...Unfortunately, you have to experience it yourself to know my pain
No Comments
Incoherent, doesn't give enough details, just horrible.
... Avoid her if you can!
very bad. in her class you dont learn
Not a good idea. Brilliant and knows her field like no one else, but puts students through highly unnecessary stresses, including using her own densely written and convoluted textbook. AVOID.
This is just simply not a good teacher.
Although well versed in her field this professor is very ineffective in her teaching methods (cannot teach). Uses inappropriate text and really does not have the students best interest at heart. Highly judgmental of students. Avoid at all cost. You will be frustrated and learn nothing.
Although she knows her droll field very well, she does not know how to teach that knowlegde to students. She is vindictive person especially when she feels challenged by a student. She is an uncaring bitter miserable woman who displaces her feelings about her failed marriage onto the students.Avoid.
I think that this teacher is very unreasonable. Her test are impossible, her teaching method stinks and she is always talking about her family and the boys father. This professor is very nasty in attitude and needs help.
This woman's professional demeanor is severely lacking in several ways. All the positive attributes she lends to teaching her courses are almost completely nullified by some obvious personality problems, as well. Try to avoid her classes--she is hostile and antagonistic to students without cause.
This professor is brilliant in her field, but obviously she is the only one that knows what she's talking about. Her test are almost impossible to pass unless that's your only class, and she makes no effort to help students raise their grade.Aviod, because you'll be lowering your hard earned GPA.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOER I'VE EVER COME IN CONTACT WITH. SHE KNOWS HER FIELD,BUT HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO TEACH. SHE IS HORRIBLE. pLEASE AVOID TAKING THIS CLASS. HER EXAMS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS. SHE IS THE WORST. SHE IS A B***H. SHE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS, AND SHE WON'T HELP YOU.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. Her tests are absolutely impossible. If you take her class you will truly regret it. It was terrible.
Horrible and unclear teaching methods.
very HORRIBLE, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.....
This is the worst class you can ever take!! everything is soo hard, this prof is a B*** she dont help you, she dont teach, ok she know her field but is like she gets annoyed teachin, she thinks everyone knows what she talkin about! DONT TAKE IT WITH VICKY TARTTER!!!!

The best professor I had ever had. Dedicated to his students, nice, clear. Her class requires lots of work, but it is worth it. I recomend her to anyone who really wants to get a good idea of what psychology is about. Dedicates lots of time to solve student's questions. THE BEST!!!
She’s a great professor. Very dedicated to her students, she answers all questions quickly & clear. Her class requires a lot of work, but it is worth it. She knows the material like the back of her hand. Dedicates a lot of time outside of class helping students with their problems.
During the first class the professor stated that she would work as hard as you and she did. Every week I emailed her questions and I got a quick answer the following day. Her class was very creative and she was very professional.
Prof. Tatter is a challenging Professor which many interpret perhaps as difficult professor. She is one of the most available and resourful professor in the department of psychology. She finds time for any students who seeks help from her. Prof. Tatter is exceptional.
I understand some people may be angry about the demands of the coursework in Dr. Tartter's "Perception" class. I too was angry at times. The question that came up for me, and I hope others will take a moment to think about it: “What was I really angry about?” As a teacher, Dr. Tartter goes beyond
very good
An exceptional teacher with vast knowledge and ability to keep you attentive and informed. Very approachable, and you would get immediate feedback from her via email. She respects your class interventions , encouraging you to take risks in your research and presentations. I highly recommend her: A+
She wears nice outfits. She was helpful, yes, but her help wasn't always clear. When she replied to my emails, I was more confused than when I began. I don't have a background in the subj. matter, so it was very hard. I dropped the class. My advice, get a tutor and don't plan to go out on weekends.
Tartter is definitely one the most dedicated teachers I have ever had. She asks you to work hard, but she works even harder, in giving individual attention and facilitating a depth of learning that is rare to find. She really and actually cares about the students, who remain at the center of her efforts as a professor. Highest rating, A+.
Challenging, thought provoking, stimulating, and ethusiastic,Prof.Tartter is not only gifted as a teacher, she knows her stuff.Unless you are an underachiever, you have no reason not to succeed in her course(s).With unlimited help and guidance, she allows any willing student to "master" her areas of expertise. Have taken 2 classes with her. Great!
Dr. Tartter is one of the most talented teachers I've known. She helped me see the connections between psycholinguistics and other mainstream scholarly fields, such as literature, philosophy, linguistics, current events. She helped me generate ideas and to really see what is wrong with nativism. My friend from MIT was right about her!
