Excellent prof, very caring
I completely agree. Sharma is the Indian Physics Guru of UCSD. He's hella hot too.
Weekly Quizes are a pain, but thats how physics goes. Be ware however, although he is a fair instructor, he will get his curve when the final comes. So if your class has done really well on the quizes, watch out for the final!
NOT AN EASY CLASS, but Sharma is the best physics professor i have yet met at UCSD! you will want to attend every of his lecture if u take him
vivek is the best professor i've had at ucsd. physics 2d will make u want to WISH u weren't done with all of your physics. sharma is THE MAN. hands down. best physics prof at ucsd. he will keep u awake with his jokes! a must take course.
Dr. Sharma is the best physics prof. at UCSD. He explains the material very well and has a very helpful website with streaming lectures. His lectures are extremely entertaining. His quizzes are on the difficult side, however, and his final exam was arduous. I highly encourage you to take his class.
Sharma is a very good prof. but his quizzes are very hard in comparison to other physics quizzes in other classes. His lectures are fun but most of the learning in this class has to come from study of past quizzes.
Best teacher at UCSD period. The class isn't so hard, because he teaches the material so damn well.
prof. sharmal is the best physics professor at ucsd. He gives clear, concise examples of sample problems. He is interested in helping students with additional problems and time. YOU WILL HAVE IT MUCH MUCH MUCH EASIER TAKING HIM FOR PHYSICS!!! That's not to say he isn't hard, he's just gifted at teaching and making sense. I'm not a physics major.
He is a great guy and very helpful but lectures are kind of useless as he just goes over the derivation of the formulas (which are in the book if you're into that sort of thing). It is pretty sweet that a 75% and above is an A. That rocks. Overall, I liked this class and prof. BTW Homework can be very difficult but if you collaborate it is not bad.
hw due every week. the class is overall easy but theres soo much work. you never get a break from this class.
Very good professor overall. Explained the material well and was funny at times. HW due every week was a pain at first, but then you realize you can get the answers from somebody else....Quizzes were somewhat hard, but you get a notecard to use, and a 75% for an A isn't hard to achieve.
Sharma is the sh*t! If you read the textbook, lectures aren't entirely necessary (he actually uses a lot of the graphs and examples from the textbook in lecture) but are nevertheless enjoyable just cuz Sharma is tight like that. His quizzes can be a little challenging, but then again they're just 7 multiple choice questions. Also, >=75% is an A!
this guy is AMAZING! funny, spirited, helpful, clear! the only thing i hate about the class is the fact that we have to do all homework online and the quizes are multiple choice instead of free response, where u can get partial credit.
His quizzes, homework, and tests are ridiculously hard, but a good professor nevertheless
Oh my freaking god. Do not take this professor. His lectures are absolutely useless. Week two, we're learning the kinematics equations, and instead of doing practice problems n what not, he decides to give us a history lesson about newton, deriving where newton got the equations, and then ends with a description of what particle accelerators are.
funny guy, going to lecture doesnt help with online hw, stopped going 3rd week...quizzes are almost impossible at times and not close to hw ,,,,,,good luck it is a difficult class and it made me change majors :(
sharma definitely seems like a caring prof but his lectures are all from the book and he doesn't teach too much imo. you have to read/do hw by yourself if you want a good grade, a lot of self-learning in this class. the quizzes can be insane too...so def not easy at all to get an A, but not too hard to get a B.
sharma is a good professor, but there's no curve and all the quizzes and the final are multiple choice. The quizzes are with 50% of your grade so if you want an A you have to do well on them. Thankfully he has a fair absolute grading scale. you only need 75% to get an A. but that also means the class is hard.
Lectures are useless. His slides are directly from the book, and he only does easy examples. And ... I hate mastering physics.
This class is horrible! Useless lectures...no point in attending. Prof S. is nice but basically reads the book to the class during lectures instead of solving problems. His hw's don't reflect the hw's either so dedicate an ass load of time to this class so you can at least pass it. All self taught..not good for physics. Good luck.
