Not a great teacher. He simply cannot teach and you pretty much have to teach yourself. Plus his accent is very strong so you barely understand what he is saying.
So, it's bad enough that chemistry itself is a terrible subject, but this guy can simply NOT teach. His accnent is waaaaay too thick to understand he pronounces his z's like j's. So he'll say "jero" instead of "zero". The guy's smart and everything but he can't teach. :l Don't take this class with him. I'm probably gonna fail, honestly.
This professor is one of those smart people who know chemistry and expects everyone else to understand it to. He cannot teach at all! He explain things that has nothing to do with the test. Its basically all self learning. I suggest you pick another professor before coming across this one.
He is very vague with his explanations and does not bother to go into depth. He has no problem telling you to figure it out on your own if you do not understand a concept.. After his lectures i found myself frustrated and confused teaching myself chemistry.
Just started my CHE 133 classes with Dr. Kumar. I took CHE 100 with another professor. I am very satisfied with Dr. Kumar. He posts all his lecture notes and review questions. Always available outside the class room to help. Confident to get a good grade...
Very talented and helpful. He worked hard to help us. Had some accent. But, it was not an issue at all. Got an A.
Best teacher, not just science, I ever had. He is cute (believe me), polite and helpful. Go to his office hrs. Very knowledgeable not just in chemistry, but physics and math. Also very respectful to the students. Got an A
currently in his class. if you didnt take chemistry before. take him. he helps. i see him in office also. i startd liking chemistry.my math has become better and next test i do well.
I had chem in high school about 5 years back. So, I didn't really an intro chemistry. But just to review and hopefully go for college chem in a 4 year college. So far I like prof kumar very much. He is really a good teacher. I recommend him highly.
Good prof. Got B+. Though lot of work. Thank God I don't have to take chemistry again.
Only thing i dont like is attendance. I strongly recommend him. If you ever plan to go for a science major or premed, he is the best.
Certainly not a good professor at all. I'm currently in his class and everyone is failing including myself.Your better off teaching yourself. He expects you to already know the material and when you ask him to go over something he'll say no. I don't recommend him at all!!
This man is an awful professor, he does not explain the material well. He just expects his students to know the material. I've asked for help and forget about it it's like talking to a wall. Your better of teaching yourself. Do not rely on him for anything.
Extremely difficult to understand at times, conceptually as well as his obvious accent. I found myself extremely frustrated in his course, but at the same time couldn't help but feel bad for the guy because the majority of my class would lash out at him when they got confused. I would only suggest taking his course if you are familiar w/ chemistry.
Though I am taking his class at another college, I think he is very knowledgeble and knows what he is taking about. I took Chem 1 before so it definitely helps, but he is still food (better than the chem 1 prof<<). I am happy overall.,
This young prof is very knowledgeble. More importantly he is always willing to help. I am surprised that what others say below. Two students wrote CHE 101. He/She doesn't know what course is it (may be girl in my section who is disruptive). You can't trust their comments. To me, he is the best and I am happy of decison to in his section.
His tests & grades are very fair, just study his powerpoint notes which he posts online & you will do fine. Quizzes are the online homeworks which is easy! No lab reports required. My only complaint is that he isnt the best when it comes to answering questions so make sure you go to the tutoring center if you are stuck on a topic.
My best science teacher. Initially reluctant to take this class in summer as never took chemistry before. But all the help I receive from Prof. I am confident of doing well. Good prof.
frequent illness prevented me from attending classes. With the help I received from kumar I was able to pass the course. Best thing about him is he respects you takes teaching seriously. I recommend you practice the examples he gives in class or on his slides. Similar questions in exam. What is great is he gives you practice exams
He is a nice person & really wants to help you succeed. His power-point notes are great & home-works are easy to do online. Labs are also straightforward & fair. Just study the power-points & practice tests & you will do great. I just wish students wouldn't bully him, that's not right when he is trying to help so many succeed! Definitely take him!!
