His midterms/finals are quite a challenge.
very challenging exams!
unique, competent, intelligent, intriguing
Exams were HARD and VERY CHALLENGING!!!
Made life a living hell....if you want like challenge, pick him.
explains things quite clearly but tests are rather hard
Super hard, course is like self study
his speech is clear, but the material is so hard.!
good notes hard exams
he just repeats what's in the notes, not very clear
He lives in the West End; i egged his apt on halloween but think i missed

Excellet @ explaining.. however.. midterms and finals seems like another course!
Totally hard teacher!!!!
what's up with the hard tests?
AVOID bingle and biol
is it just me? or are his midterms and finals really CRAZY???
OMG..... Hard Exams....

avoid this maniac at all costs!

Exams are difficult, so study early kids!
Not that hard. Lecture is boring, repeats notes. Tests not too bad.
The only professor who asked us how we want the course to be taught. Great notes
Cool guy, clear logic, hard exam, but I like it!!

So boring he makes the material hard to understand
over simplifies the class, hard exam, not great but better than anyone else
The exam was worth 100%. It was BRUTAL. Enough said.
useless lectures, boring, over simplifies
He oversimplifies the lectures, and makes REALLY DIFFICULT TESTS.
clear notes, helpful too
Very clear. Exams are hard but he makes sure you understand the material.
easy notes, hard problem sets (didn't teach most of the questions)...
Arrogant and unapproachable. Stubborn. Useless lectures.
VERY HARD PROF
HARD exams; what's the point in Bingle just reading out of the text in class?
boring.
Notes are very clear, midterm was fair, not incredibly difficult but it made you think.
not very approachable. Very clear lectures, really hard exams. Attend his lectures but register in another section.
Bingle is excellent. A little snotty, very bitter, but he isn't there to be my best friend. I am so absolutely amazed at how he goes out of his way for students soo much. I wish he taught 2nd yr. organic :(
Bingle explains the material very clearly. Keeners love him; slackers hate him. End of story.
hard exams that really tests what u understand from his awesome notes...clear and concise
clear notes and lectures; hard exams
presents material in a really clear, interesting manner. exams are comprehensive, not nit-picky.
clear notes, clear lecture, hard tests... I mean, they were harder beyond hard! if you enjoy a challenge, take his class....

The best notes you'll probably ever get. Has a bitter take on life...but it's funny.
Good teacher, explains things concisely and clearly. Likes to test nitpicky exceptions and misconceptions on tests that he disguises as 'conceptual learning'. Nasty, NASTY exams though.
Excellent excellent note package. Buying the text is useless for this course. He knows the material inside out and he can teach it well. His exams are very fair. If you keep up by doing problem sets and understand how to make analogies, you'll be fine.
VERY hard to answer the questions even though they are open-book MC. he's very DRY . no smile at all. note ok.
very hard exams. wasn't very helpful and enthusiastic
****! ****! ****!
Repeating what's said in the notes. But useful in explaining what's unclear in the notes. Not very helpful in preparing you for the exam.
Notes are quite clear and useful, but exams are VERY VERY hard, just don't get upset when you're at the passing border line. But the exams are common to sections so should really say BIOL 112 exams are extrememly difficult.
very knowledgable and easily understandable. Very straightforward teaching style, albeit freakishly difficult exams. His course is a challenge, but you are sure to gain valuable knowledge from taking it.
good teacher, but a hard course
SUPER DUPER HARD COURSE~!!!!! He teaches pretty clearly but not efficiently...as in what he teaches doesn't really help u on the exams! SUPER DUPER HARD EXAMS! o.o'
Bingle's exams are quite hard, but thanks to him, I still got an A in the end.

Course material rendered completely useless by professor
He brought in the RCMP to his class once (some time ago) bc/ he received a death threat. I can sort of see why - a lot of the little things he does are annoying. But he's probably your best guide through his BIOL 112 text.
