Vinnie's the best he's the one who finally got me thru elem algebra! It's too bad he doesn't teach more math classes! He's also cute in a purely geeky sort of way.
i took vincent class for summer B, which i dont reccommend because out of about 14 people in the class not very many people passed. teacher is a bit confusing but is to ge the class to understand to the best of his ability. i suggest if your going totake him, make it a full semester, so its not so fast
Hi is a very helpful teacher. He is inspiring and funny. I learned Calculus 1 very well. Great teacher...
I had him as a sub for one day in my mgf1106 class. I learned more in one day with him than with my actual professor. I really hope I can take him for a future math class. He explains everything so well for people who don't get math very well. He's great!
One of my favorite professors so far. I will take him again in other courses if I can. He is really easy to understand.
Great professor explains clearly and very helpful
Professor Locascio is very helpful and eager to help u learn this math, very detailed in his approach in teaching, this will be a benefit in the long run.
Nice guy, not the best at teaching. I know hes new but my other classmates and I found his exams to be too difficult. We have been learning more during studying than in the actual class. After the first exam there were quite a few drops with nearly half the class not passing. During his office hours he will multitask between his computer and you.
worst professor ever, stay away from his class!! he will make you feel miserable if you ask for help. i compared his test with other professors and they are stupidly difficult in comparison, if you go to his office hours he will just make you feel bad, and if you claim something about the test he will just insult
He is a great math teacher. He is helpful, fair, funny and explains the material clearly. His exams are a little long but not that hard if you study well. I will take his class again ... .
Pretty tough tests. He likes to test on specific things he stressed in class, so general knowledge of material is somehow not enough to pass his class. He likes testing on theory too, so knowing application isn't enough either. Pretty much his way or the highway, but if you pick up on that sooner rather than later, then you should be fine.
The guy is a new teacher and he shouldn't be teaching such high level math. His lectures are full of copying from the textbook and he'll never answer your questions, just "go home and work it out." His exams are extremely tough and he grades like crazy. His final was almost impossible and only two people passed it before the curve. DONT TAKE HIM
I learned a lot in this calss. Professor Locascio is a good teacher, he cares about students, and it is important to him you learn the material well. If you work regularly through the semester you'll be fine.
Great teacher, and passionate in teaching. I'll take him again.
LOCASCIO is just awesome. By far, the best professor ever. Hilarious, makes calculus and math in general funnier than ever. He is a great guy. Do the homework, read the book, come to class and study your notes. That's it.
Locascio takes a little while to warm up to, but after a couple weeks in his trig class he became my favorite professor by far. He's extremely passionate about what he teaches, and his sense of humor is great. I laughed during each class. The homework and textbook are a direct reflection of the tests. Study and ask questions and it's An easy class.
He is passionate about what he does. He is a nice teacher overall, would recommend only if you study enough. He is a bit inconsistent with attendance.
He is the worst. he makes up his own tests and no calculator what so ever. he loves fractions and loves to trick you. stay clear of this man unless you already have a solid calculus background.
Locascio is amazing. Plain and simple. His lectures are hilarious and he's so passionate about his area of work. He's extremely helpful and creative in his techniques. He doesn't promote calculators because he tries to teach students the logic behind math. He teaches why instead of how. I would recommend his trig or calc classes to ANYONE.
Like some other comments say, his quirks may take a couple weeks to get used to. But over all the man is definitely passionate about math. He sincerely wants his students to do well. He won't be the one to initiate extra help, but if you ask for it he is more than happy to help you. A little scatterbrained but overall a great professor.
Do not take him. If you ask a question he gets mad and offended that you don't understand his lectures. He will tell you to do the problems and then ask later. Loves to call students out if they aren't doing well. Goes off on a bunch of tangents and is difficult to understand. At least trig is easy, but if you don't get it you won't do well.
He goes deeper into theory than any other math professor I've had, which helps with true understanding. He definitely cleared up some fundamental issues that I had with math, which most professors don't take the time to do. Very thorough; definitely a passionate professor who cares about you and the subject. My favorite for the semester.
