Summer '05 - great teacher. Gives you study guides and chronologies for the tests that actually help. Essay quest. are from the study guides. Sometimes his lectures jumps around, so just stay awake!
Oh man. He's so hot. Thick German accent...mmmm. Pretty cool guy but lectures can get confusing. Tests are not too hard he gives study guides the essays are the tough part but he lets you prepare them at home.
Tries to get too much information into class & doesn't focus. He berates students, even the ones that want to participate a lot. Very arrogant. Very generous w/ study guides which help you. Even though I'm gettting an A in his class, I still think he's a bit of a jerk.
lectures are unclear, reading is very borring, tests are practically impossible to get an A on, study guides are not helpfull only agrivating. Take Bakken instead.
Ok, he's hot, but don't think he doesn't know it. He is one of the most arrogant people I have ever met in my life. He is patronizing and condescending to students. Also, the amount of material he requires you to know is ridiculous for a survey class. This 100 level class was harder than my two 400 level classes. Cute, but has a lot to learn!!!
Very hard class. I went every day, usually couldn't answer his questions (which were often only answered by the history-major types). Studying for the difficult exams didn't seem to help. The papers were the only thing that reallly helped my grade.
Freakin Hard class. Such a mistake to take his class. His lectures are unhelpful and irrevelant. Readings are bland. I never got an "F" in any class EVER before until i took his class.
I thought this class was difficult. Way too much reading, but i thought that the essay promps were good because it directed you where to go. The final is a killer, but he does give you the essay topics in advance. I really don't know how i got a C+, but i pulled it off.
Really hard class but I learned a lot. Overall he's a cool guy although he expects a ton from students.
EYE CANDY!! A LOT OF WORK, QUIZES ARE A LITTLE TOO PARTICULAR FOR THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION YOU HAVE TO SYNTHESIZE.
His class is HARD! But that said, if you go to class every time, and take good notes, you'll do well in this class. He's just looking for students who try. A lot of the people who found it hard are the ones who never went to class or were looking for an easy ride. He knows a lot about the subject matter and is very helpful during office hours.

Good class experience if you do the work. Come to class with at least an understanding of the reading and you'll do fine. Not an incredibly hard grader. I liked him, he was pretty funny.

Just do the readings and you'll be fine. A lot of people in the class were too lazy to even read a few paragraphs, and sucked for them when we had to discuss the readings. Online quizzes everyweek, 4 essays, and 2 short identify paragraph tests. READ THE MATERIAL!
Good teacher, there are lots of readings but most of them aren't too boring and his lectures are pretty interesting. the only issues i had were with his annoying essay prompts(pretend your an author interviewing another author)and the group discussions which turned out more like mini lectures since usually only one person had done the readings.
The guy is tech fan. Movies, music, cool powerpoints - he really makes an effort. Lots of feedback on the essays. The quizzes can be a pain, but if you do the work it really pays off.
Interesting lectures, but all the work sucks for an undergraduate class. Too many creative essays for a history class. You also have to memorize a million different historical events
I enjoyed the class alot. If you do the readinds and just pay attention its not that bad. He tries to keep you interested and he was always available for help. The tests and essays aren't that bad either if you just study and pay attention. Its work, but its worth it...
He was an instructor @ UCSD prior to Fullerton, but this guy is the kindest professor in the world. Always open to help students with questions and needs on anything. He just wants a student that actually shows some interest and if you fail because of your own laziness, don't blame him!
Great teacher. It's obvious that he puts alot of time into structuring the class and it helps you learn alot. Very willing to help students and a fairly easy grader. A german teaching california history sounds strange at first, but hey we have an Austrian governor!
He is a cool guy who puts alot of effort into what he does, he excpects alot from his students and makes students participate as much as possible even when it is a lecture only class.
Get ready to do the work required of a 300 level class with him. His essays are vauge or full of too many prompts and he wants them all included, and limits page numbers. Hist study guides are an assignment in themselves. Lectures are cluttered and unfocused, requires you to read to learn the information and only does discussions, and the reading material is vauge as well and not in line with lecture.
His American Economics class was not that bad. He expects you to do a lot of reading for homework. There are quizzes online every few weeks and 2 take home essays. He is a fair grader when it comes to the essays, but you better not give him any less pages than he asks for. He is nice and sometimes funny. Although he is way too into teaching.