Hard course, hard exam. He explains stuff clearly, step by step. Do his problem sets because they are EXTREMELY similar to questions you would see on the exam. He gives clear instructions, but hard exams. Fair.
very difficult
He's a good guy, very serious and occasionally makes lame jokes. His exams are brutal and HE MEANS IT WHEN HE SAYS DOING THE PROBLEM SETS AHEAD OF TIME HELPS!
teaches easy concepts, and leaves the hard stuff which involves putting everything together up to you
Listen up ppl, bio 201 is a HARD course, no question. But Bingle knows his sh*t, and even though it's impossible to go over everything in class, he covers the basics and keys. To do well, i had to work really hard, but I got my money's worth from Bingle

The worst teacher I ever had. His exams are brutal and he is mean

No good!!!!
What kind of teacher would slam the door in your face? nuff said
If one person says he is difficult, it is debatable. But check how many people rated his course hard.Mid term avg less than 60% I see no future at our education system, guys. He knows how to teach? or his mission is to make life miserable?
BIOL 201 is a HARD course... this guy makes it seem so easy in class cuz he teaches well... but his miterms and finals go far beyond the difficulty levels of standard courses. He made organic chemistry exams look easy in comparison
easy course, don't know why people whine. i got 94% and theres no homework. real easy class if you are not dumb
LOL... it's hard for me... so I see that I am dumb (crying)... you got 94%? You must be a genius then I suppose? Are you getting A+ overall average? Do you plan to become a doctor? Are you a Wesbrook Scholar? Gosh I am so DUMB~!!!!!!!
got my mark! i got 96% sweet! class is pretty easy

He teaches well, although his exams are pretty difficult.
Be fair! He teaches well, but just makes EXTREMELY hard exams. The chance of seeing this guy smile or laugh is 5%. He's a real nice prof to you if you are in Micb, his lab class. At that point, You're more than just a student number, and won't slam door.
He's quite considerate of students taking summer 201.
Reasonable for a second-year science course.
This guy rocks!
Great prof. Helpful demos. Very tricky MC questions on exams though
I find him extremely condescending, and not very clear in his instructions.
hard exam; considerate of students
His lecture notes are quite helpful. Do the problem sets though, since his exam questions are a lot like the ones in the problem sets.
bingle blues... his midterms are way too hard... he's equivalent to Gateman... teaches great... but midterms makes me forget stuff I learned from him =*(
The midterm for this course is way too hard for us first year students, so his notes are not good enuf for the midterm. If we were still in elem. skoo his notes would be good. He writes the text for this course~not clear enuf! prob b/c tests r open book
Hopefully he's improved since 2000, but I still hold him to be the worst professor I ever had. Far too condescending. I emailed a question and had a snide response, signed "Dr. Bingle". Arrogant enough to ask on his midterm what his last name
He's a pretty good prof...exam and mid-term are not that hard...just do the problem sets and you'll be fine!!
he wants to fail everybody
Holy smokes, does this guy know how to SHATTER your confidence or what??!!?!
oh man, midterm is killer. I thought i could get A, now I just want D
he gives very neat notes and great explanations!
hard midterm!! very slow paced class. well organized notes. occasionally funny.
This man is cunning and lazy. He creates assignments which are only possible if you are willing to read his Phd Thesis, but gives no indication that all figures are taken from his research. His exams are written not to test knowledge, but to trick.
the class is too slow paced for the knowledge you are expected to know for the exams. Exams are written to confuse you and a lot of information is not even gone over in class, it is expected to be "self-taught"
The final was hard.
hard exam, not helpfull at all!
This is a difficult course with very tough exams! His notes are excellent, but you must MASTER the problem sets to do well on the exams.
A very difficult course with many things to cover. He does a good job of filling in the blanks, but a thorough reading and many rereadings of the materials are necessary to putting the pieces together and surviving his tough but fair exams.
the individual pieces of info in this course were not hard, but putting them together is a tough job. Final was super hard. Lecture was boring. he doesn't like to answer emails. even if you go ask him Q in person, he gave one word answers.
The midterm i found was harder than the final not to say the final was easy! You are expected to know a lot more than you are taught in class and if you don't do the problem sets you're in trouble because that's what the exams are based on.
I failed his bloody lecture... THANK YOU BINGLE FOR JACKING $400 FROM MY WALLET.... YOU COULDN'T BUMP A 48% TO A BLOODY PASS COULD YOU...
