Overall she is a pretty chill professor, nothing exciting about class and nothing boring. Exams are easy and she lets you know what is going to be on them. The writing assignments we had to do were kind of lame, and she grades them rather harsh. She's not smokin' hot, but somedays she looks good.
Virginia Somes is very, very clear. An awesome teacher. You have to work, but it's very reasonable.
A good teacher. Doesn't move too quickly or too slowly in the course, but will not give away an easy A. Can be strict when she needs to be, but maintains a fairly positive environment.
This is a perfect teacher. Go and take her class!
Great teacher. Very helpful and clear. I would recommend her.
Pretty HOtt DuDez!
Best Teacher Ever
very thorough....
Knows her stuff
Virginia Somes is a great instructor. I look forward to having her in the fall.
Good teacher, her tests arnt that hard and she teaches you everything you need to know. As long as you stay up with your homework and pay attention you should do great in her class. Ask questions if you dont understand something and she is willing to help you out.
Great instructor, Went over all material clearly. I had not had math in over 15 years and she made it easy to understand.Highly recommend.
Extremely difficult!!! Does not seem to have a firm grasp on the information herself.
The bad thing about Virginia is that she explains it to you like you're a two year old. The good thing is she explains it to you like you're a two year old. She is clear and thorough. Do the homework and pay attention and you'll do great.
Virginia is a great teacher and explains things thoroughly, sometimes too thoroughly. She is humorless and uptight. She is often condescending in tone and enforces strict rules about bathroom breaks and talking. She should be a high school teacher. Keep up on your work and you'll do great. She's an amazing teacher but not very likable, overall

Do not take this woman unless you miss being in high school. In a 1hr 50min. lecture she does not allow students excuse themselves from the class room, under no circumstance does she accept late homework (even with a doctors note) and she is very non personable. I got far more from reading the book than listening to her monotone lectures. Horrible
For someone who struggles in math, Virgina was THE BEST pcc instructor I've had. I've taken MTH 95 3 times and thought myself dumb as a brick (plus, I'm to embarrassed to ask help during office hours) but she made things crystal clear IN THE CLASSROOM. Her tests are not tricky, and there is a reasonable amount of homework. Take her--she's good!
She is very thourough with teaching she expalins things well. Her test are difficult she gives a lot of word problems. I happend to go through a lot last term and she wasn't very understanding. She is fair and she makes no exceptions for anyone. Not even if some really bad things happen to you durring the term that would impact your grade.
Very fair, totally available for any help you need, and a very nice person. I thought the homework was WAY too much and I found the textbook to be just barely above useless, but Virginia more than made up for it by being a fantastic, and patient instructor. I would take her again in a heartbeat. 2/28 post below, no idea what you are talking about!
picky but educational professor
I have done really well in math until I met Virginia. Overall I would say she is a nice person and tries to be helpful. Overall I didn't enjoy her class at all and I do enjoy math. She didn't give enough time on tests and graded way too much homework. I turned in 15 pages of homework on average per week. Too much. I wouldn't recommend her.
Virginia's teaching style is clear and mindful of the skills you'll need as you continue on to higher mathematics. She's great with in-class questions and keeps accessible office hours. I'd thought I'd be a math flunky for life until I took a class from her!
Had Virginia for 61 awhile ago. Have had others for a few terms, so I had to come back to re-rate Virginia. She is hands-down the BEST math teacher PCC has to offer. Absolutely crystal clear. If you don't get it from Virginia, you probably don't speak English. She is the Messiah of math. Bow to her and learn.
Viginia assigns mass amounts of homework in order to weed out the slackers. When asked for help she refers students to the learning center instead of being available herself. She told me that I wouldn't need algebra in chemistry only scientific notation. She is unhelpful, uninspiring, and her rigidness debilitates any chance of likability.
I never left class confused. If you need to have math spoon fed to you like myself this is the instructor for you! She is very strict and assigns alot of homework, but it's good for you. It also helped your grade. I enjoyed attending her class, and would take math from her again.
Extremely ridged and no flexibility. I tried to talk to her, but she cut me off and spent the time arguing her point, so I just held my breathe and in the end I told her 'that is exactly what I just said to you.' Sigh. I would never take her class again.
Joyless and forbidding, like my worst high school teachers. Assigns mountains of homework (even if you fall seriously ill) and rarely makes herself available outside of class for questions, instead preferring to refer students to the help center. Any student lacking a facility for math should steer clear.
she doesn't take ur homework. and expects u to take quizes on the homework every day.