A dedicated professor -- attentive and willing to communicate with students. An expert on psychology of language, but knowledgeable in other areas as well. Her often-complained-about demanding exams are also a directed learning experience. Lectures can be a bit disorganized, but Tartter's other excellent qualities more than compensate.
Just do the work and you'll get along fine. You won't walk away from this class a more learned person, but that's fine unless your a psych major.

This woman is brilliant but she forgets that not all of her students are at "her" level. She is much better one-on-one, which says a lot about her as a person and a professor. However, she does behave in rather inappropriate ways when there is/are a cute guy(s) in class, so she can be a bit biased towards certain students & against others
Prof Tartter was very helpful during when you made inquiries by emai, but can be very bipolar. Had favorites in the class. Helped students evolved to higher level, but sometimes made you feel stupid and talked down to students. It seemed as though we were doing her research for her not our own work.
This is an excellent class, and very useful. Just be prepared to work hard! A must for those wanting to persue psychology
If you pay attention to what she is saying, ask frequent questions about what she leaves unclear, and simply do the reading/work its a great class. Classmates have made complaints about her, but there were only a few people who actually made an effort in this class, and she was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and understanding if you actually try.
If you are a hot young male, you'll get lots of attention (and a free show, if you can stomach an inch of flab hanging over the top of her tight skirt when she lifts her arms up to bare her abs). Her voice is shrill and pinched, hard to listen to, and equally hard to comprehend. Take someone else's class instead if you can, you'll be glad you did.
BY FAR THE WORST TEACHER EVER!!! I DROPPED HER CLASS AND I HAVE A 3.9 GPA. I NEVER DROPPED A CLASS, THIS LADY THINKS SHES TEACHING AT HARVARD LMAO SHE IS HORRIBLE YOU WILL BE DEPRESSED AND ANGY IF YOU TAKE HER CLASS, 2 PAGE EASSYS HER EXAMS CNA TAKE YEARS TO STUDY FOR SHE CANT DRESS RIGHT SHE THINKS SHES YOUNG.
I has Tartter for Perception class, and it was the biggest mistake of my life. First of all the material was boring. She made it harder that she really had to. The biggest problem is that she DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
This woman is mean, snide and has her favorites in the class---(students who work in the psychology deptmt)The devil incarnate
Someone needs to buy Vicky T a mirror & a manual on student relations! Looks & teaches like The Joker from Batman!!
Not a great class, but I love knowing that her personal life pretty much sucks.
worst professor ever and a hard grader
I had her for Independent Study - Psych of Language. Although the content was very interesting, it was difficult to get through but she provided a lot of fast feedback which helped understand the material much better. She is very helpful but you have to make the initiative and show you are hard working.
A very difficult class and the material is hard to understand. It's a class where you have to read the material over a few times to completely understand it but you also have to take advantage of her emailing policy. If you take the initiative to do the work and email her asking for feedback, she will reply in about ONE day and help you out.
gave a lot of work, her expectations are too high. Overall, shes just weird but you can pass with a decent grade just need to keep up with stuff
Prof. Tartter cares deeply about education. And believes everyone should, not least students themselves. She encourages students to ask questions, to think, and to appreciate more richly the worlds in which they live--even if, yes, this means they must also work! It is a fair bargain, however, as she makes herself as if heroically and sacrificially
Always on time, consistent and prepared prof. Tartter knows how to keep a student interested because she "owns" what she teaches.
I am sorry I took her class. Tartter is an arrogant woman who thinks she knows it all. I did not learn much from her besides how to hate my professor. My experience in her class taught me to not trust professors.
She is really difficult, there's no denying that. She demands a lot from her student, but she definitely gives as much (or more) in return. Work really hard, email her with questions and/or rough drafts, and incorporate her feedback into your work. You will learn a great deal, and most likely get a good grade if you do all of the above.
I find Prof. Tatter very nice, shes blunt, funny and shes knows her stuff.Make sure you prepare yourself before class (already reading the articles, books) you are good. Always participate in her class and reply to her emails. Her 15 page research paper was a killer its worth 30% she expects alot from you. I had her for Psy 420 advance class
Although she's hard-nosed, she is a compassionate, good, person. She demands a lot, but I think professors should. The people who have complained about her on this website are obviously just unable or unwilling to do the work. If you enjoy cognition, psycholingustics, etc take a class with her... you may learn something.
I've had her for a few classes. Amazing professor...she knows her stuff and is a nice person. She is very understanding and helpful as long as you are someone who works hard. Although she demands a lot, she is always willing to read drafts of papers and essays-- there is no excuse for failure in her classes.