My favorite! Hes honestly one of my favorite teachers.. my first time taking calc (and mind you, i do like math a lot) but he has made me love calc! His lectures are very helpful and he really knows his stuff. He's also funny in his own quirky way, and i bust out laughing sometimes. Tests are hard but he teaches you everything you need to know.
I had the great pleasure of taking MAC2312 class in the fall of 2014 with professor Locascio. I am taking Physics-1 this semester which involves calculus, so I realized the importance a good Professor like him. Professor Locascio made a tremendous impact on my learning skill and I owe that to him and so he is of a great value to Santa Fe college.
Mr. L was shamelessly persistence with his questions during class. But honestly, learning to say, "I don't know" was the hardest, but best thing he taught me. He just took it from there. I feel prepared for the next level of math, even though I wasn't for this one.
I had Professor Locascio for Calculus One and he is a great professor. He will go over any questions you might have and encourages you to attend his office hours if you need help with anything. He is very helpful when it come to homework but he expects you to try it first before asking any questions.
terrible at teaching. do not ask him any questions he will make you figure it out on your own time. told me to meet him at office hours and was 45 mins late. very difficult tests and you dont learn much in class
Does tons of examples on the board. He is a good teacher but tends to go on and on. Ask questions. Tests can be tough if you don't know the material.
Professor Locascio is a really good professor and was extremely helpful whenever I had any questions, especially during his office hours. Can be a bit disorganized but he truly is a passionate teacher and wants you to succeed.
Im an overall quiet person and he really did NOT like that. If you don't participate its like he hates you... He's not afraid to call you out, tests are hard, and although homework isnt worth much, if you dont do it you wont understand anything. Be prepared to teach yourself and if you ask for help he gets annoyed.
Awful professor, doesn't teach very well, nor explain anything in depth. His motto was "work smarter, not harder," however if you don't teach the material well, how am I supposed to work smarter? He seemed irritated when asked for help and doesn't like to repeat things more than once (so if you don't understand it the first time, tough luck!).
You get the sense he loves teaching math. While patience is required with all maths, having that mainframe can be helpful when taking his class. He has a sense of humor and doesn't take things too seriously. Go to class, ask questions, do the work, and you should do fine! He pours his heart into his lectures and its noticeable and appreciated.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. This guy yelled at another student for trying to help someone who couldn't understand the problem. He over explains everything as much as possible and mixed up every date possible. He told the class our final was on a different day then what was posted on mathlab. This screwed me since I worked that day.
Most amazing teacher. Always ready help.
Fun teacher to take and does not make fun of you for asking remedial math questions in this high level math class. I'm not great in math, but this guy helped me through this class. I actually feel like I know trig now beyond just memorizing formulas. Do the work you will pass. Bad reviews Butt hurt kids. He makes you think outside the box. JGBW
If you ask questions he's not just going to give you the answer he makes you work for it. Some students were put off by it but it never bothered me. He was very easy to meet with outside of class and was extremely helpful in those 1 on 1 meetings.
If you've taken a math college readiness class this class will be easy. Locascio isn't a good teacher. He's confusing and rude. He will get up in your face and blame his shortcomings on you. He's often late to class and when you ask for help all he asks is for you notes and doesn't help you. I highly don't recommend.
Absolutely the worst math professor I've taken at Santa Fe. He yelled at out class for asking questions, test are confusing along with his lectures. He also expect you to teach yourself. He has no business being a math professor.. don't waste your time or money.
If I could go back and choose a different professor, I would. Beware, save yourself, I wouldn't recommend him on any level.
Just DON'T take this class with this professor. He DOESN'T explain very well. point-out people.
Professor Locascio truly DOES care about all his students, including ones who struggle with math. However, he is very unorganized and scatterbrained during his lectures. But if you show that you care, and go to his office hours for help, he will work with you and help you understand. He teaches better one on one.
LoCascio is one of the most caring and understanding teachers I have ever had. He truly wants to see you succeed. He's very passionate about the subject matter and explain the material really well. I will take his class again!
The homework and tests are all departmental, so I'll focus on his in class qualities for this class. He gives clear lectures, but he is very awkward and gets on to you for any talking, even if its about the lecture to another classmate. He is helpful patient and makes sure you understand each concept if you have a question.
