Lecture are mostly demos, and I usually learns from recitations. Can't find a professor nowadays that one can take two shots for each of the three exams, and he is dropping the lowest one of them :D
Amazing guy! Gives up his much of his time to help students. Lectures are full of fun demonstrations. Homework can be difficult, but helps grasp the concepts needed for the exams. Make sure to start early. There is always help at the Physics Clinic. Always attend recitation because they go more in depth while lecture is more of an overview.
He was very helpful. I loved that all the homework were written and not Mastering Physics. HE actually does demos in class which is good for learning. If you have a good TA with his gems, plus the TA reinforcing you will do great. He gave a bunch of extra credit. As long as you dedicate the time you should to the course you will do well.
nice person
Freeman loves his students. Very understanding, caring, and always looking for ways to improve his class. The exams are somewhat curved, the lectures are really cool. Had no experience in astronomy or physics, recommended for students who don't do so well in biology or chemistry.
Freeman is hilarious, open, and a great and caring professor. He grades the class very easily and really cares about making the class accessible and easy for everyone. I'm taking a class with him next semester and I'm really excited.
Dr. Freeman is an amazing professor & all-around great guy. He is humble, kind, and versatile. He goes out of his way to ensure that his students understand the material-- he held multiple study sessions late on Sunday nights, created a final project to suit the likes of non-STEM majors, & genuinely cares that students enjoy their time at Syracuse.
This class is a pretty easy B or A... depending how much work you put into it.
3 exams throughout the semester, homework is online so you have to buy the book, and the lectures are really long. A lot of people never went to class but I don't think I would of did good in the class if I didn't show up. The labs are easy points and so is the homework. He also gives random assignments and extra credit. He's really funny just hard
Just be careful with the lab session. In Freeman's grading program, if you fail the lab, you fail the class. I have done great job in every exam. However, I massed up with my lab session, then I got a B. :)
Professor Freeman is genuinely one of the best professors I've ever had. He actually teaches the concepts of physics and helps you understand how they work. He's funny and his lectures have a lot of demonstrations so you never get bored. He also does video solutions to homework problems and practice sessions. You'll definitely love this class !
Spends a lot of in class time doing things that won't really help you with homework or the course in general, but very nice guy who's fairly accessible and wants his students to do well. His grading curve makes getting a good grade fairly easy.
Dr. Freeman is a very nice and caring professor who wants the best for his students and makes sure we're all able to do the best we can. However, his teaching style is a little hard to follow and his lecture notes are terrible. Luckily he has a really curved grading scheme which helps. He's probably your best bet if you need PHY 211.
Awesome instructor, for such a tough class. Would not want to take this class again but would take another one of his classes.
Lectures are not mandatory and you probably don't need to go to understand the material, but Walter is a gem so show up for him. At the very least, go for the last day of class because he'll probably sing for you since he's in a choir. Make sure you go to labs and study for tests and you'll be fine. I did the bare minimum and came out with a B+.
Favorite professor that I've had. I am currently enrolled in his astronomy course after having a great experience with him last semester in physics. Same as before he makes himself very available and seems to always work his butt off for his students. He makes sure materials are cheap as well as reliable. Always tries to keep things interesting.
Loved being in his class. He understands the students that take his class and as long as you try he makes easy to get an A. He knows so much about astronomy and makes his class fun to attend.
Freeman is a super chill professor with a great attitude towards teaching. He gets that AST101 is an into class and makes it really easy to get an A if you put in a small amount of effort. Definitely take this class if you want an easy science class.
Dr. Freeman is a very chilled out, passionate, funny, and caring professor. He trys to make class as interesting as possible. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. He holds office hours, and answers any questions you might have. His tests can be hard but they're weighted heavy so your grade shouldn't suffer.
He is a genius and understands not everyone is a physics major, good sense of humor.
Good guy, cares about everyone doing well. Understands the students and knows what he is doing. Class was not hard, as long as you show up for class you will be fine. Lectures are long and can get boring, but, he does very well in trying to ease that boredom.
Freeman is a solid teacher. His grade breakdown allows you to do well even with poor test scores, which can be rather difficult if you do not study diligently and really understand the concepts. His grading scheme also says that 80%+ is an A, so you are geared to really succeed in his class. Beware the tests, but if you study, you should be okay!
I really enjoyed going to lecture, and Professor Freeman was able to make parts really interesting. I have been wanting to learn about astronomy for a really long time, and I am glad to have taken it with Freeman because he is really passionate. The exams are difficult, but the grading scale, papers, and lab will still allow you to succeed.
Very nice professor. His lectures are amazing and interesting. He knows what he is talking about. You can learn a lot by just attending the lectures. Exams are hard, you need to be really well-prepared. Not easy to get an A, but worth your work.
An excellent and very enthusiastic professor! If you pay attention and take good notes, you will most likely do well. He breaks down topics so they are very easy to understand.
very very hard class but Dr. Freeman is amazing.
I would die for him
Amazing lecturer, professor Freeman is humorous and easy-going, this is the most interesting class I've ever taken in my life. Remember to read textbook before exam!
