Compared to other stats teachers I would recommend this professor, but not because of his teaching quality but of his lenience in grading. Curves every test by at least 15 points, including your exam. Doesn't provide any studying materials, and you only have two tests, and homework.Bad at explaining concepts in class, you will be confused 24/7.
I didn't think he was that bad, and I suck at math. Yes, his 1st test had too many word problems on it, but he admitted that he shouldn't have put so many on there afterwards. He did make some errors while teaching, but he wasn't constantly messing up. He's a nice guy and open to suggestions about his teaching style. He also curves VERY generously.
This was my third time taking Stats here and he was 100 times better than the rest of them. He knows the material inside out, does not read from the book like the others, and explains the material like he is having a conversation with you. The tests are on the hard side, but fair if you have done all the assigned homework.
Is a great guy, super nice, and usually will work with the class to get as much help/extra credit as needed. He is very smart, not the best math teacher I've had but If you try your best and do your homework you should be good. Did a little too many word pobles for my liking, but over all is good, might take him for statistics.
Outstanding teacher. He goes way beyond throwing around formulas. Starts and backs up every concept with real life simple examples to show the motivation behind the concept. Best college professor I have had so far. Tests are straight out of the homework. People who are complaining either don't do the homework or are missing too much class.
Excellent teacher. Does not just throw formulas around. Starts and backs up every concept with concrete examples that show the motivation for the concept. The best college professor I have had so far. Tests are straight out of the hw. People complaining either are not doing the hw or are missing too much class.
I'm bad at math to begin with but wow what hell this was. You won't know your grade till after the semester is over. If your great at math then you will love him, if not its a nightmare!
The best professor to actually learn statistics from.
I took him for a 6 week statistics class in the summer, though it was a difficult class he was really clear and helped everyone who was struggling. The tests came from the homework so you have to do the homework questions. I would recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Nghiem is young and a nice guy. However, he's not a very good teacher. Tests are very difficult. A sample test is available so you can practice. He always asks if there are any questions/comments, so take advantage of that. Tests and final exam are curved. To receive the curve, you must correct the answers you got wrong.Hard class, but doable.
A great teacher and also a nice person. I took this class previously online and was totally lost. He knows the subject like the back of his hand, doesn't read from the book or talk to the board, and is clear and patient. That makes all the difference in learning this stuff. However, have the right expectations and do all the work.
Dr. Nghiem is an expert in the subject and very helpful. He's very accommodating, but his class is no easy A. Study hard, do the HW's, and ask questions, and you should be fine.
You know the old saying, "The smartest guys in the room?" Well, he's the guy that's in that room. Take Statistics with him. His lectures are dynamic and thought-provoking. Unlike with most other classes that are useless, whatever you put in, you WILL get your money's worth.
He was a pretty good teacher. He always went over each type of problem until everyone understood. He puts 10-15 point curves on all of the tests so it's not that bad. As long as you complete all of the math lab homework and do extra credit, you can get d's and c's on his exam and still pass with a B.
He's the best math teacher I've ever had. I had him for intermediate algebra 2 years ago, and then again for College algebra this year. He explains things really well and is always open to questions. Tests can be difficult, but he's very fair and gives extra credit for corrections. Taking detailed notes is a good idea. Take him if you can!
Very nice teacher, but is very confusing. Didn't actually learn anything in the class, but once I went home and did the homework on mymathlab.com, it was much more understandable. Had to pretty much teach myself the concepts. Great guy, but not the best teacher. Everyone was confused in class, but he would try to give more examples.
Great professor. He doesn't read from the book like a robot or talk to the board. And he brings a lot of real life examples into the lesson and in answering questions. But have realistic expectations and do the homework.
Very difficult to understand, he was so confusing and very unclear when answering any questions the students had. He does give 20 point curves to the tests, but that's to show how bad everyone does. You can get by with a B in the class, without fully understanding what he is teaching. Not the best Stats teacher, wish I could have taken someone else
Awesome professor! He knows statistics inside and out and cares whether he is connecting with the class. He is constantly repeating difficult parts, stops mid-sentence to answer questions, and is always asking the class if there are questions. People complaining he is confusing are not doing homework regularly and not paying attention in class.
The best stats prof I've ever had, and I have had 3. The last two were nervous in class, read the book to us, and couldn't answer any questions not worked out in the book. This one was a true expert and answered all questions. I ended up having a genuine interest in stats after this class and now read the news with a keener perspective.
This class is the hardest I have ever worked in school, and the grade I am the most proud of. The professor's lectures are organized and clear. It's obvious he has mastery of this subject, and he cares about the students. He is respectful towards all questions and has course policies that help students learn at every step.
Great teacher, explains everything very well. Gives curves, and also gives chances to get extra credit on exams.
Great teacher, Gives curves, and gives makeup tests if you can't be there for test day. Very nice and clear.
I would encourage everyone to take Dr. Nghiem for STA2023. Statistics can be an intimidating subject but he presents the concepts clearly. He's a professor who rewards effort and listens to every student's questions and concerns. Do the homework and study the practice tests and you'll do well.
He is the best. In each hour of his class, I learned and appreciated math more than in the previous 10 years of math classes. Run to take his classes.
This class was by far the most difficult class I have taken. I was in class for almost every lecture, paid attention, took notes, and did all my homework. Spent tons of my time in math lab. Dr. Nghiem says he is available to answer questions by email but you could have fooled me on that one. Miserable experience. Avoid his class!!!