Dude he like writes out entire note packages with everything you need to know for the classes he teaches. That's pretty dedicated.
I barely passed his course although I studied all the problem sets and the notes (both from class and in the packages). He should show some compassion towards us, the students, that are shelling $400 to be in this course!
the course is super hard, but if u really hafta take it better go w/ Dr. Bingle...one of the "better" teachers for this course! *hint: his notes r actually really helpful review em' b4 exams.....
Doesn't give the easiest of exams but his lectures are very clear and organised; notes are well-defined and straightforward.
Most Arrogant Man EVER!!! The class is hard and there's no way around it. His notes are clear but still aren't enough. Require an immense amount of work and he is very unwilling to help in office hours
Hard and uninteresting prof! Answers student questions with terse replies. This guy speaks with no emotions at all just like a scientist who has no life and spent too much time researching. Prepare for finals or prepared to be slaughtered at SRC.
I found his teaching style effective. If you study and read the note packages and actually do the problems and understand them, then you should do okay.
This guy is still here? I took his class a while ago and got a B-. However, he was completely unhelpful and arrogant. I feel sorry for all future students...
He's pretty nice and receptive to questions during lectures. BUT, outside of lectures, he turns into an arrogant and unhelpful little man.
He says the exams are like the problem sets...THEY ARE NOTHING LIKE THE PROBLEM SETS. Not only are exams tricky but he's not receptive to questions at all. His notes are quite clear however...
I read his text, did his problem sets, and ended up with an A+. That's b/c he has organized notes and clear lectures - there's nothing to complain about. People only whine b/c they don't work hard enough.
Awesome notes. Kinda boring lectures cause he reads right from the notes. No way around it - his exams are hard so you better study your ass off! Can't really blame him for the hard exams though cause they scale the marks in the end anyways...

Very Hard Exams!!
I actually really like Dr. Bingle. He has clear lectures and notes and he makes sure that questions get answered. However, the course as a whole is quite hard and the problem sets are not much like the actual exams. But that is not entirely his fault, since the exams are common to all sections.
He gets angry very fast.. During class he's okay, but if you go after class for help, he isn't a really friendly man at all.. like someone else said haha.. but yeah the exams are freakishly hard.. too bad its a requirement for all grad schools ...argh btw. no scaling in bio112 >.<
I hated my other classes so much this was my favourite. His notes are concise and clear up any confusion you might get from the book. He is a bit arrogant but he answered people's questions in class. I didn't think the exams were that hard, either.
Contrary to what many say, Dr. Bingle was not arrogant at all. His notes were clear and neat - and his explanations were better. You could tell he wanted his students to understand the material.
He's helpful and easy to talk to in person, but his expectations aren't very clear.
He is very clear, his notes are pretty good. Reading his notes will help alot. He is a good teacher.
good notes and oral explanation. Really knows his stuff. Goes through material at a good rate.
Although this courses is crazy hard, he tried to help the students during his lectures. clear and concise notes. I don't know if he was nasty outside of class like others said but I would definately recommend him over the other Biol 112 profs.
Wade Bingles notes were easy and perfect. If you dont understand them then you are in the wrong faculty...or perhaps a little weird. Regardless you should have gotten an A in his class.Dont blame him if you didnt.
His lectures and his notes are super clear. Smart and knowlegable. Very receptive to questions and gives very clear explanation. Not smiley but not arrogant either. He did answered my stupid question patiently outside of class. Even if he is arrogant, it is forgivable since he is so intelligent...
Probably one of the worst profs I have ecer had. He is indeed clear - clearly not a good prof. I have never been treated with such arrogance and disregard in my time at UBC. He does provide a TON of notes - great work on these to be fair, but it does make studying difficult. Avoid if possible.
Not Kind to Student. He not like me much I think. He exam mark hard. I not enjoy class of him.
Awesome teacher! Had lots of fun with him. Was very kind and receptive to all our demands. Always willing to help. And was very deserving of his teacher of the year award the department of Microbiology and Immunology!
Awful prof sorry to say. Had a lot of notes that were far too detailed for the general concepts needed to be known. Surprising the guy has a B.Ed. too given his methodology. Worst part - just plain mean. (thinks people are too dumb to read between the lines I suppose). Made me HATE Biology...