She is a horrible professor. Her classes are very difficult especially for a FIQWS course and she makes the concept out to be much more difficult than it really is. I do not recommend anyone to take her class especially if you are a freshman.
Dr. Tartter is the best professor I have had a City College. I've had 4 excellent profs in the masters program, but I can say with conviction that Dr. Tartter is THE best. Her teaching methods are effective - if you give yourself over to them you will learn so much more than you expected. She is generous, zany, and committed to your success.
Taking Dr. Tartter's class is like going to college for the first time. It's at times terrifying and stressful, but when it's over you realize how much you grew and how you loved it. She'll challenge you but she'll guide you. She puts in incredible effort to see you do well if you try. Take her class if you're serious about your academic strength.
If you want an education in psychology, and if you appreciate clear an concise guidelines and deadlines, take this course. Be warned: Dr. Tartter will be critical of your work. If you follow her advice and take in what she has to divulge, you will be better for it. She loves teaching, and it shows.
This course was my most challenging and rewarding to date. You WILL learn how to be a better writer, researcher and reader IF you commit to the heavy work load. Feedback is critical and CONSTANT but highly constructive. You'll be guided every step. The professor wants you to succeed and is quirky, energetic and brilliant in her field. A must take.
I found Vivian to be arrogant and rude. When you spoke to her during her office hours, she seemed to have no time for you and was very judgmental.
Dont take this class if youre looking for an easy A. Dr. Tartter is one of the toughest professors I have ever had.. in the BEST way! She will make you a better writer if it kills you. Yes, shes a tough cookie, but she makes the material engaging and fun. Would take another class with her again!
She is the ultimate example of what happens when students are used to get babied by professors. If you're a lazy one you'll hate her, if you're a go getter and work hard you would love her. She's the best professor I've ever had, she's straight and to the point, and she will provide ABUNDANT help via email and office hours if you're stuck.
Dr. Tartter is probably the smartest professor in the department, and if you seek education in Psychology, why do not learn from the best. Although material is difficult to learn, it is very rewarding to get it after a hard work. Her willingness to help is unbelievable and constructive criticism in her feedback highly helps you to improve your work.
Dr. Tartter will make you work hard but she will be there for you every step of the way. She might intimidate you but she wants her students to succeed not only in her classes but in real world. Her courses are challenging but once you are done, you will feel accomplished. She is a great professor who will criticize you only to make you better.
Dr. Tartter is one of the best professors I've had at CCNY - if not the best! She will provide you with TONS of feedback, so be ready to read it carefully and act accordingly. Don't be afraid to ask her questions --being shy or not communicating with her will hurt you in the long run . You will become a better writer and a better researcher!
I went to her for advising and she failed to inform me about a class I needed to take in order to graduate. I am now stuck in a summer class paying out of pocket. She arrived to the advising session late and allowed someone to cut the line. She was absolutely unhelpful and I regret having her as an advisor.
Dr. Tartter is one of the best professors I have ever had! She's not only a wonderful teacher, but an amazing adviser and mentor. Her lessons are challenging and thought-provoking and her feedback is generous and reflective. If you work hard, you will be successful. If you're lazy and used to being mediocre, you will fail.
Dr. Tartter is the best professor I've had. Her lectures are interesting, informative, and well-crafted; the assignments are difficult but rewarding. She cares deeply about her students' success--she expects a lot, and is generous with her time and knowledge in helping you master the material. You'll learn a lot from this brilliant psychologist.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! You often hear that her classes are hard and stressful. IT IS ALL WORTH IT! I have learned the most from her than anyone else especially at City College. She truly helped me see what psychology really is about and applying it in the real world. Do your assignments ON TIME, put in your work. The more effort, better the grade.
I took Cognition in Undergrad at another college and it was terrible. Taking her cognition class was a lot of work in studying, and writing an experimental paper in cognition BUT I learned ALOT in this course. Cognition was not even my thing until I took her class and loved it. She helped me the light in my writing and psychological aspects. :)
I took Sensation and Perception with Professor Tartter and I loved every minute of it. You have to work to do well in her course but she is available for help throughout it all. One of the most challenging courses I have taken at CCNY. She will prepare you for graduate school. Do not take if your looking for an easy A. This lady rocks!!
Vivien Tartter is by far one of the worst professors to take. She is definitely brilliant, but has absolutely no idea how to teach undergraduates, I assume this is because she leads the masters program and cannot separate these two levels of difficult from each other. Stay away from this class if you value your GPA, 2/3 students will drop at LEAST.
HORRIBLE Teacher. Can't understand that not everyone understands things first go like her! Uses useless textbooks that do not help at ALL!!!
