gives very hard examms, grades fairly
No Comments
He is very knowledgeable, grades fairly, and don't even think about completing his final in three hours!
You Have to study in order to ace this course!!No half measures!
Pros and Cons. Two exams weigh very heavily in your final grade.
You definitely have to read and pay attention in class to do well. While there are only two exams, if you know your stuff, you will do fairly well!
The course content is challenging but Professor Advani is very helpful with the comprehension of the material. You definitely get out of this course what you put into it.
Want some fun, challenging and complex subject that helps with your career? This is the one! Vik do teach right.
Very interesting class and the professor is extremely good in teaching what you need to know and clarifying the question. Maybe can reduce the cover of the class a little bit and reserve the time for further discussion.
The best advice I can give is to keep up with the readings, he will call you out on it if you don't read but the class was awesome and actually kept me interested. the exams are a little long, but he helps you out so much on them the midterms a take home and the finals open notes/book can't beat that!
Definitely a lot of reading in this class, but it's very interesting and applicable to real-world situations. The class was very challenging, but Vik is also fair. The exams are long, but you're well prepared. Vik can seem pompous at times, but in the end he's a cool guy. One of the best and most rewarding classes I've had in awhile.
The class wasnt "easy", but overall is very good. The content can be difficult, but Vik is very good and helpful in explaining things. I do think he goes home with a smile knowing he's made your life a little difficult-hence, the midterm and final you take and the amount of reading you have to do in a week.
extremely knowledgeable and entertaining
Prof Advani has a great sense of humor and brings a genuine interest to the class. Expect to do a lot of reading and writing and be sure to come to class prepared. For the final, it helps to be ambidexterous as your hand may very well fall off somewhere around bluebook 2. Overall, a great class to take with a very knowledgeable professor.
Vik very knowledgeable & keeps you interested in a topic that might otherwise be boring. Pay attention, take good notes & you'll do well.Prepare to read a lot b/c he will call on you to answer a question or 5, especially when you're trying to avoid making eye contact with him as he's looking for a victim. He is funny & sarcastic & he grades fairly.
his reading assignment helps me improve. thx
A lot of reading assigned. Midterm and final are long and will take time. If you are prepared and do your work the class will not seem too hard. He goes over everything you need to know so if you do not do well it is pretty much your own fault. He will randomly call on people, but is very careful not to embarrass anyone. Great professor!
Kept the class interested and engaged with teaching style. This is very commendable considering the fact that the topics were sometimes complex and keeping one's focus can be challenging during a late evening class.
Excellent teacher... going to make you work like hell
Reviewing the cases in class is very helpful, but sometimes we skip around which makes the notes hard to follow. Midterm exam was fair. Reading assignments can be too demanding for people who work full time.
His expectations were set out in beginning of the semester and were followed accordingly. Doesn't get much more fair than that.
Good class, very informative. The class is mostly covers cases, it would be more helpful if it there was more discussion on HR policies. Professor was interesting, kept it interesting, but can be brutal at times.
One of the best professors at Rutgers. Class is very interesting and applicable to real life. Material is tough but professor keeps class fun and exams are fair.
@ 1st you wander "what the hell did I get into" then he'll grow on U. His bark's worse than his bite & boy can he bark. In all fairness he taught the class v.well you'll get more from the class than you thought you would on day 1. U could not ask for a more fair teacher but you'll get out of the class what you put into it. Challeging but very fair
Unfortunately Prof Advani teaches only one class, would love to take his class again!
Very engaging class and teacher
Fight the urge to drop the course after taking the first class. He comes off very strong in the beginning but is a good, fair teacher. The midterm sucks...dont plan on doing anything fun for that entire week. He does grade it fairly though, and I learned a lot in his class.
real nice guy. know his stuff. class can be intimidating.
Advani comes across as a tough (and a bit arrogant) professor at first, but he is really a nice guy and is fair in his grading throughout the course. Lots of reading required but you'll learn a ton. Exams are brutal but graded fairly. I would definitely take a course w/ him again despite the time commitment throughout the semester.
Pro. Advani is not a extremely hard but definitely not easy. His main concern is that he wants students to read the material before class. He will definitely call on you whether you know it or not. Dont lie, just say I didnt read. He doesnt expect you to become a lawyer by taking his class, but wants you to understand the main concepts.
