I feel bad for him. He's new this year and he definitely needs to work on how to be a good teacher. He mumbles to himself and lacks confidence. He spent 3 lectures going over one thing that I learned clearly at SI hours in less than 15 minutes. He confuses you, and even he gets super confused and the class had to help him how to do it....hw is EC.
This class is so easy only because of the fact that he is a poor professor. It's sad sometimes how he doesn't even understand what he is teaching himself. The students seem to know more and they have to correct him constantly. He goes over the midterms right before and he gives tons of extra credit. Easy A
I felt nervous for him when he started his first few lectures, but only because he was a new professor. He explains things in depth, especially during his office hours when there's not as many people. I recommend that you rely heavily on the text book material and look over the midterms before the final.
Dr. Lavallo is a really nice guy. Unfortunately he is not very good at teaching. He was unprepared for most of his lectures. He confused students and even got confused himself. His first midterm was fair, second midterm was hard, and final was hard! if your good at learning on your own take him if not find another instructor!
Nice guy, struggled at first. It was his first quarter teaching, so maybe nerves got the best of him. He became much better as he gained confidence. Was very helpful in office hours when it was only a few students.
Struggled at first, but a good guy, who's willing to help...
Not a very good professor for a beginning chemistry class. Many lost interest and did not attend.
He is a nice guy and all, but he lacks organization. He is very helpful during office hours!! SO GO! His first midterm is cake, second midterm is hard but i still managed to get an A and final is cake as well. He goes over the kinds of problems he will test you on before the exams so there isnt a reason why you shouldnt pass.
Professor Lavallo is very considerate. He's curved the grades at least three times in one quarter. In the beginning he kinda sucks at answering questions, but by a bit before middle he clarifies better. His office hours are very helpful. I recommend sitting in his T, since he doesnt repeat questions people ask back to the class
Very easy professor. As long as you read the notes, and go over the homework, you will ACE every test I guarantee it! He has curved every test, and is extremely lenient in terms of grading. The final has the potential to replace BOTH midterms if all else fails. No pun intended.
hes like awesome
Really easy class. Homework is not collected but is highly suggested to do if you want to understand the notes, chapter, and quizzes. They are all really easy to understand. Definately take his class!!
He tries hard to teach to the class, but he isn't a very charismatic teacher. He didn't require clickers or ALEKS homework. If you keep up with the homework you should do well. His grading is very generous and his tests are multiple choice. A majority of quiz questions and test questions come from the homework!
I don't know how he got such high ratings, his teaching style is crap. Writing is very messy/ small, mumbles. Grade distribution at the end of the class- 20 students received D's, 35 received C's, 21 B's, and 8 received A's. Maybe he just cant teach upperdivs.
The class was pretty straight-forward. The quizzes (every week) & midterm are directly (word for word)from homework (not mandatory, but as you can see, you better do them!). Final was super hard though. Even though he said there's no curve, an A- was 88% B- was 67% C- was 44%. I think that's pretty generous.
Lavallo is a nice guy and tries to be very fair and easy. Very un appealing teacher. Quizzes are extremely easy but then he tricks you by giving a hard ass midterm. Overall you should be able to get an A if you study somewhat hard. You can make the final worth 80 percent of the grade. No curve. Good guy, but lazy teacher
Dr. Lavallo is a good intro to the Chemistry series. He makes lectures enjoyable with jokes but he mumbles a lot. Overall, his midterms are challenging but the final has the potential to replace them both if you do better than previous scores. Study and really understand the concepts. Do the homework as they show up on the tests.
Do yourself the favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM. Chem is my lifemajor, and this class was horrible. Notes are messy & don't bother asking questions since his answer is always, "Well, it depends.". Majority of the class ended up failing but I think he ended up adjusted the grade scale so that the majority of the class didn't fails.
First of all, the person who said his final was "cake" probably had his first class, where as you can tell by the comments, seemed like one where you could get an easy A. The final was NOT "cake". It was challenging for me, and I looked over the homework a lot. Don't just study the HW. GO to his lectures and maybe read the book, which I didnt read
His first midterm was extremely easy, his second midterm and final were not. He isn't very good at lecturing, but going to lecture is important. He sometimes mumbles and his uploaded slides are sometimes upside down and hard to read. Discussion sections were important and helped more with my understanding of the material than lecture did.
