students. This is a difficult subject for anyone, but Dr. Jain often taught knowing that students did not understand what was going on. He offered some extra credit, but there was too much work involved in this getting a good grade in this class considering it is a 200-level course.
Tough but fair. Best for statistics class.
I would recommend taking this course with anybody but Dr. Jain. He is condescending (without even knowing it) and truly fails to teach Statistics in an effective manner. Unrealistic expectations, I spent 8-10 hours studying per week and he still made things more confusing. Course caused me more stress than all of my other classes combined.
I took SAP workshop with him in May term. He is fantastic in explaining the concepts. I passed the exam with really high score.
Great professor.
If you are taking QMB500, good luck! You are going to need it. Toughest professor I've ever dealt with. Be prepared to stress out every two weeks. The tests are very hard and even though I've studied 20 hours weekly, I barely got enough to pass this class.
Here's the secret to getting an A in his class: GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Don't ask him questions over email, don't ask him questions in class, don't catch him after class ends. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS FOR ALL QUESTIONS AND YOU WILL PASS. He grades subjectively on how much effort he perceives. The best way to show effort is during office hours.
If I were to turn back time, I would have taken another professor. He literally does not respond to my emails, and one time I emailed him for help with a homework and he never responded. His tests are hard. Really hard. He is a nice guy, but I would never take him again.
Funny. Accommodating to your requests. Gives review exam and actual exam is similar to review exam.
Good professor but really hard
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had at UT. He encouraged students to participate, but made fun of the class when the wrong answer was suggested. The course project was horrendously difficult. The exams were ridiculously challenging, and not representative of the practice we did in class. Help yourself, take someone else...
Does not lecture. Lazy and uses past "recorded lectures" hours long and makes us watch it outside of class. In class, he doesn't lecture. Doesn't teach. I think the class would be bearable if he actually TAUGHT
Horrible Teacher. Doesn't teach and is lazy. Would rather have students watch old lecture videos than actually teach in class.
Good professor.
I would recommend you to take him for summer if you absolutely have to take his class. during the semester he gives so much work you go into depression. he's a very tough grader and his exams are difficult. That being said, if you are well versed in the subject, you watch all his videos and practice problems, you stand a chance to get an A
I only go to lecture to listen him read the power point and it was not even clear. When student asked questions in class he would not answer and sarcastically tell you to ask classmate. Worst professor I ever take at UT. The lectures did not help with anything on the exam. I went to his office hour to find help he simply tell me to redo assignment
You have to work hard. Fair. Does help when you go see him during office hours.
Not a bad professor.
Makes your work really hard. Provides good explanation.
Easy material made difficult through confusing pretense.
Best for online classes. Videos are super helpful. Other instructors are not so helpful.
The entire class is contingent on 3 tests worth 100 points each. Because of Coronavirus it is an online course with at least 16 hours of work outside of the 4 hour class meetings on Zoom once a week where he reiterates exactly what he talks about in his posted videos. He doesn't curve tests even though the average is 74% and is very condescending.
He is very knowledgeable professor. Subject matter is tough for non stats background students. Keeping all the factors in mind he should test the students accordingly. Instead, he conducts only 3 tests with lots of tricky questions and test pattern is also very tough. Dont take this subject for shorter term. Its very difficult to get through.
His lecture videos are super helpful.
This class was really overwhelming for me. I think it is because of stats being difficult. I had to withdraw and take it again because of the difficulty. It was dragging my other subjects down. During the spring semester, there's a ton load of work to do to a point you feel like you're drowning. The professor is okay, he helps you when you ask.
Honestly I cried a few times but Dr. Jain is an amazing professor. You will have to spend a lot of time out of class if you want a good grade. He is very accessible outside of classes and truly cares that you understand the material. He wants students to succeed.
worst professor I have had at UT to date. He is very strict and boring and refused to make the class any easier despite most of the class failing his tests. Laughs at students when they do not understand something or give wrong answers.
Professor is well organized, this course had a lot of work, 5 exams, group project, long presentation, participation points were conducted; lots of reading and homework. Responds quickly to emails, provides feedback. Class was too demanding, Grading is harsh and strict. Must have a windows computer to conduct the HW assignments.
He is mentally inflexible and defensive. Students with intrinsic desire to learn will get tired of his ego. Those who never ask "why" have a chance. I transferred out of UT and got A's in more rigorous stats at USF. If you're forced to expose your mind to his dissonance, just smile and wave. That's what my academic advisors told me, but I couldn't
This is the WORST professor I have had at UT. He makes the content very confusing and his exams are difficult with confusing questions. If several students in the class do not have a stats background, shouldn't you take that into consideration and not make things unnecessarily difficult?
Not a good professor, doesn't really care about students at all and makes everything complicated for no reason.
He is so rude and not helpful. Had him for BAC 102 and he literally asked me if I had any friends or ever did anything fun because I am quiet and on top of my things. He took pictures of us on his personal phone too which was super weird and uncomfortable. He tried being funny by saying he would lock the class in the room until we talked more.
I once was very young and naive, just like most of the people reading the previous comments & still deciding whether or not to take his class, but now I speak to you through the perspective of an elder classmate; be wise and listen to this: DO NOT TAKE HIM WHATSOEVER. This is the worst class I've ever taken, and I should have listened to my elders
awful
Good professor. Explains everything.
He is not that bad. If you talk to him, he helps you a lot.
Don't take him if you want to pass. He can't teach!
Not recommended! Take class with other instructors if you want better learning.
The worse teacher in UT!
His exams are tough but he is fair. Explains well.
first off the class was a waste of time. he tries to make it seem like it is but it isn't. he also didn't have a plan for class half the time and just wasted time trying to make conversation. he takes photos of all of his students and makes comments about how you look in the picture which is weird. he also waits to the last minute to grade.
He is amazing in explaining the concepts. His videos are super helpful.
He is an amazing professor but you have to study a lot. He'll explain concept but you should learn it and use it to solve problems in exam. Just practicing doesnt get you good grade in his course, You have to understand the concept by heart to solve his problems in exams. if you mug up this isnt a class for you if you understand concept take him.
Great guy
He is a wonderful professor.
He is an amazing professor,BUT his quizzes and the exams are extremely difficult and tricky, The exams have some questions that are misleading this is not an easy class, you need to study a lot, he is a wonderful teacher but when it comes to quizzes and exams is extremely difficult and sometimes unfair, there's a clear difference in the exercises.
I would not recommend taking a class with Vikas Jain. His English is full of mistakes, and he doesn't describe ideas well. It's hard to understand what he's saying, and every sentence he says sounds like a question. It's worse than a monotone voice. He should not have been hired for a job that requires speaking. I regret paying for his class.
Extremely boring class. He is not teaching at all. Worst course at the school, from my experience. Professor has a lot of ego. The school should fire him immediately. No professor would be much, much better than this one. Trust me, he is painful to work with.
Horrible professor. He didn't grade a single assignment for over a month. I don't know if I'm failing or passing. He speaks too slowly. He should learn English before teaching anything. Very boring. When you ask him for help, he rants, instead of helping. Waste of time talking to him. Horrible experience. Please drop his courses.
Bad professor
Difficult but we can gain knowledge
He is good and passionate about statistics. You can learn a lot if you care.
Professor Jain knows the material well, but his exams can be tricky. Definitely need to understand the concepts, not just memorize. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for practice problems - highly recommend it alongside the free textbook.
The hardest class I have ever taken. Practice problems are nothing like the test. Had an exam where half the class got a trick question and the other half got an “easy” question. Not fair at all
He gives test every week. Tests are similar to what he covers in the class.
