Very helpful professor and straight to the point. Always there when you need her, sincerely cares about her students. A real asset to U of t!!
Lectures were sometimes a bit convoluted (maybe some overheads or powerpoint slides would have helped to remember all the different interpretations?) but very helpful and engaging. Great prof.
Lectures were sometimes a bit simplistic and it was a bad idea to try to grade us on participation in such a huge class. However she lectured very clearly, communicated her expectations well, and showed real enthusiasm for the texts and concern for her students.
Very concise and knowledgeable. Very available if you needed help. She's no creampuff - she is very clear and expects you to understand what you have to do to get a good grade. If you do it, you will get it. Arthritis-inducing notes.
she reads from her notes most of the time, though that's not entirely bad, it could get a little dry at times. she has great knowledge about the material and i must admit that i do like her sense of humor.
Wicked prof. Clear, organized lectures. You're always able to follow her. Interesting material too, especially if you're an English major. And, yes, she's hilarious. Nothing dry about these lectures.
I really enjoy her. I don't mind that she reads for notes...it makes it clearer. She's definately always willing to help and she can really funny. Who doesn't love an Aussie??
Visvis was one of the best professors ive ever had! her lectures present so many interesting ideas about the work. i loved going to class to see the spin she would put on the material. She is clear because she uses her notes and she clearifies main ideas after. she's funny and helpful and everything anyone would want in a prof. She's great!
Best Professor I have ever had. Her Lectures are incredibly organized, engaging and thoughtful. She makes a lot of connections between material and the detail in her lectures allows for a great starting point to engage in a more critical reading of the novel in the future. A+++ It's too bad she's not teaching more courses! U of T give her more!!!
She really is a great prof. Very smart and genuinely cares about her students. I really enjoyed the course.
Very down to earth and helpful. Cute accent.
Engaging professor and very insightful. Encourages students to participate in class and will not shoot down your opinions. Is very likeable and approachable. Her grading is very fair and most likely if you read the books and show up to lecture, you'll do well. Also, hearing an Australian accent every morning is fun too!
Very approachable, friendly and helpful. Lectures dry at times but clear and generally concise.
Great prof! Clear and really interesting (even at 9 in the morning). Always there when you need her. Highly recommend this prof.
I agree; her lectures were very stimulating. Her interpretations of the works were really insightful and unexpected. I really hadn't thought about the novels that way before. She's also very organized and clear. Overall, she's an open and dedicated professor, who makes it very easy to feel involved in the course.
Loved her! Her classes were engaging and insightful. Using notes helped her stay on topic and well organized. She was opinionated while still being open to others, never being discouraging. She was extremely helpful when you needed it and she was pretty funny. Loved her sense of humour and her ability to engage with the class. Highly recommended!
Probably one of the best English professors you will ever have, especially at U of T. Very insightful, and always willing to talk about any problems you might be having with the course or the material. She really knows what she is talking about and always makes discussion interesting instead of grating, rare in the English department.
I find myself well prepared for examinations and essays. Super approachable- offers extra help and extra end of your review. She pretty much does everything she can as a prof. for you, the student, to do well.
Nicest prof ever. Lol. i did great without reading all the novels. Her lecture notes are extremely helpful to do well in course!
She is an AMAZING professor! Her lectures are so organized and full of insightful ideas. You should be well-prepared for the examinations if you attend the lectures. She's always open to office hours, and decides the final mark for everything even after the TA marks it just to be fair. A very fair and clever professor!
Visvis is the best English Prof at UofT! They need to make her tenure ASAP because she is a real asset. Her lectures are fantastic, she is always available to her students, and she honestly cares about our well being. Oh, and she has a WICKED sense of humor! :)
Awesome prof!!! Really smart. Lectures were always detailed and organized. Also, probably one of kindest people you'll ever meet--heart of gold. Loved her.
Dr. Visvis is by far one of the best instructors you will ever have at UofT. She is extremely well read, kind, approachable, funny, and she honestly cares about her students. Her lectures are always very insightful and she is always open minded to students' opinions. Her classes are a must-take!
