Nice guy, but is very choppy with his lessons. He has an intersting flow to his class that seem spontaneous rather then planned.
He's a decent teacher, but defenitly nothing to write home about. He is very unclear when explaining things in class, and he loves to jump around.
Basically Finite Mathematics is a damn easy course. Koehler is an interesting guy and has a weird teaching style. But in the end I realized that Vincent Koehler is a legend. Also he allows cheat sheets on the Final exam...
he is a good teacher, not the most pleasant but decent. he loves to give quizzes and he gets to know every student and their habits. to do well for the grade and his liking you must show up. his exams are are not too bad so long as you look at the quizzes and class examples.
I took the class for three weeks but I had to leave it because Koehler was not helpful. I don't do well in math (at all) and I asked for some extra help and the guy just didn't seem to care. I didn't do well on a Quiz, and he asked to see me after class and essentially blamed me for getting a D because I have an LD in Math. Not helpful and cold.

Very good professor. Gets to know everyone by name and their habits. Very helpful, if you ever need help with anything he always makes time for you. Very nice, and has a good teaching style
Gets to know everyone by name. Allows quiz and test make ups. Encourages getting help from him
I admit, I was being talkative one day; but instead of giving me an assigned seat in an e-mail, he could've talked to me about it like I'm not a first grader.
went to him for help and was rejected. a teacher who essentially likes to see students fail. unless you're awesome at math, don't expect to enjoy his course.
Very bad teaching style, ALL he does is take examples from the book or that he made up and that is the whole class, just a bunch of examples. What makes it bad is that he does not explain how he came to the answers and when he does it quick and not done in a good way. Instead of showing few fully explained examples he chooses to do many examples gi
Very bad teaching style. Instead of showing few fully explained examples he chooses many examples giving the answers in rapid-fire without explanations. He also is an intense stickler on exams/quizzes. You need to show all steps in the exact format as he would or you will get tons of points taken off. DO NOT take Vincent, take Joseph Kudrle.
Koehler is a really nice guy. Definitely approachable and the class is easy like pie.
Not a very effective teacher.I would suggest taking this class with someone else. He takes points off quizzes for no specified reason. Although he does let you use a notecard on the test it is not helpful because he pretty much interprets your answer however he feels like. I did not enjoy this class.
worst college professor i have experianced thus so far. i did will in the class but this teacher can suck a fat one.
He is hard to follow sometimes in class but is always very willing to help one-on-one and I did that a lot. Wants everyone to get it even if it doesn't seem that way in class sometimes. Four tests and many quizzes. You must do the homework to get a good grade (and it doesn't count towards your grade).
easy class, but not with him! I dropped it real quick b/c of him. He was not helpful, nor did I like his style. I asked him if we could use notes for our tests and he looked at me like i was crazy. Take nichole caisse- her class was good- she was really nice and understanding.
easy class, easy tests and quizzes especially with a notecard. very good professor, how can you not like such an easy class?
I admit hes really fussy and picky about things, and his quizzes are in squares, but note card for test is helpful and I think he really knows his subject. Kind of goofy but really nice!
Great guy and teacher, and the class is pretty easy. Even if you're not calculus savvy, he explains everything well, and everything is based off of lecture. I didn't buy a book and did very well. He is helpful, but works at a fast pace. He lets you have a note card for the exams which is sweet. He's funny and goofy too.
Tests and quizzes are easy. Lowest quiz is dropped. Usually 3 exams. Lets you have notecard for every exam. Teaches you to do stuff in the calculator, which I think is great, and also makes you learn. I took calc back in high school and I didn't learn a thing. Don't listen to the bad reviews, take math 20 with this dude.
great teach, knows a lot about the subject. good teaching skills, but if you get confused he's extremely helpful at answering questions, in class or has office hours. cheat sheets for tests and exams...'nuff said. take him, he's $$.
Lets you use a notecard for the test but expect him to throw in little tricks...gotta know ur stuff for the tests but overall a good prof
good professor def knows his stuff. keeps you on your toes in class because he will call on you even if your hand isnt raised. drops lowest quiz, lets you have a cheat sheet for tests. nice guy and offers help if you dont undersstand something. i'm taking calc 20 with him next semester so i guess he's someone i'd recommend
Really odd guy., but nice enough. Took calc before, never studied for a quiz or a test, did fine. Sweet neon jacket.