Excellent teacher. Advani's that one teacher that you will remember many years after the completion of school; especially when you're sitting in a court room about take your boss for everything he's got! Being my first semester, out of 4 classes, this is the class I learned the most from and ironically enough, if I had to do it over, I'd go for law
Engaging teacher. Came out very strong and intimidating at first but you get used to it. A tough class if you don't have read and understood your reading material, so coming prepared was a hard learned lesson. Helped us become better readers as well as he guided us through the tough reading materials. Grading was fair; final was intense.
great professor, makes class interesting and informative.
For some rason Prof Advani really likes to scare the class in the begining, and I feel that might cause some students to initially worry more than learn. But u soon realize its really nothing to worry abt. Lots to read and learn, but a fun class all the same. Prof Advani definitely knows how to keep the class alert! Tough but fair.
His style is quite interesting. The first day, he did an excellent job in causing panic about the course. After a while u realize he's really there to help ur understanding of the subject matter, and really only expects common sence answers taken out of the text. If you do your readings and take notes on what he says u wil do fine in the class.
Great class; however beware of professor's direct and sometimes humiliating style. Sometimes rushes international students having difficulty translating. Class should elicit thought and conversation on cases/topics; however Advani scares many students into their shell. As with most classes, it's best to come prepared, and expect to participate.
Great Class, Plenty of weekly reading [brief 10-15 cases] and one take home midterm and a in class final. Professor is very nice and entertaining. Don't sleep in class or else you'll miss the show. Class causes urge to sue everyone.
You'll read 1100 pages of Law. That's the hard part especially if you have anything else to do in life, like eating, sleeping, etc. Good thing is that it's easy reading. but it averages out to about 100 pages a week. Professor is great, reasonable, and funny. Learned a lot.
The professor teaches in a clear-cut way and he is nice and funny.
Explains very well. Just need to stop putting people down. There is very thin line which seperates "having fun" and "making fun" but crossing that line has big big impact
At times Prof. Advanti can be entertaining, but other times he can be very sarcatic. One things for sure- you won't fall asleep. He gives ALOT of reading that you actually have to do to keep up. For the final, he lets you bring notes which you can basically copy. He could have just made it a takehome.
Great professor. Explains the text very well. Enjoyed the class. Must attend all classes to keep up. There is a lot of material, but don't be overwhelmed. Read for class!
This is a graduate level course, just do the assigned work and everything else will fall into place.
A little sarcastic and arrogant, but a fair grader and I learned a lot
Great professor. Knows the material very well and does a great job explaining it. Lots of reading but not boring. Great class, learned a lot.
He is a good teacher and very helpful. He'd like to make sure every student understand what he stress and have sense of employment law.
Teaching is a difficult profession, but Professor Vikrant Advani definitely has that unique ability to teach. More important, his teaching style is very youthful and unconventional. He is very sharp and has lots of character to offer. Great class!
One of the best class I've taken! Advani wants everyone to understand material, and will explain until you understand. He has a very confident energy to him. You really have to use your brains for this class as you will be reading and talking about cases alot in class, be ready to take notes for exams, don't forget what employee at will means!
Prof. Advani was very good in explaining the law and its context. He was very helpful in giving additional information when required. He has a real good sense of humor and is very current on public cases that might apply to our class work.
I really learned a lot in this class. He makes the material easy to understand even though the book is pretty tough. He cares about how his students are doing. The midterm and the final are tough, but definitely manageable because the midterm is take home and the final is open book/notebook. You just have to be prepared to write a lot. Great class!
Great course, great professor, one of those classes you dont mind attending. You will laugh a lot in this class and still end up understanding complex law terminology and applications.
The class is great. A little overwhelming at first, but once you get a handle on the verbiage and the book itself, you really learn A LOT. Advani is more than thorough and willing to go back to and explain anything you're confused about. He'll even crack a joke or two if you're lucky. Highly recommend this professor!

I would definately recommend taking Professor Advani's Employment Law course. He has an exceptional teaching style and personality that force his students to be engaged in the classroom. Anyone taking this class would benefit greatly.
I was never really fascinated by law prior to taking Advani's class. This course was a requirement and although the context was extremely beneficial to my career, I didn't anticipate enjoying the course as much as I did. I know that the extent of my learning and my present interest is purely due to Advani's exceptional teaching.
I absolutely LOVED this class. Before taking the course, I was not too keen on it. But the way Prof. Vik Advani taught was just incredible! The way he conducts the class holds the attention of the students. He is a very dynamic professor and has a wonderful sense of humor. I can't see myself enjoying this course so much if it weren't for him!
