One of the best profs at uvic. Patient, knowledgeable and genuinely invested. Very fair balance between assignments and tests. Clear expectations and is always available to help.
I think Dr. Iosub is new to UVIC this year and we are so lucky to have her! Such a lovely person (w/ a wicked sense of humour!) and it is clear she respects and cares deeply for her students. She made herself very accessible to students and the class was always well-prepared for exams. Great experience, would love to take another class with her!
She is one of the best profs. She cares SO MUCH about her students and their success. She has an "open door" policy and is therefore always available for help. Group projects are quite challenging, but she is willing to help you on those too. Tests were hard, but if you studied hard, you could do really well.
One of the most caring professors at UVic. Teaches concepts clearly and provides in class exercises to help students grasp the material. Tests are similar to her provided worksheets.
A very good Organic Chem prof gave clear instructions and lectures and tons of practice material to make a difficult subject super manageable!
Violeta is one of the kindest professors at UVic. She makes an effort to get to know many of her 400+ students by name, which is such a small but appreciated gesture that many profs dont do. She is helpful, and will always make time to answer questions and make sure students are understanding and keeping up. Shes also very funny and personable!
Violeta was an amazing professor. I learned so much from her. This class was the easiest out of my courses, and I was pretty close to an A+, but I ran out of time on a midterm and the final. I also skipped a couple of the end lectures which were important. Make sure you manage your time well during exams, and go to all lectures. Use model kits.
Dr. Iosub is a lecturer that does seem to care about her students. This being said, she seems overwhelmed and disorganized. Her notes are not properly accessible online And she speeds through important material. Tests focus too much on 231 material. The final exam was horribly written, completely inconsistent with exams from previous years.
love her way
She's a fantastic professor, you can tell she really cares about her students. Her lectures were easy to follow and there was plenty of chances to practice concepts, and she was very helpful outside of class as well. The tests were fair (but make sure you practice ranking relative properties). She's got a good sense of humour as well.
She is a very approachable professor. Whenever I was stuck on a current assignment, I would email her (about 7pm) and she would email back just an hour or two later. She cares about her students and their performance. She always has extra practice resources available and I cannot wait to take another one of her class
Dr. Iosub is an excellent professor. She's able to make intimidating material (o-chem) very understandable. She's not an easy professor, but she's always there to answers questions after lecture and she's happy to help in office hours. Go to her office hours!!!
Violeta started off well but as we got deeper into material she left out important info that would be helpful for tests and assignments. I had to teach myself a lot of the stuff and when asked to do more examples she just said no and wanted us to complete them as practice without really showing us how to dot it. Frustrating and lots of hard work.
class material actually is not much difficult, but the lecture she made is useless and not clear. it is difficult to understand what she is talking about for speed out material, teach very unclear. Since without textbook that makes the class more difficult. some HW questions she event didnt teach or make it clear. THE Worst Pro I met in CHEMISTRY
Dr Iosub was amazing at responding to emails and guiding my reasoning in the right direction. She is a patient, caring teacher. Her lectures were engaging and easy to follow. My one problem was the last module which I felt she really rushed through despite it being a major exam topic. I think the course itself needed to be organized a bit better.
For anyone taking ochem I would highly recommend Dr. Iosub! She is super clear, extremely helpful, and very caring. I honestly never thought I would enjoy ochem nor do well as I had heard it is extremely tough. Dr. Iosub truly made me enjoy the class and my mark reflected that. I recommend going to her office hours as they are the key to success!
Iosub is an awesome lecturer, however the tests were significantly harder than material discussed in lecture. Also, her grading style is very specific, having the core information a question was asking, but minor details being missed resulted in a huge loss in marks on exams/assignments. Interesting material, but happy for this class to be over!
I personally enjoyed the layout the course as there was decent weight given for weekly assignments and quizzes which took the pressure of the midterms and final. However, we were behind in lectures that were required for the assignments. Lectures also leaves out certain information that is important to complete the assignment well.
Violeta puts in no effort to assist you if you cannot show up to office hours, and she is condescending to many students who ask questions. Good notes.
Dr. Iosub is an absolute legend! The two lecture booklets that she uses for chem 231 and 234 are terrific as she only teaches and tests from what is within them. Her tests are fairly straightforward and I never felt unprepared given all the additional resources she provides! One of the best UVIC professors I have had. Go to her office hours!