Listen this guy is a tool...no joke. His exams are late 7-9 (soo annoying) and his grades are bs!!!
great teacher. Not too easy but he'll make you learn your stuff. Nice guy. Would take another class with him again. Be ready to answer questions
He is a really good teacher and is always will to clarify. I suck at math and he made alot of stuff really clear for me.

Second semester with Koehler. Continues to teach material very well. Quizzes, tests are fair, no homework, attendance not mandatory but recommended you go otherwisr you feel lost the next day. Dont really use textbook. Great professor
Lets you use a note card for tests but he throws so many stupid tricks in. Plays favorites. You have to know your stuff. Don't even bother buying the book. GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY!
After taking Calc 19 and 20 with him I figured Stats 141 w/ him would be a no brainer. I was wrong. It was clear he's never taught this material before. First half of semester I was fine, but the second I had no idea what was going on. Did a horrible job explaining the material and everyone in the class felt lost. Good prof. for calc, not for stats
AWFUL.
Good at explaining concepts; you need to attend every class to do well.
Lambasted me one day for showing my work on the wrong page, which I thought was rude. Go to class and take notes and you'll get a good grade. As far as him being nice or friendly or approachable, not so much. Didn't like the class, didn't like him but he's not a BAD teacher and you can use a notecard on the tests.
He gives awful examples that are of very little help on the tests. I am not good in math but went every day and took notes for the second half of the semester and did poorly. His grading system is a joke and his tests are far more difficult than what he teaches the class. Demeaning, unclear and ineffective teacher.
i really dont know why koelher gets such bad press on here. i loved his class. the only reason why people complain about him is because he really doesnt tolerate BS in his class, and he isnt afraid to call you out on it. go to class, thats all you need. he gives a lot of examples, which are exactly what is on the tests.
Excellent math teacher. Extremely clear and will answer any questions you have. As long as you do the homework you will do fine in class, but you will fail if you don't. Anyone that doesn't think he is a good teacher is crazy.
REALLY good teacher! teaches things very clearly and goes through everything. He is helpful and good with questions. He is also very nice and fair. I suggest this class for anyone who struggles with math!
He's GREAT. Very straightforward and always willing to go over problems that anyone didn't get. Highly recommend him.
takes notes on tablet pc and posts online after class. exams are at night, you get the next class off. get to use notecard on exams. not very good at getting in touch. stood me up, and stood up other people for 1 on 1 sessions. has a "you should know this" attitude and if you dont hell explain it in a sarcastic way. some like him. not sympathetic.
Great professor, loved his style of teaching. Notes posted online are a huge help.
VK is ballin
At first I didnt really like him because he likes things done his way. Very organized. I got five points off a quiz for not showing simple addition. But he is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. Explains things so clearly and very easy to follow along. Go to class and you will do fine. Really nice guy when you get to it.
I did not like him. His way of doing things is just weird and I didn't learn very well from his style of teaching. Also, he's really boring.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER!!
He is a great person and a good professor. I am horrible at math but actually doing okay in his class because he explains everything really well and goes over it more than once so you get it. What he goes over in class is exactly whats on the test and you get to use a note card to help you. Calls on random people but it makes you pay attention!
Koehler is nice guy. He trys to make things as simple as possible, and you still end up learning a lot. Very clear and very willing to help students when they don't understand. If you go to class, you'll pass the course.
Loved him! He posts the class notes on his website - very helpful. Best math teacher i've had. Highly recommended!
Great guy! always willing to help. picky grader but all of his tests were exactly like his notes that he puts online everyday. No attendance required. I highly recommend this guy.
red sox nation
I did poorly the first time i took basic stastical methods with koehler. He insisted on using a graphing calculator for everything, and rather than explaining how or why things were done, said do this, push that, and look. I later retook stat 141 with brian macpherson, who did not require a graphing calculator, and he taught me stats right.
Did not understand calculus one bit before this class. Loved Koehler! His teaching style really worked for me, and I have not been able to say that in a verrryy long time.
Professor Koehler is an interesting guy. At first i hated him partially because hes a bit odd (hence the pic) and second because i have never had a more picky teacher. But i have begun to like him, hes a good in-class teacher and gives lots of quizes to keep you studying and on track for tests. Go to class..
