He was a very nice teacher, and the class was very simple and fun. His was the only class I enjoyed during the semester.
Hines is a great teacher who is enthusiastic about his field. He knows his stuff and is quite the character. I enjoyed having him as my teacher.
Talks way too much. you could probably get more done at home than you can in his class.
GOOD man BAD teacher. Completely inept at teaching. His course was a waste of my time and money. He does NOT know HOW to instruct and run a classroom! He may have a good resume but not in education!IRSC needs a professor who can do both understand design and present and direct instruction with leadership and skill.
The most awesome teacher anyone could ever ask for. if you do not know anything, no problem, mr. hines WANTS to help you learn. super enthusiastic and knows how to make class fun. i would recommend to anyone!!!
Mr. Hines is very knowledgeable and passionate about his field and wants everyone else to get just as excited about it. He uses the learn by doing approach. He is very helpful and will make sure you get good projects out of the class for your portfolio. He knows exactly what colleges and companies are looking for. He is an expert in his field.
Walt is one of the best professors at this school. He deff knows what hes talking about and pushes you so only te best comes out.
The only thing I liked about Hines is when he showed us how horrible the income is for graphic designers. Aside from that he just bolstered student egos by telling them that their work was good. In actuality, most of the work was horrible to mediocre at best. I feel sorry for the students when they have to enter the real world. Class is too easy.
Mr. Hines was amazing. For anyone who actually knows about design, the class is great. All the people saying he doesn't know what he's talking couldn't be serious about the field. The amount of jobs offered to him from all over the place is staggering. And about the money in this field. He told us he made over $200,000 on a single project.
He likes to talk, and talk, and talk for ages. I honestly felt like I did more work OUTSIDE of class. I caught the flu around the end of the class and got more work done in bed than I did in the first 5 weeks of class. Hes a good guy, but not a good teacher, I don't think I learned anything from his class.his classes are no challenge whatsoever.
He may have lots of prior experience, but he is a horrible teacher. He definitely likes to talk, but he also has a temper and quick attitude, so stay on his good side! When he is mad, you'll know. But he does help you when you need it with your projects and does have experience in the field.
Wow very talented designer. He will keep you busy with plenty of projects which is great because that is the only way your going to learn the software and be a great designer. My only issue is that he has a problem with staying focused and remembering what he taught to which class. I would, however, recommend him over Mr. Mason.
Decent guy but often off topic. Good projects. FYI, the Intro to Digital Media class isn't much different from the first Photoshop class.
Hines is very "on point" when it comes to teaching what needs to be taught. A good habit he has is pausing on each step, making sure everyone is on track, and on the same page. The bad side to him is that he tends to ramble alot when he's supposed to be teaching.... Sometimes I didn't mind the rambling though.
Hines is the person that inspired me to be a Graphic Designer.....I love him
Mr. Hines is under the impression that regularly dropping the names of prominent print media designers, 1990's typography, and raiding the web for (copyrighted) images is all there is to know. He is very limited in his ability and knowledge. I watched him struggle with scaling, masking, the pen tool, live trace, photomerge, and keyframes. Sad.
I loved Mr Hines class! He is a teacher that cares about his students. He is an amazing award winning designer that is well respected in his field. He has helped many struggling students obtain scholarships, computers, and the design software they need to become successful. He is truly an amazing person. Take his class and you will see....
This guy hasn't got a clue. Don't bother - do a tutorial online, you'll learn more.
Hines cares very much for all of his students. Yes, he talks a little more than the average instructor, however, would you rather that he not talk much and not explain enough? He does it because he cares and wants us all to grasp his class. Hines is the only instructor that goes out of his way to help his students even with classes that are not his
Concerned more about his and past student work than he is about improving your understanding of design and portfolio work. Not to mention constantly talking about topics unrelated to the focus at hand which is art and design. If you ask for help, expect trial by fire. Best to look for another teacher, if they had another choice. Very disappointed.
He brought pizza almost every night for class. I freaking loved his class!! Easy, you work at your own pace. Granted you will have to teach yourself some of the stuff because he doesn't really teach. But overall he's really laid back. I DEFINITELY Recommend :-)
This will be your teacher for every design class. Yes...he can be quite outspoken. No one is safe. He is a great guy. No mater what you can say about his methods...I don't think anyone cares more. :)
If you don't like being told what to do, or can't handle criticism then don't take this class! Very straight-forward and wants to see you succeed in his class. Stay on his good side and do as he says because when the time comes, this man has your future in his hands. Taught the class very well although talks quite a bit. Great class and portfolio!
