Frustrating class. Never gave homeworks back on time, never gave a format of his exams, and never followed his own syllabus. In class he would write proofs on board assuming everyone was on the same page as him and understood all his shortcuts. Would go off on tangents with no relation to the class material. Impossible to judge your own grade.
I am a junior/Carlip is easily by far worst professor i have ever had hands down/class is more about proofs and theory than about computation, and exams are ridiculous as is grading/no partial credit or ECF/You will be forced to teach yourself and he finds it fun not to tell what the exam or quizzes will be like/the only way is his way/AVOID!!!!!!
He is terrible at handing back HW, which is really bad for this class since you can redo HW. He grades hard on homework, but it helps you for the tests. He always curves so an A is not too hard to get in this class.
He can be really weird with attendance. He makes everyone fill out little index cards so he can learn everyone's name. He does not like when people ask stupid questions in his class and will usually not answer them because he wants to finish his lecture. He is a really nice guy, and as long as he likes you you'll do well.
His class is very boring! Tests are much harder than what was discussed in class. Very stingy with grades, takes points off for every little thing. If you have a good TA and can teach yourself you should be okay. If you're not good at math don't take!
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Does not engage the class at all. If you want to learn anything, you have to buy the textbook. To say he took off for every little thing is an understatement. I cannot believe Binghamton has him teaching any class. Really awful at communicating material and incapable of teaching a worthwhile class.DONT!
This class is terrible. Tests are way harder than you would think and you're pretty much on your own for learning the material. Avoid unless you have prior knowledge of stats.
SEND HIM BACK TO FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL!!! WE DONT WANT YOU IN BINGHAMTON!!!! PLEASE LEAVE IM BEGGING YOU!!!
Terrible teacher. SO boring and hard to concentrate. He moves on quickly and all his lectures are extremely bland. If you have to take this class the textbook is your bible, everything comes directly from it. Make sure you do good on discussion quizzes. Follow the syllabus schedule and don't fall behind you'll die
The worst professor I have ever had.
He is the worst professor I've ever had. Out of our 350 person class, only about 75 students attended class every day. His lectures are reading off the slide. He doesn't teach you. Not engaging. Go to your TA or tutor to actually learn. If you're a nursing student, takes psych stats instead.
The absolute worst class ever!!! Avoid! A joke! this is a university and the class is not at that level. Hard! Very Hard!
He is the worst professor you can ever have , he gives no help whatso ever its pretty pointless going to class because he reads straight from the book and post his lectures online. the only way to do good in this class is to have a good Ta and get a tutor
HE IS VERY SMART AND HE IS A VERY NICE PROFESSOR!! ACTUALLY, HE IS MY BEST PROFESSOR AT BINGHAMTON! Work hard and visit his office hour! He is very friendly, so he will become your best professor soon!
Best professor I've ever had in all of my years of college. A very fun, laid-back, chill, funny guy. The guy truly cares about his students and makes it a point to get to know each and every one of them and will be there for you after you graduate. Other professors should pay attention to this class and see how students really learn.
Assigns lots of homework, says he'll grade them but takes forever to hand back. Tests are fair. Attend class, and you will do well. He is strict and very specific about how to write proofs. He really does teach you how to right a clear and logical proof, which is the whole point of the class. Will require work. Let's you redo proofs if you mess up.
He is a very nice, funny guy. He is very intelligent and at first his lectures come off as way over your head; however, he makes an effort to get to know each student and is genuinely concerned that everyone understands the material. The tests are hard but he makes sure to go over questions.
If I hadn't taken calc in high school, I never would've passed his class. He turns his back to the class for most of the period and solves problems on his own - not interactive which is vital in a math class. Try to get a different professor if you need this class!!
The only way to do well in this class is to read the textbook yourself and take notes on it. Also do the optional homework's and you will for sure get above a B+ in this class. The class is difficult but if you put in the effort to read the textbook and do the optional homework's you will get a good grade.