Mr. Koehler is an awesome teacher. Occasionally he can be picky in the way he wants answers written but it's beneficial for the student and himself. Calc is much easier when he explains it and he's willing to help if needed.
Going to Math 17 is the best way to start my day. Professor Koehler, ROCKS he is the best math teacher i have ever had. He explains things really well. I have never been good at math until he stepped, oh so gracefully into my life. His fashion choices are also always great and brighten my day as well. Over all props to you ma man.
He's a decent teacher overall - not incredibly hard. But he rarely explains things well, and often has a certain way he wants things written -- if you don't write it his way, you're wrong. VERY condescending to students who don't understand, acts like it's the most obvious thing ever how could you not understand...
Prof. Koehler was one of the worst professors I have ever had to deal with. He was rude to students and made you feel like a complete idiot if you didnt understand his ridiculuous teaching methods/chicken-scrach notes. Also, his tests were extremely unfair. He would put multiple choice and short answer questions instead of actual math problems.
Professor Koehler is a great math teacher. Dont listen to the comments below. He's the best math teacher I have ever had, you really learn math from this guy. A lot of people think he's rude, but thats just his way and he's actually quite nice. Very fair, very smart. Just make sure you go to his class and do the work and you'll be fine.
I had him for a 2 1/2 week summer course. He came off abrasive at the beginning. Grows on you. However, he is extremely knowledgeable and will explain it until you get it. He was well suited to teach this condensed course, and I feel like I learned a lot.
He is a good teacher and if you do not understand something he will go over it until you do. He posts notes online but I understood everything very well and then skipped one class and my grades started going down so I would recomend going to class. Overall, I enjoyed his teaching style.
Vince is a good teacher. Although he has his mandatory ways in which you need to write things, it's not a hassle. The people that think he doesn't explain things well probably only went to class once or twice. Vince is really good about explaining things until you understand it. His classes are difficult because they stretch your thinking.
Not exactly a bad teacher, but not great either. Very strict, dry, and particular. I would not recommend him if you can avoid it.
Very clear about what he's looking for, easy to get a good grade if you put the effort in. Not unreasonable about expectations, online notes very helpful. Occasionally unreasonable amounts (or difficult) online homework that does not pertain to class.
Koehler was an interesting professor to say the least. Do all of the homework. Make sure the way you do the problems are EXACTLY the way he does it in lecture and you'll be fine. He was very picky in terms of how you do problems. He likes his way and no other.
This guy is odd but he's still the man!! Slightly eccentric and a little condescending but he'll help you until you understand the material. Just be sure to do the problems his way and HIS WAY ONLY! Doing the problems his way have greatly improved how I do algebra in a Calc class. Definitely recommend him if you've had picky teachers before.
This guy is a really great math professor--if you put in the effort, so will he. He works really hard and goes above and beyond to make it so that, if you put the work in, you will do well. He moves a little fast, but all in all is really good. He's pretty funny too. If you sit in the front, do the homework and study, you'll do great.
He explains everything in the most difficult ways there are infinitely better ways to do things. In addition he lets the online book rule the class! Switch out if possible.
Knows what he is talking about in class. However argues with the text book. Must do things 'his way' opposed to the way the book does them to score well. Also says no matter what you know going into the class it is wrong. Otherwise middle of the road for math instructors. Nothing special but deffinately could be worse
Fantastic Professor, very knowledgable, very useful. What a great class!
Really nice guy. If you put the effort in, so will he. Definitely go see him if you need help, I'd take a class with him again
Great teacher, really helpful if you keep at it. All of his notes are posted online.
One of the single best professors of my life, I have taken his drive for elegant mathematics forward with me through my graduate degree. I studied biology as an undergrad. Koehler is a king of professors.
Terrible teacher
Just pay attention in class and you will be fine. The math isn't easy but he tells you exactly what you need to know and how to do it. He tells you what will be on quizzes and tests and will do plenty of practice problems in class. Nice guy and a great professor. Don't buy a textbook you will never use it!
Makes constant mistakes while doing problems. Computer issues delay the class. Only does problems with little explaining why they are different or how to go about them. No textbook use, only do it his way. Khan Academy helped sometimes. Quizzes good, but tests are difficult. Didn't care about my failing grade when I asked him to helpwhat to do.