Visvis is by far one the the BEST instructors you will EVER have. Her lectures are always insightful, interesting, and include many perspectives. She is kind, open minded, and very approachable. She cares about her students and will do everything in her power to assist them. Not to mention she has a great sense of humor and is super nice :)
Nicest, most helpful and most intelligent professor I have ever had. Take her class!
Visvis is by far the BEST Prof I have EVER had. Her classes are insightful, interesting, and she creates an open learning environment for all of her students. She is super approachable, kind, and has a wicked sense of humor! TAKE HER CLASS!
Incredibly helpful and insightful. Will give thorough feedback on tests and essays. Interesting topics and analysis. Fair marker.
BEST OF THE BEST! TAKE HER CLASS! BEST PROF AT UOFT!
if you see any course with her name on it, take it and be a lucky one. she is an amazing prof who actually teaches and cares about her students. i am even willing to take a freakin' poetry course if she is the one teaching it because i trust her. i am glad i met such a great prof in my school years.
She is AMAZING! Very kind and helpful and fair marker. The best prof I have EVER had!
Best professor I have ever had! She is helpful, insightful and genuinely cares about her students. Extensive feedback on essays and assignments, willing to share her notes when I was sick and missed a class. I will take every course she teaches!
She lectures too much and could benefit from letting students voice their own opinions of the texts. A lot of us disagreed with the things she said in lectures, and her interpretations felt repetitive and too simple and didn't always even directly deal with the text. She also stopped caring bout the class after first sem, and you could tell.
Seriously, she's awesome. I was really nervous about going to her office hours, and she helped me so much when I did. I agree--this person got a bad mark and is venting. This is a really good prof. (And I actually love her interpretations of the texts...Am learning so much in this course)
Amazing professor. Honest, clear and consistent. She's very intelligent and makes you feel intelligent too as she's genuinely interested in your ideas. The class is small and intimate, but you can walk in an hour late and she'll still greet you warmly. Again, amazing and actually learned so much.
I know, she's amazing. Her readings of the novels are *so* thorough. She writes the page references on the board, and the board is always full. Her lectures are very focused, and the weekly outlines make sure we stay on topic and on text. She's great, and a lot of us think so. (You can tell because the class is always full, even on nice days!)
She really is great and so nice. I've learned so much in her course. Her use of literary theory to explain the novels is unbelievably relevant, and so helpful. Her interpretations are very insightful. And, she's always there when you need her. She got back to me in lightening speed over Reading Week, when she was in Australia! It's clear she cares.
Actually, a lot of us completely agree with the things she says in lecture. Her interpretations are not repetitive and simple. Her lectures are always relevant. And, she clearly cares about the class, in both first and second sem. And, yes, you could tell. (The comments of one disgruntled student do not speak for all of us).
Wow, Iâ??m glad thereâ??s been such an outpouring of support for this prof because she really deserves it. Prof Visvis, if you read this, donâ??t worry about it. Iâ??m in that class, and I think we all know who the mean girl is. While we wait for her to figure it out, please accept our thanks for all your hard work this year. We really appreciate it!
Amazing professor. She's kind, organized, smart, and funny. You get detailed feedback on all assignments (it's clear she reads everything carefully, and her suggestions are amazing). Lectures are so interesting. Learned so much in this course. Take her class. She's worth it.
Prof. Visvis is amazing! Lectures are really detailed, and she is consistently nice and helpful. Take her course!
I've had the pleasure of having Prof Visvis for two courses this year, and she has been fantastic in both. Her lectures are informative, and her readings of the novels are always detailed. She keeps the class light and fun, and she is always ready to greet you with a smile. Great professor.
Prof Visvis is a very enthusiastic lecturer. She knows and enjoys the material she lectures on and engages with her students and encourages them to participate. She's well organized and presents the material in a very clear way. This course has been by far one of the most enjoyable English courses I have taken.