Perhaps the best teacher i've had in my life. Very caring about students and there is always a solution to improve your grade!
Walter is the most caring professor I've had at Syracuse University. While he makes his astronomy class intentionally difficult, the grading scale more than makes up for it. He is passionate about not only teaching, but ensuring his students learn from him. He will work with you to make sure you succeed if you so desire.
His tests are based on the lecture, the lecture tutorial book, and the labs. He doesn't really use the book to teach, so don't waste your money buying one. Overall he cares about his students a lot, but if you're taking this class as a non-science major, it may be very difficult for you.
WONDERFULLLL I LOVE HIM!!! SUCH A GREAT GUY
the class is fun but the exams are hard. recitation problems and homework are a piece of cake but the questions in the exams are hard. goes over very simple questions in the lecture and expects us to solve complex ones for homework and even harder ones in the exam.
Very passionate about the subject matter and will make time to meet you outside of class. Not the best at explaining things but will do what he can to help.
He's a very odd professor. Very friendly. Goes through the topics pretty quick, TA will be your best guide to pass the class.
Friendly See conditions to reduce pressure, such as that near the midterm time, decrease hw
FANTASTIC PROF! Every lecture is super interesting (and this is coming from a non-science major). Exams are difficult but he grades on a curve so its easy to succeed as long as you put in effort. He also hosts his own review sessions before exams and is very understanding if you have academic accommodations. Couldnt recommend him more!!!
Professor Freeman is just incredible. He's the most passionate, empathetic, and knowledgeable professor I've had. He targets his 101 class toward those who aren't necessarily interested in science, and makes the material interesting and easy to understand. The tests can be a bit daunting, but seeing as you only need an 80 for an A, it wasn't bad.
This professor caught me extremely off guard this semester with how accessible he made himself to students. He went above and beyond making himself available for 14 hours a day to review for the final. I went in to study extremely frustrated with my grades in the class and could see how hard he is trying to have every student be successful.
A great genuine guy who cares about all of his students even though it is a large lecture class. You can tell he loves what he does in life and encourages his students to love astronomy just as much as he does. He's very easily accessible and offers help if you seek it out.
The exams are difficult and very different from the practice exams. There are also group exams in recitation and homework is long. He tries to explain but it just gets more confusing.
Its hilarious how he even is a professor at SU. He doesnt even teach the students but instead acts like a social justice warrior. He basically wasted an entire lecture to apologize to the Chinese about coronavirus. He completely neglected me when asking about the physics problems. The recitations are pure non sense with the TAs acting like clowns
Dr. Freeman is quite literally one of the very best professors Syracuse University has! He is incredibly diversely knowledgeable and puts his students before himself in so many ways! I especially recommend Dr. Freeman to students with disabilities!
I had a difficult time communicating with him during traditional circumstances, but once our classes had to be online he became even more difficult to work with. He cares about his students, but only certain ones with certain circumstances. These communication difficulties translated to his teaching and never explained the concepts very well.
Prof. Freeman is a horrible professor. He failed to teach this semester. Luckily, you can pass this class due to the huge curve but you might not learn much at all, as I honestly did not learn anything. He is accessible outside of class but he made me feel worse for not understanding a concept and for trying to ask questions.
walter is one of the smartest professors I've ever had and he's a cool person in general. i don't care about astronomy at all but he made it interesting and the class was so easy. like all you have to do is go to lab and show up on test days
Doesn't really care but acts like it. Decided the entirety of his class cheated not because of math, but because of "similar wording"
Nobody liked this class
Water is a great person. Knows his stuff and is passionate about what he teaches. Lectures can be a little wacky, but he cares about his students and will do anything to make sure they learn and have fun. Accessible, funny and would definitely take another class with him (AST 101 is sometimes grueling but its worth it for Walter Freeman).
Since this was on online class this semester, it was pretty unorganized. Professor Freeman is an absolutely amazing human being, but I never understood anything during class. He does assign a lab weekly and a project every few weeks to do with your lab group, some of which are complicated. Textbook is free online with a link. Lots of work.
An unusual semester bc of the pandemic, Prof Walter tries his best to deliver the best experience for his students as it is an in-person class. He's awesome, hilarious, and caring. Went lenient with deadlines and canceled all exams replacing them with papers, but group projects were awful bc ur teammates wouldn't show up. Just quite of tech issues.
Professor Freeman was an absolute sweetheart. Even though the class was fully online because of corona restrictions, he made an effort to connect to everyone and was extremely understanding given the circumstances. The labs were manageable and there were no tests. Him and his TAs deserve a raise, anybody is lucky to have him as a professor.
professor freeman is such a gem!! he can be a little all over the place when it comes to responding to emails and grading but he is knowledgeable of it. the TA's tend to be accessible more often. labs every week and projects every two weeks so make sure you have reliable lab partners to work with. very lenient with deadlines!!
I really didn't learn anything in his class. I taught myself a majority of the material and I felt very adrift about what we were learning. He relies heavily on students having taken high school physics and his TAs, so if you don't rely on your TA and didn't take it in HS you're kinda on your own.
His 3 hour class is given the work of a 5 hour class and he relies heavily upon his TAs to teach instead of teaching the material himself.
