pretty helpful...but she just read off of her slides. she has a good sense of humor though, so it's not boring...but her tests are kinda hard. just come to class and study...and you'll be fine.
I dropped after 2nd test. She reads from PowerPoint, goes too fast. No homework/quizzes, grades based only on impossible tests, w/questions on tiny details. When all 100 in class were failing, she lectured for 20 min. on our ungratefulness! If you're not a science major, avoid her like the plague!!!
Her lab class is always interesting and she is very laid back. Quizzes every week and the practical will kill you. Don't take her for lecture but take her for lab.
She is a fun lab teacher to have, she lets you do your own thing and she has the funniest stories and the cutest laugh. However, there are tons of quizzes and the practicals are HARD! but if you bring some pizza/food/whatever she normally drops the quiz and lets you eat instead. Study hard, it will help, if you don't, good luck1
I thought General Bio was supposed to be way easier so i bombed my first test. Later I began to read the chapters and fill out the pre-lecture notes, and study and did a lot better. Her tests are incredibly difficult, but if you study the material youll do fine. She's also really funny. It's not the type of class youd fall asleep in. Good luck!
Be intimidated because she has a good head on her shoulders and she is tough.
man thats a long class makes things from lecture clearer through practice and experiment
Awesome teacher! If you do poorly in her class it might be because you have an extra chromosome!!! She's so clear it makes every test so easy. She's also the hottest teacher on campus...nice boots!!!
she makes the labs interesting. Enjoys when students bring in snacks for each other and makes labs fun.
Dr. White kicks ass. She is a great teacher who makes class fun even though the material IS difficult. You won't regret taking this class (unless you're an idiot, which really isn't her fault).
This teacher is the best one so far. She teaches good, even though she goes too fast its easy. She makes the class go by quick though. You wont get board in her class at all. SHe makes funny jokes and tells her about her life.
i would not take her she is too hard on her testing.
great professor, she really knows her stuff inside and out. as long as you go to class and take notes you will pass with no problem. and if you are falling behind talk to her. she's really understanding and is willing to help.
great teacher. i actually when to class because i enjoyed her so much. Easy stuff and made the class fun with all her stories. I took her for Health and like her so much i took her again for Bio. she's a great teacher
I'll admit I messed up by not studying, but Dr. White is a great teacher. She knows what she's talking about and she's very helpful. She provides studyguides prior to the tests and she never tests things not mentioned in class. She's funny and cute and I loved going to class.
Outstanding professor, would highly recommend to anyone. Had her for lab only...wish I had taken her for lecture as well. She was very helpful and she is very passionate about the subject. She made Biology interesting and fun, =)
GOES TOO FAST STARTS OUT NICE THE IS HARD
very hard teacher if you haven't had any bio class in years, like me. Fast pace teaching!
Fabulous. You have to work hard and study, but she covered material that was relevant to the course and generously provided information that would be covered in her exams. Also, she has a very funny sense of humor.
Very hard class, unless you are good in Bio. Her tests are extremely hard, she is helpful tho if you talk to her, one has to study hard to pass this class. She is very lenient on final grading, a lot of times she curves the final grade which helps the students. Good teacher if you can come to class and pay attention
She is a very difficult professor to have for a basic science class. I do not recommend her to students who are not heading in a science or math field. She uses power points for all of her lectures and basically reads off of her power points. Her tests usually covered subjects that were not covered in class or random things that she likes. Very challenging.
I mainly came to class just to see her. She is a good teacher and likes to post her notes on the internet, but if you dont read your book as well, you will do poorly on her tests. I would of got an A if i came to class more than once a week, but i still got a C.
VERY challenging, but great class. The class will definitely push you to study VERY hard, but will totally pay off for the exams. Dr. White is dedicated to her students and is always willing to discuss & clarify the material with great patience. Keep up with the syllabus schedule because it's a lot of material. The class will broaden your thinking.
DO NOT TAKE this class if you are looking to pass Biology. It is interesting at times but too difficult for those who just need the class for general education. She is nice to talk to at times but take someone else like Dr. Smith. Much easier I hear!
