The lectures are boring and she moves painfully slow through the material. She does not appear to know everything she lectures on and is not the greatest at lecturing in general. Additionally, because she lectures so slowly, she will move around test dates and is unwilling to compromise when the new test date is very inconvenient for the students.
She does fill in the blank style notes so you could easily get them from someone else and not go to class. Occasionally does iClicker for extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory as long as you can get notes from someone. Lectures consist of her reading directly off the slides and begging to be respected. Tests come straight from notes.
Only reason I'm passing is because of her extra credit. Her lectures are painfully slow and boring. It's her first year at Clemson and she obviously is not used to teaching large classes. Does not seem to know much about what she is teaching.
Lectures are SO slow and boring. There's a ton of information. Its all fill in the blank powerpoints so she forces you to come to class this way. Pretty bad since class is dreadful. Wont even send you the blanks if you have an excused absence. Doesn't seem like she knows what shes doing. Stay away if you can.
Lectures are soooo boring. I would come in prepared to camp on instagram and twitter or be productive in another class during the lecture. I would attend class tho because she gives a decent amount of extra credit through iclicker which helps a lot. Tests are not too hard just make flashcards of the terms in the notes and youll be fine.
Probably one of the easiest biology classes I have taken at Clemson. I usually went to class and worked on other classes while filling in the blanks for the notes. Usually studied the night before the tests and I got A's on all of the tests. Doing the bare minimum will get you at least a B.
Not the best. Lectures are really boring and the tests have way more indepth questions than what she talks about. The class could have been a lot more fun and interesting. I wouldn't take her again. This class brought my GPA down a lot.
Dr. Abernathy is very good when working one-on-one, but has some difficulty when lecturing to a 300 person sized class. Attendance is extra credit and can take your grade up a whole letter. She is very knowledgable and passionate, but you do have to show her the same dedication and give her a chance in order to enjoy the class
Easiest science class taken as an undergraduate. Minimal amount of information presented and exams are directly from powerpoints. Attend class because she gives extra credit; 100% extra credit is a FULL letter grade. Class is very slow, but that means hardly any material is covered per class (makes it impossible to fall behind or be overwhelmed).
Wouldnt let me take an exam later in the day because a family emergency is not a legitimate excuse
She does have some difficulty maintaining a large class. People get loud and rude. The content in her lectures is very interesting, but she delivers it pretty deadpan. The exams (if you actually STUDY (flashcards are a must)) are really easy. Every question is straight from the slides. She's very sweet one-on-one, and it's a cool class.
I really enjoyed professor Abernathy's lectures, she even records them and uploads them to canvas! She gives class participations assignments where you can work with your peers to go back over the information. Her note outlines are very organized and help you when studying! Review sessions can be helpful, but you could miss them.
Loved her - so sweet! This was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Study straight off the slides and you'll be fine. Go to class b/c there is a lot of extra credit just for showing up. It's her first year here, so she doesn't seem 100% comfortable up in front of 300 people yet, but she began to get more confident as the semester progressed!
One of my favorite professors at Clemson. She is the sweetest lady and really loves teaching about ecology (she's a bird fanatic which makes class very entertaining). She was out for half the semester bc she had a baby but she was still involved in what was going on, answered any questions we had, and helped out. If you can take her, DO IT!
She is super nice. The lectures are really straightforward & if you study the slides, you will do well on the tests. Go to class b/c there are pop quizzes on canvas. The material isn't overly interesting, but if you can get past that, this class isn't too bad!! She also holds review sessions, which can be helpful.
Didnt round up my 89.3. Finished just 1 final exam question short of an A and she never replied to my emails. After going to this class every time and doing well on the final, she still ignored it.
Professor Abernathy gives great lectures and has very fair tests.
Tests counted for a lot BUT we got weekly quizzes on the lectures that helped. They were also open notes. She also did a HUGE extra credit when we all did bad on a test. Make sure you know every detail from the notes for the tests! Highly suggest quizlet. She does "Select all that apply" questions which are hard. Overall, accessible and nice.
Abernathy makes a very straightforward class. The material is dense with a lot of memorization. The tests are lockdown browser with camera on, which forces you to memorize a lot of species and species trees. Though the material is difficult, Abernathy is fair and never tests on anything that she didn't lecture on. I would take her class again!
This class was an easy A. All you have to do is fill out lecture powerpoints and memorize them. Test questions were based solely on memorizing and applying information from powerpoint. All test class averages were in the 85-89 range.