Professor Kumar is great! If you study his powerpoints & practice tests you will be fine. He is a fair grader & always willing to help you when you need it. Homeworks are online & I personally didnt need the textbook but others used it for reference. Labs always took forever but thats not a big deal considering the rest of the class is a breeze!
He is an ok professor. His explanations are very confusing. In order to pass his class, use his powerpoint notes and the test book questions, do the homework which is easy and found online his labs are really easy. The final is usually very easy and do the extra credit that he gives. He usually give u a grade better than what you expected.
Horrible, cannot teach to save his life. Whenever I asked him for help, he explained horribly. Do not recommend him !!
Prof Kumar is great. Super nice and always willing to help if needed. He posts all his class lectures online as well as practice exams. Drops lowest exam and lab grade. Just pay attention and don't miss labs and you will be fine. Highly recommend!
Dr. Kumar is horrible. I'm currently in his class. He misses class and is late all the time. He is always rushing. His only focus is to give the material which is a lot. He goes non-stop and gets confused while lecturing. I am an A student and I'm struggling. Do not recommend him even though he gives one extra credit usually a trip
He is hard to understand at time, does not seem prepared for class. His exams are very hard, the homeworks do not help, and he is not very helpful either. He is very dismissive of student's concerns and problems. He assumes that his students have more science preparation than they do, and his explanations are over the top.
Do not take his class! all of his lectures are confusing and doesn't pay attention to the students and criticizes when they ask questions. forthe sake of you and your GPA don't take him.
Worst professor i've ever had. I'm a straight A student and he destroyed what was suppose to be an easy class. Extremely unorganized, comes to class without a lesson planned. Teaches what should be simple algebra in a way that no one understands. Takes a lifetime to give grades back. Wouldn't recommend his class to the best chemistry student.
His accent makes it very hard to understand him, but you get used to it. Basically taught myself the chapters using the textbook. He takes awhile to get graded assignments back. Has study guides for the tests that are almost exactly similar. Very nice guy. If you work for it, you'll do good. Got an A.
Very unclear at times and belittles students for asking questions on fundamental concepts. The material presented is manageable if you've taken chem in high school. However i wouldn't recommend him if you've never taken chem before. Gives practice test which are a big help, overall however i wish I chose another section.
He is a great professor who is willing help you. You must study and complete all the practice exams. His tests are similar to practice exams. Good luck. I passed CHE 100 with B+
I'm taking Chem 2 in the summer and I wish I never signed up for class. U better of texting in class then listening to his lectures. My hole summer class hates him. His test are hard and his practice exam are far easier then the exams we take, which makes it hard to pass them
Never on time, very unorganized, and his lectures are awfully difficult to understand. His tests do not relate to the material learned in class. I got a B+ in the class which isn't bad, but I worked so hard for that. The only way you will pass is if you read the textbook. Avoid at all costs if possible.
Listen, even if you don't understand his lectures, read the textbook, do the hw and practice exams. HE GIVES LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT. Apply yourself, put the work in and you'll pass. Dude has a PhD, he isn't here to babysit you through the class. Work hard and you'll get an A. If you don't bother trying then don't blame him for not passing.
I feel bad writing this because this professor is very nice but I would not take his class again. He makes many mistakes and often confuses himself. He has difficulty explaining the topics and often gets the students more confused. The average grades in the class were low which is why he gives extra credit and a curve. Plan on teaching yourself.
Nice guy but confusing teacher. If your the type of student that doesn't mind teaching itself then take it because the practice exams (are given) are Very similar. Lots of extra credit and don't be afraid to speak up towards him. Seems like he cares.
He gives plenty of extra credit quizzes and extra practice worksheets. He doesn't stay late or arrive early. He also has an Indian accent. He's nice and he cares if you pass but only if you seem like you're trying. He isn't good at clarifying specific questions when asked. uses PowerPoint so there's not much note taking.
Listen to the lectures, read the textbook and do the practice exams, you'll do fine. He will answer any questions you have which is very helpful.
