LOTS of reading, so if you don't like reading you're in trouble. otherwise he's not a bad prof. it's just that the class is boring, kinda like a watered down history class. he likes you have you read chapters out of the book and Articles that he puts on D2L. Not a bad guy though, easy enough.
VERY VERY BORING. Makes you read TONS and has a daily BORING slide show. Was never interested so it's hard to pay attention to him. He is a very nice guy, but also doesnt get grades back in a timely manner. Nice guy, BORING BORING BORING teaching style/class

Professor Her is a nice really and pretty easy professor. There are a lot of readings but most of them are pretty interesting and you go over them in class so you can get by without reading them. I definitely recommend taking him.
Mr. Her is a great teacher. His methods may be lagging in the sense that he uses boring tactics, but overall...he's an easy A and you can get by without EVER reading anything he assigns because you can go over it in class.
I liked the guy. So he had boring lectures..what professor doesn't? Out of all the teachers, I'd recommend taking him. Take that other Indian guy and you're in bad luck! Never read, never showed up for class, and still passed the class.
Her ROCKS! He is a funny guy, lots of cool stories, takes it easy, makes it easy...tests are ridiculous though~multiple choice where all the answers seem correct...average score is a 72%, but the rest of the class is a breeze!
He is a fun guy who obviously enjoys teaching. His classes are always interesting! This is my second class with him.
Hes a good guy but class was a little boring. Tests arent too bad and there are only a couple papers. He also gives extra credit opportunities every once in awhile.
Dr Her is a good professor and likes to teach. Class is somethimes boring but you dont have to go to many if you dont want to because the slides are online, but we watched alot of movies in class and they were on the test. You can pretty much bs your way through the papers which he grades very easily.
Nice teacher. Allows himself to be corrected. You can talk to him and suggest many things (ex. reading assignments) Go over readings in class which is helpful. Enjoyed class. Would like him to teach more courses.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Does an amazing job, if you are a freshman and need a semi-easy class and want to learn a lot of information take this class. Dr. Her does an amazing job easy to talk to and very open to advice on how students learn best, makes the class very entertaining.
He assigns daily reading assignments but you really don't need to read in order to pass the test, only to participate in discussion. Very nice guy. VERY rarely takes attendance. Grades consist of three easy tests and NO FINAL! Kind of hard to understand when he talks fast, but other than that a great teacher. I would reccomend him.
This class was really easy. He is very clear in his lectures, although he goes really fast so its impossible to copy everything down. The tests were fairly easy. It seemed as if we were watching videos every other day. He's really nice & likes to get the class involved. Would definitely recommend, especially if you are looking for an easier A.
really easy class. class was interesting although sometimes it was hard to follow what he said. his lectures are basically off of slides though. no final, but 3 exams and 1 easy personal essay - fairly easy if you study. missed few classes but still got a good grade. RECOMMEND YOU TAKE HIS CLASS!
I really enjoyed this class! It really made me think about racial issues. The teacher was really nice & helpful. We watched a lot of movies & the tests were really easy. To be honest, I skipped almost every Friday & still got an AB
Good teacher although he is kinda hard to understand at times because he talks so fast. Didn't have to go to class Monday, watched videos Wednesday and lecture on Friday that usually got out early. Only 3 tests and an essay. Tests seem like they should be simple but can be a little tricky. Does offer extra credit. I definately recommend him! :)
Very easy class. You're supposed to read, but as long as you attend classes and pay attention to the lectures you are fine. Even if you don't go to class you probably could still do well. Offers some easy extra credit as well.
He is a very helpful professor. Always willing to help and change deadlines. Willing to change the type of test, take home essay is the easiest. Class can be a little boring, but easiness makes it work while. good teacher for SOC 225 too!
LOVE HIS CLASS....
He's a really cool guy who inspires thought on real issues. His lectures consisted of a lot of videos and most days we got out early (I had him tues. thurs. for 1.5 hours). There is quite a bit of reading, but most of the test content comes from that, so it's worth doing. I would definitely recommend him.
Adds experiences into his lectures, and most consist of movies or videos. A lot of reading, but tests are online and fairly easy. I would say its and easy A class.
Two thumbs up
He was very fun. I loved his personal stories that he told, it made things interesting. Watched a lot of movies, but they were very helpful. Readings are pretty easy. Tests are not hard.
