He has an attitude problem when he teaches. He also likes putting students down to those who ask questions in his class. Overall, I will never be taking him again in this lifetime.
His neutral attitude is sometimes mistaken for bad attitude. He is so fair that he will neither try to help you nor hurt you. He let's a student's ability show through.
He uses the Moore Method, which is probably the only way to teach mathematics. Many people hate him but his way of teaching will allow the ability of the student to shine through.
goes through the material very fast. you have to learn on your own by reading the book or going to a tutor. he'll put you down and isn't very helpful. i'm glad my major isn't computer science.
Very subjective, unfair grading system. Moores method of teaching.
Didn't like him at all.
He went thru the material really fast and I always had to read the text book for more detail. However, he was lenient on H.W. part. Overall speaking, he was okay.
This professor was very unhelpful. He didn't seem to like the students. He would speed thru the material and was very unprepared for the lessons. His grading is VERY UNFAIR. Don't recommend him at all.
Had him for graphics. Learned very little of OpenGL. Was more interested in teaching math. Gloomy and aloof attitude. Seems to hate life.
****! He aparently almost solved some long-forgotten mat problem and someone found a fault in his theory.
He seems unapproachable but i heard from fellow students he isn't that bad during office hours. He is strict about note taking and paying attention in lectures and kinda dry.
I hated this clas!He shouldn't be a teacher because no one in my class learned a thing! He is boring, he gives hard test/quizzes even though the whole class told him that we haven't gone over it in class. He is unapproachable for assistance. I do not recommend this class!!! VERY BAD TEACHER.
Avoid at all cause. Gives to much homework and his test are extremely hard. He is not helpful and he is not approachable. He is a jerk. He does not care if you fail or if you are failing.

Akis is a very strange person. Sometimes he appears willing to help, while at other times he seems extremely negative. He is unpredictable, and gives lackluster lectures. In fact, he prefers not to teach, but to have students work problems on the board. However, he rips the students to shreds when they work out problems. Avoid him, if you can.
Avoid at all times worst Professor no humor, a rock personality, terrible avoid.
Eww, never, EVER take him. He gives lectures that are very confusing. He has an accent, not a thick one. He assings homework. Try not to procrastinate in his class. Or you will not pass. Avoid him, if you can.
THis teacher was at times very rude if you wanted something clarified during class.
very condescending. He's known to say things like, "That's not even a question"
he's not a good teacher... very boring and confusing .. he tries to sound like he know what he's talking about... but he doesn't because the whole class cant understand him....Time is like forever ticking in this class
People have Akis wrong about him being strange and/or careless about students. My own belief is that he is a very calm and relaxed person. He really engages the students to think, and not necessarily do work like robots via textbook all the time. Very analytical person. You will learn how to use your noggin in Akis' class. Excellent math prof.
I think Prof Akis completely lacks social skills. He is excessively rude to students, and disparages their performance in class. He also has class favorites. One guy he assumed was smart did not even complete all his homework but was given full credit by Akis. Whearas, for me he just gave me B on the homework without any justificaiton.
This is the worst proffessor I have ever come accross and he has made so many students drop off and no body in the computer science deptt is worried if some body is reading this comment.Don't ever take his class and you are gonna land up in hell itz so much of pressure i really insist don't take his class ,hewil make u cry nad have night mares
This professor is extremely rude and makes you feel like an idiot when you ask him a question. He seems like a total Grinch who hates people. I have anxiety attacks just thinking about his class!!!!!!
He is one guy who is the worst professor in the complete computer science department, he rather must have stayed from where he had come, than spoiling the lives of the students, hope if he sees this i wanna let him know that for what he had done to me he may face the wrath and curse of all the students he has made suffered. SOB. Thanx
He is an unusually good professor. His lectures are interesting and very clear. He strives for undrstanding in his students and gets across the beauty of mathematics. I took three classes with Dr. Akis, and each of these was a great experience.
He is not well prepared when he comes in class. He finished the course work only 35-40% of work what he stated in syllabus. He is very hard I don't have problem of hard professor, but what makes frustrating that he wants the solution of problem the way he thinks. If you write down other solution he never reads and you will loose total credit.
He inspired me and I learned alot. There was a guy that was constantly critizing Akis and I noticed he didn't work very hard and failed most of the tests. Akis is excellent - highly recommend.
He's an okay teacher I guess, me and a friend took his class and both of us had different opinions about him. I thought he was hard and my friend thought he was rather easy, we both passed it though I got a b+. But one thing we both agreed on was that he's a complete and total AIRHEAD!!! Just study and you'll do fine.
He prepares his lessons, but he is an ignorant professor who did not try his students who got lost in the class. The midterms were fairly easy, however the final was triple hard. He tried to make everyone get a bad grade at the end. Not recommend to go to his office hours.
he wasn't prepared for first day of lesson; at the he was prepared and he tried to teach three sections on the last day and expected his students to understand it right away. He did not try to show students WHAT IS MATH!!! maybe he is only for computer...not good at explaining...very impatient at his office hour, did not respond students' email.
