knows students cheats & chooses to ignore it
he is a great proffessor
old boys network going on here
do the work and don't whine
may help in class but doesnt act like chairperson when you go for help on a matter of CHEATING

not a nice person out of class
very smart guy who has attended way too many PTO board meetings/ice cream sundae nights/ t-ball games for the kids in his day. Like him but you have to keep up with the class otherwise forget it, you will learn a lot from his classes- good teacher overal
hmmm...well, i like him. Very entertaining at times. Will always keep going over things if you don't understand. Reasonably compassionate. Just happened to teach a difficult subject so i didn't excel. NOT overrated.
He is such a nice guy and is willing to help you out in any way. As long as you do the work you will get a good grade!
Does he seriously expect you to stay awake his entire class?
Great at making something easy, very hard. Don't expect any help.
I'd rather die a slow and painful death than be in his class another year...but actually, in a way both are kind of like the same thing.
Not a very easy class. He's not to easy to follow for an hour and a half. And to make matters worse his tests were all easy tests.
unfair and shows favoritism part of the good old boys network disliked his class
I didn't do my work in this class and so did kin of poorly. However he did offer help and he cares about each student.
good guy. cares about his students and will give help and credit to increase grade if you do your work.
found him unfair and playing favorites didn't learn much from him

Class is very boring, yet the workload is easy. He does offer a lot of extra credit. Tests are kinda hard, and its hard to tell what to write down for notes during class. eh, not so great, i wouldnt take him again
He's a good professor if you do your work and participate in class just a little. He wants students to show some kind of effort because he cares about what he's teaching. And he's fair and grades fair. If you do nothing, you'll be graded that way.
ole boys network at work here again :(
same ole same ole
HE is a very interesting person to talk to. he wants you to work for your grade, but wants you to succeed to the best of your abilities. Th Ire Study tour was a way to meet teachers and see them outside the classroom, he genuinly cares about his students.
Good Teacher, just do your work and you WILL be fine. Very good listener and helper.
Prof. Carroll is an awesome teacher. he explains everything, he will explain things to you either on his own time or in class. His test a little hard, but if you read and listen you will fine. He is very helpful. I would take him as a prof. again.
Dr. Carroll is a good teacher. Take all the notes that he gives and read and you will do fine. Also do the practice tests that are on the Stark website and that will help ALOT on the test. I think he is a good teacher to take.
extremely smart and nice professor. he is friendly and makes sure he learns everyones names. he keeps the class interesting by changing the lessons around. you can do well if you study for his test.
Avoid taking him. The work load compared to other teachers is far greater.
I would say one of the niciest professors in the criminal justice department. He learns everyone's name, and shows you the material. You can easily get an A if you study, but come on 10 quiz's no mid term.
TOO HARD AND HE IS BORING AS CAN BE
Hes a really nice professor. He always explains things that youre unclear on & he responds to emails quickly. He does give a heavy workload but as long as you go to class its not that hard. I really liked how he learned everyones name.
Dr. Carroll is a good teacher and if you go to class there is no reason you shouldn't get a high B minimum.
he rushes through powerpoints, doesnt explain anything--even if you ask a question-will tell u to reread the chapter. heavy workload...exams straight from online exams--memorize them!!
Very good Professor rushes through power point presentations but posts them online so you can have access to them. Makes an effoert to keep the lectures intresting. He answears emails quickly and gives lots of extra credits. If you study you'll do fine
SO HE IS DEFINITLY A NICE GUY BUT DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR SOCIAL DATA...HE RUSHES THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK!! YOU BASICALLY DO A CHAPTER PER CLASS...IF YOU ASK A QUESTION HE TELLS YOU TO REREAD THE CHAPTER...THE WORKLOAD IS UNBELIEVABLE ALMOST LIKE YOU DONT HAVE ANY OTHER CLASSES TO TAKE...THE TESTS ARE OKAY, JUST MEMORIZE THE ONLINE STUDY GUIDE QUESTION
All around great guy who is always willing to help a student out. Fair grader too, if you are willing to make the effort you will succeed.