Easiest chem class you will ever have. Chem only gets harder from here. Believe me. You want this class
He's unbelievably generous with curves. Plus, he gives everyone extra credit just for doing the iEval on time. I literally got an 83% on the midterms, which already put me in A territory. If you do better on the final than on the midterms, he matches the midterm score to the final. I took a lot of chem after this, and he was by far my easiest prof.
Lavallo dor 1A is a good choice. You think the grading scale is amazing (told at the beginning of the quarter) until you take the final and see how hard it is. Nonetheless hes an ok professor. Shouldve curved slightly more
Professor Lavallo, although a nice person is a mediocre professor at best. For an introductory class, he did a terrible job at laying a foundation of chemistry knowledge and enjoyed spending time talking about his research or "teaching" us Ochem and biology. Given the parameters of the class, this is unacceptable. The Curve is a blessing though.
Lavallo is an unorganized professors that expects you to believe that everything on the midterm and final is on his lecture slides, when in reality its on stuff that he didn't even teach us. Do yourself a favor and do not take this professor, he does not care at all about your grade.
Midterm and Final does not accurately illustrate students abilities from what they learned in class throughout the quarter.
Midterm was fine. Average difficulty. Final was twice as hard as anything wed ever done in the class on almost every problem. If you enjoy your entire grade riding on an extremely difficult final this is the professor for you. He doesnt curve but he adjusts grading scales about 8% down(62% is a C-).
Avoid this teacher at all costs. The guy taught us o-chem & unrelated material towards chem1A. Alternatively, he mentioned that his homework and slides would reflect the final, which in fact they did not. Average class percentage on the midterm and final was 60% and 50% respectively all of his sections. Houston we have a problem with this prof.
Extremely disorganized professor. The lectures were lacked direction and he got himself confused sometimes. He taught us O-chem and Bio and had it on both the midterm and the final. Homework isn't graded, but it's so vague that you end up not knowing if you understand the concepts or not until you take the midterm and final.
Final and midterm don't reflect our learning at all
Isnt that bad to be honest ... use the homework to study for exams. If you understand the concepts on the homework you should be in pretty good shape for the midterm and final. Final was WAY harder than the midterm, but the grading scale is pretty good. Taught us a lot of bio and ochem for some reason which was a little annoying.
Lavallo is all about concepts. He literally wants you to memorize the homework word for word. His grading scale is the only reason I got an A in the class. The quizzes very super easy compared to the midterm and final. The bonus quizzes helped with my grade. If you want to pass,KNOW THE HW BY HEART! His handwriting is super messy!
Professor Lavallo was very quick in almost all concepts and we all had a hard time catching up. He focused more on conceptual sides of chemistry and went in-depth on concepts that were usually straight forward (like molecular orbitals). Focuses a lot on ochem which should help later, if it wasn't for the generous curve I would've definitely failed.
Lavallo's teaching strategies are not effective for most students. He spends many slides on Bio and OChem and gives very hard midterms and finals. They do not reflect the homework. Asking questions was also not helpful because he says he "figured we knew that already." The curve is nice at the end but it is because of all the complaints he gets.
He is not great in terms of his teaching skills. He goes of topic a lot and goes into detail too much for things not on the tests. But, he does offer lots of extra credit on quizzes in discussion. He also curves the class a lot. Also, his office hours help.
His lectures are extremely boring and he isn't always the easiest to understand, but he does post the lecture notes which is a plus. The midterm and final had pretty low averages, which is why in order to pass the class you only needed a 47%. If you read over the lecture notes and do the homework, you'll be able to pass.
Professor Lavallo is all over the place with his lectures and course material. It begins off easy, but his tests are very deceiving. He goes very deeply into organic chemistry concepts and not much general chem in my opinion. You never really know what grade you're going to get in the class until the very end & its a gamble. Would not recommend
Teaches ochem instead of gen chem. Boring as hell and tests are super hard if you don't study hard enough. Curves very generously to help everyone not fail.
He is extremely disorganized and does not really teach any general chemistry knowledge. He also lectures at the literal speed of light so its impossible to keep up. The discussion quizzes are very easy and his curves barely make up for the failing class averages. His midterms and final are very tricky and the class usually does very poorly on them.