Easiest class ever. If you like watching a lot of videos and learning a lot about different cultures I would take this class. Dr. Her is awesome!
It really doesn't matter if you miss a class. Tests are on D2L. He lets you out early, and I've even had a few classes cancelled. Very nice guy and interesting teacher.
He is a very nice and approachable professor and he always makes lectures interesting by adding personal stories. In his class you watch A LOT of movies, but they are all very interesting. His tests (3 total, no final exam) are all online and multiple choice. There are also no papers or other assignments, but there are a lot of required readings.
Easy class. Tests are taken online and you can use notes and the book.
I never went to class because you always get out early anyway and the exams are online. He's interesting but it's not very easy to go to class when you know you will be there for half an hour and then leave. Material is pretty interesting. Overall, good prof.
I never went to class because you always get out early anyway and the exams are online. He's interesting but it's not very easy to go to class when you know you will be there for half an hour and then leave. Material is pretty interesting. Overall, good prof.
Dr. Her is very laid back in class and even said he'd rather not give tests and just have everything be a discussion. 4 online exams are fairly simple and are the only grades for the class. His personal story is very interesting and he is a pretty funny guy too! I definitely recommend taking Dr. Her!
Great teacher and his movies are very interesting. Take him if you can!
Cool and funny guy, easy class. Videos are good and interesting. Online tests so you can use notes and stuff. Easy A to satisfy Gen Ed course
Vincent no longer does the test online which is the reason why I took this class in the first place. If you want to do all the readings and study a lot for the tests, take this class.
Interesting person to listen to. However, many readings & need to study for tests a lot. Questions on tests go along with his views. What he puts on powerpoints and notes does not go along with tests. Hard.
Graded only on 3 tests and attendanceparticipation, lots of assigned reading but he covers the same material in lecture so if you take notes during lecture the tests will be a breeze. Has many interesting stories and visual aidsvideos. I would take this class again.
I wasn't looking forward to taking 225, but Her made it bearable. His stories help a lot with some dry material. A lot of stuff is basic knowledge but he is very informative and breaks up power points with interesting videos.
He is a great person, but when it comes to exams his questions are based on his opinions. This makes is difficult to do well on his tests. Since there are only three exams and participation you need to do well on the exams... Offers minimal to zero test prep or study guides. Also, tests are now IN CLASS and not online. Be aware of older reviews!
The tests are mostly based off readings and the readings are incredibly long. He does take attendance, but overall not the worst class ever. He can be funny sometimes and tells really cool stories about when his family came to the U.S.
Overall, Dr. Her was a really cool guy and so easy to talk to. His course was difficult, and my hand almost fell off every day from trying to keep up with his lectures, but as long as you study hard and understand the lectures, you'll be fine.
Very boring long lectures. The readings take so much time and the exams can be confusing. Very nice guy though
Professor Her was a really great professor. There are only 3 multiple choice tests, and his lectures were very interesting. He provides the class with a lot of good perspectives and ideas about all cultural topics. I thought this class would be boring, but Professor Her made me actually want to go to class.
Incredibly nice guy and great professor. His lectures are easy to follow and as long as you take notes and pay attention receiving an A is simple. He gave everyone a 100% on the only paper he assigned and gives extra credit opportunities. Highly recommend.
Dr. Her is a great guy, but his class was difficult to succeed in. He doesn't have a lot in the grade book, and for his tests, anything is possible to show up on them. It was hard to study because there was so much involved in each unit. The topics were interesting, but class was hard.
MOST boring class I have ever taken. Dr. Her reads off his dry slides for 1h 20mins which elicits no class participation. The questions on his tests range from incredibly easy to completely obscure with little middle ground. On the essays, everyone gets bad grades with the same comments because he does not specify what he is asking for. AVOID.
Prof. Her only gives a few opportunities to get points in the grade book. Tests are very specific and there are only a few. He just reads off of the slides for most of the lectures but attendance is counted. He's a really sweet guy though, and the class probably isn't as dull as most history courses. If you're a good test taker, you'll be golden.
Dr. Her tells some inspirational stories; however, his class is not very organized. One day you will be learning about slavery and the next it will be about space travel. There are three exams each about 45 questions worth 100pts. There is one assignment worth 25pts. Then there are participation points based off of signing in each day at class.
He's a good professor and obviously knows the material, but can be boring and the lectures feel really long. You just have to write a couple papers and do good on the tests and you'll pass. Attendance is graded.