This was a freshmen seminar, I thought it sounded interesting, and it was, but he likes to repeat himself EVERY class, even has the powerpoints repeat slides. The reading and journals are not bad but the essay you have to write is on a page you read in a book... no research. He is nice but confusing and repetivive.
Nice guy. Assigns text book reading daily, but I know most people in the class didn't do it. Online quizzes and assignments are all easy. Most questions on the final came from previous online quizzes. Some of the things discussed were interesting. Overall really easy.
1st year sem Tipping Points. I wasn't totally interested in the class going in, but it ended up being pretty decent. Daily writing journals only need to be a paragraph or so. He really focuses on everyone becoming a better writer and gives individual feedback on writing. Lots of different things in class: group work, power point, videos, etc.
Great teacher. Yes--he does have a somewhat soporific voice after a long day, but he also is very discerning and is fantastic at bringing the course material together to make a powerful point. I have learned a ton in his classes. He has a profound understanding of the subject which he relays with wry humor and rich insights.
One of the best teachers I've had at BSC. He can be repetitive and his power points can be somewhat boring. But very funny guy and knows how to teach. Fair grader, attendance is necessary, and gives extra credit. I'm taking again in the spring.
I thought he was a really good teacher. He gives a syllabus of the whole semester on the first day. There is a lot of reading and use of the book but if you read and participate in discussion you will be fine. I found him to be very helpful and a very nice guy.
alright teacher. Picks favorites. Makes seminar detailed but all the stuff is the same.
he was really fun, and enjoys tacos
nice guy, very intresting stories. lots of reading, but its expected because of the CJ and SOCI topics. grades fair. take him if you can. ive had him twice and gotten a B.
If I could fit it in before I graduate, I would take him again. Dr. Carroll has a wealth of knowlege in his field. He is far better at choosing readable texts than most instructors. I found his urban crime class very enjoyable.
very nice and very helpful. a lot of reading with journal questions but nothing too hard. he's very knowledgeable and you'll learn a lot from him. took him for a seminar and found it very interesting.
He's a nice guy but there is a lot of reading. The Reading Journals are easy and quick but not worth reading those boring books. I had him for my freshman seminar and I will never take him again for anything.
Great Teacher! Very nice guy when you get to know him. Have to do some reading to get by. 3 papers and no tests. I would take him again.
He's a good guy in general but his classes are pretty hard. you have to read soooo much and he has about three different books that you have to have. we only have a final and a midterm for tests and those are extremely hard, but you also have to write a 10 page paper. overall he is a very hard grader and the test are hard but his lectures are good.
The seminar took was about things Americans fear and exploring reasons why Americans hold these fears. We used 3 texts and a writing style manual. I liked the order of the texts but I felt the style manual was forced. Either you adapt your writing or your grade dropped like a rock. Just attend class, ask questions when confused, and you will pass.
He is intimidating but he knows what he's talking about. It's hard to follow him sometimes because he gets so into it, but if you listen you will get a lot out of it. For seminar, we needed 3 books which was OK because they all cost less then $5. He gives extra credit and will answer any/all questions. Doesn't give too much work, I recommend him.
He was a nice professor, but unless you really love and enjoy reading then I would suggest this class. He would give you readings every night for homework. He would go over the readings in the next class and then would move on. His lectures are interesting but I do not like reading so I didnt like the class.
Really good class. You can't be a complete idiot, otherwise you won't do well. Have an opinion and be able to articulate it.
Dr.Carrol,is a very nice Professor. He is very approachable if you need help in the class. Keep up with the readings. HE WILL CALL ON YOU IN CLASS. He does give a 10 page research paper but for the midterm and final I recommed that you use the study guide and you will be fine. More than half of the questions are on the exam. Safe Professor to take!
Dr. Carrol is a very nice professor. He will help you if you need help. Very approachable. I recommed that you do all the quesions on the study guide for the midterm and final. He will use most of the quesions off the study guide. Make sure you read for class he will call on you. He is a safe Professor to take!
The guys brutal! I took a 100 level course just for credit, and he treats it like an upper level. Don't take!