CODE RED************* DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA AND LIFE!!!!
This teacher was awful I would highly recommend staying away from his class. He speaks very quietly, no one in the class was able to hear him while he lectured. I couldnt understand what he was teaching even when he tried to explain it to us. He arrived late multiple times and he just seemed like he doesnt care about his job.
A super nice guy but he's too smart for his own good & doesn't know how to make things more understandable for his students. He's VERY soft spoken & almost seemed intimidated by his own students when they spoke up about not understanding something. He gives a lot of extra credit but he's very bad at explaining things in a way they can be understood
DO NOT TAKE HIM. UNLESS YOU WANT TO END UP TEACHING YOURSELF FROM THE TEXTBOOK. contradicts himself. Gets angry when you dont understand something. hard to understand. soft spoken. does not explain things clearly.
Good.
Took over the summer, very tough class, but his lectures and power points were about as clear as they could get. If you have trouble understanding he stays after class and helps during office hours. Chem 2 is really hard, even harder in the summer. If you put in the work you will get an A. Drops lowest test and lab/
Spoke very softly that you could barely hear him. Very relaxed environment though, not a bad person. Would give freshman great advice about campus and would answer questions about majors. Must attend to pass with high grade.
He definitely made me work for that A. I did well because I read the textbook, not because of his boring lectures.
Unorganized and that takes up time from class looking for work
First year premed student taking Chem 100 and his class is easily manageable if you study. I happily ended with a 97 in the class. Just make sure to stay after with him and whoever the lab professor is. Do his practice tests (which no teachers do) and you'll do fine. I ended up being the class tutor and it was pretty fun. Study study study.
Don't take this class I REPEAT Do NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Horrible at explaining things, confusing, speaks way to low you can't hear a thing, hardly goes over anything plus tests are different than the practice test, and way more difficult. Get ready to teach your self also cheg is a must if you sadly can't get out of this class
Would never take a class with this professor ever again
He is terrible. Very hard to understand because he speaks very softly and not much is English. He grades labs very tough for no reason and does not explain anything. Almost everything on the tests you will need to teach yourself because he definitely wont. Would never take any class with him as a professor. Absolutely terrible
Excellent teacher and nice person. Easy to be misunderstood. But remember, you are not to be spoon fed. I noticed several students not trying all and expecting everything. This doesn't anywhere so why to expect with your professor? Took the first science course after several years., couldn't get B without his help. Highly recommended.
Loving him this semester. Best chem prof at Suffolk. Caring. Will give you a chance to make-up one exam and drops the lowest lab. Aiming for A..
Retaking chem 2 with Prof. Vivek kumar. My last chem 2 prof was terrible. I am glad I have kumar. unlike other prof he doesnt read from ppt. Most questions he shows on board, breaks down in steps, give analogies. Chem 2 can be very difficult or easy. Depends on how the content is presented. Kumar puts so much effort. He makes the concepts so easy
Lucky to have Prof Vivek kumar for my college chem II. He inspires you and goes over and above to help you. Though I didnt struggle in chem 1, was bit nervous. But, he makes it so simple, enjoyable and easy. Just had the first exam. Very happy with my performance. My biggest advice listen, take notes, ask questions. HW and practice exam must.
I was nervous to take Chem II and since I read bad comments on this proffessor I became more nervous. This is a challenging course!! Proff Kumar is really good at teaching the material by steps. He gives homework, practice tests, and posts extra review. Take advantage of that!! Study the material hes there to help you
Chem in a hard class. You must apply yourself. unlike the other chemistry professors his style of teaching is engaging and balanced. Great lecture notes. he gives worksheets, reviews, practice exams.. And very caring. highly recommend you take him! Will definitely take him. Amazing guy...
Inspiring teacher. Cares for you. Explains the concepts very nice.
Wonderful teacher and my best science professor ever! I couldn't have got better than a C with out his friendly approach to teaching chemistry, and helpful lecture notes. This course enhanced my interest in chemistry and science. Thank you!
