I had her for ENC 1102, she is very passionate about what she teaches. Test are easy if you take notes and just pay attention in class. I will definitely take another class with her.
She was a wondering professor. She always made sure you understood the material, made the class interesting, and had great stories to tell that directly related to what we were learning about. I would definitely take all my classes with her if I could. She's amazing.
Only 2 essays and 1 research paper. Study the concepts of the stories and the elements of the themes and you'll do fine. Very helpful and makes class interesting
i personally hate English, but this was a good class.
She is a very good professor. Makes class interesting. You need to get prepared for class o understand the material, read, read, read. You will find out why is so important. Test are easy if you study, tricky if you don't. Young teacher but very prepared.
I had Professor Ruiz for 20th Century Humanities and I absolutely loved her. She is an excellent teacher and is extremely helpful. It is very easy to pick up on the information because she makes the lecture a conversation and interacts with us. Take her! Don't be hesitant you won't regret taking her. I got an A no problem. Just study:)
Professor Ruiz is a very good teacher. She is clear in her expectations for the class. It is very important to read all the lectures. Class is very interesting and the professor is very knowledgeable.
I'm a straight A student. I work hard and expect my teachers to do the same. And she does but I also like them to have some experience. She's fresh out of college. I hated the way she taught. First B I received EVER and I don't even know why! Her tests are extremely easy.
Professor Ruiz's test are easy but she expects a lot out of you when it comes to her essays. She also expects you to read all of the assigned stories because you end up discussing them during the next class and your graded on your participation.
Prof. Ruiz is easy once she clarifies how she wants her essays written. Her tests are easy but you must read the assignments given because she talks about them as a group in class and ends up quoting them on her mid term and final.
Dr. Ruiz, is a pretty great teacher. Shes young and really enjoys her class. Her work is easy as long as you complete it you'll do fine in her class. If you participate in class your grade will reflect that.
her test are easy, she expect way to much for her essays and she does not care about how much you know and you can give because she stick to her curve and place people in the grade she think is good for her. some other professor with 40 years teaching corrected each of my papers but to miss Ruiz I could not get not more than a B.
She has a bad nasty actituted. Her class is really boring ad untersting and she doesnt make any effort to make it interesting. Treats studentsof they were on middle school. She teaches reading directly from that book. Doesnt know how to answer students questions if they are not on the book. Dont take her you will regret it.
If you don't really like humanities DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER! She doesn't have the best attitude the class is just BORING!! You have journals like every 2 weeks and quizzes. If you take this class you better be a good writer. I CAN'T SAY ALL THAT I WANT TO SAY JUST IF YOU ARE TAKING THIS BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO THEN TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
I loved her class! The class is only fun if you participate in the group discussions. Several times in class we would have debates and lots of insightful discussions and that's what made the class fun. She had a great sense of humor. You have to take it out of her. Overall one of the best teacher. DONT LEAVE THE JOURNALS FOR LAST MINUTE!
TEACHER HAS A BAD ACTITUDE SHE REALLY DOESNT CARE.DONT ASK ANY QUESTIONS IF THE TOPIC IS NOT FROM THE BOOK CZ SHE WONT KNOW HOW TO ANSWER IT. ATTENDANCE IS "MANDATORY". BORING AND UNTERESTING CLASS AND HAS UNFAIR WAY TO GRADE. NO EXTRA CREDIT, NO MAKE UP WORK. IF YOU DONT LIKE HUMANITIES DONT BOTHER TO TAKE HER.
Teacher is easy and fair, your grade depends on you. Not a lot of work but the reading have to be done. Journals and quizzes make up most of her class so studying is a must. Just do all the work and you can pass with flying colors
Bad attitude. If she doesn't like you,she will do what ever it takes to make the student fail the class.
