A+ and prior exams are the only things that helped me pass this class! Honestly, I was just happy to pass the class no matter what grade I received! This is definitely a weeding out course! And Labs drag on FOREVER!!!
Just reads off the power points. Test are not too hard if you go to A+.
Always welcome to questions and you'll always hear interesting stories in class... just make you you read the book.
Kemp spends most of the time in lecture telling stories that have nothing to do with the material and then breezes through the powerpoints without much explanation for the material. He made it clear in class that you don't have to attend and your success in the class doesn't really matter to him. You will do fine if you study a lot.
Never went to lecture, easy tests if you read book, power points, and his notes that are all online. Lab is tough though. Kemp offended me in the first few weeks from some religious joke so I never went, but still made an A
recycles same tests, not hard.
Walter Kemp was a great professor. If you read and go to class, this class shouldn't be a problem. However, if it is split with Lints, which happened during my semester, I wouldn't recommend. I couldn't stand Professor Lints... she was extremely dry and boring!
Pretty much, I only attended lectures to make myself feel better. Kemp tells stories the entire class period. You could pass the class without actually attending the lectures as long as you read over the power points that he posts.
GET A TEST BANK! Attendance is a joke, most people don't go to class and still pass. He tells stories and his powerpoints are all online. For the final, all I did was study the test bank and I got 100%. If you want to learn then read the book, if you just want to pass then study the test bank and you'll be fine.
He is a great person but not a good professor. I never went to class because I realized he's just reading the PP slides that he puts online anyway. If you're not a science major, just use a test bank.
Kemp was an awful teacher - taught directly from book generated powerpoints and notes. GET THE STUDY GUIDE! It is a "secret" deal and hard to get, so make friends fast and get one. I couldn't get it until the third test, and failed the first two even though I read the chapters, did EOC questions, study guide, etc.
Horrible professor. Bio is an important building block class and he doesn't even attempt to teach, just uses a test bank. I Q-Dropped his class because despite the fact I had the book memorized and did well in lab, his generated tests had nothing to do with the book required for the course. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I took him, and at first, I really liked him. He's really easy going, and tells a lot of stories. But the more the semester progressed, the more I realized that he DIDN'T teach us ANYTHING. He uses the manufacturer's power points and doesn't go in depth. I Q dropped because he was so unhelpful. DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM.
Kemp uses a test bank which is spread throughout his students, so just ask until you find it. Kemp is one of my favorite teachers. Went to class to hear his stories from his research. B is possible with test bank. A is possible with reading and A+ tutor. Lectures online, questions from the book, & SI is helpful. Lab is hard and 20% of the grade.
I went to class the first week and it wasn't helpful at all. Luckily I knew someone who knew someone and I ended up getting the test bank. If you know it front to back easies A in the world. Ended up finish with a 95 in there. GET THE TEST BANK
I ended his class with a 79 and asked him to bump up my grade. He agree, however there was a problem with the grade change and it did not register twice. Three months and a dozen emails later he got it all figured out and I walked away with a B. He may not be the greatest teacher ever but he definitely cares about his students.
his lectures are optional. he teaches really close to the book and his tests are basically vocab so read.
HE DOESNT USE TEST BANKS ANYMORE
Very nice and helpful, but he doesn't use the test bank anymore. He follows the textbook and tests are pretty detailed. Also there is no homework which is nice
Dr. Kemp does not teach. All he does in class is read the slideshows that the book provides. He even tells you at the beginning of that no one will come. However, the tests are not that easy. You have to study. This semester his tests had a lot of mistakes because he stopped using the the test bank. If you want to learn bio take someone else.
Dr. Kemp was an amazing professor and is very passionate about the subject. Everyone says his lectures aren't necessary, but I found the details he went into during class extremely helpful for the exams. For studying, the best way was regurgitation of PowerPoints and THE NOTES HE PUTS ONLINE (the best resource). He's one of the best!
