professor rao is amazing. his lectures are great, but you dont have to come to class to do well. you get two tries on everything. plus he's really caring. i have covid and he just said to rest and dont worry about the course, feel better soon. all my other professors told me to keep up while at home. i wish they were all like professor rao
Makes it very easy to get an A. HW is due about every other week and is very simple. If you get a 70 or above on both midterms, you get an A in the class and don't have to take the final. Class is very basic level knowledge level of stats.
Rao overall is a great educator in the field of statistics, and provides students the ability to both learn the very basics of statistics and apply it in a useful "common day" manner. Depending on the lecture it is easy to check out halfway - end, but overall they are still useful and available online. Great professor and addition to U of I.
Really nice guy, easy grader, this class is pretty much impossible to not get an A in. All homework assignments have two tries (including quizzes) and the content is pretty easy especially in the first half of the class. His tests have little to no actual calculations in them, Cheat sheets on all tests. No final!
His assignment structure made it very easy to hold a high grade in the class and his lectures were always enthusiastically presented. A good lecturer and a professor that only wants to see his students succeed in understanding the content. We need more professors like Dr. Rao.
Prof Rao is loved by many, but for me, I found his lectures hard to follow. He often just skims over what is in the book. However, it is fairly easy to get an A in the class. Only rating to suggest to take the course with one of the other Professors. We had a lecture done by Karle Flanagan one day, and it was much better and easier to understand.
Dr Rao is a very attentive professor who truly cares about the content of his class with a passion. His class is structured in a way to ensure all his students can succeed with reasonable effort while understanding the content. His lectures are very well presented and recordings are offered actively, giving students a lot of flexibility
Professor Rao is one of the kindest and most effective instructors I have had. He can make classes with 600+ people feel personal and his effort/ability to care for his students is evident. Rao is very inspirational and overall a great teacher. This is definitely the best class to take for the QR1 requirement. I
A guided notebook is the required textbook for the class, although it was poorly utilized by Professor Rao. He skimmed over the examples, making it hard to understand the concepts. The content of the lectures would be easy to understand if the lecture was given in a way that explained the concepts with context and utilized the guided notes.
Very good lecturer for STAT 100. He understands that its a beginner level stats course, and makes everything easy to understand.
Great professor and really cares for his students. Math isn't really my forte my he made it somewhat easier to understand. There is a fair share of homework and quizzes throughout the semester. Two exams, the midterm and final. Both are done before midterm and finals week though. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Cares about students, offers multiple opportunities for extra credit. However, I found his lectures difficult to follow at times. Some topics are overcomplicated and the wording in the book is confusing to me. Also, lectures do not follow the book 100%, and he skips over some review questions. More challenging than I expected for 100-level course.
Professor Rao was a good guy but I just never really aligned with his teaching style. Cares about what he is teaching and his students, I just always found his lectures quite confusing and found teaching myself was what I was doing most of the time.
I understood where Rao was going with the class, but his teaching style was difficult to follow. After week 1 of class, he emphasized that attendance was not mandatory, making it difficult to be present and attentive. He posted video recordings for every lecture which was nice when it came time to study for exams. Grade is all quizzes and exams.
When he said "attendance is optional" that was code for "if you don't wanna do/discuss the practice problems in class, just leave." If you participate and ask questions to Rao/the CAs, you should be good. Coming from AP Stat, I really think this course gave me a better appreciation for statistics and how it's actually used, not just using a TI-84
Lectures were really hard to follow. The content in the book is often different from the lectures. Quiz questions don't help you prepare for exams. Too hard and overcomplicated for 100-level class.
I am NOT a math person, and thank God I chose Rao. He taught us about effect sizes and making causal inferences and using statistical models, all things that show up in my psych classes. This is probably the most useful 100 level class. Just make sure you actually show up and ask questions. My roommate never came to class and got a C. I got an A.
I did not like his lecture style so I chose to watch most of them through the recordings he posted. Overall very flexible which is nice if you get sick. But i did end up teaching myself most things. Although I didn't find the lectures engaging, I know that Rao/his CAs are very open to helping students, and the office hours were helpful.