He was very very accommodating during this pandemic. Attendance isnt mandatory and he records lectures, so its super easy to refer bsck too. If you need a great chem teacher, hes the guy!!!!
Very hard to understand and bad at explaining. Also he teaches ochem in a genchem class
Professor Lavallo is not a good professor when it comes to teaching. His teaching style is not the most suitable for many. Personally, there is just too much about the way he lectures that makes me not take him seriously. And the content presented was confusing. You're better off just reading the book and take notes there. A lot of tests as well.
Professor Lavallo is very understanding and caring since were in a pandemic, but it was hard to learn anything and so easy to fall behind and his lectures were too fast and confusing.
Don't recommend at all. He's so confusing and gives wrong answers. His midterm is even more confusing. Whenever you ask him a question he just says " this will make sense in a few minutes" but it actually doesn't. IF YOU HAVE THE CHOICE DON'T CHOOSE HIM. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
You'd be better off teaching yourself gen chem through yt videos and khan academy. His lectures are all over the place and his hw and midterm keys always have 1 or 2 wrong answers. Very disorganized and confusing. The only good part of his class is the TA I have for discussion which taught more chemistry in 1 hour than his 3 lectures combined.
The grade is only based off of 3 tests: 2 midterms and one final. His lectures are extremely hard to follow and he doesn't teach, he just reads off his slides which aren't informational anyway. He does a lot of O-chem which also feels unnecessary.
The class is graded by only three things: 2 midterms and 1 final. He turns up the heat a lot on the tests in terms of difficulty, and because the tests are so hard, he has to adjust the grading scale/curve a lot. The only upside of his class is that there are weekly quizzes in discussion that are worth bonus points towards the overall grade.
The grade is based on two midterms and a final. Quizzes are for extra credit and hw is optional. His exams are all mcq and they are not easy at all. He changed the grading scale like 3 times and that's the only good thing about his class. The lectures were confusing and you'd be better off watching youtube videos. I got lucky with a good TA.
Didn't teach properly in lectures at all, and the tests are just curveball after curveball. No real prep material for them either. Towards the end, I didn't even attend lecture; MIT OCW, Professor Dave Explains and OC Tutor got me through the final. The TAs are a blessing, I learnt mostly from the weekly discussion without attending the lectures.
Prof. Lavallo has a unique teaching style. He is somewhat disorganized in his lectures, but makes up for it with a clearly defined learning outcomes. If you are brand new to chemistry he might not be the best option, however if you did well in high school chem or took a pre-chem type class, I would recommend him. Very generous grade curve.
This professor is EXTREMELY disorganized when it comes to lectures. He has a very condescending and pretentious attitude when it comes to answering questions from students. His exams are moderately hard but the answers he has on the key are WRONG. He does not care about teaching and it reflects on the grades of his students.
gl to anyone who has him as a prof and survives. mans does not teach whatsoever, is disorganized as heck, and lowkey rude. you're better off sticking to the textbook, youtube vids, and TA's.
He interrupts people mid-sentence when they ask questions, he literally doesn't seem to care about anything, and the midterm he gave us resulted in B- though D. The one person in our class who got an A allegedly guessed everything. Literally sheer guesswork.
Doesn't care what you do in class but gives a huge curve during both midterms and final XD
Lavallo clearly couldn't care less about teaching. He is incredibly rude and pretentious to students, and his lectures are disorganized and confusing. We were online this quarter and he barely had anything prepared to teach other than chicken scratch in a Notes app. The TAs are lifesavers and work harder than the actual professor.
The only grades in the class come from 2 midterms and a final. His lectures are a disorganized mess. No homework to turn in but it is still available for practice, however there are frequently mistakes in both the homework and answer keys. God forbid you ask him a question during lecture, he will get annoyed and tell you to read his notes later.
Don't take his class you will lose at least 20 years of your lifespan. If you ever wanna ask a question might as well ask the beaker in the class it would tell you more. Going to his class makes me want to drop out of college.
Lavallo is... well, he's clearly a skilled and passionate chemist who knows his stuff. But his lectures get messy, and sometimes it feels as though he's lost touch with what it's like to go into GenChem as a dumb freshman. He answers questions asked during lecture quite thoroughly. Subtly funny. Overhated, imo.
