Assigns a lot of his own books.
Teaches from his own experiences. Lecturing style is akin to storytelling, which is interesting yet vague, making it hard to take notes and understand the important themes. Assigns a lot of his own books. Marks based heavily on a couple tests and the final paper. Nature of the course diminished my interest in the subject.
awful!!! subject is crazy interesting but take it with someone else
DON'T TAKE HIS COURSE!
The grading scheme was not great (10% for a bibliography), the lectures were all anecdotes and no theory (very unhelpful for an introductory course), and there were some incidences of political incorrectness that were pretty unexpected. This was literally his first time ever teaching and they had given him carte blanche; hopefully it will improve.
Avoid at all costs.
Anecdotal lectures that ended up being more counter-productive than anything else. Told class to 'write about what they want' and then had TAs assign seemingly arbitrary ratings based on personal interpretations. Readings were not helpful and the only way to prepare for a test was to memorize lecture notes. Would not retake.
Davis' lecture are meant to be inspiring to students to develop interest in the beauty of Anthropology. The course is concept based rather than theory. If you show up and keep your ears open, you will do fine. Exams are based on lecture notes. The tutorials should have been used for more rigorous concept clarification rather than group discussion.f
Professor Davis made an effort to provide an environment for our mixed undergradgrad class to reach our fullest potential in writing about Anthropology. He made lots of extra office hours to personally help us with our essays, which I found generous compared to other professors. He made it big in the field, and tried to impart some wisdom for us.
In the beginning he gave lectures that were very broad and difficult to follow. However, he improved near the end by narrowing his focus on specific cultures or aspects of cultures, which made everything clearer. The latter, I expect, will be how he teaches in the future. If you open your mind and understand the material in depth, you will excel.
He has amazing experience with the cultural groups we learned about. The lectures are very difficult to take notes during, but he uploads his notes before the midterm and the final. Although they're his entire script instead of general notes, you don't need any of the books if you study them thoroughly.
His first teaching job - the lectures were lifted from his books (and thus reading assignments) so you don't have to double-up (by both attending lectures AND doing the readings) if you don't want to. Subject material is super interesting and there are lots of films and documentaries related that are helpful.
Wade Davis is a gifted speaker and highly passionate about defending all the cultures of our world. His intro class was extremely inspiring, covering a wide breadth of themes that was a joy to learn about. Do not expect a typical anth course from Davis, he has a clear message to send to students and isn't that concerned with tests or grades.
He has great things to speak about but solely focuses on himself throughout his stories. He gives assignments without any help or clear directives. Overall a man with great stories and great anthropological knowledge, but a very non engaging, ineffective, self-centred way of teaching. Very hard to take notes as he is so broad in his lectures.
Tests are easy, lecture is basically story time. He posts the lecture scripts before the exam which is helpful overall good class.
Lectures are mostly interesting Lectures can be too long and (sometimes) boring Attendance for discussions accounts for 20% of grade To ace the MT & exam: You don't need to go to lectures You don't need to touch, or even smell, any of the required books All you need to do is read the script of his lectures that he uploads online
Wade Davis is an extremely inspirational man, and as his student, I looked forward to hearing about his personal experiences with cultures around the world, each with a moral and a lesson. By the end of the course, however,as he'll explain, there are a few big ones which tie each story together. Take this class. Be inspired. You will not regret it!
Wade Davis is a fascinating professor; all of his lectures combine cultural facts with unique stories from his various travels and projects. While there is little motivation to attend class (no i-clicker, no participation, no need for note-taking as he posts his lectures online), they are always worth going to simply for the interesting topics.
Wade is a crazy, inspirational man that will challenge your views on the world. His lectures are a mixture of his past experiences with other cultural info. He speaks in prose, which can be hard to take notes on. Class orientation might seem confusing at first, but nobody knows what's going on. The TAs were just as confused, but helped out a bunch
Truly amazing man. I feel lucky to have had the pleasure of being in his class.
Wade Davis is one of the most inspirational people I've had the pleasure to encounter. If you're just looking for an easy grade, you can definitely get that with his class, but you will get so much out of this class by attending lectures. He's like the wise uncle you wish you had and truly cares about his subjects and his students.