Prof. Carlip is a great professor and truly cares about his students. But he is all about theorems and explaining why your work is true. For example, if you simplify a function you are taking the limit of you have to write "local limit theorem" next to your work. Overall, he is always willing to help you if you ask and is quite funny.
It seems like he does everything in his effort to make it so you can't improve your grade. No interest in the class because he is not a good professor at all.
Do NOT take this class if you do not already have stats knowledge. I have never tried so hard and failed so bad. He reads right off his slides and will not let you print them out for your own use. Out of the 500 kids in lecture only 50 go. The tests are too long with only 40 minutes to take.I am now retaking the class at home during the winter
Definitely the worst professor I have had at Bing. Incredibly pretentious for how little he seems to know. Is especially strict with how he gives points i.e. you need to clearly show every step and justify your answer in words. Would not recommend to any future student.
I personally did well in this class; however, I thought it was supposed to be an easy A class. It was definitely not. The exams are very difficult. You must read the textbook and MUST do practice problems. This is not optional. Class attendance is unnecessary, just go to discussions because of quizzes. And make sure your TA isn't foreign.
A nice professor. He writes the process clearly. I really recommend you to take his class.
Tests are difficult, especially without a strong math background. Definitely not given enough time in class for how long the tests are. Must read the textbook and go to discussion. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory. Quizzes were relatively easy.
Teaches like you're in highschool, tests like you're a phD student. Expect to read the textbook & do problem examples in order to pass. Not nearly enough time for exams & exams are extremely difficult. Don't expect help from him or any of the TA's either. Quizzes are easy & mislead you on how tests will look.
Math 147 class is not too bad. If you do the hws, you shoudl be fine. But this professor Carlip is definitely one of the worst I ever have. He is unhelpful and rudely sarcastic in emails. He doesn't teach and just word by word on lecture slide. Horrible professor.
Reads completely off the slides during all of lecture and the slides are taken straight from the textbook. The 400+ person class dwindled to about 25 people in attendance by the third week.
Water Carlip was honestly the worst mathematics teacher I have ever experienced. I have actually taken AP calc before and I got an A in the class. I understand that calc is not taught well in college but I did take the effort to go to his office hours. Every time I went I came out more confused. He grades also grades much harder than other teachers
If you take MATH 147 with Professor Carlip get ready to teach yourself the entire course. His lectures consist of him reading off slides taken from the book. My advice: read the textbook/attempt problems from the book, attend tutoring offered by the university, utilize TA office hours, and find copies of old exams to practice before the exams.
If you can avoid taking this class, avoid it. If you can't, get ready to teach yourself the entire course. The course material isn't too challenging but you will have to spend time each day reading the textbook and doing practice problems to do well. Carlip reads off of slides with extensive text on them all class and isn't receptacle to questions.
Best professor at Bing. He cares about his students a lot. Be sure to go to his office hour and let him know you! Very nice and approachable person! Love him!
Very idiosyncratic, be careful what you say in this class. Very prone to tangents and often makes students feel stupid in class. Do not recommend, don't bother if this class isn't part of your major.
This class is VERY hard, but I did learn a lot. There are so many definitions and theorems you need to know. Lectures strictly follow the textbook. The homework is brutal and takes forever. Tests are basically definitions and 3 proofs similar to what was done in class. My only complaint is that he could be condescending, but still a solid choice.
This class was perhaps the worst class I have taken during my time in Binghamton. I came into this class with an interest in statistics and somehow this man had ripped all interest from me. The only thing I learned in this class is that there are brilliant professors that bring out your curiosity in a subject and there are others that ruin it.
Professor Carlip has to be the worst lecturer I ever encounter, this is no hyperbole. His condescending manner does not help either. Gives way too much homework, but only gives about 20% of the total homework assigned back. I highly discourage anyone to take him.
He is a horrible teacher and so rude. He does not know what he is talking about. I read something in the textbook that was correct and he tried to prove it wrong incorrectly. He would not admit that he is wrong. He looks to give students bad grades. Avoid taking classes with him.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. This class gives me so much anxiety and stress. Rarely hands back homework's and it's almost impossible to gauge your grade in the class. Don't take this class within because he is very unapproachable and makes you feel stupid.