Professor Her is a really nice guy, but his lectures are long and boring. Taking notes on everything/most things is just not necessary. He usually gives a study guide before tests. If you have a reading discussion day there's no lecture, and you just go over questions. We were graded on 2 tests, 2 papers, and a final the week before finals week.
He's a little hard to understand but if you pay attention you will do fine
He's pretty easy, but there are few things to be graded on. I think there were only three assignments we had. We had a lot of discussions in group and lots of readings, but overall, it was an easy class.
Professor Her is a really nice guy but his class is just him reading off slides for an hour and a half. We are graded on 3 tests and 2 papers but he does not grade the papers fast at all so you won't know your grade until the end of the semester. You will have to read a lot outside of class but overall it's a fine Gen Ed.
Her loves to lecture for the entire class. As someone who is not super interested in history, this class was incredibly boring and difficult to pay attention in. Only a few assignments that aren't hard and 3-4 tests. I am not great in history so I didn't do fantastic on these, but if you're able to pay attention and study you'll do fine.
Dr . Her was a pretty good professor. Nothing was too difficult as long as you submit your work on time and show up to class and take notes, you'll pass the class easily. The lectures are long and boring but are beneficial towards the tests at the end of each section. Gives a study guide for each test which is nice.
Her is a great lecturer if you have the stomach to sit through over an hour of just him talking. I heavily enjoyed his lectures despite their length, but then again, what lectures are engaging to sit in for over an hour? I love how he was able to relate his own experiences to the lecture.
Gives clear guidelines and makes it easy to get an A if you look at the rubric. A lot of the class is discussing relevant topics which makes it really enjoyable. Only 2 tests but you do write a decent amount of papers but they aren't bad.
Super nice prof, really helpful. This class was so easy, but there was a lot of work to do. Super interesting class and I learned a lot, but didn't enjoy it for a FYS because a lot of the other choices were way easier.
I was expecting this to be an easy first year seminar, but it ended up being an in depth history class and we did first year seminar things outside of class on top of the "history" class. Overall, he graded things pretty easily and does round up if its close. Tests were difficult for a FYS.
I sit through his lectures and have no idea what is going on. He never talks loud enough, puts so much info on one slide, and expects us to be able to read and understand everything. Doesn't give us enough time on papers either.
Really straight forward course with low difficulty on tests. Dr. Her is a really kind guy and seems legitimately interested in the topic. There are readings biweekly, but they're not difficult.
This class was a struggle to get through. Lectures were very hard to pay attention to because they were long and consisted of a lot of documentaries. Professor Her is very passionate about this subject, but he was a difficult grader. We had four written assignments and he did not give any feedback on how to improve from essay to essay.
His grading criteria seems very arbitrary and he doesn't give good feedback. Also, nothing is graded quickly so it is impossible to know your actual grade in the class.
Overall, this was a good class and I learned a lot about Hmong history and Hmong Americans. Dr. Her is very passionate and kind. His lectures are quite long but are broken up with informative videos. My one gripe with the class was that the papers were extremely long, especially the final research paper which had a 5,000 word minimum (16+ pages).
Lots of readings assigned but as long as you go to class and take notes you should be fine. He gives out study guides which are really handy and although they are lengthy if you can explain the topics on it you will be fine for tests. Good teacher and willing to work with you
Great prof, but the material was too much for FYS. I enjoyed some of the content, but 7 papers and 3 (hard) exams was overkill for a 100 class. I had to work hard for an A and I wish I would have known beforehand that this class would be exclusively lectures and no peer collaboration. He is very willing to accommodate to your needs which helped.
Vincent is a nice guy and is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, but the work that he requires you to do for a FYS class is just two much. 7 papers and 3 exams and a reading from a different book every week. If you don't show up to class or don't do any of the assigned readings, good luck.
Professor Her is a nice guy, but do not take him for a FYS class! There are so many better professors to take. This class is a in depth history class, with FYS things on the side. 3 exams and 7 papers is way to much for a FYS class. If you are looking him up before the drop deadline, drop him and pick up a new professor.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about this class. You need to attend lectures or at least read the power points and read the assigned reading to pass the tests. Graded on three tests and three papers.
This is HARD for a FYS. You have tests that are hard for a 100 class, and I do not recommend. Most FYS do not have tests like his, and overall he just reads from slides the entire class time.
