Pretty lazy (TA did most of the work). Exams were very difficult
Unbelivably LAZY. He is very unclear and rude.
he is very rude and arrogant and does not help his students
VEry Nice professor...
he's unclear and the class was very difficult. more than half dropped.
Extremely horrible professor. Don't take his class under any circumstances. Drop it and take it later with a different prof. He's terrible.
If you are interested in the neuroscience for your thesis take his course. He is very nice, but also very busy.
He likes to fail students
Extremely horrible professon, don't take this course with him at all. He does not have any imagination in how to make his lectures more interesting....
Material for course is dry and he's not great at livening it up. Drones on and on...for those who do not have a science background or have a short attention span I would not reccomend this class.
Quite possibly the worst professor @ york. Heed this WARNING: Do not take this course under this professor. If you want to drop your GPA then go for it. Class AVERAGE of test 55-65 no higher, ever.
dun take dis course with this guy, his undergrad was in computers and his masters was in architecture, doesnt even have any psych background. trust me on this, tryin' to help you
I do not recommend this course. Prof Goel was not helpful and his teaching style was confusing. I did not learn anything from this course, in fact I was more confused and frustrated.
By far the worst prof I've ever had. He tried to explain complicated concepts my using computer programming analogies. Thank God for the TA, Steve Prime. He was basically left to clean up the mess Goel made of the class. Tests were hard.
DROP THE CLASS ASAP!! worst prof. i've ever had! he literally whispers, very confusing. ask him a question & he'll make u more confused! his tests are extremely difficult. class everage was LOW. b/c of him i hate cognitive psyc even though i was very interested in this subject in the beginning. no matter how hard u try u wont do well in his class.
He is not a good teacher. His lectures are dry, and do not reflect test material well. He does not answer questions clearly. The tests are hard and cover a *lot* of material.
tests are extremeley hard. lectures are very confusing if you do not have a computer science background as a lot of the connections are illustrated using computer systems! do not take this course with this prof!
Would not take any subject with him - very unclear
One of the worst profs I've EVER had. Made me hate Psych. DROP HIS CLASS RIGHT AWAY! Don't make the mistake of trying to stick it out for the first month. His lectures are unclear, the way he teaches makes no sense, he is incomprehensible and none of his material ties together. The exams are hard and he's so all over the place that you can't study.
awful
worst at york
His lectures vaguely touch on the reading, his tests are his best effort to screw everyone, he doesn't answer e-mails and is slow on doing everything. He doesn't answer questions properly and uses the excuse "knowing won't help you so I won't bother answering that". Drop his class and do yourself a favor. If you are thinking of taking his class, DO
WORST EVER! he doesn't care about the students because he does not help us at all. he doesn't teach properly and his exams don't even make sense. One of my friends ta.s said that he does this on purpose so in the beginning 40% of the students drop the course. NEVER TAKE IT ITS A WASTE OF MONEY AND YOU WILL NOT LEARN ANYTHING
one of the worst profs I've ever had. lectures were incomprehensible and mainly relating to neuropsych not cognition. Never gives definitive concepts, all his concepts have to be found in his long-winded and confusing examples. you know theres a problem when the prof uses a hand-in at the end of every class in order for students to come to class
TERRIBLE Prof.! More interested in hearing himself speak than actually teaching anything. His very limited use of the textbook, combined with his reluctance to clarify/explain material make his incredibly boring lectures a waste of time.
He is quite possibly the worst professor at York. His material is dead boring and his examples, which even he gets confused explaining, will leave you asking yourself: "What did I do to deserve this horror?". Total waste of time. Only take his class if you: like being ripped off/are looking for a reason to hate PSYC / want to die of boredom.
I think the comments below say it all, because he IS boring, incomprehensible, trails off mid-sentence, and makes you question York's hiring policy. I wasn't sure if it was the topic itself that was dry, but I enjoy cognition & the text was exhilarating compared to lecture. He does help a bit during office hours though.
If you are motivated, bright, and hardworking, I definitely recommend considering Professor Goel as a thesis supervisor. I learned a ton about research, thesis writing, and running statistical analysis while working under him.
I would say to be honest he is the worst prof i have ever had. Extremely unorganized, very unclear.