On your first day she comes off as a very tough teacher but she really isn't. She expects you to show up to class and add to the class conversations. The class is very easy if you attend class. Most of the reading HW is short. The 2 tests we took only took me 20 minutes each. She tells you what you need to know and makes class fun.
she is very nice but very stale and boring. assignments are easy but boring. most people were falling asleep in class and participation was pointless. easy grade but boring teacher. VERY strict on punctuality and due dates. if you have kids she could care less, you most put her class as first priority!
She teaches a century a day. If u fail anything, there's no going back. Tests are on the century she taught, however she grades them strictly. Don't ever ever ever ever miss the presentation day, no make up days at all. I enjoy humanities, however this professor can really test your patients. Oh btw. She has an anxiety issue with cellular devices.
Goes over a lot of material ! She's very strict as well. If you'r really interested in this subject I recommend taking her.She teaches a lot of things. She's fairly easy on grading journals and the presentations. She can have an attitude at times, and makes no exceptions for anyone. Attend class, Pay attention, do your journals and you'll be fine
The professor was very helpful throughout the semester. She is a little strict about cell phones being used and attendance. There are some journals that need to be done and can be confusing but her exams and her quizzes are pretty easy if you listen to her lectures. And make sure to take notes. Learned a lot from that class and had fun.
When I took this class, it wasn't what I would've liked. The work was okay, but sometimes Professor would make us do so much with so little time to do it. I struggled to get through this class passing. Her attitude was a little unhelpful as well. If you like Humanities with a passion, by all means take it. Otherwise, get someone else if you can.
She's a young professor with a Ph.D the book you don't really use tbh. Her journals are confusing at times so the earlier you start the better. Quizzes are easy if you take notes and pay attention. One research paper you have to present then a midterm and final. NO CELLPHONES! She's nice and smart, but a little strict at times. Overall easy A or B.
SHE'S SO HOT! Her class is easy as long as you pay attention, attend, and study alittle by applying yourself and what you've learned. She tried to make class interesting and she's kind of strict only because she needs to be with the "type" of students in the class she teaches..
She's so intelligent, nice, and beautiful!
One of my favorite teachers, especially for humanities! She is tough but the class is easy as long as you do the work. Her quizzes are based off of her lectures which aren’t boring at all. One easy project which you pick the topic. She’s intelligent and made this class my favorite.
She is really strict but her class is easy except she is a harsh essay grader when it comes to MLA format. She's sometimes unclear with things but just ask. Don't buy the book it's a waste of money you don't really need it. She is definitely a feminist you can tell by the way her entire class is. But I don't blame her for being one..
Don't let her scare you. She's not that bad, a lot class depends on her mood. Her quizzes and exams are relatively easy. It's not hard to get an A.
If you have the chance, take her. It's not a hard class, but you definitely need to put in some effort. She gives weekly assignments online, they're not hard and can be completed with ease. She's very clear and explains her lessons thoroughly. If I had to take another humanities class, i would definitely love to take her again.
Are you able to pass this class with basically an easy A? I'd say yes. Should you read? I really didn't. I would read the handouts, poems, and plays when necessary. I would say just to read because she would say to read & then next class spring a quiz. Lectures for most classes, in class discussions. Semi-interesting. NO PHONES ALLOWED! Annoying.
expect to have on average 5 journals and one essaypresentation. she usually gives a test after every 2 subjects she covers. TAKE NOTES, everything from the quizzes comes straight from her lecturespower points. the book isn't really needed, i never used mine, she gives very little assignments so when she presents one take it serious!
If it wasn't for her my semester at VCC would have been a complete drag. She's young so she still understands what it's like to be a student but she empowers you with knowledge and expects you to do something with it. Passionate for the arts and English!
If you have the chance, take her. It's not a hard class, but you definitely need to put in some effort. She's very clear and explains her lessons thoroughly. If I had to take another humanities class, I would definitely love to take her again. About cell phones, if you need to tweet, FB, text or e-mail, on less is an emergency leave it for after.
