hard, but interesting class
Horrible and obnoxious person. I love art history and he destroys it.
talks too fast, brags too much, and is waaay too full of himself
he is rambling and extremely boring
Gives too many slides to memorize.
Never boring. Teaches more in one class than many learn all through college.
very interesting professor, knows his stuff! Learn more in this class than in many others.
Great lecturer, very passionate about his subjects and highly knowledgable. Hard course, but worth it!
talks too much but at least knows what he is talking about. probably the only class that is going to teach me something
Everyone in college must take a class with this man. He is brilliant! A must, especially this day in age. A truly sincere and passionate mind. You will learn much with this fine professor!
Great teacher. Enormous insight into the material and amusing anecdotes. Class was difficult but very interesting. I never skipped and enjoyed every part of the class. Walter was also very nice and approachable.
if you need help, go to the TA's. entertaining lecturer and his overall knowledge of art is astounding. you have the possiblity of learning so much from him

superb teacher with seemingly neverending knowledge of the subject (expect to take lots of notes). learned more, worked harder, and enjoyed it more than any class ive taken since.
Probably the most intelligent man on the whole campus. Walter is really a throw back to the old fashioned scholar. His classes, however, can be dizzying as he talks fast and in GREAT detail (maybe a little too much).
excellent detailed teacher, yet requires a lot of work.
amazingly intelligent and interesting professor, but rambles on too often and talks too fast
Best teacher on campus. Hard course but easier than many because the material is so interesting. Lectures are the best.
Lectures are SOOOOO incredibly boring. Guy doesn't seem to care about helping students and the material leaves a lot to be desired. Do not take this course unless it is required for you major.
worst course i've taken at college. Worked really hard and I still got a C. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless art history is ur major
Very hard and dense class, but he is very knowledgable. Wouldn't recommend as a gen ed, too hard for that.
Enthusiastic professor who is passioniate about his field of study and cares for his students.
very lively and interesting professor; makes art history more than intriguing; definitely would recommend
Is willing to work w/students who are struggling in the course ( I know from personal experience). Adds humor to what would otherwise be boring as all hell. Appears very unapproachable at first but is an EXCELLENT mentor/professor/person...my best yet!
hmm, lots of mixed opinions. YES the class is hard. But, he is a very interesting and smart guy, lectures are usually interesting. Gives VERY DETAILED instructions for papers, so it's hard to screw up. go to class, spend 1 to 2 hrs/wk reading the text
Although many students complain that Professor Denny carries on in class and that he expects too much from students, I think he is just super. His lectures are always exciting and he is very knowledgeable and helpful! I want to be just like him when I grow up.
Let's get one thing straight, kids-- Walter Denny knows his stuff. And UMass students are lucky to have him. I took the second half of his Islamic Art History class; it was definately not easy, but the Prof was totally accessible and helpful. He is completely passionate about his field of study and that resonates through the course.

Horrible Class. This teacher has been doing this same routine for 30 years? As a Gen Ed. This is a joke. I'm not an Art History major. I'm not going to pay to see works of art for this chump. Horrible class. Very boring. And when he gives lectures he stutters alot, and when he spells things out he runs right through the word. Bad teacher.
i absoulutely loathe this man. art history is my major, and he almost killed it for me. such a pretentious snob.
Went on and on about how amazing of a teacher he is and how he was giving us an edcutaion rather then a grade like some other teachers. Then a went and had us memorize over 100 slides! Right! I'll use that skill in the real world. This guys a totally snob.

Hardest class I've taken at UMass. He thinks he's the best teacher here and seems to enjoy talking about himself and how hard his class is. This is not an easy gened!! 3 papers and 2 exams - you'll need to memorize over 100 works of art for each test. TA's grade hard. You'll dedicate way too much of your time to this class if you take it.
PHENOMENAL!!! this guy really knows what he's talking about and his lectures are so entertaining- a great mix between fascianting information and witty humor. expect a lot of work, but this is college so its understandable.
likes to flip out to the class about who's not there, when clearly those who ARE there don't care. exams are hard- memorization of over 100 images and their significance/artist/location/time period but only tested on a handful. satisfies a couple gen-eds, which is good tho.
I had him for parts of 100 and 110...if you're looking for an easy gen ed, this is probably not the best to take. If you're interested in art history like I am, he's a fine teacher but he tends to jump all over the place and sometimes you don't even know which piece he's talking about, which got frustrating
Talks very fast, but knows his stuff right to the core. A really intelligent guy. I have no problem with memorization, even though we only had to memorize 30 images, so its a breeze. His handouts are very helpful, and his lectures are interesting and enjoyable to attend. You really have to pay attention if you want to do well.