I do think professor LoCascio cares about his students but his teaching style is scattered and disorganized. He used two separate chalkboards and alternated randomly between the two. During office hours he gets frustrated if you answer practice problems wrong even though you wouldnt be there if you understood them. Gives a 5% bonus for attendance.
Great, nice guy who actually cares if you show up or are struggling, as long as you do as well.
I SUCK AT MATH. To be exact I suck at Geometry and choosing between taking a Geometry based class vs retaking College Algebra 3x I would choose the lather. I went to Trigonometry not knowing what I was getting myself into, but after going to almost all of Locasio's office hours I can honestly say I'm glad to have taken his class! You can pass Trig
He has good lectures and you dont need to e
He taught by writing on the board and explained everything in a way I understood. He does lots of examples in class. There is a bit of HW, but nothing crazy or to hard. My friend did not find his teaching very effective, but I think that was our different learning styles. He did get a little animated in class, very passionate about trig.
Terrible teaching style, you're better off teaching yourself at home.
Very easy class, yet very overcomlicated. The way he teaches manages to make the simplest concepts hurt your head from the way he explains. I highly regret taking this course with him ,and next time I am avoiding this professor at all costs.
There are those who teach, and then there are Locascio's. His teaching style is conducive to the way math should be taught. It is taking one concept and building off of it which in some instances may be disorganized but no one does it better than this guy.
Absolute Boss at teaching Trig. Took College Algebra 5 years prior so I was rusty. Very good at teaching concepts and why we are doing things. Passionate and energetic. Will give you all the time you need in office hours. Pet Peeves - talking in class so just shut up and learn Stickler with Trig proof format. Do them exactly as he does and good2g
Locascio's an okay professor, he gives a quiz or test every Wednesday so I'd show up on quiz days. I'm pretty good at math though so my opinion may be a little biased. There's a lot of online homework but it's all fairly easy and its all given at once so if you can, try and do as much of it ahead of time so you don't have to worry about it later.
Would have done much better with a different professor. Save yourself.
He is very unorganized. The tests make up 80% of your grade. Test 1 and 2 are 20% each and the final is worth 40%. He does answer questions but only if he likes you. Some students he simply tells to read the packet. He loves math, but tends to teach things for an hour and then backtrack by saying "but you don't need to know that"
Not helpful at all. This class should be an easy A yet I struggled and fought for my grade. He is unclear and unorganized in every sense of the word. He is passionate about math but makes you feel awful if you arent. Made me despise math. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Terrible with his lectures, so unorganized it is almost impossible to know what you are learning at the time. He goes off topic and tells stories that do not relate to what we are learning. He makes you feel incompetent when asking questions. DO NOT TAKE CALCULUS 1 WITH HIM!
Professor Locascio is the best teacher I've had. He cares about you understanding and the topics are extremely easy to understand. The tests are v easy if you study for them. He usually gave us a practice exam with the answers that was basically the same as the test. He's a funny guy and genuinely seems to enjoy teaching. Also no homework ever!
Mr Locascio is a right fine fella. Enjoyed his class and when i showed struggle with topics he was readily available to help. Respects students who shows they're dedicated.
Really cool guy! Does not like to work on weekends though so you might not be able to reach him then. He prepares you pretty well and I feel like he cares for his students well being. He wants to make sure you understand and is very patient. The whole course is through WebAssign. No late work or extra credit. There are 3 exams and a final!
Took his class in Fall 2020. A very sweet and chill guy who really cares for his students and will above and beyond in explanations of any topic asked. All the homework, tests, and quizzes are on WebAssign. It is hard to contact him on weekends. The exams are super easy. EC on hw if done ahead of time.
I loved prof locascio, i took his class for trig and calc 1! He really wants all of his students to do well! He is very accessible but always wants his weekends off. As long as you pay attention and participate you will be fine. There was 3 tests and 1 final. Around 2 homework assignments every week but they are not super long.
I really enjoyed this class! As someone who is afraid of math, I never thought I would be good at mental math. Professor LoCascio taught us the Arthur Benjamin methods of mental math. It's really useful and really entertaining. If you need help, he is very understanding and will meet with you to work out any problems you have. He is awesome!