His lectures are pretty worthless, as he wastes most of the class period talking about logistics instead of actual material. Relies on recitation and TA's to teach the material, both of which aren't very good. Assignments are long, hard, and barely relevant to what you cover in class. You won't learn anything, but you only need an 80 to get an A.
I took this class because of the great reviews on here but I had a bad experience. As an async recitation student, we got 2x as much work as the synchronous students just bc I wasn't there on BB. He gets sidetracked and will never finish an example, just expects you to know how to finish these complex, contextual problems (and the TAs are no help).
there's so much busy work for this class that it gets discouraging and he doesn't help to explain how to do anything at all
Very friendly guy. Loves to interact with his students. However, he relies too much on students learning the material through recitation instead of actual lecture. He also tends to go off on tangents in lecture. With online recitation, nobody talks and you learn nothing. Homeworks are very long and difficult so prepare for a lot of late nights.
Walter is an amazing guy. He is incredibly passionate and kind. Unfortunately, this class was very poorly set up. His lectures dont cover much material, he relies way too heavily on the TA-led recitation to actually teach you, which doesnt work out. Long, hard homework. Even longer and harder exams. Very hard class, and you wont learn much.
Most professors teach the material in lecture and use recitation to reinforce what's already been taught. Not this guy. This dude expects students to "teach each other" in recitation and glosses over important concepts in lecture. Extremely disorganized and poor teaching style. You're better off using khanacademy to teach yourself the material.
Teaching style leaves a lot to be desired. Lectures are disorganized and students go into recitation clueless. Homeworks are absurdly long and made all the more difficult by the fact that the Professor hardly goes over the fundamentals in class. He is a friendly guy but that doesn't make up for his poor teaching style.
Knows what he is teaching, but is unable to break it down for those who are trying to learn. Gets off topic fairly quickly, and doesn't give you feedback on your homework. All you see is your grade, but not what you did wrong on it.
The very best professor Easy to stay tuned
AST101 is not an astronomy class, its a physics class. Dr. Freeman looks like PFT Commenter, which is cool, but the man treats this class like its a 300 level physics course. I took this as a senior just looking for an interesting and easy class and got the exact opposite. Look elsewhere for classes fulfilling a lab requirement.
Best professor I've ever met! Most interested classes ever attened. Almost available 24/7 from discord channel. Love him so much!!
Walter is a very nice man. But he CANNOT teach. He does not give full answers or explanations during the class. If you go to his office hours he will basically tell you to "think about it" instead of giving straight up answers. No answers given for the homework and worksheets also. Overall, a terribly confusing class and I would not recommend.
I loved being in class, and Prof. Freeman is genuinely one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. However, things on quizzes would often not be covered in class, and although you could talk to him after class or over the discord, he never responded to my emails. I think he's a great dude and I learned a lot, but I definitely struggled gradewise
Heard such good reviews about this guy and I get why.. BUT personally I did not like this class at all. I found the material very hard, the lectures very boring, and quizzes difficult. My saving grace was that he knows this class is hard, and his grading scale allowed you to get 80s and still finish with an A. Overall not a super easy A tho
Prof Freeman is SUCH a nice guy but his class is very difficult for a 100 level. It's more about physics than astronomy and some of the topics are very hard to comprehend. Freeman sometimes doesn't always do the best job explaining things too. The upside though is that he curves heavily, so a 70 in his class equals out to a B, which is nice.
Absolute worst professor I've had. Does not answer emails, quizzes were absolute hell and we had one every week, no way of studying for them you just had to go with educated guesses, quiz guides were incredibly irrelevant and unhelpful, I could not recommend this class less. Taking it was the works decision I ever made and I've taken stats.
Absolute worst professor I've ever had. That's all I have to say.
Super awesome dude, really loves what he does. The class is difficult though, so don't expect to get by without doing work. Do your homework, go to labs, study for tests and you'll pass no problem.
Professor is super sweet and amazing. 10/10 professor but the class itself sucks. helets you retake stuff for extra points/ wants you to do well. class itself makes no sense to me but i somehow made an A- bc his grading scale is curved. just go to labs and do hw, but super hard class, you just do well bc he lets u make up bad grades and the curve
you won't pass the quizzes because they aren't related to the course material. if you want to pass make sure you go to the lab and do the papers. the grades are curved so more likely than not you're going to pass
One of the worst professors on this campus. So easily distracted by the twitch chat and talked about anything and everything not related to class. Didn't teach at all and the only reason I passed is from watching an excessive amount of youtube videos. He was unresponsive and rude the few times he did respond. Take this class at another school!!
He's a good person but his lectures are completely useless and he relies almost entirely on the TAs to teach while in recitation as you complete packets. Most of the TAs barely help, giving you different answers and different ways to solve the equations depending on who you ask. The homework will take 4+ hours even when working with others.
The lecture is designed to only 'introduce' the topics which consists of not going over the topics at all. The sections for this class do nothing but further confuse students, due to it relying on students teaching other students material that none of them have learned. If you have not taken a high level physics course in high school good luck.