Great professor. Very clear and thorough. He really knows what he's talking about and relates it to real world scenarios, which makes it easier to understand. He's very fair with grading and very generous with curves on the test. Do your homework and do it on time!! It will save your grade. This class is hard and you HAVE to do your part.
Excellent professor. Lectures are like he is having a conversation with you and not the usual tired powerpoints like other classes. He absolutely knows what he is talking about and really tries to get you to dig deep. He goes way out of his way to help you learn. I have pages of email conversations where he has helped me work out problems.
I went in expecting things to be pretty difficult, and that it was. However, Ngheim gave fair curves, and did his best to explain. Doing the homework helped a HUGE amount. I spent many hours in the math lab but it was well worth it in the end. He is pretty relaxed and usually lets out a bit early. I recommend him to anyone that needs a math class.
I had him for Java programming. Great class. I took C++ before this and I learned so much more about programming in general in this class. He emphasizes practice over theory and testing. I wrote so much code in this class with good feedback every step of the way. After this class, I feel like I could code anything in Java.
I took him for Java and he lectures really fast and he's trying but I feel it'd be easier had I had prior knowledge of Java beforehand. He speaks as if he assumes you know more than you do. He will help you though and he's pretty fair with grading. You don't have to read the book but it helps. It was okay.
Great teacher for a difficult class. He knows this subject like the back of his hand. He doesn't need to look at the book, notes, etc. If you are taking this class and would like to actually learn you will. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work but well worth it. He is a very kind instuctor. Highly recommended.!
Best professor! Very helpful and quick to respond to questions! He is an expert at this subject! Just warning that statistics is a very difficult course, so expect tons of homework and to put in a LOT of work. He is generous with curves, do the practice tests and don't worry. The final will save you, just focus and study. Would highly recommend him
He is very knowledgeable about mathematics however, making it clearly understood is lacking. I am very good at math, but struggled severely in this class. Homework is computer generated so he doesn't know the problems given or just doesn't look over them. Only 4 test including final. Homework counts as on credit.
Do not take anyone else for Statistics! Dr. Nghiem responds to emails within 24 hours. He applies extra credit. He has 2 proctored exams. Dr. Nghiem will do what it takes to insure you pass his class as long as you do your part and do the work. It was the hardest class I have ever taken but had a great professor to walk me through it.
Do not take any other professor for statistics!! This was an easy class for me; I hardly studied, but be prepared if you are not a math/logical person. He does a lot of examples, and if you don't really get it in the lectures. Dr. Nghiem does everything he can to make sure you understand everything--just email him.
Statistics was very difficult for me and this was the only class I had left to pass before moving on to a 4 year. He WILL do everything in his power to help you if you just ask. He will email you back and take the time to sit down and teach you! I didn't understand it every well but he made it passable for me.
This is guy is like a math magician. He knows exactly what he is doing and consistently blows my mind in class.
He is excellent. He is a master of the subject, and teaches to make sense of all the theory and formulas using lots of real life examples. The homework is very useful to reinforcing lectures. Students who don't like him are not participating in class or expecting a college class to give out all the test questions.
This is the second professor I have for this course. You don't appreciate how good this professor unless you have a point of comparison. After the first class with him, I understood what the purpose of this course is. He explains everything very conceptually and intuitively. Highly recommended.
Teaches clearly, deep knowledge of subject, patient, kind, and won't hesitate to stick to the topic until everyone gets it. Very highly recommended.
Only 3 tests, he has a hard time getting the information across in a clear manner. Homework problems different from tests. Tests are very hard. Studied endless hours for each test and still didn't do well because tests are differs from study guides and homework.
I took him for College Algebra and he is very sweet and a good teacher. His tests are really hard but he gives 10-20 pt curves depending on the class average. You don't automatically get the curve, you have to re-do your test at home so you learn. Also the final exam replaces any and all tests grades that are lower than it which is very helpful
Nghiem was a great professor, I feel like he did get the course objectives across well, but it was hard to keep up at times. We didn't really use the book, but we used mymathlab for homework. Tests were multiple choice, only four tests, the fourth test was the final.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's a complete genius and knows and loves the subject. You can tell he wants all of his students to understand and pass. I took his statistics class for the 6 week summer course which wasn't a good idea. It's a tough subject and 6 weeks was not enough time especially if you're not good in math.
Man, this was a hard class, but I'm so glad I took it with him. He knows the stuff cold and is patient. He will go over it again and again using different real life examples until everyone gets it.
Can't teach! Terrible! Find another professor or you will be teaching yourself all semester!!!
I learned a ton in this class. He explains everything in a simple, big picture way and is very kind to everyone asking questions and trying to learn. Tests are fair and he's generous with curves.
This is my second time taking the class. He is world's better in both knowledge and teaching ability. He talks to you about the material like he is having a conversation or telling a story, and never reads from a single Powerpoint slide. His examples relate to real life, not abstract theories. I learned a lot. Highly recommended.
A nice guy, but not great teacher. He's friendly and all, but he knows the math so well himself that he can't simplify it enough for the average student to succeed.
I learned so much in this class. I also did the homework, listened in class, and asked questions. His lectures emphasize understanding and not plugging in formulas. He is super patient and kind and will back up and teach other course's material if you need it.
Only thing good I have to say is, he gives nice curves for his exams.
I'm going into psychology and really needed to learn this, not just get a good grade. I put a lot into the class and got a lot out of it. He is a master of the subject. He patiently answers all questions and repeats as necessary until everyone gets it. There is a lot of hw but it is good to reinforce all the topics.