AMAZING PROF. Half the lecture hall went down to personally thank him after the last class. Some people went to get his books signed by him. I didn't even know what anthro was and it was by far my favourite class because of him. Would take him if you can.
BEST PROF EVER. Super inspirational and he tries with every lecture to truly send out a message to his students. Midterm/final were very fair and the paper was fun to write. Probably the most qualified professor at UBC, wade was so inspirational and knowledgeable. I would recommend this course to anyone as it is truly eye opening and insightful.
I only used my texts to search for definitions of anthropological terms. He posts the readings on connect as well as the lectures. Readings are heaving, but if you keep up with them, attend the lectures and tutorials, you won't have to cram for exams as they are easy. He had open office hours the week before our exam. Amazing and inspirational!
Wade is a professional speaker with a wealth of ethnographic experience to draw from, and the quality of his lectures is akin to attending TED Talks. Needless to say, he's an inspirational guy. Don't bother cracking open any textbooks - just read his book (The Wayfinders) and the lecture notes (posted online). Exams are stupid easy.
Wade Davis clearly teaches at UBC for its research opportunities. This class is mostly made up of him telling stories of endeavors into isolated tribes. Lectures are eventually posted online- read them and you'll do fine on the final. The term paper is very open, so chose your topic wisely and you are set. All in all, class is kinda boring.
One of the most amazing professors I've ever had he teaches from a perspective derived from all his work in the field of anthropology and ethnobotany. His stories are incredible and just all around one of the coolest humans on the planet. It's not really necessary to go to class but its worth it. The midterm, final and paper were all pretty easy.
Incredible prof, the lectures were always very interesting! Great story teller- he clearly has a lot of experience. The marking is very fair, if not easy, and also there are a lot of assigned readings but you don't need them to do well, they're supplementary. Lectures are most important, and they're posted in time for the midterm and exams
Lectures are basically storytime. If you read his book you don't have to attend the classes. He posts his lecture notes online before exams, and that's all i studied from (i never attended class or read the book) and I got an A.
Wade was by far the best professor I had in my first year at UBC. He's incredibly smart, interesting, and literally changed the way I looked at the world. I highly recommend everyone take this class - I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to be taught by Wade. Attend lectures, discussions, and take notes in class and you will do well!
Interesting class with only a few assignments.
One of the best professors I've ever had at UBC! His lectures are a story about all his adventures around these amazing places, he's apart of Nat geo which makes it even cooler. I would definitely take a class with him again, my TA was Chris Smith and he was awesome! This whole entire class is just super easy and interesting i loved it!
Attendance isn't mandatory but it's worth showing up. His lectures are just nice to listen to and really inspirational. Each lecture is a story about places he's been and things he's done and each class I was left with wanderlust. The lectures were a bit scattered but tutorials cleared it up and tests were common sense.
I LOVE WADE DAVIS his lectures are all about his first hand experience with cultures around the world and he's so engaging and interesting. 10/10 would take this course again and would take another course with him if I could. Midterm and Final were both straight forward and the one essay was not bad either.
Davis will put you to sleep. He's very passionate about anthropology, but he's so monotone. Also almost all the readings are his own books and I looked into some of his research, specifically the one about Haitian zombies, and his work is widely refuted on this topic yet he continues to teach it.. either way it's an easy grade. Just really a bore.
If you are interested in Anthropology, take ANTH 100 with Wade Davis. A lot of people don't like this course, but I was interested in the materiel and found him very inspiring. Best course of the year. If you show up, do the readings, and go to the tutorials you will get a good mark. Only textbook really used was Wayfinders.
Wade is the most inspiring professors I have ever studied under! His lectures are simply him telling you of his time immersed within certain cultures as if he's telling a story. If you approach Wade outside of class he is always eager to converse, as his focus is always on the undergraduate student. I cannot say enough good things about Wade!
He's such an inspirational person. His lectures did tend to get boring from time to time, but overall were pretty interesting. You can tell he actually cares about his students and he's passionate about the work he does. His midterm wasn't bad at all and his final paper was very interesting to write. I enjoyed his class very much!