Easily one of the best teachers I've had in 4 years. Absolutely awesome course material. She loves the material as much as I do, and is really working hard to make us understand the work. Fair, good humoured, humble, funny, helpful, not intimidating, easy to talk to, smart and insightful. Overall, great prof.
Incredibly thorough teacher. Very passionate and dedicated. All in all, a wonderful prof.
This prof has done a vast amount of research for the course. She displays great interest in the course material, and presents it in a clear way. She makes sure our questions are answered, and encourages participation in an open, effective manner. It's also nice to see a professor who's interested in the material and teaching.
Prof Visvis always makes herself available for questions and discussion out of class. Her lectures are easy to follow and she uses outlines to show the topics she will be covering. The material is always applicable, enjoyable, and relevant.
She was fabulous and certainly made the course enjoyable. The coherence and well planned lectures were particularly good. Her outlines were indepth and greatly aided the learning experience. I would definitely take any course she teaches!
Awesome prof!
Prof Visvis is a kind, attentive, dedicated teacher who is passionate about the material she teaches. She always makes herself available to students, and puts enormous work into her lectures. Great prof.
LOVED her! I never thought I'd enjoy Canadian Fiction as much as I did. She's wonderful: clear, funny, calm, understanding, and also really pretty, which is a nice bonus. Take her classes!
Smart and dedicated prof. Really helpful when you ask for advice too. Gave me really great feedback for the essay. Take her course!
She is easily brilliant. So clear in everything she teaches. I learned so much from her.
Professor Visvis is very knowledgeable and dedicated. She gives very thorough lectures and feedback on essays and exams. Helpful, calm and kind - she wants her students to do well and does everything she can to support your learning. Great Prof!!
She is one of the best professors I've had! Absolutely amazing, stimulating lectures and extremely knowledgeable.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! She is so kind and engaging as a lecturer. She is very down to earth and funny, and she always makes the class feel engaged with lots of discussions.
Best prof this year. So kind. So helpful. Crystal clear lectures, well organized and on topic. Engaging speaker. Prepares you well for assignments and exams...all you have to do is attend class and read her slides. I am fortunate enough to have her for eng252 as well. Take any class you can with this terrific prof. So glad she came to TO.
This woman is truly inspiring. Aside from being attractive, funny, kind and approachable, she is an inspiring speaker, and even though the class ran 6-9pm i never wanted to miss it because i loved sitting there and hearing her speak. She's truly wonderful, and explains in great detail many different aspects of each reading. Prepares you well.
As a commuter attending early classes are usually a drag. This class was so engaging I didn't ever regret waking up early to make my commute down. She is a very engaging and interesting prof. Her lectures are so in depth, which made writing the essays and studying for the exam a lot easier in comparison to other courses I have taken.
A must take! Sometimes the material can be more complicated, but it is never overwhelmingly difficult. Professor Visvis is, in my experience, the most caring, articulate, and welcoming professor at the university.
Prof Visvis made this class amazing! She was extremely well organized and took the time to back up her points and opinions with evidence. She answered questions well, even those that opposed her view, and she took the time to listen. This was my favourite class because of her!
AMAZING. Her feedbacks are really detailed and helpful and they actually make you write better. She is super approachable, very organized, good-humoured, good-hearted, and a wonderful person. I took two courses with her, one of which happened to be Canadian Poetry course. I hate poetry, but I took the course because she was the prof for the course.
Best professor so far! Wish she could teach all my classes. Very clear, with insightful and well-thought out lectures that can only be boring to those with no appreciation of literature. This professor teaches. If you're looking for a class to chill or nap in, don't bother filling up the space-someone else deserves it.
Kind, smart and well versed in her subject. (Maybe from teaching the course so many years!) Unfortunately lectures were simplistic (you even get the outlines to her notes) and participation was not as welcome as I like, especially if you disagree with her interpretation. Fair, maybe even easy grader.
I really like this course and this prof a lot! I appreciate the outlines. The lectures are really detailed and interesting. The outlines help me stay on track. She's clear, not simplistic. She also checks all the TA's marks to make sure the grading is fair for everyone. And, she listens to students, even in a class of 200. Great prof!