I would be mad that he taught in a way that only makes sense to him, however, I am even madder that he barely teaches at all. At least if he taught enough maybe I would be able to understand his thinking, however, the amount of teaching he does is probably close to 10 minutes out of every 120-minute class.
Class is curved because so many would fail without it. Even so, it's difficult to get an A. He never fully solves problems in lecture, which is unhelpful. He claims the course is designed for people who have not taken physics in high school, but it's not. He wastes lecture time going over more advanced examples that you aren't tested on for fun
Doesn't teach you, only introduces the concepts (these are his words) and tells you to learn in recitation. No one in recitation knows what they are doing so it is near impossible to learn. Then he gets mad when you ask him to do an example because 'you have been doing this for almost 2 weeks you should know it'
Pt 1: Prof. Freeman makes this class unnecessarily complicated, focusing way too heavily on the concepts of physics, seemingly attempting to make what should be a simple and straightforward course inaccessible to anyone who has not previously taken a physics class. Also relies too heavily on TAs in recitation.
This professor is the worst one ive had a Syracuse. He doesn't talk to his students, doesn't make himself available and then will punish you for it. He is a grade A nerd, like I mean weirdest dude I've ever seen. Saw him walking with a walkman one time down marshall street. The fact that this man still has a job here is beyond me. Dude sucks
This man was awful. Terrible all around. Most of the 5 stars are probably given by himself. Avoid at all costs. Take ast with Watson. He is the best.
To actually learn anything you NEED to go to the Physics Clinic. The lectures are awful but the TAs are amazing and helpful. Walter is a good guy and he's very passionate but he's a bad lecturer.
Great class for non-science majors, grades really easy.
Walter is an amazing man, and extremely intelligent professor. He puts effort into his classes and wants everyone to learn physics, and not worry about grades. His lectures are more constructing ideas, and recitation is doing the problems. He puts aside a lot of time for students outside of class, and wants everyone to take advantage of that.
Professor Freeman cared more about his students understanding physics than their grades. However, his teaching style needs improvement. He would go off topic during lectures at times. Homeworks are difficult but doable with the help of others. Show up to recitation, ask questions, submit all homework, do alright on exams and you should pass.
Worst class I've ever taken. If you haven't taken a high level physics course/AP Physics, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! It is absolutely a nightmare if you do not already have a strong physics background. There's a lot of homework, and you can go to the physics clinic for help but it is almost always swamped.
He keeps banning me from his discord, it makes me mad.
Horrible. If you think this is an easy class it is not. He should not be a teacher at Syracuse.
Prof. Freeman is a pretty good person. His lectures can be a bit over the place due to his high energy, but that's honestly a breath of fresh air. Going to lectures and labs will provided you with almost all the material you need for this class and there is barley any homework. If you dislike energetic people I wouldn't recommend this class.
He's a very engaging lecturer, but AST 101 is genuinely one of the hardest classes I've ever taken and I'm a Junior. The grade scale makes up for this, since anything above an 88 is an A. There are 3 exams and a final though, so if test taking isn't your thing, I'd look elsewhere.
Walter is a really nice and caring Professor. I liked him very much, but AST 101 was probably the hardest class that I've taken so far - and I'm in Calculus as a non-math or science major. The exams (3) are very hard, and there is a final project on top of a final exam during finals week. I am very overwhelmed by all of these assignments at the end
I took this class because Google said it was the easiest class in the whole entire school. This is false. Freeman is a super smart guy, but I got lost five minutes into every lecture. The material is sooooo difficult for an intro class. Exams are super tough, but my grade was only rescued by the easy labs and papers.
I think this class is really easy actually if you study properly for the exams. The hardest part is actually the multiple choice surprisingly. The lectures are literally not necessary, didn't go for the last month and did the best grades wise in that time span. He goes off topic a lot, when I did go to lecture it was to do other work.
As a person he is great, he truly cares about his students. He gives multiple chances for a student to retake quizzes and make up work. Take advantage of that. His teaching method was not for me. I had to ask the TA's for help, they would have better explanations. Really put effort into the labs. I didn't really give this class my 100% and I passed
You would expect it to be easy to handle and understand. Well, sadly that is not the case. Clearly, Walter is not capable of teaching the number of students he has. The entirety of his students had absolutely zero idea of their overall grade until the semester was over because he has his own grading curve. Yeah.. bc no one understands the material.
AST 101 is a very hard class, especially for being the "non-stem major science class." So expect to put in effort. There's a large curve. Walter is good at what he does and is rather inspiring. The negative reviews are very harsh, but he isn't for everyone. I failed physics in HS but got an A in this course. He does his best to make student succeed
In AST 101 its overwhelming at first. Professor Freeman didn't really help but my TA was amazing. In order to do well in the class establish and seek help from your TA
Walter is very nice in the fact that he offers a huge curve for his class and a few extra credit opportunities. Though, the lectures felt like they dragged on for hours and were hard to follow especially if you are not a STEM person. His tests are all over the place and feel as though they don't go over what he taught.
Walter is a really nice guy for sure. He is clearly knowledgeable and is very clear while giving individual attention(rare). However in lectures he overcomplicates the concepts, and he says in the beginning of the course that he designs homework so you need help. I spend hours in physics clinic. If you want mental sanity I would not recommend.