I took Stat100 online. We just watch lecture recordings and go to office hours. Rao's lectures are pretty entertaining, for an online course at least. I waited until week 4 to go to office hours which was a mistake -- go to office hours every week! The CAs were really helpful. My grade improved a lot after I started going to office hours.
Rao's lectures are actually low key kinda interesting. Plus he drops your first midterm if you do better on the final. If you put in the effort, Rao's class is an easy A, plus you actually learn interesting things. Some other stats classes are easier, but you just memorize and don't actually learn anything there. Take stats with Rao!
Professor Rao is the kindest and most generous professor I've ever had. I missed several assignments because of some health flare ups, and he accepted all of them without a penalty, and even assigned one of the TAs to work with me to make sure I did well on the exam. No other professor does that. I'm so thankful I had professor Rao
Professor Rao is a great professor. You can tell he really cares about his students.
I made a HUGE mistake and didn't realize our midterm was due in Saturday (I thought it was due Sunday). Professor Rao allowed me to take it on Sunday anyway without penalty. Instead of a C, thanks to professor rao's kindness, I'll be getting an A. I really appreciate how understanding professor Rao was. Plus he's a great instructor
Just finished the summer online course. I thought the midterms were a little tricky, but the curve professor gave was AMAZING. Easy A, and low key kind of interesting.
Do what he says you should do and you'll get an A
HUGE curve. It moved me B+ to A. Study hard for final. My final replaced my.midterm score. Makes big difference in final grade
Easiest class ever. Professor actually wants you to succeed. So many grade replacement opportunities, I believe he curved every test, everything you need is in the workbook. Lectures are a bit boring but he records them all and doesn't take attendance. Pretty much stopped going in-person after 2 weeks. Just watch the videos to study.
im in stat100 right now. his lectures are the best compared to my other intro classes. i like being able to ask the ta questions in class. we just got midterm grades. there was a huge curve. my friends that come to class we all did really well.
easy online class. unlimited attempts on homeworks. kind of tough exams but huge curve. pretty straight forward to get an A. and it's actually useful -- a lot of what professor roa talked about are showing up again in my other clases
You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and what they are going through..I had a few issues and communicated with him directly about it and he was nothing but understanding and kind, clearly just wanting his students to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. His lectures are engaging and not boring either; highly recommend him!!
Easy class if you actually go to class every day and pay attention. I skipped class a lot and got a C on the first exam. Then I started going to class everyday and got an A on the next exam. Rao is really helpful if you ask questions. But he does expect you to do your work. If you're goofing off in class he'll call you out.
Rao is the best
He's good. Not a lot of equations and math.
Stat 100 is my hardest course. I am learning a lot that shows up in my other psych classes, so it is useful. But I didn't think I'd have to work so hard.
Would stop his lectures to wait for 600 people to be silent before teaching. Made participation checks for problems worked on individually in class for points, but then wouldn't always go over the correct answers afterward so I couldn't find out what I did wrong.
Exams are hard but it's useful. I have friend in the other section and they're just doing a bunch of math. We don't do calculations, it's a lot of reading. But I like that. I don't like math. Rao makes stats actually useful.
Professor Rao sent me an email congratulating me on getting an A on the midterm. I've never had a professor do that before. He's such a good professor and he's really kind and caring. Take as many classes with him as you can.
Lectures are so boring and unengaging so be prepared but his grading curve saved me for real. He gets really sassy if you try to leave lecture early so beware. Also study extra hard for midterm 3.
I'm only writing because I'm surprised what other people are writing. If you take college seriously, and you want to learn a lot, and are willing to work hard, take Professor Rao. I'm so thankful I had him. The course pushes you, but Professor Rao and the CAs are incredibly supportive. If all you want to do is goof off, then don't take the class.
Genuinely cares about students so much, literally wants everyone to get an A
The tests cover material, but the questions are worded in an extremely confusing and overly complicated way. It often feels like the tests are more about deciphering what the question is asking rather than focusing on the content. Additionally, we don't go over problems, and I can't see previous tests. How am I supposed to learn from my mistakes?
Professor Rao's dedication to students is amazing. He made stats interesting instead of intimidating. He and the TAs also communicated great given how many students there are.
