Loved Vurain! He actually teaches OB about how it can be applied and used rather than purely memorizing dates and publishers of papers. You have to go to class and listen to him, because he tests you on the stuff he talks about, and it's not all in the text
Bad prof. We have three tests and three papers, tough marker, a lot of work
Great prof and very willing to offer help! Definitely take advantage of having him as a professor 'cause he's so intelligent and just incredibly kind. Tests are very straight forward.
He is a great prof. His tests are very easy, but his TA marks group essays way too harsh.
Awful. Makes OB more complicated than it should be. Also most of you marks comes from 3 term papers which you have to write in groups. The tests are straightforwards but the essays are marked really hard. Avoid his class if you don't want to be stressed out.
I had Vurain for Macro OB. His slides are basically content taken from the textbook and he does test accordingly. If you read the chapter before class, participate in discussion, and go to class he will get to know your name. He really likes those who participate and think critically. The essays are marked hard but he is fair and a really nice guy.
Avoid this class, if you don't want a bad grade. A lot of work, given that its a second year class
lots of paper, preparing for those paper is going to take all your time. Therefore, going to get bad grade in other classes. Please don't take his class.
I took Macro OB from Vurain... Awesome prof! Granted, the tests and group projects were marked hard, but with work, no problem to get an A. We was very personable, dedicated, always available during office hours as well as before and after class. He always encouraged us to ask questions, voice any concerns we had and see him during office hours.
horrible prof
bad class, please take the class with a different proff
professor bad with words, dont take his class. Rude to students
Makes OB more complicated, Avoid his class if you don't want to be stressed out.
The group essays are what makes this course really hard. You really have to review your essays and have them make coherent to get a good grade. The midterms and finals were okay (but our class did really good on the first, so he made the second and final more hard). Treat him with patience and respect and he will treat you the same.
did not like his teaching style, also sometimes he imitates other ethnic people's accent. I think that is just rude. I got an A+, but I had to work ten times harder for this class. He made the class way more difficult than it needs to.
Took his class in my first year of post-secondary education. I believe I share the popular opinion of at least 3/4 of my class in saying that the entire course is based out of the book and attending all of the lectures is next to unnecessary. You essentially can just read the book, skip the lectures, and you're good. Doesn't respond to anybody btw.
Doesn't seem to really care about the teaching material he goes over. For his lectures he generally reads straight off of a PowerPoint and then will sometimes ask questions to the crowd. The labs for this course are mandatory and are worth participation marks. Is really vague with what he wants but is a tough grader when it comes to reflections.
Vurain is an awesome prof!!! A lot of people don't like his teaching style because he follows the textbook rather than making brand new material, but it makes studying for tests a lot easier!!! If you go to class and pay attention he often drop hints, and he is super helpful to any students looking for help in office hours! Highly recommend him!
Love Vurain! He is super helpful to any students looking for help, and his lectures line up perfectly with the book which makes it very easy to study for any tests. It's not an easy A class, you need to go to lectures and put time into studying and writing papers, but if you do you'll be rewarded with a very high mark!!! Highly recommend Vurain!
Very clear about what you're going to be marked on. Just read the textbook and show up and you'll be good. Lectures are alright, he's a safe choice. Very accesible outside of class. Good job Vurain.
All of the class material is based on the textbook, lectures are pointless since he just briefly explains the textbook but expects you to copy or remember his lecture speech word for word. Midterm and final were multiple choice but unfair since they include tricky wording, unclear questions or the answer could be 3/5 choices but only 1 is right...
He is a good professor, but his teaching style wasn't for me. Honestly you don't even need to show up to the lectures but they count for participation as well as the labs. The lab group work seemed redundant most of the time, and the group project was a pain. You also have to read a lot for the exams and grading and questions are unclear.
He doesn't answer any emails or questions, is never in his office & gives no clear instructions as to what he is looking for on any assignments, tests or projects. Tests are all multiple choice & on the most obscure aspects of the text, before tests mentions every possibility to be kicked out & receive a zero. Overall horrible professor!
Vurain has a lack of organization-skills. He encourages students to email him or to go to his office, yet he never replies to his emails and he is never in his office. The midterm class average was a 44% and he won't curve it. His expectations are unclear and the midterms do not reflect what was learned in class. Nice guy, but a terrible prof.
Vurain is a horrible prof and very unhelpful. He never answers emails and his lectures are useless. The only reason for the lectures is to receive points but reading the textbook is you best bet to pass. His tests are multiple choice but a lot of the time 3/5 answers could be correct. If I had the option to pick a different prof I 100% would.
Read the textbook. All the tests are based off the textbook material. The lectures and labs were a complete waste of time but easy points added to grade. Vurain isn't helpful at all do not waste your time going to him for help. He acts helpful but he really has no idea what he is talking about.
