Awesome Professor!!!

very organized, interesting lecture
Best teacher at the college
No Comments
tests are very hard! does not go by her own study guide
COOL!!
Common sense lectures then impossible tests out of NOwhere... very condescending, too.
Don't do it.
nice but hard
Easy, take her!
easy! no attendance policy. if you attend class, the notes help you out, but all you really have to do is read the book and you'll get at least a B! a VERY EASILY earned B. take her! She gives you alot of EXTRA CREDIT too!
Intresting class, impossible test
She is not willing to help her students and her test are rediculous
Worst teacher I have ever had. She is not willing to help, and tests for her 200 level courses are harder than 300 level courses. I worked harder in her class than I did in my 300 level classes, and ended up with a worse grade.
She is a great teacher! Everyone should take her class...if you take good notes and study then you should do great!
Test are impossible even if you study hard she expects you to know the most minor details and is not willing to compromise with her students
It was an okay class. If you read the book and take notes, you'll make a good grade. Test questions are very detailed. She is nice, but class is kind of dull. There must be a more exciting professor somewhere.
The class was pretty interesting. Teacher was okay. Her tests were decent, definitely read the book and do the assignments, they're pretty easy.
Definently not a hard teacher, just read the text and take notes. Basically an easy B
Like all the others have said, easy as long as you take notes and read what you're supposed to. Tests are simple esp. since she makes up study guides of exactly what will be on the test.
Great teacher and very enjoyable class. Take notes and skim the chapters and you'll be find. Easy B and with a little extra work easy A. No attendance policy and very easy to talk to. Definetly reccomend!!
Good teacher and fair but tough on the grading.
At first she is a bit intimidating but once you get into the class it is really very interesting. You really don't even need the book if you go to class and take good notes. Take this class if you want to think.
GREAT class. 2 or 3 assignments, 3 tests, i didn't buy a book and studied the guide the night before tests and did fine. interesting class discussions, very helpful, very detailed explanations, barely an attendance policy. easy, but makes you think
clearly has rethought the attendance policy since it effects your grade in the 101 level. but it's an easy course with multilple choice and short essay tests.
She is a great teacher. Very interesting but you do need to take good notes and read the text. A B class unless you work hard for an A. Multiple choice part is fairly detailed but the essay parts are easy. Good class!
A very interesting class. You learn a lot of information, and it isnt hard to sit through the lecture. No attendance policy. The only problem is that she goes over so many notes and reading and your tests can be really hard. I studied and read the chapters and only made B's on the tests.

Great teacher. Loved attending class even though there was no attendance policy. Tests can have a lot of info but if you've gone to class you'll do fine. Go over her study guides and you have the material. Even offered us extra credit, really wanted her students to do well.
Talk about an intersting lady - gives lots of anecdotes as examples to perspectives and terms. Tests aren't too hard, I've done well going to class about 2/3 of the time (B's). Offers good and doable extra credit, and is just a nice lady in general. Take this class...it's pretty interesting.
THIS WOMAN KNOWS HER STUFF!! Class is very interesting and she makes it fun. No attendance policy...but it doesnt matter becuase you'll go anyway. Tests cover a lot of information, but do the study guides and you'll be fine. Really enjoyed her class.
Shes a nice woman. Her tests are kinda hard cause she puts in questions that are totally off the wall.Know the terms and read the book. There are alot of stats that you should memorize for the test buts its kinda impossible cause there are so many. She gives an extra credit paper, but if youre looking for an easy A dont take this class.
Great professor. Easy tests if you've studied. I actually got a 100 on one of them.
Knows her subject well, but is challenging.
def not an easy A..there are lots of notes and you HAVE to read the book otherwise the tests will have things youve never seen. besides that, you'll learn a lot and it is a very interesting class. i recommend it. (no attendance policy!)

READ THE BOOK, and the multiple choice part of test will be easy. the essays are usually from lectures which are fun. she uses good antidotes. no attendance policy, but it you'll do better if you go to class. she's a cool lady who cares about her students. no matter what, just remember to read that book though!
