BORING!!!!!!!!!! always late for class than expected us to make up her being late by staying late.
Loved this class! She kept it interesting and fun. The workload was reasonable and I learned a lot.
Vivian Hamilton is apparently trying to con people into taking her classes by using her other name, McCann. Before you take a class with this AWFUL teacher, check out her reviews under Hamilton.
Very good instructor. I learned more in this class than in any of my previous psych classes. She is interesting, and makes you think.
Vivian McCann is a smart and interesting instructor that really cares about her students. She taught me how to get along better with my family! It was a lot of work, but it was worth it!
Took this class online -- very clear instructions, good communication, easy to work with. Would take her again.
Online class: keep up with journals (once a week) and weekly chat and you will do fine. If you have taken Psy before it will be a repeat of a material. 4 quizes, midterm, final. Easy stuff. Teacher is very helpful if you have any questions.
One of the best classes I've taken at PCC. Vivian is knowledgable, sincere, and cares about her students. Her grading standards are high, so its not an easy class, but its worth it!
Horrible at giving grades back you to. You never really know how you are doing until the end. Material is from book, lectures, and handouts. Material on test is not always on things she has lectured on some also comes from the textbook. You really have to read the book in order to keep up.
It's the final week of the term and she has only graded 2 out of 7 of our weekly assignments. She puts word minimums on assignments which only encourages BSing to fill in what you don't have. She also went "out of town" for a week where we couldn't get a hold of her at all. Very frustrating. Assignments are tedious and boring.
This class took up the majority of my time this term. Lots of reading and annoying little assignments! Tests were frustrating because she does not test on pretty much anything from lectures, most of it is hidden in the textbook. She would also make assignments due online on weekend days. Won't take her again.
Vivian is an interesting personality. There were MANY students in class that strongly disliked her. Her tests are OUTRAGEOUSLY difficult, even though they are online through blackboard. This Spring term she missed more then 7 lectures, which is completely unacceptable. I enjoy the subject, but she was kind of a diva...
I took PSY201&202 online. She is a nice teacher, but is either very lazy or unable to responsibly teach the course. Only about 1/4 of any of the links work. She very rarely participates in any of the discussions, and takes forever return grades. By the last week of both classes, barely 1/3 of all assignments were graded. If she were present more...
Mrs McCann is a great teacher. She missed a few days due to conferences etc, but let us know ahead of time.. She made class fun and seemed to have a good sense of humor as well. She also worked with me for classes I missed due to my son being born and she kept in contact with me all the time.. I would definitely take future classes from her. ++++
Vivian is an expert teacher. I've taken 3 classes from her,and due to her I'm going to major in psychology. This last term, she did miss a lot of classes due to conference obligations, but she told us in advance and stayed in touch the entire time, and when she returned she had exciting new research to share with us.I really appreciate her dedication.
This is not an extremely easy class.. if you depend on the teacher to hold your hand through everything. I had to basically teach it all to myself and ended up with an A. She is super nice and funny but always seems rushed. This is not a class for everyone most people bombed the tests.
Professor McCann's classes are the best I've had at PCC. She really knows psychology, and challenges her students to learn. She listens to our feedback and is flexible and willing to modify things. I've found her to be responsive, responsible, and caring. I highly recommend her if you're serious about learning.
I took this class online. It was very organized, and Vivian was quick to respond to my emails. It was a lot of work, but I really learned a lot.
Extremely helpful.
Vivian is an awesome teacher that takes the time to answer questions. She is very punctual in answering Emails and uses class time effectively to explain material we read. Tests are difficult and so it is absolutely necessary to read the book and take thorough notes.
I have complaints. First of all, she canceled classes for a week so she could meet with her editor because she's writing a new book. Second, she expects everyone to be peppy like she is and gets upset if you aren't. Third, all the tests are through blackboard and over weekends.
I have complaints as well. I am taking the online course and she has been practically absent the entire time. We received one e-mail saying the reason she hasn't graded anything is because she is working on her new book. This is not at all fair to her students who should come first. To be successful an in online class you need instructor feedback.
Great teacher, very helpful, responds to email in a timely manner. Uses class time effectively to help understanding of text read. She works one-on-one with students who need it. Reading text book is a MUST, but I would highly recommend this teacher and class.
What a waist of money. She teaches out of her own book. 3 writing assignments each week. The papers of the 1st week were graded. Then no grading was done until one the last day of the term. She expects us to believe that she actually read our papers; 30 papers per student and she "graded" them all in one day. I cant believe she got paid for this.
