FYI for all CMN students - her former name was Creveling, Virginia, so you can look there to find more reviews... She's a lively lecturer, just keep up and study and you'll be fine. She's also the faculty sponsor for internships.
Great lecturer. Has all her notes layed out in a notebook making it easy to go back and study. If you must take a class at 8 in the morning, her stories and teaching style will keep you awake.
This class is fun! Attend class. Do the study guide and you will be set for the exams. All exams are multiple choice and is straight forward. Hamilton is an awesome professor. Sometimes the class gets long, but her stories are interesting. Take as many classes with her as possible! You won't regret it!
she is awesome~ i am a bio major but she makes me want to change my major to cmn~ just pay attention in her INTERESTING class, follow the study guide and you will be fine~ A is not hard in her class
A great professor! Really willing to work with her students and enjoys getting to know them on a more personal level. Go to class and office hours and get to know her, she really wants you to do well!
Best professor/class I've taken in a while. Makes class interesting with funny stories and anecdotes. Best class is when she reviews the male/female differences in nonverbal behavior. Wait and see. Grade is based on 3 exams; questions are straight from the study guide. Take good notes in lecture; majority of questions are from there. Popular class
Easy A. You don't really have to read or go to lecture. Exams are a piece of cake. She is interesting, entertaining and funny, BUT I didn't really learn that much. Class is very much based on common sense and stereotypes which is unfortunate and misleading. She taught me what I already knew. Don't waste your time. Could've been better.
Group Therapy!
She redefines the idea of taking notes in a stupid way: filling in the blanks in her own course notes. She makes students memorize 100 definitions for her multiple choice exams, effectively treating them as monkeys. The book she assigns is no better: it's full of cliches and unproven ideologies.
Hilarous and entertaining class. You will want to go to class. If you are in a relationship, this class will explain every mystery that is going on in your relationship and teach you how to better communicate with youre boyfriend/girlfriend. If not, its still very interesting but not quite as captivating. Love her real life examples.
Very enthusiastic professor. She told jokes, stories, and her notes were very simple as all you had to do was fill in the blanks. Her exams were easy as long as you study from the book AND her notes. She even tells you where to find the answers in the books. There is a lot of info though. There is also a paper, but that is not too hard.
"Textbooks" are short paperbacks, in-depth analyses semantic and pragmatic uses of language. Hayakawa text is written in conversational style. Hamilton is engaging and funny, very approachable. Provides pre-typed notes-book from Davis Copy Shop. Multiple-choice exams draw questions directly from study guides and books.
All she does is lecture and create the 2 50? MC midterm/final tests; the TA's do all the work and grading. There are several papers you need to write (essentially one a week) but they are easy and 1-2 pages. Lecture isn't mandatory, just get a buddy so you can copy their fill-in-the-blank notes. Do the papers, study for the MT/F and receive an A.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER!!!! She is so funny and entertaining...its hard to ever be bored in her class. You definitely learn the material because she presents it in such a comical fashion. Highly recommended!!!!
Great professor! She uses examples from her life to explain concepts so it makes remembering them really easy. Her lectures are clear and to the point but discussion sections are kinda pointless. Interesting class and you'll definitely learn a lot about how you communicate with others. Great class overall!
GREAT class. One of the most useful classes for after college. She is very knowledgeable about the business world and how it works, and has lots of stories to explain the class concepts. Tests are MC but not terrible, they follow the study guide almost exactly.
This is an extremely useful class for college and life in general. She uses examples from her personal life which are funny to relate to the text. Exams are MC and very straightforward. Great class and prof!
She's great. Interesting and fun. Just answer the questions for the textbook you don't have to read it. She use funny examples that makes you remember the terms. Since the class does very well, there is no curve so watch out.
This class is a guaranteed B and an A with a little more effort. It's an interesting class that relates to everyone. Overall it's an easy, interesting class.
She's awesome. Loved her. She was my favorite professor for this quarter and a Cmn. major told me she was his favorite professor on campus.
She's not as easy as most people said. Don't go in with a mind-set of an easy A. Her test questions were a little tricky. Other than that she does a great job with giving examples from her life that really help memorizing things. Also, she's reeeaallllyyyy nice to look at.
if you follow the study guide you are bound to get an A. very funny and knowledgeable.
Easiest Class at Davis. No need to attend class, almost impossible not to get 100% on HW grade, midterm and final very easy- just study the lecture handout and textbook study guide. The exam follows verbatim what is on the study guide and lecture notes. She is very kind and lecture is somewhat entertaining. Good class.