Love this class! I have learned a lot yet it's difficult. Love the way Prof Advani teaches and appears:)PS: I am considering seriously to try to apply law school... so you will know how good this professor is! He opens the door for you and it's attractive!
This was a great course. Absolutely beneficial to any one working in the HR field or hope to work there someday. The professor was great, his mode of teaching made you stay on top of the material cause you had to be prepared for class at all times. I would definitely recommend this course.
really made a subject like law fun to learn
Great teacher for a difficult course.
Great prof!!! I had him back in 2001, but I"m sure he's still keeping things interesting. Rock on Vik!
Vik is the best professor I ever had bar none! He is a young, hip and is a practicing attorney so he can provide real examples to supplement the course. He is extremely funny and engaging and I am only sorry he is not teaching any of the other courses I need to complete.
Good professor... hard class. A lot of reading but the material is really interesting. You learn a lot in this class and he makes sure you are prepared every class (or else it's going to show)!
He's really nice and funny - made the class interesting - tough grader so far, but fair
He is a great teacher. Very intelligent but also fun, down to earth, and can relate to the students. He wants us to learn but keeps the class funny too. I would definitely take another class with him. Exams were not too hard; they are either take home or open book. Remember: Pay attention and take notes in class! Highlight what he tells you too!!!
I think he was a cool professor. He actually made something that could be extremely boring interesting. I think he's fair in terms of grading. As long as you don't BS him, he won't BS your grade.
This guy is awesome. He is very engaging while he lectures and he expresses his material in a way that you will have no choice but to pick it up. This class is a MUST for kids who are thinking of law school. Prof Advani is a younger guy and a practicing attorney, and overall he makes the class fun. I would def recommend it.
Vik is the best professor I have ever had at Rutgers. He is very engaging and genuinely wants all his students to do well. If you show up to class, and pay attention, you will get an A. There is no trickery here. Also, he should run for president. He is that great.
The ratings below are all true. Prof. Advani is an engaging, funny professor who grades leniently. I don't think anybody can fail his class if they put some effort in their work (and attendance). The exams are on the most basic topics he goes over in class (10 MC, 4 SH, one fact pattern). Definitely recommended!
Great teacher, funniest professor I have ever met. Very interesting class because of him. You dont HAVE to buy the book, but def would be helpful. TAKE the class with him!!
This guy is amazing, best college professor I ever had and ever will have. Every other college professor is a letdown because no one can be as good as Vik. Not only does he explain the material, he also makes jokes and is pretty funny. Made an hour and 20 minutes feel like 5.
Good professor, he is fair in grading, and his exams are straight forward. He hammers information into you, and really explains concepts well, I suggest if you dont mind reading a bit you take his classes, hes a really good professor. If you fail his class, rather if you get anything less than a B in his class, it is your own fault
This guy is amazing! He's very kind- hearted and cares a lot about his students. He also makes class fun and is super hilarious!! He had us cracking up the whole time in class! He makes law so interesting and he is a very inspirational person. His grading is fair and he gives people chances to do well& wants you to understand not memorize material.
Can this guy PLEASE run for president?? haha he's that amazing! he was extremely hilarious and made law so much fun and easy to understand and takes time to help students because he actually cares. He needs to teach more classes and be a full time professor and comedian! I'm so sad that he only teaches law and not other classes. :(
Excellent teacher. Interacts with his students. You will not fall asleep in this class if you do, he will wake you up!lol I learned a lot a & he gives plenty of examples in the lectures that helps you retain the info. Exams are fair you def need to study though. It's only easy if you come to class, take notes and study! He's cute & funny. +++
Very interesting professor. It is not an easy A class. but if you study hard for the exams, you will definitely get an A. read the textbook and the readings
This class was awesome. I learned so much and there was no un needed busy work. Everything was useful and he really knows his stuff. Totally recommend this class and him.
Everything is true about professor advani. He is a great professor and makes sure you understand the lectures. Hes not an easy A, but the course itself is very interesting.
Advani's demeanor has changed over the years. The entire grade for this class is based on two exams. For the midterm he gave little information on what would be on it and for the final he gave almost none. The course was reading intensive and if you didn't show up for every lecture, your chances of doing well on the exams plummeted.
Took Prof Advani twice for two different law classes and he is the most amazing professor. Midterm, Final, Participation. JUST GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION AND YOU WILL DO FINE. He is hilarious and awesome! If you do bad in his classes, then you obviously don't pay attention to what he says. He makes law easy and clear to understand! Take him! :)
Go to every class, pay attention, do the readings, and study for exams. No homework besides short readings each week. You're graded on 1 midterm, final, and attendance. I thought midterm was easy, final was kind of difficult. He makes law interesting and is very engaging. Would definitely take him again!
