SHE IS HORRIBLE
she is clear with her teaching and goes through lots of examples, not that bad
No Comments
Great lady, funny, makes math 101 relatable to life, knows we don't want to take that, and tries to make it as painless as possible. Explains things as clearly as can be for math and is great with extra help.
Explained topics clearly and slowly. If you attend class and ask for help when needed, this class is a breeze.
Can be rude. Thinks she is funny but not. Not a good teacher
No Comments
Did lots of examples but didn't really explain anything.
Shes a lot easier than Buck Stephens!
She totally thinks she is funny but isnt! Has a tendency to be very unclear when she teaches.
She is very good at explaining things- she not only explains all the steps to a problem, but also where she got each step. She definitely tries to make the class as painless as possible.
Excellent instructor, good class, makes things easy to understand... have to go to class to keep up.
Not funny at all. Good teacher though. Knows how to explain material.
a lil rude at times, but she knew what she was teaching and explained it mostly well... she'll become the cell phone nazi and threaten to get up and leave if your phone goes off! ppl that do that are rude, but she'll get mad at the entire class cuz of it!
Being in this woman's class was like being tied to a chair and forced to watch Silver Spoons re-runs. If you enjoy humor that is annoying and highly grating, this is the teacher for you!
Sometimes she's kinda ****y, but she actually teaches. The only math teacher i've had at NIU that seems to do her job... compared to the rest of the school, she's an ok teacher; compared to the math teachers, she's 'amazing'.
She is the only math teacher I have had at NIU so far that actually teaches and knows what she is doing. She is very helpful, nice, and clear. If you have a hard time w/math, get her for your teacher.
Oh Virginia..She knows what she is doing, but likes to teach w/ overheads that are pre-made. This is good and bad.FINE A VALID QUIZ SEAT.this teacher has no prob giving tests on 12 sections at a time, but doesn't give a study guide. just do 500 practice probs and u will do great.. Grade:C---
Has a bad attitude. Heard she yelled at some kid who tried to seek help during her office hours. Enjoys making people feel inferior and stupid. Exams are hard, and she provides no study guide, unlike other sections. But she did curve both exams, since we all did horrible, so it isn't all bad.
ALTHOUGH SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE IS TEACHING SHE HAS A BAD ATTITUDE AND SHE IS JUST PLAIN MEAN TO STUDENTS
Virginia Kim. She seems to be obsessed with watching your signs. She could be a nice teacher if she wasn’t so cold hearted. She doesn’t seem personable. Even her TA Seethgram thinks badly of her. Watch out incoming freshman. Try to get a different teacher
oh Virginia, what to say..i guess shed be a good teacher if she wasnt so plain MEAN.Besides the fact that she yells at kids, and she puts the emphasis on the wrong syllables of words, she sounds like a phone sex operator, does butt crunches during class and she doesnt actually TEACH anything..shes ok
Virginia Kim is a very nice person if you like sarcasm. If you don't, i'd suggest getting someone who isn't such a C&#% all of the time... Make sure you think before you speak and definitly find A VALID F#*%ING QUIZ SEAT
VERY VERY VERY UNRECOMENDED! If you have never taken calculus don't take this class because she explains lessons as if you already have an understanding of the course and its material. One of the Worst teachers i have ever had!!!!!!!
This teacher is terrible. She was so bipolar that I couldn't even focus on the material. She would sound like she was trying to seduce the class and then she would change personalities and she would be screaming at us. It was nuts! DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!

She has an interesting personality, sometimes she made it hard to concentrate because I had to stop myself from laughing. Overall it wasn't that bad of a class.
Very tough. She grades homework for correctness, not just completion. Also, looks like a money frog.
Dont take this class with this professor, if you already have DROP IT!!! If it is passed the deadline you can withdraw, which I did and got 100% refund. My friend stuck it out and failed. She is very unapproachable and if you do ask her a question she says "very quickly, very quickly I dont have time"
This lady is very intelligent and dedicated about this subeject. Her teaching syle is universal for all type of students. She is very busy but if you schedule an appointment with her she is all ears. Basically if you put in the effort you will pass this class.
Prof. Kim is excellent. If you attend lectures regularly then you will pass. She always gives great examples and will always make sure that you understand before you leave. Although she isn't very personable, don't let that intimidate you, she can be nice.
DON'T TAKE HER! She's a drill sargent! Very fast paced and gets annoyed when she has to back track to help you. NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE!
This teacher is very smart and this class is not easy. If you study you can pass this class.