All he wants to do is spread his work and fame through his readings, which are all written in a distinctively confusing style that cannot be cleared up because the author is your professor. The textbook is great, though. But the lectures and readings are inappropriate. More like an opportunity for him to boost himself.
Smart prof and very approachable if you know your material. I learned a lot about cognition, and did well on tests and assignments. Lectures and readings are a must.
Everything that has been said on here is true. I'm currently taking this course right now. He artifically inflates the difficulty level of the course by making you read journal articles that are impossible to decipher. The textbook's fine. The tests are hard. He's very rude.he's more interested in making himself feel special than actually teaching
The amount of work he expects in this half credit course is ridiculous, as he assigns journal readings to be completed bi weekly, as well as his own per lecture, on top of reading the textook and lecture slides. Also includes a paper on an class experiment, which was confusing. Other Cognition courses were far easier and required less assignments.
avoid at all costs! WAY too many unnecessary and hard to understand readings, and tests are done to confuse you instead of helping you learn. Do NOT take this class.
Very helpful. Patient. So approachable.
Poor teaching methods. for Creativity 3550 every lecture felt as if it were a different course. He does not explain the material well and just jumps over everything. ln addition it is a hassle trying to figure out what to read and what not to read.
The course itself seems very straight forward but he lacks the ability to guide the class clearly. He doesn't clarify the key ideas of articles very well leaving you confused. He changes his testing style so it's hard to gauge what is required to study. He is unable to reply to emails leaving you to rely purely on TAs. Not an easy A.
No organization within lectures. He simply jumps from topic to topic. Textbook readings vs articles vs lectures - mostly all completely different. Hard to understand what you should be studying and where your focus should be. Out of a 200 people lecture we had max 30 students comes to class on a weekly basis
Very knowledgeable professor. Extremely helpful, especially if you go see him during his office hours!
Lectures are SO BORING. Lots of work to do outside of class (heavy readings, participation in online forums every week). Structure of tests and assignments are so unclear. I don't know how to study for the tests because there is SO MUCH material and he doesn't clarify what's important. I wish I hadn't taken this class. Avoid at all costs.
Reading and homework every week, presentation every 3-4 weeks, term paper, poor feedback
Paper every week, 3 presentations 30 min long, a 20 page final paper
I took his online course. He is uses a lot of verbal fillers in his lectures. Most of them are recorded in an office-like setting so his tone of voice and tempo is slow and not engaging. The readings for the course were long and are old papers written in unnecessarily complex language, which makes it difficult to read. Overall, horrible experience
His lectures are a bore; I found myself falling asleep during every one of them. He uses the online status to run lectures longer than necessary. Misses office hours without warning. Readings full of needless, incoherent jargon. If you want an A, prepare to dedicate 25-30+ hours per week. Definitely take with another prof who is more enthusiastic.
If I could give a 0 I would. He was extremely rude and condescending in emails that he sent to us, when students asked for help, he legit told us that us struggling was good. No textbook, expects you to read papers that he wrote on the subject without giving you a basic understanding of it. 1/10 do not recommend.
Many people didn't like this Prof and I at first had very strong, negative feelings. However he was very helpful during his virtual office hours. He is trying to get you to think through hard material but if you don't get it, he will explain it until you do. If you are looking for a typical, easy class, dont take this.
This prof just read slides for a three-hour lecture (stammer). Couldn't answer students' questions properly during the lecture. Term paper is insane: 15-20 pages for a three thousand level course, and it is due during the reading week. Avoid him at all costs!
This class is one of the worst learning mistakes I've ever made. He turned a lecture to an online class and uploaded 2 hours long of him just reading the slides and not breaking it down or explaining it for us to understand. He give a lot of reading that is unnecessary just to 3 to 7 questions. And a 15-20 pages paper for due during reading week.
Horrible experience. I took this as an online summer course. I worked my hardest as this was the only course I was taking and got a poor grade. He intentionally tries to make students feel unmotivated. He sent out an email saying questions regarding the criteria for papers was stupid. His lecture slides are dull and plain. I could go on...