I really like Prof. Sharma. However, the course material is hard, and to succeed you need to invest a lot of time in his class. If you read the book and do the homework, you will do well, just like he says.If you are struggling he has office hours and is available on Sun. He makes numerous resources available, but you still need to learn the material
You dont need to go to his lectures, they are useless, as long as you read the book and keep up with the work on time. The quizzes are made up mostly of conceptual problems, they are tricky. He is a good professor in terms of research and knowledge but his is a bad teacher
Makes the quizzes impossible and does make himself available. However, when I had two one-on-one interactions with him he seemed not wanting to help you and just wanted to get done with helping you. Avoid him if you can.
His lectures don't help much. And I don't like the textbook. His quizzes are extremely hard and conceptual. You really need to learn this yourself or get any help possible..office hours, OASIS, tutoring.. And his final is harder than the quizzes!
Sharma is a really nice guy, who knows his material really well. His class, however, has no sympathy for anyone. Quizzes are difficult, homework is hard, and the final killed most people's grades. Go to office hours for his TAs because they know their stuff pretty well, and go to the problem sessions because the TA's try to give quiz like problems.
75% is an A!!!
Decent teacher and is willing to help. Quizzes are decent but the final is really hard. I had an A going into the final but ended up with a B in the class. Needed to actually go to TA's office hours and problem solving and discussion sections. TA (Morgan Brown) is awesome!! Lectures are actually useful but many didn't show up.
OMG.. this class was extremely hard. If you know physics well, it might not be so bad. But go to the problem session even though it's usually really late, and do the homework. You don't really need to go, but highly recommended, and be sure to know what the hell he's talking about. He has some accent, but he knows what he's talking about
He knows his stuff for himself but not for other students too much.Because he uses powerpoint it makes the class boring. He gives lots of examples though and stresses doing homework problems and going to section.Had quizzes and final is super hard.Go too all the classes and ask questions in lecture or section if you can.
He tries his best to teach and you can see that he cares about the students, but he just isn't a very good teacher. All his lectures are powerpoints that put you to sleep and only have pictures from the book. The quizzes are much harder than the homework and always contain little tricks. Although he tries, he just isn't a very good teacher.
Smart, funny, and tries to help you learn in any way possible. Quizzes are definitely hard so do as many extra hw problems as you can, because he takes some questions from problems you aren't assigned...final was relatively easy.
Sharma is very helpful. Lectures are ok, he does examples from the book and skips through a lot of the lecture slides. 8 quizzes, can drop 2. (10% each) Final wasn't too bad. (40%) Problem solving sessions are VERY USEFUL - go to them! Look over sample problems and homework before quizzes, quiz/final problems are often similar.
ridiculously hard quizzes, but final had direct questions from them..
he is AMAZING. I FELL IN LOVE WITH PHYSICS AFTER THIS CLASS. HE IS FUNNY, HELPFUL, AND SO SMART. every lecture was fantastic. and yeah he is hard, and i worked SO SO HARD FOR AN A, BUT HE MAKES IT SO WORTH EVERYTHING YOU PUT IN.
Great teacher that doesn't know how to make quizzes very well. Even if you understand all of the homework problems and concepts you will still run into problems on the quizzes because he makes them super hard, avoid if you can.
Sharma is a pretty cool dude as are his TAs. Physics in general is pretty hard so be sure to do your homework and go to the problem solving sections... that's an absolute must. If you've seen enough examples and understand the ideas behind it, its not too bad.
Overall good professor, interesting lectures but not really mandatory. Cracks joked form time to time. Quizzes are hard so make sure to do ALL your homework and attend problem solving sessions. Make sure to really understand every single concept, as his quizzes can be very tricky. Study and you'll do fine, take him! :)
Great professor. Takes time to explain information, weekly quizzes can be difficult. Sharma looks even better when compared to professors who teach 2B/2C.
The average score tended to be around 50% but even that's not too bad since 75% gets you an A. As a lecturer he's much more interesting than others that I've seen thus far. Furthermore, I found out on the last quiz that you're allowed a cheat sheet, so you don't even have to memorize anything. Read the book, maybe go to lecture, and you'll do fine
class is more so how your TA grades your lab reports. professor does a pretty good job of explaining what we do in labs, but really confusing when explain the physics/equations/math needed. this class is really teaching you about error propagation, and he does an ok job at explaining. 4 lab reports, 4 quizzes, one final which was pretty difficult
Sharma is deceptive. He seems funny and intelligent, but then you find out that he is a self centered jerk who lies to the student's faces about constant quiz difficulty (the quizzes massively increase in difficulty, which is really important to know given that the class is graded on an absolute scale).