We were online so we had prerecorded lectures. Make sure to study notes! If you understand and memorize them, exams will be easy. There are weekly quizzes that will boost your grade so do NOT miss submitting them. This class is test heavy but she is very clear about what you do and do not need to know. She's very good at communicating weekly plans.
Dr. Abernathy is a really great teacher. She makes the information easy to understand and the expectations on homework assignments and exams is very straight forward. She is very passionate about this class which made it more interesting. If she's available, definitely take her class.
Loved Professor Abernathy. I had her for vert bio and behavioral ecology and loved both classes. Vertebrate bio is a hard course so you have to go to class and study but her exams are fair and all material comes from the powerpoints if you take good notes during class. Behavioral ecology was easier
The exams were quite hard & mostly applicationmake sure you keep up with the lecture notes. The weekly quizzes/hw assignments were easy grade boosters, so that was nice. She gave 3 extra credit discussion questions that were difficult, but would help boost your grade a lot
I took this class online during COVID, and I really enjoyed the way she structured the class online. The material was super interesting, and she broke up the notes into manageable videos. Quizzes and homework help boost your grade too. Unfortunately, the final is mandatory though.
Dr. Abernathy is very organized, and her lectures contain the exact material you will need for her tests. Although fascinating, her lectures are pretty dense and require memorization. As long as you stay caught up, you should be ok.
Behavioral Ecology was my favorite bio class! There is a LOT of material but if you complete the lectures and study guides you will be prepared. Exams and most quizzes are all multiple choice but exams use Lockdown + monitor. She does give some extra credit and gives two chances to take each quiz. Lectures are pre-recorded so it's flexible
Dr. Abernathy is a great professor!! The class is very test heavy and she does not allow students to look at previous exams. This was the one thing I disliked because I never knew what I got wrong on tests. Stay caught up on the lectures and you'll do just fine.
Material was very interesting and fun, but you do have to basically memorize the lecture guided notes to do well on the test. If you like vertebrate biology, it's pretty easy and fun. If not, you may struggle. The lab portion of the class was also super interesting (although I had to take it online)
Worst professor ever! I would give a negative rating if possible. She does not respond to emails until it is too late. She goes out of her way to discourage students. Lectures were very boring and does not seem to understand how to provide a nurturing learning environment. Please NEVER take her!
The professor herself is very enthusiastic and seems lovely, but this class, considering it's a 3000 level course, is entirely too dense. You are expected to know everything on the PowerPoints, and each PowerPoint is typically 30-40 slides. The material is interesting though and focus more on the anatomy of vertebrates and their phylogeny.
Class is stupid easy. Tests and quizzes are straight from the PPTs. Prof is useless. Dont expect sympathy from her. She makes sure to put on a callous facade to cover her insecurities bc she knows plenty of facts but over half the class is actually more intelligent.
I think that if Dr. Abernathy is going to show teachers how to use bio. stats in the classroom, then she needs to actually teach in a high school/ middle school. Her TA's do a lot of the grading and count off points for "suggestions." Large assignments with little grade return. She did make herself available for zoom meetings, which was helpful.
For a 3000 level class, she is not the best. 9/10 times a student would ask a question, she wouldn't know the answer. Lectures are incredibly boring and she pretty much reads straight from the powerpoint. Tests can be difficult if you aren't doing in depth studying.I definitely learned a lot though, and her weekly quizzes are a great grade booster.
Her Vert Bio class was well organized which really helped. Taught us everything we needed to know for exams in her lectures. What helped me get an A was just looking over the lecture slides multiple times before the exam. She's also very nice and considerate. Just make sure to giver her respect
Loving animals, I found the material incredibly bland. She has a system of mandatory note-taking. There are two midterms, one final. It is A LOT of material. In-class quizzes are given out almost weekly and cover the material you learned in class the same day. They are open-note but very stressful. You don't get tests back. A very odd class.
Professor Abernathy was nothing special in terms of professors. She was a nice lady and did a great job of teaching the class but you only are given two tests to show what you know of the material and I don't think that is necessarily fair. The tests aren't too bad but you do need to study for them in order to get at least a B or higher.
Her exams are all memorization from the lecture PowerPoints, which is a tonnn of information that is super hard to memorize and grasp onto.