Two words: Easy A. As long as you take her fill-in-the-blank lecture notes, go to section, crank out the papers an hour before class, *READ THE BOOK*, and make a conscious effort to fill out the study guides, it will be a challenge to get anything less than an A. Plus, Hamilton presents the material in very entertaining ways.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Hamilton's class. Notesbook was a must: had lecture notes and study guides. Assignments were easy and mostly personal. Midterm and final followed study guides verbatim. Entertaining class and easily applicable to everyday life. Professor Hamilton was also very considerate and knowledgeable. Great professor and class!
This class is useful for post graduation. I would take it as a junior or senior. Viginia is awesome and makes the lectures interesting. She likes to tell tons of stories and really opens up to the class. One of the better lecturers at davis!
She is a great teacher! I have taken two courses with her in my last quarter. She likes to tell stories as examples from the course materials. She is very friendly and good looking woman. If you study from her study guide then you should definitely pass her class. Most students pass her classes. Someone must be really lazy to fail her classes.
This class is fail proof. Professor Hamilton is knowledgeable, funny, a great lecturer and pretty to boot (she's 51 now I believe). She takes the best out 3 of 4 exams and offers 2 points of extra credit. Course material is fun and really makes you think about real life applications. Honestly, whether it be for fun or your major, take her!
she is an amazing professor. 3 midterms and an optional final. you can retake any of the midterms again instead of the final. she loves what she teaches, and makes class fun. fill out the lecture notes and do the textbook questions and you will get an A. take her if you can.
Her class was my favorite last quarter. Lectures are entertaining and extremely clear, which makes 2 hour lecture bearable. I want to take as many classes from her as possible before graduating.
She's easy. ;] Ok, but no really, her study guides are helpful and she tailors the material in a way that's very relevant. I've taken all the classes she's offered and wish I could take her for other Cmn courses.
This is the best professor ever ! She is passionate and knowledgeable and really cares for her students. Her class is easy and super helpful at the same time. I got an A and learn a lot. Her stories are all relevant but some people may not like it. Finally, her personal love tangle in the department is extremely funny;take her and u will understand
She is an outstanding lecturer. I wish she taught more classes! The grade consists of the highest 3 tests out of 4 tests. I highly recommend taking her class. She is very helpful in her office hours.
She is awesome! I really love her real life stories, they keep u awake during class times!
She is one the best lecturers at UCD. Her material is so relevant to the field and to people's real live that learning is actually a pleasure. She is approachable and a fair grader and as long as you attend class and do the study guides you are guaranteed a good grade. Class participation is really not required.
She is honestly one of the best communication professors I had in Davis. Also, this is the only class that I know I will be able to apply to the future after I graduate!
Virginia is amazing!!! She is so passionate about what she lectures about and is extremely helpful in connecting the material to real-life situations. This class should be mandatory for all seniors in its usefulness in every aspect of one's career. She is a great communicator, funny, inspirational and knowledgeable. Take her class!
Best teacher at this school. Period. Thanks for single-handedly making life at Davis awesome.
Very easy class. I crammed a couple of hours before exams and averaged A- on the 2 Midterms/Final. Homework was easy to do, and presentations were also easy for discussion. Not mandatory to go to lecture since all of her notes are online. Discussion is mandatory but we always got out early. Recommended if you want an easy A.
Virginia is a great lecturer! She makes class very entertaining and keeps the class engaged. The midterms are multiple choice and straight from lecture. The final is from the Motely textbook and she provides a study guide. Plus two group presentations and two homework assignments. All in all this is an easy and entertaining class!
Professor Hamilton is awesome. She genuinely cares for her students, is very easy to talk to, and very understanding. The only downside with her class is she doesn't really give any incentive to go to class. I wish she would make the class a little more challenging so students felt like there was more of a purpose in attending lecture.
One of the best lecturers I have had. Very entertaining to go to class just to hear her personal anecdotes. This is not even my major but I will try to take her upper division classes.
Extremely easy class but fairly hard to get an A. Designed for lazy seniors it seems. Do something and you get a C.
Amazing teacher and amazing class. I am not a comm major and I took this class and loved it. Would highly recommend for ALL majors!!
one of my favorite professors! she cares so much about the class and her students. Lecture is entertaining, discussion, hw and presentations are super easy. one of the best classes ive taken so far.
Very easy class to the point that it is a waste of time. Obvious material, obvious examples, obvious exams. I'd rather learn something and take a class that is at least slightly challenging. If you are lazy and want to get an A without effort and without learning, then this is the class for you! Take this class from someone else, if possible.
Awesome professor! Clear, concise voice, with applicable stories and videos to lecture. I've had several upper division classes with her. The material is fairly easy, but some questions can be tricky with wording on multiple choice. Class averages are B's, but I find it a bit difficult to get a solid A (need 94%+) in her upper div classes.