You can tell he loves math and teaching. Every class was inspired, and not "here's the formula...". I had fun and learned at a level where I was thinking and not just plugging in formulas. He's by far the best math teacher I've ever had. Just prepare to do hw. But it's no big deal, because you get as many attempts as you need.
You will be teaching yourself all semester. Find another professor!
A great prof that knows what he's talking about, is patient with questions, and has high standards for students. Those who don't like doing homework, which is huge in helping to understand, and those used to having the test questions handed to them on review sheets, don't like him. He does everything he can to help you actually think and learn.
I had him for an online course. It was well structured, with clear assignments, exams, deadlines, and announcements. It was a lot of hw but exams were fair. If you do all the hw, you'll do well.
Great professor. Knows his stuff cold and doesn't ever just read from the book. Answers all questions patiently and will repeat a topic until there are no questions and everyone gets it. Homework is fair and worth a lot. Highly recommended.
Dr. Nghiem was a good teacher for those who liked math. Algebra was so hard but I just couldn't grasp it in his class. Not to say everyone couldn't, because he does have a good teaching ability. I just don't know what it was about his teaching style, but I could not retain all of that.
Teaches clearly with obviously a love for the subject and for teaching. His passion and expertise during lectures is infectious.
He was very good at explaining things in simple, everyday terms and got into why we care about topics. Homework is fair. Exams really test for understanding and are hard, but curves given are fair.
He was my third stats professor. He was the only professor that did not just read from the book. He explained the same concepts but in a fresh style. Having diff perspectives of the same concept made it much easier to absorb the concepts. He also clearly cares whether students learn and will stay extra hours after class to explain all concepts.
Lectures are clear and filled with real life examples. He is tremendously knowledgeable, and also a nice person. He patiently addresses all questions, even review from previous courses. You will do well if you pay attention in class and do all the hw.
Not a clear teaching style. Homework problems are very different from test questions. Very confusing!
Learned Java from him. Went from not knowing how to code at all to building real, useful Java programs in 4 months. He knows a ton, assigns relevant projects, and was always there to help.
I took him online and it was very organized and straightforward. You'll do well if you do all the assignments.
Makes class engaging with relevant anecdotes and connects the material to other areas of math and life. It's obvious he has a deep knowledge and love for math and teaching. He encouraged us to think and explore in solving problems and not just hunt for a formula.
The online class had a lot of homework, but not difficult. If you set aside time to do all the work, you'll be fine.
Statistics is not an easy course. If you take Dr. Ngheim's class and expect an A or a B, you will need to work for it. If you're like me and struggle with anything remotely looking like a word problem, step into this class knowing you're going to have to work. Tutoring has helped me immensely. Pay attention, do the homework, & get tutoring.
Great calculus professor. Always connects the details with the big picture. Is patient and always happy to review concepts from previous classes so that everyone understands
Professor Nghiem is an outstanding calculus professor. He is very patient and responsive to any and all questions. He enjoys his job and is passionate about is craft.
I took it as a 6 week summer class and I thought it was great. The lectures are long and its a lot to learn but he really enjoys teaching the material so it was not bad at all. He has good real life applications to the material. There is a lot of homework but it prepares you well for the exams. He definitely made statistics more enjoyable
Stats is NOT an easy class. He does his best to put everything into a way you can understand it. Two tests, a final and homework count for your grade. He does allow a rework of the test to bump your test scores. You have to work in this class, do the homework, or else you won't understand it. That's stats for you. Take advantage of the math lab!!!
There are 3 tests and homework. each are worth 25% of your grade. Pay attention and attend class. You will probably have to go to the learning lab for help. He curves all the tests. I would take him again.
Nghiem is a great professor for people who don't get math. He goes through material slowly and encourages deep understanding of topics. That being said, if you're a person who understand math pretty easily, you'll get annoyed about how long he takes to get through sections. He's super nice and approachable, but isn't great at responding to emails.
Professor Nghiem, V is an excellent teacher. He explains the material clearly; He is there for you when you need help; He helps students to reach their highest potential; He encourages you all the time... I already took two of his classes, and I will definitely have his statistic.
I took his statistics online and lets just say, anyone could do his job. His powerpoints were useless and so was the textbook you need to buy. The class it self isn't THAT hard but you'll need to use google a lot. The study guide he gives you for the midterm and final is nothing like the actual exams.
I highly suggest taking statistics online. Not hard if you do homework. You get two weeks to finish tests, homework, and discussions. Tests and homework are all online except for midterm and final. He gives you a practice midterm and final which only helps a little bit. ONLY TAKE NOTES ON THE HOMEWORK. You do not need to read the powerpoints!
-Sometimes spent too much of class going over the homework and too little time teaching material - 2 tests and a final. The final is HARD. He forgot to email us and let us know we could use a cheat sheet -expect 3+ hours of hw a week for a grade -Grades on a curve but it is challenging to get higher than a C
I took the online class. It was organized and if you do all the assignments you will do well.
I took statistics at another college before taking this course. Stats is just a hard subject, period. But this professor goes out of his way to explain it as clearly as possible, with real life examples, stories, anecdotes. He emphasizes intuitive understanding, and never reads from a book or powerpoints.
Awesome teacher. I literally dropped out of college at one point because I hate stats so much. Finally I took it and with this teacher it went much better than I ever thought. He will really help you think and will curve tests if the class does bad (mine did). Make sure to do all homework and study and you will come out with a decent grade like me.
Doctor Nghiem is a great professor I took him for a 6 week calculus class over the summer. The class is pretty tough but if you give it your all and practice you should do fine. I would definitely recommend him. He also curves grades based on the class average and he is very passionate about his work.