Violeta's lectures are engaging and easy to follow (as long as you ALWAYS show up to class - else you'll be lost). She always had time to answer questions after class and had excellent office hours availability. She really likes asking relative ranking questions on exams - practice those!!
Dr. Iosub is a really great professor! This course ran smoothly, but there was just no time to study for the final exam, which felt a bit unfair. I think she recognized that and will probably not do that again in the future.
UVic is so lucky to have Dr. Iosub! I needed this course as a pre-req and I ended up being so surprised at my performance on both midterms. A lot of concepts that I struggled with for years all seemed to come together for me in this course. Online office hours + tutorials were so helpful. I found her to be so kind and caring.
Dr. Iosub is a great prof! Her lectures are very informative so make sure to attend them. She is very clear with her explanations and super helpful during her office hours. I would definitely recommend taking classes that she teaches.
Iosub is amazing; she has one of those teaching styles in which you feel like you are not rushing, but you still get through a lot of material. Office hours are both zoom/in person, so you can still attend if sick. OChem is always hard, but she sets up her course so you get principles, not just memorized equations. Good setup for future chem
Easily my favourite professor ever. She makes it super easy for anyone to succeed in organic chemistry no matter your skill levels. She gives out tons of practice and has office hours multiple times a week and is very clear about what to expect on tests. Just truly a lovely lady. I recommend doing all the practice she provides.
Dr. Iosub is one of my favourite professors so far at uvic! She is so helpful and makes it easy to understand difficult concepts. She gave lots of practice material and tests always reflected what we learned. You could tell she really cared about the success of her students. I would love to take another class with her in the future!
great prof
I love Dr. Iosub, she is the most helpful caring prof. If you practice and study the material she gives for homework, turorial and lectures you can easily receive an A-B!
I love Violeta she is perfect, so funny, so nice and really helpful. Explains things well and grades fairly. Love the lecture book. Overall amazing professor
234 is the hardest class of my degree by far. Violeta is an okay teacher but expect to have to teach yourself most of the content. She just breezes over the simplest mechanisms and then expects you to understand extremely complex ones. This course I'm sure has caused many people to switch majors. It is unfair how difficult they make this course.
Violeta is amazing. Structured, clear, caring. Wants her students to succeed. She is a very fair prof and while it isn't an easy class, she makes it easy to succeed. Takes complex topics and breaks them down well
I love Violeta:) I have taken Chem 231, 234, and am taking 337 with her now. She is so caring, incredibly perfectly paced, and makes sure you understand what is being taught. I could not imagine ANY other prof teaching me organic chem. Further, Violeta is the reason I am now majoring in chem and pursing a career in organic chem, she is the best!
Dr. Iosub is one of my faves in the chem department. I missed a lot of online quiz deadlines due to sickness and urgencies and without question she always gave me an extension to complete it. She actually cares about her students success in her course. Replies to emails within a few hours. She's very funny too. Love her!
Lectures are explained poorly and unclear. Stopped going to classes because of her.
Stopped going to class for her section :'(
Violeta Iosub is amazing! She is so helpful and her office hours are the best. She loves to see her students succeed and is very encouraging and supportive, but also keeps it real and gives realistic feedback and strategies on how to improve. This course and its content was 100% better because she was teaching in a clear and step by step way.
Dr. Iosub is wonderful. OChem is a notoriously difficult course (this is no exception), but she makes it way less daunting. Her lectures are clear, engaging, and interesting and she was lovely when I asked for help outside of class. I wish exams didn't make up so much of the grade, as they're very challenging, but with effort the course is doable.
I love Violeta. I've had her for all my ochem courses. She is so lovely, teaches at a good pace, and cares about her students' success. I would say the poor reviews are not at all an accurate representation of this wonderful prof
Dr. Isoub made organic chemistry the most enjoyable class. I was nervous going into it, but ended up doing really well especially thanks to her. She is super caring and an amazing professor.
Iosub is witty and cares a ton. The lecture book is gold, ochem is a hard subject but she tries very hard. The quizzes are hard, bu designed to help you learn. Lots of practice problems and resources are made available, so if you put in the effort you can definitely succeed. I'd be excited to have her as a prof again.