It's Week 5. So far, we have missed 4 classes due to her absence. She came into class one day and said she had to leave for a conference so we wouldn't be having class. We had to write a paper because of her absence. Oh and we have to take an online test over the weekend. I feel like I'm taking a correspondence course without any feedback from her.
Awesome professor! She does her best to keep everyone interested and participate during the class conversations. She misses classes more than any professor I have had before though.
Bad professor. Like others said, she teaches from her own book. You are also not required to use MyPsychLab, so we should not be required to purchase a NEW copy of HER book. She always comes in late. She has also been absent numerous times. Tests are hard too! The questions are phrased oddly. Be aware: Tests and assignments are mostly ONLINE.
she is a very irritating professor. she has missed a handful of classes. she is always late. her lectures are straight from a powerpoint that she won't share. her exams are online and they are very vague. i LOVE psych and this prof is definitely NOT the one to take!!
This was a very disappointing class. She has canceled class 6 times. She gave us a paper due to her absents. She doesn't respond to e-mails and if she does respond it takes her forever. She just uses a PowerPoint to lecture, which she doesn't share (so don?t miss class). The tests are hard and there is a lot of reading.
She was always late to class or cancelled it. She wasn't even there for the last class. Her test were very hard and were normally over things that weren't covered in class and hardly covered in the book. She let people ramble on about their own problems, I felt like I was in therapy not in a class. I wish I would have picked a different professor.
I took this class only out of interest in the subject. The material could be interesting but, she has made me loose all interest. She has missed 6 classes. She assigns some work online but i didnt sign up for an online class i cant learn that way. The tests are unusually hard. It took her a week and a half to respond to an email I sent her. I am very disappointed that I paid for this class only to teach myself.
I really liked her, and felt lucky to be in her class. She did cancel several classes due to other professional work she does, but in all fairness, she let us know about most of them at the beginning of the term. She is extremely knowledgeable, caring, and passionate about psychology. I loved being in her class, it was great for me!
I took her class last year, and it was awesome! She actually wrote the book we used, and I liked it so much I kept it at the end of the class. I learned a lot, and would definitely recommend her.
This is a hybrid-type class, where you go to classes and also do a lot online. McCann writes books and has to travel for conferences, so when she misses class we do online assignments. I liked the online discussions, and taking tests online. Lectures were excellent, with up to date information and good powerpoints. She is also entertaining.
I took the online class, and it was super well organized. Every week you take a test and do some online assignments. McCann was very quick to respond to my emails and concerns, and I liked working with her. Great class.
Took online clss with her. Lags in grading sometimes 2 weeks and posts no feedback to discussions. She doesn't seem very involved. Tests from book and internet podcasts and videos she adds links to on site. Everything great except no feedback at all!!!
This is a great class! I have learned so much about myself and others behavior, and I'm getting along better with my family now as a result. McCann rocks!
Online class is a lot of work. I have no interest or desire to understand psychology I just need the class for my degree in accounting
This is the best class I have ever taken, and McCann is the best instructor. She literally "wrote the book" on human relations, and really seems to practice what she preaches. The class was fun and interesting, and I learned so much.
I took her for an online class, and she is horrible! Doesn't know how to work a CPU, doesn't give feedback, slow at grading, grades first term psych students like they are going to be career psychologists. She expects you to answer a 29 question test in 30 min and she puts trick questions in EVERY test. She is not worth the time.Take Dr.M.Swett!!
Timed exams that give you an average of 1 min and 15 seconds per question. This class has 2 papers per week, a test each week. 40 to 60 pages of reading and an average of 2 videos to watch. The text and videos are interesting but the class does require a lot of time and the timed tests are horribly stressful and difficult. Slow grading work.
She was extremely helpful, her syllabus laid everything we needed out VERY concisely, the tests were simple enough IF YOU DID THE READING, she actually wrote the Human Relations book we use in class...which made her delivery and my level of understanding that much easier. Bravo!
I am taking the online class, and it is the best online experience I have had. The syllabus and course materials are very detailed and clear, and she has been very quick to respond to emails. There is a lot of work (a paper, a discussion, and a quiz every week), but everything seems to work together and ends up helping me learn better. Great class!
Took Vivian's class online- she expects a lot from her students, but she is very clear about her expectations- so just pay attention! She does not give much feedback and does not really communicate with her class... but the text is good and overall I enjoyed the class.