Virginia is clear about class expectations and is very thorough in her examples in explanations. She is never to busy to meet with a student and even though the class was hard she made it enjoyable for the people who don't love math like some of us do.
Virginia was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the subject, answered questions in a very comprehensible manner. She seemed to enjoy teaching the class, which is important. However she is overly meticulous when grading homework. Expects students to completely copy down HW Q's and docks points for not doing so (takes off 20%!).
Virginia's class made my interest in math go up quite a bit. She is thorough and crystal clear on her guidelines. She assigns homework every class and you are tested at the beginning of every period on the material from the class before. It is a lot of work, but for those who want to LEARN its a great class. Do not take if you are just trying to ge
Outstanding instructor! Meets all 3 learning modalities. Uses the blackboard extensively with colored markers for the visuals. Excellent use of voice inflection and energy for the auditory learner. And gives an athletic performance for the kinesthetics, using body posture, hands, and positioning.
Virginia is very good about explaining things and helps a ton after class. She is really patient and helpful. Her class is not easy, but I learned so much! Best math teacher at PCC so far!
Virginia is, by far, the best math instructor I have ever had. She is well organized, her explanations as well as her expectations are clear, and she is readily (and eagerly) available for help. If you do what is asked, you will do well. That said, this is a demanding class and is for serious students only.
She made me interested in math! A little fast paced but will take the time to clarify for you.
Took Virginia for 60 and 65. I love Ms. Somes. She obviously cares about teaching and the outcome of her students. She takes extra time to check if homework is completed each day and gives quizzes on the material taught. She responds to e-mail, available at office hours, and returns exams quickly. She's the best teacher I've ever had!
Love this woman! By far the best math teacher I have ever had in my life, and I've been around for a while! Expectations are very clear and if you listen and do your homework you should do fine.
Somes is not a good fit for complainers! Serious about doing the wrk, coming to class prepared? She's excellent, dedicated, organized. She made it crystal clr wht was expected, wht would be on the exams. Was willing to help, available, (had ample office hrs),and put forth an impressive effort to assist all learning styles/levels. Won't hld ur hnd!
Somes is clear in her classroom lectures but not in her testing questions or grading methods. In addition, she is rigid and does not respond well to being questioned. Out of 3 math instructors at the college she was my least favorite. Not recommended.
Somes' grading is unreasonable. She has an irritating tendency to mark off for things she did not explicitly ask for in the first place and she does not give enough time for tests. In addition she was rarely available for assistance outside of class and constantly stated that she did not get enough sleep. I do not recommend taking a class from her.
Virginia was great. She knows the material and wants you to get it. Breaking in to calculus is not easy, and she's a good hand-holder. Weekly quizzed were pretty low stress and very helpful. She can be a little inflexible with discrepancies. Truth is, she might actually be awful, but I had a wicked crush on her the whole term, so you be the judge.
Her tests are hard, but she is fair. I never doupt what she says (strong feature for a math teacher) people who complain are not doing the work, if they were they would be happy:)
We get a break if we finish the first of two daily quizzes early, on average it consists of 2-3 minutes... and she went nuts when people weren't back on the dot, stating she should pass out another quiz so those not back will get a zero. She takes points off for not stapling papers. She treats students like they're in high school. Unfair grading
She helped me "get" math. This is her gift. She is clear and teaches in a way that doesn't clutter your mind. I took as many of her classes as I could up through statistics. And She was available and interested in helping outside class time. If only all math teachers where this focused. Thank you V. Somes.
If you want to take this class with virginia, you should be some what good at math to begin with. She gives out a lot of homework, so I found myself spending more time on getting it done than actually getting it right. Also when asking for help on some things she would always tell me to retake the previous class.
Very nice lady, but not actually a good teacher. Her class is pretty damn easy... Goes slow over material which is nice. Daily quizzes that are easy, don't have to turn in homework. If you get math this will be a breeze. Overall, she's a peach and I don't mind her class but she doesn't have a great knack for teaching.
This instructor is the best Math teacher I have ever had. Granted, the first day I thought I wouldn't like her because she has so many rules, etc. However, these are to teach you and benefit you in the end. Math was my worst subject and I have an A in this class and am doing better in it than any other course of mine. Thank you Virginia
Great math teacher! At first I thought she was too strict, but as the class went on she showed a lot of interest in the students. Gives a lot of homework. Great reviews before each exam. It's not an easy class but I learned more with her than with any other math teacher.
Super organized teacher, very structured in her teaching style. If you hate math, haven't taken it for a long time or just don't get it, this is a good teacher to take. You absolutely cannot cut class and have to do the homework she assigns, but if you do both of these things you will do great with her. Highly recommend if you have math issues.