He no longer uses a test bank!! He started making his own test questions and they are not worded very well. He had to give us bonus points on every test because he messed up on the questions. His lectures are boring, he reads straight from the posted slides so no need to go to class. Sucky prof but if you read and teach yourself youll pass.
Kemp was a cool guy. However, his class was very long and boring. He does not use the test bank anymore (just a heads up). Hardest class I had last semester. His classes are pointless. He skips through a lot of slides but then stays on one for 30 min to tell a story. 2/10 would not recommend.
He doesn't use a test bank. He reads off the slides. I went to every lecture but never paid attention, just did homework. I read the book a little but mostly used his outlines on ecampus. He made his own tests and they had many mistakes. He had to give us bonus points on every test except the final. His tests are basic if you know the definitions.
Dr. Kemp is a great guy and is extremely willing to help you when you go to him. The tests are typically very straightforward, but a lot of grading errors happened fall 2015. It was frustrating, but he was always there fixing the errors. He just reads off the PowerPoints and talks about his research (which is interesting) but not helpful.
Don't go to class, it's not worth it. Just go to A+ and do your best in lab to learn that material
all he talks about in class is his research, his tests dont have much to do with lecture and are no longer on the test bank so they are more difficult. he is probably the easiest bio prof though
He rambles on in lecture about random stories... barely went to class.. crammed for all the tests and made around a B for most...
Kemp is a nice man, he cares about his students and he tries to make biology as personable as he can. He often talks about his research and his past students to help remember things but tends to go off on tangents. He is a good professor but the material is difficult. Attendance is not mandatory, but you need to study for the exams heavily.
I love Dr. Kemp's class! He incorporates funny stories into his lecture. The best way to get an A in this class is to read at least half of the chapter beforehand, take notes & during lecture, add any additional notes. His exams aren't that hard. Look for old test banks to test yourself. He's very helpful during his office hours.
He used to use test banks to test his class, but recently changed to writing his own tests. The tests are tough. There are three tests and a final. Each test has at lest 6 chapters on it. His lectures are very boring, he reads straight off the powerpoint made by the book company. He will easily lecture through a chapter a day. Go to A PLUS!
Kemp is a very intelligent and interesting man. He'll spend most lectures telling stories about his awesome life experiences but that just leaves him covering the very broad concepts of each chapter. His tests are pretty easy because it's only over the basic. Read the book, get the workbook, and look over the test bank (he uses some of its stuff)
All you have to do to get an A in the class is to take notes over the Ch. powerpoints he posts online. All the information is on those slides. Don't go to class because he doesn't really teach. There are three tests and cumulative final. He's the easiest Bio prof. Look over the online bio image library for the lab practicals and you should be fine.
I enjoyed Kemp's class! His tests are pretty much from his notes/powerpoints and occasional questions from his old test bank. Lecture is not necessary to attend. Easy class to get a B in but you have to work extremely hard to get an A. The final is mainly previous test questions. GO TO A+!!!
Doesn't stay on topic in lecture.... Tests are a lot harder than he makes them seem...
Good Prof, got off topic almost every lecture, first test I failed but then i went to A+ and never made less than a B on the rest. So if you need a prof that you don't really have to attend every lecture and doesn't have any homework he's your guy.
He is a nice guy. He doesn't give any outside homework. He post his slides online and lectures are mostly him just reading them or going off on his random stories. The test are difficult. You have to read the book and I thought the Mastering Biology activities were useful. You have to pay attention and do lots of studying if you want to do well.
Dr. Kemp doesn't really teach, he just reads off of pre-made PowerPoints from the textbook. Get ready to teach yourself and I highly recommend to go to A+ or 4.0 and Go tutoring if you wanna make an A or a B. Good luck!
Kemp is a funny professor! He reads straight off powerpoints for lecture, so a lot of people don't go! He tells crazy stories and tries to keep the class awake but he isn't always successful at this! STUDY THE TEST BANK QUESTIONS FOR TESTS! He says he doesn't use them anymore, but he still does!!!
