Most important class I've ever taken in my life, no he does not preach about God (Thank God), but motivates you to reach into the depths of spirituality to be truly happy.
He made class both informative and exciting. Prof. Alduri is a rarity. It is unfortunate that he is leaving Hunter.
Professor Adluri is a fascinating and eloquent lecturer (who also knows when to offer a bit of levity!). This course was unique and profoundly thought-provoking, an overview of Eastern and Western religious thought which demonstrates a common thread through various thinkers: true spirituality is realized through self-knowledge. Highly recommended.
Professor Adluri is beyond a rarity. I do not believe that I would be going too far in calling him a genius. He is extremely intelligent and knowledgable, and his course was thought provoking, informative, and enlightening. I feel privileged to have taken his course, as it was by far one of the best. This rating can't even begin to do him justice!
Professor Adluri helped changed my life for the better.
I enjoyed this class very much thanks to Dr. Adluri. I now try to apply some of what I learned to my life. If given the chance, I would take another class taught by Dr. Adluri.
interesting class, fun to take, professor very good looking and smart
Prof. Adluri really opened my eyes to ideas that I have never before considered. He gave me information that is priceless. I now look at life a lot more differently. For this I thank him. He is an excellent, and one of the kind professor.
Hands down one of the best, if not thee best professors I've had. What makes him different is that his vast intellect is equally matched by his insight and spirituality. He makes otherwise difficult topics easy to understand. His departure from Hunter is a true loss.
Professor Adluri is brilliant. His explanations and insights were thought provoking and profoundly life transforming. I continue to refer back to the material that I learned in his class and am awed at the personal transformation that has occured. I cannot express how fortunate I feel to have taken his class. I highly recommend him.
Though he has a brillant intellect he is biased on the religious views he espouses. Calling Monotheism an idiotic belief system was not one of the highlights of his scholarly religious interpretations. I love his fascination with death, it truly is thought provoking. His hair styles were interesting too. I though the aide was cool too.
If you are a serious student, and attend regularly, you learn a LOT and have fun too. His examples are illuminating and hillarious. Too bad this is my last semester here, would have loved to have taken more. His views on religion are philosophical, so if you are touchy -feely about god, maybe this might be too much for you.
AWESOME ! He knows his stuff and super helpful. His lectures got me thinking about stuff I never thought before. I am a physics major and took this course for distribution...but now I am a fan!
really good prof. really interesting, but you NEED to do the reading. he can be a bit confusing, but he is really helpful. brings in a lot of different views, but loves plato and socrates. overall really great prof. take this class
Fabulous teacher and person. He has such a nice life philosophy...take his class
He's such a wonderful professor! He's intimidating at first but his lectures make you forget all of that once the class is over. I never learned so much from one man in such a small amount of time. You really need to do the reading because he does keep you on your toes.
He is the best, made me very interested in more religion courses. Loved his class! He is sarcastic funny, you'll be laughing all the time. He made this class so relaxing but yet you learn so much. Most importantly, you learn something that will help you forever, in every way possible. Oh, he is also very cute!!!
Again, another Scholar when it comes to Socrates and Plato! He was very nice...i Personally didnt like his method of teaching but i did my work and earned a good grade....Just 1 Paper and pop up Qizzes to see if you been doing the readings. HAVE FUN!

I agree with the comment below 100% This guy carries himself in a pompous arrogant manner, but will become EASILY irritated when you ask him an intellectual question. Preaches Socrates and Plato, yet he will squirm and verbally attack you like Meletus when you use the socratic method on him, its hilarious.
I am taking Dr. Adluri's class as well. I really disagree with the previous comment. He is amazing. If you are there to learn philosophy that can actually help you be a better person and live a better life, then this is the professor for you. If you are busy trying to prove him wrong or guess his sexual orientation then you are missing the point.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! do not take if...you dislike philosophy, are close minded and get offended easily, or think you know everything because he will astound you with his knowledge and make you feel rather stupid, take him if...you want to learn a practical philosophy you can use in you everyday life that will stay with you forever.KEY=OPEN MINDEDNESS
A lot of insight in indian philosophy, you will end up with a different view towards life and religion in general.