All you have to do is pay attention in class and take really good, detailed notes and you'll get an A. You don't need to read the textbook though he says you do. He lectures straight from it so you don't need it. The 2 exams he gives are very straightforward but you need to memorize a good amount of info for each (noncumulative).
Professor Advani is one of the best professors I've experienced within my academic career. His exams are derived straight from his lectures so you must attend every class & take thorough notes if you want to earn a decent grade. Professor Advani stresses how important it is to learn the concepts of the material presented, STUDY HARD FOR HIS EXAMS!
AD is fun, and usually take 2 hours instead of 3. No homework. One midterm, one final. But you should really prepared for class and listen to him carefully. If you really listen in the class and read the text book, easy A. Absolutely, he curves.
Take him for Employment Law. He's seriously the best. He cuts lectures short, tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams, and curves like crazy. I highly recommend him. Easy A if you just pay attention. I promise you, it's worth going to his class once a week.
Nice guy, corny jokes.. Like literally jokes about every single boring thing as being "sexy".. Thought that was weird. There were two "quizzes" and a final exam. SOOO much info to know. Probably the hardest I've ever studied for an exam. Didn't do that well but he curves it. You need the book becuase he basically teaches off it.. So boring though
Professor is great and you will learn a lot with him. Buy the textbook- you need it and read the assigned readings for each class. He makes the information much clearer in lecture. 1 midterm and 1 final make up almost your whole grade (besides 10% for attendance)- if you're not a good test taker, take something else. Exams are fair.
There are NO PowerPoints to follow along with as it was just a 3 hour lecture of him speaking, therefore you MUST attend. He does not keep you the full time EVER, which is great. The tests are open ended which is actually good because his multiple choice were nearly impossible. He is very sarcastic and does make fun of students sometimes.
Long, boring lectures. He gets off topic very easily. He doesn't have a real structure to his class and can be very confusing. Multiple choice on his exams are difficult.
As a senior, he is the first professor I rate. Like him a lot! Lectures are interesting. Have to go to class to take notes. Only two exams per semester and they are easy, took me two hours to study before each exam. No homework, just reading.
I enjoyed his class. Lectures were 3 hours at night, but his examples of law cases kept me awake. Grade is based on 2 exams and attendance. He doesn't use powerpoints, so you have to go to class.
I really enjoyed having Vik as my professor. You can tell that he is so passionate about what he teaches and he has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to law. Be sure to take notes, keep up with the readings and attendance classes & you'll do well on the exams. His lectures are entertaining and you'll take away a lot from this course!
Good professor. You'll have to go to class if you want to pass though. Lectures are all verbal and through the textbook so you'll need to take notes. However, he kept it interesting and class is only based off 2 exams.
Initially comes off as a strict professor. But eventually when you get to know him he's quite humorous and makes the class interesting. A cool guy!
Most amazing professor at Rutgers. Not an easy A, but by far the best teacher who keeps the classroom lively and entertaining when discussing pretty mundane topics. Took three of his classes. I recommend for everyone to have him at least once. Such a great and smart person.
Do NOT take if you aren't a good test taker. Learned a lot and sparked my interest in law. Gave a generous curve and usually wrapped up class early. The wait time for exam results was a bit ridiculous (about a month), and his TA wasn't the most galvanizing member. Regardless Vik presented material in an engaging way, made the 3 hr lecture fly by
Arrogant, but knows what he is talking about for the most part. Jokes around and uses examples. Curve is insane and he just wants you to learn the info. Don't really need the textbook if you pay good enough attention and take notes.
No homework or papers however we are graded on only 2 tests. Mid term and final are mostly on textbook and class readings and a few stories he tells in class. He is funny but classes are long. PAY ATTENTION, TAKE NOTES and you will pass. He gives a generous curve on tests. If you are not good a memorization or reading law textbooks do not take!
Although class material was not easy for a foreigner like me, he tries to explain to very thoroughly. COME TO CLASS, TAKE NOTES, STUDY FOR THE EXAM. Then you'll be fine because he gives a very detailed study guide.
One of the best classes I've taken at Rutgers. You have to be present for all lectures because he doesn't have Powerpoints, just the textbook and some assigned articles/cases. As long as you pay attention and take detailed notes, you'll learn the material. Personally, always felt very engaged with the course content - he cares a lot that you learn!