Best prof ever! Super concise notes and very easy to understand ! Explain difficult parts of the course in a understandable and interesting way ! Very clever and knowledgable !
a pretty solid prof...not the best, can be slightly boring at times, but for the most part, he was pretty decent. The class is ridiculous(purpose directed to fail people) but he made it as bareable as possible and helped with all questions, i survived!
supposedly the best teacher that'll teach this course. he writes the exams so watch out, his english is a little off and it's difficult to understand which answer he wants. does give you hw occassionally to help boast your mark
Good prof. He presents his materials very clearly. You learn a lot from the problem sets, but most of the time, it's hard to infer the answers from your knowledge. Too many notes to read (from webct, textbook, his notes...). It's not his problem though, it is the way the course is.
I did well in his class. His notes are organized; however, his lectures are not so interesting. I feel like he should draw lecture content from more perspectives.
No matter what people say about him (eg. mean, arrogant), I still think Dr. Bingle is a great professor!!! Make sure you DO + UNDERSTAND ALL the problem sets and past exams and you will be fine!!!
Dr. Bingle is a really good prof, his notes are very clear and concise and if you do and understand the practice exams he posts on WebCT you should be fine. Got an A- :)
good notes. A few temper tantrums and hissy fit on webct about students' minor suggestion about his sample exam not being very representative. Very uncompassionate about a student's medical problem causing difficulty to attend exam. Said she would get a zero if she couldn't make it. He may succeed as a professor but not so much as a human being

do the stupid problem sets! at least 3 times over! for real, haha it did me well. bingle does make some pretty good quirky jokes yet he maintains his same stoic face. haha the biol 201 forums were hilarious last semester, especially when dr. bingle or his lackey would join into the conversations. quite a fun class, just do the problem sets
Problem sets took forever but it helps on the exam! When he was teaching I think I fell asleep alot b.c. it was so boring. Just do the PS then you'll be fine!
omg he makes the worse exams ever. seriously, boring
He likes to be called Dr. BINGO. Easy guy. I love him.
Found teacher to be too monotonous. Problem sets not indicative of exams.
Awesome Prof!!! While his isn't a good "showman" in class, he covers the material VERY well and that is the important part. I would strongly advise doing problem sets if you wish to do well on the exam. All that being said it is at 8:00 and so I sleep through it half the time. My fav. professor this semester.
he isnt the most exiciting teacher but he knows how to teach the material
This guy makes the hardest exams ever. It's almost like he wants you to fail the course :( and i thought first year courses weren't supposed to do that to students .. i found this course to be very discouraging and i will never take biology ever again
This is what happens when you get a prof who wrote the textbook... his notes on the overhead are almost verbadum from the text... so it's not much use. This is perhaps the reason why his lectures are so boring and dull. However, he makes up for this by giving free PRS bonus questions.
He is a very nice teacher...sometimes made nice jokes...And I love his overhead notes! Just make sure you study the textbook before going into the exam room and you will be fine!
he sucks.
the exams were easy if you knew the information in your textbook before going in, but i didn't find the lectures very helpful. he just went over info straight from the textbook, unlike other profs who helped add notes to understand the different concepts
Dr Bingle is a hard hard prof.. but a great guy. Very considerated of his students, you'll learn alot from this man.
Simply repeated everything that was in our text book
Bingle deserves more credit for his straight-foward teaching. He gets accused of rewriting the text, but that should not be a surprise because he compiled it. The lecture helps to get the textbook notes into your head. Don't bother with buying the optional textbook. Make sure you do the problem sets and you will do fine in his course.
Even though the course notes were laden with minor errors, I still found it very concise and easy to understand. There's not much sense in going to his lectures as he simply rewrites his course notes on the projector. But overall, a very helpful, straightforward guy.
Bingle did a great job (very straightforward, to the point) at teaching 201. Although boring, concepts were presented very clearly. Course package book was very concise and easy to understand. Overall, he's the best Biol prof I've ever had so far unlike most others who just give lectures/notes that are too broad and seemingly unrelated. Easy A.