Greatest professor ever...I left his class a whole new person with a whole new outlook on life. He can be a hard grader...but he pushes you so your understanding of religion is clearly reflected in the papers that you write. Prof. Adluri: THANK YOU
Awesome professor. Rel major here, he makes intro classes as challenging and fun as advanced classes. Totally dedicated teacher. I can't stop thinking about what he says even when reading the newspaper. Wicked humor and a lot of insight keeps you from awake and thinking.
Great approach: detailed reading of texts, lots of examples and explanation. Profesor is very helpful and knows a lot. This is one professor at Hunter I LOVED!
This was the single worst college-level course I have ever had. Professor's lectures were repetitive, unintelligent, far off-topic, and the course subjects were woefully under-taught. He was disrespectful to students, missed several classes without notice, and cancelled the last week of class and dropped second paper without notice. Total waste.
To respond to one of the comments on this professor. He did cancel the last week, but I would not understand why anyone would complain about that! He did exactley what a professor is supposed to do. He taught, explained ideas and let you wrap your mind aroudn the topics without assigning so much busy work, best professor ever
I must say that I enjoyed his class in the end, even though I was quite scared of him throughout the semester. His teaching style isn't easy to grasp, but it is obvious that he is passionate about the subject and he is always happy to help you out if you take the time to ask. He can get moody at times, but he is a wonderful speaker/lecturer.
Condescending, misleading if not downright erroneous, and rude.
A former student urged me to take his class. "Life changing," he said, half-jokingly referring to himself as a devotee. That was hardly the case. I found the teaching method to be banal, the moodiness to be indulgent, the feedback to be trite, and the money to be wasted. Refund, please.
It is true that Professor Adluri can be a bit moody at times, but that is only if he knows that the class has not read the required readings, works, etc. If you need his help and show a genuine interest, he is there to help. His classes are great and makes you think. Another reviewer had it right, the key is open mindedness.
interesting lectures....he's brilliant. attendance is necessary to do well. can be moody and assign excessive writing assignments. not much structure to his syllabus. If you want a prof who has each lecture outlined on the syllabus week by week and keeps to the schedule, don't take Adluri. Also, he can also be a bit intimidating at first...
We watched 2 films outside of class and did not discuss them at all, despite the class being called Religion & Film. Instead, we learned ancient greek philosophy. He is extremely intimidating & often moody. He took out his frustrations on the class more than once. Very difficult to understand if you're not a philosophy buff. Don't do it.
The best professor I've ever had. Does justice to Religion, and truly understands and interprets religious texts. Might seem strict in class, but he really does care. Very easy to talk to outside of class. Makes you think about, and question religion as you know it, and helps you grasp what's truly important. Tough grader, but very fair!
Dr. Adluri is a brilliant, caring, dedicated and life-changing professor. Few realize that they will meet such a person only once in their lives. He makes Sophocles, Plato, Nietzsche, Indian philosophy come alive like no one else. I am now in grad school and no one here can match Dr. Adluri either in clarity or the depth of his thought.
I disgree with the comment below. This is a course on Religion & Film, the emphasis being on a way to look at film through the perspective of religion. Dr. Adluri gave us fantastic tools to do that. It would have been easier for him to just push in a DVD and teach less, but it's a sign of his dedication that he spent so much time on philosophy.
Dr. Adluri is truly a gem. He is one of those teachers that comes into your life and you will never forget what he has taught you. A truly lifechanging event if you take his class. Yes he can be moody but do your bloody homework/readings and he will treat you well. Don't do it, well then don't go to class. Choice is yours. he is not messing around.
Dr. Adluri's class is only for people who have some knowledge abt philosophy. he is a good prof but the way he teaches is sometimes difficult to grasp. If u hate to write more than 8 pg papers, this is not the class for u! And he is moody also which makes the experience of the class even more worse!
He is possibly one of the smartest people around in our age and his class proves it. I am glad I took Nature of Religion with him.