Prof Visvis is a wonderful instructor. I always find her to be interesting and knowledgeable. She presents the course material in an entertaining and engrossing way, and the class overall is a highly rewarding and enjoyable experience. Her lecture outlines also help a great deal and make everything easily understandable.
Professor Visvis is outstanding, one of the most approachable and enjoyable professors I have had at U of T. Her lectures were very clear, well paced, and structured with weekly outlines that I found very helpful. She was open to questions and she takes the time to read through each essay once the TA has already marked it to be fair. Great prof!
Awesome prof! Really interesting, detailed lectures. Great class discussions--very open to all opinions. You don't have to agree with her. She just keeps the discussion focused and relevant. Really good marker. Not a pushover, but very fair. All round great experience. Take her course!
I have Dr. Visvis for both Canadian Lit and Foundations of Written Discourse and she is the best professor/human being that I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. Her lectures are always incredibly engaging, clear, helpful and witty. She does an excellent job of balancing humor and information, capturing the classe's attention completely.
Prof. Visvis is such a wonderful teacher and person. Her lectures are always extremely insightful and thought-provoking, and her lovely personality never fails to shine through every time. Even outside of class she tries her best to help her students succeed. You couldn't ask for a better prof, which is why I highly recommend any of her classes!
Rarely stepped out from behind her podium, and offered dull predictable analysis of texts. That said, her lectures were clear and she seemed very nice...
I really liked this course and this prof....I found her lectures so interesting. She's consistently good, and the material is unexpected and smart. I learned so much. Thanks Prof. Visvis!
Professor Visvis is an excellent instructor, who made Canadian literature very accessible. She gave wonderful and engaging lectures with detailed explanations of ideas. Professor Visvis kept me interested and I really enjoyed listening to her. Her lectures were well-paced, fun, and never boring!
Loved this prof. It’s a large group lecture (about 200 students), so it was harder to feel connected to the material. But, I really appreciated how much she tried to keep students engaged. She used the podium multimedia a lot. I especially appreciated her projecting all the page references on the screen! Interesting, organized, and nice prof.
Prof. Visvis's lectures were very stimulating. She presented passion about each of the works and made us think critically about what and how we read. I always felt that I had a much better understanding of the works by attending her lectures than I would have been able to achieve on my own. She made me appreciate Canadian literature so much more!
This course was great. Lectures were always engaging and interesting. She approached the works from multiple perspectives, providing us with context on modern literary criticism. Always available to meet during office hours or any other time. Responds to emails promptly and with helpful feedback. Overall, the instruction was excellent!
Professor Visvis is awesome. She's very well-spoken, funny and clear. She took subjects that could have easily put me to sleep, like settler journals, and made them very modern and relevant, which is no easy task. Basically, she made the course material complex and interesting but still accessible to her students. She is a great professor!
Professor Visvis was a fabulous instructor who provided a great learning environment and a wonderful interpretation on the course texts. She clearly puts a lot of preparation into each lecture, and her lecture style is great. She discusses the material thoroughly, was very engaging, and communicated effectively. Take her course!
Excellent instructor. Her lectures are clear, concise and really add to the readings.
Prof. Visvis was extremely insightful as a professor. She did a wonderful job taking material I wasn't initially that enthusiastic about, and making me see it in a new light. She approached all the works carefully, and interpreted them in the most interesting way. I thoroughly enjoyed having her as a professor.
Professor Visvis is truly amazing! Her lectures are so easy to follow and she really knows how to engage her students. I didn't have high hopes for enjoying this class, but it turned out to be really interesting.
Prof. Visvis is great. I found her lectures to be both informative and entertaining. She creates a really nice environment, and she offered really interesting readings into various aspects of the texts. Very helpful and kind!
Such a great prof. Interesting readings and lectures. Always there when you need her!
Prof. Visvis is very enthusiastic and passionate about the reading material. She is so friendly and patient. All were made welcome in the class and she ensured there was time for questions at the end of modules. A dedicated, hardworking, smart prof.
