Had him as a TA. This class was the only 1 I looked forward to coming to. He cares alot about his students, and makes them think more about the world around them. Very straight forward very outspoken. one of the greatest lecturers all around a great guy.

Very different... Certainly the most engaging of all my classes so far. I have a really hard time accepting some of what he says, and he can be VERY hard to argue with, but hey, isn't it all about the challenge?

Unique teaching style. once you complete one of his courses, you come out with a differece in the way you think and process information in real life. his approach is not making you memorize things, but to be able to think for yourself.

Thinking is a biologically inherited capacity - not a know-how. If this guy thinks, what about others? I am glad I had this course.

Walter is one of the most intelligent men on earth. His teaching style is one that you can work with...he really makes you think about your surroundings. I would HIGHLY recommend a class that Mr. Perchal is teaching. You will never be bored in his class.

Simply the best professor I have met so far. He engages the class and he tries his best to keep everyone interested in the course. He cuts the unnecessary material and gets to the point of the course, while keeping it very engoyable. Highly recommended, and has alot of intellecual things to say.

A word to the wise. Folks...his politics may sound "Left" and out of touch with what goes on outside of the four walls of York...but he knows the world. All naysayers...look past the rhetoric and other York inspired drivle he has to teach and you will see that he really is there for his students

He's quite some person. Apparently the admin doesn't like him very much--> no reading list, no specific request of students, and everything flexible but within the idea that you do what you need to do in the course) Great guy in and outside of class. The good personality comes with the course too.

I just have him as the professor for a Correspondence course. But, he seems fair and helpful. He sends emails out (or has his TAs) for information about all assignments, and gave us a great outline for the final. All the hype seems to be accurate.

If you want an easy credit to get your social science out of the wya, then this is definately the course for you! Yes, 90% of the lectures are B.S. but he gives you the exam questions in advance! FYI - Depnding on your TA, you will not need to buy any of the books.

Best prof I've had at York - very different. Everyone complaining that you don't "learn" anything in the course means that you don't get to read extremely long and boring notes which you need to memorize for an exam. If you're looking for just that, then yeah, by any means do not take this course. It was the only exam I actually looked forward to.

THE BEST PROFESSOR, BY FAR, THAT I HAVE EVER HAD! He goes outside the course and puts his heart and sole into teaching students how to "think". He challenges students to explore their beliefs and ask questions. He is very entertaining and respectful. I still occasionally come to York just to sit-in in his lectures (and I have already graduated).

Had Walter Perchal twice now. Awesome professor. Has intersting material that everyone should be aware of; very knowledgble; very straight up about what the course is about; motivating; etc. He is the best professor I had in University so far. Lastly, incase you are worried for your grade you get what you work for.

walter is just a fantastic prof. this course was very interesting (lectures & materials) essays were easy. as long as you put some effort into your work your garunteed at least a B. he also gave us take-home final exam (very easy) if you want an interesting course, good grade and awsome proff. walter and his courses are the way to go.

Simply put, this professor is absolutely amazing. Despite not really needing to take down notes, you learn a LOT. The way he teaches works wonders and leaves you actually pondering what he said after class. Very approachable and just an overall great professor.

Great Prof, made the class interesting! Had problem with grades after course was over and he stuck around to help, recommend this class to anyone! Didn't open the book and got a B!

I took this course online and we were marked on 4 essays. The course seemed hard at fast because the topics seemed difficult but once you actually applied yourself and started putting words on a paper, it got easy because the textbooks assigned had all the content required to write the essays. Ended up with a B in the course.

Most amazing prof ever. Lectures are extremley interesting and they make you want to come back to the class. Work is very reasonable and you always get the mark you deserve. Very fair professor. Definitely take his courses as I will most definitely do.

I took his class "Prospects and Perils of the 21st century" The classes were interesting and kept at a good pace. The learning environment was somewhat informal which was great. Readings were not mandatory, and you chose what you wanted to learn. Essays were left open to your own topic which was great. Lastly, grades were extremely fair.

A legendary prof. in my experience at York. Makes you Think, though he can be a little bit arrogant, however, he's fair. He doesn't tolerate **** and he's very realistic. You have to be interested in the class for him, and his lectures will make you, unless you're pathetically lazy

It is a very interesting class, not very challenging, good choice for an elective, as a fourth year accounting student I appreciate that I don't need to read a lot for this class, just come to the lectures and listen. Tutorials are amazing, so stay until the very end of class! I do not know whether or not he is a hard marker, yet to find out

Walter is great. He explains things really well - I do not agree that you don't have to come to class. This course is (as he says) "about you" - you learn and take away what is important to you. It's not about learning something and then throwing it back at him in a MC exam. He is great and he has really great stories to tell. Go to every class.

