Don't let the accent scare you. Really awesome teacher. His study guides and quizzes are pretty much used again in the tests. He practically gives you the questions on the tests in front of class. Homework is collected but it's really easy so you should do it. A lot of extra credit! TAKE THE CLASS!!
Vinh is an awesome teacher and brilliant mathematician. He does have a heavy accent, but is easily approachable and has jokes to break the ice. I recommend taking his class because you actually will learn math. He enjoys the outdoor and shares his experience to the class.
Mr. Nyugen I can say is a awesome math teacher. He enjoys teaching math to his students and despite his accent I really learned and improved my math skills from him. I wish he taught Math 10, but he doesn't. You won't regret taking his class, trust me. He does some jokes to break the ice, but many times are corny. I do give him A for effort.
Great Professor
A great professor definitely. He is good at explaining the concepts. But eventually, something's wrong with the grading system. I got 100% and only received an A, not an A+. Although both are GPA 4.0 but A+ looks nicer in the transcript.
Hes a great professor. There is a clear outline of quizzes and exams which tell you what specific topics will be asked on them. If I didnt make careless errors, I would have definitely gotten an A.
If I can grade 0 I would. He forces you to buy the program stat crunch which is ridiculous. He should know that not everyone can afford to buy this during times like this. He even puts questions that require statcrunch on exams and quizzes. SO without it you wont pass my friend. Also his accent is super difficult to understand. Dont get tricked now
Although he is an ok teacher and he wants students to do well, his lectures are WAY too heavy and he talks WAY too fast- hard to keep up unless you re-watch lectures (I took this class online). I have also asked him to go over questions I got wrong on exams and he would not go out of his way to do that.
Professor Nguyen is great, his class is clear and concise. Idk how he is in person but online he gave us lecture notes, homework was not graded, and the quizzes and tests were not too too difficult. If you put in the work, you'll do fine. Def the best out of the math prof at DA so i strongly recommend you take him!
Good professor.
He is pretty cool. He shares a lot of fun stories during lecture. The outlines to quizzes and exams are helpful to prepare for his actual quizzes and exams. His canvas module is very organized which really help me in my learning. Highly recommend taking his class.
Awesome professor. His lecture is very clear and straightforward. His exams and quizzes come from his lecture note. Easy class to pass.
He is the one of the best math teacher I have ever had at De Anza and trust me I have taken a LOT of math at De Anza. Mr. Nguyen teaches really good, cracks a lot of jokes and his classes are very interesting in general. Math 1D is a difficult class, but he teaches really well so if you do all the homework and ask questions, u will get a GudGrade.
Great professor. Lectures are nice, test questions are fair. There is fairly bit of extra credit, so if you work hard, you'll get a good grade.
Absolutely in the top 3 math professors at De Anza. I don't want to say his classes are easy, but compared to math other professors in the department, his exams are very fair, there's a reasonable amount of homework and he makes a great effort to ensure students are following along and learning the material. Cannot recommend taking him any more.
Part 1 review: Lecture is quite clear and he explains everything you need to know, thought he does go over stuff a bit fast sometimes but he does post records. There are some discussions as extra credits. A few quizzes every week, only one question that focus on that day's lecture, have the whole day to do it with unlimited time.
The most relaxing math class I've taken. There's a lot of hw, but doable if you work on it regularly. Textbook is only needed to see hw problems. Plenty of extra credit towards the end of quarter. However, exams/quizzes are only graded by the final answer (not the process), so always double check! No webassign required.
Lots of extra credit. No WebAssign. Exams are graded on your answer (Multiple choice and fill in the blank), not your process. Quite a bit of homework but really doable. Exams questions are really fair. Great professor overall.
Although I like Professor Nguyen as a person and enjoy his lecture style, his overall class structure was brutal. His quizzes and exams are much more difficult than the problems in the textbook (even the challenge problems), and there are a lot of typos in his tests. I would recommend avoiding this teacher overall.
Pretty easy professor if you just utilize your resources if you know what I mean. 1st quiz/exam is extremely easy so if you mess up on that its kinda over. 2nd and 3rd chapter becomes harder but doable. His exams are 50% conceptual 50% computational, he basically gives you the answers for the concept problems so free 50%. Prob easiest math 1d prof.
Professor Nguyen has 3 exams, and they are open book and open note. Exams follows homework and lecture problems, and some problems are really tough. I'm glad he gave out extra credits. Overall, a pretty caring instructor.
Great teacher with a good sense of humor and teaching style. Very clear on what he's saying and knows what he's doing. Its easy to tell that he's very passionate about math. He is a great professor, but beware of the HW there are lots of them. He also has quizzes per section, but only one problem per section. His exams are pretty fair too.