I learnt all this course by myself cuz his clarity was poor and I have to say that although he tried to pretend to be nice, he was so mean in deed. Quizes and final are ridiculously hard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT PHYSICS. Don't do it. Sharma gives HARD quizzes (except for the first 2) and a HARD final. You will soon realize that attending lecture is pointless as he isn't that great of a teacher and your grade won't improve nonetheless. If you do take this class be prepared to put aside a lot of study time.
Sharma is a good professor. His lectures are entertaining and helpful. However, his class is quite difficult. The weekly quizzes consistently increase in difficult, and the final is very hard. As long as you do the homework (not mandatory, but helpful), you should do fine in the class. Attending lecture and problem sessions always help.
He is extremely knowledgeable and knows what he is teaching. He explains the material well too, but the quizzes and the final are ridiculously hard. They are not at all representative of the homework, or the problems discussed in class or section. You end up doubting yourself so much that you overthink the few easy problems and get them wrong too.
Make sure you do really well on the beginning quizzes because the material gets harder. His final was RIDICULOUSLY hard & covered mostly the new material. Although his absolute grading scale seems OK at first, he is very tricky on his tests so watch out.
Sharma is useless. He says he is available for help but refuses to help. He is funny, but that does not help with the class. Quizzes are nothing like the homework and are super difficult. Class has fixed curve (which still doesn't help). Final was terrible. Don't take him if there is another option.
I think he is a good professor, however, his way of teaching does not fit well with my way of learning. He is very nice and funny. I understand every single concept he teaches, however, I always struggle in applying those concepts on his quizzes and final. I feel like he teaches us one thing but tests on another thing. His class is hard. Be aware!
Let me begin with, do not take this class. The quizzes and tests are nothing like the homework as said before. No matter how many times or how you do homework, the quiz and final will not reflect. The only good gradings he receives on this site are from people who already know the material prior or are just intellectual in general.
Pretend to be nice, but actually all he did when I went to the office hour is to end the conversation as quickly as possible. Quizzes are hard and nothing like the homework as he promised. Just avoid him at all cost!!
Professor Sharma definitely knows what he is talking about, and makes his lectures easy to understand - the difficult part of his class is applying this to his quizzes and final, which are all very hard.
Homework problems help, but lecture material is just sample problems from the book. The homework isn't anything like the quiz and final problems, though Sharma insists that everything on the quiz is like the hw problems he covered. He refuses to hear otherwise.
He was clearly very interested in the course material but wasn't very good at answering questions.
Avoid this guy at all costs. Quizzes are nothing like the homework. Avoid Sharma like the plague.
Make-belief that quiz and exam wouldn't be hard and the textbook can be buyback. No they are not.
Very very curt. Refuses to see another way other than his own. Can be very impatient with students. Has a short temper. Lectures are pretty much useless and as you can see from other reviews, the quizzes and final are extremely difficult. First quizzes are easy but don't get deceived. They only become harder. Make most of TAs
Quizzes are super hard. Sharma says the homework problems are reflective of the quizzes, but they are not. Skip PHYS 2A this quarter and take it with another prof. Trust me.
Textbooks and lectures are useless. Quizzes are extremely hard. Avoid him at all cost.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Never disliked a prof more. Sharma makes things unnecessarily difficult & his quizzes are full of trickshard problems that he says are easy. He doesn't realize what's easy for him isn't easy for students. Profs should teach at the level of the averageslowest students, he doesn't.
Sharma is a very bad professor. lectures are useless. Quizzes are very difficult. Most of my friends recommended that I don't take this class with Sharma, I took it because I needed the class, and I wish I didn't!!!!
Lectures are useless.. He e Just copy+paste the textbook. You would have to read the textbook and study all by yourself. The weekly quizzes are the hardest quizzes I've ever done. No matter how many questions in the textbook you solve, the quizzes are freaking hard. If he is the only professor, skip this quarter n take it next quater.