Very nice. the way professor makes it so easy. I was so scared of everything. I am confident that I will ace this course.
Took Dr. Kuamr last Fall. Highly recommended. A committed and very knowledgeable prof. Few tips: 1. Ask questions. It also helps you get noticed and motivated. 2. Math, math, math.. Ready to do lots of work with numbers in this course. 3 Do homework. 4. Take practice exams professor gives before exams. 5. Keep working regularly.
Very unorganized. waited until the last day to grade everything. Talks really slow. When we went online due to covid he tried to switch the days we meet. Then he decided he only wanted to meet once a week. Which left us very behind. Causing us to meet up twice a week for 3hours the last 2wks. He gave tests and the final on days we didnthave class
I'm an A/B student. I always communicate with professors after class or outside of class when i'm having trouble understanding assignments. I tried getting one on one help by going to his office a couple of times, but when I told him I still didn't understand something, he'd just repeat it louder. He didn't explain projects thoroughly.
Doesn't explain things clearly. You have to already know the material from the textbook, on your own, before coming to class to fully understand something from him.
Professor Kumar makes simple things sound way too complicated because of his wording. He is not prepared for class and lacks class structure. He does not have a good understanding of how to navigate the textbooks and online lab materials that he assigns us. Even with a PhD he does not have a clear understanding of how to teach a class.
Professor Kumar can not teach, he makes everything confusing, when you ask him questions he just repeats himself. You will basically figure out chemistry with the help of youtube, quizlet, or brainly. I don't know why he even brought up the fact that he has PhD? you would think he can teach but yea no :) worst class.
Currently taking him for lab only and this man DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS!!!! pls do not take him if u think you will have any confusion with any of the labs and plan on reaching out to him via email, because trust me, you are on your own.
Very good experience so far!
Out of the many different things this man did to make life miserable, he NEVER fixed due dates. So missing assignments and homework was a common thing, he also likes to scream during lectures if he doesn't hear any feedback, if you dont respond to him he will take attendance, and then make you upload your lecture notes for a grade. Worst professor.
Too much work, youll spend hours doing homework! Lectures were hard to follow with his kids yelling in the background every class. Found myself teaching myself because he would barely responded to emails. Would get mad if you didnt answer his questions. Dont take the class.
Almost dropped the course due to personal circumstances. He made sure to work with me and I ended with a decent grade. Amazing lecture videos and best gen chem teacher at suffolk. Expect repeat of questions in tests.
Taking this summer. Great professor.
Professor kumar was one of the kindest professors I ever had. In the beginning he sounded bit of a strict grader. He is lenient and considerate. You just have to approach him nicely. Soft spoken with good quality lectures. I only had to do online bomework, review lecture examples, and practice tests he posts for every tests. Highly recommended.
I would like to strongly recommend Dr. Kumar for both chem1 and chem 2 as I had him for both, in partcular for chem2. He showed some of the topics like thermo and electrochem so well, I am sure it will help a lot in MCAT. You should make use of his office hours. Makes a huge difference.
I had kumar last year for my second semester chem couse. What I liked the most was individual attention and help. I had done some reading before and it was easy A for me with good lectures and how the course was organized. Prof. Kumar has deep knowledge of the subject matter. The only comment I have is some of the lab grades came late.
To sum up, a wonderful professor. I would whole heartedly recommend him for 133and 134. Thank you professor for believing in me!
I always asked questions and participated. Tests were easy, all muliple choice. Make sure you do practice tests. Super easy labs. You get multiple attempts to get the questions right. Very nice and helpful prof.
Liked it. Do the work assigned and you will be fine.
I have just started and feel confident. Great professor.
Helpful and nice.
So much homework than any other class, it's like a job or worse the amount of stuff he leaves.