CMN 003 interpersonal communication is a very interesting class because Ms.Hamilton makes the class fun, interesting and clear. There is a presentation, but its a group one and its easy and fun! I recommend this class for students that need to fulfill GE requirements, boost up GPA, and engineers are welcome to take CMN 003 (if optional).
Boring lectures, ending up not going. Hard to get an A in the class, but easy to get a B. Discussion was mandatory. Easy class in general.
This class only consists of three 50 point tests. Our class had wonderful students that created Google Docs for the study guides. Studying off of the docs was insanely helpful. Really put effort into the first midterm, it's the hardest one. Second midterm is pretty easy and the final is okay. Hamilton is hilarious, I loved her lectures.
Great lecturer. I pass/failed this class but was glad I took it because teaches some things that are useful post-graduation and is also very entertaining (and uses different stories than CMN 003). The fact that all grading is from MC tests makes it tough to pull an A, but she does offer some extra credit. She is also a genuinely nice person.
Class is straightforward because of the fill in the blank style notes. She also gives notes online. Midterms are easy to get B's, hard to get A's. Tests are not too tricky if you take the time to study, but are the main bulk of class. I thought the final was the easiest (not cumulative). Sections are mandatory but easy to get 100% in.
Virginia is a wonderful professor and is also a genuine, wonderful person. Her lectures are a little dry sometimes, but for the most part they are entertaining and relatable because of the stories from her own life she applies to the lectures. I highly recommend you take her classes whether you are a Comm. major or not :)
Virginia is fantastic, she's full of humor and energy. She really takes the time to help and get to know her students. Many people slake off in this class because it's a supposedly "easy" A. It is, as long as you do the study guides and readings. Also don't buy the books you only use them a couple of times for exams and hw, use library reserves.
Best teacher at UCD! Love her gossips and how she relates them to lectures! I love her she is so funny, empathetic about student's needs! Always allowed me to reschedule my midterms! Study guides are on point with the tests! She is amazing and I learn a lot! UCD professors better take note!
A Round of Applause goes to Professor Hamilton. She is the most dedicated and devoted professor I have ever had. She makes the subject matter easy and enjoyable. If you are able to have her as your instructor then count your blessings because this woman is nothing short of spectacular.
I am so glad I have Virginia as a professor!. Her lectures were fun because she's so enthusiastic and relates the subject matter to her funny life experiences. I went into her office hours and felt like I was talking to a friend. She truly cares about her students and she sets up the class so the vast majority of people will get As and Bs.
Such an awesome professor! CMN 136 was the first class I've taken at UCD in 3 years that I felt I could truly apply to life. Professor Hamilton is enthusiastic and makes the subject matter relatable and interesting with her anecdotes. I was lucky enough to have her for CMN 3 and CMN 136. Definitely take 136 with her! You won't regret it.
She's a really good lecturer and is very engaging! She can get a little into her stories sometimes, but overall it's a really fun class! You definitely MUST go to lecture. Her study guides are exactly like her tests, so if you go to lecture and do her study guides, you're golden.
Taken 3 classes with Hamilton. She's hilarious and cares. But don't skip, study guides are based off of lecture. Review days are super helpful too.
prof hamilton tells a lot of funny stories during lecture and gives good examples that do not show up in the slides, so lectures are helpful but not mandatory. the discussions are all group activities and the tests are straightforward
This has been one of my favorite CMN courses by far. Her lectures are funny, relevant, and easy to understand. As long as you thoroughly fill out and memorize the study guide you should be golden for her exams. She's also kind enough to give answers to the textbook study guide which really helps. Overall, easy A and very enjoyable!
Virginia is the best professor I have probably ever had! She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I enjoyed going to class and we always got let out early. I filled out and memorized the study guides, which made the exams a lot easier. The book is interesting too and she makes class hilarious and fun. Love her stories!
Professor Hamilton's class is a lot of fun to take. She is a really good lecturer and fills each lecture with hilarious anecdotes from her personal life as examples to the concepts. For tests, she gives you a study guide that is extremely clear about what you should know. If you study the study guide, the class is an easy B if not an A.
Hamilton is the best. She is super cool and understand her students well and can really sympathize with them. Her lectures are hilarious (filled with personal anecdotes) but optional, yet it would be a crime to miss them. Group work in discussion which was super easy and tests were a piece of cake. Study the study guide and you can easily get 100%.
A fantastic teacher. Each class was like attending a personal life development seminar, filled with examples from her interesting personal life. We watched movies that demonstrated good leadership. Very little work involved and easy to be engaged.