Great experience! Helped write the book we used in class with other well known psyholgists, really made me consider changing my major. Offered extra credit. She really helped relate what we were learning to real life! wish I could have taken her for 202a cause that teacher on the other hand....
One of Vivian's strengths, in my opinion, is finding ways of making the classroom material relate to life. Another is her understanding of psychological concepts, and how to make them easy to understand for the rest of the class. I will definitely take classes with her in the future.
I loved this class. This professor was one of my best yet. Tests actually reflect important information instead of what some online professors do, which is pull useless facts that take up all your time to find. She encouraged the discussions to be taken seriously, which is why I received so much from this class. The posts are SO important!
She is the best instructor I have had thus far! Very positive and helpful!
This teacher was absorbed with hearing herself speak & gaining a sense of validity through her efforts than any teacher I have ever had. The textbook (written by her of course) was the worst books I have had the displeasure to learn from. I spent most of my time looking at other materials in order to understand/comprehend to pass the class.
Best.Teacher. Ever.
This is the best class I have taken at PCC. Professor McCann went out of her way to help, and really cares about her students. Lectures are fun and interesting and I actually enjoyed the homework assignments! I'm definitely taking more of her classes!
Excellent teacher! Online class was very well-organized and engaging. Teacher was supportive and provided multiple ways to learn material. Great book with online access including videos and simulations made the lessons really sink in. I loved this class!
I added this class at the last minute and am glad I did. She really does a good job breaking the teacher-student barrier with her methods and personality. She also made an already interesting subject more tangible and applicable making the material easier to remember. I would love to take another of her classes.
Love this professor! She is a genuinely kind person who really seems to care about her students. She sets a high bar for learning, and challenges you, but then helps you realize that you can master the challenge. She even makes it fun -- she has a good sense of humor that keeps class lively and interesting. Definitely recommend her.
My 2nd class with Vivian. Amazing teacher. Sets clear expectations, fair grading, understanding of life's hiccups. She has a lot of experience, and demonstrates that in her teaching. There was the occasional tangent that would be ran with, to be expected with any psych class, but she was pretty good about cutting it short if irrelevant.
My favorite class and professor so far, and I've taken a lot! Great teaching style with interesting assortment of readings and videos, and the weekly discussions are actually really valuable in helping you learn! Good communication and very supportive. Definitely recommend her!
Terrible. Grades assignments 3 weeks late after the due date. I felt no guidance by her instruction what-so-ever, and there was very little feedback after assignments are finally returned.
I took 2 classes from Professor McCann. She is interesting, knowledgeable, and kind, and I thought her book reflected those same qualities. Excellent.
Vivian does a very thorough job explaining concepts through visual representations, videos, activities, and online discussions. There is no way anyone walked out of class confused! I feel that Vivian is a great asset to PCC as an instructor and is very involved with her students success. What a great class
I took this class online. Grades are based on weekly discussion assignments and quizzes. The reading is pretty heavy, but she gives you powerpoints and learning objectives that helped me a lot. The videos were really interesting! She was really helpful with fast and supportive email replies, and graded everything in a week or less with feedback.
Here's the thing, she is an EXCELLENT lecturer, but her tests are online (material is not what we went over during class). Interesting video supplements, but I don't need to pay $90credit to watch TED Talks. Also, she is a bit of a procrastinator. Will let you know at the very last minute when class is cancelled and takes a very long time to grade
Vivian creates an engaging classroom environment with interesting lectures and a lot of encouragement of student discussion. She cares about her students, listens to us, and is willing to be flexible (although she does challenge you to learn and think!) This was my favorite class at PCC so far, and I am taking another class from her next term.
The tests were way too hard. The were very specific, and I found myself studying for them more than I normally would. Also, you are expected to read the week's entire chapter more than once, and be prepared to talk about it in class. Lectures were basically chapter review sessions. McCann was also a super harsh grader, she wants perfection.
Vivian is a humorous, passionate, inspiring professor who really cares about students. Lectures are interesting & engaging. You MUST come ready to discuss & participate a LOT, but it's fun! Online tests ask lots of detailed info from text: know who theorists are & what they believed. Uses real-life examples on tests. Good intro course. Taking 202A.
She's horrible at returning work and being helpful. The one discussion post I made that didn't get 100% she was extremely vague on and never explained why I didn't get 100%. She returned work 3 and 4 weeks late, every time, with these unhelpful comments. And she says she's on her e-mail every day, but she doesn't respond at all. Very poor teacher.
