i highly recommend taking his class..he is an excellent teacher who is willing to help.
His lab class is a blast. He has a nice sense of humor that makes the 2-3 hours go by very quickly. Quizzes are easy, labs are easy, have fun!
Have him for my lab class. He is so helpful as long as you are paying attention to whats goin on. Gives lectures in the beginning of class to catch everyone up on the chapter we are on. He is awsome, wish he taught bio classes.
Bill is the man. He helps you as much as you want, and he is really friendly.
He's an amazing lab teacher for CHEM 101. Make sure to have him if you are prepared to do all the work and pay attention to what's going on. He'll have his days, but you'll get over it. He's willing to help and make sure you get a good grade. He was more understanding than my CHEM teacher, so believe me he's great!
He is an amazing teacher. He helped me out a lot. Will give you extra help if you need it - cares about his students. I would recommend him!
explains material clearly..never liked chemistry but he gives you everything that is going to be on the test in the notes and take home quizzes.. dorky but a really good teacher
Great teacher! I hate CHem but he really simplifies things for you. He's very easy going and will always help you out. Take home quizes and tests based 100% on your notes. If you go to class your fine!
BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER BROOKDALE HAS TO OFFER. BREAKS THINGS DOWN INTO TERMS THAT ARE EASIER TO UNDERSTAND. CHEMISTRY IS A VERY HARD SUBJECT. ATTEND ALL THE CLASSES AND READ YOUR BOOK. HIS TESTS ARE BASED ON HIS LECTURES. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TAKES GOOD NOTES. HE WILL HELP YOU WITH ANYTHING YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. HE IS VERY UNDERSTANDING.
He lives in his own world, very full of himself, very inexperienced. I think he has a specch impediment
By far the best teacher I've had in my 2 years at BCC. No bs, but he makes the stuff fun.
took him over the summer.. a lot easier than taking it at my school. go to classes, theyre boring but you get through it, breaks thinks down, makes it easy to learn, but good luck asking him for help on test or outside the classroom. doesnt seem very friendly
Very knowledgeable teacher, good help outside of class as long as you do your homework! Also tests are based off the homework, he will pick the hardest problems. And dont be late to class, its one of his pet peeves! Summer II 08
Bill is the man, everyone should take him!
He was a good teacher, however some of his explanations were confusing. One issue that I had was that many of the kids in my class were just out of high school and knew a lot of chemistry. I had not had a chem class in 5 years. He spoke to us as if we already knew a lot of the stuff, which I did not. He was open to extra help though.
Well i am currently taking bill's class in the fall 2009 semester, and let me just say he is GREAT. he has sat with me on numerous occasions for 2 hours in his office after our class ended. he really wants his students to succeed and that proves it. i am definately going to take him for chem 102 next semester. so yeah. -dave.
(Part 1) This guy can't teach worth a damn! He uses PLTL packets as an excuse to excuse himself from teaching the class, leaving people to struggle with course material where a good instructor would actually go over 2-3 more examples of the same problem. To me, thats the most irresponsible, and lazy way to teach.
I'm currently taking Principles of Chem with him and he is great! Anytime anyone in the class has a question or an issue with something, he works to help them out. I would definitely take it with him again. P.S. Out of the five reviews before me, the 4 negative ones are from 1 person. Just keep that in mind when you're reading over these reviews.
Boyke is an awesome professor. He has a way of describing chemistry that makes you laugh and to be honest he's never let a question I had go unanswered. I guess as a student it's a matter of showing him the best because he'll give the best in return. Take him for 101, 102 , or whatever he may be teaching.
Awesome teacher! A little weird but what science teacher isn't? He explains things very well and if you show him you're trying, he'll help you however he can. His jokes could use a little work but other than that I totally recommend this teacher!
He is a Great Professor. He isnt there to fail you but to help you. He makes Chem fun for me I look forwerd to going to his class. He know his stuff and is willing to help you out.
Brookdale needs more teachers like him. Actually enjoys teaching and truly wants all of his students to do well. Give this man a raise.
Bill is a great chem teacher! I plan on taking him for every chem class I gotta take! He wants you to learn and will do his best to explain things to you as long as you are making the effort. He's def a bit dorky, but he seems to enjoy what he does and that def makes time fly when sitting thru his lectures.