I love Walter Denny. I think he is THE MAN actually. Yes, his class is hard but it is one of the most enjoyable if not the most enjoyable I am taking because his lectures are filled with passion and interest. I reccomend this class if you are interested in Art History or want to learn more. He fits a lot into one semester.
This is a hard class, but if you go to lecture, pay attention, and do the work you can get a lot from it. Do not take if you want a super-easy GenEd
Lots of work and reading which is almost necessary to pass.. if you're taking it as a Gen Ed, you will be putting in much more work than you would have liked. If you're interested in art history it might not be as bad but if you have no interest in it really at all then I definitely would not recommend it
This was by far my most difficult class I've ever had, but it was also my favorite class. I loved going, and Walter Denny is awesome. He's so passionate about what he teaches. Only take this class if you have a good deal of interest in art or art history.
This class was SO hard. His lectures are so boring and hard to stay awake in. For the midterm and final, we have to memorize over 100 images which sucks. the work in this class takes up way too much of my time. i had to take this class for my major and i am so glad that it is almost over with
Great class, but challenging. The papers were interesting, and his lectures are too. He spells too fast, and sometmes gives references numbers too fast, but overall, Excellent.
Faschinating teacher, works you like a mule.
Walter Denny is very entertaining, funny, and KNOWS HIS STUFF. He is very passionate about what he teaches and does his job very well. He does stutter a lot and spells words too fast, but it's not a big deal at all. On the other hand, WAAAAAAY too much is expected in this class. It is EXTREMELY difficult, and should not be a gen ed course.
what can you say about walter denny? the man is a true scholar. his classes are challenging, but enlightening. he may seem/be pompous at times, but he is accommodating and understanding about grades and work. he's also pretty hilarious, but i think he's the type of prof you either love or hate.
He really is a great guy, and a good teacher, but at least in ArtHist 115 there was not enough time to write down all of the information he crammed in. Information that you WILL need on the exams. Grading changes a lot with the TA's you get.
Denny is a great professor, he explains everything in a way that makes his lectures interesting and easy to take in. Listening to him speak is the only easy thing about the class though. This semester I have written 3 papers all over 8 pages and have taken two exams which require you to know the date, artist, style period and context of 130 slides!
Great class, but an amazingly large work load. Only take this class if you absolutely love art history and analyzing paintings, because you will be doing alott of it.
This was the first course of my college career and the only one which I actually learned something. Walter has an ability to turn a class with the potential to be dry into a class that you want to go to, and is an amazing professor who knows his stuff. The workload is hard, but if you're up for a challenge and work hard you'll get a good grade.
talks more about himself than the subject matter
Great professor! Great class! if you like art-his, you have to take him. he teaches 38 yrs, and he knows what he want to say w/o notes, he knows EVERYTHING. if you don't like art-his, it's still a pretty interesting class. but the bad thing is, there are so many info need to memorize. if you work hard, you will get good grade even didnt do good.
An incredible professor and really knows what he is talking about! But BEWARE this class will take up alot of your time. If you think this is an easy gen ed this is not the course for you. Needed to know over 100 images for the midterm!
i added this course last minute because it was the only thing that fit my sched with no prior knowledge about the professor or workload and i regret it. he has not changed how he teaches in over 30 years and claims less than 5% of his students have gotten As. he undoubtedly knows his stuff but comes off as condescending and unapproachable
Wicked tough class. Does not put notes up on the overhead, he just puts pictures up and talks about them. Attendance is a must. Not an easy gen ed by any means. Tons of work!
Nearly impossible to memorize all the information he throws at you. If he at least posted his lectures and slides online, we'd have a better shot at actually learning the material.
Comes off extremely condescending, and doesn't seem to care about his student. while he does know what hes talking about, and it is possible to pass the class, the topics for the papers are ridiculous and we have little to no preparation for the final and midterm. If the lectures where posted online than the class would be much easier.
extremely knowledgeable professor; he will help you if you ask. Sit up front it helps! class is what you put into it if people would stop complaining and do the work; although it is heavy at times, you'll do fine i studied for exams and took time on the papers and got an a- in the class with this being my first art history class ever.
His classes are intense...attendance isn't taken but you MUST be there or your screwed. None of the slides are posted online. The assignments given are lengthy, require travel time, and are difficult. Thankfully the TA grades your work, and not him
This was a tough class but worth it. The exams require memorization and details and the cathedral paper is a lot of work, as well. HOWEVER, I think Walter Denny is incredibly intelligent and passionate. I was so glad that I took his class. In all, I highly recommend it for those who are up for a challenge!