Oh Dr. Akis. I can say I did learn a good amount from his classes. I had him for two classes in the same term (CS and Math). I worked hard and did well, grade-wise, in both classes. However, he just comes off as bored and disengaged. He trudges through the material very slowly. Ten weeks, Dr. Akis! We don't have time for you to be so lazy.
Akis - tenured and lazy. The department will be better of when he retires or goes away.
He is a horrible professor. Fails to teach nor help if you have any problems. Grades are based on his lectures and states the book is wrong. Would not recommend taking him for anything!!!!
Vlad Akis is an intelligent man (for the most part). Unfortunately, he cannot pass that knowledge along to his students. When asked to do book problems, his methods usually require a math intuition and methods that escape students that are learning it for the first time. He is be rude, and makes numerous simple mistakes like 2x4=6. Do not take.
Has trouble conveying the concepts of the material to his students the majority of the time. I don't think he even understands the material; ask him a question and he won't give a good response. Not only that, but he struggles to answer problems from the book. He may be good as a Topologist, but Calculus isn't his strong point.
He was not a clear and helpful instructor. To be honest, one of the worst I have had since I've been at CSULA. His first midterm had a problem that he attempted to do in class and couldn't finish... not to mention he used almost double the amount of time he gave us. Isn't that a problem?! Save yourself a quarter of agony and don't take him.
Akis lectures in a way that he assumes everyone has seen the material before. His problems chosen for exams(and final) are strange at best, he only offers 5 problems and only 2 of them contain a,b parts(EVEN FINAL) (no partial credit, you mess up 1 part,0 pts) you can get a B with 1 wrong. Only take him if you know your stuff.
Akis is 1 of the worst teachers EVER. In class he spends to much time going over simple examples & then assigns homework problems that are ridiculous compared to the class problems. He is incredibly unhelpful. You get NO feedback until after you have taken your midterm worth 1/2 of your grade. If you cant make his Officehrs to bad he wont care
Dr. Akis is very helpful and covers everything very thuroughly. Just go to class every day on time, pay attention, and do your notebook and you'll do fine.
He does really simple examples, then assigns ridiculous homework. He does not put up a solution guide or go over the homework ever, so you have no idea how you are doing until you take the midterm. He treats you like you are asking for the shirt off his back to explain anything.
1) He reads off slides, tries to teach but fails at it, he does ask if there are any questions but its useless because he still can't explain anything well regardless. 2)Homework is out of the scope, not a help for midterm or final and you don't know if you're doing it right. 3) His tests are straightforward but you won't know what to focus on.
When people complain about the tenure system in the CSU, they're probably thinking about professors like Vladimir Akis. Hands down the laziest/most unprepared teacher I have ever had. I passed his class, but I didn't learn much! I learned more in CS203, but that's because I had a professor that actually cared about his students actually learning.
won't any questions in the class. no help before midterm or final. 6 people passed out of 35....sucks.
He is pretty horrible. he seems like he would rather be somewhere else than be teaching. he is rude and looks at every student with a "GUILTY!" attitude
I have been told he uses the Moore Method of teaching. Well, does the Moore Method include makings lots of mistakes in class, laughing about it, and only correcting yourself when the students happen to realize and point out the mistake? Does it include being rude and putting students down for asking questions in class? Is this the Moore Method?
Would not recommend.
he is not that horrible. he requires you to turn in notes, so if you dont go to class make sure you have some way of getting the notes. he is kind of boring. if you follow what he is doing in class during the notes then you'll do fine. ON TESTS MAKE SURE YOU KNOW DEFS, HE HAS THEM ON THE TESTS. you need to explain why the answer is what it is.
Professor Akis is a very good instructor. Of course put some effort in class that is not easy. At a university we are supposed to study, we don't need study guides.
Avoid taking Akis for anything if you can. I've confirmed my opinions with other students who have taken him for MATH248 and CS386. He's an absent-minded guy who, while probably very smart, is unable to effectively communicate the material to his students. He also openly admits that he doesn't care for teaching. He grades really HARD and strictly.
Avoid,Not Helpfull at all, even when you go to his office hr, he just makes fun off you bc you dont know it or get it
bad time office hours so you cant reach him - respond irreverently and some times rude.
In his class I thought I took a Calculus or Mathematics instead of learning how to write a practical and efficient algorithm. Most of the class emphasis on gibberish induction way ,that's not gonna helpful in the future ! CSU system is base on preparing students for the market not teach them theory.
3rd time I've had him as a professor. He has improved slightly in that he seems more willing to help students in person and by email. My biggest complaint is that he is still unable to effectively communicate the course material. It didn't help either that all the content was based off of his own, vague, notes which were PowerPoint slides.