This class isnt even required for my major! She makes things way too hard and even threw a tantrum one time by stomping her feet when a student tried to tell her that its ridiculous how hard she's making this class
I took this class because I thought it would be interesting. NOPE. Vivien Tartter SUCKS THE LIFE out of everything about this class. She's always trying to be funny and laughing at her own remarks while checking to see if anyone else is laughing. The book she picked for the first half of the class was horrible and not helpful at all.
If you want to take a class with her, make sure you have a laugh track handy. It will be useful when she pauses for laughter.
She needs to get off her high horse. She chooses favorites and does not acknowledge the hard work and effort from her "ordinary" students.
so tartter was an okay teacher. she gave me an A- but i dont think i worked as hard as everyone else lmao she is a nice lady i guess? to me at least. i emailed her a lot and stuff especially late at night and she was nice and emailed back quickly she said i could email her whenever i wanted so that was cool. cheers to the semester being over lmao
Work hard, meet with her as often as possible, and talk about your work in class and it will not be as bad i promise. She values hard work and those who follow her directions. She likes to talk to her students about her life which makes everything even more interesting. Dont be sensitive towards her remarks.
She's as tough as it gets, but she truly cares. If you can't keep up with her, you're simply not fit for a graduate program. When I think of her, I think of the term tough love: she made me a better student and almost killed me in the process. If you're over sensitive, find another professor to babysit you. She doesn't play that.
Prof. Tartter is the best professor I've ever had. She makes you work hard, but she's always available to help via email, and will work with you through every step of your papers. She clearly cares a lot about her students and wants them to do well; you just have to put in the work, and show that you care too!
Though It is clear Tartter knows quite a bit about Cognition, she should not be teaching it. Her lectures are all over the place, lack any effort, and it's really just her going off about her opinions on a topic. Since there are no real guidelines given, she can give you any grade, without any explanation needed. Save your GPA, avoid her class.
I am surprised they are still letting her hold classes. What she does is not teaching. She uses a textbook just to say she does but really her textbook is the Vivian Tartters Random Opinions on Everything text. And the information changes constantly. Beware
I wish theyd evaluate professors before letting them teach. Dr. Tartter is constantly changing her mind; One cant even refer to a textbook because it doesnt exist. She teaches the class however she pleases, throwing terms left and right. Speaks of validity and reliability but shes definitely not a standard for ANYTHING. She is sickening.
Dr. Tartter's is an extremely intelligent professor with a talent for arguing. If you are not ready to take your academic career seriously and unwilling to accept constructive criticism, then she is not the professor for you. However, if you are up for the challenge & willing to develop your skills in preparation for a PhD - she's your best bet.
No specific guidelines in the development of the proposal, the methods/results sections (you should already know that);lack of specific criteria for grading your paper (endless corrections, even if something has already been corrected);yelling at students (all are dummies);some must fail this class to prove that she is really tough/not for everyone!
Dr Tartter is awesome. I got what I felt was an easy A, but the majority of the class did not do as well. In order to succeed in her class, you more or less have to be able to converse with her on her level. That means you will be reading literally non-stop - often more than she assigns so as to understand background.
Is not clear on the guidelines for the proposal paper. Constantly makes corrections to a paper that were already corrected previously. She teaches the class however she wants and you don't even learn anything. I'm surprised they are letting her teach still. She doesn't use a textbook its all based on her opinion. Avoid her class at all costs.
This professor has poor communication when talking to a person. She is very nasty in her disposition and has no empathetic in her mood. I have no idea why she teaching psychology.
I choose to take her despite all of the negative ratings. Worst decision of my life. Listen to your fellow peers! Tartter is very mean spirited. She seems to enjoy watching her entire class squirm and stress over their grade all semester long. She also changes what she expects from you quite often. Its like having a baby as a professor
Vivien Tartter is the most disrespectful person towards her students. She is constantly changing her expectations even changing grades after they have already been graded. She speaks in a very condescending tone and belittles the students. She seems to purposely choose who to fail so to keep her reputation of "being tough." FIRE VIVIENE TARTTER
Im writing this because of how disgusting she is as a person towards not only her students but those who come to her for guidance. It's disgusting that she holds a position at this college when she inserts her opinions on things that don't concern her and she talks to students like they are people that don't hold any value. And she's a psych prof??
Communication is not the best
I wish I had knew of her reputation before taking this class, she is very disrespectful and has preconceived notions on students that WILL affect your grade. She has a vague syllabus, expectations, and doesn't communicate whatsoever. She was extremely rude to me and my peers, will never take again.