Wonderful person, wonderful lecturer. Helpful, kind and engaging. Couldn't ask for more.
Loved her! Terrific prof.
Professor Visvis was an excellent lecturer and a lovely person. She had a warm and approachable manner and was very willing to extend additional help. It was very clear that her goal was to help her students succeed and the clarity of her assignments was extremely helpful. She is excellent.
Pleasant but overrated. Pros: Professional, accommodating, normal. I love her organized lecture outlines. Cons: Too nice. Often agrees, rarely challenges. Lacks charisma. Speaks at conversational speed, ie too fast for note taking. Talks to the ceiling (it's kind of cute.) Could engage the class more by having them read poems out loud.
Really good prof. and course. Lectures were very clear and detailed. Class discussions were very open and fair. The handouts given out each week summarizing the topics were very helpful. Visvis was approachable and knowledgeable. Overall, great course.
I felt treated fairly in this course. Assignments and tests were reasonable, and marking was fair and fast. My work meant something to the professor, and she was held up her end of the bargain by working hard too.
Not sure what the big deal is with this extremely popular professor. She's nice, approachable, and very well-organized, but lectures weren't very interesting and were sometimes quite shallow. Not very receptive to other points of view. Not very interested in discussion, period, though not rude either. Class is pretty easy, unchallenging.
Wonderful prof. Unpretentious, modest, organized, calm, and dedicated instructor. Shes not gimmicky, but her lectures are very thorough, rich, clear, and engaging. I think when profs get popular, students like to cut them down, but this is a really solid prof who actually cares about her students. Miraculously, she even made me like Canlit.
How can you not love an Aussie? Don't listen to the boring haters, Prof Visvis. I loved your course. Smart, detailed, organized lectures. Outlines saved my life. Thanks for a great year!
I think she's also so well liked because she helps out. When she didn't know if she was going on strike this year, she scanned her comments for all our assignments right after marking them, and then emailed them to us, just in case she couldn't give them back . My scan didn't work, so she typed up every hand written word of feedback for me.
She's boring, reads off her pre-scripted lectures, with no room for participation. She's extremely particular about writing essays 5-paragraph-style, with exceeding focus on topic sentences. There's no room for creativity, which is paralyzing in a 3rd yr course. She doesn't give extensions without a medical note, even in extenuating circumstances.
Visvis has a phenomenally welcoming and encouraging personality which translates wonderfully to a classroom setting. Although she tends to rely heavily on her pre-scripted lectures, she provided very helpful breakdowns of her lectures and went to great lengths to accommodate for different editions of the texts. Overall a very pleasant experience,
Vikki Visvis is by far the best professor I've had for an English course at U of T. The reading list was great and not too long. Her lectures were really interesting. She offered a lot of extra help and great feedback, and I feel like my writing really improved because of this class. Would definitely take again.
Visvis is a very kind and available teacher. Sometimes I find her interpretations a little surface level, which is less of a reflection of her as a thinker (I've read her papers and she's hella smart) than her expectations of undergraduates. Her lectures can sometimes drag on, but are very clear and easy to follow.
She is the best professor I've ever had at U of T. Her lectures can be tough to follow sometimes but she often repeats key points several times and will take the time to explain concepts to students if asked. She's so nice and really cares about student opinion and input.
Visvis is a kind, caring person, but I found her lectures a little boring. Her readings of texts are a little self-evident, which can be good to get you acquainted with some of the more established interpretations of a text, but in a 300-level class I was hoping for more of a challenge. Keep your essays old school and you'll be fine.
Highly recommended -- she is very kind, engaging, and thorough. Every lecture is organized (she posts lecture outlines and stays on tract) and offers intelligent and insightful analysis. No rants or boring summaries. Best prof I've ever had.