The worst. That is it.
Very smart and caring guy but simply does not know how to teach an introductory level physics course.
Just terrible.
He grades very harshly and the exam average was in the 40's. He goes off topic. Unless you took AP Physics, it's easy to get lost. He spent so little time on the "most important topic" of the course and relies too much on the TA's. His lectures barely help and he vaguely explains the concepts and barely teaches us how to utilize these concepts.
Prof expects Ta's to actually teach content. Beaware, some of the tas/coaches don't know what they're doing and will give you wrong answers (happened multiple times, including the last day of recitation). He's a genuine guy, but he's very hard to meet for help, and we didn't even get questions to practice for the final except recitation material
Walter Freeman... where do I start? Lectures are basically just him laughing and talking about things that don't pertain to the class at all. Nothing he teaches in lecture has anything to do with the exams we take. He expects TAs to teach the class and they all give out different answers to questions so there is no set way to do any problem.
The worst part about him is that he's so infuriatingly nice and compassionate that it's hard to hate him. He truly wants everyone in the class to succeed and capture his passion, but he's not helpful. The smart people will get high scores, and the rest won't get it. He is not a factor in the grade distribution, no matter how hard he tries to be.
He is really a great teacher, willing to help students, and I can assert he is the best teacher I have ever met. He is energetic and enthusiastic and wants to make everyone understand and love physics. He adds some interesting topics to the boring assignments and labs in lecture. My grades sucked but I couldn't hate him, he is a good professor.
Learning takes place during homework. This is not directly a bad thing, however, you will never know with 100% certainty whether your thinking is correct until test day. My homeworks were all returned to me a week before the FINAL, and answer keys were never published. Do homework with at least 3 friends to minimize chance of misunderstanding.
I'm about to graduate with a 3.5 GPA in EE, and this is the lowest grade I've ever received. This class will overwhelm you, not help you succeed, and teach you nothing. Walter is a brutal grader, awful at explaining, expects TAs to teach, smug, and thinks he is without fault. Surprised he hasn't been fired yet. One of the worst profs I've ever had.
Walter's a nice guy and I'm sure he's fine outside of teaching, but as a professor he's terrible. His lectures are hard to follow, the homework he gives are unnecessarily difficult, and the recitations (where he expects you to learn) are an absolute joke. If you never learned physics before, you have a long painful road ahead of you.
You don't learn anything in the lectures and he expects you to go recitation to learn the actual material.
Good Luck... As every lecture passes you dig yourself deeper and deeper into a hole of frustration, confusion, and depression. All you can do is hope that the curve helps you out in the end.
Walter teaching this class is comparable to teaching your 100yr old grandma how to send an e-mail.
He got nice hair. I respect Walter for that. He has an awful hairline but that does not stop him. No sireee. He maintains a beautiful lions mane.
Terrible professor no matter how hard I tried to like him. He was a wonderful person who was passionate about many things, but his teaching style was absolutely awful. Disorganized, irrelevant lecture materials and difficult recitation packages that we were not prepared for whatsoever. It was hard to find resources that would actually help.Badexams
A disorganized and messy professor. He never finished all the slides every class and often went off-topic. He refused to post grades on Blackboard until near the end of the term, always posted homework late, and often made mistakes doing problems in class. He's rather unprofessional and the only way to reliably reach him is thorough Discord.
Cannot image he got those 1-star ratings, he definitely worth a whole five stars. He is the BEST and most interesting professor I ever had, he organized class well, always have some visual illustrations in class. I like to chat with him every office hours. He made me love astronomy! Exams is truest a bit hard but if you study well, at least B.
He's really passionate but the class is pretty boring, so much work just to fill a science requirement, exams are difficult but grades get curved by a lot of other things and grading policy is really generous so it ends up being pretty reasonable to get an A, attendance not required but would definitely recommend going if you want to do well.
Walter's a cool dude. But def is a lot for a 101 class. Claims you dont have to be STEM-oriented to understand this course but that's kind of a fib. But you can still get a good grade if you do well on the weekly online quizzes and attend lab because there are so many of them. bombed the exams but doing ok in the class. Don't understand a thing tho
He makes AST 101 seem like a 300/400 level class. The tests are crazy hard for no reason. He lets you use a cheat sheet but nothing on the study ends up on the test, so it doesn't matter anyways. There's no extra credit available either. The only thing that makes this class okay is the fact that attendance isn't taken.
You can tell that he is passionate about what he teachers and at the begging of the year he says that he made the course for non science people but the tests are legit impossible. If it weren't for the insane curve I would failed which sucks cause I went to all of the office hours and sought extra tutoring for this class.
AST 101 isn't as easy as it sounds. Walter is a really go ecod teacher who has hard exams. The grading scale make it easy to get a fine grade without doing great on exams. Good dude who teaches a tougher 100 level class. Have a little bit of interest in math in science to take the course.
The worst college experience I have ever had. This is a 101 level astronomy course that most take for a science/lab science. He treats it like AP Physics. Tests and material barely correspond with one another, and the questions on the tests are so poorly worded. DO NOT take this class.