Was not good at all. Tests were graded very low with no curve. Took over 6 weeks to receive grades. Very poor class would not recommend taking.
Professor Herr is an incredible and kind professor, but it is without a doubt that his classes are hard, and he grades even harder. If you read the books and take notes, you should be alright.
I thoroughly enjoyed his class, but beware, he is a very tough grader. He's incredibly knowledgeable and nice, but he is a very tough grader. The exams are take-home for a reason. The papers are also hard. Not a lot of chances to get points so every point matters. Hard to figure out what he wants in the papers or on the exams to get full points.
Professor Her is very nice and cares about his students! His classes are rather lecture heavy, but usually we end class early. The readings aren't required, and neither is class. His exams are a little hard, but if you know the material well, you will be fine. He also sometimes assigned essays close to the deadline, but you can get extensions.
Very caring professor who is passionate about what he teaches. The course material isn't too difficult however there are not many grades put in for the class, pretty much just the few papers assigned and exams. Can be difficult to get grade up after one bad assignment. But overall a good professor.
I would often find myself dreading going to class just because they are very lecture heavy and he can be a bit redundant while he is speaking so the lectures drag on. His classes are usually 1.5 hour classes as well, so by the end im finished with all the NYT Games.
Lectures feel extremely long (1.5-hour lectures). He goes over a lot of content on PowerPoint and can be very redundant so listening to him talk for a while gets pretty boring.
Solid professor, ensures resources for success, but consistently takes well over a month to grade assignments. Even with two days left in the semester, a one-page paper from a month ago remains ungraded.
Dr. Her is an amazing professor. Very kind & funny. Lectures can be long, but any 1.5hr class feels long. Very passionate about the subject and teaching. Tests were super easy - if you pay attention in class and do the study guides, you'll be fine. He also offered loads of extra credit at the end of the semester. Very easy & enjoyable class.
Professor Vincent Her is a very fair grader. We have 3 exams, no final. I attended about half of the lectures so had to study a good amount for the exams, but they were not too bad. We have 4 essays which are pretty straightforward. He also gives us 10 extra credit points for attending class here and there.
Vincent Her is an astounding professor who truly cares about his students. He is very passionate about his work and encourages students to do the same. He is a pretty straightforward teacher. The class is test-heavy, but he gives extra credit. I learned a lot through his lectures and readings and never hesitated to ask questions.
His lectures tend to be very long and hard to sit through. This class is soley based on papers and exams - it can be hard to get a good grade if you don't study or apply content well. Attendance isn't mandatory and lecture slides are posted. Also, he takes forever to grade things.
Dr. Her was very kind and passionate about anthropology, although, lectures are very hard to sit through and he has little enthusiasm so it's common to zone out. He is very kind and understanding, but the tests can be hard and take a toll on your grade quickly. Make sure to go to class so you get some grasp of the material to not fall behind.
Very lecture heavy can get boring, always a group discussion after which takes up most of class but honestly should only take 10 minutes. graded by only a handful of things and the test are pretty hard if you didn't pay attention, do the readings, or come to class. Attendance mandatory but you get three misses, very nice guy but pretty vague w/info
Overall, he's a nice professor, but the one thing that bothers me the most is that there are not very many opportunities for points. He's also a tough grader. Most of the assignments are essays and all of his exams are also essay exams, which can be very subjective because you're never sure if you're giving him the answers he wants.
he's a nice guy, and clearly knowledgeable and smart, but every class I've taken with him goes the same and is disappointing. heavy on reading and regurgitating. there's so much material and you have to reference it allot. lots of prompts and test questions are subjective and opiniated, which cuts the academic value of the classes heavily.
Overall, his class was very much lecture heavy and he would go over the material once in an hour and a half lecture and expect you to know everything, he only has a few tests and the class average on those was around 75
Very understaning professor, is willing to work with you if you put in the effort to reach out/communicate your needs. Grade for the class is 4 module assignments (short-ish essays) and 3 tests. So not a lot to work with but he provides materials and study guides.
He is very nice and helpful. It is very lecture-heavy, where all he does is talk/reads off his slides the whole time. LOTS of reading, and the lectures are boring they are important for your test score. The study guides are 7 pages long, while the test is only 35 questions. The tests were rough and the class averaged below a 74 for all of them.