He's a really great teacher, I wish he was teaching in the Spring!! He explains everything in such a simple manner and makes chemistry so easy. Always does example problems and his tests have no tricks, straight from the notes. He always leaves a day open for review and questions before the test. Def. take him if you can!
Boyke is a great teacher who definitely knows his stuff. He allows a day for review before the test so you can ask him any question. He relates examples to everyday life if he can. I would definitely recommend him!!
This semester he decided it was a great idea to not give quizes and just give exams that he grades extremely unfair for example 20 points for one question. he knows his stuff but he sucks at grading doesnt really care if u pass or fail makes dumb jokes and is extremely irritating especially when he gives back his exams saying how bad the class did.
this professor sucks. he doesnt care if u pass or fail. dont get me wrong, he is a good teacher and knows his stuff, but his tests are ridiculous and every problem is worth a ridiculous amount of points and always has a trick in it. his grading is unfair. do not take this professor
terrible grader, knows his stuff but can't teach to a student who may need a little extra help understanding the more difficult material.
Great teacher. All lessons are very clear. He always accepts questions and will give help after class. His tests are hard but he is a fair grader.
Be able to do the most difficult HW problems in every unit and there's no reason that you won't do well. He is a tough tester, but a fair grader and good teacher. Has a twisted sense of hunor and can make or take a joke. He may not show it, but he really wants you to succeed and he is always available to explain things out of class.
Hard Unit Tests, but grades fairly. Answers e-mails in timely manner. As long as you study and do all the assignments and pass the tests/quizzes, you'll do fine.
best teacher! tried chem136 in the summer it was terrible!Bill is awesome very clear gives helpful notes and his tests are exactly what you learn BEST TEACHER TAKE HIM!!!!
Boyke simply puts the work out there without teaching. He is hard to reach and does not answer questions.
Good teacher if you follow along and take notes. Didn't use the text book much. Study the notes and practice the math problems and you should be fine.
Bill Boyke is hilarious. He will help you as an individual and he seems to have a nice heart. He grades you based off of you alone, there is no curve, which I admire. The book is only supplementary. Focus in class and it will be okay, the final was rough. This was the only class I ever got an F on an exam and I still like this guy.
Answered questions quickly and easy to contact. Study guide very similiar to exams. No reason not to do well on exams if you review study guide and ask questions if you don't understand something, I would reccommend
He is a very hard grader! Only Exams, No quizzes. He can be funny at times, but they're corny jokes. He does not care about you as an individual. If you go to him for questions, he will make you feel dumb or just not answer the question and just stare at you. Take someone else
Boyke is an amazing teacher. He really explains everything in a way you can understand. As long as you study the notes you can ace every exam. He is a sweet guy and has a funny sense of humor. I even debated switching my major to chemistry because of how great of a teacher he is. DEFINITELY take him if you need to take chemistry!
Great professor. You will ACE this class if you go to lecture and do his study guides before the test (they are basically the same AS the test). Discussions are online and are pretty straight forward. Google and Yahoo! Answers will be your best friend. Just go to class, do the online work, and do the study guides and you'll get an A or A-.
if you are trying to pass Chemistry and you know you are not confident in it. Do not take this professor he will only sink you deeper. Boyke is terrible and definitely does not care how you do...terrible
he has a weird personality. He displays the lessons very well in class. But, as far as test go they are difficult.
DO NOT listen to what anyone says. If you are a beginer in chem this is the wrong professor. He is super brief and he treats people who ask questions like idiots. His test are very difficult open response. No multiple choice. Any other professor would be better. Hes the department head.
This is a tough class in general so if you are a beginner and have no experience like me I would pick a different professor. He's overall nice but he taught the class as if we all already new what he was talking about and makes you memorize things other teachers don't, and yes, its a lot. He's also a little snarky. Can easily make you feel stupid.
I wouldn't take him if you are a beginner. I had a friend in the same class diff prof and she didn't have to memorize nearly half the things that I did and was emailed a copy of all the notes. there are easier teachers you can take. these reviews are very misleading. I've never studied so much and so hard before.
just don't. stop here. find someone else. don't do this to your self.