Awful teacher but nice guy. MUST do all reading. He barely teaches in class and makes this information he does give very confusing. VERY difficult to take notes. I had to take this class for a core class and he treats it like a 200 level class. Only two-three tests a semester. Plus side he offers tons of extra credit opportunities.
Disliked him. If you don't do your readings your not going to pass. He doesn't go over the readings at all. He has power points but doesn't use them. I would suggest using the studyspace that goes along with the book. Bad teacher.
He is really not that bad of a professor. These comments are obviously by people who don't go to class or do their work. There are 3 books but I never read any of them. Just use the study space that he tells you about, go to class and study before the tests. It really is that simple. Safe professor to take.
He takes attendance every class! Must show up to get a good grade. There are three books that you must get, and there is homework (reading) every night. Although he is a nice man, you must take notes.
Prof. Carlos' class isn't one you should take if you plan on just sitting through a 100s class. He makes you think, and learn. This class is very engaging and interesting if you take it seriously. Also 2 of the 3 readings are very interesting and easy reads. I'd recommend taking this class if you want to get your money's worth
Never ever take this man for an online class! You actually need to read the text because the tests are timed and when he grades the short answer sections he doesn't explain why he took off points. Your best bet if you're looking for a helpful and easy online class is to stay away from him!
This was an online class and he is brutal. He is a picky grader and not helpful at all. Also took him for another class (in class). Lectures were boring and dragged on. Nice guy, mean professor.
I loved him! If you do not like to read then do not take his course however, you will fail ! All his questions come from the books and from his class discussions. Overall extremely interesting .
If you dont like to read, do not take your FYS with Carroll. The books are boring. He gets really angry when you're late or if you have your cell phone out. He can have a sense of humor but overall would not recommend.
He does not teach anything on the tests. He expects you to read whole entire textbooks and gives essay and short answer questions for the final. Not helpful at all when you have a problem and not clear about what he expects from you either.
Took him for 220 online. It was difficult but I learned a ton! Also had him for a higher level soc class in class. He is a nice guy and is willing to help you, you just need to know the material.
i took three classes with him, you need to do the reading. he will ask the class questions from the reading and if nobody answers he will decide to have a pop quiz on the readng immediatetly. also it would behoove you to show up on time and dont use your phone. and learn how correctly set up an email.
Tons of reading, online quizzes weekly that aren't to hard. He will give pop quizzes if no one is answering his questions in class. Not my favorite professor pretty much because of the over work load
The material for this class is all learned at home by reading the book. You dont learn really anything in class cuz he usually just talks about random stuff the whole time. He gives online quizzes which are easy because you can take them as many times as you want so you can always get an A. But to good in this class you need to read.. A LOT.
This was a difficult class. Exams are mixed. A lot of information to absorb. I felt like I was taking an online course, as quizzes are on a website and watching Youtube videos. I do not recommend this class, unless you are a serious Soci major.
Do not take this professor! He is very condescending to his students and gives a heavy workload. If you ask him questions in class he will tell you read the book. I really don't think that I learned anything from his class. avoid taking him if possible
He may be longwinded but if you focus you can actually understand whats going on. He bases the lectures on reading assignments so this is a big "reading" class. As a professor he is helpful and extremely nice. The books are so bad either.
I loved this class! He is very clear on what he wants and expects from you! very nice guy and is extremely knowledgable on the subject. However, if you don't like to read don't take his class. His lectures are almost always based on the readings! He has weekly online quizzes based on the readings, a midterm and final , and two easy assignments.
He's alright. Make sure you do extra credit and follow his directions. He's pretty clear with what he wants from you. Get a bad grade on weekly online quiz? Take it until you get 100! Definitely read and do the two easy assignments. Certainly not an extremely difficult class but certainly not the easy way out either. It's a college course. Goodluck
Great class, most of the class did amazing on tests, he is respectful to students, very aware of grades and open to helping students during office hours if they need it.
Dr. Carroll makes you work for your grade. There's a lot of reading, and expects you to take notes during class (he will get angry if no one is). Quizzes are online & you can take them over until you get a 100. He is very explicit with his instructions, & he will get mad if you don't follow them. You learn so much from his class, do take it!