I took this class on. He really isn't involved; however, it is overly difficult. Tests are nothing like his practice tests but the questions are found on study plan and in the homework. Pay attention to definition questions and reading assessment questions on homework. They will show up as R.A.###. Both the midterm and final are proctored.
Perfect professor if you really want/need to understand material. He is very thorough. When done explaining each portion of the material, he will ask if there is anything particularly confusing to clear up. Only negative is his practice tests and HW (sort of) leave you in the dark on what to expect on the tests. You should study it all.
This class was easyish bc I watched the videos for each lesson in mylab and used the "help me solve this" feature on the homework and i did all my assignments, but i called his office 2 different times this semester and he never got back to me. midterm&final werent the same as the practice tests, but on the same concepts so i was slightly prepared.
2 tests, 1 homework grade, and a cummulative final. Over all Vinh is a really great teacher but if you dont understand something Id definitely suggest speaking up or heading to the math lab. All of his tests are based on the same topics learned in class but taken to the next level to really assess understanding. His study guides arent helpful!
Stats is difficult but he made it as simple as possible and is great for people terrible at math. Its really clear what you need to know if you use all resources. MyMathLab homework is a huge part of youre grade and worth doing to better understand everything. He really does everything to boost your grade and hes super laid back. Ask questions!
This online course had a lot of hw and being in a live class probably would have made the class easier, but it's the tradeoff of not going into class and being able to have a flexible schedule. I did all the work and did well in the class.
The midterm and final count for 50% of the overall grade, and they are both proctored. The study guides he provides are nothing like the actual exams, which makes them very hard. There is a lot of homework and it helps to use the examples but it sometimes can be hard to earn full credit on even the homework. Dont take this class for an easy A
HARD tests, but do your homework and see him during office hours
Grades were 25% Exam 1, 25% Exam 2, 25% Final Exam, and 25% Homework. Homework was online with MyMathLab. If the final exam was higher than exam 1 or/and 2 you could replace both or one with the final exam grade. Didn't need textbook if you're someone who prefers in class learner because everything was taught in class.
Professor Nghiem was a great professor throughout the semester. He presented the material in an understandable and broken down way. Some lectures can become difficult to follow, but he provides more than enough help if you are in need. There are few grades that contribute to the final grade, but his policy is extremely generous. Would take again.
online summer, will pass but not bc of him If you email him do not expect a reply unless its in 5-7buisness days by then the homework is already dueother students all agreed that he is doing the bare minimum emailed him about it to quote him teachers have more important things than email their students if you're a online teacher thats how youteach
Excellent professor. Always focuses on the big picture so I understood what the point of what I was learning at each step was. I took this class before with another professor and got totally lost in all the details. This professor knows it cold and can always explain it in an intuitive, simple way.
I took this online. Great course. Everything is laid out. Videos, lectures, assignments, and exams all well organized.
I take all of my classes online and this will be my third math class I've taken. He's been the worst professor I have taken online at all my years at Eastern Florida. He NEVER emails you back so if you need help or have questions don't even bother to email him because he'll ignore it. Wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Not a bad professor, just does not email back when you really need help. The class was hard itself because I am not good at math. Tutoring will help a great deal. I took this online. It might be best to take it in class if you are not good with math. Teacher has videos and slide shows to help but overall, you are on your own with if taking online.
Great professor and class. Everything you need is laid out online. I had questions understanding the material sometimes and he was always helpful over email or in office hours.
Great professor take him you will pass! One of the best math teachers on the planet. Take him you won't regret it!!
Im terrible at stats and if you're like me you don' t want to take this class. He's too smart to stoop down to someone level that has no clue whats going on and he never lets you leave early even though his classes are almost 3 hours long and we already learned what we needed to. This is my 2nd time taking the class, waste of time if you don't need
I do not like math and I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Nghiems class. He gave very detailed lectures and would not hesitate to explain any questions you had. He also lets you correct what you got wrong on tests for partial credit which is a big help, as well as providing accurate practice tests before exams.
Not really a good teacher to chose if you are NOT very good in math. He talks very fast and expects you to already know the work. Test were easy, all multiple choice. If you couldn't finish the homework in time he would push the date back for you. Due to covid-19 we had to switch to online class. He is NOT a very good online teacher at all.
I am NOT good at math, but I really enjoyed his stats class. His lectures were strictly example problems and it was extremely helpful. He allows test corrections and curves. Grading was of HW (25%) and 3 tests (each 25%). Homework is due each week, but it isn't a whole lot. He responds quickly to emails and is available to help outside/after class.
Came to class late quite a few times, but would have Starbucks in his hand. Talked to us as if we knew everything already, would take all class to solve maybe 4 questions if you're lucky. Swapped to online due to Covid-19 and didn't do zoom calls with us, just posted links to lousy YouTube videos, may or may not respond to emails.
Excellent professor. Explains concepts like he is talking to the layperson. Always emphasizes the big picture and what the whole point is. Is patient and reviews old concepts or from earlier. My class was switched to online at half the semester due to covid-19. Lectures switched to videos from the textbook.
I took this class online. Everything is laid out and self contained. There were parts I needed to understand more than what was in the book. When I emailed the prof for help, he ended up giving me Zoom appts for hours each call over the course of a week, until it was clear. He explained the concepts thoroughly and leagues clearer than the book.
Took his stats course online due to COVID-19. DO NOT take this guy unless you enjoy teaching yourself the ENTIRE semester. Heavy on the homework, and did not post his lecture notes anywhere. Have to read book if you want to pass. Maybe he's better in person but I'm not gonna risk finding out.