This class was not very educational because we learned more about the professor's personal life than the actual class material. The exams are based on her powerpoints and the textbook, but they are written in a tricky way. She is not really generous when it comes to extra credit either- only 2 points are possible, which realistically is unhelpful.
Hands down, best teacher at Davis. Not to mention she is HILARIOUS. She made me cry laughing once in class. She is one of the best lecturers I've had at Davis. Someone mentioned that we learn a lot about her personal life? Yea, because she gives REAL LIFE EXAMPLES to help us understand material. Tests are straight to the point and easy if you study
Boring for me but mandatory. Confusing test. Good person. Easy B but meaningless.
Virginia is great! Her class is easy and her lectures are awesome! I definitely recommend this class for an SS GE. There is one group project, but it is not difficult. The textbook is needed for the final. If you want an A all you have to do is memorize her lecture slides and take notes during class. For the final memorize the study guide.
She makes this class harder every quarter. If you want an A, memorize everything on her lecture slides. Most people end up with a B and she only gives 2 points of extra credit, which means nothing. All the points come from test and a presentation, but she doesn't curve. Good for a GE though.
If you study off the study guide and know it well, it's a pretty easy class. However, her exams have questions related to what she said in lecture. This makes it a bit tougher to do well since you can't really miss too many points to get a solid A in the class. She's a good lecturer though.
I went into this class thinking it would be really easy. I think she has made it harder over the last few quarters. It's definitely an easy B but you do have to work for an A. She doesn't podcast so it's important to go to most of the lectures. 2 midterms, a final, and a group presentation+discussion attendance.
Not my favorite professor, but the class had easy and interesting material.
One of those GE classes that you can't miss many questions for an A. Easy B, you'll have to memorize EVERYTHING for an A. You likely won't get a perfect on the project. Hilarious and great at lecturing. Go to lecture, she pulls questions from lecture and every point matters. You won't know the answer unless you heard it at lecture, no podcast.
I am adding a CMN minor because of her, and i really wish i took her class earlier & switched my major to CMN instead of psychology. lol. She's hilarious, and her stories & anecdotes help you remember the information you learn. CMN 3 is a MUST TAKE here at UCD. I wish she could be my mom. That's how cool she is.
Very good lecturer. I didn't end up going to many of the lectures because they were two hours long but the ones I did go to were very enjoyable. Tests are very straightforward, she gives you a study guide ahead of time so you know exactly what will be on the test. Two midterms, one final. Also, Prof. Hamilton, if you're reading this, what up.
I took 3 and 136 last quarter and loved her! She is so funny and tells great stories. She uses very relateable information to teach the material. The books are definitely needed to do well on the tests since there is a separate section where she tests purely on the textbook. I would highly recommend taking her classes!
Two midterms and a final. Interesting lectures but can talk about herself a lot. You do have to study for the exams as they can be tricky. Definitely not an easy A class unless business is your absolute interest.
She's funny and makes the lectures as relatable and interesting as possible. She says specific things in lecture that are not in the book that are on the tests. Her tests are not really "tricky" but you need to know the material really well since there are a lot of lists and a lot of the answers make sense but only one is really correct.
This class was so chill. Only 1 lecture and discussion. It is a bit harder to get an A since there is so much to memorize. Virginia is knowledgeable about the subject but this was Virginia's last quarter teaching cmn 3. Would take her again
Hamilton is the best! She truly cares about student success and will give you a study guide with EVERYTHING you need to know. Go to class because she shows movies that show up on exams. Plus she's hilarious and always has personal stories to share that are very entertaining. My fav professor. Take her if you can!
Hamilton is the absolute best. If you have the chance to take her, do it! Her lectures fly by and are full of great stories that are relevant to what is being learned. Her final is based entirely on the book. This sounds hard, but she gives a study guide that is exactly what you need to know. I got a high B on the final without even buying the book
So glad I decided to take SS1 with Hamilton. She is such a great speaker, she made summer school feel less like class and so much more enjoyable. She helps students out with a reader instead of a textbook and with extra credit options. Wish I had more time left at UCD to take more of her classes! Definitely recommend.
AMAZING professor. Cannot wait to take more of her classes. Entertaining, kind, and respectful of students and their time. The class was very staight-forward, she tells you exactly what you need to know to do well on exams and provides a reader with all the lecture notes. Cannot recommend her enough. Thank you, Professor Hamilton.
Hamilton is a real funny professor to listen to. All of the tested material is on the readings, lecture notes (which are all in slides that she provides), and the movie viewings in class. Super duper easy, and she is an entertaining lecturer. Would definitely take again.
Hamilton is a dope teacher to have. I would take her again, she gives three tests that are non-cumulative, so your grades are based off those three things. Do yourself a favor and simply look up the quizlets when studying for her class. It's really all on there.