Yes professor Carlip may have a bad sense of humor and that's what might cause you think he's condescending! BUT!! That's definitely NOT what he really means. In a tough math class of course you need to put in effort! Personally, he's super caring and reminds me of my grandfather. Treat this class with respect and effort.
Horrible Professor. No point in attending lecture. Your best bet is studying on your own and going to a tutor.
I loved Professor Carlip's class. He cared about students, was great at teaching, and was quite funny. He's a tough grader because wants you to master the material. His comments on HW were very helpful. His class won't be easy, but I strongly recommend taking a class with him if you want a good professor and want to actually learn something.
I was enrolled in this class for less than a week. I went to class and walked out with great confusion and anxiety. All he did in his lectures was explain the "math behind the math". It is useful if you're a math major, but it is pointless otherwise. Not to mention he feels the need to make you feel like an idiot whenever you ask a question.
I hated that class so much. All he did was basically read the textbook, which was extremely complicated. He even told us not to use any other books to help us understand the material, which I understand for homework, but thats ridiculous for concepts. The homework problems took over 20 hours a week, and he only handed back half of them
I've never had a professor who irritates me as much as this man. Worst professor I've ever had. Don't do it.
Dont even bother going to lecture he honestly doesnt teach you anything. His lectures are extremely convoluted and he doesnt clarify anything. Stayed home and taught myself all the material and I did better than when I went to class.
MATH 226/227 are half-semester classes. I had Prof. Carlip for 226 and switched out into a different class for 227 because I didn't care for him or his teaching style. He makes you feel bad about yourself when you ask questions. He teaches methods different than the textbook which can be confusing. I got a B- in his class and an A- after switching.
What he teaches is like half why the math you're doing exists and the other half is what you actually need to know but he makes it very unclear as to what is what. He has a bunch of short sayings or words he uses way too much and it gets annoying very quickly. He also showed up 10-15mins late basically every day.
By far the worst professor I EVER had in college. His lectures are absolutely pointless, he goes over how he WOULD do the problem, but doesn't actually do it. The exams are ridiculously long and the MC questions have like 11 answer choices. He refuses to answer questions without being condescending and just reads off his copyrighted slides. AVOID!
This guy has Phd from Chicago University and is simply brilliant. The coursework will require time investment but he will provide in-depth explanation if you visit his office hours. He even provided extra office hours for students that couldn't attend the designated hours. He's a real gem that you don't want to miss if you are serious to learn.
I taking this professor for Elementary Stats (Math 147) he goes through the material pretty fast. Even though HW isn't collected I suggest to still do it to understand the concepts. There are alot of quizzes but it helps to balance out the grade. Don't wait for the last minute to study. I'm half way finished with the course but this class is curved
The material in this class is not too challenging, just make sure to read the textbook and do the homework. He reads directly from the slides during lecture, almost word for word, but he posts them on the class website afterwards. I find him to be very condescending, so just don't be caught on your phone and you should be alright.
There are too much quizzes and midterms. Give students very low scores in midterms and final.
Carlip seems like he genuinely cares about his students, but I don't think he understands that his teaching style is very unhelpful for lower level courses/non math majors.
Going to lecture is pointless. Tests are ridiculously hard and long. Doesnt let you use scientific calculator. Either get a good TA, or go to tutoring because this class is awful. Bases tests curve on OTHER STATS CLASSES which makes no sense to me. If you have the chance take this credit elsewhere and transfer the credits to Bing! AVOID MATH 147
Professor Carlip is horrible at explaining anything and prefers not to answer students' questions in lecture. Material on tests is much more difficult than lecture, homework, and discussion section quizzes.
Coming from math 227 last semester I thought 147 would be easy. Prof reads from the book during lectures and writes nothing on the board. With a class of 450, probably 30 kids show up to lecture and he refuses to take questions. The discussion quizzes and homework are manageable, but exams are awful. I would not recommend if you don't need..