In my four years of college, she was the worst, most unpleasant teacher I had. VERY abrasive personality and really needs to cut back on the caffeine. Treats her students like five year olds. Avoid her.
I think she is a good teacher. She just assumes that everyone knows exactly what is going on in the class at ALL times. She also talks way too much about unnecessary things like why shes using the same peice of paper or what we'll have time to do, but we run out of time because she spent 2 minutes talking about it.
Great teacher! Will help if you ask, and is extremely clear in class. Comes off mean, but if you just go to class and do the work, you realize shes not.
Kim was very clear when explaining material and offers a lot of extra credit for being present in class. She may not come off very friendly but she will help if you ask for help. Easy class.
She was very knowledgeable, but she assumed everyone knew how to do everything. im not a mathematical mind, and i hate the subject. if you go to lecture everyday, you will get 50 extra credit points thruout the semester. i managed a C, and it was very difficult. i cant imagine teachers being much better, but she was manageable
She was the worst teacher I have ever had. Only passed because I had a friend in another class. She "left out" important formulas, and treated her students like children constantly overpronunciating her words, and reminding us of every possible way she could give us a zero.
2nd worst teacher I've ever had. Assumed that everyone understood everything that was going on at all times, and would yell at students when they didn't understand what was going on. She obviously hates teaching and i don't understand why she is teaching.
Ms. Kim is really good.... if you go to class and pay attention. She puts on a hard front but is really a nice lady. You get your Homework on Monday thats due Friday. You have a quiz or test every friday but its split up into managable sections. If you don't get at least a C in this class then you didn't try very hard.Oh and get the solutions book!
Hands down the worst teacher I've even had. I don't know how this woman got her PhD because she seems less than enthusiastic about the subject. She is extremely unprofessional and patronizing and wastes countless minutes on completely irrelevant topics. She clearly does not enjoy teaching and there is always a negative atmosphere in the classroom.
if you do the homework, attend all available office hours, and read the lessons before it is taught in lecture, i think it's a pretty easy class. too bad i didn't keep on top of these things...and i know she's nice in person and all, but i'm afraid to approach her now because she seems mean during lecture... pray for my grade:/
Mrs. Kim speaks clearly and explains problems well although sometimes goes away from the subject. Their is a quiz almost every week but did not get back any of them until after the exam. Homework was collected same day of exam and did not except it early. The quizzes and class lecture does NOT match the content of the exams.
remember notation
She is a bad person and wont teach you anything useful...
Thumbs down, she literally gives me headaches. Bad teaching.
Ok, if you like sarcasm, which I do, that's not the bad part.If you don't avoid her like the plague. She is not very good at teaching basically because she thinks everyone should already know the subject matter! I am HORRIBLE at math and just having me copy notes isnt gonna do anything for me. Cell phone spaz as well. She will freak if she hears on
She has a personality that is very over-the-top and over dramatic, as if she thinks she is acting in a movie or something. She gives (almost question for question) the tests before the exam day, but doesnt give the answers. That makes it hard to know if you actually got anything right. To her credit though, she does grade very quickly.
Great teacher...easy class if you just do your HW and go to class. HW is absolutely necessary, not for grading, but for doing well on quizes and exams. Easy A if you work hard n do the HW!!! Would recommend...
Overall, very good teacher. Very articulate about steps to problems. During lecture time, she clearly explains what will be learned. She provides many examples and walk through them. Although sometimes impatient with questions (like we are supposed to know), she still will answer them. In all, stay on top of your homework and do take good note
bad teacher. shes basicly screams at you. do not bring technology to class she freaks out and will make scene. you have a quiz every week and like 4 tests they very similar to the practice tests class was pretty hard im surprised i even got a c.
Excellent teacher; however, she is impatient at times and very dramatic. Good look future students :/
By far one of the worst teachers I have ever had of my education career. The inflection of her voice changes constantly and is extremely annoying. She expects you to know everything before she teaches it to you. Drop her if you get her, and take the class again next semester.
This was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She never seemed interested in being in teaching and seemed to always have an attitude. If you know you have her, try to get a new teacher.
worst teacher EVER. if you have her, switch out of her class.
RUDE/TERRIBLE professor. I have never had such a rude and arrogant individual for a teacher. I DO NOT KNOW HOW SHE GOT HIRED..must be a good actress. Spends most of her time complaining about wasting time and yells at people with questions rather than do her job and TEACH. Somebody who makes a lot of money not doing her job.