I had a terrible semester. Professor Rao was very helpful and supportive. I am very grateful for Professor Rao.
i took this class thinking it would be my easy A. wrong. rao's stats class was a lot of reading and understanding concepts instead of math, which i thought it would be. he is a very caring professor and you can tell that he genuinely wants you to do good, but his class was pretty hard. he does give a lot of extra credit towards the end so do those
Professor Rao is the best. You have to work hard, but he makes it interesting and relevant. Every exam has a curve. And he sends you an email at the end of the semester if you get an A to congratulate you! So sweet ❣️
If you aren't a fan of not questions being vastly different on the practice problems than on the exams I'm not sure I would recommend him. He is very caring about his students and take advantage of office hours. However you can't look at your wrong answers on past tests or on any of the practice problems so how do you know what to study??
Rao's class isn't a typical math class, which I loved!! He focuses on big picture ideas. I spent about 4-5 hrs every every week outside of class after midterm 1, reading the book and watching lecture recordings to take good notes. It's worth it though, I learned more from Rao than any of my other classes.
If you took AP Stats in highschool, this is nothing like it. This class amazing. Professor Rao truly cares about his students and he really takes the time to make sure everyone is learning and not falling behind. He gives you multiple opprotunites to acheive an A in this class and prepares you very well for the tests. Very easy to get an A!
Amazing lectures he is very passionate
Take stat with Rao! I'm pre-law and didn't think about it would actually help me but turns out asking who's not here and what was compared is helping me on practice LSAT questions!
some things are confusing, but there's so much extra credit, and you get unlimited attempts. love the ca's. theyre really nice and helpful
Soo much better than econ 202. There's a lot of reading and the exams are tough, but there's not so much equations and math which I like. Go to office hours every week and try to work with Rao.
I love professor roa. The class is hard, but he does a lot to help students. And it feels really useful. Do all the extra credit. Go to all the office hours. And take good notes.
Professor Rao is a great professor. I'm taking the online Stats 100 class at the moment. I struggle with stats due to my weakness in conceptual understanding and trick questions, so I might end up with a C or lower. Still, I respect him he genuinely tries to help students. There's also lots of extra credit, so make sure to do them.
he is alright
I hate Rao. It's an online class. But exams are in person? And then he tells me because I didn't follow his instructions he's going to take 10% off my exam if I take it late? And don't even try emailing him, he'll send you a grumpy message about the syllabus saying to email the class email account and not him.
Hard class, but I feel like I've learned more from professor Rao than any of my other classes
Professor Rao is the kindest. I did really bad on the second test, so I worked really hard went to every class went to every office hour and got an A on the third exam. And then I get an email from this man congratulating me on my hard work and saying he's proud of me. I low key cried. He's the only professor I've had who makes me feel seen.
He's alright. That is really the best i can describe him as
Didn't really learn anything and didn't really find anything useful. The second and third exams are quite difficult, but there was a large curve. It's not difficult to recieve an A in the class if you work for it.
Didn't really enjoy the class or find it useful. The second and third exams were quite difficult and I found it super frustrating how we couldn't view our exams or see our originals scores before the curves. It's not difficult to receive an A, you just have to study for it.
I took the online version. Getting an A is definitely possible if you study hard and are good at math. overall the class is useless and as he says, you have to think like him. I didn't really learn anything that wasn't either already common sense or that could be used outside of this class. but a good thing is that that there's a lot of ex credit
Rao is a super chill guy who you can tell is passionate about statistics and making sure his students succeed. I'm not a huge fan of statistics since I'm better with numbers but as long as you read the chapters and do the example problems this class should be a breeze.
If you read the book and come to lecture you will be fine. The difficulty will sneak up on you so you better stay on top of your readings. Lazy students will have an issue with this class, others won't. Simple as that.
this professor was really amazing! he made stat 100 actually enjoyable and gave a lot of extra credit. prepares you very well for the exam and cares about his students.
My roommate and I took stats together. She was online, I was in person. She didn't like Prof Rao, but she never talked to him. You have to go to class or office hours and actually talk to him. He is so caring and supportive and will make time to help you. He just has a million students so if you don't talk to him it feels like he doesn't care.