Had him during Covid, so class was online. Prerecorded videos with lots of hw. Videos and book were fine for completing hw and tests, but I wanted extra understanding because I'll be needing stats later for my career. He set aside lots of time with Zoom appointments to explain the material to me carefully and deeply. Goes out of his way to help!
Do not take this professor's stat class online. He is absent, takes days to reply to emails, we got through half the semester before the criteria matched the syllabus. He doesn't give helpful feedback and clearly has better things to do. Final and midterm exams DO NOT match homeworks or chapter exams... Do yourself a favor.
Professor seems very smart and good at what he does. Was offered the chance to do a zoom meeting if I needed extra help, but I actually didn't get a reply back until about a week and a half later so there went that chapter exam... good guy but don't recommend online class with him.
Online course. Everything was structured and laid out. For questions or help understanding the why, he went out of his way to help with extra Zoom calls. Knows stats inside out and explains clearly and in depth
The online class was well organized. I had some confusion about how to do some hw and general confusion about some of the material. He first answered questions by email, but in great detail. Then he suggested that if I still needed help, I could make an appointment for Zoom meetings, where explanations were so clear and in depth
For the record he does have good reviews for his in person class but DO NOT take his online stats. he doesnt read his emails because Ive sent 3 over the semester and not one was replied to,There are only 4 grades in the class, the lectures are from Pearson from like 2003, hw does not match the tests. Find a different professor for this class.
Everything is graded by the computer and there is no extra credit. You have to put in your answers perfectly or it is all wrong so be careful.
All you have to do it try. He curved the midterm and final, homework towards a good portion of the grade. Put in the time and you will pass easily.
You will be alone with the book & selected exercises. No grades on Canvas but on Pearson software. If you have questions they need to be overly specific and feedback is obsolete. 25% HW & 3 exams. $10 proctor live, the last one covered the all year (announced a few days before exam) instead of what we studied for 6 weeks. Will break GPA :( BAD Prof
This prof goes out of his way to help you learn. But you have to try. All the online resources are laid out, and if you have questions, and he even made appts to talk to me over zoom for 2 hours at a time, until I felt comfortable with the material. His explanations are clear and go deep, past formulas. He is there to help, you just need to try.
If you are wanting to do it online; don't. I am a straight-A student who is very talented in math and his class is the hardest I've ever taken. It might be because I took it online but this guy never replies to emails and has everything graded by a computer. If you ever have questions then ask classmates if possible because he doesn't reply.
This class is known by all CS majors everywhere to be notoriously difficult. I was so scared coming into the class, I prepped by watching videos on YouTube. That made me even more scared, since the concepts were so difficult and abstract. Well, he made all those difficult topics, like Big O Complexity, so natural and obvious. He has a gift!
You need to let him know when you need help and be proactive about your learning. He has set aside hours a day several times a week to go over anything I was confused about. Also, he has replied to every email promptly. It says clearly in his syllabus that he does not reply to anything already stated in the syllabus, like requests for free points
Outstanding professor. Because of him, I understand and actually like calculus. Explanations went deep and made me get what the point of all the equations were. He often spent extra time going over questions, even answering lots of 'why' questions that were not answered in the book. He cared so much about whether we understood the material!
Statistics is my worst nightmare and I'm good at math. Bless this professor for his generous grading curve. He added 20 points to one exam! I failed 2 exams and still passed! Available through zoom when I needed help, which was pretty often. I would suggest taking statistics in person, but if you have to take it online, go with this professor.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND! Especially if youre taking it online. I have been an A student all my life, and this is the first class to trouble me. You have to teach yourself. He does not provide lecture videos or any help. Responds to emails late and with little information.
Not your typical prof who just says to memorize the formulas bc that's how it is. This prof clearly understands the subject deeply and takes hours of own time over zoom appointments to make sure I understood the subject and had every single question answered. Never had a professor who cared more and made me appreciate learning more
Professor expects too much from you for example there is too much to remember for the exams and I am definitely not a Math person but he does reply to emails very fast and gives curves on the exams. There is good and bad. The exams are a big part of your grade and there are 3 proctored exams.
I can't speak to his in-person classes, but DO NOT take his online statistics course. I put in close to 40 hours on his homework. I never got any instruction at all, we exclusively worked through pearson's mylab and mastering. It felt like slamming my head into a brick wall for hours. a big test curve brought the average to passing. run far away.
This professor is a good professor. The work is hard but as long as you get a tutor to help you you will be okay, also make sure you study!
Great professor. I had hated math all my life until I had this professor. Has a deep understanding of the material and is able to make difficult ideas clear and accessible. He continued to schedule extra appointments to talk and depth about concepts and answered my questions patiently.
I took this course before with an atrocious professor who just read from the book and didn't seem like she actually understood it herself. Night and day difference with this professor. He understands it inside and out, explains it clearly and in creative ways. Also, went out of his way to help during office hours and appointments.
Online class was clear and well laid out. He was available for appointments for extra help for Teams meetings. His explanations were deep and clear! Very helpful and caring professor
I took his class online and if you are good at math go for it but I dont recommend taking this class online at all unless you can teach yourself. Hes a good teacher (was open for team virtual meetings for 1 on 1 extra help), but its just a super hard class. 3 tests throughout the course with small curves but all proctored tests. VERY DIFFICULT
Be ready to teach yourself everything, 50+ HW assignments and three proctored tests. There is literally no study guide or prep for the tests, so you better hope you studied the right thing. The final is cumulative. Skip this and go to College Algebra, its not worth it. Silver lining: Does grant a generous 15% curve on tests since most people fail.