Dr. Kemp is hilarious but he does just read off the powerpoint slides when it comes to teaching. Consistently lets class out about 30 minutes early everyday, but overall he's a really funny guy cause he tells stories and stuff. He pulls most of his test questions right from the test bank which is fantastic
This class is not an easy class by any means and Dr. Kemp did not make it any easier. His lectures consist of him reading off a powerpoint that comes straight from the textbook, and stories that have nothing to do with the content of the course. His tests are very difficult and he moved faster than the other profs.
No need to every go to class. Learn everything from the lab. Don't need to read the book at all. I have no idea how anybody has trouble with his BIOL111 course. Easy C/B, getting an A would require a small amount of reading. Test questions are highschool biology, really. TAKE HIM.
To succeed in his class, you either need to read the textbook or go to the lecture. I would recommend the lecture because he has some AMAZING stories. Dr. Kemp is a semi-retired biologist from the top of the field who happily shares his passion and experiences with the class. What more could you ask for from a freshman biology professor? Easy tests
DO NOT TAKE KEMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will not learn and you'll have to work extremely hard to make an A or B. Make sure you know the book well. Kemps a nice guy but he will not teach you!! All he does is reads off the powerpoints. If you have to take him, go to aplus!!
Kemp is a really nice guy, but as most have said, he just reads off the powerpoint in class. A majority of the class skips lectures (though I wouldn't necessarily advise doing so) and then goes to A+ tutoring before tests. I never went to A+ and still managed to do well. Everyone struggles with entry bio, but overall Kemp's tests were not terrible.
I absolutely loved Dr. Kemp! He is very experienced and tells stories which make lecture more interesting; however, it is not necessary to attend. I attended every lecture and did not feel like it helped. If you dedicate the time to thoroughly read every chapter, outline the chapter, and look at his outlines he posts, the class is an easy A.
Kemp was a really nice and humorous old guy. Sadly, participation is totally not mandatory so only like 1/4 of people actually went. He just lectures straight from the textbook powerpoints. Your final grade only includes 3 exams plus the final so tests are extremely important. Go to A+ for review as many questions are also on his tests.
Lectures are very vague. He tends to tell long stories that have nothing to do with the material he is teaching. Reads straight from a powerpoint he puts online.
This class is an easy A. He literally reads straight from the powerpoints that are posted online so you don't have to show up to class. As long as you study the powerpoints you can make an A in his class.
Kemp is a super easy professor if you go to class. Read the book, go to class and SI sessions, and get his test bank. Easy A. His stories about his research are very interesting.
I dont know if it was just me but I did everything he told us to do to pass this class i.e SI sessions, A+, office hours, read the book etc. I still was making a D in the class before I had to drop. I would make 100's on homework and even had SI leaders saying I would be fine but still failed.
Class is optional. Go if you're bored and want to hear about his experiences. Tests aren't easy. The book is well written and you need it. You won't pass without knowing it. Final was harder than regular exams. He's a solid choice though.
Bio is just a hard subject. Kemp is funny and loves to tell stories. The content is difficult and he teaches straight from the text book, he reads straight off the power point throughout lecture.
You don't have to go to class. About every other week he does bonus points in class and you definetely want those. So I would go. The tests are not too difficult if you read the book, study his powerpoints and GO to Aplus tutoring! So many of the questions from Aplus are the same ones that are on his tests. He is easier than the other biology prof
All he does is read of the lectures, but go to class for the extra credit. If you have the testbanks then you're pretty much good to go!
Lecture isn't required, most people learn more by reading the textbook. HOWEVER, in class extra credit changed my grade from an 85% to an A. Kemp is a sweet, old man, but I personally didn't learn much from him. To do well on his tests, completely dissect his online PowerPoints. If you have A+ test reviews, you'll have half the exam questions.