This was not only the most boring class I have ever taken but also the most difficult. She did very little to help her students and her tests were on a ridiculous amount of information. I would rather do most things than study for another one of her tests. Do not take this course if at all possible.
Professor Abernathy makes this class very difficult. Her exams have very specific content on them. She insists that you know every piece of information that is on the notes which range anywhere from 80-120 slides, and she tests you on all of that information.Overall do not recommend taking unless you are willing to put in a lot of work for the class
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken at Clemson. Your grade is dependent on only exams and quizzes. You have to memorize every slide in the powerpoints in order to do well on the exams, which can range from 80-150 slides. The exams are mostly select all that apply so you have to know everything from the powerpoints.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO GET AN A! RMP seemed very promising.Lecture consists of reading verbatim off of slides but you have to be in class every day listening to get a more generalized understand other than just words on a PowerPoint. Tests are all memorization, study guides helped. Required to memorize all names. Need to study daily!
Not sure why so many of these reviews are so harsh. If you actually enjoy learning about the anatomy/evolution of vertebrates it's a great class. There is a lot of info on exams, but if you stay on pace and get the study guides down it's very doable to at least get a B. Quizzes and a little bit of ec also (should) help your grade.
Professor Abernathy is really not bad at all. She expects you to know the material. Her lectures can get boring but the content isn't hard. All I did was fill out the study guides and granted they are very long but I never made anything below a 97 with that study strategy. I remember everyone else complaining but she tells you what's on the test.
Be ready to type every second and fall behind if you miss one day. You will get a 50-60 on the first test, even honors students do. Advanced knowledge of species names and synapomorphies. Quizzes are open note (but don't help much), tests require you to know 120+ Powerpoint slides and complex scenarios. (Teacher is fine, class is very hard.)
Dr. Abernathy expects you to remember a lot of material, almost word for word. Many exam questions are select all that apply questions, so if you don't know each fact then you wont do well. Expects memorization of specific species name in scientific format. Class was super difficult with loads of material, however she does tell you what to know.
Pretty mediocre professor. She only reads from slides, and you have to follow along and fill in blanks in the notes. However, she is very passionate about the subject, and the class structure is pretty simple. Only graded on lectures and quizzes, but she gives extra credit that helps quite a bit. VERY MEMORIZATION HEAVY!!!
Memorization-heavy class!! It was a boring lecture as she just reads off the slides. Tests aren't too difficult if you are good at memorization; it's just a LOT of material. Wouldn't take her again based on the amount of outside studying I had to do (way more than other courses), but kind of an interesting class for sure.
This class is definitely very challenging and is only graded on quizzes and exams. There is a ton of material on each exam and you need to know the tiniest of details because she asks a lot of select all that apply and dropdowns. Still, I'd take her again and focus on studying better because I don't think I was prepared.
Enormous amount of material. Class is 75% evolution. Don't need book. Fast-paced lecture. Graded by tests (hard) and quizzes (easy 100s). I found it hard to stay engaged during the lectures. She scheduled the third test for the Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving break to "give us more time to study." I made a 93 overall and still would not recommend it.
Dr. Abernathy was a great professor in my opinion! Lectures are heavy with lots of material but the tests are based off of memorization from the powerpoint slides you go over in class. She also offers extra credit that helps boost your overall grade a few points! She offers office hours to review your exams and go over what you missed.
Dr. Abernathy was a good professor, just had too much material to cover in one semester. I think the grading was fair and the lectures were easy to understand. She also posts the lectures online after class!
Abernathy was a decent professor. Really just read off the slides and made class very boring and hard to attend. I've been a pretty solid A student and ended with a B in the class just because it is so much sheer memorization. You WILL be expected to memorize cladograms upon cladograms of information that is incredibly foreign.
Abernathy seems like a genuine person but as a teacher she is so monotone and boring, unless you are really into dinosaurs or birds. She reads off the powerpoints continuously and doesn't make lecture interesting. You have to memorize SO much information for each exam, it seemed almost impossible and it's all in such minute detail.
You cover a lot of material in a short amount of time but that is just how the class is. The key is memorization, if you can do that you will do well. Her exams are just regurgitation of info so memorize it. She gives helpful study guides and no homework except a quiz every 2 weeks that you get multiple attempts on.
Dr. Abernathy is very knowledgable about what she is teaching. The class was just difficult because of the amount of material in each unit. The exams are pretty difficult, so I recommend basically studying every word of the class powerpoints. Her exam questions are detailed and require that you know everything discussed in lecture.