Wonderful professor! There is a lot of material to cover but she makes it very accessible. She is smart, funny and genuinely cares about her students. You have to work for an A, but she doesn't try to trick you. If you show up to class, read the textbook, and study, you will do well. Take her class!
Graded on three scantron exams. Two extra credit options. Lots of personal stories and movie clips keep lecture content from being dull. Detailed study guide given for each exam.
Hamilton is WONDERFUL! Took her CMN3 & now her CMN101. Delivers every lecture with such elegance & clarity. Provides personal anecdotes & scenes from movies to make somewhat dry theories easy to understand. She is the epitome of a great professor & wish that she taught every CMN course. Reader is AMAZING- dives straight to the point! Highly Rec!
She's simply the best. Take anything you can with her. Amazing lecturer, really knows her stuff, and has the most fun personality. All classes she teaches are composed of 3 exams, all fairly easy. She's one of the few professors that is not also a reasercher, which I think makes her more accessible. Take 101 in the summer w/o the useless discussion
Overall, Professor Hamilton was an awesome professor! Loved the movies even though I had to know the concepts for the exams. It is highly recommended to go to lecture and take notes because some details are not covered in the reader but are tested. Discussion was a waste of time but easy if you memorize every reading, in detail, for each quiz.
the course content is kind of dry- it's mainly about workplace communication and policies- but Hamilton made every lecture super interesting and fun because she had so many real-life examples and stories that paired perfectly with the information you need to know. You also get extra credit just by watching Erin Brockovich and Apollo 13. Take her!!
Virginia is by far my favorite CMN professor at Davis. This is the 4th class I took with her an I absolutely loved it. Learned so much about relationships (romantic and non-romantic) and info that I can apply to my everyday life. She's awesome all around and the most caring + hilarious professor you'll ever have.
Dr. Hamilton is the best CMN professor at Davis. I took her for 101 and 136, got an A and A+ respectively. She is so funny, her lectures are almost like watching a stand-up routine, she is also incredibly inspiring and gives valuable relationship and career advice. Her class is easy and straightforward. Just do the study guide and you'll get an A.
Dr. Hamilton is amazing. She is hilarious, which makes lectures interesting. Be sure that you completely understand the material because in my opinion, the tests are difficult. Attend as many classes as possible, because she does play movie clips and such as examples, which sometimes end up on tests (also it's good to be exposed to examples)
This is my 2nd time taking one of Dr. Hamilton's classes, and I wish I would have taken more of her classes. She makes bland topics interesting, really helps with study guides, and overall really cares about her students. I definitely recommend taking one of her classes :)
Very Nice person. I'm already signed up for another class with her next quarter. The class is entirely based on three exams. I didn't really take the class seriously at first and bombed the first, but I was able to raise my grade with the next two. Textbook is absolutely mandatory, unfortunately. Around 30% of questions are directly from readings.
Hamilton is the best professor I have had at Davis. The way she speaks always left me wanting to do my homework and study. She makes every communications class interesting with her personal examples, jokes and clips. I highly recommend her!
I am taking her for anything and everything that I can. Best teacher at UC Davis. One of the only UC Davis teachers that doesn't make me want to put my head through a meat grinder Daniel
I took this class looking at the reviews but it is just so much harder. So many assignments and papers. DO NOT assume that this class is an easy A. You will have to work super hard to even pass the class. I am a straight A student who recieved my first B- after ALLLL THE HARD WORK i put into this class :( !!!!
I know she's popular but I really didn't like her. Held a lot of judgmental views of groups despite claiming to be woke. Overshared a ton about her personal life (told us her kids were accidents, she slept with her boss and messed around in the broom closets in the department...). Tests were stupid easy and I never went to lecture, still got an A.
Awesome, educational and entertaining lectures. Professor Hamilton cares about her students and is easily accessible outside of class if you need help. There are two exams and a final. There is no attendance requirement. Someone I know missed four weeks and she got a B+. Extra credit is offered.
Hamilton was one of the better CMN professors as she always had something interesting to say and had a sense of humor. Beware of the first exam. I bombed it, however, I was able to get my grade back up to an A due to extra credit opportunities and studying harder. The idea that this class is laughably easy is entirely subjective so put in the work
CMN 120 with Hamilton. Really tough class. Not easy. The reviews about CMN136 different from 120. It is a TON of work. There are TONS of memorization. Do NOT TAKE if you want EASY A. Take at your own risk
Class graded by 3 exams. Funny lectures that sometimes go off-topic, but you still have to know ALL of her words, because the examples she says in-class are on exams. You also FOR SURE have to do the reading (in the book SHE edited), because the lecture info and book info are the same topic, but different concepts. Really good class, though!