He is a very caring professor that will do his best to help you out when he can. I had to take him twice because of an illness I got, and he was so understanding and helpful. His knowledge and the work he gives out is easy to understand but advanced enough to where you really learn something and stay interested.
I had him for an online class , he's a really tough grader. He is also very particular about every aspect of course. He was also very condescending towards students. I would not recommend!!!
Nice guy and comedic but very strict about small things that really shouldn't matter much like how you title your emails. Gives plenty of extra credit options. Teaches to the book. His tests ask material-application questions so it's different than just studying and knowing the answer.
Doesn't care, wants you to fail. Grades you off a few assignments and tests which are very hard. You can be giving your all and still feel like you're failing. Avoid at all cost.
Very blah. Takes the class way to seriously. Doesnt give second chances to improve. If you ask a question because you were absent he tells you to ask a classmate. Will keep you past class time end. Makes you late for next class. Tons of reading. Questions on hw have to be answered to his liking or you fail.
Walter Carroll is very smart in his field, but not a fair or enjoyable professor. I took this class in the afternoon and it was hard to stay awake because he speaks in a monotone voice and goes on random rants. Lots of reading for homework that he expects you to understand. Tough grader and does not give helpful feedback at all. Wouldn't take again
I really enjoyed Professor Carroll's class. The class is a little tough, we had 3 exams in total and to do well, you really have to do the readings and look at ALL of the materials. Sometimes he went off topic and just told stories, but I enjoyed the class.
Professor Carroll is a very sweet and caring man. He can be harsh at times during class, but usually only if you deserve it. I would definitely take him again, he truly cares about student success even if he says he doesn't (which he might).
Good professor, likes to tell stories, dont be on your phone in class and you should survive. He provides all of his materials online making this course ideal for any intro student.
He gives you 3 assignments and 3 tests to do for the semester but they are not really hard. Overall the only difficulty us keeping up with the reading, which as long as you follow the syllabus it isnt hard either.
This class was challenging, but he gave really great and detailed feedback.
Dr. Carroll is an intelligent professor and I learned a lot from his class. He can be condescending at times, though. He's also a tough grader but gives helpful feedback and let us revise our papers. We had 3 short papers, a research paper, a personal essay, and the final. Lots of reading that we discussed in class. Strict attendance policy.
Mean, smart, and very hard grader
Every other weeks he posts a discussion with a few questions. If you so happen to answer the question in a way that he does not agree with, he comments on your work "inadequate answer" with no explanation. He does not give enough feedback and is rude when asking for help or clarification. I do not recommend him based on the way he treats students.
Assigns a lot of readings for each night, but you don't need to actually do the readings in order to participate well as long as you skim the text. No tests or quizzes, just 3 essays and 1 large research paper/project. Other than that participation matters. Expect to always have to revise your essays. Offers extra credit. Takes attendance every day
Very nice man but not a great teacher. He relies heavily on the book to teach you and then reviews briefly in classwhat he expects you to have learned from the readings. In this day and age with so much research showing how people learn so differently you would think this old practice of relying on a book to teach would be out the window.
He gave assigned readings every night and it is very easy to get behind. He ask very specific questions on the tests, so if you do not read you will do poorly. His class is extremely difficult for an intro class and the work load is heavy.
Honestly the worst professor I've had at BSU so far. He doesn't teach anything during the lecture because he expects you to learn everything from the books. He assigns a bunch of papers that always need to be revised because he seems to just make up requirements as he goes along. He is also just outright rude and disrespectful! Avoid his class!!
The only reason this man became a professor was so he could preach his opinions to the world then belittle any of the students that dont agree with him. Any comments given on written assignments are not only condescending and completely rude, they are also extremely unhelpful. I dreaded going to class everyday. Never take him as a professor.
Is very knowledgeable and answers questions well but basically expects you to learn all the material by yourself. Gets off topic a lot in class is overall pretty condesending to students. There is little chance to raise your grade if you do poorly on just one test. I definitely would not take any of his classes again.