This class was hard not because of the material but because Lavallo did a terrible job at teaching it. Very confused and unorganized lectures, no clear guidance throughout the quarter and is unable to receive criticism from students, even when constructive. The average pre-curve for the class is most likely below 50% which says a lot about him.
Worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are dense and oftentimes when you ask him questions he won't answer them and tell you to either look at his notes or to watch the lecture recordings. As much as he claims he doesn't mean to be condescending when students ask him questions, his general approach and tone say otherwise.
Some people just aren't made to teach and he's one of them.
i never write about professors but i made an account to describe the pain we went through for chem 1a. dude is so rude, says stuff like “it’s simple” and if you have a question, he’ll just tell you to rewatch the lecture after class. makes you feel bad for asking questions. don’t take this class. we warned you.
I'm not one to complain about professors, if I struggle in a subject I would improve. This class is practically impossible to pass. Only graded by 2 midterms and a final. The exams include material he had never covered & claims to never trick us yet does. Covers ORGANIC chem in GENERAL chem course. SUPER condescending towards students.
Pretty confusing in lectures and goes too fast. Graded on only two midterms and a final. Extra credit quizzes. Lazy as well, doesn’t fix keys or post keys rlly that soon. I took chem in high school, yet still did sorta bad on the midterms.
Be prepared to do a lot of rewatching/ outside research if you haven't taken chem. Most lectures become very messy as he often circles and underlines the entire slide. Extra credit quizzes are given out every week in discussion but are the only things that can help boost your grade up as all other grades are from the midterms (2) and final.
Prof. Lavallo was THE worst professor I have ever had. No one else even compares to him. Extremely unorganized, condescending, and doesn't care about teaching at all. His lectures are terrible, handwriting is chicken scratch, and exams are based purely on the concepts only important to him. The entire grade is two midterms and a final.
Professor Lavallo is and will be the worst professor I'll ever have. He's very unorganized when demonstrating problems. Never answers students' questions during lectures. It is impossible to reach him outside of class. The midterms and final are completely different from the material he teaches. Just overall AWFUL.
Professor Lavallo is and will be the worst professor I'll ever have. He's very unorganized when demonstrating problems. Never answers students' questions during lectures. It is impossible to reach him outside of class. The midterms and final are completely different from the material he teaches. Just overall AWFUL. 150% wouldn't recommend him
Man, I feel so bad for the people who have to take his class. I studied for weeks just to get the bare minimum. The class isn’t curved as much as people make it out to be. The material is so hard too. Eichler’s kids aren’t even learning material of the same level. What did I do in life to get this unlucky? The class is so disorganised.
This professor is the worst. His class is so disorganized which makes it hard for students to follow. His notes are chicken scratch. His class is graded only on 3 things and the final is worth 60% of your grade. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Everyone would have to retake chemistry due to his poor teaching if it wasn't for his generous curve.
The worst professor I have had at UCR. Extremely lazy, rude and unpassionate.
A nightmare to have, had everyone stressed because we knew he’d throw questions out of nowhere for the final, lectures are unclear and disorganized, you need a good TA to save you. 2 MT, 1Final and EC quizzes decide your grade. Its basically Ochem with a dash of general chemistry on the exams even with a generous curve you’ll be praying to pass
Included material in midterms & final exams as expected and all that was covered in class. Cares for students and has overwhelmingly amount of extra credit. Open to any questions from students.
Does bare minimum for teaching. Nothing but reading slides
bro just reads off slides from his bed and hardly teaches. I depend on my TA to teach me. Extra credit quizzes are in discussions and midterms are multiple-choice, online, and u can do it in a group. final is in person though. would not recommend
this guy's a joke...he teaches from the comfort of his bed. Lectures don't reflect what's on the midterms, hw, or discussions. when you ask him a question, he's literally too lazy to compute it. I am very experienced in chem, yet he manages to confuse me. the way he words questions is odd n noncomprehendable. pray for his students n TAs.
Overall I had an average experience. His lectures were average and he could be unclear at times. The midterms were average in difficulty, but they were online. The final was a little difficult and in-person, but there was a generous curve.