Good teacher, does tend to go off on tangents, but offers good feedback on your work and grades well.
Rude, demeans you by blaring out humiliating remarks so the whole class can hear and giggle. For instance, "Move over, you're too slow. I cant't take this. What did you do? Oh God. Ohhh. I can't work like this!? What did you do!" He doesn't know keyboard short cuts to InDesign and Photoshop. He takes any opportunity to make you feel inept & unaware
He LOVES to tease and joke. He will pick on everyone and then say "THIS IS MY FAVORITE CLASS!!!" he use to buy us pizza but the school got upset so no more pizza... but he's really nice and teaches well. He could be taken offensively if your not use to being teased a bit. He never means it though.
Professor Hines is a great deal of help when it comes to organizing and laying out your portfolio with your best projects first. You definitely need to show up to his class. ESPECIALLY if you need help with how you want your portfolio to look but don't know where to start. Take Hines for this course if you want to impress potential employers!
In the Branding And Corporate Identity course, I was able to go in-depth with Logo and Corporate Design and was able to create some logos for local small businesses. It was a really great experience talking face to face with clients and in the end some of these projects became main portfolio pieces and reinforced an area that I needed help with!
This class was identical to the other four classes I took with Mr. Hines. We learned more about the Big Ten Logo he designed in the early 90s, and what a great designer he is, than anything having to do with Photoshop, or any other subject. If you really want to be a graphic designer, try to get other teachers if you can. Very disappointing.
Mr. Hines is the best professor ever, he will be weekends for you, his big interest is the student success.
Wouldn't take again
Professor likes to talk about his past and be little the students. Any decision you make on your own is wrong and you aren't allowed to defend it. He also struggles with the design software and gets upset if students try to help him and immediately insults them to defend himself. This professor needs to relax and realize it's not about him.
I have to take more classes with this guy. He spends all his time talking about himself . When he's not talking about himself, he's talking smack about the college. He does bust his butt to handle the portfolio event and the student exhibition, unfortunately he does it for recognition rather than for the students. Feed his ego and collect your A.
Doesn't really teach as much as he just rants about how none of us knows anything and endlessly talks about past students and how much better they were than us. He's passionate about the subject & student success but not that good of a teacher. Most of the semester we just focused on one logo design. Easy enough class to pass.
Great professor, He cares about the quality of work being produced in the class. The portfolio shows really shows how much he care for the work he and his students do.
Prof. Hines is hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. He creates an environment that allows creative freedom to sculpt your own unique style to the best of your abilities, while still using his vast knowledge of art and design to constructively improve your work.
He is extremely helpful in all aspects. Kind teacher, helps prepare you for the job force, which includes working individually with each student helping them preparing their portfolio for a perfect presentation. And helps you find a job when you are ready. He is there from beginning to end in a students journey.
Professor Hines is an outstanding educator. He encourages students to think outside of their usual scope of thinking and gives broad freedom for us to create meaningful pieces. If you need guidance and help, he is more than willing to spend his time, during class and after, to help, whether it is to learn software or to explore more creative ideas.
He is very committed to his students success and will spend an enormous amount of time outside of class to make sure students are prepared to obtain jobs after graduation. He is a great help in organizing your portfolio & often teaches about what to expect from potential employers. Jokes around and teases a lot, but it's all in fun.
Definitely the best teacher I've ever had. Truly a teacher who takes a real interest in the success of his students. Professor Hines has helped me even if it meant staying after class. He has also done so without making me feel stupid for asking questions. I would definitely recommend any of his classes.
Professor Hines displays a deep understanding of the graphic design field through years of experience. He values tried-and-true methods, but is always urging students to push the boundaries a little bit to stand out from the rest. Do your research, experiment, and show that you care about what you do, and he'll take time to see that you do it well.
Mr. Hines is a great teacher. If you show up and do the work you will get an A. He is always willings to help or stay late. He is always trying to get our stuff in the shows.