This guy seems to like thinkers, so be prepared to participate. He puts a lot of effort into his lectures and presentations, and seems really passionate about teaaching. If the class gets too heavy for you, he's plenty of eye candy to keep you content
True, he makes you work harder than most, but it pays off in the end. I learned a ton from this guy. He puts a lot of effort into his courses, too.
Great Teacher, but a tough grader. You don't get much for free in this class, but he really cares about you learning something.
This was a good class, lots of reading, lots of discussion and I forgot to mention, hard subject matter. The power point presentations were good, the class discussions were good, if you took notes and listened to the lectures, writing the papers was not difficult. Dr. Jassen is a great instructor.
Ok, that previous comment is hilarious. Even the course number is total fantasy. Whoever wrote this does not know what he/she is talking about. I am not surprised the professor thought he knew it all compared to that kid. Who doesn't.

Cool Dude, but takes this stuff way too serious. Mandatory attendance and if you miss he gets angry. Heavy reliance on text books. Weird class sturucture. Too much discussion.
Great professor, don't let bitter students bad-mouth him. German or not, he does a lot for you.
Probably one of the worst professors Ive taken. Expects you to know your history prior to an intro History class. Must raise your hand 17 times to get a decent participation score. Unclear on what to put in essays and grades extremely hard. Takes his job too seriously. You can tell he is an assistant professor cause he is a by-the-book type.
He is NOT an easy teacher. Yes you have to read AND comprehend it, but that's history. That aside, the workload is reasonable, he is very clear on what he expects, and the 4 people I know of in the class got 2 A's and 2 B's total. He is very intelligent and is receptive to the needs of students. I would take him again in an instant.
Really Interesting Professor. He has a lot to say, lectures are interesting, Projects are easy, but you have to do online quizzes which are really a pain in the butt. I did really well on the projects, but the quizzes killed me, they have much less to do with his lectures than I thought. Do the reading and you should do well in the class.
I did not enjoy this class at all.Participation was 25% of the grade, and every time I stepped into the class, I felt that it was a survival game.A lot of obnoxious people individuals were in the class, trying to impress the professor. The atmosphere was uneasy, tense, and not my cup of tea.Frankly, I didn't learn a whole lot about American History.
This class is not an easy A. That said, I learned a lot about California history in his class. He is challenging, and you do have to do the homework, but that makes you learn. He expects you to show up to class ready to discuss the homework assignments, so if you have not, then you won't have much to say during the discussions.
LOVE HIM! I am not a huge history person but I seriously loved listening to him lecture! Would definately take him again.
Pretty straightforward class. Expects you to participate and gives you credit even for a wrong asnwer. Papers seemed pretty vague in what he wanted but they were not too difficult. The quizzes were the most difficult part of the class so read the book and take the practice quizzes! Overall I enjoyed his class.
I disliked the class greatly. The fact I do not like history may have factored into it. I got a B in the class. You NEED the textbook for his dumb timed quizzes. No mid-term and final exams, instead papers which were easy. I would not take this professor again. His accent is not that bad btw.
I hate history but he actually made it really interesting. He is a really good teacher & knows what hes talking about! There are no tests which is SO nice, only 15 short online quizzes. Also, a short research assignment, group assignment (disscusion on blackboard) & 800 word paper - all of which are SUPER easy! Attendance counts toward your grade.
Can be intimidating at first. He assigns documents to read online and has class discussions the next morning, you get points for participating. I participated like 3 times and still got a B in the class. He assigns online quizzes based off the textbook, you have the whole semester to take them. No midterm/final just two at home essays.
I took him for winter intersession and he is a great professor. A bit hard, but I like to say that he is the definition of a good college professor. He gives a great effort and he just expects the same. For winter intersession, you need the book for the timed quizzes unless you can pick up all the info from the lectures.
LOVED him! This class was great. Keep up on your reading and participate. That's all he really wants. Participate a lot!! It's worth about 15% but he will grade your papers better if you participate more. He is really helpful. Our class wasn't getting it, so he changed the midterm to a 5 minute presentation. It was great.
Took him over the summer, and although it was not much of an easy class, I still feel it was worth a summer class. Great professor, very knowledgeable, quite funny. His accent is hot too! Anyways, I'm taking him again for History of California as well. I highly recommend him to those who actually enjoy history -- like myself.
You can tell that he is very passionate about the subject. But his lectures have nothing to do with the quiz he makes you take(once a week). YOU HAVE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK. His class is not hard but requires way too much work for a GE class. My upper-division classes does less work than this class. He also treats students like high school kids.