I graduted from MICB in 2003... he was voted favorite professor... at first he might seem harsh.. but he's an awesome teacher.
Exams are multiple choice/openbook which would seem easy enough but questions/possible answers are quite tricky. Basically passing the course comes down to a 1/4 chance in picking the correct m/c answer. Lectures basically just prof re-reading text.
really boring
the materials are supposed to be easy, but i just dont get why he makes the exams soo hard....overall, the only purpose of the course is to make u fail and fell miserable for studying bio -_-
OK teacher overall. Teaches straight from the text, but does provide nice overhead printouts before the lecture containing some extra info or good summaries of text notes. Lectures are useless though - sleep right through them. Just study the text and notes before the exam, but study carefully cause exams tend to be tricky.
I found Bingle very engaging and interesting. I came into this class with horror stories from my friends, but ended up loving it! Tests are challenging (but not impossible), and hey, they are open book! so why complain?
Such a horrible and serious proff, or mabye the course is ,,but make sure you study rally hard,, sleeping in his lectures is usual!!!
Ok Prof. Really boring lectures but very open to questions. Exams are quite challenging.
OK this guy is really borrrring. How he talks about such interesting stuff in such a borrrrring way is beyond me. I was actually drooling in 3 of his lectures. Skipped many. Very enthusiastic and serious about what he talks about, but he talks like the textbook (which he wrote)... Course has tons of material... Open-book exams are NOT easy.
The Prof is actually very well organized. he gives you the sample exams one month in exam so if you do the sample exams, there is no way for you to fail in his course. He is a bit boring but i guess it's just the nature of the course. In fact, he has cut out many parts of the course to make it easier. For example, he cut the entire last chapter.
In this class he's surprisingly very pleasant and helpful. Great teacher for this course although when it comes to grading, he is extremely picky.
Um...Ok! Obviously you will do OK if you go to his lecture....cuz final and midterm aren't easy.
Unlike many other professors, he obviously specializes in teaching. Gives extremely good notes (in fact, he even provided us with almost complete handouts each class) and always takes time to answer questions in class. In-class demonstrations were good. Definately recommended!
Wade is awesome! His exams are really fair, and he makes the material interesting.
Hey. Biol 201 could've been a hard course. But thanks to Bingle, it's EEEEASY. It's so easy that you'll have to almost force yourself to study. Because the final is actually quite tricky. Overall, I like the things Bingle has done for this course. Way to go!
I like Professor Bingle, he's clear and explains things very thoroughly. Slightly bland, but gives a positive atmosphere in his class. The pre-prepared handout notes are very helpful for review, and are well laid-out. The exams are quite difficult, and a very good understanding of the material is necessary to do well. My best biology prof so far.
He make his lectures pretty clear, and the essential points are given directly.I highly suggest international students who feel uncomfortable at their first few classes t otake his course,he speaks extremely clear and easy to understand.Besides,he makes a lot of jokes, even in the notbook he wrote.i even enjoy reviewing his courses.
His lectures are clear and his textbook is insightful (apart from the child-like errors it is land-mined with). He is affable and receptive to in-class questions. But ask him a one-on-one question and Dr. Jekyll will unleash his fangs on you and suck out any and all self-worth you once possessed. Enjoy! :)
Course is not fun, a lot of memorization. Sometimes his instructions are not clear so that will make you angry. But overall nice guy, good prof.
What's with all the haters here?!? I had bingle for both biol 112 and 121 and i got high A+'s with little effort.Cant say the same for the other Bio classes where i got totally screwed over. His tests are straight from the problem sets (if anyone bothered to do them).
Almost all my classes could be supplanted by their assigned text books, except Bingle's. He is lectures present a level of insight that a text book could never offer. Most ppl think he's arrogant. I don't. Maybe he favored me. Regardless, for the real prospective biologists out there, take classes with him. He is a true master of his craft.
Don't take micbio 201 if you think its a pre-req for 202. 201 is a boring course in my opinion and i think everyone is penalizing this prof for it. There is alot of material to be covered and i mean A LOT. Much more than cell bio. Overall he is a nice guy but he doesn't respond to discussions and his test questions are very tricky even thoughitsM/C
He is one of the most ineffective, useless professors I have EVER had. I am an A+ average student, but he is one prof I would NEVER credit my grades to. His lectures are pointless, and I cannot stand his awfully flat and boring voice. He does NOTHING to enrich the material, or make the lecture enjoyable. The jokes he does tell are not funny.