Class was very interesting. She uses a lot of personal stories and movie clips as examples for the different theories. Although attendance is not mandatory, you should go to class. Her examples are not in the notes and those really help with remembering the information. Read the textbook since she asks questions during quizzes and exams.
I took her for 120 & 136! I LOVED HER. She is so passionate and cares so much. The tests can be challenging. I personally think 136 was more difficult. A lot of memorizing but if you go over your notes, read, and attend lectures you should be good. I suck as exams and I still passed. She wants you to succeed. DO THE STUDY GUIDE ASK QUESTIONS!
Yeah, shes as great as people say. Incredibly entertaining lectures make it easy to learn the material. The tests are by no means brutal if you study well, which is easy to do when she gives you a study guide. Textbook reading is actually required as she tests specifically on it. One of my favorite professors ever
CMN 136 is a pretty easy class. Basically, if you study off her lecture notes and read the book a couple of times, exams will be pretty easy. She offers an extra credit assignment, which is basically come to class and watch the movie she puts on. 3 exams and extra credit are what are included in the grade.
CMN 136 was one of the easiest class I took at UC Davis. Professor Hamilton tries to make class fun by giving personal examples. Her exams were easy as she just takes them out directly from her lecture notes. She does make you buy her textbook and is mandatory since the test consists of question from the textbook.
Dr. H is such a sweet woman! Her anecdotes from her personal life really help you connect the material to a real world perspective. However, if youre a bad test taker like me, dont take this class. She grades solely off of 2 midterm and 1 final exams, in addition to a few extra credit points.
She is as nice as everyone says but it just felt wrong to watch a movie in R-1 class. Also, you could just memorize the study guide which is basically the test and do well. I would rather have challenging material than making an easy concept hard for the exams.
She is super funny during lectures and does go over a lot of material during class. Her class is based off three test and the class is also out of 150 points, each test is worth 50 points. She gives out all the lecture notes and the study guide for each exam at the beginning. I would recommend anyone to go take a class with her.
Cool professor, would recommend for anyone to take her. Her class is based off 3 tests and one extra credit assignment. The material itself is extremely boring, she makes the material digestible and somewhat interesting. I would take her again if she she is teaching other classes.
She is an awesome lecturer. Her lectures were asynchronous but she always posted timely and I was able to get the work done fast and easy. She provides fun real life examples which make the material easier to understand. 2 midterms and the final was not cumulative. there are homework and discussion assignments but those were super easy.
I've taken her for both 120 and 126 before so taking 101 with her online was pretty easy. She uploaded audio files and the slides. Discussion sections were just on the reading. Overall very easy class and she made the transition to online very seamless. She is one of favorite professors at UCD and I recommend everyone to try and take her class.
Listening to lectures felt like listening to a fun podcast, she is SO personable and interesting. Hamilton teaches this class really well by including all the information you need to know for the test on the slides, and then spends a good chunk of time applying ideas to the real world. I took this class just for fun, and would highly recommend it!
SUMMER 20'. Awesome lectures! Clear explanations & gives lots of examples from her own experience! Grade based on 3 exams w/ some tricky questions. You really have to pay attention to lecture examples & textbook material. Only room for avg of 5 incorrect questions per exam to get an A-. LOTS of memorization so your best friend is Quizlet.
Took this class during summer session! Lectures were fun and interesting. Graded on 3 exams (50 points each) with 2 extra credit points. Required a lot of memorization but definitely easy to get an A if you put in the effort! She allowed notes on the exams because classes were online which makes studying a lot easier and less stressful.
Virginia Hamilton is great. The class had a lot of material but she takes the time to thoroughly cover it and if you still don't understand, she's very accessible outside of class. Her exams were fair, as long as you paid attention during lecture and did the readings too. Overall, a very solid class with a great professor.
For the most part, lectures keep you engaged because she brings in interesting examples. Graded off of 3 tests, but they are pretty straight forward. She also offers many opportunities for extra credit, which encourages student engagement with one another. Would definitely take again!
The professor is sweet and caring, her lectures are engaging and interesting. There are three exams in this class that consist of the vast majority of the grade. Exams are not easy as she makes them quite confusing while time is strictly limited. You get one minute a question all while questions are often ambiguous.
Professor Hamilton was really amazing. You need to buy a textbook for CMN101 and watch her lecture videos for the exams. While watching lecture videos make sure to write down the specific examples she provides about the movies because they will appear on the exam!! She does offer extra credit that bumps you up (A- to an A, etc.)