Professor Adluri= worst experience ever!! He comes in late for class and expects the students to stay 20+ mins after class. Adluri does not want you to challenge his teachings; instead he wants to brainwash you! If he does not care for you he will not grade your work. Please take my advise and avoid taking any of his classes.
Dr. Adluri is one of the smartest that I believe that I have met. He will challenge you into thinking about the topic, until you get pissed and almost give up. You might even think he's just messin around but he's got an answer to his questions! Indeed, he's one of the teachers who you'd thank and will NEVER REGRET having encountered in your life.
I stumbled across this class. Needed it to meet my minor req. Last class of my ugrad experience. Adluri was the most challenging and thought provoking professor i have ever encountered. He makes you want to be a better student and person. Not a class for those looking to breeze through. I wish i had come across him earlier.
Great professor! Funny, intelligent, and interesting...I looked forward to every class. Very generous with his time and incredibly supportive. Does expect you to work...one major paper (12+ pages) and one smaller final paper (4+ pages), plus one pop quiz on the reading.
Rude and nasty. Cancelled class with no notice. Resorted to threats in the first weeks of class to scare people into doing the reading, even kicked everyone out of class one day. Just lectured, few discussions. Really easy grader. intelligent, but not worth it when there are so many other nicer and just as intelligent profs in the REL dept.
He is incredible. Not for the faint of heart. He not only helps your understanding of religion and philosophy, but the way you experience your fleeting existence.Intimidating and demanding at first, this is his way of affecting you.He is even receptive to privately talking to help you understand your life and direction.I am enamored by him.
Excellent professor. His random jokes in the middle of lessons keeps you amused . Only had to do two papers (6 pages + 5 pages) and those were midterms and finals. No in class exams. Very knowledgeable in his field.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you are deeply interested interested in religion and philosophy. The professor is rude and NEVER ends the class on time. He goes up to 10 minutes later. He does not use email and cancels classes with no prior notice. The course description is not what the actual class contains.Again, avoid unless your major is religion
DR. V. is full of humor and a great educator. We needed to talk about my grade for a while, since his memory is not the best. Great educator. Does not read papers, just write them from your knowledge gain in the class. The meaning of Death was excellent!
One of the most amazing, thought provoking, awe inspiring, & challenging teachers I have had in my entire life. The lessons I learned in his class go beyond the classroom, they are life-lessons that make you want to learn & grow as a person. Keep up with your reading and the few papers he gives & you will be fine. He will really open your mind =.
Not for the faint of heart or closed minded. Go to class, don't patronize w/idiotic comments, &do the work and you will be fine.Adluri is intelligent & refuses to waste his time on those who won't give him the same respect they demand. He is by far the best teacher I have ever had. I would take any & every class he teaches if I could. Never a waste
Dr. Adluri is a gem. In all of my college experience he is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had. I was in his Mysticism class, and going into, had zero interest in the subject. Afterwards, I felt englightened. He is quite intimidating and does NOT accept ANY funny business. Your whole grade is based upon 2 papers. I received an A.
EXtremely funny,I def enjoyed his class alot. At first I thought he was weird...but then I fell in love with his style of teaching. You may have to close your ears when he curses..but he only curses the "stupid" people out there.
Interesting class, thought provoking and has a lot to say about the subject. Two papers, a midterm, and a final. He is not an easy A, you have to do the work but it's worth it.
On my first day I was completely thrown off guard because the professor is nothing like I've imagined. I slowly fell in love with mad genius technique of teaching. Two papers, two exams. Take him; he'll change your outlook on life
First of all I plan on taking him again because he is a great human being and a great teacher. The reason why I wrote that his class as 'easy' is because the way he teaches, and what he teaches about is so interesting that the difficulty is not visible. I might get a B+, A-, or A, but either way Adluri is golden
Dr. Adluri is an amazing teacher and a charismatic human being. Take his classes! You will learn a lot outside of "your box". I did. Yes, he is moody at times, but very liberal and fair. He does not take attendance, but you won't be able to write your papers and pass the exams if you don't attend. ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS AT HUNTER!!!