Before attending this class I had hardly any interest in the arts but Prof. Denny changed my mind quickly. This is not an easy course by any means but is very manageable as long as you attend lecture daily. This class is what you put into it and if you are looking for an art gen ed then go for Walters.
Lectures are really off-putting because he makes a lot of jokes about sex, southerners and conservatives. He's very knowledgeable, but his jokes make it hard to take him seriously.
This class isn't for people who can't handle real college courses. The material is dense, and difficult to memorize at times, but if you are looking to actually learn something substantial about art history, then this is THE BEST CLASS for you to take. Walter Denny is an amazing prof who really knows what he is talking about.
Definitely the worst professor I've ever had followed by one of the hardest classes I've ever had. He is completely bias and outlandish in things that he says...and I'm not talking about his lame sex and drinking jokes. He makes the class SO hard, loves to see kids fail, and it's HIS way or the highway. Completely stuck in his own ways. Terrible.
Intro to Visual Arts with this professor is NOT YOUR ORDINARY INTRO CLASS. This pompous teacher is living off of his somewhat "local fame" in the art community. Syllabus was 30 pages, lectures were extremely dry. Average nightly reading was 50 pages plus, from multiple books. Exams, IMPOSSIBLE. TAs and the professor have a tough crap attitude too..
Turns the class into architecture after week 3. Has you drawing up cathedral plans and writing very lengthy architecture proposals. Only focuses on islamic architecture too?
This class is hard, but worth it. And the cathedral project is actually quite interesting, very unique. Architecture is a huge part of art history, so of course he talks about it in some lectures, but he does not just teach Islamic architecture, like the previous person said!! Just go to class and take good notes, and get to know your TA!
He is an amazing professor, should aleast have him once during your time at umass!
Knows his stuff. Class is hella hard though 2/10
really conceited and pompous. not likable at all but he can teach. once you get over his self satisfied nature instead focus on the material, the class can be very interesting
Denny is brilliant. He's the reason I declared an Art History minor. This class is HARD. Don't take it as a gen ed unless you love art. The papers are hard but rewarding. Get to know your TA! They grade everything.
This is definitely the worst class I have ever taken in my Umass career. He speaks extremely fast, his papers are about 10 pages long, and he only has 2 tests throughout the semester. If you have the chance to drop the class, do it asap. His TA's aren't any help either because they don't explain anything. Easily the worst class I have ever taken.
Excellent professor. He's really the reason why I became interested in art history. He has an amazing ability to excite students about things they may have never otherwise become interested in. Very difficult and expects a lot, but his high standards come from his belief in his students. He's also hilarious. Come prepared to laugh.
Walter Denny not only gives few, extremely large assignments, but he also schedules them the same week as your midterms. He believes he teaches the most important class on campus, and doesn't care about workload.
Walter Denny is a good instructor if you just show up for all the lectures and take some notes then you don't have to read the book at all. However, there are a lot of names and dates that you need to memorize. Talking to your TA helps a huge amount!
Great prof plenty of jokes, sticks it to repubs and xtians. Good lectures, if you show up and take a few notes u know what he wants.
Anyone from Turkey can be happy. If you are not white, like from Egypt, you needed them to give you everything!
Actually the worst, hardest class I have ever taken. I am interested in art history and have decent grades, but this class will get you. The papers are close to impossible and he does not help you in the slightest. And the information he talks about in lectures is extremely random and feels irrelevant so its hard to take notes. Good luck.
Friendly and intelligent guy who is extremely passionate about the subject. His lectures aren't boring at all but they tend to be chock-full of information so you can't skip and have to fully pay attention. Exams are really difficult because of how many images and their information you have to memorize, but everything is graded fairly.
Great prof/class imo, straightforward with expectations (serious but not crazy high) of the class from the start. 3 papers and two exams were all fine if you don't procrastinate too much (still doable if you do). Lectures on individual artists towards the end of the course were fire. Nice and very knowledgable/passionate professor, keeps it real.
Very passionate about what he teaches- lectures are also all verbal (no visual aid except the art). I would not suggest taking it for a gen ed, it is hard to grasp unless you are also passionate/ have previous knowledge. We had 2 exams and 2 lengthy essays, got average grades on both despite studying. Good guy but a lot of material.
Lectures are super boring and notes are hard to take when nothing seems important because theres so much information, the book is super long and boring and does not help, the essays are ridiculously complex, and the exams are crazy elaborate. Find another gen-ed
This was the worst course I have ever taken, and I love art and have taken college art courses before. Useless lectures, and essay prompts are way too long and specific. Exams involve memorizing about 100 works of art with date, artist and other information. I am honestly sad I took this class:(
Interesting topic, too much work for a gen-ed
This class has become the bane of my existence. I never knew 50 minutes could last so long. I took this class to fulfill two Gen-Ed requirements and boy do I wish I took two other classes! The syllabus is literally 38 pages. What struck me the most was Walter romanticizes rape in paintings and argues that the black maids featured weren't enslaved.F
Walter Denny does not understand how to teach in a 21st Century classroom. He does not teach to educate students, but to gloat about his achievements and interest in Islamic architecture which has literally NOTHING to do with the course description. DO. NOT. TAKE. HIS. CLASS.