DO NOT take his class. You have to pay for a textbook AND an access code, to then teach yourself everything. There are no modules, no announcements, and theres not even a grades section on canvas to know your grade. He uses a horrible proctoring program which has made me fail exams. Something always goes wrong and he does nothing to help.
Do not take this teacher!!! Professor Nghiem sets you up for failure!! You have to teach yourself everything. I also had issues with the proctoring program he used and I would not be able to take the test due to blank screens. Every time I would email him he wouldnt respond until 3AM the next day and would not help me at all. So much for teaching.
Get the proper calculator (TI83/84). This will help tremendously. Reach out for help! Any time I felt lost I sent an email to set up a 1-1. His knowledge and understanding of the subject matter is deep & vast. You will have to put in A LOT of work. Test heavy, but the curve helped. 25% of grade is HW, so just do it. Use all Pearson resources!
All of the work is online through Mathlab. He does not communicate, but he will respond if you reach out. You will teach yourself completely. The work load is pretty heavy, about 4 assignments a week with 40 questions on each. All 3 tests are proctored, be prepared to know the material.
Simply put, I would not have passed without his help. He was very kind, helpful, and thoughtful when it came to a struggling student, and his meetings were always pleasant. Amazing teacher, would take again if I could.
Very clearly a teacher who knows how to properly teach a subject. He knows how to convey the subject matter to his students in a clear manner and assigns homework that is relevant and easy to complete. A good math professor for someone who may not be the best with math (or for someone who is).
Dr. Nghiem was unbelievably helpful. Stats is hard, but he provided real class recordings and note slides, which are more helpful than the actual textbook. If you reach out to him, he responds & will set up a virtual meeting to work through problems. You *MUST* study, practice, review, and work hard. Grading curves help! Suggested calc: TI-36X PRO
I took Prof. Nghiem's class online at first and failed. Then I took it in person, and I did a lot better. The lectures make a difference. He teaches easier ways to do things than the book does. The HW is minimal, about 2-10 questions. I am not a fan of MyMathLab, the tests/HW are on there, but there is a curve for tests and they're open note.
Weekly homework, 6 discussion posts, 3 tests. Dr. Nghiem graded on a curve which is what saved me from having to retake this online class. He provided his lectures for each module which helped understanding the concepts. Statistics was very difficult for me but Dr. Nghiem responded to every email and was always available to help when needed.
He did a great job teaching a difficult subject and lectures were fun. Tests are ridiculously difficult even though they are open book and open notes. Exams are heavily curved thankfully. DO THE HOMEWORK. I had a 4.0gpa before this class and was just happy to pass. He has study sessions after almost every class and you should go to them.
I LOVE this professor for one reason: I have always failed math classes until his class. He explains it so clearly and you can ask a bunch of questions. I noticed he doesn't move on if you are still confused, he is patient and will give multiple examples. Don't show up for class, then don't expect to pass. He's really funny too. Taking him again.
Two Tests (ea. 25%)Final exam25%.HW is 20% DB 5%. Curves grades. Pre-record lectures could use update. responsive to emails but explaining through email text was not helpful. I used brainfuse tutors which is hit/miss. Searching YT for problems shows statcrunch to solve but he doesn't allow this on tests. Take in person if you have doubts.
This professor has improved a lot. The online Stat class was definitely the best online math class at EFSC. The professor provides detailed lectures on all material, PowerPoints, and is accessible to help with material. Three HonorLock tests are annoying, but Nghiem provides a generous 20%-25% curve. Usually 2-3 short MyLab HWs weekly.
Actually uploads full-length lecture vids for students. HW lessons are very short (make sure you go back and practice concepts in the study plan before tests cuz you'll forget). The 3 tests are all open book/open note. Generous curves on test grades. 6 DBs only due at the very end of the course.
Somewhat easy class, long lectures posted as youtube videos, but they cover pretty much everything you need to know. The homework is usually short and simple. The tests were proctored with honorlock but were open note and book. He also grades the tests with a curve. There were some simple discussion boards all due by the end of the semester.
I took this class as a transient student over the summer here at this college and it was really easy and clear what was on tests and such, the only thing was because the summer session is so sort not all the material was covered but the homework "filled in all the gaps" as he would say. If you need or want help, he is really good at providing it.
Initially I was incredibly scared to take this class cuz of the statistics horror stories I heard math isn't my strong suit. He made a seemingly hard class easy to comprehend. The tests were difficult, but he generously curves them. Attendance isn't entirely necessary, but encouraged (he has vid lectures). Always ask questions in class
Genuinely wants his students to pass, and will spend the whole class answering questions if needed. Although there is a lot of homework and it is worth 25% of your grade, the test grades have the biggest impact. There are three and they are all proctored through honorlock, but are open note and textbook. The best thing to study is homework.
Homework is 20%, tests 75%, and discussion boards 5% of grade. HW is time consuming but you should be able to get 100% on each one. DB are due at end of semester. Tests are difficult, open note/book. Final exam includes all chapters. Curves heavy on tests. Video lectures are hard to hear. Communication is hit or miss with how fast he responds.
Nghiem is very charismatic .The class can be boring at times because you are just doing examples but I would say it's not any more or less boring than any other math class I have taken. There is regular homework assignments, I would say 2-4 per week. All assignments are on MyMathLab, the program itself is annoying but he is always willing to help.