Obviously some of my classmates thought they could put no effort in and do well based upon prvious comments. Me and my friends studied, asked questions and went to office hours when we didn't understand something and the lowest grade any of us got was a B. Lessons were clear and the teacher was helpful and available outside of class.
The class was more involved than the same class my friends took with other teachers. Most of the pages that he gave to study were from other (older editions?) books than the one we used. Tests were taken in the testing center, many of the tests were very light, some of them were hard to make the writing out. I recommend finding a different teacher.
I'll start off saying I recieved a B. But, this teacher is a tough with exams. I agree with the previous comments, if you are a beginner try a different teacher. I studied VERY hard, put a lot of hours in, and still was struggling. Some people just click with it and some do not. He gives an extra test so you can drop a grade though.
Very tough class but it is chemistry aftr all. Tests were hard but based completely off of the lecture. no surprises. Lectures were very clear even though the material was hard. Drops lowest exam score. went to office hours once when i was confused and it was helpful
I am a good student however, chem is my weakness. If you have never take chem before do NOT take it with him. He does not care how you do. If you ask a question he will look at you like you're stupid. He teaches extremely fast. Worst prof I have ever had
This was my first college chemistry class and I felt Boyke didn't really do a good job at introducing chemistry for me. He expects you to know a lot more than just a high school chemistry class will prepare you for. His test are hard but his grading is even harder, he will take off points for every little thing. Ended up having to drop the class.
The work in the course was as to be expected in an entry chemistry class. The problem is there is no instruction at all. There are no video lectures; nothing where he actually taught chemistry. He supplied the (unhelpful and not descriptive) power point slides where you can teach yourself the subject. Prepare to teach yourself and use Google U.
Horrible. Took this class online which was a mistake in itself but never again. Had to go in the school to take examines and let me tell you, he sets you up for failure. Test are all fill in the blanks. Unless you are amazing in this subject to begin with, do not take this online with him! I had to drop this class after the first test.
All in all, the class is only as hard as you make it to be. You really have to follow the book and his directions and learn all the material for each test. He makes it clear that the class gets harder so make sure to start off strong and you'll be fine. I am not the best in science and I survived his class with a B-
Professor Boyke is an excellent professor. The way he taught each lecture made it easier to understand the difficult material. He tells you exactly what to study for exams. NO surprises. If you show up to class, take good notes and pay attention you will do well. He's very funny and spends the extra time needed for students to understand!
This professor was one of the worst professors ive had here at brookdale. He tries to be funny but in the end its just hurting the students. He was very boring with teaching his lectures, and set you up for failure almost every week
Tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed. Chemistry isn't a class you can blow off and expect to pass. I could have done wway better than a C+ except for the fact had 4 other classes and work part time. If you go to class and pay attention and put in a little bit of work you will be ok
4 tests equal your final grade, not including lab. So in the end each test is 20 percent of your final grade. He teaches in his own way, not the books way. The tests are 10x harder than what he shows in class. Extra credit at the end of semester can get u up to 2 extra points towards your grade.
If you're completely new to chemistry, I don't recommend him. However, his online practice tests are a big help. Studying from the book is a must. I found myself having to re-teach myself the material, but in the end, Boyke knows his stuff. If you have previous chem experience, you should do just fine. Use his practice tests to help you!
If you study the practice tests you won't have any problemsexact same types of questions. Just numbers and chemicals changed. Low exam dropped. Last exam open note open book. Should be easy A or B
Professor Boyke really wants to see his students succeed, but he definitely makes them work for it. His lectures are long and can get boring, but they are, nonetheless, effective. His wacky analogies play a big part in making the more difficult subjects a little bit easier to understand. Definitely recommend!
Overall, in order to pass the class, you MUST study the material by reading the book, and attending lectures. Teacher does not teach fundamental things in order to actually understand the material he lectures about. The tests are very specific, if you listen in lecture and MEMORIZE with/out understanding the concepts, you will do fine on the test.
Great professor I was new to chemistry which I was hoping to avoid taking but I had to as a pre-requisite to nursing io thought from day one I would have to take it at least twice before I passed but Professor Boyke really made it manageable and was so clear in explaining everything especially the hardest parts of the course he's a great professor
Stay away! I took this class online, and it was miserable. The slides that were supposed to serve as lecture material were minimal, vague and essentially useless. I got through this class by watching videos from chemistry teachers on Youtube. Beware of surprise material on exams, especially the final! This was an intro class, BTW!