The class is great for those majoring in a related field. For those who aren't it is the most boring class ever. The material is way too complex for a bio 1 class. It should be much more basic. The tests are ridiculously hard.
Quote of the year " wow. the class average on the last test was 52%, thats my highest ever" If you know your students are not doing that well. maybe you should do something. She creates BORING presentations& then tests you on things that are NOT even part of the lecture. She talks about herself all the time and her class sucks! dont take her!!!
This is definitely a class for those majoring in health. It is hard class. She wants you to remember EVERYTHING.
At first the class seems daunting but at the end you realize you actually learned something and got a good grade but it is a lot of work. However, an hour class does seem like a year... it gets boring at points as she just shows you slides and talks.
If you are thinking about taking her Monday evening class I would highly recommend avoiding it like the plague. Professor White is nice enough, but if you are not a Biology major don't take it. The evening class is three full hours of her reading from a power point presentation. She also expects you to take notes at light speed.
If you need a "teacher", avoid this professor at all costs. She is smart, but DOESNT teach. Time would be better spent reading the textbook in a room rather than attending her lecture. If you NEED an "A" dont take her.
It has been a horrible experience. She gives no assignments, just exams that cover numerous chapters at a time, and since its impossible to remember EVERY DETAIL ABOUT EVERY THING your grades will suffer. I dont think she cares if people pass her class or not. She would rather power trip and brag about something that the rest of us find useless.
I took here in Spring 2008. She is very helpful if you ask for help. Reading the textbook is a must if you want to pass. Her test are challenging. The final was very easy. I got an A! A lot of people complain that she is too hard, but it's probably because he or she did not read the textbook or waited until the last minute to study for the exams.
She has a cool personality and makes her class very interesting, however, she does assign plenty of projects.
I thought it was AWESOME when our first class scored an average of 38 on the first exam. YES i said 38.
All of what is written is true. She is very hard and expects for you to know everything in the textbook. But she gives you her notes, has office hours for tutoring, and goes above and beyond to make sure you understand. It is a very passable class. JUST STUDY, STUDY, STUDY AND GET TUTORING HELP!
She is a great professor, i think if you just dedicate yourself to studying and go to her office hours she will certainly help you...I usually studied two weeks prior to the test and i did fine, howeever i do admit that so far it has been the most challenging class i have taken at RCC.
she is a really nice professor but she was super hard and her class was really hard to get into
This is one of the most egocentric instructor's I have ever had. She designs her test to be purposefully misleading. She doesn't cover at least 20% of the material on the test. I'm a A's and B's student and I personally felt this class was not worth the time of day.Final analysis: She is not interested in the success of her students. Avoid.
I must agree. In all fairness, she doesn't have much of a clue how to teach. She lectures for most of the class and what's audacious is that her test have NOTHING to do with the lecture! Imagine that. Her test are multiple choice, which is cool. What is not is that she *intentionally* misleads you with confusing options. Avoid her for your life.
Dr. White is very passionate about biology. You can tell she worked hard for her degree, but at times it can be frustrating. Why? Because her expectations are high. One thing is for sure: SHE IS A GREAT TEACHER. Very organized, explains things clearly, and is humourous. A passable class but alot of work need to be put forward.
Virginia White is smart but terrible at teaching. Her exams are ridiculous, she cover like 4 or 5 chapters on each exam and she purposely tricks her students on the answers. She doesn't give a rats ass about students success and she can be terribly rude. Avoid this class especially if you need at least a C.
I am passing this class with flying colors. All you have to do is READ THE BOOK. A lot of people think they can get away without the book, you can't. Read the book, check out her notes. In class she just summarizes what you read just to help understand it better. But you better believe she will get the hard questions from the book. Don't be lazy!
very hard class
Dr. White is nice and sweet, but there are better bio teachers at RCC. Her lectures are incredibly boring and pointless, she literally reads every slide off the screen and that's it. Her study guides do not actually cover what is on the exams, its kind of a mystery what you will actually be tested on...
She Makes Class So Fun Much and Intresting. its Hard Material That You Have To Learn! you need to Study!!!