Walter is truly a great person. If you have any questions he is always available and did whatever he could to help his students. With that said, there is way too much emphasis on tests. The only thing that kept the class grade up was labs and quizzes. The lectures are too detailed and the class average for tests was about 60. HARD FOR INTRO CLASS
I thought this class was going to be easy and I failed just about every exam in this class after studying for 6+ hours for them. This class made me want to cry, please do not take it!!!!
I took PHY 211 with Walter and had an alright experience. PHY 307 was an amazing experience. Takes all the knowledge you learn in PHY 211 and teaches you how to make a computer do it with visualization. Completely project-based, and great programming practice for C/C++. Also counts for an Arts & Science GE Credit. 10/10.
Terrible professor. Nothing on his exams is what we learned in lecture. Took AST 101 and your grade is entirely based off of lab and only 3 exams. Exams are extremely long and ask for very specific information. Would not recommend at all.
Walter tries to make his lectures interesting which I appreciate. The tests are impossible for me-- I would have failed the class if it weren't for the generous curve given. The class was very confusing and uninteresting for me. I am not a STEM major so I struggle in these classes. Majority of people struggled, some passed with ease.
Lectures are not very useful.
I've never had another professor more invested in their student's success. My class was given access to free tutoring sessions (although this was part of a senior's capstone project, I don't know if it will continue). Lectures were helpful but recitations were lifesaving.
He doesn't really explain physics concepts well. Poor time management in lectures. He does preform really cool in class physics demos though. His lectures are just reading off slides for the most part. However, you can tell he is really energetic and knowledgeable in physics, he just doesn't covey the material in an efficient way in lectures.
walter is great and made class interesting. i suggest you dont skip bc there is a new, tough topic everyday, although it is possible bc attendance is not taken. if u take with a lab, there is weekly prelabs and the labs are pretty hard but doable. test heavy and i failed them all but the labs are designed for you to pass them easy. hard but doable
Quite an odd guy but truly loves what he does and teache - and will give the resources necessary to pass the class. Lectures are almost useless as youre given maybe one or two pieces of useful information but youre not taught anything especially how to solve problems. He talks and moves along that subject matters very quickly.
Walter is a very passionate professor when it comes to physics. Lectures were often not as useful as they could be but were still interesting. There is a lot of homework which takes lots of time but helpful when learning a topic. He is always willing to help and tests are more than fair. If you don't do well in the course 9/10 times it is not him.
In the curve we trust. Honestly, what you get in this class depends on you & your TA. Walter expects you to learn during recitation. If you get stuck with a bad TA, go to the physics clinic and you'll be fine
This was a terrible professor. The entire semester had lectures that were not useful. The day before exam 4 he updated the class grades. Many students were left only one day to prepare for exam 4. *Context: 3/4 exams are required for this course (the lowest exam is dropped, and if you are happy with the grade you have, it is not necessary to take.)
This class was terribly organized. The lectures were all over the place and forced me to use outside online sources to learn the material for almost every unit. Additionally, he changed our grades the day before the final exam, and many students that wouldn't have to take the optional final now would have to with little to no preparation.
WALTER FREEMAN IS THE GREATEST PROFESSOR EVER UNDISPUTED GOAT WHEN I COME TO HIS LECTURE I DO NOT SLEEP NO I DO NOT PLAY CLASH OF CLANS NO I LISTEN AND LOOK AT HIS GORGEOUS HAIR AND AM LIKE WHAT IS PHYSICS RAHHHHH
Walter is a great professor, but because most of the actual learning happens in recitation, your experience in the class depends on which TA you get assigned to. I was able to switch sections, but I don't know how common that is. Go to the physics clinic often, especially if you're stuck with a TA that you're not effectively learning from.
walter cannot teach for the life of him, lectures are so boring and most of the time he just wastes time, if someone asks for homework question help he doesn't really answer the question rather just goes over the broad idea which doesn't help, his examples and participations during classes are fun though, but would not take again.
Walter is a math whiz! Make sure your trig, factoring and pythagrorean theorem are exceptional. He truly loves science as an open forum to discuss ideals. 211 relies heavily on TA's in recitation. Go to every recitation, participation is a HUGE grade booster in the end. Go to study groups, use all the TA"s. I have never worked so hard in a class.
Chemistry major here taking physics with Walter, this class is very heavy on the textbook and recitation. Lectures are yes great for understanding the basics of physics, but does the bare minimum for examples in class, and for recitation you're forced to work in a group on practice problems with the work from TAs which is no help. Waste of time!!
Professor Freeman makes his exams beyond difficult, his recitation packets are a nightmare, as they most times contain content that has not yet been taught. Homework is the only reason I have the grade I do as well as just showing up to recitation. Class is overall awful due to having a lecturer who teaches completely differently to Freeman.
Pt 2: TA's are beyond incompetent and cannot do their jobs for the life of them, TA during recitation stands and stares at you blankly waiting for a response which is never given. Nice guy and loves what he does, but his exams are downright awful. If you go to ESF, highly recommend waiting until it is offered there, absolute joke of a class.