Prof Adluri likes to be funny and will curse in class and curse again. He clearly hates Luther and protestant Christians. He has his own philosophy about things and so he will teach that and not so much what is on the book. That is why you must attend class or you won't pass. If you have an opinion he doesn't agree, he may be upset and embarrass u
Disrespectful and dismissive of ideas that he does not agree with or that conflict with his own. I do not recommend his class.
Inspiring! This is what college humanities classes should be. He uses orignal texts but relates the ideas to ones life experiences. All this with good humor.
Professor Adluri is one of the most knowledgeable professors at Hunter. He will break things down simply and engage you wholeheartedly-- the only thing he asks is that you meet him halfway and attempt some interest of your own; sprinkle this with some patience and effort and you will not only get an A but walk away with a life-changing experience.
Dr. Adluri is just AMAZING!!! TAKE HIM! he will change your life. He is a GENIUS. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well in class and life. BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
In "Nature of Religion" the Mind expands into eternity, with you, or without you. His class accepts/rejects everything, to teach that nothing is actually accepted or rejected, but simply is.
Come into this class with an open mind and you will love it. He says things that at times really affected my way of thinking in a deep way. Pay attention to what he says, not only because he says amazing things but because the exams are all short answer based on his lectures. Can seem a bit condescending and elitist at times, though.
He's funny and is a pretty good professor. However, he isn't really that responsible, in a way. He doesn't sit in the classroom when a test is given. He would leave and ask someone to sit in for him. He didn't respond to my emails. The distribution of grades is ridiculous! He also doesn't stick to the syllabus.
Adluri's one of the most knowledgeable (on Indian and European philosophy) men I've met. However, in the Indian Philosophy course I took, he regularly waste forty (or so) percent of class time talking about Medieval European philosophy. He didn't get to half the material outlined in the course description. He's brilliant but entirely unfocused.
He's teaching Hinduism but didn't teach about Yoga. Wrong (one of the six orthodox Vedic schools). But outside of that, he's a brilliant man. His lecture was captivating and his work on the Bhagavad Gita was very good (I've studied it for years). He knows incredible amounts about any and all philosophy (has an eidetic memory) and is very cool.
One of the most knowledgeable professors I've had the pleasure of taking, great lecturer. Downside: did not follow syllabus in regards to the paper assigned, did not post an official prompt, highly confusing. Learned a lot but I struggled with writing a paper in a specific point of view to portray the way he taught the material.
Probably the best 'lecturer' in Hunter College: his knowledge of the material is unmatched. He can recite entire chapters of text in Sanskrit. What's confusing is his organization. He's extremely funny and provocative. His jokes are random and hilarious, and his lectures are very compelling. The workload is not much: what you'd expect. Great class.
Great professor, I expect nothing less from the mad man. I should say a mad genius. He's memorized everything in the Hindu text and it is unbelievable. If you are a philosopher like myself, you will enjoy his lectures, the class, and its wonders. If you have questions, asks them. That's what philosophy is about; and he loves questions. Good Luck!
Um, awesome. Like golden honey and perfectly purple shirts. A little nasty though. Nothing personal. Respect. P.s. I guess I'm a witch . As Rumi says- remember to use your "wisdom nose". Etc. Peace
He is strict and talks down to you if you do not agree with him. Get ready to write multiple 10 page papers. He is also rude and sarcastic, I switched the class as soon as I got the chance.
Take him! The lectures are amazing, it might be confusing to study for the test but not hard exams. Not a lot of papers
He's very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed his class! Definitely would take him again.
Prof. Adluri is a very humorous person. His lectures are not at all tough but makes you think your own way. Heavy discussion in class, try to participate. Books bought were rarely used. And be ready for few absents of Prof. without letting you know. Just come sit 10 minuets and leave on those days. Major grade depends on attendance so show up.
Prof. Adluri is one of the best professors at Hunter. If you want to learn about anything and everything, take him! He strays away from the syllabus (in a good way) and really enjoys teaching. To get an A on the paper, stick to his notes and views. Also, just do the readings, be familiar with the concepts and don't forget to be Oedipal!
