teacher is very knowledgable of information presented. Studying is a must to pass.. Have to read lecture notes and book to do well on tests. Quizes and attendence are extra credit.
Dodd knows his stuff. This class had a lot of interesting information and I trully enjoyed it. This class is not extremely easy, but it is also not difficult. Just attend class and take good notes and you will do fine.
Class could use a few more visuals to illustrate differences, other than that, study and you'll do fine.

He is rude and has very poor direction skills as far as instructions. He is very anal and will not give breaks. He braggs about tenure and his personal life. More than half of the class is not passing his class.
*Pretty easy class- if you just show up to every class and do a little bit of reading on topics that confuse you, an A is definitely doable with minimal effort
He goes fast in his lecture and his study reviews are not what is on the test. You can read the book but it will not help much. He is tough and his paper that is due is to hard and complicated.
couyogg
Dodd was really flexible. The papers were easy. Quizzes are off 6 page readings. We mainly just wanted movies from other cultures, and talked about other cultures. EASY, EASY, EASY!!
Do not take this class if you are looking for something easy. The material is complicated. You must know biology prior in order to understand. The paper required is very complex and complicated and time consuming.I am a straight A student and I'm barely getting a B so far. He's a good teacher but he goes very fast. Prepare to study!
He is a passionate teacher in his field, had a whole lot of experience to share with the class; hence, he made it very interesting. He walks you through the main writing assignment so that you wont cram up an awful paper at the end of the semester.
Dodd is a great instructor and knows what he is talking about. The class is incredibly easy as long as you've taken high school biology. He gives lots of extra credit and curves the class by 5 percent. He's very fair in terms of grading. His quizzes and tests test your knowledge on the subject as well as your logic.
Dr. Dodd's class was okay. It was rather boring at sometimes, but it was sort of easy. His exams are 50 multiple choice, and two 4 page essays. It was an okay class; I wouldn't want to take it again, but Dodd was a nice guy and tried to make everything easy.
Worst professor I have ever had! He does not adequately prepare students for tests, he does not get papers back on time, but expects the revised papers back on time (1 week instead of 4). Then givs a sob story of why he couldn't get them done, "you should have to know what it is like to have to grade papers." He just doesn't do his job!
Worst and hardest professor I ever taken during my college life. He never reply to email. Grades hardly on the paper as though we are at his level. Exams are very hard and have nothing to do with lecture nor book. So unless you are able to critically think, you will not get a decent grade. Avoid if possible or else you will regret taking this class
Do not take this class if you can avoid it! Very boring and the tests are impossible to study for. The paper was easy but it is not worth much. He does scale so 85%=A, 75%=B... but most of the class is failing anyway.
If you absolutely need to take this class, take it with a different instructor. He is so closed minded and boring I sometime felt like twitching in class and yelling out "We're not made from monkeys!!!" because he drove me insane. His tests are difficult and there's no way to study for them, and he grades the paper very strictly.
He is really unhelpful. Doesn't answer emails. His tests are very difficult and almost impossible to study for. He constantly compared us to Ivy League students and asked how we got into college. DO NOT take him.
Dr. Dodd really knows his archaeolgy. He is a walking textbook, but because of that his classes are challenging. He has a ten page paper, 3 tests, and quizes for extra credit. He doesn't take roll but you don't want to miss class if you plan on passing the course. The class is really hard, but you will walk away having actually learned alot.
This teacher was easy if you're into reading. all i had to do was actually read the book and i passed the tests. the tests come straight from the book& he gives practice exams a day before the exam and a lot of those Qs are on the exam. if you want to be lazy, dont take him. if you're up to the challenge and responsible then he is perfect.
Very difficult professor. The material is easy but it is presented in a way that is incomprehensible. His lectures do not cover his exams nor does the text book. His required paper is easy if you go to his office hours every week beginning week one but if not you may sink. I have a 4.0 but it will change.