Wonderful teacher! Her lectures were clear, covered the material for tests and were interesting. I never used the book once and got an easy B by paying attention in class and a little studying of the material she posts online. She is a no BS teacher.
Clear, funny, and easy on the eyes. Take her class to make health science less boring.
She was great. Don't ever use your laptop or talk to your neighbor. She will come after you. But also very nice, and pretty hot.
Dr. White is a GREAT teacher with a great personality and sense of humor. I don't know what the people complaining expected from a Bio class. YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK. Hard class but you will be fine if you study.
Dr. White is a great teacher. one thing is for sure... if you dont study a minimum of 10 hrs per test you can forget about a C net alone a B or A. Test are all about her Power points. Just make sure u answer and know every single question on the reviews she posts and ur a sure bet for a B.
Dr white was extremely helpful. Her lecture is very plain and simple and you only need to read the book if you need more details on a certain subject. Email her, visit her office hrs, and show up to class and you'll do fine. Just be prepared to know EVERYTHING she lectures about.
Do not take this professor!! She wants you to know the entire book cover to cover ....
If science is not your strength, do not take this class if you are not willing to put in the wk. I nearly died in this class! DO NOT TAKE IT IN THE WTR OR SM TERM - it is too short amt of time to cram EVERYTHING in. She will test you on EVERYTHING. The professor is not tolerant of rude, immature students. Otherwise, she is very approachable.
Dr. White is an awesome professor. She lectures with powerpoints that are based on the textbook. She's always willing to answer any questions and makes herself very approachable. Anyone who complains about her is simply lazy; hello folks, this is college level biology, of course hard work needs to be put in to get a good grade.
GREAT TEACHER! Be prepared to do work though. Her test are based on her powerpoints (which she posts on her website). But if you aren't a studier, you won't pass.
She is very helpful and will answer all your questions be prepared to study and know the material.
This is a very easy class if you pay attention in lecture and read the book. The tests are from the lecture and book. Some pretty funny discussion go on as well. Great class. Reminds me of the teacher from the movie "Freedom Writers".
Wow, talk about an intense course. Although hard work is necessary, Dr. White is an awesome and knowledgeable professor who explains the material clear as possible. As far as lab, each session was rather interesting and hands on and ties completely with whats said in lecture. Would recommend:)
Very difficult class. I would not recommend taking her class if you are taking a full load. Last semester very few people pulled off "A"'s. She is a good instructor though, but unless you plan on majoring in ecology/population biology I wouldn't recommend.
Lots of studying but everything on her tests is from her powerpoint, which is on her website. Bio 1 is not easy anyway but she makes it understandable and interesting
She is a tiny corn-fed beauty with a little kick......oh, and she is a good professor too.
Super hard class, but with a LOT of studying and i mean a LOT you can get through it. i passed with a C. barely! ex. cr. in lab, and pass your lab quizes! because passing lab will give you a better grade! got c's on all my tests but i studied my ass of. flash cards are your best friend. and she is very helpful! dont get behind! and read the book
Difficult class requiring reading before class and after class. Love the fieldtrips and made some great friends in the process, though we bonded through the struggles of the class. Nonetheless she is fair. And hope the class does well in the weekly quizzes cause she will get moody. To pass, just read read READ the book and lecture notes.
She has a steep learning curve, you must conform to her very high expectations in order to pass. You will work harder than you did in Bio 11. She required some field trips which were alright. She is a great professor, though. Also, her giggle is ridiculously adorable.
She cannot teach. Just stands in front of the class and speeds through the slides. Also she dosnt care if you do well in here class. Think one time she actually gave a hint of something being important. This class covers alot of information and its impossible to be prepared for her tests as they cover everything and the questions are misleading
This class is great for preparing you for upper division coursework, and will give you a great idea of whether or not graduate school is something you should pursue. Dr. White has very high standards, but the level at which she expects you to perform will set the tone for your future academic success. She's also super helpful, and a stone cold fox!
she is a great teacher, but people who think that just taking notes in lecture will help them pass tests are sorely mistaken. she gives a study guide before every test, but reading the book is the only way that you will pass. she gives a lot of fun facts though :)
Very tough course but great for preparing you for your upper division. Her labs were unique since she allowed for exploration. She does have a quiz weekly and is a harsh grader on papers. Talking to her in lab seems pretty intimidating. She is normally the only one teaching this class so good luck and do not take physics or O Chem with this class.