Professor Freeman rules. So nice, accessible, and clearly very passionate. I would take his AST 101 course over again in a heart beat. Everyone complaining didn't care enough to do the work, or they didn't take him up on the many different avenues he offered for getting help.
Worst class I have ever taken. We don't get taught any of the tested material in lecture. We go through huge amounts of material without actually ever learning HOW to solve problems. TAs also don't know what they're doing. I ask a question and they just ask me another question in response. Half the time they dont even know how to solve the problem.
The class relies heavily on recitation, so make sure to get a good TA. Use the physics clinic and Unstuck study for extra help. Lectures can be hit-or-miss, but the curve saves the day. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
Walter does care a lot about his students but the way the class is taught is very confsuing. We had to retake multiple exams since the whole class did poorly, which is teh fagult of the instructors. He is very accomodating though, and if you come in with a background of physics and stay on top of the weekly assignments you should be okay.
If youve never taken phy, youll see how unnecessary hard this prof made exams. His exam questions would be two paragraphs long and youd have to decipher what the question is even asking before you do the problem. He does unnecessary stuff in lecture and doesnt teach well. Choose a good group for his group exams because that makes your grade.
Creates incredibly confusing exam questions (which usually are wrong/missing something that he edits half way into the exam), as well as lengthy homework assignments. TA's are clueless but as long as you show up you'll be okay. Curve saved everyone!!! be prepared to do a lot of work outside of class.
took his class twice, failed then withdrew. if you miss one lecture you are cooked. we go through so much material without actually learning. recitations are war. TA's answer questions w questions. tests are everything. test questions are puzzling and always have mistakes. homework is so hard. he cares about his job but he just doesn't work for me.
Genuinely don't understand negative reviews or reputation. Walter clearly cared about a subject that many students – frankly – found boring, and it was a very interesting class. If you try to actually learn the topics, it is pretty straightforward and not difficult to do well. Highly recommend.
Accessible outside class but overall a very bad prof. His lectures barely cover any useful material, homework is very long, TA's are very bad at explaining things. He makes the class much harder than it's supposed to be, I've barely learned anything during lecture and often have to understand things outside of class/during recitation.
You won't learn much in lecture. The professor says to focus on understanding physics, not memorizing equations—do the opposite! To succeed, memorize equations and get a basic grasp of solving problems. This approach is key to passing with a high grade. Don't expect us to 'understand' if you grade us on equations. good luck you're gonna need it.
idk how much longer I can last Walter please stop leaving the recitation TA's to be our teacher
I took this class four years ago (graduated since) and this is still the worst class I've ever taken. Walter is a passionate, terrible prof. Relies too heavily on the TA's, who don't receive guidance from Walter. Assignments are impossibly difficult. I guess this class is STILL rough. Good luck folks, waltuh is the worst prof I have EVER had.
You won't learn in lectures don't even bother attending. Most of your learning will be from the homework. The recitation TAs are very bad at teaching, they also don't even try to help you out, they'll watch you stare at a problem for 30 minutes and not reach out. I highly advise you to take this class with a different professor!
this class is so overcomplicated by the professor you barely learn anything. extremely homework heavy and all the homework is extremely long and tedious. His exams are so much harder than the content we review in class and often half the things he says will be on the exam don't even end up being on the exam. overall worst prof I had in this school.
Worst Professor I've ever had and it's unfortunately not even close. Tests are different than stated and all the preparatory material given not helpful half the time. The grading scale is the only reason that many people manage to get decent grades, as the exam averages are usually horrendous.
Very good professor. I love when he reads my Discord DMs to the whole class. He's charming, easygoing, and always helpful—willing to meet one-on-one outside of class. Ignore the haters; they're just not motivated to learn physics. He makes my life better, and I'll always cherish his class. Truly an inspiration for generations to come.
Walter is the worst teacher i've ever had. there is no textbook so the only resource available are his awful lecture slides. the homework problems and practice problems given before tests are nothing like what are on the actual test, and he doesn't cover what is on the test. the easiest way to learn the material in this course is to teach yourself
Walter is a good person, but a poor teacher. Lectures don't help, TAs ignore you, and the exams are nothing like class or homework. Questions are overly long and confusing—no one needs a dog's backstory to solve a physics problem. Take this class in the fall with a different professor.
This might've.. no is the worst professor I have ever had. but can not teach. If you really want to learn then you have to pray. This is supposed to be an intro level course but he teaches as if you have been knowing this for years. He has good practice problems but they nothing like. His exams ARE WORST THAN THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND NOTHING ALIKE.
Really nice guy, obviously loves what he does, but an awful professor. He's super goofy and playful with the class but he moves too quick and relies heavily on the TAs/recitation. Lectures are more like a brief overview followed by example problems but he doesn't teach HOW to do it. Exams are also 1000x harder than the practice and homework
Walter is a funny guy that clearly likes what he does but forgets that we don't know physics yet and goes way too fast in lectures, relying heavily on TA's in recitation that give conflicting information and don't help at all. Tests are 10000x harder than what he prepares you for and studying will help, but not a lot.
this class requires so much prior knowledge its kind of insane, tests are so SO hard. hes a cutie pie but if you need science credit ast 101 is not the way to go
This guy spends more time "uwu"ifying his questions than actually giving us comprehensible questions. Ain't nobody need to know the backstory of your pets pal, just test us. You may be wondering why I chose "hilarious" as a tag... Its because he is "hilarious"ly unfunny and you will only be laughing at him. He cannot teach. I'm so very tired. Help.