Not an easy class. Have to attend and read the book otherwise get bad test grades. Material is boring. The professor is nice, but I would not take her again.
Likes to talk about herself and likes to talk during exams and quizzes to T.A. which is extremely distracting. Had her before and liked the class, but she is totally out of it this semester. Also often treats you like you are stupid when she is not explaining the material. The class was lost all semester and she was totally oblivious to it.
She loves sociology!
Interesting lectures!
She's not very clear with assignments and seems to get annoyed when you question what she wants. Doesn't alter her explanation, just states the same thing over and over. Not someone you want to take a class with early in the morning.
Very Knowledgable, made the class very interesting. Test are based on the book and notes. In order to make a good grade you need to be in class.
tendency to treat students with direspect when they asked a question that she seemed to think they should know
Great course.
Amazing subject and she got people to talk about stuff most people avoid like the plague.
She is very nice. The class material is extremely interesting and useful. Its a pretty easy grade. Tests are mc and essay. Read the book and you should also go to class.
Very interesting class. Read the text and go to class. Bakanic is great, I recommend any class she teaches.
This class is by far one of my favorite classes that I have taken at CofC. Read the text and go to the lecture and you will do fine in the class. Bakanic completely changed the way I think about race and ethnicity.
such an interesting class!! i wanted to attend lecture every single day and although attendance is not mandatory, she passes around an attendance sheet on random days where you get extra credit on your test for going to class that day. the lecture material was definitely relatable to real life family scenarios!
Sociology of the family-- I took it as a senior blow off class. I actually WANTED to go to class everyday, lecture is so interesting and useful. Seriously. Shes awesome and has great stories and make lecture even better. Tests are average, study!
worst professor ever. i actually withdrew from her class because all she did was president bush bash the entire time. she is boring and lets classes out late. do not take her. she is horrible.
I don't know what the other preson who rated this course is talking about. I think she is very fair about how she presents multiple sides on an issue.
omg, she thinks this class is like her therapy session. Constantly talks about herself. She splits out studies findings but then cant explain them. She contradicts what my upper level psychology class all say. Its an easy class but having to put up with her doesn't make it worth it.
Professor is definitely a feminist. Talks indefinitely about her private home life. Easy A if you attend class and read the book. If she does not agree with what a student says, will tell them they are wrong over and over- even if they are right. Likes you if you agree with her
Good class, interesting
I agree this professor is a feminist. Duh, it's a women's studies cross listed course. I think her feminist perspective is a big plus.
She is a WONDERFUL teacher. Anytime you have a question outside of class, email and she responds with a detailed answer. Very helpful and her discussions /lectures in class are never boring! Love her and her class!
Love Dr. Bakanic! She's a sweet teacher that maintains interest and doesn't grade too terribly hard. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities and loves her subject.
I had her in fall 2011. She knows her stuff. Buy the textbook. Attendance is mandatory. Only downside is that she talked fast and there was a lot of info. I recommend reading the textbook on top of studying your notes for tests. Very lecture heavy. Always willing to help (even after you have her as a teacher). Has some extra credit opportunities.
Very clear and sMart teacher. 3 tests and she gives study guides for Each one. Says she normally gives a paper but cut it out for the summer class. Tests are very sTraight forward and clear. Go to class read the chapter and shes easy.
At first seemed like a great teacher but has a stiff, outdated, policy for tests. If you miss one test you can NOT make it up even with a college approved excuse. She makes you take a cumulative final (while everyone else takes a regular test) and wont let you have the test you missed to study with. DO NOT MISS HER TESTS, she is NOT understanding.
Probably one of my favorite professors in the Sociology Dept. Her tests can be tricky because she wants the same definition she gave in class but other than that I love her. She wrote the book we use which is easy to follow. 3 HW assignments that are easy A's and she gives you 9 free absences. If I wasn't graduating I would take her again.
You're allowed 11 absences, but you'll want to go to class. It's really relatable. She's really nice, but shares a lot of personal stories you could've passed on hearing. Tests are comprised of lecture (powerpoint), textbook, and articles from OAKS. Do well on tests and final won't be cumulative.