Assignments has nothing to do with what you learn in class. If you really want to learn sth DO NOT TAKE him
Bingle does explain things very clearly. Gave us lots of problem sets and sample exams and explanations and made it seem like we had it easy.. But no. Assignments and midterm were hard, then you realize the material is more difficult than you think. Frustrating. I think he over simplifies the material. Probably going to be my lowest mark this term.
I have never had a more useless professor. Questions are poorly worded, notes are not helpful and do not help with the problem sets at all. Also, he takes forever to answer emails.
DO NOT TAKE BIOL201 WITH HIM. He does NOT stress the important things that we need to know in class AT ALL. Is not helpful when you ask him questions, just tells you to refer to the class notes.
One of my worst classes ever!!!! Honestly, don't take this course with him. I got above 80% in all courses this term and ended up getting a c- in his class!!!! He is NOT a good professor and i dont think its fair that students who are paying lots of money should have a professor who does not teach well.
The one lecture he didn't wear a sweater he got sick the next one and skipped. Has a nice earring though.
Dr. Bingle was the rudest prof. I have ever had. He seemed nice enough in lecture. However if I asked him a question I would get short, snappy remarks. I don't understand why he thinks it is acceptable to treat students so poorly.
He was extremely arrogant and wasn?t helpful at all. He takes at least 2 weeks to get back to emails and when you go in for help he is very short and isn?t helpful what so ever. His exam format was extremely hard and even for someone that knew their stuff, it was incomprehensible.I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone.
Very difficult class, material and ultimately exams. Your just a number in this class (it weeds out the weak) I went to about half the lectures but he posts his notes online. The notes were a good read, but invest in a tutor you'll need it.
I'm not really sure why everyone is having so much trouble with this prof/class. I read the book (which is very concise and gives good background) and did the problem sets making sure not to get behind. However, Dr. Bingle isn't particularly easy to talk to.
Don't understand why people are complaining. He's structured lectures to coincide perfectly with exam dates. Has a subtle sense of humour and is concise and to the point. Vista explicitly says not to email him for course material and to go to the tutorials available every week for students. I would take another course with him.
He is mean and a terrible prof. Other than the clicker questions, there is no use going to class!
Bad at micb201, good at biol201. Both courses have difficult exams.
He's ok in biol 201 but grumpy in micb 201 (8 am course). Exams are hard so study well and memorize.
Explain the concepts in a clear and concise way. He always slows his speaking in class, not that boring but sounds like refining the words to make the material more accurate and perceivable. Very logical mind and lecture being given! Appreciate that. Didn't try office hour tho.
Okay, maybe his lecturing style isn't as enthusiastic as some profs, but he explains everything very clearly and logically, which is the most important thing. He's not an easy prof, which is good in my opinion- his questions will challenge you and make you really understand the material.
Very boring prof, fell asleep more often than not in his class. Everything in the textbook is apparently wrong and everything he said was right; so no point buying a textbook for his class. Midterms weren't that bad but final was pretty hard. Monotone prof, would avoid if possible.
Not going to tell you not to take this class because for many biology students it is a requirement. I will however warn that the material is extremely dry so get ready to pin your eyes open. Prof reads straight from slides which are straight from book. Exams don't relate well to lecture material. Doesn't speak with enthusiasm.. morning person? nope
Dr. Bingle should not be a professor. He doesn't respect his students. Very condescending and rude if you ask questions. His exam material come out of left field and doesn't matter if you read the entire textbook and went to class. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A GOOD GPA! I switched majors because he would have become my main prof.
No rubric or feedback for assignments which worth a lot! Lectures are basically the same as the textbook (since he wrote the custom textbook), both are very boring. But the worst is that the word choice, grammar, syntax and organization of the topics makes the book extremely confusing. Unfortunately he is the only prof teaching this term.