Would highly recommend taking this class with someone else if at all possible. She allows for no electronics in class, insists you take notes with pen and paper, does not provide her power points, and goes through them at such a high speed it's impossible to keep up. She also is very vague about her expectations yet demands extreme details on exams
Lectures are 2 hrs long with no breaks and they are boring! She sits in the corner and reads what's on the slides. If she's not doing that then she's suggesting "alternate career options" because she thinks all of her students are too dumb to get into med school. Condescending and rude! I would say avoid her but she's the only one who teaches it!
She has great analogies that make the material relatable. Lecture is where she tells you important material to study. You can use any bio book to study. Posts lectures and study guides online. DO NOT TRY TO TEXT IN CLASS. She promises to give a quiz if that happens. If you miss <5hrs, she replaces one midterm with final if it helps your grade.
Some make their teaching subject inspiring with personality, style, and knowledge.., I grew distanced to biology 1 here. So many restrictions and threats. The class is designed to perfectly nurture smart 5 years old to become future sciencetists, not college students who wants to earn a good grade but doesn't want to be in the healthcare field.
She is an adorable, funny and kind person... in class. During her office hours she is rude, degrading, and arrogant. Grade is based only really on exams and she grades on a curve. There is no home/ class work to balance things out and there is only extra credit for lab (not in lecture).
She is a funny, sarcastic and real person. She gets straight to the point and is specific on what is necessary for the exams. Exams are hard and worth your entire grade basically, but she provides her exact lecture powerpoints and helpful study guides online. Overall, hard class that I underestimated. But you can succeed if you work HARD!
Where do I start? I took her class fall 2013. What you study in class and on your own will not be on the tests. 75% of my class dropped. Apparently it happens each year and she finds it humorous. To pass, you must already have a high knowledge of biology. I'm an A and B student, and I had to drop. Try classes at Moreno Valley campus-might be better
This class gets your mind ready for a higher way of learning. She is really good at teaching, just wish she would allow us a copy of her slides. I felt like i spent most of the time writing down her notes than actually listening. Be prepared and have a group of classmates to study this will help a lot.
To succeed in Dr. White's class you must take it seriously from day one. She gives you everything they need to succeed, but she leaves the work up to you. Lecture notes and test prep are posted online consistently, but if you aren't willing to spend the outside time studying then you will not pass. If you want the grade, be ready to work for it!
I hate her. Avoid her class with all cause. Even a study group isn't good enough to pass her class.
Dr White is fantastic. The class is pretty hard, but if you take notes and read the book you will do fine. She is extremely helpful in office hours. I did not like biology until I took this class. It was a lot of work, but you learn a lot of great stuff.
She needs to change to be a better teacher. She discourages her students. There is no mercy in this class. Many times you will end up with zero point because of small mistakes. She doesn't care how much time you spent. Her exams are long and tough. Many A students dropped the class. Don't take bio 12 with her. Don't ruin your time and GPA.
It was a good class, a bit of work but hey, this is college, you should be up to it.
The class average on the first test was a 45 percent. This is a direct reflection of this teachers unrealistic approach to teaching. You will feel like you are taking stenography not Biology. Expect her to shout and slammed her hands on the desk. These escapades or tantrums make for a very uncomfortable learning environment. A no go teacher!!!
She is very smart but very difficult. It may be the way she teaches but I think she can do better!
Expect to do a lot of work for this intro class. I would not suggest working full time and going to school full time with this class on your registration list. I'm sure it's completely possible to pass with an A, but there are other BIO 1 classes you can take without the stress this one will bring on.