I'll have taken 3 of his classes after this semester. Definitely makes you work for your grade, but he will help you understand core concepts if you ask for help. Attendance is absolutely mandatory and the midterms/finals are the only grades for his law classes. One of my favorite professors overall.
Took him during Covid so all over Zoom, he is very nice and caring. The only things I didn't like was the incredibly long lectures and no option for visual learners. The class was essentially just an attempt to listen and stare at the screen for over 3 hours. Then go back to the textbook and try to comprehend it.
Initally comes off asa tough guy and very strict, but underneath it all he's quite funny and cares for his students and wants them to pass. The lectures are long and the tests are heavily pulled based on them and all of the readings so you gotta listen and take notes. I got an A but had to work really hard for it. Overall great guy, learned lots.
Professor Advani is amazing. He cares and wants everyone to have an understanding. Important to pay attention throughout the entire lecture or else you will become confused and fall behind. Important to keep up with the readings. Reading the cases are not easy, but he explains them very well during class. 1 week long midterm, and 1 weeklong final.
Professor Advani is probably the best professor I've had in all of college. He cares about his students especially if you are trying your best. You will be sitting there listening to him lecture for 3 hours but it kept me more engaged then most other classes. Liked him so much I ended up taking another 2 courses with him. Very Inspirational.
Prof Advani is an AMAZING professor. Hands down one of my fav professors yet. He genuinely cares about what he teaches and wants us to understand the material. He's pretty funny and very engaging. Although classes are 3 hrs long (usually ends early) you won't get bored because the class and his stories are super interesting. Definitely take him!
One of the best professors here at Rutgers University. Courses like this can be a huge bore if not done correctly. Advani's lectures are entertaining and cover the necessary topics for exams and written assignments. He is respectful of students time and energy, overall GREAT experience! if you can commit to showing up to class you'll do well!
Comes across as strict at first but he's very nice and genuinely wants everyone to succeed. Textbook is required and you need to come to class. Our grades consisted of 2 exams and participation. The exams were hard but straightforward, and he tells you what he expects. It's easy to do badly on the exams so make sure to take really good notes
Professor Advani is a great professor. I do not know anything about law but he makes so easy to understand and he makes sure everyone understands. He is very engaging in the class. He is a lawyer himself so he may seem a bit tough but he actual wants the best for you and is not afraid to help out. Definitely take for pre-law or HR major/minor.
Professor Advani was great, I learned so much from his class. It's a lot of reading and the exams required a lot of prep and writing. However, I got a lot of value from his class and he makes the content engaging. I was never bored in class. But if you want an easy A and a class that requires little work, I wouldn't recommend him.
Employment law with him was interesting but in my opinion he was not a good professor. unapproachable, unfriendly, and unfair in his grading. tried his best to curve exams which was appreciated, but papers were graded arbitrarily with no feedback whatsoever. attendance mandatory and will also make snarky comments if you answer wrong in class.
Do not take this professor. I cannot believe he does not know how to use zoom lol. He is old school (webex). He does not give any hw, so the midterm and final is your only source of grade. You are throwing all your effort into 2 test and no extra credit. So if you mess up on even 1 exam, you won't pass.
Professor Advani is engaging and makes the material accessible, even for those new to law. The exams are challenging but manageable with good note-taking and prep. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for studying - highly recommend it along with the free textbook.
Anyone who speaks poorly of Prof. Advani's employment law course most likely just didn't get to bullshit through the course like they wanted to. Do the readings and take good notes in class. Do not take this course if you're trying to slide by with an easy A; you have to earn your grade and he gives you all the resources possible to do so.
Professor Advani might get a lot of bad reputation but I purely believe it is from people who refuse to actually do the work in class and want to receive any ‘easy A.' Lectures may be long but they are helpful and the information that Professor Advani teaches you is interesting. The class consisted of one midterm and a final, along with two papers.
Hesitant to take Prof Vik after what I had heard prior to the semester. I must say that his bad reputation is purely based off students wanting to coast to an easy A. Prof Vik's lectures are engaging and his teaching style really helps you grasp the material if you pay attention. If you actually want to learn, I highly recommend Professor Vik.
He is very engaging
Prof. Advani makes a class about law very interesting and accessible for students to learn. There is a good amount of readings and resources to go through each week, but they are all helpful in understanding and applying concepts to discussion forums and exams. Great and relevant class to take!