Decent professor. I took him for online STA2023 and the hardest part was the homework. It was time consuming! The tests are proctored, and the final is cumulative. His videos are kinda hard to understand, so all in all, he is an okish professor and wouldn't really take him again. .
He's wicked smart, understands the subject inside and out, and cared whether students were learning. I asked a lot of questions over email and always got detailed responses. He also always made time when I needed direct interaction and scheduled online meetings. I ended up really understanding the subject deeply after having him as a professor
Dr. Vinh Nghiem's teaching falls short. Lectures lack organization, making learning impossible. Random math problems are thrown without structure, leaving students unable to comprehend. Tests seem designed for failure. Avoid his class for a better learning experience.
Very knowledgeable and caring professor. I took this class with another professor in the past, who just read from slides and the book, and was awful. This professor's classes are basically like telling interesting and engaging stories to present the material and it is very easy to understand the big picture. He is also very generous with curving.
The lectures and homework examples are too easy compared to the wording of the questions in his tests. The tests also include sections of knowledge that he doesn't cover, or if he does cover them, it's very simplistic. This makes it challenging to apply that knowledge to the test nearly all of the time. The lecture videos are terrible.
I have never before struggled with math until I took Professors Nghiems class. All I can say is that whatever you do absolutely do not take him as your professor choose literally anyone else. He grades on a curve and verbatim designs his tests for you to fail. He's a nice guy but a terrible teacher. Lectures were impossible to understand. Goodluck.
This is the first math teacher I have ever had that focuses on real understanding and not just throwing formulas around. He has a deep understanding of the subject and cares that students truly understand. He responds to questions over email promptly and schedules long Teams meetings sessions to discuss the class material until I truly understood
Took this class online, every test was heavily curved because of the low scores everyone would get. He would assign entire chapters to do in one week despite the in-person classes being way behind us. The videos he would upload to canvas would be extremely hard to hear and you can barely see what he's writing on the whiteboard. Would not recommend.
This class and professor are the best for students who want to learn and understand the material. His lectures make it easy to understand the big picture and then the details are honed in. Exams are very similar to the hw, which have unlimited attempts. The professor is also very prompt with responding to questions and gives detailed responses
Class was well organized. Video lectures were quite helpful and focused on understanding the big picture. They are the length of a class lecture, about 40 minutes and not a bite sized online video. Homework reinforces the lectures, and exams are similar to homework. He is also responsive with email and gives detailed help and explanations.
Grade relies heavily on 3 honor lock tests. No matter if you pass all the homework you must pass the tests to pass the class. NO EXTRA CREDIT. Not friendly.
I would say if your taking this class to know that he does not do a great job a teaching and often makes mistakes. His homework can be challenging and the test and difficult. Every test we had got some kind of curve the biggest being a 20% curve
Best math teacher I have ever had, hands down. Emphasized understanding and thinking and got me to get the point of all the equations. Def take him if you actually want to learn.
My problem with learning math in the past is I never saw what the point of learning it was. He has a whole lecture on day one talking about that. He really stresses understanding every step, why it is that way, and what the main point is. He really is the best to truly learn and understand. His exams are fair and similar to the homework.
Class was pretty cut and dry, read the textbook and do the practice questions through MyLab. Tests were very heavily weighted (25% each) but they came from the same question bank as the hw.
I was failing the ENTIRE semester. Only three tests the whole semester and homework barely helps your grade. Does not care about his students. I feel like I learned nothing. Most of the students were failing each of the tests which had to be heavily curved.
His lectures are really good and hw reinforces the lectures. If you pay attention in class and do hw without just clicking on the answers, then you will do well in the class. His email responses to questions about how to do problems were prompt and detailed. He also made extra time to meet the beyond the posted office hours. Very caring prof.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I have never written a review on here, but this time I had to. This is possibly the WORST professor at EFSC. His lectures are nothing like his homework or tests and each test is worth 25% of your grade. No extra credit is given, and he does not respond to emails until weeks later. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
If you do what you are supposed to do, the class is easy and you will learn a lot. He explains the big picture with a depth that other teachers are not able to do. He is knowledgeable and patient in answering questions and answered my questions over email promptly and in depth
He is extremely knowledgeable and also patient and caring. He always answers student questions patiently and reviews previous material while he answers questions. He teaches so that students can understand why and not just remember the material. Some of the material I saw in a previous class but actually understand it now
He spends the first hour going over hw questions, so we didn't get much time to learn new stuff. We didn't even finish the entire course by the semester end. He inserted some scantrons wrong, which led to some students getting WRONG GRADES. This turned 1 of my classmates 80 into a 20. We had to bring it up to him. Does NOT respond outside class.
The best math teacher I've ever had. Patiently answered every question from multiple angles so that students can understand. Knows the material like the back of his hand and is always patient to review past material while explaining current question. Also, met with me many times for office hours and teams meetings. Goes above and beyond
This is a professor who deeply understands the material, not reading from powerpoints or from the book, as well as caring that students are actually learning. The homework and exams are straightforward from the lectures, and any questions I had were answered quickly over email. Didn't plan on any taking any math classes after this but will now.
I took this class after withdrawing from another teacher's class. I didn't learn anything in the other class because the other teacher was just reading from the book and unable to answer questions on why things are. I needed this class for calculus and engineering. This prof cares patiently answers all questions and cares about real learning
He was an excellent professor who explained a difficult subject in ways that make sense. The hw and tests reinforced the lecture videos and straightforward if you watch the lectures. The tests are already fair and on top of that he gives curves based on how the class does. Also, very prompt with helping over email and scheduling online meetings
Agreed, the best professor in statistics. Explains a normally dry, difficult subject from different easier angles. Also very patient in answering student questions and will review the same concepts in different ways until the class understands. Tests are fair and similar to hw. Also curves generously. Also answers email quickly and in detail.