Sharma is a horrible, horrible professor. He advises us to do the homework and go to practice problem solving session to better understand the material and then he gives quizzes and tests which are not even remotely close to what he taught or is in the book. Quizzes are 3x harder and finals are 999x harder than hw. Avoid at all cost.
The weekly quizzes and the final are very, VERY hard. He's funny in lectures to keep people from falling asleep, rereads what the slides say with close to no elaboration, his slides are a mess (really hard to study from them because they're poorly organized), and he copies what's on the textbook (even the pictures) for his lecture slides.
Unless this is the only physics 2A class offered that quarter, STAY AWAY. Weekly quizzes will screw you over. Lectures are useless, you'd be better off reading the book on your own. Curve may be generous, but it's because the tests will kill you and take your soul.
He's pretty fair, and his tests are DEFINITELY challenging but doable. Sharma provides an insane amount of resources and you can tell he cares, like the problem-solving sessions, the tutorial center, and the weekly problem videos. His lectures are clear, but his slides are very messy. He is NOT as harsh as I thought. It just takes a TON of work
Avoid him at all cost. The lecture and homwork look easy but the quiz will give you a big surprise.
Lies Sharma told me: You will have no advantage if you took AP physics, The quizzes are like the homework, The final is the same difficulty as the quizzes, The discussion sections are super helpful. He reads off the lecture slides, so he's not very helpful, and although there are many resources available, none of them adequately prepare you
Sharma cares, but difficulty of the class is extremely hard. You either get it or you don't. There are many resources including OH, problem solving sessions, discussion, tutorial center. They all help, but it just depends on your ability. To put it simply, your success in this class depends on you, mainly your ability to understand the material.
This professor is funny. He tells jokes in lectures and always finds volunteers to do experiments. But his slides are not that clear and skips each of them very fast. Quizes(68) will be counted 60% into final grade. The fisrt five quizes are easy. Final are harder. But the A level is 75 (85 A+). You need to work hard after class in order to ace it
If you haven't taken a physics course that is the equivalent of PHYS 2B, you're going to have a bad time. There are tons of resources available, but even after using them all this is just like the chalk he will throw across the class repeatedly during which time you will wonder what the hell you were thinking choosing the major you did.
I scraped by
I mean. He's alright TBH. He gives you insane amount of resources and discussion sections are super helpful. Still, you need to put in a lot of time studying before his quiz and try to understand the material as clearly as possible. Quizzes are tough but his final is actually reasonable.
His quizzes were crazy tough.
Having had prior physics experience before taking this class, I found it to be unreasonably tricky. I had to struggle to earn a B+,and I could only do half of the material on the final. Lectures were not very helpful, so I recommend thinking twice about taking this class if physics is not your strong point and you have not had it before.
Honestly, one of my favorite professors ever. He tries his hardest to help his students and gives a lot of resources. All the people that say he sucks don't go to lecture or pay attention. Also, he is one of the funniest professors around. His grading scale is also super generous and his quizzes are fair.
Avoid him at all cost. His lecture is confusing and his quizzes and tests are tricky and tough. If you go to lecture and find out he is lecturing on something you never learned or heard before, then most likely you won't learn anything from it.
Little clarity on majority of the chapters. Reads off slides. Does not draw out problems in class. I felt like he really didn't elaborate on the final few chapters and that material is a large portion of the final.
60% of your grade is the weekly quizzes. Quizzes are extremely simple and straightforward to get a 6 out of 8 on. Final is the other 40%. Final is hard, but while his grading scale is not curved, it is VERY reasonable. 40% C, 60% B, 75% A. Just study for quizzes a few hours before class and you are guaranteed a C.
Helpful and kind professor. Quite funny and engaging lectures. Provides ton of resources for learning. Quizzes are not so hard if you do the homework and go to lectures and problem solving sessions.
No. Just no. Quizzes were reasonable, except for the last few . The final was really hard. You have to teach yourself to succeed in this class. If you have the chance to take another professor for 2A, do it.