This is the worst professor i have ever had. His tests make no sense and when you go to his office hours he is not looking to help you. Some of the things he says makes me wonder how he graduated college and got a job. I am surprised that he is not been fired or arrested yet. I have spoken to the other kids in my class and they all feel the same.
His tests are in the evening( not during regular class time). I had a conflict with one of the exams and he didn't schedule a makeup exam for me until the day before even though I gave him a two weeks notice in person and through email several times.
I had Carlip for Calc 2 and he is very lecture heavy. He will go over an idea or a theorem and go through the proof and how it related to ideas in calc 1. Then he would go through examples he would think it is good to know and practice for the exam. The class is pretty hard, but if you are motivated to do well he is willing to help.
carlip is by far the most useless professor i have ever had, he is older than most dinosaurs and it is crazy how he is still alive. class is not mandatory but the TA sessions are a MUST, as there are always pop quizzes
Carlip in a nutshell: pushed a midterm 2 weeks, didn't give tests back unless approached in office hours, he showed up 45 min late and didn't apologize or even acknowledge his tardiness, screamed "get in alphabetical order!", yelled at me because he assumed I wasn't in class and was not in proper alphabetical order. Tests VERY hard- AVOID ALL COSTS
Professor Carlip bases his lectures on the textbook, literally most of it is directly from the textbook. However, he does explain the examples in depth in lectures. Discussion sessions are mandatory because of the weekly quizzes that are meant to boost your grade. Your grade in this class is based on how well you do on exams, so be sure to study.
bro. his lectures are straight from the textbook. if u can avoid taking stats with him DONT TAKE HIM!!! srsly the worst ever
Didn't like his lecture style, ended up teaching myself from the book as he lectured.
For Calc 2, he was a good teacher. He was lenient w/ grading and curving, explained concepts well, and was very organized. Although the lectures can be dry and attendance is mandatory, I ultimately felt like this was a hard class that was taught well. Also, if you go to his office hours he is very helpful.
Generally awful. Difficult teaching style. Better off learning from textbook/tutor, but answer quiz+test q's in his style since he thinks only he's right. If you go to him for help +really try, he won't necessarily be helpful with understanding the content, but he can be lenient with your grading to help you out. Good intentions, horrible execution
Math147 was by far the worst experience I have ever had while taking a math course. The lectures are pretty much him reading the textbook aloud on powerpoint slides and listening to him complain about students asking questions. 400 person lecture turned into 20 people. If you can, avoid this class or take stats elsewhere. Its really not worth it.
Simply a nightmare. He is extremely rude when asked a question in lecture, and genuinely doesn't care how his students are doing. His lectures and slides do absolutely nothing to help and are so painfully boring there is no point in going. I had to teach myself the entire course, which was so hard. Don't take stats at bing, take it somewhere else.
This is the class that made me want to change my major from Computer Science. Professor Carlip rambles on forever and I can't ever seem to grasp any of the material. This class has literally worsened my mental state, and as someone who struggles with depression, that's really really bad. I'm so glad to never have to take math again.
The only saving grace in this class is the homework done online. If you are doing it a different way than the way he teaches it, expect to get points taken off, if not the whole question wrong. Show up to class, but majority of the time it isn't even helpful because he gets the answers wrong anyway. Better off getting the credits somewhere else
Professor Carlip was without a doubt the worst teacher I have ever had. He comes into class late by about 10 minutes everyday and always runs over because of it. He is a tough grader and if you do not do the exact method he teaches, you receive no credit. When it was mentioned that the homework teaches using an easier method he blew up on the girl.
this class hurt my gpa not because it was hard, but because the professor couldn't teach it. getting a TA would have been so much better than getting him because of how much time I spent on my own teaching myself math because his office hours don't help. if you want to go through hell and back, have fun in this class.
He is great.
He was great.
He was alright.
He was okay.