What an absolute dream. Her lectures are BEYOND crystal clear, and she is ALL ABOUT engaging with students in office hours. She gives a fantastic overview of the major criticism that has been done on each work studied in class and makes very clear the criticisms' academic origins. #Dream
Prof. Visvis is a warm and charming woman, not to mention incredibly smart. Her lectures are always clear, well-organized, and engaging and she makes a clear effort to connect with her students. If you're in the habit of skipping class, you might have trouble doing well, but if you attend consistently and do the readings, it's an easy A!
Her lectures are brutal, and her interpretations of the novels are dreadfully boring. She makes genuinely fascinating movements like realism and surrealism so boring and clinical it almost makes me hate things I love. Her main take away from every book is that they are really autobiographical works on the authors themselves.
Professor Visvis was fantastic. She was enthusiastic and she made me really interested in the course. I found the class to be a good balance of lecture and discussion, and it made the 3 hour class really enjoyable. Sometimes longer classes can be a bit boring but I always really looked forward to coming to class.
Vikki made me enjoy CanLit! Undoubtedly one of the best English profs. Caring, funny, wants you to succeed-- genuinely. Her lecture outlines are proof of that. Lectures are clear and cohesive. Don't listen to people saying her interpretations are shallow. They're just not used to a prof who wants students to understand material. I wasn't either!
Visvis is the best prof at UofT hands down. She helped me take my writing to the next level and was so incredibly helpful. The most thorough feedback that you could imagine and so caring. She really made you want to learn even though the subject matter was quite dry. Took the course for breadth but will seek her out to take more classes with her.
Literally the kindest and most caring professor I have encountered during my 5 years at UofT. As she is an expert at rhetoric and verbal communication, her classes were engaging and enjoyable. Her voice is also extremely calming and nice to listen too. She also makes a lot of clever jokes that makes the class that much more entertaining!
3h lecture can be boring because she reads her slides word to word, but that also makes the course really easy because you don't have to give 200% concentration in class. She has a lot of office hours and gives really detailed feedback if you talk about your assignments with her. She takes attendance and there's participation marks.
Vikki is such a kind and caring teacher! You can tell she is really passionate about Canadian literature and does her research. Her lectures are always very detailed and her powerpoint slides are good too. Only thing is her paper lengths are long (8 pages) and as someone who struggles to meet the word count I had a hard time completing her essays.
She was really nice and orchestrated class discussions incredibly well. She also actually had a sense of humour. I don't remember much from that semester's other courses but she was a bright spot. Very generous marker as well, understanding of current situations.
Professor Visvis is such a good person, she's so caring about her students and really ensures we're all doing well mentally. I really enjoy the flexibility of her essay topics and how there's enough variety to choose from even if you haven't read every text. You can get away with not reading everything, and her tests are always fair and clear.
Best writing center instructor ever! Dr. Visvis is very nice and helpful.
She is very articulate and kind. I would recommend booking writing centre appointments with her for her course bc that helps a LOT bc she marks your work too. Her exam was a bit brutal though, but I think she still marked leniently. The content is applicable to every course, and I am glad I took it. Amazing and caring prof.
I enjoyed her prompts and lectures in 2021. I recall that many had a technical issue concerning course reader, a online textbook, and she was understanding and very helpful. Her lectures were online at the time and I recalled participation was highly encouraged to ensure our marks. I would recommend her as a professor.
So good. My favourite prof at U of T. Super understanding when things come up. Her online lecs are super accessible.
I took WRR103 as an elective, needless to say she was a tough grader and didn't give proper feedback. A lot of the essays that were written were graded by her OWN opinion. Be ready to adjust to her likings and do readings that peak her interest, a lot of the assignments were based on her interpretation.
Visvis is a great prof - her lectures are engaging and she really cares about her students. Consistent attendance is key, but it's an easy A if you put in the work. Paired with unstuck AI, this class is a breeze!
WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN. She is the coolest and sweetest prof. She is so funny in her lectures and creates GREAT class discussions. Was a very generous marker. A prof that really wants to see her students succeed. Gives the best feedback on assignments also AND UGHH she even marks fast and replies to emails within the hour every time. THE BEST!