Not sure why there's so many negative reviews here. I've taken four classes with Dr. Carroll, and next semester will be my fifth. I've gotten an A in every class I've taken with him. Don't be on your phone in class, do the readings, and participate and you'll be fine. He is really passionate about what he teaches, and he wants you to do well!
worst professor i've ever had here at BSU. he likes things done in a very specific way and can be super rude and condescending in his emails and feedback. we only had 2 tests and 6 assignments to be graded off of for the entire semester. i'm a senior and this is the worst intro and online class i've ever taken. don't recommend.
Taking him for research methods. He nitpicks at the smallest things. Didn't do the subject heading of your emails EXACTLY right? He'll give you hell about it. Didn't answer his question right? He publicly admits to being disappointed you didn't read. He knows the material, but he expects you to know as much as he does while you're LEARNING.
One of the rudest people I have met. He does not care about your learning but more that you agree with his opinions. Midterm, final, and 6 other assignments- not much but he is insanely picky about things that don't matter and has nothing to do with class. Such a condescending professor I would not take him if you want to be treated with respect.
Was a solid class. Very prompt with posting assignments and answering questions. One thing while doing this class through a pandemic he loosened due dates but modifications to assignments might have been more helpful. Was ok.
Very difficult, mean, condescending. Every week he emails us and expresses that he might make the tests harder than they already are. Very strict, not an easy class, he should be your last resort if all SOCI teachers/classes are full
Honestly its only been a couple weeks and Im already dreading this class every week. Hes incredibly smart, offers extra credit, and loves what he does but is very condescending and passive aggressive to students. Im afraid to ask questions at all. I have disability services and I feel afraid to apply them. To heavy for an intro course.
I was accused of cheating by using a quizlet that I had no idea existed. He is very passive aggressive and is extremely petty about things like how your emails are set up. I received a 40 on both assignments, because of my lack of knowledge. I apparently "don't know the material" but I haven't gotten a grade lower than an 85 on any of his tests.
Calls out students during class in a condescending way. If you ask him a question, he will be extremely rude and degrading. One of the toughest graders I have had for an intro class. When I completed his assignments correctly and followed his guidelines, he accused me of using outside sources (when I used the given ones), resulting in two 50's.
I was so hesitant to take him because there were so many bad reviews, but now after taking him Im so happy I did. Yes, his class was challenging, but he actually cares about his students and their success. Read and pay attention and you should be fine. Great respect for Dr. Carroll.
Professor Carroll gives a ton of lengthy readings for homework. Throughout the course you will have to read two books that are of good length. His grades are based off 4 assignments all year which he takes of many points for a decent but not 100% correct answer (usually -10 or -20). He lectures all class long and is rude when asked a question.
There were only 4 assignments throughout his course. After you write an essay, he gives you feedback to 'perfect' your score. He IS specific about how your writing/emails are formatted. But that's as much as what is difficult. HEAVY READING AND DISCUSSION based. Just show up, keep up with the readings, and participate! He makes you work for an A!
Very picky with email formatting and assignments. Will take off -10 for small errors. He is a very smart professor and he certainly knows it. I personally hated asking any kind of questions because of his condescending manner. He does offer a lot of extra credit, so there's that.
He is a very smart teacher who knows a lot. Once in a while, he likes to belittle the students because we are not as smart as him, which we should not be. Many reading assignemnts. Must go to class to understand what is going on.
Would never take this class again. Seriously if I could go back in time I would. Very condescending, and goes on random rants about his life/family life in the middle of class and wastes time usually answering one students question. He is very passionate about his job, a little too passionate
I would NEVER take any of his classes again, hardest Professor ever.
Grading criteria and expectations are unclear and grading is extremely harsh. Every interaction this professor had with students was not constructive or helpful. Passive-aggressive attitude with students. The content was not efficiently delivered or understood by the majority of the class, lecture was off-topic and unclear.
I withdrew from the class because of how awful he is as a professor. He is a disgrace to the sociology department and many people have switched majors because of him. Do not take any class with him unless it is your last option. He told us we would crash and burn if we didnt keep up with the readings. His overall attitude is negative in class.