Absolutely HORRIBLE course, and HORRIBLE prof. He literally rambles on for 3 hours, and you it is complete non-sense. it sounds as if half the times he doesn't even know what he's saying. He doesn't explain anything. Im struggling so hard. Readings are heavy for absolutely NO reason...
Absolutely terrible
worst prof BY FAR at York U. Has no care for students, is narcissistic, and it happy to watch students do poorly because he believes that struggling is good for learning. He sets unrealistic deadlines as an "experiment" for incubation periods, which is just absurd in every way. Tests are also inconsistent, and he is not helpful when asked. AVOID
Best in the world
His lectures are really hard to listen to. When our class asked to have a better version of the lectures, he told us to check if our computers are set up properly and to buy headphones. His lectures are organized, but they are still hard to follow because he does not explain the concepts well. I felt like I taught myself the whole course.
worst prof at york hands down save yourself and take another class with another prof
This is the first, last, and only class I got an "E" grade at York. I have never felt so depressed taking a psych course before. TOO much work goes into this course. He explains the content in the most complicated/difficult way. Weekly questions are worded in a way where it makes no sense what he is asking of you. Hardest course and worst prof ever
There is an insane amount of reading every week. Almost 70 pages per reading. He doesn't care about his students and doesn't clarify anything. There's a 20-page term paper that he gives 0 instructions on. Not worth taking.
You can tell, 100%, that he's insanely knowledgable. His publications are mesmerizing, but I will be upfront and say it's the most difficult class I've taken at York yet. He will make you read, he will make you PROVE you understand by making you write lots. I respect his reasons for this but if you're not up for a mega mega challenge don't take it.
This course is very lecture heavy. Would not recommend taking this unless you want to write a 15 term paper. No feedback is provided on anything. A lot of readings required for tests - they're long and require a lot of time. His lectures are not very helpful - reads off slides without explaining anything. ;( regret taking this course
You can tell that he is very knowledgable about his field, but he gives you NO explanation on anything. His lectures are so boring and hard to follow - half the time he has to stop and think about what to say based on the slides he wrote. The only good thing about this class was the TA. Says its a 2nd yr course, it's def a 3-4 yr course.
York University should be held accountable for Professor Goel's unacceptable performance. Being a teacher requires high EQ, and exercising good judgement. Prof Goel showcased the opposite. He treats students as though they are beneath him. "Stupid questions' he said in a lecture. Referring to typical student questions about his essay assignment.
You will have a hard time understanding his lectures. He does absolutely nothing to help you out and when he does it is so vague you don't know where to begin. LOTS AND LOTS OF READING, BEWARE! And he sets a 15-20 page essay during reading week, this course is not worth the 3 credits you'll be so OVERWHELMED TRUST ME!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS PLEASE!!!!
Trust the other reviews. Drop whatever you have with this man, promotes his own writing which is literal non-sense. He talks around in circles and arrives at exactly nothing but towards a different starting point that is somehow the same. Which would be fine if it were philosophy based but it is not. DROP DROP DROP!
Expects a twenty page essay for a second year, three credit course. Lectures were like watching paint dry, if paint also talked the whole time in circles and didn't make any sense. Only uses his own writings as a textbook, which is pompous enough, but then when you actually read it, his writings are a bunch of nonsensical craziness.
this guy is terrible holy wow I actually couldn't believe it. I wish I read these reviews before I took a class with him. He literally rambles about nonsense in his lectures and looks at this nonsense straight from the syllabus "You must allow yourself 10-15 hours each week if you are going to succeed." for a 3 credit online course.....
One of the worst professors I've had in my academic year. He doesn't explain the course material well and usually bounces between conversations. I do not recommend having this professor at all!!
I have no words. I am basically teaching myself. I will say he is well knowledgeable about his field of study but thats it. He doesn't explain anything and in order to reach him it will take a long time for him to reply. He assigned an essay worth 40% of our grade and gave us ZERO information on what is required in the essay. Its disappointing
Ugh thats all I have to say
Don't. Just don't. I am the type who does not get scared off by bad reviews but this is the first time I regret it. Heed my warning (lol)
You must spend a lot of time reading not just the required textbook but readings he provides as well. This is the first semester of the online course due to covid. Each test was only worth 15% but it was as if you were studying for a test worth 40%. His exam paper is worth 45% with not much directions. This class should not be in 3000 range.