Gives LOTS of extra credit and highly recommends reading the chapter before coming to class. In-class lectures are a bit boring, and he rushes through topics at times. He can be nice, he has his moments where he is stern (phones away, no talking, don't do assignments last minute, etc.) The first exam 2 proctorU while the others were CBTF.
Homework included a quiz and practice problems after every lecture and weekly problems and a data set quiz.
He makes the test much more complicated then it needs to be for a 100 level class. I had to study a good amount for a topic that seems like common sense. I took the online version of the class. Its easy to complete one week worth of homework the day before its due if you are on a time crunch. If your going to take this class you need patience.
Hard but useful especially if you are in a lab
I thought this class was impossible to pass since I failed my first exam, but what had helped was going to office hours with getting that help. Ask questions. I made sure to study the whole week coming up to the exam date. He is a caring professor and if you need to talk to him. Also make sure to do all the extra credit, and there will be curves.
I'm not a math person and this course was not at all easy, but I liked Prof Rao's book. Some of it was confusing but it also didn't really have a lot of confusing math. Go to every office hours, I started after quiz 2 and wish I went all summer. The TAs are really helpful. Prof Rao also is really understanding and easy to email.
Took his class over the summer and online. If you have the time and need the credit, I recommend it. You definitely will find yourself studying for the exams, but again, if you have the time, it's not too hard.
Not an easy class, but it's very clear exactly what you need to do to get an A.
SUPER caring, seems like a great guy outside of class. As a teacher, he was very difficult for me to learn from personally, and I went to almost every lecture. His teaching method was far too slow in the beginning and far too quick at the end imo.
Rao was genuinely one of my favorite professors I had my freshman year--he really cared that his students learned the content. I was sometimes confused so I would go to office hours and that was always very helpful. You can tell he really cares about his work, I have lots of respect for him as a person and educator.
Prof. Rao is the best. If you need to take stat 100, take it with him!!
If you want to talk with a professor like two human beings, If you want a professor who sees you as a person and not just a student, If you want a professor who cares about you and your well being, You want Professor Rao.
PROFESSOR RAO IS THE GOAT!
Easy A , very good intro course for stats. Lectures are very easy to understand, but most of the information was intuitive. Few assignments, quizzes were easy, and he gave late credit for a lot of work. Midterm and final were a lot harder and will catch you off guard if you aren't properly prepared. Very sympathetic, understanding, and kind.
He talks quickly during the lectures, and I had a hard time understanding. However, if you do the surveys and study hard for the exams, you will be ok. Most of the content sounds made up and fake. My advice is to hold on and lock in. The only thing that really stuck with me was that compression socks may or may not make me run faster.
Professor Rao is a great guy, but his class made no sense most of the time. Lots of the answers to questions will be "maybe" or "it depends" which is annoying. Midterms get harder and harder so be prepared to study. Watch the lectures online and go to office hours for help. If you fall behind on the material, you've gotta hope for a miracle.
Rao definitely wants you to succeed, but omg, is he confusing. The exams are nothing like what you do in lecture and assignments. They are 10x harder. He has me feeling like I am in a philosophy class, with making us think "ish-ness" and having "maybe" as an answer. All I gained from this class was to be uncertain about everything.
You are going to sit in this class and wonder if any of this is even real. Here's the answer: literally everything feels made up. This is the only math course that I have ever taken where "maybe" was an answer on the exam. Rao wrote the textbook, so you have to think like him to do well on the exams. At heart, he is a good person and means well.
I really like professor Rao, but some of the ideas here at the end are really confusing. He challenges your thinking, which I really like though, even if it is confusing. This is definitely the course that I learned the most from. Exams are doable, just make sure you study hard and go to office hours every week. don't fall behind!
Professor Rao is extremely understanding and reasonable with personal matters. He will make you feel important even in a class of 900. The class is not very difficult and the homeworks/labs are very easy, and PAL surveys allow for a lot of extra credit. He teaches very clearly and provides many resources.
Prof Rao is a great person overall and I will definitly use what I learned for classes/labs. While at points the class gets confusing like "maybe " as a answer, I get that things arent always definite. Even in a giant lecture hall he will try and connect with students as a person and even sends congratulating emails if you did well on a test
Prof Rao is really a caring professor. Sometimes he gets fed up with people being lazy or talking over him, but he does try and seems like a nice guy. Class content is hard, and he does not always explain well, but there are chances for extra credit. Come to office hours too!