Kemp is a sweet man, but not an awesome lecturer because he just reads off the powerpoints. That being said, his exams are reasonable as long as you have the test banks and understand and know all of the powerpoints. The labs and textbook filled in the gaps for me. Also, go to class for extra credit.
Class is very boring bc he reads off of PPT slides from the textbook company until he starts telling his stories about his life which are always cool. 25 points of extra credit were offered this semester for pop quizzes given out every now and then during class and a few online questions worth 50 points so your grade isn't based solely off tests
Dr. Kemp was a really interesting professor who had several funny stories and life experiences. I enjoyed lecture because of his stories not really because I learned a ton. Study the lectures notes before each exam and go to class for extra credit and you'll pass no problem.
Dr Kemp has been teaching Biology for a very long time and frankly just doesn't give that much effort anymore. The lecture doesn't help much, and you can get away with doing homework in class and answering the bonus questions when they arise. Go to A-plus and study the notes that he posts, and you should be golden.
Dr. Kemp is a real og. He loves telling stories in class and is a very laid back. So go to class to listen to his stories and possibly get a extra points. His test are easy just go to a plus and look at the test bank and its an easy A.
Dr. Kemp was the realest prof I've ever had. Whatever you do, don't take Tag. Use his test banks and you'll fly through the class without even reading the book. ALSO USE EASY NOTE CARDS TEST PREP, Questions come straight from there! This man once showed up to class in cargos, flip flops and aviators. A real OG!
Lectures are useless. Go to A+, use test banks, read the textbook. Fell asleep during lectures, goes on tangents. Had to completely self-teach. He's getting paid to go through powerpoints lol. Would never take again
Only Bio teacher that I would recommend at TAMU. Lectures aren't really useful except for the extra credit but Kemp is a cool dude! As long as you read the textbook and pay attention and go through his notes the tests are easy! Mostly focus on the lab part of the class because that was the hardest part in my opinion.
Very sweet man, he makes his lectures fun with some personal stories. Pretty easy grader. read the chapters before he goes over them, and you'll get an A.
Kemp's lectures are straight from the book. You don't even really have to go to class, but he does offer extra credit quizzes in class! They help. The tests were easy, and there isn't much homework at all. The hard part about this course is definitely the lab portion. Try to get a lab time later in the week so you have time to do the reports!
Lectures are super boring and pointless. He goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with biology. Only point of going to class is to get the extra credit points. Go to A+ or look at the test banks to study.
He's a nice guy and has cool stories, but his lectures are completely pointless and boring. He is absolutely unresponsive to emails and phone calls, which is inconvenient. His tests were a lot of test bank questions, but you have to know more than that. Definitely not the worst prof out there, but far from being the best
Great guy but doesn't teach you must more than his notes he posts online will tell you. You don't need the textbook to make a good grade unless you want the extra access. Does extra credit pop quizzes which is why anybody in the class even shows up. Attendance isn't necessary. Really funny guy and tests are straight from his test banks.
He reads straight from the power points. Use online test banks to study for his tests and you will get a good grade. He gives extra credit points during class using an online question system. If it weren't for the extra points, showing up wouldn't even be worth it. He's a parasitologist and his stories are sometimes really interesting.
Everything that everyone is saying is true. Lectures are boring but study the test bank and you'll do fine. You can tell he's ready to retire but I would take him over the others.
Dr. Kemp is a wonderful professor! The lectures were kind of boring not going to lie, but he is very knowledgeable and kind! Come to class for bonus points and you might hear some of his jokes too. Really a kind man and I have nothing bad to say. Tests aren't too bad if you really study because it's a lot of info. I don't even like science!
Attendance is not required, but show up for LC (extra credit). 3 exams, 40 questions each. Final is 60 questions. For lab, put a lot of focus on the major assignment that you will write a short paper for each week. Study for lab quizzes, as these can hurt your grade if you don't take them seriously. For lab practical, study the manual in advance.