I am an A+ student (90-100%)for all my biology, chemistry, and microbiology classes (MICB202) so far (second year). This class is the hardest class I have ever taken, because the organization of the content is confusing and I have to spend a lot of time re-organizing it. Plus, the material are dry and the exam questions are not meaningful at all
Chill out, folks... Maybe he doesn't clown around during lectures like some profs (his subtle sense of humour though!), but he is surely not crude or insolent. He makes you think. Tests may seem tough, but they are more than manageable, since his notes and textbook are very clear. Plus, you ask a question and get an equally straightforward answer.
This is the second time I've had Dr. Bingle as a prof, and let me tell you, I'd forgotten why I hated BIOL 112 so much in first year. While the material in MICB 201 was quite interesting overall, his exam questions were HARD, and I wasn't sure how to study for the metabolism section. I just hope I passed the final.
Going to his class is a lot like taking rohypnol. Exams don't relate to lectures, so using the textbook becomes pointless too. He is lazy, arrogant, morose and will most likely laugh in your face if you ask him a question he deems "dumb", even though the course material is already hard enough.
Stay away if possible! I'm pretty sure he is the only instructor teaching Micb 201, but don't take this course if you don't have to! Long story short, he'll make you hate microbiology, science and generally university!
Honestly speaking, he is not as bad as what others may think. You have to give him some credits, the course itself contains a lot of material and is not really a very interesting course to begin with. You have to attend to class in order to pass (hard to stay awake in the morning). He is very clear with his lectures and test material.
I really enjoyed this course but I think it depends on your personal preference towards the subject. I really liked the material from this course so the whole course including the lectures were really interesting. His lectures can seem a little bit slow, but that also means that if you pay attention in class, it's easy to understand everything.
JUST AVOID TAKING THIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE (drains your soul) Makes you buy the "new edition" even if its the next semester in the same academic year. Some exams are open book but it's pretty much useless considering it doesn't provide adequate information for you to answer the questions properly and lectures aren't the most useful either.
I personally found the course material to be very interesting, and though Dr. Bingle isn't the most enthusiastic lecturer, he makes the slides very clear. Just try to do the pre-readings to keep up in lectures!
Not a bad prof, just the material was boring af and the 8am lectures didn't help. As long as you know how to use the text, the class should be fairly straightforward
Wrote his own textbook for 20$ (which is great!!) Isn't the best lecturer as he reads of slides at most times but I found his clicker question answers to be vague. Also didn't say when you could click in or when he would stop the timer - hard when later content became more mathematical. Open book mt and final
Pretty much one of the worst classes I've taken. I definitely didn't like how it was structured and the lectures were very vague and uninteresting. Avoid if you can.
nice enough guy and fair tests but SO BORING and lectures are 8am with clickers worth 10% of the grade
The professor shows little interest in the subject matter and looks like he would rather be anywhere else but in class. He does not have office hours evident of his lack of care for the students' learning. When you DO book office hours, he doesn't help at all. You're forced into lectures because of iClicker marks (10% participation).
The material for this course is super dry, and there's only one 8 am class for the entire year. Honestly, don't take this unless you absolutely have to.
It wasn't that Bingle is terrible but more because the course is at 8AM and he has a relatively monotone voice. He made the clicker optional (thank god) and you can do decently by just studying the textbook. I went to office hour a few time and he was really helpful
Honestly the worst! Literally just puts the same things in the lectures that are in the textbook word for word. Like am I paying 500 something for you to read the textbook to me? Didn't really do much to make the class engaging; one of those classes you went to just to get the participation mark.
Honestly it was one of those required classes with only one instructor so there is no other choice. Otherwise I would have never ever taken his class. Super boring and everything is straight out of the textbook. He shows no enthusiasm or interest in the materials at all so don't even talk about any care for the students.
Honestly if you don't need to take it, DON'T. Lectures are dreadful and Prof just reads the slides. He only covers some of the stuff we need to know though, there is so much MORE you have to read on your own. I'm revising for midterm and so much of it isn't covered in lectures. 8 AM classes too come on why?