Wade is very inspiring. He tells wonderful stories about cultures from all over the world and he makes you look at the human experience in a different way. His class is also very easy to do well in if you attend the lectures, which I highly recommend you do, because they are fantastic.
Easy essay and easy midterm. Wasn't able to show up to class many times due to volunteering but wasn't too hard to catch up and going to class is 100% non mandatory. Very sweet, kind and intelligent professor! Wasn't my favourite course he was kind of boring to listen to, but if you have any interest in anthro (I didn't) you'll LOVE his lectures
The hype is real people. Wade is by far one of the best speakers I have ever encountered. He has traveled the globe like no one else and is willing to share his voyages with you. You have don't have to take any notes, the exams are extremely easy, and it's a class that massively changes people's world views. I could not recommen this class enough.
Lectures may seem super info heavy, but this course is mostly knowing the main ideas. Prof is great; his travels and stories are interesting and the way that he structures his lectures definitely makes it easy to get a 90+. didn't read his book or do any readings. just read the lectures after they were posted online and got an A.
What a wise man. Anthropology with Wade Davis is inspirational and can really give you a new outlook on life. This class isn't for everyone, but I found the lectures really interesting, and while you don't have to show up to class to do well I always went anyway. You don't need to do any of the readings either. Overall an easy yet engaging class.
I'm a premed student taking this class just as a GPA booster. Well, wasn't I in for a big (pleasant) surprise! Dr Davis completely changed my worldview despite I already know lot in the subject matter. Dr Davis definitely made me a better doctor of tomorrow. Thank you again, Professor Davis! (btw it is a gpa booster as they say ;)
he is the best
I was dreading this class at the beginning of the term because of how boring it sounded but words cannot describe how pleasantly surprised Dr. Davis has left me. I've gained more knowledge about the world and compassion than I've ever been exposed to in my life. You feel like you're listening to a movie and he's so wise and understanding. 10/10
By far my favorite prof in first year. Hes really passionate about anthro. Each lectures focuses on a specific group of people across the world and in a way he brought us along in that journey through his stories. The pictures he presented in class resonated with meaning. You can skip class but dont skip the last lecture because its so inspiring
Getting to know Wade for a semester is probably the best thing that's happened to me so far at UBC. The course taught me empathy like no one else can, and it's also enriched my knowledge greatly. Go to lectures, have a good time, and enjoy the gem that Wade Davis is. Anthro with him is something you're not gonna want to miss.
Wade Davis is an incredibly well qualified and interesting professor. His lectures are totally engaging and left me with new insight and points of discussion every class. For someone who isn't in arts and never considered pursuing more anthropology classes, he has done an excellent job of creating interest in the discipline.
Wade is the most interesting lecturers I've had so far. His stories are incredible to listen to; so encapsulating. While at times the course felt very content-heavy (because of how much information the lectures covered); the exams were fair and I always received good marks even though I was nervous.
such an amazing prof. in the beginning i thought the lectures were sort of boring and monotonous but if you actually listen to him they are so interesting. some of the topics covered in this class actually changed the way I look at life. one of the best courses I've taken so far
Boring. That is all I can say. I would fall asleep in this man's class. Part of why I decided to take his class is because I saw all these amazing reviews on him but holy were they wrong. He is really MONOTONE!!
Took it online, lectures are asynchronous and recorded only. Suuuper long but 2x or 1.5x speed made it bearable, they're really interesting but so much info per. Didn't do any readings, studied off of study guides and summaries given to us in tutorial. Joined one of the prof's office hours + a live stream on reddit LOL he's a really cool guy.
Amazing speaker, amazing story teller. Took this class as a blow off arts elective but ended up being one of the most impactful classes I have ever taken not so much academically but personally. Plus the class (Anth 100) is pretty easy. Love the guy.
I'm guessing his in-person class was a lot easier. I took this class as an elective/GPA-booster so it's quite disappointing that this class is my lowest grade. For online uni, he posts pre-recorded lectures, not giving any chance for interaction. He also doesn't follow a textbook which makes it extremely difficult to gather information.