She is really passionate about the subject, and the material is very interesting. A few tests that aren't bad if you study. She offers extra credit. You get 11 absences. She is deaf in one ear so sometimes she doesn't answer what the student asks, and she tells a lot of personal stories. I really liked her though and would highly recommend her!!
One of the best classes you can take. She is the sweetest, kindness lady on the earth. She is hysterical. She is helpful. She will do anything to help you. The best teach at this school. I would take any of her classes if I could. She gives a tone of extra credit point on attendance like todays my birthday 3 extra points, its raining 3 extra points
Prof. Bakanic is a nice teacher and she does give you help if you go to her office hours. Her tests are all multiple choice with two essay questions at the end (sometimes the essay questions are the ones on the study guide she gives you). Her tests are medium, you have to study. She does give extra credit. It is not an easy A class.
Her test are multiple choice with two essay questions but tricky. You have to study to pass. Offer a lot of extra credit. Not an easy A class. Gives random extra credit for showing up to class.
She is nice and understanding, very personal. She gives random extra credit. You only have 4 tests in the course, final is the 4th test, not cumulative. Because there are minimal grades, you have to do good on tests. she posts power points, but go to class. Also read the book and articles posted on oaks. Work hard, read, and go to class to pass!
This is the BEST class and the BEST professor. The class itself combines different things that you know but didn't know there was a term for it and is very useful to everyday life. Prof Bakanic is amazing and hilarious. She gives a ton of extra credit which boosts your test grade and you get 11 absences (extra credit for showing up to class).
Really sweet woman, lectures exactly off of the PowerPoints, the study guides are really helpful, gives extra credit for showing up to class on random days (rainy days too), tells a lot of person stories
Cute little old lady. Full of energy and personality. Class is only lecture, so it can get kind of boring but she wrote the "required text" so if you miss more than the 9 absences she allows you, just read the chapters you missed, they are literally her words. Study guides for tests are super helpful. 2 assignments, 3 tests, 1 final paper. Easy A.
Dr. B is one of my favorite professors at CofC. She's so up to date for someone her age. She's a foster mom so she likes to use examples from her life to make concepts easier to understand. She gives out extra credit like Oprah gives out gifts! She is also super approachable and considerate, and makes all of her students feel important. Love her!!
Bakanic is a really great professor! She posts all her notes on OAKS and gives you like 10 days to miss class. I really don't recommend missing that much because you learn more if you go to class and get better grades on the tests. Her only grades in the class is 4 tests but she does give random extra credit on days when you go to class.
I really enjoyed my time in her class! She made class really interesting because she would tell stories that made the concepts easier to understand. She also makes study guides for each exam. She gives random extra credit for showing up to class. Her attendance policy isn't strict. She gives other extra credit opportunities such as a paper.
She is by far my favorite professor at CofC so far! She allows you 10 absences and gives random extra credit just for showing up to class. Her lectures are very interesting and she really cares about her students. Would definitely recommend showing up to class and taking some notes, otherwise it will not be an easy A. She is a gem!!
Class with Bakanic is the best. She allows a lot of absences, gives really detailed study guides that are almost word for word what's on the test, and tells great stories in her lectures. She is one of the gems of the sociology department. Definitely take her if you can. It's honestly an easy A if you pay attention and do the study guides.
Great professor with interesting lectures. Although, her tests are kinda tricky but she gives a lot of extra credit to bump up a grade if its low. 4 tests, 8 absences allowed, and extra credit
Dr. Bakanic is well intentioned, but her tests are incredibly confusing. She reads verbatim off of 60 page powerpoint slides, each slide being two paragraphs of material, and out of all of that, about 30 percent is on the test. Even her study guides are misleading. She gives extra credit, but its only because her students do so bad on the tests.
I would avoid this class. Shes a great person but the exams are definitely not 100 level. Unless youre genuinely interested in the material the course is super tedious. Buy the textbook, youll need it if you want to pass. You cant rely on the study guide its really just a list of terms. You have to work hard for your grade.