Tests are tough but he posts all of his notes online and gives you extra credit on webassign if you complete it the night before its due
This class did not contain the easiest material, however, Koehler's passion for math is evident through his teaching and lectures. His notes are all online and he is friendly and always willing to help as long as you ask for it! He makes me love math even more! Great teacher!!!
total bro, loved every minute
Such a cool guy, very good clear teacher, explains material very well. Best Math teacher Ive ever had, so good I took all 3 calc classes with him. Tests and quizzes are straight forward and fair and he is known to crack a joke on occasion. Very "awkward funny grampa"-esque. Highly recommend him.
Koehler is a really smart guy and teaches his classes well. I had him for Calc 2 and he did a good job of teaching a difficult class. He is always ready to answer your questions. He's pretty big on paying attention and does call on people randomly at times but overall he's a good professor.
HOMEWORK AFTER EVERY CLASS! Its the worst & its usually due the next day (less than 24 hrs). Goes too fast & spends too much time deriving formulas & not enough examples of how to use them. He does allow cheat sheets on exams, but quizzes are very short so its easy to get a lot of points off on just 3 questions.
He's very knowledgeable on the topic and clearly has a passion for teaching it. His quirky personality definitely makes class more interesting (unless of course you're the butt of the joke) but never the less I really enjoyed the class. His tests aren't exactly easy but they are always fair in my opinion.
He calls you out by name to answer questions in class. He takes attendance. Not everything he teaches is easy to understand.
He gives students opportunities to speak in class. He calls you out by name to answer questions. But you have to focus on what he talks in class. If you get distracted, I bet you won't be able to answer his questions. Very fun that some of answer is "I don't know." He is not hard, but also is not "easy." So just focus in class. Good luck!
Some people hate him and some people like him a lot. If you are looking to really learn the material and put effort into it, he is a great lecturer. Definitely knows his stuff and can explain material well. Don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions.
I really liked his straight-forward way of teaching. He introduced notes and then gave a bunch of examples to learn from. Homework was extremely helpful, take your time to understand what is going on because test questions are pretty much identical. Can be sarcastic, just beware that some people seriously hate his guts.
Very good professor in the classroom, didn't get a whole lot of time outside the classroom but he is available when you need him. Very organized, well run classes.
WORST MATH PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. He doesnt understand u when u ask him a question, picks on u in class, picks favorites, and is horrible at explaining things and answering questions like 'why' u do a certain step. I have no idea why this man is a math teacher. Probably the most boring lecturer and he's very egotistical. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
You might here that Koehlers class is hard but it isn't if you put in the work. He has amazing lectures and keeps you focussed by learning your name and calling on you randomly in class. All of the questions we do in class are on the tests. If you put in the work you will do great. Don't be scared to take him.
Koehler is an excellent professor. He is always willing to answer questions and further clarify material. If you take this class be ready for long nightly homework and difficult tests. The class is hard, but I learned more this semester with him than any previous professor.
Gives homework nearly every night but gives optional extra credit for every assignment. Always announces quizzes and tests and lets you know what is on them. He does randomly call on students to answer questions, but he always gives the option to pass. Pretty good guy, is helpful if you need it. Very good teacher, I learned a lot in his class.
I have no idea how he has such a high rating on this site. Koehler has a very specific way that he wants you to do things in his class, and if you don't do it exactly the way he wants your in trouble. Expect homework every night through the webassign portal which isn't a great program. He seems to refuse to accommodate student's busy schedules.
He knows his stuff, can explain it well, and makes it very clear what he expects you to know If you show up to the lectures. Make an effort to understand the course material and follow his lectures, and you'll be fine. He is clear about the dates of tests and quizzes, as well as what will be on them. He lets you bring a notecard to tests.
Super attentive and is funny. His humor is sarcastic, which is the best kind. The material is difficult but if you go to office hours and put the time into it you will do fine. He is more than willing to help students whenever they have a question. Honestly, if you are not a jerk to him he will not be a jerk to you. I would take the class again
It is safe to say that he is the worst professor I have ever had. I would never recommend taking his class. He grades unfairly which is something I didn't think was possible in a math class until I met him. For example writing the "infinity" symbol isn't a sufficient answer without the + sign. I never disliked a teacher as much as I do him.
He's a tough grader. At times I felt bad for the people in the class who didn't already know calculus. There is nightly homework, and although attendance isn't mandatory you wouldn't pass the class without going.