I took this class online during a summer semester. Most stressful class I have ever had in my life! No joke- read the textbook from cover-to-cover and studied from the minute I got up to the minute I went to bed for 10 weeks straight. Doing well on the labs will save your life! I am happy with my grade, though. Bill mercifully curves the grades.
Made the mistake of taking Chem online the first time around. He wasn't horrible online, so I figured taking his class in person would be better. He's an ok lecturer, but I don't really think he cares if you succeed. I'm struggling and when I asked him for extra help, he got annoyed and he blew me off. Doesn't care if you pass, tests are very hard.
Good professor. I don't like chemistry, but it was still easy for me to get an A. Fair grading as long as you go to class and do homework. There were some times in class where he made me uncomfortable. All in all decent class.
Worst teacher I've had at Brookdale. His exams are nothing to do with his notes. Makes you memorize a lot of things for exams. The final was all open ended questions and he did not supply us with a review or study guide for it. If you ask him questions for help he does not care. Likes to set up his students for failure.
Professor Boyke is awesome. I had never taken chem before, ever. The tests are challenging but there are no surprises. Study his study guides and youll succeed. Theres nothing on the tests that he hasnt talked about in class. Drops lowest test score. Always willing to answer questions.
I am taking this as a summer course. I am going to be real with you. I was balancing this with a precalc class and a job. His class just wasn't sustainable. You have to sit all day for hours studying. That was time I didn't have. If I wasn't studying for precalc, I was at work. This class is something where you have to pick another course or a job.
Prof Boyke was awesome. The tests were challenging for me but very straightforward, no surprises. He answers specific questions in email very quickly and offers very helpful feedback. If forced to take any other chem class, would def take with boyke.
people talk to many lies about this teacher first at all he isn't funny he thinks he is but he isn' he answer me all the emails with attitude (which is funny because with my money he feed his family) he is a HORRIBLE TEACHER he doesn't understand any of his students and always offend them and more if you come from another country very disrespectful
Took CHEM136 online not by choice but during the pandemic, was switched to online. Literally we had no direction in this class. We were given a book and that was it. We read chapters, did labs and online tests were ridiculously difficult. When asked for help, got none. Dropped and will retake in fall with someone else.. Horrible online..
Online. Be ready to WORK. Lots of labs, 5 exams, quizzes every week. Drops the lowest EXAM, quiz, and lab. 2% extra credit to boost your end grade. Answers all questions sent through Canvas quickly, quick grader. STUDY, STUDY GUIDES! Exams are EXACTLY whats on study guides. YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK. You wont pass by watching the power points.
I would never take his class again. I ended up in tears and dropping his class. I took his Chem136 class. and All he did was give assignments and tell you what chapter to read. No power points, no recorded lectures, nothing. When you would message him he would be sarcastic & arrogant. This is not something I want to deal with.
From my experience, he and the co-teacher of my class would not communicate. He doesn't record the classes. It's just a mess, unless you can handle that try avoiding his class it's not worth it.
There is no way you can pass this class if you do not teach yourself. he does not take the time to answer your questions he will just expect you to look in the book and find the answers yourself. Would never take him again was very disrespectful.
Incredibly boring guy. The lectures are pointless, you pretty much have to read the book and teach yourself. "Reviews" are awful. He expects you to memorize too much in a short period of time when most it isn't needed. He says to memorize the periodic table for example, but you only need to know around 10 for the test.
Professor Boyke was definitely one of the best professor I have had so far. He is very helpful when there is questions. whatever he teaches, is whatever is going to be on the exam, no surprises. Lectures are fine, make sure you pay attention and write EVERYTHING down. super nice professor.
I don't understand why this professor has any bad reviews. His lectures helped me so much. He explains exactly what you need to know and what's on the quizzes & exams. There is nothing he doesn't go over. You need to take the time and study! He will help you if you're confused and answers messages in a timely manner. & There's extra credit.
The lectures were very informative and I didn't have to read the textbook. All you needed for the tests was in the lectures. He responded to emails quickly. He was overall very laid back and wanted you to pass. His grading policy was awesome.