Honestly you could not show up to any lectures (many didn't) and still completely understand the course just by reading the textbook. I'd say the same for labs but showing up rewarded points and there was a lot of group work that required meetings. Overall, very poorly developed course, and a hard-to-comprehend professor, he was all over the place.
"A 70 means you're meeting expectations!" is the motto of this class, where grading on reflective responses are completely arbitrary, and exams use subjective language with more than one possible answer. I have a 4.0 in my 5th year of University and this first year course is the toughest mark-wise I've had the displeasure of dealing with.
Seem like a really nice person and wants the class to ask a lot of questions and create a conversation atmosphere. Not a lot of people did the readings and there was also a lab as the second class during the week. I hated his lectures. If you take his class prepare to have it be. Prepare to have it be the #1 class that takes all your time.
Has unrealistic expectations for this class . He highly encourages students to email him or to go to his office, but he does not answer his emails and he is never in his office when he has office hours. He seems like a good guy but would not recommend as a prof. Would not take this course as an elective.
Multiple choice only, strictly based on chapters from the textbook so be sure to familiarize yourself with them. If you're unhappy with your mark for your reflection, ask Vurain for extra marks. The group project - plan in advance who will do what and have a first draft ready to take to Vurain for him to review before final submission.
He is an amazing Prof, good lectures and won't bore you. Try to respond to his questions, and you'll be his best student. He is even supportive towards his students after the course is done ( like writing references, suggestions ). Midterms and Finals are based on MCQ, so get ready to buy the textbook cause your petty slides won't be enough.
Nice guy but he should not be teaching. Lectures are useless, a waste of time although attending is mandatory because he collects assignments and hands them out there, does not respond to emails and is never in the office to reach.
Not a very nice guy, his lectures are awful. Would rather watch paint dry. They are mandatory because hands out assignments that are due at the end of class that goes towards your mark. MAKE SURE YOU READ!!!!!! Don't even bother emailing him , not worth your time he most likely wont reply..... DONT TAKE HIS COURSE FIND ANOTHER PROF
-Lectures were often useless for the material. -Grading was very straightforward. -Very nice guy to meet with one on one. -Exams were all very wordy multiple choice. -Attendance is marked in labs and there is a graded response question handed out in 50% + classes that is due at the end of class. -Group project and papers graded very easily.
He's a pretty good professor but you need to learn the terminology to follow the class. That being said, if you read the textbook and/or take notes, you should be fine. There's some work done in class so if you skip you'll miss some points. You can go seem him outside of class if you feel you should have a higher mark on something, works sometimes.
didn't understand anything. huge class, he tried to be funny, teaches less and tests on more. remembers your name sometimes.
Tabvuma was the most difficult teacher I ever had, with a lot of homework and useless quizzes taking up most of the time. As the foundation of the management course, it really doesn't have to be too difficult for students. His examination was hopeless. I will never choose this teacher again. Unless it's all his classes.
His management class is a complete joke and is so useless. His lectures are not worth your time but be sure to go to the labs every week because that where all your marks come from. The mid-term and the exam were multiple choice but the hardest tests I've ever written as he tries to trick you with the answers. Not a course to take if have thechoice
I feel like people are being kinda unfair to him. Ok I agree that the tests were sometimes not relevant to the class and the wording is super weird. And I know that memorizing simple steps of a concept is just annoying. BUT, his teaching and vibes were all good. I strongly encourage you to participate in his classes. If you talk, you'll learn a lot
Literally just go to Lab, do the work and it is an easy A. The grading is a little tricky at first, but you're pretty much handed everything to get 100% on projects. The mid-term and exam are tricky, but if you read the textbook, you'll be fine.
Too much reading for this class and have to write way too many essays
don't take this class with him. He gives out way to many assignments and readings. The class is an easy mark, but avoid him if you can. His lectures are just him rewording the readings, so if you just read you'll be fine. His lectures are boring and he just rambles on.
I'm surprised to see how bad his rating is. I really like Vurain, and I'm no teacher's pet or anything. He does give the most homework out of all my professors, but it's not hard work, and I'm sure you could get by while not doing most of it. Mid-term is tricky, but easier than other courses. I wouldn't worry if you have him, just prepare to work.
Great prof, cares about students and gives clear explanations. Is also entertaining in class
Took this in Fall 2019. Not a difficult course at all if youre ok with writing a bit for assignments. The midterm and final exam are just a bit tricky, and I actually found the midterm to be trickier than the final. Overall you can score a final grade in the A-range quite easily as long as youre ok with writing and memorizing the text
So, I had to take him because he was the only prof teaching MGMT this semester. I highly recommend you avoid him at all costs. He gave a ridiculous amount of assignments for what we were learning and his Midterm was a nightmare. 40min for 30 multiple choice questions, and next to no time to complete it. Worst prof I've ever had by far.