This man is highly inconsistent in his grading and feedback. He also talks like a politician, so good luck asking him questions becausewow. Most of the answers we did get were oh so condescending and unhelpful. I do not recommend taking this professor if you can avoid it.
Isnt caring whatsoever and insanely difficult on grading. Took off 25 points on an assignment and told me to go and get a tutor after I used the word embezzle incorrectly. Only talks about his life and plays 20-30min vids during class. Also decided on the first day of in-person classes to switch to zoom.
Professor Carroll will like you if you do well. He is condescending in the way he answers questions. He expects everyone to know everything without asking questions. There are several assignments throughout the course relating to the textbooks. He has no tolerance for errors in your writing- even though he makes typos. There is a midterm and final.
I never drop classes but I am more than halfway through the semester and made the decision to drop this class. Prof. Carroll is incredibly rude and does not care about his students success. He only gives a few assignments and is a super tough grader with really harsh feedback. He was never available to help. do not take him
I don't understand why Carroll has such horrible reviews. He does give honest feedback when grading papers that can come off condescending, but he's just super old school. I always select him when the option is available because he's super understanding and only assigns 3 papers and 2 tests all semester. Turn your work in and you'll be fine.
Carroll is a very passionate professor. He loves Sociology and is incredibly intellegent. He is an easy grader and only assings a few papers throughout the semester. Participate and turn in your papers and youll be fine. I will be taking him again
difficult to follow, he is often off topic and frequently talks about his own political views as well as constantly talks about himself. His instructions are often unclear and his assignments are difficult as we never actually learned the information needed to complete them, rather listened to his personal views on trump most classes. He is rude.
Walter cannot teach. He doesn't care about his students, he doesn't teach in class. You teach yourself the whole course and he will get mad at you for not understanding him. He often spoke to us like we were stupid. He goes on tangents and talks poorly about his classes to his other classes. You'll have no clue what he expects of you.
Unpopular opinion, but I kind of loved Dr. Carroll. Maybe it was because it was an online class and not in person, but his expectations are very clear, his assignments are really easy, and he doesn't over-burden you with work. He is a very easy grader as well and seems very knowledgeable and passionate. Lots of extra credit opportunities also.
I took this course thinking it would be an easy A for my second semester of senior year. I was incredibly wrong. He constantly was telling me that it seems like I didn't read the material when I swear on my fricken dog that I was reading the material. His comments were always so rude but had no guidance as to how to make them better. Do. not. take.
This professor was rude and gave confusing assignments. I am normally not the one to leave bad reviews, but this professor made my semester miserable.
Very condescending
This professor is extremely picky about email formatting and and is very rude. Asking a question will result in a very condescending answer, as well as his feedback to assignments. I know he behaves this way towards most students, but it is extremely frustrating. I would not recommend taking his class even if its asynchronous.
After reading a lot of these reviews, I was definitely hesitant to take a course with him. I did take an asynchronous course, so I cannot speak for his in-person lectures but I have nothing but respect for him. He can be tough, but it's because he genuinely wants his students to succeed. He was always so kind and communicative when I reached out.
He may seem he is tough but he is really a good professor. He answers emails when he can, and he give you a bunch of extra credits! If you have really anxiety I suggest not taking his classes because he randomly calls out on people.
He's very picky and strict. Honestly no one should have to take his course . Choose one of the other SOC professors , he knows what he's teaching for sure but it takes more than that to be a good teacher. He's very sassy an overbearing save yourself.
Professor Carroll is so caring and really shows sincere effort in his work towards his students' education. I took an online class with him, and his blackboard was so easily accessible. His responses to emails were so fast and very helpful. He gives a lot of extra credit too! Overall, great professor I totally recommend!
The professor has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, you can do well. Unstuck AI was helpful for study prep - worth checking out alongside the textbook.
He is very strict, and he is a tough grader. He might seem nice, but he is not, and he is very pretentious. He is very rude and sassy. I don't recommend taking his class. He is a very difficult man to deal with. I passed this class because I am a studious and hardworking student, and I was being patient.