Has a deep understanding of the subject and is able to present it in multiple viewpoints that are easy to understand. Patiently answers all questions and even reviews concepts from earlier classes to build understanding. Tests are fair and similar to hw as long as you don't rely on View and Example on hws
Excellent professor who I learned a lot from, and it was the only math class that made me interested in learning math. He is very knowledgeable, kind, and caring. Tests were totally fair and based directly from the hw. If you can do all the hw, the tests are straightforward. Also curves generously depending on how that class does.
His lectures are easily the best I've ever seen. They aren't boring to watch and they go through the material thoroughly. All of his tests are curved and the practice tests covers all the material that are on the tests. Emails back quickly and in a detailed manner.
Professor explains difficult concepts clearly. Homework and tests are fair if you stay on top of the material. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, a solid statistics course.
Very strong presenter of material. Also has a deep American voice that is easy to understand (which is important for math this level). Can talk a little fast, but I understood him well. Highly recommend for any online course takers.
Pretty rough professor for essentials of calc. Got multiple questions in class wrong, several questions on the test did not have the right answer in the multi choice. The curve saved the class from failing, not a great professor, seems like I nice guy but he needs to lock in. Also NO STUDY GUIDE?!? WHY!?!??
The first math class I actually understood and not memorized. This prof explains clearly and patiently answers all questions. If you understand how to do all hw questions, exams are similar. Highly recommended
His class was amazing. He records his own lectures for his online classes and is easily accessible through email if you need help. He also has weekly meetings to go over any problems or issues as a class. Weekly hw, about 10-15 questions max due every Monday, 2 tests and a final. Tests are open note. I would take all my math classes w him!
I dropped a calculus class with another professor before taking this class. I don't think anyone can really appreciate how good this professor is without the comparison. In this class, I always understood what the whole point of this class was, and always knew where the details fit into the big picture because of how he structured lectures
I believe this professor truly cares about his students. He has his own set of lecture videos and homework is at max 15 questions, but usually less than 10. Quizzes are similar to the homework as are the tests. I really wish his teaching style worked for me. Good professor, just not for me.
Professor was very engaging when he taught and he did care about how the class did but his exams were ridiculously difficult. There is a curve but it wasn't enough. Half of my class withdrawal or didn't pass. Homework is not bad & similar to exams but there's too many problems you'd need to review. Exams take home proctored even tho I was in person
This professor is not helpful at all and does not respond to any emails. His tests are worth 80% of your final grade and have to be curved very heavily because they are designed to fail. He doesn't even know what he assigns for homework and blames the students for being confused.
This class was ridiculously hard. Professor does not believe in study guides but does a poor job at reviewing content. Tests are very hard and count as 75% of the final grade. He spends the fist half of class going over homework, then goes over 5+ minutes after class so he can fit in content. Class was extremely behind due to this.
Excellent professor who patiently explains in depth and doesn't just throw formulas around. Always available for extra help by email or office hours. Will do well and actually understand by paying attention in class and doing all homework assignments
I have taken Professor Nghiem before and really enjoyed the class, decided to take him once again. It was a big mistake; he teaches around the textbook curriculum also giving his 'own' version of the formulas given in the textbook. Also he doesn't really tell what exactly is on the test. The stuff we reviewed in class was complete opposite of exam.
Understands the material deeply and explains it clearly and intuitively. Doesn't just read from the book like other math professors I had. Tests require real understanding, but can be had from understanding assigned homework problems
Best math professor I've ever had, hands down. Really understands it himself, and teaches so students understand. Explains the material from different angles until it clicks. When the class asks why we are learning ideas, he doesn't basically say "that's the way it is", like all prior teachers I had, he answers why in ways that make total sense
There was multiple times where he would do an assignment on the board and the class would correct him on it because it was incorrect. Tons of homework, usually 30-50 questions. Hand quizzes over breaks. Your grade ultimately was based off your tests, no matter how well you do on anything else it won't move your grade, a test will tank it.
Knows the material inside out, very patient, and answers questions thoroughly. Homework is worth a lot and reinforces the lectures well. Exams also similar to homework. He responds to emails promptly and in depth
Lectures are accessible online. Homework is reflected on the quizzes. Both homework and quizzes are reflected on the exams. The professor also will give a curve on the exams.
The professors lecture are long and very heavy material, we have 10 diffrent examples of the same topic which i dont like, the lectures are slow.
Tests are a high percentage of the grade and you have to self teach everything. There's only 3 tests and they're each 25% of your grade.
I like that he teaches difficult concepts with concrete examples. Every example is a different subtlety or perspective on the concept. Tests are also very straight-forward from lecture videos and hw. He also is regularly available and helpful through Teams and through email.
Took him for Algorithms, which is a famously difficult subject. He was a fabulous professor, and made an abstract, complicated subject very intuitive and made the ideas make total sense.
i understand everyone learns differently but it blows my mind to see anyone on here giving this man a good review, he's unorganized to the point he confuses himself and he's rude quite frankly. he'll insinuate to ask questions and engage but will say snarky remarks like “that should be easy” and pretty much belittle you.
Was not prepared for lectures, came up with problems off the top of his head. Was always at least 5-10 minutes late to his own class. Tests and homework are far harder than what is taught in class. I learned more from the online textbook videos on my own than I did in class.