Best Math teacher I've ever had. Very difficult material, but the extreme structure of her class allows for a great ability to grasp the concepts.
Wow, I find her to be terrible. 2nd worst prof I've had @PCC. She is so rude, disrespectful & condescending to students. Argumentative, rigid & unfair grader. Has so many rules & treats students like middle schoolers. Weighs format of answer more than getting it correct. Lashes out at students during class for talking about math. Hated her class.
shes good at her job. i think that she is a too hard of a grader. she does not allow for you to retake anything. does not allow anytype of late work. i felt as if i was spending more time on just trying to get it done than learning anything. i recommend getting a different teacher!!
She shows no pity when grading exams. Plan to spend at least 10 hours per week outside of class on hw. On a positive note, she is very interactive and is always very clear and well centered. I dont know if she's required to assign the amount of homework to assign, or she just likes to hand people bad grades.. Who knows.
Virginia is nice, but she needs to realize that people have jobs during the weekends and may not have the time to thoroughly finish homework with over 100 questions. She also needs to show more leniency when grading mid-terms. I'd avoid her if you work and go to school. She wont show u any pity.
TERRIBLE! Somes is a smart woman, but awful teacher. Her tests are crazy hard and she grades extremely harsh. Not to mention she assigns an average of 100 hw problems due every class. She is also very monotonous, intimidating and comes off as rude sometimes. is not clear in examples. I would not recommend her unless you are a complete masochist.
Somes is horrible and should not be an entry level instructor. She assigns crazy amounts of homework. Take my advice and avoid her course at all cost. Your GPA will suffer
DO NOT TAKE. Not because she's a difficult, nit-picky grader (she is), and not because she's organized and on time (she's that too), but because you won't learn much from her. Lecture added NOTHING to book material. Grading emphasized attention to detail, though she showed little that in her lectures, quizzes, and exams. MANY mistakes made on them.
She is the worst public educator I have ever experienced. She likes to make high-level math students feel stupid so that she feels better about herself. Lectures are copy-pasted from somewhere and there are ALWAYS mistakes; even on exams. Do not take her, she will spoil a simple class for you.
Somes was the worst instructor I've ever had. Lecture added nothing to the book, insane amount of hw and rude to students. Extremely unfair grading especially on exams. DO NOT TAKE!
Virginia is by far the worst math instructor ive ever experianced. Its almost as if she enjoys tearing down your mathmatics confidence. Grading is COMPLETELY unfair, theres a ton of homework EVERY NIGHT, nothing is accepted late. She times all breaks in class like your in first grade. DO not register w/ this instructor if you have a job or a life.
IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL CHOOSE SOMES. I have had Somes for 3 math classes. She is SO on point! Her grading IS fair, the only problem is that she won't miss any mistakes. You can't miss any classes and you had better do your homework. She will make you understand the material. Challenging but reliable and rewarding.
Hated her class. Very montone in lectures and did not clarify when asked. Rude to students who asked for help as well as extremely unfair grading. She never allows the use a calculator and graded on format, but was never clear on what she wanted. Got F on every test b/c of that. on Far too much hw, spent more time getting it done than learning it.
Mrs Somes is Wonderfully stern but fair. She lays on the homework pretty thick, but understandably. If you're struggling with any part of the course she makes herself easily available for help. This instructor wants you to succeed, but you really do have to put in the work.
She did not try to meet my needs as a student. She has an unpleasantly stern attitude. She was not understanding to my severe family issues I had throughout the term or how I never really had a strong foundationgood experiences with math as an adolescent. I ended up taking this course with another instructor name Katie and she was awesome.
Very surprised to read the negative reviews. I thought she was excellent! A tough teacher and grader but it forces you to work hard and really learn the material. Clear lessons, with helpful work sheets, she was always helpful and available. I learned so much, and improved in math a lot. I took her two quarters in a row and wished for more!
Yes, there is a lot of homework, about 100 questions a night, but all of the work she assigns is in the answer book. She gives out handouts that clearly show the material. She is a great instructor for students unsure of their mathematics capabilities, since she goes over anything you are unsure of. She is also very accessible outside of class.
If you are a grownup and serious about learning then this is the instructor for you. If you want to text during class, show up late, and not participate then you will not enjoy her class. She is very clear and kind when presenting information and has expectations that are not hard to meet. I had anxiety about math, but she helped me succeed!