Professor Freeman is not nearly as bad as most of these reviews say. He gave very entertaining lectures, was funny, and genuinely cared about his students. That said for a 100 level this class was difficult and mainly graded off difficult tests but he did allow you to bring a cheat sheet. If you don't mind studying a little extra, I recommend.
Just doesn't get his points across lectures could be set up better.
walter is nice and caring. he makes himself available outside of class. however, his class is not manageable for anyone who has not taken physics beforehand. the exams are much harder than the homeworks and recitation material. it really comes down to your recitation ta and group if you want to succeed in this class.
His lecture style does not allow for the student to learn the material truly. I only did well because I spent so many hours outside of class learning the material alone. Also, the TA you get truly will make or brake the class. Mine was a super-easy grader and was super chill, but I had a friend whose TA was super tough and strict.
It doesn't matter if you've taken an AP or IB course for Physics 1, because chances are you'd get the same grade anyway. His methods of teaching are so subpar for a required course for engineers. His tests are riddles that rely on luck and assumptions since he words them so poorly; and there is almost no partial credit given at all. Good luck.
No. Just no. Heed my warning and please just try your best to pick another professor. The lectures are organized poorly and are usually just rants he goes on forever and ever. The homework is looonnnggg and considerably tougher than anything you'll ever see on his lousy lecture slides. EXAMS ARE HARD and he prides himself for making them impossible
If you want to do good and are attending lectures and recitations go to office hours and/or the physics clinic once you get stuck. Make sure to ask any questions once you're stuck. He's really nice to students. His course requires a lot of critical thinking!
Prof. Freeman is very hands on when teaching. I love it when he makes me demonstrate in awkward positions in front of people. I'm always feeling hot and sweaty in the classroom, but maybe that's just because the heating is always on. It's really not hard to get an A in the class, you just have to spend time in his office hours and text on discord.
Listen. I did well - but that's cause I put in effort in my recitations and didn't chatGPT the homework. But Walter himself is a mediocre teacher at best. He cannot really explain physics in a way many students new to the subject can understand. Tests are not like the practice - kinda unfair - but if you prep, you've got it. Wouldn't recommend him.
Extremely easy, but Walter is a very polarizing and eccentric teacher. He's a good guy who genuinely cares, but if this is your first introduction to physics, you're going to need to spend a lot of time outside of class in order to understand material. That being said, if you took any basic physics in high school you'll be fine.
He's a kind and sweet person who really cares about students. He gives points back if you meet with him and explains things outside of class. That said, his teaching is unclear and exam averages are very low. He offers retakes, and Sidney explains(her yt chancel) often re-explains his material much better. Great guy, but not a strong teacher.
Last spring I had Walter and thought he was bad until I took physics II with steven blusk (hes the devil), and walter is an actual saint. Physics is tough, and I had a hard time grasping the material but walter made it so that if you particapated, were active and tried your best your grade would reflect that.
The intent for student is there, however the lecture style does not work for people already struggling. In-class examples are not great for understanding concepts. Recitation is helpful, but only for recitation problems.
AST 101 is difficult for a 101 class. Midterm class average would be around 50% but you can earn half credit back with the exam retakes. Walter is a nice professor but I would leave his lectures with a new anecdote or fun fact from him, and just about 10% of the actual lesson. Doing well on the labs go a long way, make sure to not skip them!
Walter freeman is far and beyond the most enthusiastic, engaging professor in the physics department. What he seldom lacks in his ability to actually convey information that will be graded (HEAVY on the word seldom) he makes up for in strides with his genuine, unmatched joy for what he teaches. If you still struggle and blame him, its a skill issue
Very passionate, will go off on random tangents that seem unimportant but are on exams
Walter is a lovely man who just wants to share his passions with the world. However, I do not share his passions and he does not curve tests. He really did his best to engage students and make astronomy interesting, he did not succeed, but he really tried.
Walter is very passionate and knowledgeable about the course but sometimes he would go on tangents that don't relate to the topic, but he is an all around great guy. The lectures can sometimes be pretty boring but he is very engaging.
You can tell how much he cares about his students, and he's clearly very passionate about what he teaches. Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do to make me like this subject, but he definitely made it a little easier.
This class was very difficult, but Walter really tried his best. He was super accessible outside of class, always extending and changing office hours for students. Interactive lectures with handouts and demonstrations a lot, but the class is just so hard!! Allows test corrections, but doesn't curve tests even when many students failed everytime.
He cares about students, which is rare nowadays. He makes the universe less mysterious and more engaging, if such a thing is possible. To pass, you'll need real curiosity about space and our origins, the kind you can't fake. Space is hard. This class is hard. So it goes. But Freeman's passionate about it all, and that helps.