Dr. White is fantastic. She is always willing to help students who ASK for it. You have to be willing to put in the work. Study, study, study. Dr. White and Dr. Herrick are the reason i do so well in the upper divs. Learn from them and you will do well in your future classes.
Virginia White is one of the best teachers I have ever known!! Shes helpful she loves her job and her students. Shes very strict. She puts 100 percent and expects the same from her students. Bio is a difficult class and if u not serious skip it because its like having a part time job!! U will learn a lot when your done though!!
This was the worst bio class I've taken. She has long lectures and assigns way too many chapters for one exam and expects you to know every little detail from the book or you won't pass the exams. Luckily I didn't have her for lab. She was a little easier on the final but I still barely passed with a D and I read the book and took notes. Super hard
Dr. White is awesome! She is passionate about her work, funny, and really tries to explain each subject in a way that is memorable. I asked for help multiple times and she was very reassuring and helpful. Her tests are hard and you do have to study but it's so worth it.
took in the winter, it's tough but she's there for you and you have to study to understand then again several students didn't do well in lab and lecture and where handed C's just like the students who deserved their grade. Take in the winter and just show up she'll probably give you an undeserved C is the impression I get. Sad for education
Exams are tough, but she gave generous extra credits
Mrs White is a great professor, she makes you learn the material. I was a very tough class for me, but I never took a biology class before so everything was new for me. It should not be hard for students with basic biology knowledge. I passed with a solid C and I still think it was a great class because I learned so much about life.
Dr. White is great! She really knows her stuff and has a great sense of humor. Stick to her powerpoints, they are not generic, they actually have useful information. You do not need to stick your nose in the book 24/7, just use common sense mixed with what you learn from the powerpoints.
Honestly this class was the hardest class i've taken hands down. The class average on all the test never surpassed a 50% and honestly if the majority of the class is failing what does this speak about you as a professor? I studied my butt off for this class but dropped in order to save my g. p.a which I've worked really hard to keep high.
She doesn't help anyone understand the material at all. She bounces here and there during lecture and rushes through the material. Yet she wonders why a good majority of her students are flunking. I would not recommend her to anybody unless somebody likes going fast and can memorize every single word from the lecture.
Prof. White is great! She's a Marine Biologist, so don't be fooled by your poor grade. She knows her stuff and makes sure you think your doing fine in her class. I received a D... A bit disappointed since I went to every lecture, & even worked over 10 hours in her Community Garden showing up at 7 AM for extra credit. I guess I'm just not smart
She makes you work for your grade but if you are dedicated to learning then you can do well. She has high standards and a good grade is meaningful in her class.
Loved biology before I took this class!! If the entire class average is below a 50 percent maybe it is not the students but the professors fault. Would never recommend this professor to anyone. If you do take this class, study a lot, make sure you have no outside life when youre taking this class because your life will be this class.
Dr. White is one of my favorite professors at RCC. Her lectures were organized and interesting, and she relates funny stories from her experiences to the material. She really encourages students to become better biologists, and gives excellent feedback. Weekly quizzes give good prep for what will be on the test. Not an easy class, but interesting!
Dr. White is an amazing professor. She really pours into her students. You do need to work for the grade but she is always available to talk to and she really does try to help her students succeed.
I have a quizlet with the whole BIO5 review. Her final is accumulative and she curves your final grade. That being said: the call is HARD. You are going to have to study hard. She is an amazing person but that does not change the difficulty of the class. Tip: ask her questions and study her study guides.
Dr. White is hands down the BEST professor I've had at RCC. Her pp/ lec have ALL the info you need, there will never be something asked that wasn't said or written. She puts so much preparation into them. She's inspirational, funny, honest, & gives a crap. You'd be lucky to take her course. The class is difficult, but prepares you for transfer.
Dr. White is so nice and passionate. However, her lecture and lab exams are very very dense. I wouldn't recommend completing her study guides as most of that material doesn't show up on her exams. Study the ENTIRE lectures, including the small details. Does assign a lot of small assignments/labs that give you easy points! DO NOT SLACK OFF!