Was an easy A, you just have to read material by due dates, follow syllabus. Tests are straight from lectures so make sure you take notes. She does pop quizzes on reading material so make sure you are up to date. Oh, don't even think about pulling out your cell phone during class, she will call you out on it. Has an extreme pet peeve on cell phones
This class was really easy. You don't really have to read if you take all the notes from her powerpoints. Lecture is slightly tiring but it was ok for me. Quizzes are really easy if you go over your notes, same with the 2 tests. You do 5 journal assignments and a 1 project presentation, but put time into it and you're fine. Easy A if you try a bit.
very strict on cell phone usage and using computers for class and very long lectures
Ruiz is strict with due dates. She will NOT let you make up any work so do everything on time and you'll pass just fine. Shes fun and knows what shes talking about. She loves history a lot. Dont really need the next book if you take notes on her slide shows but shes fast, so write quickly. Tests are easy but journals are tedious.
As far as her grading, it is easy. she acts tough but i get 100% on a lot of assignments. she takes attendance every day. her lectures go fast and she doesn't wait for you to write everything down. if she doesn't cover it in class you will not be tested on it. no surprise quiz's. no late work. hw assignments take a lot of time. interesting class(:
LOVED HER! She was so sweet, and wanted to help you! She can be pretty strict and sometimes a tough grader, but its all just to make you a better student. She's clear on what she expects from you and will help you in any way. MAKE SURE TO TAKE NOTES FROM HER POWER POINTS! those notes will come in handy. I would love to take her class again.
Don't take this professor! So much pointless and unnecessary work. Doesn't care if you were dying the day of class, if you don't have a note from a Dr you won't be allowed to make anything up. Class seems to drag on, extremely boring. There are so many better professors at Valencia!
Professor Ruiz provides a detailed syllabus. Pay attention to her lectures and take down notes from the power points. Quizzes and exams are easy as long as you pay attention and study some notes. the textbook is not needed for class. Do your best not to be absent from this class. Make sure you close the door behind you if you're late. Trust me.
Doesnt motivate students to actually care about learning because its so boring no extra credit and will not help you out over all a boring class
I loved this class. It really helped me with my writing. She gives good feedback. I would take her again. Tips: don't be absent and turn in everything on time.
It wasn't a terrible class but i would perfer to double check for better teachers.
I like that she gives everything on the syllabus. That helps when you work two jobs :(
Shes a very tough grader on essays! Her test are very easy though all of them are matching and multiple choice. She also gives us many readings to do which the whole class never read and she just ended up reading it to the class
She's always prepared and organized. That helps a lot. I like that she goes by the syllabus. She doesn't accept late work and always sticks to deadlines and due dates, which makes sense because she goes by the syllabus. I liked her class. I learned a lot.
Shes a good prof would take again
Dr. Ruiz is a very through professor. She expects college work and you better give it to her. I had the opportunity to take a hard English teacher in high school so I was pretty prepared and used to the heavy work load. Take lots of notes and make sure you pay attention. The notes will help with any quizzes and test that you take.
You are not allowed to miss her class for anything. She pretty much treats her students like high schoolers instead of college-level adults. She is very strict about everything from assignments to packing up 1 minute before class is over. Boring class. Monotone. Im very much surprised I passed the class. I dont recommend taking her class.
Extremely difficult class. She is pretty nice but she is super strict, you cannot miss class or you will fail. I don't recommend taking this class, her grading is hard as well but the quizzes are simple as long as you study. She does not like when phones are out and she will take you out of the class if you don't come for more then 3 days.
Dr. Ruiz is a great person with amazing intentions however, she pushes you to a point where it either crushes or builds you. I saw a quarter of the class either fail or be removed. YOU CANNOT MISS CLASS. IF YOU MISS CLASS, YOU ARE ALMOST GUARANTEED TO STRUGGLE. I only got a high "B" because I applied myself vigorously(which takes a toll on you).