Best prof at UVic.
By far one of my favorite profs, her office hours are super helpful. Class was hard but definitely doable, she makes it so much better
Nobody is more qualified to teach organic chemistry than Dr. Iosub. Shes the best. Go to class, do the practice problems/quizzes. Go to tutorials. You will succeed.
Prof. Iosub made organic chem a breeze. Lectures were well paced, great explanations, homework and assignments were helpful, and her exams were fair. She posts previous exams to study from and both midterms and finals were similar, so no surprises. I'd definitely take a class with her again.
She is one of my favourite profs at UVic, she teaches so well, and cares so deeply for her students. I would and have taken every class she offers here. I am sad I cant take any more of her courses
Dr. Iosub was wonderful. Her lectures are easy to follow and informative, the lecture book is extremely useful as well. All the review material she posts is very helpful, especially old exams. They were very useful in studying for the midterms and finals. Overall I would definitely recommend Dr. Iosub for organic chemistry!
Dr. Iosub is the best chemistry prof I've had to this point. She is clearly very passionate not only about chemistry but also about how her students learn. I struggled a lot in the first part of this class, so don't forget to buckle down and put in the work! Ochem isn't an easy class but she makes up for it 100%. Definitely attend office hours!!
Dr. Iosub is the best teacher I have encountered in the science department. She clearly values education and the art of teaching. It is important to go to lectures as each module builds on the previous on however practice problems and detailed solutions are provided as well as previous midterms and finals so there are no surprises on exams.
I hate chemistry but her lectures make me actually want to pay attention. She somehow makes it sound interesting and explains things very well.
Amazing. Before this class, Organic Chemistry was merely a mandatory course for me. I had no real expectations and only ever heard about how hard Ochem is. Now I'm highly considering pursuing chemistry, or at the very least, minoring in it.
She's the best teacher she makes things very clear and is good at going through content and problems. Content gets harder as you go so first midterm was easier than second. Quizzes were very helpful in learning the content. Final was hard and needed lots of studying as it was pretty heavily cumulative to make all the reagents for the synthesis.
SHE IS SO CONDESCENDING...Interesting material for a Chem major, but ridiculous workload for a 200-level, and marking is incredibly harsh. Avoid if at all possible!
Undoubtedly the worst professor i ever had at UVic. I got an A because of how hard I studied, not because of this "prof". I dont give her any credit for my success whatsoever. She derived questions that would never be used, and gave us no practice problems for exams. Don't even bother going through her slides, because its useless.
Learned absolutely nothing in this course. Save yourself the stress and do not take this class. It is evident she only cares about sharing her personal life rather than actually teaching.
This class was incredibly difficult to get through. Lots of errors in lectures, requiring lectures to be re-recorded and you had to watch them later (a second completely different 1+ hour lecture) to be able to get the correct info. Threatened to report students for harassment for asking simple questions, ignored emails. avoid if possible
I don't even know what to say about this prof except: no matter what other classes you are taking, this class will take 1x0 the amount of effort to get a good grade just because of this prof's complete inaccessibility, her lack of clarity about grades, and her dislike of helping students who are struggling.
I absolutely ADORED this prof and her incredible personality as a teacher and a person. Her sarcasm and jokes made the class most enjoyable and fun, and the room was full every single 8:30am class. I can honestly say I would not have passed this course if I hadn't had her extra support in review sessions and office hours (go to those!!!!)
This is my best professor ever! she's the best; she explains well inside and outside lectures, gives detailed feedback, and tells you where to improve. Her midterms and exams are very well organized. You can get above a 95% in this class if you are determined and engaged. She made classes very fun for me. Attend office hours, they helped a lot!
She was hard to reach, an extremely slow grader and in general absent. Don't ask her for help even if it says in the assignment to ask if you have questions as she will just tell you that she can't do anything. The class has the potential to be interesting and informative but is taught horribly. would avoid at all costs.
Violeta would not respond to any emails students would send. She provided very little instruction for exams/ assignments and would take MINIMUM 1 month to return marks. Lectures were dry and extremely unorganized. Gave us a review for midterm and nothing on the review was on the exam. I personally would not take a class from Violeta again.