Koehler is a solid professor. He has a very dry sense of humor and doesn't tolerate whining, and he will make sure you understand the basics of calc 1. He doesn't grade based on attendance but he does keep note of who is present.
I can definitely see Vincent's passion for mathematics and that made his class much more enjoyable.
Vincent is hands down one of my favorite professors ever. Very abrasive personality but off the charts funny, I look forward to his lectures. You have to be able to take a verbal beating when called on, but once you get to know him its pretty fun. Yes, lots of homework but its a math class so what would you expect. Great teaching methods.
Koehler is great. he is very funny and gives the classic math lecture. most people will rate him harshly bc they are too lazy to do homework and do not like how he calls on people in class to keep everyone focused. otherwise he is very passionate and caring and is good at answering questions. was very helpful in office hours and is a fair grader.
Professor Koehler is a wonderful professor whose lectures are entertaining and is very knowledgeable in the subject matter. I took his course for Calc 1 and Calc 2, and I can say he is one of my favorite professors at UVM. His expectations are very clear, he is a fair grader, and I would recommend this class to anyone.
One of the worst math teachers Ive ever had. I get why some people like him, but his teaching just doesnt make sense to me. SUPER harsh grader. I took calc 2 with him, basically had to dedicate all my time to his homework. Doesnt explain things, just says theyre obvious. No assignments from the book but you need to read it to understand him.
One of the best math professors I've had. Shows you clear steps how to solve problems. Class consists of fast teaching but then tons of practice problems. He also has a great system for class participation where he randomly asks students to help with problems but allows you to pass whenever you want.
Not satisfied with letting the challenge of math be enough, Koehler requires you to learn a near-religious litany. Infinity is not enough; you have to say + or - infinity. He requires 3 + 2 not 2 +3 and will take off half the points if you forget. He wants you to produce a paper he can grade quickly. He does NOT care if you learn math. AWFUL!
Koehler expects you to know everything in advance of class. If you've taken Calc before and did well, then you'll be fine. If you've never taken calc, drop this course. I wish I had- I did every homework, went to every class, studied for hours, and did poorly. Not a sympathetic teacher. Not great at teaching. Class is very trig heavy, be prepared.
Professor Koehler was a great professor with a great personality. He made it clear what he expected in terms of notation on exams and quizzes. Exams were reasonable, although the final exam was pretty difficult. Quizzes were relatively straightforward and the lowest quiz grade was dropped. Koehler made Calc II interesting. Would recommend.
Koehler is somewhat of an anomaly. He'll either love or hate you and his tastes are dependant on arbitrary and difficult to understand factors. You won't be able to change his opinion of you and he makes up his mind the second you open your mouth. His tests are graded extremely harshly and more so if he doesn't like you. Very rude and not helpful.
I took calc before had which was super helpful. He calls out on students randomly throughout class. Assigns online homework after every class that are long & annoying to complete. Allows you a 3x5 notecard on every test & 8x11.5 sheet of paper on the final. Fair grader & attendance not mandatory but go anyways since class notes alone aren't enough
What you do is what you get. No surprises on tests and quizzes. Fair.
Koehler is a really great lecturer. Try not to miss because seeing him do the notes in class is super helpful, but they're always posted online if you miss. He is a tough grader so you might get a 90 on a test because of a few small errors spread throughout. While it can be tough at times, I'm learning all the concepts well and didn't feel burdened
Although Calculus 1 is the basic of the basic stuff, a lot of students ask so many ridiculous questions, but even I get angry, he never does. He explains well and tries different way if students couldn't understand as many times as he can which is time-wasting, but this is students' problem. Homework, quiz & test are super easy. Hillarious, kind
My favorite teacher so far at uvm! You definitely want to be on his good side, but either way he really cares about your well being! Cold at first but warms up especially if you have him two semesters in a row. His teaching is clear and his tests are straight forward. Going to miss him!
He is a good professor! he is caring, takes his time to explain things, puts effort into making the class participate. Speak up in class, and he will be your friend.
This guy is great. Good edgy sense of humor makes class fun-ish. He teaches very straightforward, exactly what you need to know and does many examples to back it up. He does give a good amount of homework and his tests are harder than what he gives you in class or on the homework. Gotta work for your grade but he is a good teacher and you'll learn.
This guy was straight up mean, my way or the highway type of deal. not great at teaching clearly and teaches a different calc one than others