The lectures were not hard to follow, but mostly because they were just slides ripped out of the textbook that you do not need. Be prepared to learn on your own. Grading is based on 2 online midterms, an inperson final, and up to 10% ec in your discussion. Do well on your first 2 midterms and you will not fail, the curve, in the end was crazy good
Lectures are confusing, discussion and going to TA office hours are the only way you can pass this class
Most of your grade is based on the midterm and finals and the discussions are lifesavers as the lectures are hard to follow. Also grade curve and extra credit WILL save your grade so go to discussions.
Lectures are a joke, he would literally be in BED recording sometimes. I stopped going after the first 2 weeks because they didn't help me at all. Discussions were very helpful. I learned more in discussion than lecture. There are short quizzes every disc. for EC. TA goes over everything that's on the quiz beforehand. 2 midterms 1 final EC quiz
This is my first time taking a chem class and I do not recommend you take this professor's class. He teaches online which is poorly discussed and understood by the class. Since he is a tenured professor he doesn't care if his students come to class or even do the homework. The class average was 52%. don't recommend it!!!
I had the online section for Lavallo for Chem 001A. He was honestly a terrible lecturer and doesn't know how to teach, but his curves for the midterms and finals are crazy. I got a 60% on my final but ended with an A- in the class.
Lavallo does not care about this class. Half of the lectures were taught with him eating in bed. Everything is very confusing and he is very rude and hostile towards student correcting him or asking questions. He rubs his tenured status in everyones face any chance he gets and boasts that he cant be fired. Threatened to fail the whole class. Awful.
I didnt go to this guys class at all and I regret it. GO TO CLASS OR YOU WONT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING. that's it, as long as you go to class and somewhat understand that then you will be fine. midterms were collaborative so take that as you will.
Literally the worst class I've ever taken. I was only saved by the curve at the end of the year and the EC from discussion. Lavallo does not really teach and gets annoyed when you don't understand even after he has repeated it multiple times. He also taught new material during the OPTIONAL review session and still left the material on the test.
this class was a breeze. not sure why a lot of people hate on him. it may be bc many of his students are first years and are not used to the exam-heavy grade, but he gives so many extra credit points in discussion and exams/midterms match exactly the practice exams and quizzes. I had him online and he recorded lectures & did not require atttendance
Looking back, this class was pretty difficult for a 1st year requirement. You need to adapt immediately to the content and learn on your own. Some extra studying is needed. All MC on exams. The key for this class is memory and conceptualization. It may be difficult as most people are taking this with BIOL005A. Professor mean too. Stay organized.
DID NOT GO TO LECTURES AND GOT AN -A LETS GOOOOOO
Chem was my top subject and I barely passed. Lectures are bad, notes are terrible, tests dont reflect learning or hw like he claims. Extra credit from discussion, but if u don't know the material...doesn't really help. I had a 59% ended with a C, so yeah good curve but not good enough to get you an A. Drop the class and get a diff prof.
He is not the profesor when it comes to lecturing or ask questions, but is probably the best professor when it comes to getting an A. The curve and the extra credit discussion quizzes save your grade. The final is everything taught in the midterms. He always post the previous quarters midterms with answer. Going to discussion section is a must!!
If you have to take this class, study the homework problems, attend lectures to know what to focus on, and attend discussions for extra credit to get that solid A. I wish I would have done that early on in the semester. I had a hard time understanding the content in the lectures, so I heavily relied on Khan Academy and YouTube videos.
From what I remember, all we had were two midterms and a Final. That was your grade. I stress doing the optional homework to check comprehension. Specifically, read the book on the topic or watch a video on it, do the hw. Simple as that. There also may be a huge curve depending on the performance of the class, but do the hw religiously.
Not saying he's an amazing professor but he gives so much extra credit that it's kind of your own fault if you do not get an A. Midterms are also online and open note.
Although I am not doing great in his class (do to my own fault), he's a great professor overall. He convinced me chemistry wasn't just a made up concentration, but rather one that is complex. Midterms are open everything, but I'd still recommend studying since the Final isn't (open notes open everything).
If you didn't get an A, that is your own fault. It is impossible to get a low grade. Flat A is an 86%. Up to 20% extra cred from taking quizzes. Basically if you got a 90% or above on the ONLINE midterms that you can literally take with you friends + openbook, you only need a 35% on the final to get an A if you did your extra cred in discussion.