Professor Hamilton is one of the best, most caring professors that I've ever taken. I took her during fall 2020, and it was my first quarter as a transfer. She was incredibly kind and understanding of my struggles and made sure I passed. Her lectures can get a little long and rambly, but they're recorded with slides. Take her!!
If you're going to take her classes during summer, think twice. The difficulties of the exams are harder than what people told. Time restraint is very straight, mc counts equal to the time you have and a lot of them are lengthy af. Lectures are voice recordings only and it's quite a mess. So think twice before you take it. Same as CMN 120
There's a reason why she has such a great rating. A real TEACHER, not lecturer. Very interesting class for a senior wanting a glimpse of communicating in the workplace. Great stories and overall great character. Long lectures yet never was bored in a single class.
really love her!! one of my favorite professors at UCD!!
Professor Hamilton is a great professor who really cares about her students and wants them to do well. Her tests can be a bit tricky at times though thats the only critique I have. Definitely one of the very few professors at Davis I have ever liked. Shes amazing and you should definitely take her classes.
Hamilton is a great professor who has interesting lectures. It's fairly easy to pass and while her exams can be challenging, they are manageable, fair, and she tends to have extra credit or curve if the class does poorly. Very fair and respected prof.
Her lectures can be long, but she keeps them interesting with plenty of anecdotes. Her grading system relies solely on three exams (plus extra credit) and as a bad test taker I was struggling in her class. She noticed this and sent an email containing tips for doing better in her class. She is very caring, fair, and a great professor.
I took 136, 120, 101 with here. Her lectures are amazing. Great professor and person. However, she is very test heavy and her tests can get difficult, especially if you are a bad test taker like me, but her class is definitely worth if you are a comm major
Grade's = 3 exams which are 40 multi-choice Q's. Some Qs aren't written clearly/seem tricky. Flashcards are good; it's very easy to get a grade BELOW an A because of this. Class struggled, as discussed in discord. She provides all the notes but you will have to think deeper. +1.5% extra credit. Talks about her personal life.
This professor is extremely tough. As many others have said before me, she uses 3 exams for your entire grade so if you are not a good test taker like myself, this class will be extremely difficult.
love her
Dr. Hamilton is an amazing lecturer and it does not at all feel like you are within a class. They make their course very entertaining and it is really fun watching and being present in class. The exams can be kind of tricky and there is a textbook that you need and will be tested on. I really recommend them !!
She really wants you to do goos in her class. She is a great lecture and cars for her students. Her exams are fair and she always has a study guide for both the lecture and readings. Also very few readings
Love Professor Hamilton! I had her last quarter and enjoyed ever lecture. If you study for the exams, they are straightforward and very reasonable. I got easy A's on all of them! I would suggest having a little study group and quizzing each other with the great study guide she provides. Very entertaining, I never wanted to miss class!
Incredible. Lectures were clear and actually interesting. She genuinely cares for students' well-being and that's reflected in the way she shapes the course. 6 points of EC and 3 non-cumulative exams. Make a quizlet and you're set.
My favorite professor at UC Davis! Study for tests and attend lecture and you're guaranteed a good grade! I have taken cmn101 and cmn136, and am looking forward to taking 120 with her! She genuinely cares about her students and is very kind and understanding.
Love love love Virginia Hamilton. I am currently taking the very last class she offers before I graduate. Every class I have taken with her has been amazing, without falter. She has made all the information relatable and interesting, and if you put in the effort, your grades will be rewarding as well. Could not recommend her classes enough.
Hamilton is a relatable, funny, and caring professor. Content we learned was actually useful for post grad work. This class was based off 3 tests and 1 extra credit assignment. If you aren't a good test taker, be ready to study a lot for this class. Textbook readings were short but tests were hard.
Hamilton is by far my favorite professor here at UC Davis, her lectures were always interesting and exams are easy. Questions for the exam come directly from the lecture slides and some from the textbook (reading is very minimal for all of her classes). I have taken all of her courses and I couldn't recommend her more, definitely take her class!
D1 yapper. Her classes could be short but she loves to talk about examples and personal stories that I don't think add much educationally but are tested. Content is pretty easy but then exam comes and the way she phrases the questions are very confusing. Too much yapping it's not funny anymore.
Lecture is not mandatory but I highly suggest you go bc she tests on it a lot! tests are abnormally difficult but lectures are overall very entertaining. I personally would not take a class with Hamilton again but overall, it was definitely a learning experience for myself.
Goated professor in terms of lecture and extra credit. She is a yapper in lectures, sharing personal stories & how they relate to the subject, they're funny and crazy. Tho, there's 3 tests in total heavy based on lectures and some reading, with tricky questions. Many EC opportunities will save you by half a letter grade. Study for those tests.