Carlip was an awesome professor. You really have to be dedicated to the class and work hard. He likes proofs to be done very meticulously and very similar to how he'd do it, which can be annoying but ultimately he's trying to make you a good proof writer. He's really funny if you find logician humor comical. His was my favorite class this semester!
He's the worst. didn't return most of my proofs and is super rude to students.
people dont like him cuz takes attendance & gets mad if u r on ur phone or come late, but its not hard just come on time and stay off ur phone lol. He is a genius, learned calc 2 at age 11, so he he cant dumb down the material well in class. Calc is just hard, go to his office hours if you are confused he is excellent at explaining concepts 1 on 1.
Condescending in lecture and office hours, avoid if you can.
This guy is the worst professor and lecturer I have ever encountered. Sounds like if you had an audio book version of your text book. Teaches DIRECTLY from the text book. Is late to every single lecture. Includes material he teaches on the day of the exam in the exam. Make sure your TA is good and READ THE TEXTBOOK.
Carlip was regularly late to class by 10 - 30 minutes: as result, the class was significantly behind other sections, which led to rushed lessons. Likewise, Carlip adopts a 'proper' notation which is unique to his teaching- it is different than the tests, textbook, and other sections, thus adding difficulty to follow the already obscure lectures.
terrible teacher, i have not learned anything and there's only 3 weeks of the semester left so im definitely going to fail.. TopHat attendance that u need a code for, and it tracks ur location.
He is actually the worst. Tests are impossible and he doesn't care about the student's grades. Take somewhere else if you want to pass.
The tests are incredibly harder than the example questions given during lecture and discussion. If you do not do the daily homework and read you won't get a good grade.
HE IS AWFUL!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE THE PREVIOUS EXAMS! although that may not even help. I took stats because I'm interested in math and statistics seem right up my alley but he did nothing to help that. Pray you get a good TA if you have him, my TA is the only reason im passing rn.
One day when I try to review his class, I unfortunately scattered a handful of rice on my book, and it makes me find out that, even a hen can do a better teaching job than this professor
Absolutely terrible at teaching and incredibly disrespectful to students, TAs, and faculty. Please take at another university or try 148. Tests are extremely difficult and poorly worded because "if you can do the easy stuff, you can do the hard stuff." He regurgitates the textbook, but worse, so try reading and pray. No redeeming qualities at all.
He doesn't teach anything in lecture. The class is not that tough, but he makes it extremely unenjoyable and leaves your grade in your, and your TAs hands. If your Ta that you see once a week can teach you some of the material you can do well. The tests are very difficult, becuase they are nothing like the practice he gives you. Very poor teacher.
If I could give him a zero I would. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR he is literally the worst professor ever. By taking this class my gpa has dropped significantly. I am currently retaking this class elsewhere. The tests are poorly worded and the examples in discussion are no help. So save yourself the stress and worry and take at another school.
Carlip is boring as anything pretty much reads the textbook in class and never puts pen to paper for doing out equations. The test grades for the class were in the 40s and 50s and he curves. You need to read the textbook cover to cover and do every single problem it has because the questions are right from the book. Hes annoying and so is his class
Prof Carlip is exactly what you don't want in a professor. He showed up late to class almost every day, he refused to answer students' questions, and he copyrights his lectures even though he's basically just reading you the textbook for an hour.
He's just not a nice guy. Very selective in answering emails. I guess this part is sort of hit or miss but my TA was awful. It was practically impossible to really do well or learn a lot. His lectures are literally the textbook with a "walter carlip" watermark on top. Take it over the summer, take another class. Just don't take this.
There are many far worse math professors at Binghamton. He shows up late to class but we still covered everything fine. Explains thing well enough that I rarely had to look stuff up or read the textbook. Not receptive of question that don't make sense so just think before you ask.
Didn't return 2/3 of our proofs. Super condescending. Lectures were good I'd say, but he's not receptive to questions and good luck trying to correct him in class. He made me hate math. He's pretty available outside of class though. I would NEVER take a class with him again. It's not about running a hard class, he makes just makes it hard to learn.