I came on here and people said she was difficult but fair and that is not true. She gives work that you are only aware of if you're in class, she doesn't take late work which is really annoying. Her class is boring her lectures aren't helpful and overall her class is difficult. Please do not take this class unless you have no other option.
I'm sure you can definitely find a better teacher to take. Do yourself and your grades a favor and take LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE. I would never take another course with her.
Bruh where do I start DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT AN A UNLESS YOU ARE a writing machine. She expects her student to be perfect at writing that she will literally tear your paper down. She is the hardest grader Ive ever had. She doesn't want to see her students win smh. You're better off choosing another proffessor.
She was available online during the pandemic and answered my emails quickly and everything was easy to follow on Canvas. She also gave me feedback that helped me in my writing, which was helpful. I really have no complains. I enjoy her class.
I seriously don't even understand how this class went so horribly for me. I showed up every day, completed all my work, paid attention, gave full effort, yet still failed miserably. Don't take this professor if you aren't will in to have every written word you submit be scrutinized down to the last detail. Missing comma? -5. Misspelled word? -5.
She inspired me to become a better writer. She is a great professor. Always there if you need her. She is a tough grader but she just wants you to read what you write and improve your skills. Definately recommend her.
If you're an A student and don't mind having to check every three days for a sudden quiz or discussion post, then this is the class for you. She has weird preferences, like no smiley faces or sarcasm. SO MUCH WORK!!! Quizzes are both difficult and easy. She appreciates hard work and she can see dedication.
Dr. Ruiz inspired me to be a better writer. You can see that she is passionate about writing. She gives detailed feedback which helped me. I recommend her 100%
By far the worst professor in the school. Only wants to be addressed as Dr. Ruiz. Claims she won't respond to emails that are grammeticaly correct. She sent me feedback on an email I sent her once. Doesn't state her interactions clearly. If you want an F. Then take this class. If she doesn't like your tone, then she won't respond to your emails.
Tough grader
Big fat no. An actual nightmare of a class. Prides herself on being a tough grader, papers galore, just about six million (fortunately, open-book) quizzes a week. A big eye-sore on the Canvas dashboard. Save yourself the time and effort and find another professor. If you're a flawless writer, take the class. You're not, so don't.
Dr. Ruiz teaches a very complete class. I've learned so much. I learned a lot about grammar which I didn't know I needed.
Just your average writing class. I did learn a lot, though. The discussion posts were especially fun and helpful. I liked that she sends emails with tips and resources to help you in your writing.
Absolutely loved the discussion posts. You only have to write 3 essays, so it's not so bad. I would take her again. Her weekly emails are helpful as well.
Dr. Ruiz is by far one of the best English teachers I've ever had and I really appreciate her instruction. She has made me a better writer through her way of teaching from the bottom up by breaking down the components of an essay before we even write one. She really is great at getting students to critically engage with the content, too.
Has lots of threats about getting a zero or deducting points. Do not do this or I won't accept your work. Do not email me. Do not do this or I will deduct points. Don't xcvgvg or you'll get a zero/I will deduct points... And yes, she actually deducts the points, with no limits. You can easily get a zero or negative grade.
Hate her.
Dr. Ruiz is a good professor. Although she is a tough grader, you are 100 % guaranteed to actually learn in her class. She gives around 4-5 quizzes weekly (open book) and gives you the option to re-take, 3-4 major essays, which she will actually read, no mid-term or final exam is taken in her class. Overall, we take her again.
Work is fairly easy to do. Though she has a zero tolerance to any late work. Some of the work is basically a wheres waldo of trying to find a specific sentence that somewhere between 40 pages. She has no compassion for students. She got so pressed over people not keeping a piece of paper given the previous week she kicked everyone from class.
Overall the process of learning how to write was broken down step by step however, mistakes were costly. The no late work acceptance policy could really hurt your grade in the event you forgot something or simply did not do it. I was also sick for an "in class only" assignment and did not attend that day and still received a zero for it.