Lectures are clear and thorough. Tests are based on lectures. There are practice tests for each unit which are very similar to the actual exams. Fair grader. I'm a returning student and was so nervous about this class. I have never been great at chemistry. I still got an A because he sets you up for success, you just have to put in the work.
Boyke is excellent. I don't understand how he has any bad reviews. Chem is hard but he lectures on exactly what you need to study for the tests. No surprises. Go to class, pay attention, follow the organized power points, study...you'll get an A. Lowest grade dropped. He says to read over the chapters, but I didn't need to. Take Boyke for Chem136
Prof Boyke is a great teacher as long as you listen to his lectures, study everyday, and go over notes like he reccomends you will pass easily!
I really liked his class. There were no surprises. I found the class difficult but not because of the professor. You knew exactly what was expected of you. If you pay attention and study you will be fine.
I had gone into the class not knowing anything about chem and walked out knowing what I had taught to myself. Extremely confusing. He rambles on from one topic to another and continuously goes off-topic. I had asked for help, gotten turned away, and was told too bad. He does not want to help struggling students succeed. Do not recommend this prof.
Some material he covers in his lectures/review aren't on the exam. His analogies help make difficult topics easier to understand. Videos are a good guideline for studying/practicing using online resources (you can get by without buying the textbook). Quick with emails, replies within a day or two. Sometimes his answer keys are wrong.
Does not care if you pass. Will be extremely condescending through email when asking for help. Class everage for tests was a 30. Will send out random youtube videos instead of powerpoint lecture with a voiceover. You are going to be teaching yourself everything. Does not budge on grades. worst professor i have ever had. 0 empathy for students.
Terrible professor. Keeps you the entire 2 hours and 45 minutes, will sometimes keep you longer. Tests are difficult and he shows zero remorse if you ask for help. Extremely sarcastic and thinks it's funny when it's not. Just a dry person, extremely slow talker and drags lectures out when they could easily be done in an hour and a half. Spits a lot
He has no empathy towards students
I learned a lot from this professor, I thought he was very reasonable and he's very thorough in lectures. He uses a lot of analogies to help understand the material. He is always willing to reexplain anything someone does not understand. I thought he respected and truly wanted his students to succeed, unlike some of the reviews I read.
absolutely do not take his class. he talks about everything but chemistry and if you ask any questions, he will literally call you stupid. makes unreasonable statements and his tests are extremely difficult and graded VERY HARSHLY.
This professor was condescending and his lectures were dry and boring. You would lose points for the smallest mistakes on test which would drop your grade like crazy considering the exams were 75% of your grade. He also didn't follow the plan with the lab class which messed up all of our lab grades. Do NOT take this class.
He's rude like really rude as a teacher and as a person. If you don't know anything about chemistry this class is going to be tough. Don't ask him any questions if you already know a little bit about chemistry he's going to tell you to take a 200 level class. If you don't know anything good luck. He's the only teacher doing this section
Thank god I get a chance to drop this class before the last day to make a decision. When I got into this class, it is SOOOOO boring. I never took chemistry before. This class is a very high level and I cannot accept this.! I don't know ANYTHING about chemistry.! To those who are in THIS class, good luck. If you don't like this class, DROP IT.!!!
Engaging lectures, clear content, and fair grading. With focus and preparation using resources like unstuck AI, this class is manageable even for non-chemistry majors. Attending class and following the professor's guidance is key to success.
The professor is pretty straight forward and literally tells you how to be successful in his class. He answers emails very quickly and is always accessible. Read the chapters, takes notes, practice and study and you will not have a problem passing his tests
Drop and went with a different prof and did much better
Professor Boyke is a good professor. He is lecture-heavy and has students stay the entire 2 hours and 45 minutes with a 15-minute break around the halfway mark. He can seem intimidating, but if you study and ask for help when needed, you'll do fine. I took this class with barely any chemistry experience and did just fine.
I genuinely think the professor does not care if you pass or fail. I can say with confidence this was the worst class i've ever taken throughout my college experience.
I have never written. review before now, but I feel I must in this circumstance to convey just how horrific this class is. The level of condescension coming off of this professor is truly concerning. His test scores and ratings perfectly reflect him as a professor. I hate to say it but if every student is failing the tests, It might not be them...