Alright, to be totally honest, that class is not bad at all. I took a physics course in high school but it does not mean you will do better in class, as most of the material I did not know. Didnt go to lectures, mostly read and hw. Grade is entirely quiz and test based, which are really hard, but made up for by the low percentage required for an A.
TBH this class was not as bad as everyone says it is. The quizzes were not insanely hard if you attended lecture, read the book, and did the homework. He gives hints on the quizzes during lecture! The final was definitely hard, but not impossible like everyone says it is! Trust me you'll be ok if you put in the effort!
He is a funny lecturer and the quizzes are very fair. If you take his class I would recommend watching the videos that he makes available. I didn't watch the videos until just before the final and realized that they would've been helpful when I was studying for the quizzes. If you try hard, read the book and go over the notes you should do fine.
He's not horrible at all. He may not explain some concepts super clearly but read the textbook and you'll be fine. Quizzes are simple, especially the first five ones. Final is harder but fair. About one third of students got an A or A+.
He's truly not helpful, talks circles around your questions or says "you should figure that out yourself", weekly quizzes are tough. Everyone failed one quiz and he told us it was our fault (because his teaching didn't have anything to do with that right??). Teaches physics by power point... Final was nearly impossible.
My opinion of Sharma improved steadily over the course of the semester. Good lecturer--funny and charismatic--but his explanations left a little to be desired. Weekly quizzes were tough and increased in difficulty over quarter. Final was hard. A lot of help is available--seek it out. Hard course, especially for those without physics experience.
Professor Sharma's quizzes are challenging but doable. His final is harder than his quizzes. Be prepared to study a lot for this class. Reading the textbook is ESSENTIAL for this class. Don't just do the homework assigned. Do as many as practice problems in the book as you can. You need to work REALLY hard to ace this class.
The 8 quizzes (can drop 2) get exponentially harder. The final was basically impossible. There were literally only 6 questions out of 24 that I knew how to do for sure. He gave us a 10% boost on our final exam score from the CAPE reviews, but even with that the final scores were extremely low (around 50%).
The class and material is very difficult. I always got a bad score on quizzes but somehow I passed. Sharma is a great man. If you talk to him a bit you'll see he is genuinley a nice person he wants you to succeed. Go to tutoring and get help or at least get familiar with him. He was around a lot in there. Absolute grading scale helped.
Prof. Sharma makes the class pointlessly difficult. Poor lecturer who is condescending of his students and just teaches straight from the book in lectures. HW problems have nothing to do with what will appear on the quiz. I could randomly guess and still do the same on the quizzes. WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER.
Grading was absolute scale, but A was80%. We had required weekly tutorial sessions. 8 Quizzes with 2 short answer questions per quiz. This was not too bad of a class. Definitely needed to understand the material, but we got a LOT of partial credit for our quiz problems. Final was also short answer, but again a lot of partial credit. Great class.
His final is unforgiving
Strong professor who knows his stuff. For this class the grading was pretty heavy on the TAs, and things were returned very slowly. Do a good job after the first few labs and you'll pass with no problems. Be honest with errors and voice concerns early and you'll get an A. Final was VERY based on lab processes.
Prof. Sharma is a really funny guy but this class was pretty hard in my opinion. If you have not taken high school physics before, you will probably have to put in more work. Sometimes the lectures were very long, almost 2 hours (which is hard if you're online). Your grade is only based on the weekly quizzes, midterm, and final.
Professor Sharma's lecture is so boring and not clear. He spent little time on the physics formulas that are difficult to understand by ourselves. We had to use iclicker app for midterms and final, and each question is timed. When students ask him about exam time and grading criteria, he asks them to figure it out by themselves...
He is fun and all but makes a 2-unit class a lot of work. 2CL is a lot more chill. Lab reports were all 10+ pages and beware of pre-lab quizzes! TA's were amazing life saviors though!
This two-credit course took about 8 hours a week (2000+ word reports). His lectures are challenging, but he's hilarious and nice. Your grade depends on your TA, but as long as you do the lab reports diligently, you should get an A. The final assesses your lab reports and is a fair assessment of your work. REMEMBER UNCERTAINTY AND T SCORES!