Dr.Dodd is a great professor, but you have to be ready to study a lot. There are 3 midterms and one final.Final is half comprehensive and other half on last material covered. Only 50 T/F and multiple choice. Must read the main text and the book assigned. Book goes with paper. Form or join a study group. Helps a lot.He will help, if asked.
Great professor, knows pretty much everything about anthropology. HOwever his class is a challenge. 3 midterms and one final. Final is comprehensive, and one paper on the assigned book. Must read main text. He grades on a curve, gives extra credit quizes, and adds points to your ending total grade. Study well and read, and you can get an A too.
Dr. Dodd is helpful, grades on a curve, and reviews prior to the test which most that he goes over lands on the test. Attendance is mandatory because what he goes over in class will be on tests as well as material from the book. I never studied for tests but always showed up to class and did just fine in the class. It just takes some effort.
Dodd can be a very dry lecturer, but the content of the course is very good and for those who are interested in the content, it is very well worth it. The content is hard, but he has a generous curve, so don't sweat that so much.
I liked the class material, but the tests are above average difficulty and he grades hard on the format and content of the paper. This is not an easy course for your upper division GE. If you take this class be prepared to be challenged. 85% is an A, but the average grade on tests was in the 65% range.
Not for the faint hearted. You will go through the entire book. Both mid-term and final are 5-short essays... don't let that scare you off since they are focused questions and the material is in the book or covered in class. The hardest "A" I have earned so far... and it felt good. You get back what you put in, I recommend this class.
Horrible professor! Promised us a month to revise our final paper and ended up giving us a week. This guy is not reasonable or flexible WHATSOEVER even when HE makes a mistake. I am about to graduate and I have to say, his class was one of the worst college experiences I've had! DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS GUY! Just awful!!!
Dr. Dodd is a fair teacher. You will need to do the readings if you want an A in the class. Just doing the key terms and attending class will get you a B or C. He grades on a curve, 85 is an A. He does give out a lot of D's and F's but that's only because people dont do the work. I got an A in the class!
Tough but fair. If archaeology theory interest you then take this class. Material is difficult but Dodd doesn't expect you to know it inside and out. As long as you are familiar with the general idea you'll do fine. Don't let the key terms or 10 page essay trick you into thinking this is a hard class.
Great professor! He obviously loves what he does and is always full of fascinating facts. 3 exams, 1 final and 2 papers. Study your notes and you are good. Gives time to revise paper so its technically only 1 paper. Some reading required. Just be prepared to earn your grade. Highly recommended.
I absolutely hated this class. Not because it was hard, but because it just wasn't interesting to me. I received a B, and probably because I never studied or did the vocab review he would give us. The class overall is simple as long as you put in the effort, but if the class doesn't sound interesting to you then DON'T TAKE IT.
His class is ridiculously hard. If you aren't an anthropology major then you will be lost. He tests on material he hasn't gone over. His tests are very difficult and you most of the people in the class didn't get any better then a C. If this is for upper g.e and not required TAKE ANOTHER CLASS!!!!
Loved this class and Dr. Dodd as well. He was one of the best teachers I've taken these past 2 12 years at Fresno State. His class is super easy. His exams are basically everything in his lecture. I never ever study and managed to pull a B in the class.
I'm not an Anthropology major so this class was exhausting for me. He isn't the most entertaining with lectures, but he clearly knows what he's talking about. 4 exams, extra credit quizzes, 2 papers (but the 2nd is a revision of the 1st). Keep up with the readings, get primary sources for your paper, & remember he grades on a curve!
Great professor, just be prepared to go to class everyday. He only has his notes in class and not on blackboard. However you do not need the textbook.
Dr. Dodd is a great professor. He is very nice and very willing to help students understand the material. He is the type of instructor I wish I had for every class. He expects you to work for your grade, but it shouldn't be that difficult to achieve a B if you pay attention during lecture. I would definitely take him again.
His professor is tough , he gives test reviews on things that aren't even on test . Long lectures , the vocabulary is ridiculous . You must be present in class .