I loved taking Professor Locascio online. He is great at teaching Calculus and keeping your attention during class. Show up to class and participate to make it more enjoyable. Homework is on webassign and gives you most of the practice you need for exams. He loves to give students extra help if they have questions.
If you don't try your hardest to pay attention and decode what he says as well as treat course materials like holy items, you're gonna struggle. His explanations are unclear and it's almost like he's trying to teach himself and his class at the same time. Did not handle covid well AT ALL. Very boring and incredibly unorganized.
At first I was a little hesitant to take Prof. Locasio based on the reviews left here, and I always check reviews because I've had very bad experiences when I don't check the rating of a professor. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with Prof. Locasio. He is kind and truly wants you to do your best. I would definitely recommend him!
Prof. Locascio was great!!! He teaches you how to learn the 100 digits of pie and many other things. Take this class!!!
Professor Locascio was an extremely disorganized professor. Our first exam wasn't until 10 weeks into the semester, and then he had to squeeze in the last two tests during the last two classes of the semester. He doesn't have a lot of grades, so the tests are pretty much your only grades. Not a difficult class, but definitely not one to take.
Very enthusiastic about teaching almost to a fault. Often goes on long tangents in response to questions, but on the upside, he makes sure you understand the material. Almost no homework, so very test-heavy, but he will drill concepts into your head as long as you pay attention. Not the best at time management, but he will work with you.
Anyone who complains about Mr.Locascio never took the time to make an effort. Is he a bit all over the place? yeah, but thats because he REALLY enjoys the concept and is doing his best to help you love it also. For the first time in my life I finally understood and enjoyed taking a math class. If you have problems just talk to him, you'll be ok.
Professor Locascio is a very nice guy, and will always be there to help you if you need it. I do recommend taking this class but he does tend to go off on random tangents for a lot of class. But overall he is a good professor
This has been the best math course I've ever taken in my education career! 100% recommend this course with Professor Vincent Locascio! A great professor that actually made me enjoy taking math! Very helpful, flexible, and understanding throughout the course!
weird that you can be paid to just post 20 year old videos and just grade. I imagine this class would be super easy for some. there is absolutely NO pen or paper, it's all in your head which gets quite difficult towards the end if you find math as challenging as i do. professor is practically non-existent. have to copy 30-minute lectures verbatim.
Mr. Locascio was VERY helpful and really wants to help his students succeed. I was intimidated by the mental math at first, but I am so glad I stuck with it as I learned many helpful methods that I can use in my every day life. It can be difficult at first, but PRACTICE is the key. The more you practice the more fun you have and it gets easier!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR AND CLASS IF YOU VALUE YOU CORE MATH SKILLS AND MENTAL SANITY!!! Old lecture videos, little help in understanding material. This class caused me to second guess my basic math I have been doing for years in my head. It is to the point now that I have to use a calculator otherwise I screw it up.
I think that Professor Locascio is a solid instructor, but I feel that zoom limits that. You can tell that he cares and is trying his best. Zoom makes the class much worse because of the less personal connection to the professor. There is no "homework" but a lot of suggested work. The grades come almost completely from the tests and final.
Locascio's method of teaching is unorthodox at best and simply does not work at all, from the first week he decided that we would have no actual lectures in a lecture based course. The syllabus was not accurate at all and the only actual assignments we were given were 3 tests and the final exam, which he made us take test 3 combined with.
I really liked the communication. He always made you feel comfortable asking questions and gave good feedback. A large part of the content that helped me was the course videos. Mr. Locascio was consistent on giving feedback for certain questions on I got wrong, and he also gave positive encouragement for getting questions right often.
Yo this man is mad funny, like this dude make you stand up and do work from like zero. No lectures no nun. He chill asf tho but like deadass im not taking him again. His ways of teaching are unorthodox but the later you get into the year the more youll get use to it. Take him if you want to laugh while learning some math.