It is almost impossible to fail this course and if you do it's pretty much your fault… 20% extra credit or the average of your weekly discussion quizzes added on top of the already curved grading scale of 86% for an A. Midterms online and open note final is not.
Lavallo helps you get a good grade because of his discussion quizzes being an additional 10-20% towards your grade. However, his way of teaching chemistry is so far off AP Chem and only focuses on molecular orbital theory for 5 weeks. It is hard to learn if you expect the typical chemistry from this class, but the TA Luke Jackson is wonderful.
Lavallo was chill because he gave so much extra credit it was practically impossible not to get an A. The lecture is online so if you want to understand the content do what I did: take notes and ASK QUESTIONS during the lecture, so you won't get distracted by brainrot. STUDY by doing the HOMEWORK and PRACTICE MIDTERMS. CLASS WAS EZ.
he sweats like a m
The structure of his course is nice and generous so getting an A is not a problem and is achievable for most students. With that being said, the TAs are better at teaching chemistry than he is but they cannot cover every topic like he does. The quality of his ability to teach is shocking which makes this course difficult, not the content itself.
Chem with Lavallo can be tough, but with the right strategy, you can nail it. Focus on the homework, attend discussions for extra credit, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI to supplement your studies. The curve and his grading system make it doable, just don't slack off.
You're better off teaching yourself. TAs are absolutely amazing. 2 midterms online and a in-person final. Study and understand his past midterms and you'll be fine. Quizzes are extra credit so take advantage of them for discussion. Curve goes crazy to compensate for his bad teaching. Take him if you need gen ed and don't care to learn.
Lectures were hard to follow for me. But with some extra effort, it isnt that much work. Def. make sure you take all the disc quizzes. The TA I had discussed topics in the quiz right before, so I did well on most of them. Final is essentially the two midterms plus the last 2 chapters. Qs are not exactly same but if u understand the topics ur good.
Horrible professor
Avoid if you can. During my quarter, he switched to a new format where lectures were pre-recorded, so there were no live classes at all. His pre-recorded lectures are terrible, he does not explain anything, and just reads off slides. Go to the TAs' office hours instead if you need help, they're much better at their job than the professor.
You WILL NOT learn anything from this guy and your ta WILL NOT speak English. Most likely going to get an A because he's just accepted he's a terrible professor and made the grading scale super easy, and that's the only good part.
You won't learn anything from this professor. The TA's teach better.
I hate him. This professor and this class in general feel like a sick joke to get me to switch my major. The class was initially advertised as Zoom lectures, but this was quickly changed to office hours. The video lectures consist of him reading directly from the slides. There are two midterms and a final. He is bribing us to fill out his I-eval.
Vincent Lavallo is extremely disorganized, and lacks care toward his students. Any time I tried to ask questions, he simply just brushed me off and go to a TA.His lectures are subpar at best, and he's not diligent with fully explaining things. His flipped classroom model requires an extreme amount of discipline to keep up with the material.
Please avoid taking this professor. Unnecessarily rude and structures the course for two online midterms and one final. Graded by very few things and it's a make or break. Wait for Eichler or any other professor!!!!!
Boring, annoying, and childish. His lectures are hard to understand and for this quarter, he didn't actually teach on zoom and posted old lecture recordings. TAs are way better at teaching.
literally never went to lecture after week 1 and relied on TA teaching to learn. midterms are open book, easy to pass but the final, not so much. very generous curve which is how i got a B. also doesn't know how to get rid of zoom bombers.
Very generous curve and extra credit, but that's literally the only good thing about this course. He posted lectures from quarters ago (that weren't even helpful)--you're better off just learning chemistry by yourself with Youtube videos.
so basically he tried a new thing this year called a hybrid classroom where he posts every single lecture on canvas from like day 1 of class and these videos are all poopy water. He swapped roles with his TAs in discussion you get lectured, and get extra quizzes. in the class you get graded on 2 midterms and the final. Watch crash course instead.
Actually avoid. he doesnt teach, avoidant, and more than 50% of the class were supposed to fail but ended up getting like Cs because of how insane the curve is.
Don't take Lavallo unless you want to learn chemistry by yourself. There is a curve applied but that's due to his bad teaching. His exams don't reflect what he's teaching.