Speaks in a very condescending manner, very challenging to have a conversation with. Seems unaware of how rude she is. VERY unhelpful to students with accessibility. Not a hard course itself, but she is impossible to interact with.
An amazing woman and an even more amazing teacher! Most fun I had in a class ever! The content is difficult and hefty; however, she has a brilliant ability of still successfully teaching difficult concepts with care.
Absent minded, unreasonable expectations, not accessible. Exams asked for answers which were only skimmed over and processes which were never discussed. Doesn't post classes nor student list so good luck getting notes if you miss class and don't miss too many or you'll literally fail. She's often late or missed class herself. Waste of credit.
I enjoyed Dr. Iosub's part of 231 and thought she explained the concepts very well. In fairness, she taught the “easier” part of the course but I never found myself confused in her lectures. I can't speak on office hours as I never went 😬 but her review session before the final was very helpful. The tests were completely fair as well.
Really unorganized, goes off topic a lot, and it took her almost 2 months to give our assignment and passed the date for voluntary withdrawal so it was hard to know where you stood in the class. Also like to often bring up her personal life which was just not needed in my opinion.
The class itself wasn't too bad but Iosub's teaching was borderline impossible to understand. She has no flow in her lectures and is very all over the place. I would say attend but honestly I found it pointless too when she was teaching. Use the textbook or online resources when you have her, it's the only thing that will help.
Dr. Iosub is an amazing teacher. Highly organized and engaging, clear explanations and expectations and many opportunities to engage with content which is essential to succeed. Do the practice questions, make an equation review sheet, re-do all quiz questions, complete all the practice tests multiple times and go to class you can do very well !
It was more of her attitude that ruined the class for me than the actual content. Test questions are very specific and some what ridiculous. She marks very hard and slides mostly are quotes from the textbook. I wouldn't say you need to attend lectures but definitely attend labs, you'll learn most of the material there.
One of the worst professor I had a class with, she doesn't care about teaching at all, she never replies to emails, and the worse part he treat students very condescendingly. Very tough I strongly suggest avoiding her as much as you can...she apparently used to teach at University of Calgary, but has since taken this job at UVic for more money.
Terrible prof, cant teach at all! Many mistakes in lecture and in tests. Notes were messy and disorganized. The only thing she is good at is weeding out students. Very cold hearted women. Avoid at all costs.
Not only is she the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of having a class with, but she also was able to score a spot among the worst people I have ever met. I would avoid taking a class with her like the plague, even if it means taking a course that she only teaches at a community college. It's sad there are people like this teaching.
Violeta Iosub is an arrogant professor. Has bad structure for introductory course. Learnt much more from YouTube videos than her classes. Waste of credit.
The new way of teaching math, how Iosub does it, does not work. But this is secondary to all the grading issues students encountered. I'm unsure how the university lets her keep teaching the largest OChem course at UVic. She needs to be sacked for how students were treated.
Had her for both 231 and 234, and I couldn't recommend her enough. She made orgo really fun and provided lots of resources to improve. She is also super funny so that makes the class feel less stressful. Even though orgo has a super bad rep, she made the class way more fun and I ended up enjoying it more than my other classes.
She might put those fake 5 stars for herself but people look on the amount of negative ratings vs positive. She will clearly kill your gpa in the second year. The weekly workload is high but she will gives you 0 for tiny mistakes like syntax error. Huge disappointment
Violeta doesn't know how to teach. Wastes so much time by giving useless assignments. For example an assignment worth around 5 percentage points where we need to answer around 20 questions and write a full report. Terrible, avoid at all costs!
Attending the tutorial helps more than attending class. Learn mostly by ourselves in a highly exercise-based textbook with going over 1 or 2 examples in lecture, again by ourselves as group activity. Definitions were rarely given, though tested often. Bad lecturing, teaches around 20% of the class time. Blames the students not working hard enough.
As a chem major, she's one of my favourite professors, and people at UVic. Had her throughout my whole undergrad and couldn't recommend her more. If you get the chance to attend office hours, they are super helpful. Wonderful person and even better prof.
The course was EXTREMELY unorganized. She posted the rubrics so late, so you would have to work blindly on the assignments until you finally DO receive the rubrics and realize that you spent too much time on the wrong things. Changes things up at the last minute. assignments are changing days before due. Tests were NOTHING like what we learned.