The tests are so dumb and make you overthink, the average was a 40%. The lectures are dry and just reads you the textbook. I went to his office hours but he was condescending and rude. I think he lost one of my tests. Just read the textbook and hope and pray the test doesn't wreck you. GOOD LUCK worst prof ever
This is a unanimous conclusion drawn by me and my classmates: Walter Carlip is THE worst professor on this planet. His lectures are hard to understand and he explains very little of the material. When it comes down to students not understanding, he treats us like we're idiots as if getting it right was just common sense. Watch out for pop quizzes
He kind of gets angry at students over everything. Not to mention he just kinda blames the students for poor performance. My classmates and I ended up having to attend other professors' review sessions before finals because we were behind and he didn't hold any of his own. If you've already taken calc in HS, you're better off rereading those notes.
Carlip was by far the worst professor I've ever had. He is by no means dumb, he is a mathematician but he does not know how to teach. His lectures are all over the place and does not explain things well. Do not even bother asking questions. He teaches things a very specific way and will not take anything but his answers. Do not take his class.
Terrible professor, heckles students. Makes you watch youtube videos to learn the materials and basically only does practice problems in class. I do not recommend taking this class with this professor
Carlip focuses a lot on theory and notation but the department tests aren't nearly as focused on it. Speak up a lot in class and don't be afraid to be wrong. He appreciates that. He's a nice guy, but most Calc 1 students want practice problems, not theorems. Goes overtime in lecture. USE THE DEPARTMENT RESOURCES FOR THE TESTS, NOT LECTURE.
This was the only C- I've ever gotten in my life. Carlip was the worst professor I've ever had. Terrible, boring lectures, nasty, nasty attitude towards students. He doesn't want to be teaching and all the students can tell. He was extremely disrespectful and rude. Do NOT take this class.
Terrible class, terrible teacher. Not sure why he is still teaching. Exams were incredibly difficult and discussion was unable to help bridge the gap. Take this class with anyone else you possibly can, his teaching style is contradictory to nearly every other professor I've had, and not in a good way. Not sure how else to say it, just really bad.
1-2 quizzes a week, but announces them(usually). Terrible at explaining things. Criticizes the textbooks heavily so they are of no help. Has this fascination with the "correct notation" and if it isn't written like that he takes points off. Ultimately, it seems that he does care about the students but rather getting through the material on time.
Honestly gave up and went to a friends section to learn the material, was super particular and inconsitent with the textbook. Avoid
Not great, but it's not as bad as most comments make it seem. He focuses excessively on theory with minimal examples/practice, which just isn't what 226 is about. It's like he's teaching a different class. Bad at answering questions, is usually late and runs class past the end time, but he really cares about his students. Great guy, poor teacher.
Carlip was one of the worst math teachers Ive ever had. He shows up late to his own class, he is demeaning to students when they ask questions (although he wants you to ask questions), and he randomly chooses students to answer his questions and mocks them when they get it wrong. All and all, if any other professor is available, take them instead.
The material that he covers is a very new way of looking at math (proofs, set theory, logic...) to even some math majors and he knows the material extremely well but it seemed like he expected us to be the same. His lectures is where most of the learning comes from (not textbook) so attendance is key Also he only returned like 1/3 of my proofs.
Carlip is a pretty good teacher and he is receptive to questions but can be rude if the answer is kind of obvious. He is a very tough grader and everything must be done perfectly with perfect notation in order to not get marked off. He is very accessible outside of class and knows how to teach the subject well. He is very rude sometimes though.
Professor Carlip was one of the most unkind professors I've ever came across. He has a nasty attitude and if the work for a problem isn't exactly how he would do it, he takes off an insane amount of points. He doesn't care that you know how to do it and can get the correct answer he only cares about "correct notation." Study Professor Leonard on YT
If you have the option of taking literally any other professor do it because he literally ruined my life and made me cry after almost every class. DONT DO IT!!!!
Dr. Carlip is an okay guy but he expects you to care about math like it is your passion in life. He was very rude to students in our class, and would show up 10 minutes late almost every time without fail. Would then make us stay 10 minutes past our class time and when we would try to leave he would yell at us.