I went into this class thinking it would be a traditional, math based course. This was WRONG. There is minimal math- he typically pulls numbers from the air. However, Rao wants his students to think like him and question everything. This is a very conceptual class and if you don't do well with that, good luck and godspeed.
Stats can be intimidating, especially if you're a beginner. However, professor Rao is a great lecturer. He really explains concepts very well and he also makes stats very interesting and applicable. While there is a lot of reading involved, its clear he wants you to succeed and enjoy his class.
Don't take
I was gonna write a horrible review, but then he lowkey gave us a crazy deal: he would raise the weight of our second or third midterm grade, and my 91% bumped to a 99% in the class despite getting a D on the last exam. Rao is not so bad. He is a miracle worker, and he's the GOAT. After a semester of suffering, this made it worth it.
This was literally the worst class I took this semester. If I'm gonna be honest, he makes everything up the whole class he made up himself. He wrote the book in 5 minutes, and you can tell by the number of mistakes he made throughout the book. He refused to help me understand the material, and sent me to the tas who got even more wrong then I did.
Show up to class because he does Iclickers, He does not know how to teach and you basically have to teach yourself the material so take the course online if you can. Always do the surveys.
Why is everyone hating on Rao? If you feel like he didn't help you it's low key your fault. Its definitely a lot though. My roommate and I both took it. She never showed up or read the book so obvi she was always confused and thought Rao is the worst. I actually went to class and took notes and got an A. It's really not bad if you actually try.
the homework doesn't prepare you for what the tests look because the questions are written a lot differently. has resources for you to get help if you need it. He sometimes fails to explain topics that most of the class doesn't understand. must study outside of class to get a good grade!
He does not know how to teach a class well, and this class will take up more time for you than it should. He is a nice person overall, but just a very bad lecturer. He made up this whole class himself, and then when you go to office hours, they don't seem to help. He makes it more confusing than it needs to be because he knows this is just a gen ed
Don't take this class, it's useless info, and he made up the whole book himself. He also can't explain anything at all.
Honestly anyone complaining about this class just didn't put the least amount of effort into this class. He makes it pretty easy to study for the exams as everything is available on canvas. Even if you don't do well on the exams, you can still manage a good grade, for example, my friends got Cs on the tests and still managed to pull out low As.
professor rao is a great guy and very passionate about statistics and this course. he wants his students to get an A, but you do have to try somewhat in order to get it. he gives out a lot of extra credit that adds up at the end of the semester. you could lwk get a high c on every exam and then do all the extra credit and get an A.
While I did get an A+, I think that his teaching needs ALOT work. I self taught myself the whole class because his explanations were confusing. This class took so much more time then it should have. The class would have been so much better if he improved his teaching skills. He was really kind, but just not a good professor at all.
Read before class and his lectures make sense, otherwise it's hard to understand what he is explaining. You have to work to get an A but it's worth it. Everything he teaches shows up in all my other classes. Most valuable gen ed I have ever taken.
Rao is the GOAT. I emailed him because I thought I was going to get a C, I did good on exams but missed a lot of homeworks and never went to class so had like a 0 participation score. He said because my exams grades were better than my homework he was going to adjust my grade to match my exam scores!! I went from a C to an A-. GOAT.
I have mixed feeling on this class. I got an A on all exams but I almost entirely taught myself the material. I didn't find the lectures and his teaching style very helpful and I despise the way he does iClicker. Also the TAs are just as confused as the students. However, Prof Rao really cares about his students and wants to make you think.
Professor Rao seems to get a lot of hate, but I don't think it's warranted. I got a D on my first exam and was frustrated, but then I started reading the book, paying attention in class, and I got an A on the next two exams. Prof Rao is a great guy who's personable and wants to see his students succeed. You'll get out what you put into the class.
Hard class but professor does care a lot. Nice curves and cheatsheets as well as practice before exams. Follow the workbook/textbook and you'll be fine. Would be best to make friends and study in groups to understand the concepts better.