Janssen is great at giving lectures because you can tell in his voice he really enjoys what he teaches. Online quiz once a week. Must read TEXTBOOK to pass the quizzes. Personality wise, he kind of treats his students like kids. If someone sleeps in class he will stop the lecture. And if you leave early without him knowing ahead, good luck passing.
This class is ridiculous, he requires the class to do so much work for just a GE class! His instructions and syllabus are not even clear! He doesn't do or set up the online quizzes (that you have to take once a week) himself. He has an assistance that does it all, that you can barely contact if something happens online (quizes).
Best History Teacher Ever!!!! If you want to really learn, take his class. If you do well on the quizzes and make sure you participate and get to know him by introduction and comments during class, you will do great. He is a wonderfully thoughtful man. He changed many deadlines to help his students. He will work with you if you show effort.
Professor Janssen is the type of teacher who is very passionate about what he's teaching. This class was a challenge because there are online quizzes every week, two discussions for the semester, and just two papers for the midterm and final. No tests! If you start slacking on the quizzes and assignments, you'll definitely have a hard time passing.
Daily questions are based on the reading and lectures, only 2 or 3 a day. Simple online 20 question quizzes once a week. Only 2 essays: midterm essay and final essay...no in class exams! Lectures are really intriguing. Attendance is a must most of the time, you can get away with missing a day here and there. Overall a fantastic professor.
There are weekly online quizzes. 20 questions in 20minutes and there are 2 finals one midterm essay and final essay. Class is mandatory because he uses i clickers for participation. He is a chill teacher and is very clear on what he wants. Overall if you just put effort in his class you can pass especially the weekly quizzes.
It's a challenging class but I learned a lot! He answers quickly with emails and he is an approchable professor. Quizzes are hard if you don't do the weekly readings, essays are easy if you read the books he assigns. Very cool professor and if I have a chance to take him again, I will.
Dr. Janssen is a very motivated professor. He made our summer class very enjoyable and he did not just cram the semester into a month. He tells you exactly what he wants. The quizes are straightforward if you read the book and the essays are not too difficult. I'm taking his 481 class in the Spring because I enjoyed my previous class so much!
His comments are borderline rude. The feedback he gives on work is rough and if a professor is going to criticize a students work than he should be more helpful.
Great Teacher!! Super interesting and helpful, Class I easy, I barely did any work and got a B+, You can miss a class here and there is you need too, but I honestly went everyday just to listen to him, he really makes you care about history and is funny.
If you can handle a hard G.E. class, then take him. He's keeps you awake and makes it interesting during lecture. Funny guy too, but not suggested if you want an easy A. No tests, only online quizzes + assignments based on 2 books that you can browse through for the answer. Cool guy overall, but a bit hard for a G.E
I took his summer class, and though challenging, I'm so glad he was the professor. I've never been too keen on history, but Janssen made the class super interesting! Not only do I have a newfound respect for history classes, but I feel like I've developed better study habits! Highly recommended!
I absolutely love this professor! I took his class spring semester. He is very passionate about what he teaches, easy class to pass if you do the online quizzes, midterm and final are essays on the two books he requires. very nice and always available in office hours. very hot and nice thick German accent!
Dr. Janssen holds his students to high standards, but not unreasonable ones. The readings are manageable and should not be neglected. I found him highly communicative, approachable, and helpful. If you are intelligent, motivated, and interested in history his class is well worth taking.
His class is the hardest class I've ever taken and it's only a GE class. He's an awesome guy and passionate about teaching, but man, this class was no joke. i dont recommend this class to anyone unless you want to be burried in books and not have a life for a while. (books are always needed for this class)essays, quizzes, online modules.
This guy thinks he is an english teacher. Dont try to teach me how to write a paper. I'm in college, remember? His comments are not helpful and extremely rude. He expects the world from you, even though its a freshman class. We aren't history majors. Get over it.
Look, his class isn't hard. Read the book and you'll be fine. The only problem is that after he does that he starts telling you to do things that a) he never required you to do before and b) you don't know how to do. And then he gets snippy when you ask for clarification. And his comments on assignments are just downright rude sometimes.
Janssen is extremely passionate about history. He is very enthusiastic in his teaching, you can see it. He is very nice and greets his students. The class requires a lot of work, but it is very interesting. Group work is essential. Overall, a great class and an awesome professor.
Online modules and quizzes due every week. Midterm is a paper (but only body paragraphs). The final is an essay. You're put into a group and work with them all semester. Even though the workload for this class is rigorous, he's really nice and is passionate about history and wants you to understand WHY rather than memorizing dates.