Really patient instructor. The homework is nothing more than what you would experience in most classes. The home work helps! Participation and attendance count, but your given an opportunity to have one homework dropped, along with some other drops your allotted, if needed. I recommend this math instructor.
She has high expectations, and this shows in how she grades quizzes and tests, and how she assigns homework. Homework due weekly, and it usually covers 3 to 4 sections. She gives weekly quizzes, which she grades like exams. I don't recommend her because she made the class much harder than it needed to be, and 200 level math is hard enough as it is.
Great instructor! I liked how organized this class was, and the expectations were made clear from the beginning.
Midterm and Final exams together count for your total grade. I had a solid A in this class, for whatever reason I didn't do well on her two exams, which were so heavily weighted that I failed the class, even with a 96% prior to. Never missed an assignment, never got less than a B on a test or quiz. Good luck if you choose Ms. Somes!
Very good online class. Prof. Somes is great at breaking things down in her videos and was VERY responsive to emails and questions. She also set clear goals which made weekly homework much easier.
I would recommend Professor Somes because she did an amazing job of making the material accessible and understandable for me. She did her best to answer all questions in a thorough manner, and was able to keep the class on track. Her handouts were so helpful.
Virginia has incredibly high expectations and is clear on this from the start. If you plan on moving forward in your math career she'll be great for you. If it's the end of the line for you then not so much. Very tough grader, and her teaching style caters more to traditional learning styles. Talking to you Lib Arts kids. Does not accept late work.
Shes not out to get you but she out to make sure people pass her class understanding the material taught. I received a D and it ultimately made me a better math student. Some people take he grading really personally and sometimes her high standards can be frustrating. However she is definitely a wonderful teacher.
Virginia has high expectations, which some people seem to think is a bad thing? Her lectures are clear, and she provides access to many resources for alternative ways to learn each concept. She answers questions clearly and promptly and has ample office hours. I _really_ hate math, and her class made it bearable. Very approachable and caring.
This was the first math class I've taken in my life that I didn't hate. Great teacher, well run and planned course. I liked that the discussion posts were not as involved as some other online math classes. I liked having recorded lectures that I could pause and replay.
The instructor did a great job in helping me understand the concept behind a math problem. I am more confident in applying these skills to my future math courses.
The instructor communicated very well with her students about assignments and due dates. She was well organized and genuinely cared about her students success. I liked how we weren't rushed to learn the material. The instructor used her time very wisely and included group, class and individual activities.
This was a very straight forward math class and the instructor was very detailed throughout the process. She gave great examples and went over math problems with us at a slow and precise pace, allowing us to ask questions as we went along. You could tell that it was really important to her that we understood what was going on in each problem.
I was apprehensive about taking this class because I am not the best in this field. Virginia made this class a good thing! She was able to help me when I did not understand. I enjoyed the enthusiasm that Virginia brought to class and her ability to explain things in terms that I could understand.
Most thorough professor Ive had at PCC! The instructor explained concepts very well and went above and beyond to meet students where they were this term and provide ample opportunities for tutoring and guidance.
Amazing teacher, she cares and will help explain when you get stuck.
Virginia is a great professor, she holds office hours frequently for help, and she is great at clarifying things. I hate math but she made the learning experience wonderful! If youre taking remote classes and you need a math credit take her!
Professor Somes is a really great teacher. Not just in her ability to explain concepts clearly, but also in her gentleness and willingness to help when asked. She even helped me work with a review problem while we were waiting for the exam to start. You can tell she really cares about the success of her students.
Professor Somes is approachable and easy to ask questions, she explains things clearly and always seems happy to elaborate further if you need her to. There was quite a bit of homework, but she provides you with some late passes and even offered more to people that needed them.
This is the best math class I’ve ever taken! Great teacher, great, clear instructions, I really enjoyed this term. I thought it was a generally manageable workload, and overall felt like it did a good job of clearly communicating the methods for doing the math involved.
Somes is very friendly, helpful, and offers countless resources to actually learn the content. She is a very rare instructor that puts in the time to make sure all her students have equal chances of success.
Absolutely amazing teacher! I found the content of the course really interesting and fun which I did not expect from a math class. It was a very clear class and we were given countless opportunities to ask questions.
Virginia Somes does NOT care about accessibility whatsoever in her class and gives far too much homework for someone who's supposed to be teaching at a school dedicated to making education accessible for *everyone*. She expects 15 hours of work from her students per week and writes condescending emails to students trying to ask for accomodations.
Terrible instructor, does not at all care about accessibility or fairness.