If you have a photographic memory, youll be fine in the class. If you dont, please for the love of God, stay away. Long PowerPoint overview lectures but expects you to know intricate details for the exams. If lecture/lab exam averages were all 65 and under, maybe the professor is the problem, not the students. She doesnt curve or drop anything.
If Prof White is on your list of options, pick her!! Her course is very organized and straightforward. Her lectures and exam correlate very well so there are no surprise questions. She is very responsive and understanding. Some of her work may seem like busy work, but it made me understand the material so much more! Highly highly recommend!
Lets just say that this is the first C Ive ever received in any class (honors student). She requires you to attend mandatory zoom lectures and spends an hour talking about the main points of the recorded lecture - yet none of this will ever be talked about again. Instead, her exams will consist of fine details that she said in passing. RUN.
Dr. White was an amazing professor. Her lectures were very clear, understandable, and relatable. Her class was very lecture heavy. She was very nice and flexible with due dates. Her exams correlate with her lectures so there were no surprise questions. She also provided some extra credit which was helpful. Overall a really good professor.
The lectures are lengthy so be sure to take good notes. But she posts the lecture slides online beforehand, making it easier to take notes during class. The exams consist of multiple choices and some free-write questions. She provides extra credit for attending workshops, I highly recommend doing the extra credit.
Dr. White is a great professor her class was super enjoyable and fun to be in. However, the material is hard and there's a lot of vocabulary to learn. I would recommend lots of studying. She let's you turn in worksheets late but I wouldn't let myself get too far behind.
She's a great person, but this class is very hard and that's coming from a staight A honors student. I studied a lot and only barely got an A. This class is for those who want to learn. Exams are very specific. But she is kind and is willing to help, at the end of the semester though I had gotten an 89.07 officially, she finalized my grade as an A.
You'll need a lot of self-discipline for this class; lectures are all lengthy and online. Labs are interesting, but exams were the worst - specific questions requiring specific answers. Spend more time on flashcards instead of taking notes. She is a friendly professor (other than the two emails I got) and clearly passionate about the subject.
Wonderful professor. She is very lenient & allows late work (for full credit), offers extra credit, & quizzes are taken in 2 parts- individual and with a group (2 scores are averaged or best kept). Hilarious & very down to earth. Lecture heavy- don't fall behind! 3 field trips. Our class had a close relationship with her, she rly cares ab students!
Dr. White is an amazing professor. She really pours into her students. Her lectures are great. You don't need to get a textbook, her lectures and powerpoints are enough for her exams. She does give weekly homework. She is approachable and will help you with anything you may not completely understand. I highly recommend taking her.
Engaging lectures, no textbook needed - slides and unstuck ai are enough. Labs are outdoors with flexible deadlines. Exams cover lecture content well. Approachable professor who cares about students. Recommended for a solid biology course experience.
her ego is insufferable
Save urself the headache and crying yourself to sleep and dont take this class or drop it while you can. Unless ur obsessed with biology and enjoy suffering thats up to u. No study guides, not helpful at all. unless ur obsessed with biology or love suffering DO NOT TAKE with her find another professor you will struggle.
I do not recommend! Graded by a few assignments. Boring lectures and not very helpful.
If you're good at memorizing meaningless details and ignoring logic, you'll thrive here. The lab was mildly engaging, but exams felt like a guessing game. She insists on Zoom attendance and participation, but somehow none of it matters when it comes to test content. Felt more like a trap than a class.
Not the worst person, but definitely the worst class structure. She's passionate about the topic — I'll give her that — but completely disconnected from how students actually learn. Exams are brutal and unrelated to the material covered in lectures. Hard pass.
The class felt disorganized and frustrating. Lectures rarely matched exams, making studying feel pointless. Avoid if you can.
my love for Dr. White is unmatched. she loves her job and her students. she has recorded lectures and weekly quizzes. everything is submitted and taken online. all lab assignments can be resubmitted for full credit. her field trips and outside lab are helpful for understanding material. lab are entertaining and interactive. provides a study guide
Cancelled classes, disorganized, angry woman. Take 61 from anyone but her. Arrogant and full of herself. For what? Errors in her materials. Fake.