Dr. Kemp is a sweet man, but doesn't really teach. He reads off the power points (which he posts online), so people never really showed up to class. Instead, they would just stay home and read over the lectures. However, he randomly gives extra credit to the ones who do show up to class, but doesn't warn the students, in advance, on which day.
Professor Kemp is really nice and caring & much better one on one. However, the lectures aren't very helpful and you have to teach yourself. Make sure to use the test bank, form study groups, and go to class for the learning catalytic because it can move you up a letter grade.
I didn't open my book a single time but bought a season pass for A+. I didn't study outside of class or do any work besides going to every session that A+ offered. I went to class and got all pop quiz bonus points which took my grade at the end of the semester from a high C to a low B. Go to class to get bonus points but work on other homework.
Get ready to teach yourself. Personally, Kemp is a great guy, funny, and very knowledgeable. However, during lecture he reads off the slides. Take the lab seriously it will help boost your grade. The tests are very difficult, don't rely completely on the test bank. Friends who read the book and studied two weeks prior did fine. Don't cram for tests
Kemp was such a nice guy and very funny. I used test banks, went to A Plus, read the textbook. 30 points are given at the end as extra credit.
Professor Kemp is one of the funniest profs at A&M, and I really enjoyed taking his class. Reads off the slides (Which are given to you) so you don't learn much unless you read them. I highly recommend going to A+ and using the test bank. FOCUS IN LAB, it can be the difference between passing or failing. Show up to class for LC credit, its worth it
Professor Kemp is a good choice for bio. He is not unreasonably tough, but you definitely have to work for your grade. Lab helped my grade a lot, however I still did well on the tests because of A+. He also gives bonus points and there are problem sets to help boost your grade. Definitely would not have gotten an A without A+ tutoring though.
Everyone hates intro bio, but we all have to take it (if you're reading this). However, Kemp is a solid choice. At first i hated his class, but then i discovered his wonderful test banks. Never opened the bio book, never went to any tutoring and still pulled a B. Attendance isn't really mandatory, but I suggest you go. Funny stories
Kemp is so easy lol. I really don't know him though because I skipped all but my first class because his lectures were boring and unnecessary. I ended up with an easy A just by reading textbooks, slides and showing up for tests. I would recommend him because he is so easy. The thing is you don't learn anything much...
He goes pretty fast in lectures and doesn't really take the time to explain difficult concepts. He's a super nice guy with some great stories but sometimes he spends more time telling stories than teaching. He really respects students and loves what he does but this class was hard. APlus was my best friend, it helped a ton.
Professor was an okay person, told very interesting stories in class about his life but when it came to giving useful information during lecture was not interesting at all. Very bland, boring lectures. However, everything is posted online. Went to APlus but didnt help as much because he decided to change the exams. Wouldnt take again!
Dude should write a personal memoir because he is chock-full of stories. I think he is over the hill as far as teaching biology goes, though. I went to lecture every day and learned practically nothing relevant. He just goes on tangents about life in the 60s and I forget what we are learning. Josh the A+ guy is a stud, though. Man deserves a raise.
He knows a lot about the subject but just uses powerpoints from the textbook provider in class, making lectures boring. Powerpoints are posted online but aren't that useful for tests. Read the textbook or memorize the TEST BANK.
Dr. Kemp's lectures were very boring. He just read off the slides and made it difficult to stay awake. He does some extra credit in class, but that's pretty much the only reason to go. Teaching yourself and going to tutoring is the best way to get through the class, because it is a lot of information. Tests are hard, but doable if you study well.
Lectures are really boring but if you go to them he gives extra credit. I usually just read the text book in class instead of listening to his lectures because he just reads off the slides.
Kemp is an easy A in the sense that his test banks are online and at A+, but beware, my semester he used the test bank for all except Exam 2, thus an extreme drop in the class average. However, I switched to Lee second semester because I learned nothing from the class despite getting an A. I went to every SI, but that won't help with his tests
If you like stories, take him. If you want to learn the material, don't take him. The only reason I passed tests was because of the test banks. He is a very nice man and is the smartest dude ever but literally ONLY reads off the slides in class (they are posted online). Only reason to go to class is random extra credit. STUDY FOR LAB QUIZZES!