Prof Bakanic is super nice, funny, and trendy for her age! She makes an already interesting topic even more interesting with her stories and way of teaching. Tests are a breeze IF YOU DO THE STUDY GUIDE. Don't get on her bad side though, or she will form a bias toward you. I commented on something that made be uncomfortable and my grade suffered.
I took this class asynchronously and I highly recommend. It can be a bit time consuming but lectures are very thorough and you have a week to complete each chapter. You also meet with her twice via zoom - super sweet and caring and really wants to help you succeed. Final assignment was a paper that essentially writes itself. Rounded my grade up
Her lectures are 30 PowerPoint slides that she reads directly off of. She then tries to quiz you on the material but does not cover most of what she teaches and her tests do not make sense. Her grammar in the tests is terrible and she words things incorrectly. She seems sweet and has good intentions, but does not make things simple.
She docks points off of assignments if you don't come to the conclusion she was hoping for. Every VT is read word for word from the slides. Quizzes are full of typos and don't specify the material that questions are referencing. Students don't get to see what they got wrong on quizzes. She responds to concerned emails defensively & unprofessionally
This class was asynchronous for me and I highly recommend. Every week there is a VT, quiz, and discussion post. You have a week to complete each chapter but you could honestly take 1-2 days and be done. The Final assignment was a short paper that wasn't difficult to complete at all. This class was my favorite as it was the least stressful.
This was a fully online class. Long voice threads, discussion posts, and a quiz for every module. We had a week to complete the work. In all honesty, I did not like the asynchronous class style, but prof Bakanic organized her class very well. Module content and due dates were easy to follow. I never felt behind or over worked from her class.
She is very understanding and cares about the class although she goes over slides that seem VERY easy but when a test rolls around, majority of what she covered isnt on the test and lots of never seen before information is. Even if you memorize everything on the study guide, the test questions will surprise you. idk how people do well in this class
I really enjoyed taking Professor Bakanic's class, it was very entertaining and I found the class incredibly interesting. However, I spent 20+ hours studying for each exam, I made 100+ term Quizlets, and I read the articles and still never felt prepared for class. She only has four tests and that's it, each of which is very difficult
I had a year ago , I would not recommend this professor. She does not teach very well and is unforgiving. She also grades very harshly and honestly grades unfairly the tests are very hard
She is not a very good teacher, she has no passion at all . Hard to make you excited. Even with an interesting topic she just ruins it. DONT sign up for this Professor . Shes rude, unprofessional, and very tough unfair grader.
Her class sizes are small , i would say thats a huge red flag for a professor. And for good reason. i regret taking her class she is not a good professor at all
Overall, the class was interesting but she is just too old. She spends half the class trying to remember which slide she left off of the lecture and ends up just going over slides that we already did. Complete waste of time.
She's a very sweet lady, but omg is she unorganized. Honestly if you have the option to take another class…do it. You only take 4 tests and they're difficult because of how they're worded. So if you do bad on the tests there really is no way to bring your grade up. You can (maybe) pass if you do the very long chapter readings. Freshman beware!😵‍💫
I really loved this class and her as the professor. She is so passionate and cares about her students. There are 4 tests total and she offers discussion posts and attendance as extra credit. After the first in person test, she made the last 3 all online. Overall, I'd recommend this class!
No homework, no papers, only a couple tests throughout the year. However the tests were multiple choice and needed very specific answers. First test was in class, and the rest were online. we were allowed to miss 11 classes so not very attendence heavy. Classes were a bit boring and the lecturing was just reading off slides so hard to focus.
She is a very sweet person but the class can get repetitive as she just reads from the slides. Only 4 tests in the whole class but attendance matters cause she gives extra credit for coming on random days. Would def take again.
Easiest class I've ever taken. Tests are all online and exactly the notes from class. No computers allowed in class so write all of the slides into your notebook and youll pass every exam. She is the nicest!!!
Worst professor I have ever had. She is condescending, repetitive, and teaches you absolutely nothing. She does not grade anything so you won't know how you are doing in class. If you try to address a problem it will reflect poorly in your grade. NO COMPUTERS ALLOWED. Hand written notes ONLY. Tests are word specific and very confusing. DONT DO IT.