He is a really good teacher despite the workload. In MGMT 1281, there was something due every week. However, the work was very easy and straightforward. His lectures were clearly explained and easy to understand.
Amazing prof & person. Loved his class, he was very helpful and his work was very simple but challenging as well.
The lectures are pretty pointless, it is basically just him reading the bolded and italicized points from the book. The lab work was simple, and you'll more than likely get a high mark just bypassing it in (little to no feedback on work). The exam can be quite difficult(study your notes). I would have chosen another prof, but he was the only one.
Boring, dry lectures with no useful information, just lots of 'this is explained in your book'. Every week there are so many random, useless tasks not related to management at all. They make this supposedly easy course as hard as they can, this was my least favourite prof/TA experience. Take it in summer/spring w anyone else if you can.
Nice person, but doe not know how to teach. Useless lectures, useless tasks, so much work.
Not a good professor. Expect a lot of um, like, you know in the lectures. Shows a lack of confidence. It is interesting in the presentation, it was taken in consideration if we used those filler words as well. Not setting a good example, if your professor does it every minute in his lecture.
A lot of these comments here are extremely confusing. It seems most of you must of missed the point of this course. Hes teaching you how to properly time manage, find resources, ask for help. Its called skill development!!! Anyway, Dr. Tabvuma generally cares about our success. He wants us to be involved, and be prepared. Highly recommend.
The midterm and final are tough so its important to pay attention during the lectures. It's also very beneficial to reach the textbook chapters. The prof offers a lot of extra credit options, but they aren't worth a lot. The essays are tough, especially if you have trouble keeping within a 500 word count or have trouble with APA citations.
Very nice guy but not a great prof. End up way behind schedule and lots of the lecture material is read straight from the textbook. Course was very unorganized and assignment dates would often be extended because of how poorly they were explained. Took long to respond to emails and often didn't post lecture notes for days after class.
Awful. Nice guy, terrible prof. Clearly does not know how to teach. Very disorganized course, with a lot of pointless extra work worth next to nothing. Very little guidance and brutal at answering emails. Didnt open the textbook or look at the lecture slides once and passed with flying colours. Do not take this course with this prof.
I took MGMT 1281 asynchronously with professor Tabvuma, so I didn't really get to know him. He posted hour long lectures each week, and also made you read the corresponding textbook chapter. There were a lot of assignments but they were easy. Extra credit was given if you uploaded your study notes each week. Class was fine, but nothing special.
The class was extremely disorganized and confusing
Do not take this class. I haven’t learned anything about business management, they do not answer your emails, do not explain anything to you. work overload, lectures that go on and on about nothing. midterms are so stupid, 30 multiple choice and you have 40 minutes to complete. so many extra assignments that are such a waste of time!! avoid.
Vurain lets you know is he views his students & himself as equal. He is understanding & easy to get along with. Much opportunity for extra credit & no surprises since the course outline covers it all. The essays are simple. Felt like a study skills class + a management textbook, & he is hard to contact outside of class. Requires a LOT of reading.
This is not a hard class. the exams are hard, but Dr.Tabvuma gives so many opportunities for extra credit if you do all the work (easy but theres a lot) you should finish with a good mark. I really liked him, he tried to get the class engaged, remembered peoples names and has some interesting insight and stories.
Vurain was good but not great. The class honestly was not very difficult if you take away the 2 exams which were very time constrained as you had 40min for 30 multiple choice questions which is next to nothing. He was a very nice guy and you could tell he had a drive for the class but it often was very disorganized and could become hectic to many.
Vurain gives a class that prepares you for the rest of your university experience. Without his help, I would not have adjusted to university life so well. Because of this, the class will keep you a little busy, but all the content is simple and bonus marks will give a great mark to those that do a little extra.
Great Guy, Very understanding and will meet you eye to eye. (Not literally) Though his lectures are miserable, long and disorganized. I was in his furthest behind class. We are 4 weeks in and we haven't even started chapter 2 due to idiotic questions which he responds with lengthy explanations of what he just taught.
Nice guy, boring lectures. Lots of content/assignments that are not really related to the course. Though it does help you in terms of getting used to university. His essays are weird, the topics are very open ended, and always required 2 peer reviewed references which is hard to find good ones that make sense for his obscure essay topics.
Vurain was good prof, and super easy marker. His army of TA's always were handing out 100s, and it's super easy to get 90-100 on essays. Lectures were lengthy and he gets sidetracked and ALWAYS lets people share their opinions, which made us fall behind literally every single week (if you were in Monday lectures then you know exactly who...)