Dr. Kemp is definitely a nice guy, but man he doesn't really teach. He is those professors you feel bad giving a bad review, but honestly I would not take his class again. PLEASE STUDY FOR THOSE EXAMS!! He reads off the slides and tells funny stories. In other words, go to lectures only for LC's and laugh but not exactly to learn anything.
Kemp is a character. He has super cool stories and is about as entertaining as they come, however he has been teaching for like 40 years and so he is kind of set in his ways of just reading off the slides. A plus is your best friend. Would recommend taking Kemp because his class is definitely doable.
There are so many better biology 111 professors at A&M. He pretty much tells you from the beginning of the year that most people drop his course. He reads directly off of the slides that he posts online. That being said, you really don't have to go to class other than the occasional LC's that he provides for extra credit. Don't take Kemp. Trust me.
Kemp was not the best professor because he just read of the slides, however if you go to aplus and study the test banks you will be fine. It's so sad that is his last semester because it such a sweet old man and has the best stories. Lab was a breeze minus the quizzes. (don't blow them off!!!)
I basically taught myself biology because he was no help at all and he doesnt know how to lecture. He goes off topic a lot and just reads the slides, so I would take my notes before class which took awhile because each powerpoint is 70-80 slides long. Study his test banks online and thats the only way you'll do good on exams 2 and 3
Kemp gives no slack to his students. He just reads off his slides which he posts online so barely anyone shows up to his class. All the 3 plus final tests this sem were from the test banks so they were super easy. If you want to really learn the material memorize all the info from his slides (21 chap. and 60-80 slides each). Lab was super easy.
The powerpoint slides and the online test banks are your best bet for this class. I thought Kemp was a great prof and cared about his students a lot. Gave a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester too.
If you have Kemp sorry but you didn't enroll in BIOL 111 you enrolled in the history of his life. The only thing he taught me is his life story, any biology I learned was from A+. This class is not difficult at all but you have to teach yourself everything since Kemp won't so it comes across like it is difficult. Escape quick and switch to Tag.
Not a good prof. He reads from the slides, doesn't give you time to write down any notes, doesn't teach, and class ends 30-40 min early almost every TR lecture which is cool but you don't learn anything. I had to teach myself everything and barely got a B. It was very tough and his lectures are online but they're 60-80 slides each. Do not take him.
Glad I took APBIO in HS. Had to teach myself or go to 4.0 and go for tutoring. The material is not hard, just a lot to memorize. Lectures are useless, he just reads off the slides you have access to. I only went for the LC extra credit, but I would not pay attention and just studied during class. Tests are easy if you know the powerpoint well.
Prof Kemp has many interesting stories, and cares about his students. However, he tends to read off the slides and get sidetracked. You really have to memorize his powerpoints because his tests are very specific, general concepts from high school will not help in this course. Some swear by the test bank, some do fine without it.
He was a great professor! Told lots of stories during lecture. The tests were very straightforward. Go to class to get extra credit and because lecture material is on the test.
Dr. Kemp was ok. He does not use the new e-book that the university uses for this class. He explicitly says that he does not like it. I went to 4.0 and go and did very well in this class. Don't waste your time reading the book, his lectures do NOT follow the book. Read the slides before the lectures, go to class for lc, and also he does curve.
Kemp was an okay choice for BIOL 111. But beware, the responsibility for you to learn the material will be on you because there are a lot of things he won't go over or will briefly mention that are imperative to know. He makes the class bearable with his story telling, but they can also get in the way of the actual lecture.
All Kemp does is read off of the slides in lectures. He intentionally makes the class more difficult that it needs to be. He talks more about his personal experiences and teaches less, so when exam time comes around, you are anything but prepared. I have been stressed the entire semester because of him.