I took Professor Nguyen class in this fall quarter. He have a lot of quizzes, but I have until Sunday of each week to finish the quizzes. His exams are open book open note. He made this class interesting bc he always mentions how we can use the materials in precal toward calculus courses. Professor Nguyen is one of the coolest professor.
Professor Nguyen is very nice. He gave out lots of extra credit. We had a sudden change in our instructor, and Im glad he was our new instructor bc I dont think I can survive MPS without him. His tests follows the hw, so pretty much do the hw and you pass the exam. He has many check-up quizzes, but easy.
Professor Nguyen is detail oriented. He explained the concepts very clearly. He has quizzes every sections. His exams are challenging, and he gives extra credit. I would take him again if he teaches 2A or 2B.
Has a great teaching style that helped me absorb the material better. You get a lot of practice in class working on problems. I'm going to try to take his class again for a future calculus class.
Not very good at explaining concepts throughout the term.
Cannot really understand the questions he has on tests because he doesn't not really go thru them before hand as well and put even harder questions on the test.
Does not really make sure the students are understanding the concepts being taught and moves on.
He is a very good math teacher and explains very well, and I am puzzled about his bad ratings. He clearly has strong knowledge of calculus and is understanding to students who struggle or have questions. Test difficulty resembles the difficulty of homework and group work. If you study properly, this class is a guaranteed A because of his teaching.
Do not take him if you are not good at math, he has high expectations. Does not explain things in detail and you are better off watching organic chem tutor to learn. His classes are like a review session. Exams are difficult and he grades harshly. Some parts of the exam are not what we learned. Seems like a decent guy but is pretty strict overall.
The best math professor! His lectures are thorough, and he provides lots of cool applications of calculus. Quizzes and homework follows lecture and group work problems. Plus, the exams were similar to lecture and homework problems. From my experience, Mr. Nguyen loves the subject & teaches it with lots of consideration for his students.
Tests and weekly quizzes are similar to HW and lectures and he goes over every quiz/test in class. Sometimes gave us take-home quizzes if he thought we wouldn't have enough time to complete them. Very lenient grader. Lectures aren't too clear, but he will answer any questions. Drops lowest quiz and replaces lowest midterm if the final is higher.
TAKE HIM! Vinh is literally the BEST Math professor I have ever had. His lectures are clear and helpful. He prepares students very well for the EXAMS (3 exams and 1 final). QUIZZES are once every two weeks (taken online). However, it is important to put in EFFORT to earn both knowledge and good grade. Tips: WATCH lectures and ATTEND every class.
Professor Vinh is an amazing teacher. His lectures are clear and concise. It's important not to miss a class as sometime his lectures include tips on acing your exams. If you study properly by watching his lectures and not miss a class, you will get an easy A. Make sure to use his office hours if you have any questions.
This was honestly such an amazing class! the lecture videos are online, so simple, easy to follow. I got a B+ is because I didnt study for one of my midterms! Come to class on time everyday- and get extra credit at the end of the quarter. SO GOOD. Do all of the homework!. exam Q's come from the homework and class notes so be sure to studyyyy!!
Took him for Calc 1C!! Class was somewhat difficult for me, but he was very clear as far as grading criteria and expectations. Study classwork questions before exam- this will give you a clear idea of the types of problems covered. His excitement while teaching is also really endearing and funny, and he has a really cool Youtube channel btw :P
He is a nice professor. He gave out take home quizzes, but they are hard. Exams are difficult bc there is always a proof question which sucks. His lecture is good, would be nice if he can cover more examples in class.
Professor Nguyen is a caring and funny professor. He told many funny stories in class. He gave 2 tries per quiz and all quizzes are on Canvas. There are 3 exams and 3 projects. All exams and quizzes are open book open note. He has his own note, so no need to buy any textbook.
Professor Nguyen is funny. He shares hilarious stories during lectures. His examples are straightforward and easy to understand. He has short lecture followed by group work. Quizzes and hw are due on Canvas. Exams are open book open note. He also gives out extra credit based on attendance. One of the best professors at de anza.
Summer 2023 Math 1C, 4 days for 6 weeks. Lucid, clear, amicable. Homework submitted in weekly batches, but best to do it every day. 3 quizzes + 3 exams. No notes except for final exam (write whatever you want on Series cheat sheet). If I had to take this course again: ask more questions, review derivatives and integrals.
Very interesting and funny professor, would recommend taking!! Courseload is very manageable, and tests aren't too difficult. Tests are open book and open note and open internet ;)
great teacher,he is always care about student. Sometimes i wondered how could be math10 exist in the world ,is just so easy, you can just sleep at class and get full points at every test.
So I struggled at first with this class but I think thats a fault in my part since you can actually end with a B or above in this class. For Math 1B tho, his tests arent that heavy and are 6 questions, final being 12 questions. However it is very concept heavy so make sure you are spending a good use of time with this class. HW is also 6 points.