Very nice guy but gets sidetracked wayyyy to easy. He takes his grand old time explaining small details during lectures, and then the TA supervisor Sheila comes in... I think he should get an award for speeding through the slides the way he does when Sheila comes into the theatre. Overall, an easy course but I suggest taking notes before lectures.
Although Dr. Tabvuma is a nice guy, the class is terribly disorganized, the labs are a waste of time, and there are a lot of small assignments worth very little. 2/3 times that I went to his office hours, he was not there. Although the midterm and final are not weighted heavily, they are SO hard and contain a lot of content not covered in lectures.
He is a good professor who cares about the topic. Very interactive during lectures and attendance is mandatory. However the test questions may stray a bit or go into too much detail compared to what was taught.
This professor cared for students, genuinely. However he makes the course lecture-based. Issue; Q's mostly from book. Question bank poorly reviewed. On final, 50% of the questions we never learned. Q's from older course versions too! I survived because I studied every single page of the textbook. Hardest exam- one you can't study for.
Very engaging, helps you to understand the slides easily, I would recommend going into his office a lot if you don't understand.
That he is a good professor
Very nice person but there is so much un needed work that he hands out every week that just shows up unannounced, the labs are pretty much a waste of time only reason you go is because attendance is graded. midterms are a CoinFlip on if you read every page of the textbook or not that determines pass/fail . Overall great guy not very good class
Most content covered within the lectures is not useful in the assignments and the lectures feel long and grueling due to the way he delivers the content. Not to mention the countless times where there were technical difficulties resulting in rushing the content because of said technical difficulties.
Exams require you to know everything from the slides exactly. In class activities so you probably need to attend every lecture.
I had him this year & I'm actually confused by some of the reviews. I thought he was a great prof, however the class is pretty content heavy - but in most cases it is simply common sense. If you attend the lectures or actually take time to read the slides (which he posts) you will do fairly well in this course. Assignments only takes 10 mins.
His lectures he says are useless, nothing from his lectures are in the exam its all from the textbook. Classwork is very easy but midterm exam and final exam are difficult to study for because no outline was given or what chapters to study from in the textbook. Just a very bad prof never answers his emails and very boring lectures.
As a person, I can't sing enough of his praises. he loves what he does and it almost acts as his downfall because during his lectures he tries to go into topics to such an extent for every slide we never make it to the end and the cycle of pushing the slideshows for the week prior and when it really matters during the midterm and exam its book work
I took this course online and it was very easy in my opinion there was just alot of work every week. Midterm and final exams are multiple choice, 2 writen questions to answer each week. Grading was very easy for everything. In person clases could be different but if you take this class, do it online
I found the lectures to be quite boring and not nessecary, as he told the lcass don't copy his slides for notes as they are for him and won't be on anything we learn. You gotta know the textbook in order to do well in this class but overall the class isn't hard. Just read the textbook, on a second note his lectures are pointless.
His lectures are necessary for points, yet the material is not on the midterm or final. Lots of writing/note taking for minimal points, the entire midterm/final are built from the textbook not the lectures at all. Every lecture is the same material just regurgitated. Lots of opportunities for bonus points.
Vurain is not a good prof. His lectures felt very lazy, and he made the course so much more unenjoyable than it should've been. He was also very unorganized, as he would randomly skip sections without letting students know, and the Birghtspace was a mess. If it wasn't for the exit slips at the end of each class, I would've skipped every lecture.
I took this course online and found the lectures really boring, and they didn't feel connected to what we were actually assessed on. The midterm and final were almost entirely based on the textbook, not the lecture content. I also had issues with completed assignments being missed and marked as 0, which was frustrating to deal with.
He clearly loves his job and his very passionate about his research and teaching. But the course was boring, too easy, and pretty unorganized. The lab portion often felt underbaked and lesson plans felt thrown together. You can get heaps of bonus points though, which makes the midterm and final feel more fair.
He is a nice guy, funny, and helpful. However, he is a bit too talkative, sometimes it makes the lecture a bit off topic and rushed at the end. His test will be fine if you read the textbook and listen in class. I don't like the lab and the activities I got to do in it, the TA was great though. Remember to take the bonus point, it helps a lot.
super chill guy, the worst parts depend on your TA but most people i know got easier graders, but there is always one or two who are too hard
he's nice but his class is so unprofessional, his class was my least favourite class i had this semester and if i didn't have to take the class i would've dropped out
This prof is a joke legit sucks at teaching horrible at being a professor honestly should stop being a professor super nice person though he just sucks at teaching his calling is not teaching only gives you like an hour for your final exam and your midterm he's like such a good nice person but just a horrible teacher
Horrible teacher in general had the worst TA of my life just Overall not a very good teacher definitely should stick to managing instead of teaching horrible teacher really nice person though.