Worst prof ever. Save yourself the time and effort and DO NOT take any course taught by him. I'm an A student, his exams are extremely hard and barely relate to the lectures. You would think that he would be more accommodating and communicative because of the class being taught remotely, but no. Also, the TA is responsive unless it's important.
hes horrible. worst prof. bare readings that literally make no sense and expects us to spend 10-15 hours PER WEEK on a 3 credit course. hes so boring and monotone and doesnt teach anything. no instructions for his 40% paper. worse class and prof ive ever experienced. dont go for him
i should've listened to these reviews before taking this class. DO NOT take his classes unless you want to sit around listening to incredibly boring lectures in a monotone voice for 3 hours while learn absolutely nothing. tests are hard, paper is long with unclear grading. do yourself a favour and avoid him at all costs.
Prof seemed very rude and didn't care for his students especially mental health giving major assignments on breaks and making tests harder when averages were already low
This course was NOT easy, and the TA was rude at times... But besides that, I think I enjoyed the challenge. The readings gave lots to think about so you have to be willing to watch ALL lectures, attend office hours, and think deeply about the material to pass. The prof was always there to help and generously increased scores with the bell curve!
BELIEVE the 1 ratings. I'm not one to step away from a challenge but this course with this prof is NOT worth your time and money. The delivery of the content is unreasonably convoluted. Workload immense. Only 'W' on my transcript among A/A+ grades. Taking it now with another prof. Delivery and content is clear. Easily the right decision.
The worst prof at York U. Doesn't care about students. Makes us read his own research that isnt even related to the course. (legit every reading was something he wrote) We had a test with 18-20 short answer with only 40 mins to complete it. I got 3 A's and 3B+ this year and got a C in this class so obviously its not my study habits
I've had difficult profs in the past-- saw these reviews and figured I could handle him. I was so wrong. I have NEVER felt so discouraged during my entire uni career. He gives zero guidance and has such unrealistic expectations. I have an A average and I spent 25 hours a week outside of class on this course and you can see my grade. AVOID. AVOID.
Goel did a good job with his lectures- despite them being long in duration, he does a good job of explaining concepts. But he assigns ridiculously long readings- often, he would assign readings that were around 120 pages long EACH, which is unreasonable to expect from students.
Avoid this professor at all costs. His marking is arbitrary as he does not provide any sort of outlines for his assignments. The course revolves around his own textbook, that of which is so confusing and hard to follow that you have a better chance of understanding hieroglyphics or markings left by cavemen.
DO NOT TAKE. You use a textbook that he wrote that is unedited and very difficult to understand. You will do many presentations based on the info in the text (that is hard to comprehend) and he will interrupt you the entire time and tell you everything that you did wrong in front of the class. 0/10
GOEL IS A VERY BAD MENTOR. HE HAS INTRODUCED A NEW THEORY AND HAS HIS OWN BOOK IN PRESS RIGHT NOW.... WHICH HE EXPECTS HIS STUDENTS TO FULLY UNDERSTAND, PRESENT, AND WRITE A VERY LONG PAPER ON IT WORTH A LOT (W NO RUBRIC TOO). HE IS MANIPULATIVE, AND WILL SPEAK IN VERY DEMEANING WAYS TO HIS STUDENTS. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND AVOID HIM
Despite all the complaints and negative reviews about him, this prof hasn't changed a thing about the way he treats students. He's so rude and has unrealistic expectations for his courses. Nobody would want to be learning under this professor like this.
Never met such a rude prof w. so much ego& it's ironic cuz he wrote a book about rationality but lacks it in every domain. The entire course was us reading a book he wrote based on ONE theory that is HIS n he lacks writing skills cuz nobody really understood the book, it was jargon. Gave 3 presentations & 1 5K term paper which we had to rewrite.