Mr. Hines is an easy teacher, who helps whenever you need it. Always willing to stay late and help finish projects. He try's to get every project into the show. If you show up and do your work you'll get an A.
Mr. Hines is a great teacher. If you come in and do your work and have a interest in learning from someone that has been in the business for a long time then he's your guy. He works to get great projects from everybody and try's to get them in the shows the schools has. Would take again
Works hard on making sure that we have projects for our portfolios. Helped me to complete mine for portfolio show. Always try to get peoples projects into the show. Come in and work on projects and you'll do great in his class. He always try to get people jobs or help's them come to class, if they need a ride.
Great teacher
Strong Commitment to helping beyond the classroom on giving students design feedback and proactive in submitting art pieces of students to try to help them get awards. Walt provides invaluable feedback to building up your design portfolio to suit the competitive design market.
Always makes time for any student, in or out of office/class hours. Truly wants to see you do your best with your skills. Funny stories and invaluable advice, take notes! Also fun to debate design styles with him! Can't tell you how many times Futura saved my designs jobs though, he wins that one hands down lol. Anything can be fixed with Type.
Cares about students. Intro Class is an easy A. Hilarious character. Gets people jobs.
helps students, surprise presentations. not for the shy kids.
Easy Class. Hilarious sense of humor. Don't take his joking too seriously. Not for the shy and uptight. Fun class. Lots of pizza feasts.
He's an amazing teacher. He makes sure all of your work is top notch and will help you if you're struggling. It's fairly easy but most of the difficulty is in coming up with ideas. I can't wait to be in his future classes.
Mr. Hines is an inspirational guy who truly cares about his students. If you are going into any major that is Digital Media/Graphic Design related, then he is willing to go out of his way to help you get a job doing what you love. I highly recommend choosing Mr. Hines to be your professor. Also, depending on what class you're in, you may get food
Talks a lot about the field, gives good, specific criticism, and cares about your success. Quality bants, up-to-date techniques for how to use Photoshop to create posters and such, cool projects
He's laid-back and gives everyone good advice. As long as you show that you care, you will pass the class. He also offers projects outside of class to work on. He does sort of pick on students sometimes, but it's in a harmless sort of way, so if you're really sensitive to that sort of thing, you might not like it, but other than that, great class.
In Walt's class, it's not about the grades - it's about the skills. He wants to MAKE SURE that his students develop skills they can use to get good jobs and create superb photos and cover images. He MIGHT make fun of you, but at the same time he will be fair to you and brag about your work to the class. He's a dedicated teacher and a funny guy.
He really cares about his students as individuals, and will tease/ compliment everyone. Before this class I really wasn't vocal in any of my courses and Mr. Hines helped me break out of my shell. Loved this class and I can't wait to take more with him. He is also hilarious.
Walt Hines is an outstanding professor who's intellectual skill on graphic design is a sight to be hold. He dedicates his time to improve students on their creative designs on posters, spread sheets, mock-ups and so on. He tends to joke around with students which shows his sense of humor as a charming touch throughout the semester. 10/10
Best Teacher in the digital media department. He really cares about his students and shows that through his relentless effort to make sure they are where they need to be to get a jobs after school. Only teacher I've seen here that really puts the application behind the teaching. Great designer and really knows what hes talking about
Mr Hines is the best teacher in the Digital Media Dept. No other teacher has shown more passion & dedication in preparing students get a job in the field. Very accessible outside class & very knowledgeable in Graphic Design. He gives projects that are portfolio-worthy. Helps students get a job before they graduate. He deeply cares for his students
BEST PROFESSOR IN THIS COLLEGE! I HAVE LEARNED EVERYTHING FROM HIM! I cant thank him enough for teaching me everything I know. He truly cares for his students and goes out of his way to help us. He practically lives in IRSC! He has been the most influential person in my life. I hope he stays with us for a long time! You will have fun and learn alot
Mr Hines is probably the most experienced & knowledgeable in graphic design in the whole dept. His teaching method is non-traditional. He doesnt care much about attendance, he cares about making sure students have skills that get jobs. Always available when you need him. He helps students succeed above & beyond his job description.