Seems to enjoy embarrassing students? Very unapproachable overall, fell behind on his own syllabus for whatever reason then tries to make the students feel it's their fault. Insinuates nasty things about the students because we got confused due to his disorganization. Seems to have too high expectations for an introductory course.
Hands down the best Professor I've taken at Hunter.
He can sometimes be funny but is honestly one of the worst professors Ive ever taken. He doesnt care enough about the class to simply show up and when he does he releases his anger on the students. The subject is really boring and he is very condescending to opinions that differ from his. He takes forever to grade papers and tests. Dont take.
The dude is legendary.
His lectures are super interesting and you can tell he's a very smart guy, but he made us purchase around nine books for the semester and it's December and we've only read one. I spent a lot of money on them so it's a little frustrating. You can also tell he doesn't like teaching lower levels of Philosophy and it bores him.
He's a captivating, funny lecturer. We read 1 book for his class which can be found online. He can be a little sarcastic and moody sometimes but overall I loved his class and teaching. We had 2 tests (which were super easy bc he literally gave us all the topics of the qs beforehand), one 2page paper & 10page paper. He's not a hard grader at all!
I wouldn't recommmend anyone take his class because his lectures are very vague but sometimes very deep and interesting. Also, he told us that we were not going to have any exams in this class and only a 15 pages paper. But only one class before the exam, he told us that we would have an exam which would be considered as the final. Unexpected!
I love this man, so much. He is so funny and he makes all of his classes so interesting. I would definitely take one of his classes in the future. Overall, he is a wonderful person and is hilarious! Just amazing.
Overall he's an amazing teacher but he didn't follow the syllabus and would just throw random work at us. He's very funny and kind. ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS, he loves it!
Professor Adluri is super passionate about philosophy and makes a lot of jokes, which is always fun. It is important to have the reading materials prepared and as long as you pay attention and take notes in class, you have nothing to fear. He may seem a bit intimidating first but asks a lot of questions that are rhetorical yet thought provoking.
Without a doubt, the most intelligent person you will ever meet. He will challenge your beliefs. He will challenge your skepticism. Wherever you are, he will show you the world is not as simple as so many dismissive commentators and pompous ideologues would have you believe.
Adluri is an amazing professor. He knows his stuff and is extremely passionate about it and will make you feel the same way. Assignments are mainly to keep up with the reading, along with a project and an exam. Don't just neglect the reading because there's no written assignments, it's worth keeping up. Would highly recommend to anyone.
only 1 assignment that we were graded on, 12-page paper or a presentation. he is so disorganized, told us this two weeks before the due date. will drag on after class has ended to talk about crucial assignment details, in favor of using class time for shallow lectures/discussions about white aesthetics that *will not* help you write your paper.
Good professor, passionate, interesting, cares about students learning. Very easy going. HOWEVER. Very disorganized, NEVER answers emails, crucial ones too. No feedback, vague grader. no returned work. Come to his class you wont regret it, but be ready to push his laid back attitude to a corner or grade will suffer. I wish I was more annoying.
Knowledgable and interesting professor but he was extremely disorganized. Students had to hound him for clear instructions on the *one* paper we were assigned. He has a good sense of humor but he could also be very inappropriate. Class discussions were lacking because he prefers the sound of his own voice. All in all, not the worst, not the best.
He doesn't allow devices in class but is lenient on it if you're not obvious. You can have 4 absences max. 1 long paper due at the end and 2 quizzes. He mentions the date of quizzes 1 class beforehand so have connections or attend class. Otherwise he tries to make his class fun, cracks jokes and is lenient on grading. I found it boring sometimes tho
had him for honors seminar and aesthetics intelligent and fun. doesn't allow devices so you might need to buy a physical textbook. also very disorganized and doesn't follow the syllabus. great lectures but little room for class discussions but a nice class if you want to just listen and take notes
overall an easy class and great professor
Professor Adluri is very nice and funny and I enjoyed the course material. I do wish the class was more organized though. He didn't follow the syllabus, was vague on clear instructions on the final paper, and gave the class only two weeks to write the paper (which was 15-18 pages long). However, if you work hard, you'll be fine in this course.