There are 2 professors called Vinh Nguyen at De Anza --- the one I took did MATH 1B and I took him for the Fall quarter 2023. He graduated from De Anza and SJSU, and his tests aren't incredibly hard, just taken from the textbook like the homework he assigns. Doesn't usually curve. Weekly quizzes are textbook problems, open notes.
This is the best professor I've taken at De Anza. Professor Nguyen is extremely caring and wants his students to pass his class. Be prepared for a lot of homework. Take notes from his lecture videos before class starts to understand what is happening in class. 10/10 would take again.
Took this Prof for both 1A and 1B and he is a great professor. His lectures are clear and he tells you exactly what sections will be on the exams. I wish I could take him for 1C as well as hes just a great prof. Highly recommend!
Lecture = complicated and have to watch lecture videos from Youtube Give condescending cmts and rude
I honestly dont know why this professor has so many 5 ratings. Lectures are all online and difficult to understand. Do not expect to learn anything in class and expect a lot of self study. If you find yourself struggling with math and want to find a good professor that can teach well, don't take this professor.
The tests are hard. Barely got an A. Not an easy A prof. Doesn't worth the current rmp rating
He is a good professor. He gave lots of practice problems in class, most are similar to exam questions. He lets students do quiz corrections and final exam replacement with lowest exam scores.
His quizzes are online. He has 3 exams, and they are open book open note. He give feedback on the group projects before grading, so easy full credit on each. His exams follows problems he did in class. Easy class easy professor. Will retake him again for Calculus.
Professor Nguyen is an easy instructor. His exams are open book open note, and the questions are similar to what he did in class. Study from his lecture note, and you can do well on exams. There are 3 group projects and students can ask him to help out on each project.
Professor Nguyen is a kind teacher. He gave out extra credits through quiz corrections and final exam replacement with lowest exam score if you do better on the final exam. I was failing the class before the final exam, but study hard for it and ended up with passing grade. Final exam questions are similar to his final review. Highly recommended!
Self study class, lectures are online and very confusing and not clear. In class he gives work that is far too difficult and doesn't really teach. Exams are really difficult just attending the class/watching his lectures will not be enough to do well on exams. His test reviews are good though. Study hard and work through his reviews thoroughly.
He has no extra credit
Professor Vinh gives good lectures and outlines to study for the exams. He gave quiz corrections to all quizzes. His exams are tough, and the proof problems are tricky. He gives out good extra credit too.
Professor Nguyen is a nice person. He helps me with the group projects and my group gets perfect score on each one. He gave multiple tries for quizzes in Canvas. Exams in person are open note open book. Easy class and highly recommended professor to take.
I failed his class in winter quarter and pass it with a good grade in spring quarter. He helped me with my misunderstandings in his office hours. He gave new policy on final exam replace lowest exam score which help out a lot. Great professor, highly recommended.
He has a great grading strategy, so you can have a good GPA or pass the class. He is happy to help if you need tutoring. Attendance is a must if you want to pass the class and it is beneficial for the exams.
Took VK's Math 1C this summer. VK is a good person, but his lectures can sometimes be confusing because he would write out many definitions at once without any explanation. Exams are based on class examples & textbook exercises but cheat sheets & calculator are not allowed. No drop lowest test or offered extra credit, but curved 3% after the final.
All homework, quizzes, and exams are on paper. He prefers to write the last name first and upload 1 section of homework per file. Finishing the homework and reviewing the outline before the quizzes and exam, you can get a good score.
Took his summer CALC 1C. Although the professor is very caring, his lectures are often difficult to understand. I had to rely on self-studying every day because of his confusing lectures. He does respond relatively quickly, but his responses are often confusing. He is test-heavy, but he does give a 3% EC. Only take if you are proficient at math.
I agree with the previous comment. He is extremely picky when grading proof questions. Most of the students are from China, and they were very diligent, resulting in the class tests average score is very high. The class required self-study in advance to keep up. He graded assignments based on the PDF format, rather than on the quality of the work.
I took Vinh during the summer. The whole class was struggling and were getting low marks on the exams. While one may blame the teacher, the nature of calc is that it requires lots of practice, which we didnt have time to do. Regardless, he was EXTREMELY accommodating and helped us out a lot, so I ultimately passed with an A; Vinh is awesome.
Very thick accent
His tests are open book open note. If you learn how to use StatCrunch, you will be able to get A in class. The group project, be careful on it because it drops my grade down to an A-.
Aasy A teacher! everyone i knows in the summer class got A. He did a 3% curving at the end of class too.
Good person, fair tests, but complex lectures. His lectures are not intuitive, and cannot explain concepts in simple and clear language. He spent too much time on not important definitions. Fortunately, his tests are not difficult, and he told us what the questions would be. He is glad to answer questions, although he cannot expresses very clearly.