Pay attn in class $ review notes w/ powerpoints of the lecture that r there as a guide NOT replacement 4 class notes + work hard on HW (graded on effort not correctness) & u can get an A. Exam material fair & mostly from definitions in notes & similar to HW. Ask ?s & go to office hrs. He has a tough personality, but cares to see students care.
Puts minimal effort into class. Lectures read from textbook. Class could have been very useful regarding regular expressions (e.g., in Java), but he never bothered to translate the information into Java. No quizzes, just two tests. Could have just read the textbook instead of taking the class.
This teacher wasn't that bad. His grading is based on a notebook check (10%), a midterm(40%) and a final(50%). The difficulty of his midterm and final were pretty moderate and consistent. He's a decent teacher for linear algebra. Just do the homework and you'll be fine.
The tests disconnected from the lecture.
not recommended
The biggest problem is like he never checks your homework so you dont get a feedback and when you write answers in midsem he directly deducts your marks which costs you a lot in your grade.
Akis is boring. His grading requirements are a midterm, a final, and a notebook where you turn in homework problems that you have solved, as well as notes . He makes mistakes on the grading of the test, so you have to make sure his grading is correct. Not recommended. He is calm, but dull speaking, and looks like he should retire. Stay away!
do not recommend.
AVOID HIM!!!!
focuses on explaining proofs. does not allow electronic devices on during class, but we use lots of e-books now. He is stuck in the past in terms of technology, which is odd since he also teaches courses in algorithms. Too much theory in lecture, not many applications. He speaks in boring way, so you will get bored in class
There's 1 midterm(40%), 1 final(50%). You turn in homework(10%) midterm and final day. The lectures in class are straight forward. However, the homework DO NOT correlate to what was lectured in class. Most of them are proofs which are not taught in class. You can attempt to do the homework, but you won't ever know if you did it correctly. RUN AWAY!
Don't take him. The worst one ever.
to be honest i didn't like him because he shows no respect when you ask questions
I went to his office hours and asked him if I could redeem my average midterm grade, and he gave me the opportunity to replace it with my final grade. It does not look like he lives up to his words.
Do not write anything in paper outside his noted. Have to be accurate,to point and as he has taught. Otherwise, look forward to losing grades. Very tough grader.
Dr. Akis is a savage, but he cares so much about his students. He literally makes me laugh during every single class meeting. Just be sure to communicate with him on where you are and what you want to improve on. He will help you as long as he sees you putting in the work. GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
Take anyone else besides him.
Had him for CS4440 also. Teaching is doable but boring. For automata he gives 2 midterms and a final. Notebook with lecture notes and hw due during midterms. The problem is he doesn't give a study guide. Tests aren't extremely hard, but you won't have any idea as to what will be on the test. In other words, study everything he lectures. HW helps
Do not take this professor under any circumstance, but if you do then make sure to bring energy drinks to avoid falling asleep. Youre welcome in advance.
I can't emphasize enough on attending lecture. Reason being, he is a strict grader. You can only use the methods HE taught in class. So the internet is NOT your friend here like most other classes. Lectures are boring, but automata is not a hard subject. For exams, most problems are based off ex he did in class. MEMORIZE IT and you're good to go.
By far the toughest grader. Look at his reviews. There's a reason why this guy only has 20 students. The rest of them are in Jose's class who has close to 100 students. Drop out and add Jose's. I'm sure the department is just waiting for this guy to retire. Good luck. If you decide to stick with him then listen to the previous review. Spot on
This is the single worst teacher I have had in my life. Lecture time was mostly students presenting solutions. When he did go up to the board he made mistakes. You would expect more from someone as arrogant as him. DO NOT TAKE THIS "INSTRUCTOR".
Doesn't correct the homework and you'll only be able to tell if you're doing well by the midterms and final exams. Tests have less than 10 questions so if you get a question or two wrong, your grade is going down. Very condescending and unhelpful towards students during lecture. Do not recommend.
makes it difficult for students. Dont take this Professor if you want to fail. Removed homework three weeks before school ended and all the work before didnt count.
The tests were tough but homework is worth as much as the two exams. Exam questions were nothing like the homework though.
Trust me, dont take this professor unless you love unforgiving exams and "pop" quizes. He gives one quiz randomly each week with material that he refuses to state before hand. 15-30 of minutes each lecture (especially in later chapters) is waisted on basic arithmetic that he often makes mistakes He means well, but his teaching style is not for me.
A weekly quiz was given, and nothing was said about what it covered or which day exactly. There were no make-up quizzes or tests, and his explanations for the lessons were unique to him. Basically, if you don't spend 10 hours of your own time learning the material or come into the class already knowing it, you're screwed.
Gives a lot of homework, weekly pop quizzes, and his exams contain problems that weren't covered in class. He gives off an unapproachable vibe and stuck up attitude. I went to his office hours and studied day and night. I did receive an A grade but this class took a toll on my health, mental and physical.