Don't take this professor for Calc 1 you will regret it. Attendance is mandatory (no excused absences), super unprofessional, and rude to students. Everyone in my class is failing and the professor couldn't care less. Save yourself and dont register for this class
Instructor Locascio is one of the best math professors I've ever had. He understands that math isn't for everyone, and while he's often disorganized and all over the place, you can tell he really cares about our learning. He's super funny and takes the time to help you if you ask him questions. ILY INSTRUCTOR LOCASCIO
Professor Locascio is the worst math teacher I've ever had. His teaching strategy does not work at all. He doesn't lecture and expects us to teach ourselves. He leaves the classroom for 30 minutes at a time. At least half of the class has a D or below. He's mean, condescending, and confrontational and will yell at students for asking questions.
PLEASE WHATEVER YOU DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is horrible in every way shape and form. he will never answer a single message, zoom, call, or email. good luck passing this class. words cannot describe the RAGE!!! I have for this awful professor. He expects everyone to do Algebra 2 hw and the assignment all in their head with out a pen/paper no joke
All that I have to say about this class is Good luck and do not take any other class. I repeat DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. You have been warned. Do not do it
If you care about your GPA/MH/learning do not take. No notes, had to stand for entire class and lab. extremely unorganized/hard to follow. Skips steps/ENTIRE UNITS. Unprofessional, condescending and inappropriate. Outs grades to humiliate students. Was so bad the math board offered 30% grade increase or to erase of record. Calc 2 is impossible now!
Instructor Locascio MY KINNGGG!! Please please take this professor for MGF1107 if you have the chance. He is always willing to help out a student who is struggling and is very understanding. He extended our midterm to be due at the end of the semester. This class is honestly easy as long as you actually put in effort. He is also super funny.
I have been a straight-A student my entire life up until this class. I am speaking from very personal experience here. He copies lectures and uses them as his. Another person is "teaching" the course and professor Vincent Lacosio is not teaching at all he grades your work. Have fun memorizing the course cause you can't write during the exam. GG's
Overly passionate in a bad way. Very stubborn and unwilling to listen. Most people only passed because he put huge curves on the last two tests to push people along.
The class lectures was the regurgitation of Arthur Benjamin and mental math way of thinking. The sense of frustration associated with this class was palpable, disappointing, did not produce any valuable or meaningful outcome, leading to a waste of money and time.
Mr. Locascio is awesome. If you put energy into the class and actively try and participate you will learn and have fun!! Anyone can be successful in his building-thinking classroom. I had him for survey of calculus and not only received and A, but actually was able to learn and understand the concepts at hand. Thank you Mr. Locascio!
Mr. Locascio is honestly a very great professor. I took his survey of calc, and I excelled in his class better than any other. Instead of "lectures", he does a building thinking classroom teaching style. Everyone is always participating or in groups, and it allowed me to learn the material much easier than I expected. I highly recommend his class!
Good professor overall. No homework but class group work on board during the class. Also he prints the class work and guides needed so no need to spend money on books.
He is a nice professor. He didn't give us homework, so we had to study ourselves. There were 3 exams and a final exam. He provides us with past papers, and most of the questions are the same as past papers, so if you study them, you can get a high score. Some students struggled because he would start the group work without any particular lecture.
Solid teacher. 80% of days are going to be in groups by whiteboards doing practice problems and sitting around. Very light workload, no required homework. Tests are pretty important. Biggest downside is that he doesn't tell you if you got the right answer for the practice problems so there is this lack of affirmation.
Real nice guy although he can get a little hyper/excited sometimes. For our class he assigned literally no HW and made us work in groups at the whiteboard almost all class. If you participate, though, he will help you and there is literally no reason you shouldn't pass his class. Also the grading scale was pretty well in our favor
If you participate and listen to how he is trying to help you, you will succeed immensely.
Professor Locascio uses a “building thinking classroom”. He never lectures, but if he tried, they turned out to be very unorganized. He places students in groups at the whiteboards and gives them questions/problems to solve. He wants students to do a lot of work by themselves to learn the material for class, and he doesn't display your grade.
His teaching style is interesting, he uses a system called "building thinking classrooms." The class is quite easy if you participate and work a lot outside of class. I feel it definitely isn't a teaching style for most, you'll love his class if you are good at problem solving and able to learn on your own.