Terrible. I found she was definitely not open to students' interpretation of material; she is very closed-minded. Quite shallow and unclear, class is only somewhat educational, mostly a waste of time. The only upside is she sometimes lets class out early.
Here is my take as a visitor to the Chem department at UVIC. Violeta is not a great instructor as many of you agree. From my own personal experience, she is a horrible person. This is the part that students may not easily see in an instructor. Also, I noticed is that students are often harsher in evaluating female instructors than male instructors.
One of my favourite profs ever. Material is difficult but she makes it understandable. You have to go to lectures to understand and do a good amount of practice outside of class as lectures only cover easier problems. Difficult course but manageable until the last few weeks where I found the content became very confusing and rushed
Worst professor I have taken. Her lectures are worthless dont bother taking notes she goes WAY to fast. Her English is honestly terrible. Homework is difficult and practice quizzes, midterms, and final were also hard. She posted the answers but it didn't help because I couldn't find out how the professor solved the problems etc.
Get ready to teach yourself everything! She doesn't respond quickly, is condescending, and expects you to already know everything. Her tests almost never have anything to do with what she teaches. This class will drain you of your mental and emotional energy. Take anyone else!
Professor Iosub is an overrall decent professor despite her having 2 hours, she goes through her lectures and presentation like its a speedrun. It's as if her 100 slides presentation is an animated disney film. Please bring a 1TB recorder to listen because she oversimplifies the information in her lecture in a 2 hour lecture.
The class has a unique teaching style, but the professor doesn't provide much support. Studying independently and using external organic chemistry resources can help you cope. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
lots of ta's and even other instructors will tell you that they don't like her approach or how she treats others
very talkative but also very stuck up, she calls you out in class and expects you to remember exact things from past classes. if you don't interest her she won't bother to interact with you. she is a harsh grader, when you ask him for advice he gives little to nothing. It's already a hassle without this woman adding so much drama and stress.
I still have nightmares cuz of this class but I would spend a majority of my Sunday doing work for this class to the point where i couldn't enjoy it. On top of that, the rubrics and assignments were very unclear and the labs were overcomplicated. On top of that, the grading scale is very unforgiving and she wants low avgs.
Would enjoy this class more with a different professor. Felt like we were just shown slides and wrote a few words, no explanations, no reasoning, she didn't really ensure that we were following along with what she was teachingdidn't repeat questions for the rest of the class to hear. No clear expectations of us, had to teach the content to myself.
Unfortunately, her grading system and the amount of work to be done was very harsh. I had quite a bit of frustration with this class because of the amount of work expected to be done every week.
The professor, the course is horrible. No matter how much u know chemistry and love it, this course will make u question ur interest and ur ability, its gonna demotivate u and make u question ur life choices in a horrible way. The professor will just teach basic things in class and ask the most difficult questions in exams that were never taught.
You will need outside information in order to do the exams as she will not go over it in class. Luckily, the final exam is pretty much like the practice final, thank god. Also, all of her recorded lectures are useless. All you hear is mumbling from her with loud sniffing and coughing from students. Its like she put her recorder on a students desk.
2 quizzes every week, too much homework, and extra lab time. Disrespectful to students, overwhelmed, don't take this course.
worst midterm 2 ever
Funny humour, her section of 231 (second half) was harder than the first half. Midterm was pretty tough. Luckily there's a ton of resources to help, and she did her best to explain topics, just didn't come across perfectly every time.
I understand the frustration, this is a hard course! The latter half is definitely more difficult, and moves faster. A lot of your understanding will come from doing practice questions. I found Dr. Iosub really funny and enjoyable, though she can come off as harsh sometimes. I would recommend 50 minute lectures, the 90 minute ones can be rushed.
I stopped enjoying this class when she started teaching it. I'll cut her some slack since she does teach the harder part of the course. That being said, she seemed uninterested and annoyed to be teaching us. Luckily the lectures were recorded because sitting in that class filled me with rage. Tests were quite hard, but lots of past tests were given
Dr. Iosub is a fantastic professor for organic chem! She did teach the harder half of the course, and the 90 min lectures were very rushed and not well distributed for midterm coverage. I found going to her office hours extremely useful! She seems a bit scary but really I can tell she cares a lot about the students, and she likes kung fu panda so