DO NOT TAKE VIRGINIA ABERNATHY, I AM TRYING TO SAVE YOU! I took her for 3030, now I have her for 3700. The sheer amount of content in both classes is disgusting, no other class compares. She also does not replace lowest exams. Reads slides. She is nice, sweet, totally, but what correlation does that have to success in her class? None whatsoever.
This class was an insane amount of content, but the material itself wasn't awful. Dr. Abernathy is not an approachable person at all, she doesn't let you see what you missed on exams unless you make an appt, and she can't answer half the questions asked in class. Exams are SO long, and half the time I don't have time to finish them. DONT recommend.
While clearly knowledgeable on her subject, Dr. Abernathy struggles to make the course material engaging or interesting. The course material itself wasnt particularly difficult, but the exams required a lot of prep. The study guides werent very helpful. Most of the semester the workload was relatively light, but a lot of work was crammed at the end
Dr. Abernathy was a pretty decent professor and used the powerpoints as the main focus for material. This class is lecture heavy with a lot of material but getting an A is doable if you make Quizlets or study the powerpoints in some way. Although there was a lot of material, I found it to be very interesting! Just stay on top of studying!
She is a good professor as long as you do your part. I succeeded in the class by staying on top of her lectures and using the resources she gave!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. listen to the rate my professors. its so test heavy.
there is so much material to study. do not take this class unless you love animals because that is the whole class, and it is so much infomration.
This was a top 3 hardest class i've ever taken. Requires memorizing every word on about 150 powerpoint slides for each exam. I would not recommend taking this class.
She is kind but not that helpful when it comes to helping you do better on exams. I only did well because I self-taught and memorized the ~150 slides. My advice is to memorize the cladograms and watch the lecture videos since she sometimes tells you what questions she will ask. The final is cumulative so make sure you are on top of the notes!
Nice professor, she seems very knowledgeable and I enjoy her lectures. However, the class itself isn't great because you have to memorize so much information. There also isn't any final replacement. If you miss the lecture and didn't watch the video you HAVE to get notes from someone because she doesn't post answers for notes.
this class is HORRIBLE. slides are ok, BUT the amount of information to know is actually UNHEARD OF. also said the cumulative final would only be on a few things from each of the previous units, but no, the study guide goes through almost every little specific, along with a whole new unit to memorize. in total its around 750 slides word 4 word. :((
horrible is the only word to describe this class.
TAKE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING BUT THIS CLASS!! This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken at Clemson. It honestly baffles me that this woman has a PhD. The amount of content that you are expected to know is ungodly in this class. Her exams are extremely specific and the final is cumulative (500+ slides). Currently praying I even pass....
This was probably the worst class I have ever taken here at Clemson. Also, it doesn't help that the professor is a joke. TAKE ANYTHING ELSE BUT THIS CLASS
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS AND ORGO AT THE SAME TIME. Test weeks/final days overlap. I took the honors section. You have to make a poster and a few other assignments. Absurd amount of memorization overall; if you do take her class, fill out the study guides. No dropped exams/replacements, test questions are application-based (somehow)
Nice lady, but exams are so difficult and application-based for whatever reason. Very difficult to get a hold of via email, no videos to catch up on notes if you miss a day. Devastated bc I had a good grade, which was shot down like a racehorse with a broken leg, and the shotgun was her final exam. Memorize the cladograms, they're super helpful.
This class was way more difficult than I expected. The exams are extremely detailed and cover an insane amount of content. The final was genuinely obnoxious and weighted more than other exams. If you memorize the cladograms, you can get an A. The only positive is the extra credit. Overall, I would not recommend taking Dr. Abernathy's class.
this is the worst class i have ever taken. this is the worst teacher that i have ever had. her exams for this course are the worst tests i have EVER experienced. they ask very specific questions, and are not even direct, but must be applied. crazy. be scared.
While Dr. Abernathy is a kind person, her class was simply overwhelming in the sheer amount of content that was expected of students to know. The class grade is almost entirely comprised of exams, none of which are dropped/replaced with the final, which is cumulative. Pretty rough class with way too much info to memorize per unit/exam.
Dr Abernathy is a good lecturer, and the course takes on loads of content for each of the two exams and cumulative final. The info isn't hard but is just a lot and questions on exams may not be super clear if you don't know the content well. If you go to class and study on your own at least a little you'll be fine.