She's probably the rudest person I have ever known. Her notes are clear, but she spends half of class complaining and yelling at students when she should be teaching. It's college, who cares if kids are late to class or talk? I wish she'd care a little less about insignificant things and do what she was hired to do: teach. DONT TAKE HER CLASS
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! her notes are clear but she spends the whole class period complaining about things. Her attitude is annoying. She will yell at students when they are confused about the lesson. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is very passionate about math, but can't get her point across. Most of the time she trails off topic, and then lectures and yells at the class. She needs to just teach the class because we don't care about all the little things she HAS to add in. We are college students but she is very condescending, and acts like its a highschool class.
Just her teaching style becomes so distracting, it makes it impossible to comprehend what she is teaching us. She complains about the most random things, often times complaining more than actually teaching us something. I'd have better luck teaching myself.
Do not take her class. She spends more time complaining than actually teaching. She expects you to know what is going on before she even teaches it. The online assignments take over a week to complete and are useless. She is always in a bad mood and freaks out at people when they ask a question. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Used to get pretty good marks in math until I took this class. She likes to skip over steps and spends a lot of time yelling at the class and complaining. At times if you dare to ask a question she will call you out to make you feel stupid for even asking instead of just answering the question. Do NOT RECOMMEND HER.
Her class consists of 50% yelling and 50% of her doing math problems she doesn't explain. She doesn't care about her students at all and she yells at you if you ask for help. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Can't tell if she's yelling because someone asked a question she's gotten for the umpteenth time, angry at the world, or if that's her normal voice...(she yells a lot). But, I've talked to her in person, and she's as sweet as can be. Very intimidating woman, but get past that and I think that she can teach the material well enough.
If you're enrolled in her class right now and you have the chance to switch classes still. DO IT. DO IT WHILE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. Yells the WHOLE time and just looks angry at the world.
She yells at whole class as if we are still in high school! she needs to understand that we are in college and we can do what we want. but overall she does know the material and is a great teacher. if you ask her for help outside of class she is very nice. She is a great teacher who knows the material very well just has a horrible attitude.
Her demeanor is very interesting, it almost seems as if she is yelling at us for not knowing the subject yet(which is why we are there). She is a bit sketchy when explaining things. I feel if you are willing to put a lot of time and effort into this class with her, you will do fine, if not, don't get this teacher.
Teachers or instructors like her are always an obstacle to student learning. she is not there to teach but rather, intimidate students with her position. As students we have questions that neede answer but she is always fraustrated with herself and tries to laid it on student. Moreover, hse is very "cheeky and snubbish" to any question I had.
I took this class senior year of high school and received a B, I got placed into MATH 155 when I took the placement test, I take the class here with Kim and receive a D. Terrible teacher. She yells at the class when she brings up things we should already know from previous courses. Heard she is a nice person but she shouldn't have became a teacher.
Why did I take this class? Struggling hardcore because of the lack of material taught in class. I dont even know what you would do if you happen to miss class because the book sure as hell wont help you much. If I had to redo this year, it would be to go back and change the course or teacher.
Terrible teacher. She yells at her students, and gives attitude back. She hardly is gentle when giving instructions and comes off rude. I took trig in high school and i passed with an A-, in this class I am presently getting a C-/D. She doesn't go into enough detail and doesn't reference the book at all which is difficult come homework time.
I want to claw my eyes out when I think of this class. I did not listen to rate my professor. I should have. Awful experience
Very rude teacher. She would repeat this particular saying every class period, "THIS IS NOT AN ALGEBRA CLASS". It seemed like she didn't enjoy teaching very much. If you have other options I would not choose her.
Kim is not a very good teacher at all. I found myself teaching myself A LOT, which made me feel like I wasted money on this class. TAs will be your biggest help in this class. Befriend them and go meet them in the Math Lab as much as you can. Study the tests!! It'll be hard but you can pass this class with a C like I did. A "B" or "A"? Maybe not.
Do not take this teacher. She stops class for any little distraction.
She is by far the worst professor i have ever had. She is rude and honestly just plain mean. She yells at her students while teaching and her angry unnecisary teaching style distracts you from the actuall subject. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I usually like strict profs b/c I learn a lot from them. I got an A in Algebra last sem but Calc w/Ms. Kim is so bad I dropped. She sucks the life out of Math. When students have ?s, she condescends them before answerng, making evryone afraid to ask anything. Outside class, she's a nice person. Has a pretty, warm smile in passing; just not in class
I have never particularly loved math , however this woman made me hate it. I received a B + because I practically taught myself everything. She is rude , loud and possibly the worst teacher NIU has to offer. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to sit in a class with this woman. If you ever read this Virginia , I know you're an unhappy person.