Professor reads word for word from his lecture slides which are the exact same as the text. He shows zero enthusiasm for the course and does not show any care for the students taking it. If you email him with questions on course content be prepared for a condescending reply as he is quite rude and does not care to help.
easily the worst prof i've had at UBC. going to his lectures is useless b/c he just reads from the textbook. even though i found the material super interesting the way he presents it is so dry that i had no motivation to go to class. plus his multiple choice questions are confusing and don't test understanding well. AVOID!
The course is interesting but there is a lot of information covered that might be overwhelming for students without a science background. He is very organized, a little awkward but willing to help and sometimes tries to make jokes. Lots of practice problems, optional clickers, 5 online quizzes all helpful. Stay on top of the online readings ...
Bingle is possibly my least favourite prof I've had at UBC. His lectures are so dry I nearly fell asleep in every single class. Not to mention that he wastes so much time speaking about irrelevant topics that he doesn't cover all the content in class, so you have to teach yourself from the textbook anyways. Don't take MICB 201 unless required to
People attended the first lecture then stopped going to class. Taught myself the course with the textbook + learning objectives. Bad prof, lectures were not engaging or helpful. Good thing the midterm and final were not difficult, all multiple choice. Avoid this course if possible.
This course was very disappointing and uninspiring, to say the least. I understand that it's an 8am course twice a week, but it doesn't help when the prof shows absolutely zero enthusiasm for the content or provides any extra information outside of the lecture slides, which seem to be taken from the textbook verbatim.
Very unclear instructions with the transition to online classes due to COVID. With almost 1/3 of the examinable material is not covered in class, he also does a bad job explaining concepts and is not enthusiastic about the things he teaches, making an 8am course even more boring. Would recommend avoiding this class if possible
For online class, he made the course distance ed basically. He says to contact him through email but does not reply until a week later. In his replies, it seems as though he does not actually read your question. Do not recommend taking an online course with him.
He made no effort to make the class engaging. The lectures were not helpful and he would offer no assistance to students.
Does not care about his students at all. Class was asynchronous, so basically had to teach ourselves the whole course. Would not recommend taking it online. Wait till classes are back to normal again.
Dr. Bingle was one of the worst professors I've had the displeasure of meeting in my university career. Exceedingly inconsiderate toward his students and disorganized while also lacking passion for course material. Would not touch another of his classes with a 5-foot pole.
Worst prof I've encountered at UBC The entire course was basically reading the textbook MC questions are extremely confusing and easy to slip up DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU NEED TO
dont take this class unless you really have to.
Teaching quality aside, Dr. Bingle DID NOT respond to emails informing him of academic integrity violations. Made no effort to prevent cheating on quizzes, which were worth 70% of your course mark. There are profs who trust students to be honest, and then there's profs who couldn't care less -- punishing those who refuse to cheat.
Bingle is in my top 3 of worst professors in the faculty of biology. Do not take his course. He is dry, un-motivated, not supportive, does not care about his students, does not care what others have to say. He will talk over you or be demeaning towards you. You can go to office hours, but he will say-- 'I went over that question in class already'.
If you don't have to take this course, stop reading here and just don't do it. For all you micb majors, just get the text and memorize it word for word in advance. He will NOT teach you anything, he will just summarize what is in the text word for word. No learning activities except for a few hw questions. Quizzes are HARD. Lectures dry and SO SLOW
He is one of the WORST professors I have ever had at UBC. During this pandemic, he just showed up to the first class and said that he doesn't like the online format and he won't teach live. He just posted videos of him reading WORD BY WORD off the textbook. Each question of his quizzes 1% of overall grade!! There was no room for error. HORRIBLE!!
Dr. Bingle was very accessible and held regular office hours in addition to the asynchronous lectures.
I'm honestly so confused by this prof like??? I've never seen him after the first day of class. He made it seem like he didn't care at all so why is he even teaching this course. basically self-learned everything. his recorded lectures were useless and were basically a regurgitation of the textbook
He might be better with the in-class format but online, he was terrible. His lectures were him just reading word for word from the slides. His quizzes and tests were terrible and he expected us to answer questions that didn't make sense half the time.
Took the course online during COVID, and he only provided recorded lectures plus a single office hour a week to ask questions. Lectures were so slow and dry that I had to watch them on 2x speed, but reading the free textbook would have been a better use of my time. Final exam was multiple choice and open book with very poorly worded questions.