Class was hard at first, but it got easier in the end. He is very responsive to emails and does care about history.
Dr. Janssen is the best professor at CSUF. He is extremely passionate about history and cares about his students. I wish he could teach all my classes. His class requires a lot of work, but the material is very interesting. I highly recommend him .
Laziest professor I've ever had. Misses so many sessions, he's lectured a total of 2 hours this whole semester, because all he does is assign books to read. Wasted time in class, we discuss the books we've already read for 3 hours in groups while he reads his emails and eats. Quizzes assigned during spring break or holidays. total of 8 books to buy
Seriously too hard for a GE class. This class is ridiculous, ESPECIALLY for a 100 level GE. There's too much to do for this type of class and his online class isn't great for communication, because his communication skills are lacking. Also be prepared to re-read instructions and possibly ask a lot of questions as his wording can be a bit wonky
Previous comments are true. He thinks he's an english teacher b/c he wants us to write it a certain way even though he's a history teacher, doesn't make any sense! If you take his online class, beware of the document quizzes b/c they're extremely tricky (got 37% on the first four). He does give decent feedback though if you email them to him.
The class is filled with busy work. Says you NEED the book, but got a C w/out ever cracking it open, wasted my money. He marks you down for answering opinion based discussion questions because it is not his opinion. Easy to pass class, but not even close to the amount of work it should be for a 100 level class.
Took this class for intercession online. You have to do 3 modules a week (2 chapters each). Tests allow you to get a 100% each time, but it takes awhile (hours) to get there. Document quizzes are tricky, and if you miss one question you're already at an 80%. Writing activities don't have very clear instructions. It's pretty stressful.
Dr. Janssen is one of the best professors I've ever had at CSUF. He truly cares about his students. Rather than simply teaching history, he tries to get you interested in the subject. He gives good feedback on essays and assignments . This class is not too difficult either. I highly recommend him.
The class wasn't hard, just do what you're told, read or skim the book and you'll be fine. Quizzes are time consuming and tricky. Latest edition of the textbook was "required" but 90% of it was verbatim from older editions. Despite being a History professor, he expects you to write a certain way and grades heavily on grammar rather than content.
Pretty average. He's very critical of writing style on essays, so avoid if you're not the best writer. Inquizitive assignments, 8 question quizzes, only 5 or so discussion boards, and 5 writing assignments. Not too time consuming or difficult. I didn't feel it was too challenging. A so-so class. Easy A for me.
There is a lot of group work in this class. Every week there are 1-2 group assignments. They're easy if your group does the reading and works well collectively. There is a ton of reading. The midterm and final exams are essays. I'm not a history major & I did very well. Prof. Janssen is helpful & understanding, and responds quickly to emails.
I've taken Dr. Janssen for 3 of my upper Div history courses and I am so glad that I did. He is one of the best professors we have in the department. The class is heavy in reading materials, but don't stress, learn to skim well. You WILL be working in a group for the entire semester and there will be classwork each meeting.
Avoid this class at all costs if you are looking to fulfill a GE. Not hard, just do all the busy work he assigns and put effort into the papers because this class feels like it's half history class and half English class. Grades very critically on the papers. Easy quizzes and modules that sometimes take awhile. If possible, TAKE ANOTHER COURSE!
Class requires several WEEKLY works: document quiz (12 questions. timed), lecture comprehension questions., book quiz via Inquisitive (open book, no timed). Plus, 6 writing assignments total during the semester, and 3 discussion posts with responses. Instructions for assignments are POORLY written: confusing, contradicting, vague, disorganized.
The online format was easy to follow. Felt like an easy high school history class, and was the "busy work" of my semester. Everything was really easy to do and just a little time-consuming. Most importantly, he gives feedback about the assignments you turn in. He'll actually tell you where you can improve for next time.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This professor goes out of his way to "disprove" the idea that GE classes are easy. I put in maximum effort this entire semester and did not miss a SINGLE deadline and I still will not get an A. Professors like this make you want to not even try because it is simply not worth the effort.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Took it online over summer. There is way too much work for a 100 level GE class. Such a hard grader, basically expects you to read his mind for what he wants. Lots of writing and work involved. Impossible to get an A. Incompetent in the English language.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! It is impossibly to get an A or B in this course. He has way too many assignments, homework, quizzes that you must complete. Plus, you have 5 writing assignments that he grades so harshly, I do not think anyone in the class got good grades on them. This course is more like an writing course. He grades very harshly.