There's no other teacher in IRSC that will help you build your portfolio & help you get a job. I learned so much from him, on class & out. gives practical projects & shares his knowledge & experiences in the field. Cares deeply about students & gives good feedback that helps improve skills. Has a strange sense of humor but otherwise a good teacher
He cares about his students. He cares about our success. He gives individual feedback. Goes out of his way to find jobs for student. Always willing to help and explain.
He helped me enhance my portfolio drastically. Very good about helping you find a job in the Graphic Design Industry after you graduate. He also has lots of Graphic Designers come into the classrooms and student shows, so we get great feedback from lots of professionals.
Holding your hand and babysitting you along the way is not his thing, but helping with each project, being available whenever needed, giving a great feedback and sharing his extended knowledge - definitely is.
He has a great knowledge about industry and the expectations of the future employers. Provides list of interesting books and websites, that are helpful to students, shares ups/downs of his career ( so we can avoid his mistakes) Peculiar sense of humor, but manageable ;) I would definitely take his class again
Typography is his "thing" - he knows a lot about it and is very eager to share; Interesting projects , worth showing during portfolio;
He really cares about his students - helps with preparation for the portfolio show; resume and everything in between; if you need an extra help- he is always available goes way and beyond for his students
He expects a lot of independent work, prepares students for a "real world" (don't expect too much of babysitting, but when you ask - he will be more than happy to step in and help)
Walt will sacrifice his own time, energy, and resources in an effort for the success of his students. He will work late into the night looking after a students progress, then work from early morning until late at night. He looks after each and every student as if that were the only student. He provides real world opportunities for all students.
Professor Hines takes care of his students both inside and outside class. He gives encouragement and knows how to give projects that prepares students for the best advantage in the job market. Mr. Hines really knows the field of Communication Design and tries hard to get his students great jobs during school and after graduation.
This is my second class with him and it has been a blast. During the last school year when needed he allowed me to use his office as a lab for my DIG1115 class and my GRA1151 class right now. He makes sure that his students are take care for and helps them find work in the future. He tells you information straight forward and never sugar coats.
My sister and I have both taken many classes with Professor Hines and we both agree that he is a hardworking professor who is dedicated to his students and his work. If a student is struggling, he will take the time to work with them. He is always looking for ways to get his students good projects that will give them a better portfolio to get a job
One of the best teachers wish he taught everything. Hope to have him in the future is classes are a lot of fun. If you show up and show him your trying he will pass you. No test just projects that make you think.
Hines is a great teacher for portfolio, if you're interested in Graphic Design that is. If you're a student in the Animation part of the AS/BAS degree, he does not really care for the work you do, unless it is graphic design oriented. With that being said, he really does care about his students and takes time to work with each student independantly
I've had many classes with him so I can confidently say he is very involved with his students work, and tries to make sure everyone puts out the best projects they can. He also has a sense of humor and likes to keep things lighthearted which makes it easier to relax and be more productive.
Walt really helped me to learn more by interacting with me and giving me good feedback on my work. If you don't know how to do something, he's more than willing to help.
Has always been very motivational and offers great critics of my work. He is able to provide me with positive feedback on my projects while challenging me to improve me work. Professor Hines goes out of his way to make sure that any of his students will succeed, and that's a rare level of commitment for any professor.
Thank you for being so patient with me and for helping me in the most difficult times with my projects, and for giving me the courage to be up to the most complex projects you have given us. You are an excellent teacher that many students would like to have. You taught me to surpass myself, to believe in myself and never to give up. Thank you.
He's a great professor. He really gets involved with his students and helps them out.
Walt is a great professor who gives you REAL LIFE WORK. He goes out and finds projects and brings them back to the students. This gives you a taste of the real world, real critic and real deadlines. He is the professor you want to take and will guide you every step of the way.
If you are able to take ANY of Walt's classes, do it. He gives you work out from the real world. He is constantly helping students in all areas to make sure they are ready for a real job. Walt helped me through out my Bachelors's Degree and I have never been so thankful for all the help he has given me.
10/10 teacher. great man. quality of life raised after having him as a teacher. buys us pizza and donuts sometimes.
Professor Hines is the best teacher that Ive ever had at any level of my education. He goes above and beyond to make sure that his students are successful. He recognizes the importance of having a great portfolio and gives you projects (with no specific deadlines) that will help you get a job. My life has been impacted greatly because of his help.