I love Dr. A! I took her 8450 course for the online M.S. program. Canvas page and course materials were very detailed and well-organized. Expectations were well communicated, workload was easy to maintain even while working full time. Especially enjoyed the Amazing Animal features. Dr. A is obviously passionate about what she teaches!
horrible professor. such a hard class and tests were very difficult due to the insane amount of information. it was hard to bring a grade up after not doing well on one exam. very hard class, i do not recommend at all.
Decent professor, notes are fill-in-the-blank, which helps. In-class activities are mandatory in person, but normal class and outside-of-class activities aren't. Tests are hard, cover so much material, and there are only three exams. The final has 68 questions, so be ready to study and pay attention. Lots of information, but easy to understand.
if you have to take her you'll be fine if you stay on top of lectures. her final SUCKS and i mean SUCKS just bc it's all of the last unit & everything you covered thru the semester. however she did give my class over 12 extra credit points over the semester so def take advantage. overall would not want to take this class again.
i do not recommend at all. not a good professor and her exams and material covered is extremely difficult. so just no.
I honestly would not take this class unless you are genuinely interested in the topic. The test covers so much material that it is hard to take it alongside other classes. If you are not curious in anything in this course and just looking for the credits, DON'T TAKE IT, it's not worth the amount of studying and time.
There is a lot of information, I've yet to take the final, but I've heard it's hard. I had to study a week ahead for each exam to get an A, but I feel like that's normal difficulty in a college class. You've just got to put a lot of work in but its not THAT bad if you're a hard worker.
Don't get me wrong, her lectures are great. The main issue is the class structure: no dropped exams, overlapping test dates with orgo, and a cumulative final. If you study well in advance, it's an easy A, but I ain't doing all that. Still, the class is very interesting if you're into vertebrates.
There is so much content within this class, but its purely memorization. If you figure out the way she tests you'll be fine. Super nice lady, but really boring class if not interested in vertebrates. Also does give points back on exams, two chances for quizzes, and very detailed study guides.
She is a nice person but an awful teacher. 1 section available at 11am, in the middle of your day. The material is a lot and she lectures the entire time. Her exams are hard and detail oriented. The class itself is interesting and is a better option than plant or insect bio I think. Just review a little after each lecture and you will get an A
Dr Abernathy is nice lady but her exams are AWFUL. I studied for two weeks for one of them and could never manage an A. I would not recommend taking this class if you don't have to.
Lectures are super long and tests are difficult to study for since you literally need to know everything. If you genuinely have ADHD this class is your worst nightmare. If you're a pre vet/environmental science major I recommend taking it and pushing through the difficulty of this class but if you're premed, absolutely not take anything else.
Do NOT take this class. I studied two weeks in advance, and it still wasn't enough. Met with her, and all she could recommend was studying three weeks early. Tests have sooo much content—one study guide took me three days, and you literally have to know every single thing on it. Overall, a terrible experience unless you really care abt verts.
She is a nice person but such a boring and difficult class. She kinda just reads off the slides like you could distill each one of her lectures down to 15 minutes of content. The lab was honestly the most helpful to learn content.
This class is A LOT of work ngl studying in advance and active recall while studying will be the best thing. Interesting info but she reads everything so fast in class you can't learn much. I just watched the zooms and sped through to fill in her fill in the blank notes. Gives 15 point of extra credit for assignments and points back on exams
Before taking this class the reviews on this website scared me, so I wanted to write one to decrease incoming students' worries. There is an amazing amount of extra credit given in this course. I never got an A on a single test (got 2 Bs, 2 Cs) & was able to finish with an A overall just bc of all the extra credit and points back on tests.
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE FIRST EXAM. Even if you've always felt like you've been good at bio. I did not do good on the first exam and it's the only reason I don't have an A. You need to memorize the summary cladogram for each exam and make a quizlet from basically every word on all the notes. I did those the night before for exams 2-4 and did well.
Honestly, I really enjoyed her vert bio class. No slander #freeher. The first test is hardest and is very fish group heavy. Her class isn't the most fun but if you stay engaged and attend the classes, it's easier to recall the information. She gives tons of extra credit back on exams and in quizzes. I got 84s on all my exams and still earned an A
Her lectures can be a drag to sit through because it's a lot of information all at once, but just make sure you know the cladograms. Also, the review sessions she holds right before exams are so helpful