Great class with a LOT of reading! Vivian had very clear guidelines for all the (weekly) assignments, and the supplemental videos were current and interesting. She responded quickly to my emails, and was understanding and helpful when I had trouble with D2L. I recommend using the e-book so you can search key terms when taking the online tests.
She is MIA. Rarely answers inmail or email unless prompted because students are chatting about why she isn't responding. Lacks grading any work for weeks at a time making it difficult to gauge how well you are doing on assignments. This is very frustrating as you have no idea how you are doing until it is too late to fix.
She is so sweet and is super helpful!
I was really disappointed by her lack of engagement in the class. It was taken online but she only posted 3 times throughout the term and took days and days to respond. The course is broken up like this: 25% of your grade is discussions be thorough for full credit. The last 75% is timed quizzes. STUDY.
If you want to do well in her class, you have to read a lot and take notes of your readings, because she doesnt cover much of the material that's in the test. She also takes really long to grade the posts. I bet she's a nice person but I wouldn't recommend her.
Vivian is the best instructor I have had at PCC. She really knows psychology and is passionate about it, which makes classes very engaging. She is willing to be flexible if the class wants more time on a subject, and treats everyone with respect. Wish I could take more classes from her!
I love Vivian! Her class is by far my favorite- she's knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and takes time to know her students personally. Her assignments are frequent, but easy and useful. Also, her lectures are clear and easy to pay attention to. 10/10 would take her class again.
Don't recommend her for beginning psychology. It was more work than an upper division psych course!
Quizzes every week on two chapters, but all online so you can look at your book. Post every other week! Definitely need the book but can buy an older version. Emailed her at the beginning of the term and didn't hear back for three weeks though- annoying for an online class. She was flexible when I made a mistake though!
Vivian is a well-organized instructor, and the class had a lot of interesting material. She was responsive to my emails, and a nice person. Would take her again.
Took this class online. It was well-designed and organized, and she offered interesting videos each week to supplement the reading. The discussion topics gave you choices each week, and I actually really liked writing them. I learned a lot, and she gave me good feedback. Way more interesting than other online classes I've had!
McCann is a great professor. You can tell she knows what she's doing. Her class is well organized, structured logically, and she gave me great feedback in emails and assignments. Highly recommend her. She cares!
She wont return emails and will likely not engage in anything of debate of topic. Seems like she just wants to get royalties off her course-book material, in which "she wrote", and you must E-purchase. There is no way buy used, you are stuck just paying her royalties. Good luck, but if you can, DONT DO IT!
While she had a lot of great material to learn from this class and the workload was a total joke. A two page essay discussion every week, followed by a lengthy homework assignment, and finally a quiz. This is just on D2l. She uses revel which I like but then there is the journals, the quizzes, and the assignments. Its was like taking two classes!!
Vivian was great! A lot of homework in this class, but if I needed help or felt overwhelmed - I sent her an email letting her know and she always got back to me and had helpful advise on how to move forward. The coursework is broken up into chunks throughout the week which is great so that you don't save it for the last minute. I learned so much!
Vivian is an excellent professor. I took several classes from her, and they were all well-organized with clear instructions and deadlines. She was responsive to emails, and seemed to genuinely care about students doing well. Wish there were more like her!
She was great. I took her online class and it was great. There's an ebook for to read with questions in the readings that go straight to her. There's a group video meeting each week. She was understanding and worked with me. I would take more classes from her!
Professor McCan is a fabulous psychology instructor! The interesting class material is delivered in a student-friendly, convenient digital textbook. Course content is very reasonable and consists of weekly discussion posts (student can choose any 3 to skip), short quizzes, and 4 multi-chapter exams. Clear expectations and easy to follow structure.
I dont feel this lady really cares about her students or understands her class is a prerequisite and not everyone is going to be excited for psych. Most tedious class I have ever taken online. She is clearly collecting money from the book she wrote, off of us. Avoid at all costs. Even my mother in law who is a university professor agrees.
I learned so much from this class! Professor McCann, who wrote the book, genuinely cares about you and your growth. She will encourage you to work hard, and there is a lot of material, but the result is so worth the effort! Weekly readings broken into small pieces with quizzes, weekly discussions and assignments, and exams every two weeks.
She wrote the online book you use, which to me has felt very poorly written, unclear, and hard to use as a reference. She assigned reading and quizzes so you are forced to work for this class almost every day. The tests are SUPER poorly written, confusing, and with many silly questions about what the book's wording is and not the concepts. Ugh.