Incredible prof and amazing lectures. Was really accommodating to international students during COVID (timezone stuff) which was great to see. Was a little off-put at first by how all his lectures were scripted but the guy *knows his stuff* if you get the chance to speak to him. Great course with a pretty laid back format for online classes.
It could be that this class was simply not for me, but I truly did not like it. The readings were super long, I was always unclear what I should take notes on, and Wade is honestly a really monotone guy. I was always bored and never entertained. However, the midterm and final were not too difficult and the paper was a major GPA booster.
unfortunately online lectures meant we weren't sent lecture notes, all lectures were pre-recorded which probably made it less engaging , tests were mostly MCQs which was hard for me because sometimes I'd miss a point he said in lecture
Definitely take this course from him, his experiences all around the world are inspirational and the course will definitely change your perspective. Although requires lots of reading weekly he is an amazing lecturer and speaker.
ANTH100 online wasn't great, what was supposed to be a GPA booster ended up being my lowest grade. Lectures were pre-recorded so there was no engagement with the prof. We were graded only on a midterm, a term paper and a final. I feel like I would've LOVED this class in-person but online it was unenjoyable and difficult.
Amazing prof! If you get the chance to take a class with prof Davis, I highly recommend. Unfortunately, I only got to experience his awe through an online environment, which isn't the same, but regardless, he is so inspirational. Highly recommend attending office hours, if you are online, because all lectures are asynchronous.
The guy is practically an academic celebrity. His class is inspiring if you look at it through the right lens and has changed the way I see things. His lectures can be low energy but are always fascinating. I'd suggest studying the study guide a fair bit and go over tutorial power points. Taking notes should secure an A+ but you can do without it.
Best course I've taken till date. Professor Davis is an amazing lecturer and changes your worldview completely. He's also practically a celebrity. Easy to get a good grade if you participate in tutorials and just read through the material. No memorization needed. One midterm, one final, and one term paper. Lots of readings though.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Most uncaring professor, didn't even have any live classes to talk to him 1v1; he is boring, clearly egotisical, shame because he obviously puts off first years on anthropology! yes, he is famously known, but a boring professor. just wants to sell his 'book' for the money. the TA was my teacher, not him. Lectures 2 hours long
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES. I took his class when it was in person and Wade Davis might look inspirational and shiny, but his "textbook" was just his own book, which he read word for word off of as the lecture. He is rather disliked and discredited by the Anthropology community in academia and often lectures outdated and incorrect information
I don't know what everyone else is talking about when they say he is monotone. Just listen to what he's saying - his stories are super interesting. Although there are no slides which makes it hard to know which info is important, the TA will tell you basically exactly what is on the exam. Just choose D) all of the above and you'll get an A.
Wade is an engaging speaker, but that's as far as my praise goes. His lectures are presented in prose, not as a lecture, which mean it's nearly impossible to take notes. On top of it all, he doesn't have any lecture slides nor does he point out what's actually important to remember, so good luck trying to decipher what you actually need to know
First half of semester was fine, lectures were alright and the midterm was easy if youd gone to/watched lectures and attended discussion. But theres no trigger warnings for a lot of lectures discussing violence (I had to leave one, it got really bad) and some of his research/theories arent credible and have been disproven.
This class is a joke. Lectures are basically an expensive audiobook. Too many of our readings are from his book, which aren't even academic let alone peer-reviewed. He has never answered an email I've sent, everything is done by his TA's. I didn't even know it was possible for TA's to make accommodations before this class.
I absolutely loved the content of the class but god was it difficult to study for, i found it to be very unclear in terms of what to study for. But again, the content was amazing. I'd probably take one of his classes just because of the inspirational content, despite the horrible studying structure.
Don't take this course, especially if you are in first year. It's impossible to write notes for this class and the midterms are very difficult with the limited time. The lectures are also not exactly engaging, I found myself falling asleep many times. The worst part though is the insane amount of readings in which most are just not useful at all.
Lecture's consist of Dr. Davis telling us remarkable stories from his life and his experiences with Anthropology. Very thought provoking and inspiring. Best class I have taken in my 4 years at UBC
Pros: Hilarious lectures, every lecture is like a TED talk, really inspirational, exposes you to perspectives you never had before - I am a different person because I took this class. Cons: You might end up knowing more than the TAs because the course is based on Dr. Davis' personal experiences. No Piazza for ANTH100A - its hard to ask questions.