His professor is tough , he gives test reviews on things that aren't even on test . Long lectures , the vocabulary is ridiculous . You must be present in class. 4 exams, extra credit quizzes, 2 papers (but the 2nd is a revision of the 1st). If you are looking to get an easy A take another class!!!!!!!!!!
Two midterm papers that are 6-7 pages. The due date is in the syllabus not the schedule. You don't need the main textbook just the little one. Questions on the practice test is opposite of actual test. He answers questions and will talk to you after class. He's never answered my emails. But he answers my questions in person
If you're into Humans Evolvement and have a good understanding about genomics then I'd recommend it, however if you are looking for an easy A this is NOT it! Be ready to read and come to class everyday, doesn't post powerpoint and you really have to study for his test, he does give pop quizzes that are extra credit (study for those too) Easy C-
If you are taking this thinking it is an GE class forget about it! You will work your tail off for a B! Vocabulary coming out your ears. If you want an A be prepared to donate lots of time studying. He does NOT use blackboard so you are never sure where you stand in the class in with him. He does test on lecture material which is not in the book.
I attended every class period and took clear notes. All i did was study the notes and use the word lists he gave on blackboard and i always passed the tests with A's.. Some people really struggled, but i personally did not find the class to be that challenging. You just need to be clear on what he lectures on!
You really have to study. I managed to pass with a C but he's really tough. Half the time I had no clue what he was taking about. In class I would have the book required open to understand his lectures. If you want to pass it's mandatory you assist when he reviews for the tests. What helped me was taking pics of the preview exams and study that!
His voice is extremely monotone. He doesn't make the class exciting. Occasionally uses powerpoint for lectures. Only perk is he goes over a study guide the class before the exam. Essay criteria made no sense.
The term paper format is very confusing. He seems to make up the format and it falls somewhere in between MLA and APA with made up stuff thrown in there. Does not take role. Pop quizzes for extra credit. Lectures are hard to sit through questions on the test like "what size was monkey that we talked about? Small medium or large?" I begged for
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. He is a tough grader, you have to kill yourself in order to get a C! DON'T TAKE HIM HE MAKES YOUR SEMESTER VERY STRESSFUL!
He was honestly a great professor, you basically get what you put in. If you actually read and go to lecture, you'll pass.
This class was probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. His lectures are dry, but, he is very passionate when he talks about course material. The paper was difficult and he is a difficult grader. Attendance was optional.
Doctor Dodd is a quirky man. I can relate to him. He is a tough grader and makes his students work for their grades. I wouldn't plan on skipping out on his class, because they're the sort you need to be there for. His notes need their own notes. He cracks a lot of jokes and makes learning fun. I would take him again.
He's a nice guy, and very knowledgeable of his field. He can be dry, and tests are hard if you don't study. Curves grade.
He grades on a curve so that's the upside
don't take this professor, tough graders, lecture are useless. READ the book if you want to pass. The term papers were super confusing. You had a better chance of passing with a different professor
He doesnt use Blackboard, his term papers have the most ridiculous formatting that you wont understand, & his lectures are so so dry.
This class is unnecessarily hard. Attendance is not mandatory but basically is because some of the things he speaks about are on the tests. He has study guides but they do not help AT ALL towards the test. Super strict on the term paper. He is not lenient whatsoever.
This course was unnecessarily hard. The exams are mostly based on class lecture notes; if you don't show up you will miss important notes. His term paper prompt has 4 pages of specific formatting! I've spent more time on this general class than my major classes! Don't do it to yourself; take a different professor.
Never stops talking. Made me late to my next class 4 times. The paper is confusing and the format he created must be followed exactly. Also the book for the paper is absolutely boring. So is his lecture.
This class is unnecessarily hard. Study guides are almost useless in preparation for your exams. He does a review day that is also useless. Your grade is based off of 4 exams and 2 papers. I'm a great test taker and I failed almost every exam. I studied. I showed up to class. I took notes. Nothing seemed to help. Do not take this class!!