She should not be teaching. Chronically and preemptively berated the class regarding prerequisite algebra skills. She stops class constantly for any PERCEIVED distraction. I have no idea how she even has a current rating of 2.6 on this site. Worst. Teacher. Ever. Ms. Kim, if you read this: find a job you enjoy and are better suited for.
She was terrible she expected you to know things you never learned and if you ask her a question she looks at you like your dumb. She is a very unfair grader will take points off even if she doesnt like the way you do your work! Terrible teacher!
As I read all of the rates, many people say that she's rude or mean. However generally, she is actually has a kind side to it. Don't take it personal; she is doing this because she is motivating you to succeed, especially in her class. That is why she is tough when it comes to teaching. I was her student and quite frankly, I learned alot.
In high school, I got an A in Pre-Calc and AP Calc, so I knew all of the material very well. I still tried hard and studied. I got A's on my homework and most of my quizzes, but no matter how hard I tried I failed all of the exams. For the final I spent 10 hours studying, yes I kept tract to prove a point, and still failed my final. Terrible.
She can be very straight forward at first but once you talk to her she is OK. She stops class because people come in late, so she wastes a lot of time doing that. We started exams late, my second exam I started 10 minutes late because I was waiting for her to give us the exam. She really tries but I would not recommend her to anyone.
She really doesn't know how to teach. She definitely knows her stuff but she doesn't know how to relay that to the students. She also "does the most" for example, someone came into class late (in a lecture hall) and she stops in mid sentence to stare them down although none of the students really noticed he came in until she made such a big deal.
Ms. Kim maintains an adversarial dynamic with her students, choosing to fight against them rather than for them. Her lectures are compact; she knows her stuff. Still, no student should ever feel intimidated by their professor to the point where they can't ask questions in class. Her tongue in cheek delight and subsequent anger is inflammatory.
Kim is one of those professors that seems SUPER nice on the first day of class, but then terrifies you later. She's a great instructor as long as you show up. She's scary, but as long as you keep your phone put away, show up at least 5 minutes before class starts, and you pay attention, you'll be on her good side. Attendance isn't taken, but go.
Worst professor I've ever had in my life. Rude and doesn't help her students whatsoever. Absolutely horrible, I hope this saved someone from taking her because you will fail for sure. Horrible teacher. Don't take her class. It sucks.
She does not give half-credit. It's all or nothing. Show up to class on time. If you are late, expect to be berated for doing so. Mocks students who ask questions that she seems are obvious. Is very difficult to talk to. I would rather be bitten by a goose everyday for a year instead of taking her class again.
She seems to be a very angry woman but she is a pretty clear teacher. Pass the class on the first try so you don't have to deal with her again. Take good notes!
Virginia Kim constantly has an attitude with her students. Never gives a clear answer and is always negative about everything. DO NOT TAKE HER if you want to pass this course.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER BECAUSE YOU WILL REGRET IT. TOUGH GRADER AND NO PARTIAL CREDIT MOCKS AND MAKES FUN OF HER STUDENTS EXAMS ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD FAILS MOST OF YOUR CLASS AND WONT GIVE A CURVE IF YOU WANT TO PASS TAKE IT WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR , LIKE MYERS SHE IS REALLY GODD
I'll be honest. I hated this professor up until the last month of classes or so, and you'll see why if you take her. Do NOT skip class. She gives examples other than those in the book, answers every question, and genuinely does want everyone to do well. It'll seem like she hates you, but don't let it fool you - she's a GREAT professor.
Prof. Kim has a very demeaning attitude, especially when you ask her questions in class. I personally did better in the class when I started skipping her lectures and taught myself using MyMathLab's examples. The tests are multiple choice so no partial credit: make sure to study! I never once opened the book because of MML's helpful examples.
Virginia Kim is the worst professor I've had in my life!!!! You do not need the book, I didn't open it not once. Never skip a my math lab assignment, they are very helpful. She is a very rude, angry, and short tempered woman.
Man I really did not like Prof Kim. I thought she had a pretty nasty attitude and she made herself incredibly unapproachable. She didn't teach me anything, she just made things I learned in MMLmore confusing. I wish I could have liked her more because her grading scale seemed fair (85+ is an A, etc), but it's like that because her class is SO HARD.