How is this class a 100 level GE course? He grades papers way too hard as if this is a writing course. I feel like I learned more writing than I did with history. I rather take someone else, it is not worth risking you GPA or your time. I'd find a professor who cares more about the students outcome in the course.
I just got done taking summer course with him and his course was ridiculous. Super hard for a GE course. He asks for way too many things and happens to be such a difficult grader when it comes to his writing papers.
I think Professor Janssen is a very nice man. However, hes very adamant that just because this is a GE course does not mean it is going to be easy. There are daily group quizzes via an online forum that you have to pay extra for as well as two papers (midterm and a final paper). There are no tests, just the online quizzes. Very lecture heavy.
Unclear of what he wants for papers. All you will do is group work that is unrelated to the books that you read in class. He teaches the course for those that want to be teachers. He will "Cancel" class and still make you do your mandatory group work. He is the worse professor that I have ever taken and I have not learned anything from this class.
I have not learned a single thing besides that there are different Methodologies. Thats it. The online quizzes involve no actual things from the book, the assignments don't make sense, he grades harshly, group work is done on your own for the most part, and there's 0 clarity on due dates. I think by taking his class he's set me back a semester ((:
Great professor! I have never learned as much history ever before! This professor makes history so interesting and I am so happy I took this class. There is a quite a bit of work but it definitely pays off.
Janssen is my favorite history professor. He is accessible and will do whatever he can to help. There are no exams, just papers, and short weekly quizzes that are pretty easy. There is a considerable amount of reading, but if you can skim well and pick up the main ideas you will do fine. I highly recommend Janssen as he is an AMAZING professor.
This is my second class with him and he is great. He helped me with my tda outside of class and is a very caring professor. Online, theres is one day of zoom and the assignments are due before the next class. There is a quiz, between 1 - 3 busy work assignments, and occasionally a group assignment. The work can take between 1-3 hours to complete.
Is an asynchronous class. Has weekly quizzes and journal responses, 3 mid-term papers, 3 discussion questions (not that difficult), and one final paper. There is a lot of writing in this class, and you have to watch his lectures to answer his journal questions. Also, a tough grader if you don't answer his question clearly.
alot of writing, took it during summer class, you really have to put alot of work into it, honestly i tought this was a eas GE course, if u wanna get a ez GE course, don't take this.
Group work every week, same group the entire semester. 5 books, 2 of which are absolutely huge but interesting if you enjoy American history. PDA assignments are infuriating with vague questions. Would love if he lectured more because he is hilarious and passionate but unfortunately he rarely lectures. Do not take if you are not a hard worker.
He gave me a 10/100 on one of the assignments and said good work to me and he gave everyone else a 100, I had to drop his class after that, don't take him ever
He makes everything due at the end of the semester so if you pile up ur modules then it's going to be a lot of work at the end. It's not hard if you pace urself out and he's an easy grader. Just don't let the work pile up. I did but he was so understanding that he let me work on it even tho the semester is already over. Really easy and good prof.
Prof. Janssen's class was informative and set up nicely. Each week had lectures and weekly quizzes, and group projects every other week or so. Kinda gives vague comments back on work. He also checks your notes twice. He loves questions and participation during the class. Some inconsistencies between study guides and the actual exams.
Professor had great, content-rich lectures. One book read throughout semester while other three needed for group work. Weekly chapter quizzes and group work. Lectures complemented readings with occasional misalignment. Checks for handwritten notes twice. Midterm was multiple choice and written response. Assigns final paper. Definitely participate.
Way too much work and many of his assignments have unclear criteria. Save yourself the headache and take a different prof.
Online Hist 380C: -Assigns way too much work (hours and hours of recorded lectures with hidden passwords) -tries to confuse you with semantics on quizzes -does not care about workload of students taking 15 units -Tells you to follow a structured plan but that plan doesnt leave enough time for final -worst decision of my semester and I love history
I enjoyed his lectures and the readings but it is way too much work to do in a short amount of time. He had a one week grace period which was very sweet and respectful to the students time but he did not respect it the last week and he said he changed the syllabus day of and closed the class early, making it so many could not finish the modules.
First, I want to preface that I can tell this professor is passionate on what he is teaching. My biggest issue here is the amount of work. I had to take a week off from work to do the assignments! Over 120 of them and all of this is due in 11 days. Its too much! If you want to do a condensed course please have it to at least the 5 weeks. Torture!
This class requires a lot of writing, so it's not an easy GE. The professor can be a tough grader, but using resources like unstuck AI can help with study prep. Worth it if you're interested in the subject.