Great guy! amazing lectures. I would say amount of work is the usual. Remember you are doing a science course, especially if you are taking chemistry for the first time, prepared to spend more time. Going to office hours was very helpful. What impressed me the most was this professor really cares for, unlike other who would leave you to figure ou
5 star
Best suffolk prof. My favorite. So far A. He is kind and respects you. Makes the subject easy.
I wont agree with someone who would say he gave lots of hw. Most kids in my class I found are type who dont want to work at all and think they will show up and pass. Its very discouraging for a sincere student to study with these idt kids. They r like parking 2 parking. Bro, you want to learn and earn the grade. Wonderful prof. I highly reconmended
Good quality. Recommended for gen chem.
Thumbs up
I was almost there. Extra credit on the final and one test make up made it happen. Spend few hours every week and take the practice tests serious. Great professor.
Great. I will highly recommend for chemistry subjects.
Prof Kumar is one of the best out there, he gives extra help, very accessible, very encouraging. The extra point towards final helped me pass with an A. I appreciate you Professor Kumar
Good choice, thumbs up!
I took kumar in sp2020. A solid choice.
Good professor. Practice and prepare as you go.
I took prof in Spring 20. Good experience.
He gives you a chance to make up one of the three tests. If you work little hard, getting an A is easy. Remember you are learning a new subject.
I would say I am lucky to have Prof. Kumar. He is very helpful and knowledgeable. He truly cares for his students. There is some extra credit toward the end of the course, and also test make up, that should really help.
Recenty Dr. Kumar subbed our lab. He broke it down nicely and made this seemingly complicated experiment so easy. He was very involved, moving around, helping us, thoughout our time in the lab. What a difference, so impressive! I look forward to my chemistry 134 with Dr. Kumar in the Fall.
I am taking him for lab. I think he is excellent. In the lab he shows most of the calculations and the other work. So very little to do later. In the lecture, it might be different. However, I think he is very kind and knowledgeable, someone you exactly need. That's why my choice for the college2 course.
Five stars. My fav chem teacher.
My first course at Suffolk. I will definitely recommend.
Pro: Accessible, Kind, Knowledgeable, Respectful, Takes pride in his work and your success Con: Only multiple choice based tests, some labs came late, could be louder in the class
Wow, I made it!! I bounced back from a hopeless situation. Thank you for all your help and able guidance, professor! Extra credit and opportunity to submit the missing labs was big help.
Very nice professor. Coming from another univ and taking this course in summer, must say, made a good choice. Lectures are well planned and easy to follow. He is very kind and wants you to succeed.
This is a prereq for nursing. I am so glad to have Prof. Vivek Kumar as my professor. He is outstanding, always willing to help and explains the concepts so well. The only difficulty I have is online homework, which hopefully will be better with time.
Took this class my second semester so it was pretty pointless for me
He forgets to put up submission assignments. then blames us when they weren't submitted on time. vocally penalized students that were held back by the other chemistry professor to take tests. explains things ridiculously slow and holds the whole class up when everyone could be working at their own pace. Becomes annoyed when we asked questions...
Although I love how Professor Kumar was able to explain things in an easier way, I found myself drowning in the amount of homework, quizzes, and materials he posted. He posts hour long lecture videos for a quiz grade (multiple per week) and 30-50 question HWs a lot, and I was taking other difficult classes, so his class was very exhausting for me
I genuinely have nothing nice to say. this professor is mind bogglingly boring. he also fails to explain topics well and also has a lack of care for any of his students. he feels as though we should know what hes talking about even though we have never taken the class before. genuinely turned me off of science forever
He gives a lot of homework. 1 quiz at the beginning of each chapter and a 30-40 question exit quiz at the end. He uploads videos online that are an hour long but does not talk about them in class. Lecture consists of him going over random worksheets from chapters students may not be on yet. He is very patient and nice though. Class is work heavy
He is the only professor that has videos and found them very helpful. I could watch them multiple times if needed. Doing practice in class helps consolidate the concept. Chemistry is a difficult subject and I have a good professor who cares for you. I work hard and do well.