Engaging, passionate, and inspiring lecturer. Clear expectations, wants you to succeed. Is more concerned with you discussing big ideas than memorizing facts. Doing the assigned readings before the lecture is essential; lectures will solidify a lot of the information and bring it to life. A lot of content, but core themes tie it all together.
The quality of your TA determines your mark. Lecture attendance is not needed, just study off the guide that is provided to you by the TA.
I found his lectures to be hit or miss. Some were very engaging and fun while I found myself falling asleep in others. It can be difficult to take notes since his lectures are just long stories. I would have failed without my TA since she was the one who went over the content and criteria of exams and the term paper.
I found most of his lectures to be very engaging and he is definitely inspirational. The stories he says helps you remember the different cultures and concepts tested. Ensure you prep for the big themes for exams. In lectures, I noticed that sometimes he said the reading word for word, so I found that doing the pre-readings were not that helpful.
There are pros and cons to Prof Wade, he is a great person and if you want to ask him a question after class about the material he is more than happy to just talk to you! His lectures are very interesting however really boring at the same time. The readings are SO important as he wants you to just know general themes rather than detailed facts.
seems amazing and respected in his field, he has done like a whole series with national geographic. However it is IMPOSSIBLE to take notes during his lectures, he just talks on and on with only a slideshow of pictures on the screen. Tests are easy, mostly MC. I pretty much learned from my TA. Also, his book is pretty much his lectures word for word
This class was taught really well. Easy to learn content and engaging lectures. The readings are pretty much optional but were helpful for extra context. The exams were a bit difficult, but nothing crazy.
I learned a lot and was inspired to continue research on other subjects. Be warned though; this class is more about Wade Davis' personal experiences and career, than actual anthropology. There were heavy readings for a first year class and a lot of it is not testable. Your experience really depends on your quality of TA.
I am currently sitting through one of his lectures as he continues to mumble on and on and on and on about something that happened a gazillion years ago without any basis for his claims. I have consecutively slept through all of his other lectures and am planning to go to sleep right now after I publish this. Thank you.
As other students have already mentioned, his lectures are like narratives, so it's quite difficult to take notes. This is a course where you NEED to attend tutorials, or else you'll be lost on the midterm/final. My TA was very competent and the coursework was quite light (midterm + paper + exam), so overall I really enjoyed this course!
He was simply amazing!
Great prof with really interesting, TEDTalk style lectures. Hard to take notes in class but he posts recordings afterwards so it is helpful to listen and then take notes later. Worksheets prepare you for exams and the exams are fair. There's a lot of essay writing involved so if you don't like that then don't take this class.
As many others have said, his lectures were very monotone and hard to follow along. This made note taking difficult however each of his lectures are read word for word from his readings. Participation in your tutorial is mandatory, the TAs are extremely helpful. Overall not a difficult class but there are a lot of readings so be prepared.
Wade Davis is an icon living. His class reignited my passion for learning and love for knowledge. I cried when the semester ended, the exams were enjoyable to write due to how much you remember. His lectures are all based on lived experience and research, which adds a level of humanity often lacking in courses. Too bad his tenures up
Amazing prof, super unique way of teaching which I really enjoyed. Lectures are enjoyable as long as your interested in the content.
He is an amazing professor who truly believes in what he is teaching and he is very passionate about it. He is a wise man who has travelled the world and learnt about different cultures and is teaching people to respect all cultures.
The lectures are absolutely fascinating and delivered TED-talk style so don't try to take notes. The content is some of the most engaging material you'll ever learn. Wade is so cool.
Wade Davis is a spectacular professor. His lecture style is much like a TedTalk and he uses stories from his vast amount of field work to illustrate concepts in anthropology. Dr. Davis' lectures were also inspiring, I teared up and felt very inspired by the end of the course. Heavy reading for a first year course but worth it.
Loved listening to him talk about his passion for anthropology. Just an amazing class all around.