I have never met such an awful professor, he even made the students do a presentation on his RMP reviews saying 100+ students calling him awful is "irrational" - if ur an awful educator accept it, but no amount of negative feedback will make this man change He is extremely rude, unreasonable, lacks empathy...should be fired n avoided at all costs
1 Term Paper (40% of grade), Discussion questions (2-7/week) (10% of grade), 2 tests (50% of grade). The test was said to be for 2.5 hrs but was only 85 minutes (1.4 hrs)!! Some questions were a paragraph long and we were only able to spend 45 secs per question!! Couldn't go back to a question. The term paper was 15 pgs double-spaced!! Bad prof
Awful professor and TA's. No clear outline for a 40% term paper, test was MC and short answer with 45 seconds given for each. Everyone in the class groupchat was extremely stressed and TA's gave different essay guidelines to different people. Course content could be interesting and enjoyable with another prof but NOT this one.
Prof Goel could be a good prof if he tried. We have a term paper worth 40% with no instructions given. The TA's are giving mixed responses which is very confusing. No clear outline at all for an assignment worth so much. I wish I could have dropped this course a long time ago but I'd rather not lose my money.
Honestly at this point it is my fault for taking this course The textbook is a book that he wrote on one theory If that does not spell arrogance I don't know what does He wanted us to understand the textbook and write a term paper only halfway through the course and the due date and exam were only 4 days apart which takes up 70% of the grade total.
40% 15 pg term paper same week as 30% test 1, textbook is his own book, speaks for itself
Crazy no one has a single good thing to say about this dude and many of you will still choose to take his class. Pls do your research yall LOL he's clearly a horrible prof so do yourself a favour and steer clear - otherwise, don't complain when you're having a bad time in the future with him.
Interesting subject but unfortunately this professor does a great job of making it so horrible. Avoid the course and him and save yourself unnecessary stress! This guy shouldn't be allowed to be a lecturer at any university.
Do NOT take cognition with this professor if you don't want unclear instructions, unclear grading criteria, TA's who have no idea what they're doing AND give out incorrect information, midterms with 120+ questions and 90 min to complete, and a paper thats 15 pages long worth 40% of your grade. Save yourself the time and effort :)
This man came to class 2 hours late. And then he decided to extend class time for 2 hours. Everyone was late for their following lectures. He doesn't even apologize for his actions. Very rude and not down to earth.
interesting course, not so great prof. does not actually teach or give back feedback. interrupts student presentations.
The theories are thought-provoking. Sometimes presentations may interrupted, only if the topic wasn't well prepared, or may be veering off course. The easiest marks come from participation. Engaging in discussion, keeping up with the material, and asking questions is the best way. Attend office hours if needed. With a little effort you can do well!
If you need any accommodations I would strongly suggest you don't take a course with Prof Goel. He wasn't at all understanding of student's genuine needs. The course was entirely based around his own book and theory, not an accurate representation of cognitive psych in general. Have had much better experiences with all my other profs at York.
Terrible delivery of course content. The required text was a book that he wrote, making all the information from the course come from a single source, and unfortunately, the concepts were very unclear. When attending office hours, he would provide additional or different information that was not provided in the assignment outline.
do it online please, THE EXAMS OH LORD...I'm still mad we only had 60 minutes to do 144 multiple choice questions that each had 5 possible answers. Which basically only gave us less than 25 seconds to read through each question that was at least 3 sentences long. !How would he expect us to do well without obviously cheating that was so unfair.
Claims doesn't know how to use eClass so he won't let students see grade breakdown. Most recent exam he enabled the re-attempt option, but when asked whether this was intended he said it was a mistake, removed the option when the timeframe for the online exam was practically over, and didn't announce his carelessness. No guidance, unapproachable.
Has no idea what he's doing. TAs are extremely unhelpful and never respond. Final paper neither of the 3 are on the same page, all having different criteria on what is being assessed when asked. Lectures are based off his personally written textbook, but when asked to explain concepts further he refuses saying it should be straightforward enough.
this class makes no sense, he did not release a SINGLE grade until after the finals, and he said in the same email ti not bother for extra credit. I wouldn't take him again, he never gave feedback.
The course is based in his own theory. He can't explain his own theory. Not a compelling introduction to cognition. His exams are cooked- no time. plus a 15-page essay. TA was rude and MIXED UP my grade with another student who FAILED their exam. I had to email them repeatedly to get it resolved. in the meantime I almost dropped. WORST PROF. AVOID!