McCann is an excellent instructor. She is very clear and organized, and she tells you exactly what you need to do in discussions to get full points. She uses an online text and breaks reading down to several assignments per week, so you have to stay on top of the deadlines, but that actually made me procrastinate less. Highly recommend her
I took PSY201A and PSY202A with Vivian, and I really enjoyed her classes. Though these classes are a decent amount of work, I walked away from both feeling like a more complete and empathetic human being. Vivian is more than willing to discuss any confusion or interests with students. I would take another class with her for sure.
Vivian was an inspiring professor. Her knowledge is clearly demonstrated throughout the course. All in all, she taught the course in a way that is at your own pace but truthfully, it requires almost everyday work. However, if you just do the work, put in genuine effort, and ask for clarification, you will succeed. Its worth it, if you're willing.
I really enjoyed this class, there was definitely a lot of homework but you're left feeling like you have learnt something. She is very organized and is clear on when everything is due, and on harder chapters she gives students more time to do assignments. The discussions are kind of hard, basically mini essays, but they can be done in an hour.
Do the work and read the book and you will be fine. She responds fast and is willing to help you out. More professors need to be like her.
Workload of two classes and expects students to turn in homework on 5 of the 7 days per week. Makes you buy an $80 online textbook that she wrote that doesn't work well and reads opinionated. "Teaches" about gender issues extremely poorly and brings up subjects such as eating disorders with no warning and seemingly total lack of understanding.
This is more work than I have in my upper level PSU. Long readings, difficult tests and essays (in discussion form) due each week. No breaks to study for finals or mid-terms. Book is interactive online, not conducive to traditional learning. Want a paper version? Expect to buy two books. 1/10
Great class and great professor! Vivian is super clear in all her communication, and the class is well-organized and easy to manage. You get points for reading sections of the text every few days and then do discussion posts. The online exams are each over about 2 chapters, so not too stressful. Definitely recommend. Vivian was easy to work with.
This was the best class I've taken online so far.Vivian was kind, supportive, and really wants you to succeed. The reading was online, with a lot of extra features to help you learn, and there's an app so you can work on it anytime from your phone. Vivian's passion for psychology is contagious!
Professor Mccann is great at organizing the class and providing flexibility for students to learn the material. There are several different study opportunities and ways to engage with the learning that there will be something that fits almost any student.
I love psychology, but taking this class drained me of it. An unbelievable amount of work is assigned each week, all with different due dates. This is not a manageable class if you are going to take other classes. I had to withdraw halfway through the term because the workload for this class alone was insane. If you have a job/other classes, GL.
Fully invested in Pearson Revel, which is terrible spyware that runs like garbage on a modern browser. If you are a busy person or work full time this class is a huge pain because you can't just finish everything up on the weekend - you have to log in almost every day to check off assigned readings and do little quizzes. Awful.
Very straightforward class. Weekly reading, broken into pieces, but you can work ahead.Reading is online, with built-in quizzes that are easy if you pay attention. The usual discussions, which you can skip a few of, and multiple choice exams. Professor was easy to work with.
Professor Vivian is amazing. I've taken 3 classes from her, and come out of them a better, more empathic person. Her intelligence and compassion are inspiring!
Vivian is a great teacher and a pretty easy grader. Most of this class is the interactive textbook readings and the in depth weekly discussions. They are a lot of writing, but they are the only assignments submitted other than a midterm, final, and the textbook readings.
If you have a job, please do not take this class. There are due dates every day, or if you're lucky every other day throughout the term on top of discussion posts that are required to be essay-quality that are graded hard. I have taken many online classes and have never had a class where log in and assignments were required EVERY DAY.
I really liked all the material the professor provided for us to choose from in our discussions. It made it really interesting for me, and made reading other posts enjoyable, too. There is a lot of reading in this class, but it is paced well, and easy to understand. Vivian was easy to work with.
Discussion posts are required to be essay-quality that are graded hard. I have taken many online classes and have never had a class where assignments were required EVERY DAY. Don't expect her to grade all 7 discussion posts either, regardless of if you deserve a better grade on later posts she only grades 5 and grades 2/7 of the posts as 0/16.
Overall easy & grading was very clear. Lots of assignments & quizzes, so I wouldn't recommend if you have a full-time job or busy schedule. Weekly discussions were interesting and flexible since you can choose your own topics to write about. Midterms & finals were multiple choice, open book, and the Pearson textbook was super helpful.