If you could leave the class leave right away. If you don't use his notation and do the problems exactly how he taught them you will get points off regardless of getting the right answer. He also shows up late to class almost everyday. Some days he would be almost 15 mins late. Don't take the class if he is your professor.
Don't Take! Throughout the semester he was constantly disrespectful to students. He was late to every single class and made then made everyone stay 10 mins late. He cares more about the notation than the concept, and consistently criticized the calculus director and textbook. He gives quizzes at least once a week and rarely tells you when they are.
Terrible professor -- showed up late to every class and was generally rude. Although the content of the class was pretty easy, and the curve is amazing, I would never take this class with him again.
Kindest soul I've ever met. He's really passionate about statistics and his students. He absolutely loves everyone and even brings them gifts and cookies towards the end. I once cried in his office hours, and he looked me in the eyes, and he started whispering statistics equations to help calm me down. I just wished that I actually passed his class
Teaching is very quick and not very clear. He does not convey material clearly at all and is rude if you ask questions during class. He will get off-topic during office hours and will continually cut you off as you try to speak.
please do not take anything with this guys name on it. In my 20 years of existence he may be the worst professor/teacher i have ever encountered.
Our class as a whole loved to have bonding sessions during the 20 minutes at the beginning of class before he showed up. He has never not been late. He teaches the material differently than the textbook teaches it and then takes off points if you do it the way the rest of the department teaches it. Avoid him if possible.
I actually learned a lot from him. I understand other ppl's frustrations, but i respect his teaching style a lot since he seem like he act cares abt the subject hes teaching. If u spent hs memorizing formulas, u'd have a harder time. but its also not too hard following along in class either. kinda creepy w me (girl) tho so I avoided office hrs...
Walter I hated that final as much as I hated that midterm.
Although he is funny and very accessible to meet with during office hours, do not take this class. I spent 8+ hours a week teaching myself the content. Going to class is pointless, but he makes attendance mandatory and gives unfair pop quizzes. The course itself is terrible and 224 moves to quickly while 225 crawls. Try to take calc not at bing.
Carlip is a very difficult teacher and grades pretty harshly. The homework takes a lot of time, but it's doable. Every week he gives us a pop quiz, which is 20% of your grade. I studied a lot for the midterm and I still failed. I went to his office hours, but it was not much help. However, he cares that his students actually understand.
Overall, Professor Walter is a good man, he is kind and hilarious with his cold jokes at times, When it comes to Math the man is serious man he literally will give the most complicated way of solving each problem focusing on Theorems and writing description for each step which in my opinion is not necessary and practical. But I enjoyed his class GL
he is a nice guy, but expects you to take his course VERY seriously. he complicates things instead of explaining in simple terms. only take him if you have a genuine interest in math, but if you don't, take math in the summer or have a grad student teacher instead. you will have to put a lot of work into his class.
Carlip was open to helping students in office hours. When helping students, he did not explain material well. Rather, he treated the material as if you should already know it. I went to many office hours but did not benefit from it. Additionally, professor Carlip is a very harsh grader. He does not hand out partial credit on quizzes or exams.
Some reviews seem unfair. His lectures are fast-paced, and if you're not passionate for math, some criteria may feel unreasonable. He explains things in a way that can confuse first-time calc students, but if you note where he wants explanations, you'll do fine. He's nice (though a bit awkward) and holds frequent office hours, which helps a lot.
His lectures can be hard to follow, likely because he's a math genius and doesn't realize how confusing it is for those new to calculus. His strict grading and difficult problems prepares you well for the department's midterms/finals. He's socially awkward, which may seem "rude," but he's definitely patient/kind. Definitely go to his office hours!
Took the class back in Spring 2024 for 1 day before dropping. One of the worst professors I have had in my time at Binghamton. Old-school with emphasis on participation, berating students for wrong answers, and overall bad teaching. I personally experienced discrimination in class with a racist remark, stating my parents “made up my name”.