Easy A professor! His online class has weekly discussion, homework, and quiz per chapter. He has 3 exams and 1 group project. Quizzes and exams are open book open note, and he allows more than 1 attempt. Group project is interesting.
is pretty easy than most math professors, lenient grader, test questions pretty straightforward, homework is very important if you want an A, would definitely take him again if he teaches 2A/2B!
His quizzes are extremely easy, but the exam is unbelievably crazy. He may not picked the hardest but almost the heaviest claculation problem from the textbook.u are required a very strong derivative techniques in order to complete the exam on time. All students are immersed in a tense and depressing examination atmosphere. But he is a good lecturer.
The professor is pretty picky. Even your answer is correct. He still took your grades off.
I liked his lectures so much, but professor tests are heavy
I truly love his lectures, but the tests were hard. But it is Calc 3 after all.
Lectures in class can be very fast-paced. Tests are very similar to test reviews, as well as practice problems in class so if you study those it will be fine.
He is a really caring and amazing professor. Throughout the course, he taught us new concepts with easy-to-understand examples, and after that, he gave us a few problems on our own in groups. I think this was something that helped me understand the new concept properly. I'd strongly recommend him to anyone who is planning or confused to take him
Pretty hard class subject but he kind of just follow the textbook and assigns lots of textbook questions for homework. It's easy to find more resources online to help understand the material or ask him and he'll explain. Gives some points back for showing work with wrong answers but make sure you do the homework problems.
He is a great math lecturer who explains concepts clearly and cares about his students. Homework is graded on completion. Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals (9th Edition) which he sticks to, no surprises. There are weekly quizzes(fair) or tests(harder but fair). The class isn't easy, but his teaching makes it manageable. Highly recommend!
Very good, nice, understanding professor! If I could take him for the whole math series, I WOULD! His exam questions aren't difficult, and are similar to the homework questions he assigns. Quizzes around 4-5 Quizes (drops lowest one) and 1-3 questions, 3 Midterms (around 6-10 questions), and 1 Final (10ish+ questions). Fairly easy, grades fairly !
There are two professors with the same name (check emails addresses), I took my 32MPS class with Nguyen2. If you do homework, you will get good scores on his exams. He is also super patient with questions. Highly recommend him and/or the MPS program (esp if you don't like math)
(reffering to Vinh Nguyen2) His class has no BS like group projects or discussions, just pure lecture and work. Weekly HW tends to be quite long but nothing you shouldn't expect of Calculus. Quizzes and tests are directly based on the HW, and he drops the lowest quiz and test helping your grade a ton. Easy A if you put the work in.
First time taking a CC class & was nervous about Calc1A in summer, but Prof. Nguyen made it great! Lectures are him working through problems. HW is key; master it & you're set for tests. Clear rubrics, quick replies, super helpful. Tough but doable if you keep up with HW. 100% recommend!
The Goat in teaching Math in De Anza rn.
Do the homework and easy A.
It's maybe tough in the first week, but trust me this is the easiest math professor you guys have ever had.
Professor Vinh is very knowledgeable, and is more than willing to break down concepts and materials to the best of your understanding. For being my first calc professor, he is above the curve. HW's aren't mandatory, quizzes are open notes, Mid terms allow 1 cheat sheet, Finals allow 2. Be sure to read the syllabus prior to registering to be sure :)
what else I can say, the GOAT!
I took Vinh Thanh Nguyen (nguyenvinh2). Great lectures and a nice professor—I understood the material well. Homework takes a long time and has tons of questions, but it's completion-based. All exams are free response, and you get a cheat sheet on tests, but not quizzes. My class had a 2.5 unit support coreq. Overall, I'd highly recommend him.
Lectures are great, he works through problems step-by-step which you can basically just follow on the exam. He also has videos online for how to use StatCrunch, which makes review a lot easier. Everything is open note. He also relates problems to their use in the real world, which is cool. Professor is also very kind and understanding.
BEST MATH COURSE I EVER TOOK IN MY LIFE!!! I actually suck at math but I was able to ace all his quizzes, and exams as they're all open book. Super chill lecture, easy to understand. Exam questions are EXACTLY the same from exam review sheet. I would take him again for another math course!! TAKE HIM!!!
Very kind and chill professor. I suck at math, so I only got a C, but if you pay attention in class, do the homework, and study, should be fine. Grading system is very test and quiz heavy. Quizzes are open notes and for tests you are allowed one side of a full sheet of paper for a cheat sheet. You are allowed both sides on the final.
Professor Nguyen was understanding about the fact my groupmates would not cooperate with me for our final project. However, since this seems to be a common occurrence, he should better format the class to troubleshoot this. The homework was adequate.