His teaching style is different but effective. Its a great opportunity to meet new people and form connections outside the classroom. I would suggest forming study groups and going that extra mile is what he appreciates. Overall I can saw I am a better critical thinker and can work different personalities, which is a great skill in the real-world.
Uses a different teaching style than you'll be used to but trust the process because it works. Its more of an applied learning environment rather than just a sit down lecture and notes class, he teaches you concepts and then you work out problems up on the board in groups. Uses Khan Academy so no buying textbooks or using Cengage.
Professor Locascio is a great guy with a good understanding of math. I think his teaching style works for some, but not all. Locascio's typical day consists of splitting people into groups of 2-4. He will pull up khan academy and have you work on problems together. He is great at office hours, but does tend to rant on, so ask direct questions.
Professor Locascio is incredibly passionate about mathematics, and it clearly shows through his class. Though there are no lectures, I do not doubt that if you genuinely engage with the material put in front of you, you'll do great in the class. I've never understood material more so than I do now, and I would say the same would be true for anyone.
Professor Locascio is clearly passionate about teaching and developing understanding in his students. The "building thinking classroom" method used is great for those that struggle with paying attention through lectures and gets everyone engaged, I definitely benefited from it. As long as you put effort in, your grade will reflect that.
Professor Locascio challenges his students to do well. It's obvious that he is genuinely invested in the success of his class. He doesn't only teach you the course material, he teaches a new way of learning that can be applied to any subject. Probably one of the most unique, and helpful professors I've taken.
Used khan academy instead of Cengage, which is so much better you would even say that khan academy is infinitely better than cengage. Also if you say the phrase “khan academy is infinitely better than cengage” he will instantly put you on his good side and remember it for the rest of the semester. Can you guess who wrote this? Locascio.
Professor Locascio has an engaging teaching style, and I found it to be superior to the standard lecture format. His grading will benefit those who attend class and participate; if you are struggling, he will take the time to help you. He primarily uses Khan Academy, which is objectively better than Cengage and is free. 9/10 Professor.
Personally didn't like this guy. He is extremely disorganized, says he is teaching differently but is honestly just running around the classrooms to different boards with no plan. Goes on tangent after tangent and cant keep focused on anything. He hasn't helped me to learn anything, and after two tests and a quiz, still no grades in canvas.
Terrible professor. Save yourself and do NOT take any of his classes!! His "lectures" are unorganized and confusing. The "course material" is khan academy. This class was a waste of money and time. Could have learned more just sitting at home. He is condescending and rude. Don't even try his office hours. Beware of reviews he wrote himself!
Unorganized, condescending and a useless teacher. No grades published and lack of communication. Lost our exams and got in a shouting match with the department chair IN CLASS!! Weeks behind in course content. Do not take this professor, you are better off teaching yourself without this failure of a professor.
not what i expected when i signed up for this class. professor's lectures are very sporadic, which makes them confusing. you end up having to teach yourself at home. he is also very condescending and likes to single out students and call them out in front of classmates. he never puts in grades. also beware he writes his own 5 star reviews.
As long as you're okay with teaching yourself material through khan academy you'll do fine. He doesn't believe in homework or putting in grades (until the last second). He'll also ask for feedback but is not willing to accept it. Test come straight from khan academy so as long as you have time to study that you should be good.
This class is good if hands-on group activities are how you best learn. "Lectures" were just us in small groups doing Khan Academy assignments. We only had one quiz and 3 exams for each 3-unit section( about 25 questions), and one final exam that was really easy. He takes so long to grade, though. He also doesn't mark what answers you get wrong tho
Didn't teach at all, relied on Khan Academy to teach. If you miss class, good luck finding out what you missed. Professor shows attitude if a student gets question wrong yet does not bother to tell the student how to get it right. On tests, he does not mark which question was wrong and only writes the total grade. No clear schedule for the semester.
For a guy who really wants to push a non-traditional classroom style he does not take any effort to present it in an organized or even semi-organized manner. This class felt like an ADHD attack. Khan Academy is literally every assignment and test. The professor creates nothing, you could get everything here for free online.
Class's format was extremely unorganized and heavily reliant on Khan Academy (which is good as a study tool but not as a primary learning source).