Tough grader. Pop quizzes. Long WebAssign homework.
If you see this man on your registry, drop out for the semester.
do not take... at all
definitely more difficult than other professors, but if you go to office hours and it will help a lot. He cares a lot about his students and making sure they really understand the theories behind each solution. Gives a lot of partial credit, make sure to include statements he expects. He's a funny guy too. Go to office hours and you will be okay.
Makes other bad professors seem like angels.
EVERY SINGLE REVIEW IS RIGHT! I went in thinking, It can't be that bad, but it was worse than I imagined. He nitpicks everything and makes an already difficult class even harder. If you have no background in Calc 2, do yourself a favor and avoid him. His teaching was awful, with extra work to take the exact same exam as other sections. L Notations
He likes math so much that it's scary. I totally understand what he says, but the man just cannot teach to students below genius level.
He is a VERY tough grader and is a stickler for notation/knowing the theorems. Takes off points on quizzes for minor things and this heavily impacts your grade. I would recommend going to office hours, but he acts like you already know it even if you don't. He is nice sometimes but can turn rude very quickly. If you get him, SWITCH.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Just avoid all his classes you will be better off I promise. I could give an hour-long PowerPoint on everything wrong with his class, and it still wouldn't be enough. Super rude and claims everything is high school math.
Old dude is taking his frustrations out on Gen Z kids. It's pathetic. It's not their fault his life outside works sucks.
Never had a professor care so little for the status of their students. He expects everyone to follow what he writes on the board with no explanation.Quizzes and exams are graded harshly. He believes that if you did not write out the correct steps(with word descriptions of what you did)you will not receive full point, even if you got the right answer.
So much to say. Isn't kind at explaining. Spends too much time yapping about his notations, proofs and mathematician terminology. Tells us to read the textbook but critiques it all the time. Doesn't really do exam problems. Class was behind so lectures were rushed. Not nice with grading. Requires work that isn't needed in other sections. DON'T TAKE
Tough grader, tests are hard but that's what math is about. He's incredibly willing to help outside of class. Office hours will run for as long as you need and he's very responsive to his email. Cares deeply about students understanding and is insanely knowledgeable. I would 100% take again. Go to office hours!!! Curves quizzes and tests like CRAZY
He is so smart that he cannot teach mathematics at a simplified level. Pop quizzes every Friday, STRICT grading. If you do not write his exact notation, you will lose points. In class -- grumpy. But in office hours, he is incredibly kind. Take this with a different professor.
If you are a math major he will love you, he wants you to do well! Just go talk to him in office hours if you're confused. He's very willing to give extensions. If you don't do well on quizzes don't worry he curves them HEAVILY at the end. I can understand the hate but he's genuinely brought me to tears with his support! Any math majors trust me!
Do NOT take this class with him. The reviews are right, he makes this class 10x harder than it needs to be by overcomplicating things and being such a stickler for notation. He is not a lenient grader, and comes off as rude in class. Cannot teach math at a simplified level and acts like we ALSO have a PhD in Math. Stay away from him.
A lot of mixed reviews but really won me over by the end of the semester. He's a tough grader and wants very specific notation, but if you're willing to learn his way he's very helpful. Very nice in office hours and always open to extensions if you miss an online assignment. If you're confused, make sure you show up and just go to office hours
He is an easy grader but doesn't know how to teach math. Uses terrible notation and uses ln and log interchangeably. Half of the class has either dropped or withdrawn from the course.
He is a really nice guy, but not a good teacher. Pop quizzes every day, and he is super strict about his notation being used in problems. He is very good with partial credit, but basically half the class dropped because of the midterm. Super sweet guy, but do not take his class unless you want to be completely confused on every single topic.
ngl hes so mean
He actually deserves a 3 or a 4 but I am giving a 5 just because I believe he is a good guy and a lot of what I see here is greatly exaggerated. Lectures could be boring and he doesn't allow devices, but he is very available outside of class and willing to help. He is also strict with notation but when I talked to him about it he had good reasons.