Fills her lectures with personal antidotes which are hilarious and help you understand the content (included on exams so remember them!) Grade based on discussion attendance & 3 exams that are a tad more difficult than they should've been but there is a good amount of extra credit. Go to lecture & take notes & you should be golden.
I am talking my second class with Virginia right now. She's really sweet and has interesting lectures. Her tests are some of the hardest I have experienced at Davis as a communications major but if you pay attention to lectures and put in the work it will show.
Professor Hamilton's lectures are a delight - she brings in personal stories that really help cement the course concepts. The exams are challenging but manageable with good attendance and review using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook. Overall, an entertaining and rewarding class.
I took Hamilton for CMN 101 & 136 both had the same problem of only being graded on three exams. Because you are graded on so few things you need to do well on these extremely hard exams or else. Many times she has messed up the answer key on the scantron or mixed up classes too. Hamilton is a good professor, but this is an issue for her classes.
I took Hamilton for 101 and I absolutely loved her. She is so funny and her lectures are very interesting since she provides real life experiences. I recommend studying pretty heavily since this course is very exam heavy. Overall great professor and I would definitely take her again.
Truly, I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. The class is basically determined by the three exams you take over the quarter, which I didn't mind. She was an amazing lecturer and really kind. I truly would enjoy taking any of her other classes. Just be prepared study! And she is pretty generous with curving and rounding up.
Very entertaining lectures that weren't mandatory but definitely helpful to attend (slides were posted though). 3 non-cumulative exams and 2 small assignments for the whole quarter. She does allow the option for extra credit and typically curves the tests a little bit. Overall, super nice, funny, & caring professor & I would recommend.
She spent too much time on her personal life during lectures instead of teaching. When I asked her to round my 69.58 to a 70, she was unnecessarily rude, which felt unprofessional. A little compassion or flexibility would've went a long way. If you want a professor focused on teaching and supporting students, look elsewhere.
I love Hamilton's courses. She is engaging and funny, and connects real stories to the content. In order to do well, I highly recommend going to class and her study sessions as many of her stories tie into assignments and exams. I did very well in her classes because of this, but if you don't put in effort/ go to class you will probably struggle.
So funny and keeps you engaged. Typically, curves which is nice. Best Communication professor! only three midterms and she gives study guides, very few readings and her discussion sections are mandatory but I rec going. Great stories and examples so go to lecture they will be on the tests i promise you!
95% of your grade is based on three exams. The exception is participations points and a rounding point. Her stories are fun sometimes, but she doesn't know the appropriate boundaries of when they should and shouldn't be shared with students
Very fun, kind professor. Has a lot of life stories that tie well into lectures (most times). That being said, her tests are among the hardest I've taken at UC Davis across all of the disciplines I've studied. You need to give 100% effort in this class if you want a good grade.
Hamilton is very kind, funny, and easygoing, but her lectures can drag on a little. There was one class where she only covered 6 slides in the span of 1.5 hours. She grades solely on 3 exams and 1 assignment, which can bad; if you do poorly on even one of the exams, it can lower your grade drastically. Besides the tricky exams, Hamilton is great.
Great class. My grade was poor because I didn't put enough in for the tests which were pretty hard. This is one of like 2 classes I have taken at Davis where the content applied to my life and I still think about the content. I highly recommend taking this class especially if you are a good test taker or do not want to go to lecture.
(*insert plankton groaning meme*) Davis, PLEASE hire MORE and BETTER professors for the coms department!! I'm tired of having to take all my major classes with all these god awful professors like Hamilton. Tried to avoid her like the plague and couldn't get another class in time before it filled up, despite having major priority?! Insanity...
This course is tough and challenging. You need to spend a lot of time preparing for the exam because she only grade on the 3 exams and the 1 course application assignment. If you are not a good test taker, avoid her class. She offers a study guide for the exam, and that is the only thing you need to know.
Her lectures can be a bit scattered but she's pretty funny, has a lot of anecdotes for all the topics. 1 or 2 questions on the exam will be related to the anecdotes so helpful to go to class but won't be the end of the world if you get those wrong. The content was pretty easy for the most part, exams aren't bad and hw + extra credit is super easy.
Took during summer session. Very interesting course, completely asynchronous. Lecture videos were really long and she used a lot of personal stories which were on her exams so make sure to study those. Tests were hard due to time constraint. 2 essays due at end of course, pretty simple. Good curve. Would take again, exams were definitely tough.
Excellent lecturer. Her personal anecdotes were initially off-putting, but I found them extremely helpful for exam prep and testing. I will be taking Prof. Hamilton again. Her tests are dense, but not tricky. Study the material well and success will find you. Some in my study group bombed the first midterm, and still finished with an "A". Fantastic