You can really tell how passionate and caring she was when it came to her lessons and students. She genuinely cared about our success and well-being and although she was kind of tough when it came to grading, she always left behind constructive criticism. The class was also fairly easy since most of the quizzes came straight from the book.
I completed all online assignments for her class. One time, she gave a paper assignment & the whole class forgot to do it. She kicked the whole class out. Proceeded to say we won't be getting attendance points (even though we were there) which is needed for things such as FAFSA. Very tough grader, many essays, I wouldn't go to her class again.
She breaks everything down and explains everything. Which I appreciate. I enjoyed the class discussions and the final paper was not hard. Overall, good class. Would take her again. I actually feel like I learned something.
Good professor. She takes the time to break down concepts so that they're easier to understand. She gives great tips on how to improve and offers lots of support. Textbook is not required and assignments are minimal and doable. The only big assignments are 4 essays. Does not accept late work or offer extra credit but provides helpful resources.
This professor is very passionate about teaching and ensures her students understands the curriculum. She gives about 2-3 quizzes per week that are based on the weekly modules. There are 3 writing assignment that you complete throughout the semester, but she helps you with all of them. Overall a good professor.
Professor Ruiz is a very good professor overall. She has around 3-4 quizzes each quiz based on the modules that you have to read. 3 essays the whole semester and NO final exam. She does not allow phones or headphones at all and she loves it when you participate if you do not she will sometimes randomly pick so be prepared. I would take her again.
Typical busy work class. Very critical of grammar and WILL take off points for minor offenses. She is not lenient on late work and she makes it clear. Very picky and will tear an essay apart, but at the very least she does give considerable feedback.
Professor Ruiz is not one to put up with late assignments, students not paying attention, etc. She does assign about 4-5 quizzes each week that go along with the modules she provides on Canvas. There are some in-class assignments so be sure to attend her lectures. There are 4 essays throughout the semester, with extremely strict grading criteria.
By far the most nit-picky grader I have ever had the pleasure, or lack thereof, of experiencing. Points are being removed for an extra space, or perhaps you put down two periods on accident... WOMP WOMP minus 5 points. Only releases the work due when it's the week of so no chance of getting things down when it's convenient. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!!!!
She's good at communicating expectations and deadlines and I appreciate that because it helps me a lot. She's a tough grader but leaves good feedback. Like she says, just do the work and you'll be fine.
Bad professor. She is very strict when it comes to grading those essays. My essay printed wrong which didn't fur fill the requirements she asked for. After explaining the situation and showing her that I had it correctly on my computer, even offering to send it to her via email, she ignored me and ended up giving me a zero for the essay.
I appreciate the feedback that she leaves in writing assignments. She takes the time to read what you write which not all proffessors do. She also explains things very well which I appreciate since it helps me learn better. I also like that she gives us sample essays because that way I know exactly what she wants. I feel like I'm learning with her.
Just about my least favorite teacher, was very niche with grading and stubborn.
I loved taking class with her. She explains things thoroughly and discusses everything in the classroom, which I find very helpful. I also like that she provides clear instructions. You can tell she cares that students learn.
Dr. Ruiz is an excellent professor. She's clear about not accepting late work and explains assignments well. She gives helpful feedback but deducts points for small mistakes. There are 3-4 quizzes each week, which you can retake. Stay on top of your work, and you'll do fine. Highly recommend her class 100% guaranteed you'll learn.
She is clear about what she expects of you and won't hesitate to give you an honest grade. Doesnt allow "one late pass" or anything, no matter what it's an automatic 0 if not turned in by the posted time (but you usually have the week to work on it). She gives good feedback and isn't a bad professor but overall I'd rather have someone more relaxed.
I appreciate that the professor takes the time to explain things. I've had other professors that don't explain very well. Also, I appreciate class discussions because it helps me get to know my classmates. It's a good class. It helped me grow as a writer.