She's awful at teaching, and unlike others in her department, doesn't allow notes during tests. If you work any jobs outside of school, BEWARE OF THIS TEACHER, she is NOT at all forgiving or mindful of other classes or responsibilities outside of this class. She literally told me she expected me to basically think of this as an extra part-time job
Great class and instructor. Very clear about due dates and assignments. Exams were representative of homework and review problems. The instructor was available outside of class to help with any questions. Extensions on due dates were available. If this wasn't the last math class needed for my degree, I would love to take more classes from her.
The instructor explains everything in detail and is very helpful.
This instructor cared about my grades, my tests, and what I was doing in the class. She gave very good feed back on every assignment and was very helpful throughout the term.
The instructor is very helpful and good at explaining things when you're confused. She had office hours in Zoom before each class and would help me with homework questions when I needed it. I highly recommend this class.
The course was very well organized and the teacher was responsive to questions I had about the homework. She was very understanding when a personal matter came up. She worked with me to complete some assignments after the due date when my grandmother died.
Instructor was responsive and helpful and course expectations were very clear.
She gave us clear instructions about how to study, how much study, how to prepare for exams. She is a great instructor. I liked her class videos and exam materials because very clear, organized, and easier to understand.
Instructor was super helpful! She responded to email questions quickly and met me in Zoom multiple times to go over problems from the homework.
By far my favorite math teacher ever. She is engaging, kind, clear, and accessible. To be honest, I didn't read the textbook once and still got an A because the time in her class is used efficiently. This will vary for everyone of course. If you're bad at math like me but need a class for credits, take Virginia! I wish she taught more classes!
The instructor is very patient with questions and always responds really quickly to emails. There is lots of practice work and instructional videos to help the students understand the work. The class expectations were very clear and explained ahead of time. Reminders were given regularly regarding upcoming deadlines which was very helpful.
I have never had a better Math teacher in my high school/college life. I truly felt supported, welcomed and I enjoyed coming to class. She clearly explained the concepts. Great instructor!
Virginia was very good at clearly explaining complicated topics and giving multiple examples so they could be understood. expectations were clear and was fair. positive discussion environment and approachable.
Great class! I've never understood or enjoyed a math class before this class. She is very helpful and considerate and lectures make a lot of sense. There is a fair bit of work in this class but that is to be expected with a math class.
Excellent instructor! Clear explanations and perfectly organized materials. She's the first math instructor I've had at PCC who actually creates and uses all of her own stuff -- videos, module outlines, and tests. LatePasses available for every MyOpenMath section and ample study time for tests. She's straightforward and low-key. Highly recommend!
I took math for a requirement. You print out your own chapters to fill out while watching lectures before every class. She does not teach in person but rather does activities/worksheets/2 exams in person. Homework all online. Optional final. Felt more online than an in person class. But overall Virginia was nice, caring and very well organized!
Virginia was a really great teacher who helped me learn and understand the course topics. I enjoyed the flipped module of teaching which involves watching the lecture before class and then filling out the note packets. It's easy to pass the class as long as you study and Virginia is the best math teacher I've had so far.
She cares about the wellbeing of her students an wants them to succeed. Very knowledgeable about the concepts and teaches them well. I like how the class was structured, with lecture videos and homework.
Professor Somes is an excellent math instructor. Her clear explanations, organized materials, and availability for questions make the course engaging and accessible, even for those who struggle with math. I found Unstuckstudy and the free course textbook very helpful for study prep.
I liked that all the information in the class was very practical and used it directly in my life as we were learning about it. Prof Somes was great about answering my emails. Any time I had a question even on one problem, she was fast to respond and helped me understand the question before moving on in the unit.
Virginia made everything very clear and I especially liked the backwards learning where the lecture is homework and we get to do the in-class activities and work with people around us. That class style is a lot more engaging.
I liked how Virginia gave us multiple reminders and suggestions about upcoming assignments and about how we have late passes to help us not be too stressed out about turning in all of the assignments on time.
Very Helpful!
Virginia was a great instructor! Not too often do you come across math teachers that are nice. She was flexible and understanding and TRULY cares about her students and you can tell she loves her job.
This class was a pretty easy math I liked it. Virginia is also really helpful and kind (Also lets you turn things in a little late with full credit) As someone who has struggled with math, she does an amazing job at explaining it. I would also like to mention that the exams are the easiest things on the planet. This class is great.
As someone who hadn't taken a math class in years, this class was 100% what I needed. Not only was the work easy to follow, but it's real world math that I have already used in my everyday life. The video lectures are incredible and MyOpenMath is so useful. I would recommend this class time and time again!