This class was absolutely a farce. I'm not sure which is dryer: the course material or his lectures because it felt like a chore just to keep up in this class. Just like in class, you can tell who kisses up to him and who's really experienced this course. Do not take this course unless you're a masochist who enjoys wasting an hour of your time.
Ima be Raw about this class. Anthro 161 DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM! We literally had the study guide done the class before the exam and the essay was mostly graded on the format he wanted rather than the information written from the book. The textbook wasnt even used AT ALL. He gives no extra credit. I went to class EVERDAY and I didnt pass.
The key to passing this class is taking really good notes (which you can't do unless you attend every class) and reading the textbook. Not sure why a lot of reviews are saying that the review days are useless because they were extremely helpful.
I can't say this enough; don't do this to yourself. He lectures, a lot. He only tests you on his lectures, too. I was able to pass, but I worked harder on this general education class than any other class I have ever taken. One more time for the people in the back: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
He was an excellent professor. Very knowledgeable! I extremely enjoyed this class. Grade is based on 2 essays based on a book, tests and quizzes. Attend class! Most of the test is what he lectures in class. It helped me to read the text book too, some of the test questions come from there. As long as you study, you'll pass.
His review days weren't very helpful to me at least, only like 25% of what we covered on the study guide was actually on the exam, everything else is from lecture which can get confusing sometimes. He also doesn't post grades so keep track of what you get on each assignment. He does grade on a curve though! Nice professor, just tough grader.
For online lectures, he does not require attendance. However, he has pop quizzes after every test which are for extra credit. He has study guides that mirror the test and have the answers to all of them. Do that and you'll do well on the tests. The research paper is a bit harder. Read the book, and follow the prompt. Not a lot of feedback.
All he does is lecture and he lectures fast, I always had to take pictures of his slides because he doesn't slow down for you. The notes are not even worth taking because none of his notes are on the exams. Only good thing is that he provides study guides and the answers. Def consider another professor.
His Anth 161 class is one of the most interesting classes I've taken at State. Every class is a lecture (aside from test days) but it's clear he understands the material he teaches and he makes the information easy to understand. If you pay attention and take notes, you'll pass the tests just fine.
Each day is filled with more information so each exam is almost impossible to study for. Content is not even that hard but words things horribly. Nice dude, he will help if needed but is not very lenient.
I really do like Professor because he's very kind, but his teaching style is quite old school. He doesn't update or even use Canvas slightly at all, but rather uses his own grading criteria so it's very hard to know where you stand unless you email him which he is always helpful when replying. Very tough grader when it comes to the essay!
I wanted to like this professor however his lectures were boring and he provided way to much information if you enjoy studying and reading you should take his class if you want to slack off this class is not for you he does not use canvas only for the exams
This class is pretty boring, might be interesting to those interested in the topic. Nonetheless, lectures are pretty easy as long as you show up to class and take notes. Quizzes are not to bad as long as you show up for review days which do help. There is a midterm paper and a final paper which can be a bit challenging due to the strict formatting.
Tons of material, but the tests are easy to study for if you use the practice tests and key terms list. If you are bad with names...well good luck there's a lot to remember. The content for the term paper is interesting to research, and he is open for discussion about the topic too. There is so much content, be mindful with your notetaking.
Personally, loved his lectures & the passion he shows. This is not a class for those who do not want to put in the effort to apply their own knowledge. Lots of reading & studying, so DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! He will take time to talk about the term paper in class & his super helpful if you reach out to him. Helpful exam study guides & summaries.
One of my favorite professors ever. He knows a little bit of everything, but you really gotta be interested in the subjects and materials within the course itself. Sit in the front, be interested, and do the work. Class practice exams, feedback on term papers, and extra credit opportunities.