The teacher refuses to record his lectures on Echo 360. He does not share slides or the relevant images with the class. He incorrectly references the textbook by giving the wrong names or numbers for the art. This professor talks at his students making any effort to involve them. He could lecture to an empty room and it would not make a difference
Nice guy, the course material is interesting but the lectures can admittedly be boring, as there isn't much student engagement. I have fallen asleep in class before. Most of the information is verbal, so it's a bit hard to take notes. The work isn't that bad for a gen-ed, but tests are kind of difficult. Quite a bit of architecture content
I would not recommend anyone take Denny's course, it is way more difficult than it needs to be. He assigns more papers than any other art history professor and the tests are harder as well. The lectures aren't mandatory which is the only positive but you need to go if you want to do well because the slides don't have words on them.
This dude is the worst. Memorizing 100 terms, dates, and artists for exams in my opinion benefits no one. Way too much stress for such a futile class. Guess what Walter? EVERYTHING YOU MAKE US MEMORIZE IS ACCESSIBLE VIA TWO CLICKS OF ANY COMPUTER. I am an engineering major, but I can't see how this would even help an art history major. Please quit.
If you love yourself do NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am about to drop out due to this class. I don't even think Jesus can help me with this one. I am actually begging you if you are reading this please, I care about you, do NOT take this class.
This was definitely not an easy class, but the material covered was really interesting to learn about, especially with Walter's long history in the subject. You can tell he's really passionate about art and teaching it. I was scared by the other reviews before the class, but give ArtHist 115 a chance if you're at all interested in art and history!
This is a very difficult course but you will learn a lot. Lectures can be very hard to follow so always make sure to talk to your classmates and look at quizlets when it's time for exams and papers. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS!!!!1 I used to do that until I took this course.
This class can be difficult with the heavy amount of papers, but you can definitely pass/excel in the class when you pay close attention during the lectures and do the readings from the two textbooks that are needed for the class. The lectures were posted on Moodle, but it may be easier to attend the zoom classes in real time if the class is remote
Walter knows a lot about art and is interesting but not a great teacher. If you're looking for a gen-ed or you don't like art, don't even think about AH115. A lot of papers and exams are ridiculously hard but if you study a lot, you can do good. I was only able to do well bc my other classes are a breeze. Good accelerated course for art major/minor
Please dont take this class, already an awful gen Ed and this man made it 10x worse. No notes on any of the lecture slides, 2 tests each with 3 essays and 1 short answer section and had to memorize over 500 terms for each. Syllabus is continuous so you dont know youll have to write 4, 10+ page papers until after the add/drop period, just dont
Walter was my favorite prof this semester. Though there is a lot of work, it's clear that he wants his students to learn. He is passionate. I've been told that it can be tricky to take notes on his lectures by people who have had him as a guest, but that was not my experience. I wouldn't recommend as a gen ed but great option for art or AH majors.
This was probably the worst class I could have ever chosen to take as a GenEd with one the worst professors ever. He is incredibly arrogant and rude. The amount of work given was awful considering I had just taken this class as a GenEd. Going to lectures doesnt even help with the midterm or final. I would never take another class with him again.
This class was extremely hard but we were told it was going to be. If you do the reading and pay attention to the lectures you will make it through the class with a B. Take time to write the papers and study for the midterm and final. Requires a trip off campus. You will learn so much but if you aren't looking for that don't take this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS. I am warning you: I took this for my art minor only because it was required. If I took it as a GenEd, it wouldn't be worth it at all. He grades unfairly in my experience. His slides have no words on them and he lectures from memory. You don't know what you need to know for exams before he throws a 100 slide review at you.
As a non-art person, I could not follow the structure of this class. I am used to scientific subjects!
The content of this class was unique and interesting, if a little bulky in nature. Professor Denny aims to entertain in his lectures, and most of the time it works. Lecture slides and review slides have NO information besides photos and sometimes art names/years on them. Definitely not an easy class, but a worthwhile one.
I took this course when Walter was teaching it for the final time. Though the amount of memorization was immense, and the content difficult, he truly is one of the greats. He is funny, shares half a century's worth of stories, and knows what he's talking about. Not for everyone, but he genuinely loves Islamic art so much.