Unnecessary amount of homework due in a short amount of time with quizzes on top of it, felt like I was drowning the whole semester. Doesn't bother to check his email, explains stuff clearly though
I wish I could give a zero. He blames you for his mistakes, doesn't respond to emails, and is very disrespectful. He makes mistakes in his lecture videos and doesn't bother to correct them even after multiple students reach out. Also forgot we had lab one day, just ran out after the lecture and had us waiting, seems lost, wouldn't recommend!!
The best way to put it: sucks, don't take him you WILL regret it, especially if you are a STEM student
Doesn't respond to emails, just expects you to know he read them, but won't answer your question? Is rude and doesn't know how to teach and he blames students for HIS mistakes. Disappointed bc I needed this class for my major as a premed, don't take him, bad for the long run.
How do I give a 0? Don't dwell on the ratings that say he is good because I did the same thing and I learned he is anything but the opposite of what they say, and I learned the hard way :(
Excellent so far. Only complain is less use of textbook. You have topics that you need to read yourself more if there are questions good thing, he is very approachable.
if you enjoy being mentally tortured and having self confidence issues because of his harsh grading then this is the class for you! :D he makes mistakes on quite literally everything he does but you must submit absolute perfection to do well in this class. if he graded his own work the way he grades us he would have a 0 in his own class.
he was pretty good. very chill about homeworks if you submitted them on time you got a 100 no matter what. tests were hard but if you put the time in to study he definitely notices and appreciates it
Possibly the worst professor in all my college years , can barely understand him and is constantly judging and downplaying your every move . Speaks for 3 hours in a lecture without interacting once until the day before the tests (without a curve) . Extremely tempered and just honestly does a terrible job at teaching overall . Do not take him !!
I found him reasonable and easy. Greatly recommended.
Had for the labs. I liked him available for help and taking the class together as we worked on the experiments. Easy grader. Got 100 % with one lab dropped.
Good aa a prereq
I took chem1 with Dr.kumar and now looking for orgo, unfortunately he doesnt teaches orgo. It was nice and I learnt a lot. When seeing some of the negative comments, I feel most from disgruntled kids, some seem just fake. As there were no assignments as being said. Could easily complete the work in the class itself and easy to get the full credit.
good work. Liked steps approach to the problem solving. CHE 134 has lots of calculations based questions. It was helpful learning this way.
I enjoy Prof. Vivek's class and already made great progress. Struggled due to not taking a science course in a long time. The lecture videos helped a lot. You can watch again and focus on the important parts. Saves lots of time because don't have to read everything from the book, this is where test questions are from.
All good. Only comment pace could be little faster..
Professor Kumar, my favorite chem professor so far, explains everything so good in detail. The homework is long, but trust me, if you do it, it will help you get a good grade on his tests. In CHEM 134 lot of the material is math-based, but this professor explains everything step by step. I wish he could teach organic.
Took this course as a prereq for another program. The homework takes a long time to complete but isn't too bad. He drops the lowest lab grade and gave an extra credit opportunity for the final exam. Also let us do one make up test. Tests were difficult but not awful.
spends too much time talking and goes too slow. thinks we need to know the entire background history of every concept. homeworks are 40-60+ multiple choice questions but we have to show all work and explain. treats entry level chem like we're PhD students. content is easy, he makes it miserable and confusing. no equation sheet for exams. horrible.
This class experience was so bad. 2 hour lecture followed by 3 hour lab, and he spends most of it just talking. No engagement besides the occasional cold call. English isn't amazing, so it's hard to understand what he's saying sometimes. Can be rude if you have a question he thinks is stupid. Incredibly disorganized. Taught myself the material.
Hes not terrible but I feel like there is definitely better professors, His lectures felt rushed, and his labs even more so. He frequently made mistakes during the lecture leading me to believe that if he took his own class he would fail. He does seem very nice, and is probably better one on one but idk. Overall, not very notable to me