This class is one of the hardest ones I took in my academic career. Work Hard, study, attend lectures, review all the material he gives you, and most of all go on exam review days (extremely important). This class is not impossible to pass but just requires a lot of hard work for it. Make sure you do your best on the exams and term papers.
This class has 3 exams 3 quizzes and 1 6-page minimum term paper. He gets sidetracked in his lectures and you often don't know what is on the exams since there's a lot of reading and his lectures are hard to follow. Furthermore, his exams are worded in a difficult way. avoid his class if you can. The term paper is VERY difficult as well.
He is a nice guy but keep in mind, his lectures are not accessible on canvas so all notes are taken in class. He will let you record his lectures and take pictures. There are 3 exams which are lecture heavy. I didn't really use the book, however, there is a second book which will be for your term paper. He will not remind you to read this one.
This professor was rude. He took forever to grade and showed no remorse if something came up. No late work was accepted and he made sure to show he did not care. Avoid if possible.
Try to avoid taking this course. He is very old and makes lectures very boring. His exams are terrible. You are able to take them online at home, but the tests themselves are very difficult. The tests are the only assignments you really have so it weighs heavily on your grade.
Lectures are super boring and don't really prepare you for the exams. He also lacks humility and seems to be unaware of the fact that he's not teaching a group of grad students.
Even if you attend all the lectures which I highly recommend that you do, takes notes, go to SI tutoring, and read the book you will fail because the only thing you get graded for is the exams. Take someone else.
Has a very dull and mundane approach to class. Only grades on quizzes and exams. It is very difficult material to understand and review. Gives horrible feedback and is not very technologically savvy. If you do not put in the work day in and day out and go to SI meetings you will fail.
Don't let these reviews get to you. He isn't a pro on canvas, true, but he's sweet and his lectures are easy enough. Yes, you are graded only on papers and exams, but it isn't hard at all. He is a great and smart professor. He is sweet and understanding as well. A lot of students in my class just disliked him, but he's great. I would take again.
It's very important you attend class. It isn't mandatory, however he doesn't post the slides on Canvas. Take notes & attend the SI sessions. Only graded on 4 Exams & 1 paper twice (the initial one & the edited version) You have to show up to take the exams online then check in with him when you are done or you will receive a 0.
He's a horrible professor, really boring, doesn't even tell you how to prepare for test, your basically going into the test and getting blindsided. If you need to get your IB done, don't take this guy he will only hold you back. He has 4 exams and one paper but its in two parts (he makes it very complicated).
You have to pay really close attention to the lectures or else you will struggle so much with the exams. He gives study guides for every chapter and each study guide is about 50 questions long. The exams usually cover up to 3 chapters at a time so you have to study about 150 questions for only 50 to be in the exam.
First off, the class was enjoyable. It's important to genuinely care about the subject. Professor provides 2–3 reviews for the exams. He selects about 25–30 questions from each review and combines them to create the exam. So, make sure to study the reviews Lastly, the lectures are engaging, especially if you have an interest in Anthropology.
The professor is very old fashioned, and extremely lecture heavy. This class took up more time than my regular courses did and it's not even my major. The professor is reasonable and nice but is lack of canvas use is evident and may make the class feel disjointed. Be prepared to study.
Do NOT take this professor. You are graded only on exams and a paper, so there is not room to mess up. He's monotone and speaks so slowly so I don't recommend taking him in the morning if you don't want to fall asleep. If you have ssd accommodations, I'd advise against taking the class, I had lots of problems with him. 10/10 would NOT recommend.
Is old school but in a bad way. Doesn't use Canvas very often. You can only get notes during lecture, he doesn't post pp on Canvas. Grade is based on tests and a paper. Offers extra credit through quizzes. Would not take this class unless you're really into anthropology (I took it to cover an elective)(Worst choice I've ever made).
Doesn't give homework. Huge downfall considering the test don't match the study guides 1/2 the time. Nice professor but gives lectures like this isn't some of our first time learning some of these things. Don't miss class, if you do take this course.