You would be foolish to think this is a bird course, if you do you are cheating no one but yourself. If you were looking for a hand out don't bother wasting your time or Professor Perchal. Come to each class, sit down and learn something. The more you get out of the class the better the grade you will... dare i say it...EARN!

Great guy. He warns you at the beginning that if you are only here to get an A your in the wrong class. Only take this if you really are interested in earning your mark, which is really easy to do as long you come to class. He makes everything so interesting and the tutorials are great discussion as well. Also a really helpful guy.

This man is an asset to York University. You probably will never have another prof with more guts and life experience than this guy. Best prof that I've ever had at York.

He is a very passionate prof. and cares about the success of his students. He is trying to get people to care about becoming educated and informed about what is going on in the world. HREQ 1950 is so interesting, I highly recommend this course, if you care about your own education and work hard on the few assignments given, you will do well.

This is a professor that does something that is rarely done in education now a days, that is to encourage, foster and build for you to question and think critically. He challenges us because he believes that we can provide the answers to our problems and not to look to our predecessors. He is asking us to work hard and not to take the easy road out

Perchal was honestly the best professor I ever had! His class is the most fun you will ever experience in a classroom setting. His lectures are so inspirational and thought provoking, guarantee you'll be thoroughly entertained each class! The rumour about how few A's he gives is not true! If you deserve an A, you will get one. A must take!

Having the priviledge to have taken thi course in my last year, all I got to say this course should be relabled Depression's of 21 century. Every single class I would get depressed leaving it lol. He was a very passionate professor, not seen much in other classes and overall I learned quiet alot.

Reasons: 1) Awesome guy, will make time for everyone. 2) Super smart & knowledgeable. 3) Fair marker. 4) Passionate about material & the success of students. 5) Really cool (so many people line up to speak to him after lecture and he'll take to everyone). I definitely recommend any course with him!!!

Probably the only professor, that's making a difference within york. You need to work for your grade, but hands down he is the best. He will guide you through the course, attendance is not mandatory, but if you show up and show interest you will end up with a decent grade. He's really understanding and nice to his students.

I'm not sure about some of the comments on here but this prof is the best York has. We are an indifferent society and the perils that face humanity at the moment are serious and not to be ignored. This prof asks you to make a difference, how many courses challenge you to do that? Take his class and learn like you never have, you wont regret it.

This class will make you feel uncomfortable because the material he discusses are about the issues we tend to ignore and be indifferent to. I learned a lot from this class and I also learned something from myself. Dr. Perchal really cares about his students and wants them to care about the world as well. It's worth it to stay till 10 for his class

Walter is one of the best profs you will ever encounter amongst York. Of course the issues he discusses in class are somewhat disturbing because it is what we choose to ignore in society and amongst ourselves. He will challenge you to think differently and encourage you to make a change. 2 essays + a final assignment. You get what you work for.

I've studied abroad & at York U; honestly, I have NEVER had such an amazing, inspirational, gem of a professor! His teaching style is to prepare us for the future, for the real world. He's very up-front, the class was a real eye-opener and I would recommend it to EVERY student. The best prof. Hands down, no comparison. No words can do him justice.

I've never had a prof like him. Just so inspirational and passionate about what he teaches. He can really open your eyes to a new side of things and all he wants, is to see his student grow. There are 2 major papers (10-15 pgs/each) that sum up your grade, no exams or tests. But it's totally worth it! You will learn so much from him!

Professor Perchal not only taught great life lessons in his lectures but also opened my eyes to things that not every millennial realizes. The course material may be dry at times but overall he made it easy to listen to and enjoyable to be a part of. Class discussions were always interesting. I would absolutely take one of his classes again!

Professor Perchal changed my views, values, and ideas around life for the better in this course. I left the course becoming more knowledgeable of the World and the emerging things that will lead our future. Course should be essential for all students to take as it is future focussed and not living in the past, like every other course I have taken!

Such a caring professor who genuinely wants to be there for his students! Always available after class to talk to about grades and what not and you can tell he just wants his students to do good! He can be a little pushy in terms of what he is teaching but he wants everyone to see the bigger picture! Great prof would take his classes again!

One of the best courses I've taken at York. Yes material is heavy in terms of the content but Walter is the type of professor that makes sure to teach in such a way that made the material is not heavy to grasp. He brings in a lot of experiential learning. He is very open to listen to your concerns and ideas for class content. Overall great!

One of the only classes Ive ever taken that I came out learning something real. Really focuses on community involvement. For the major assignment students volunteer and bring course content into the real world. Ive never had a professor like him and his class was really rewarding. Be genuine and attempt to learn something, its an easy A.

I took this course in my last year but walked away possibly learning more in that class than all my four years at York. Professor Perchal makes his lectures interesting and really emphasizes our duty to other people and community engagement. A genuinely intelligent man that you can learn a lot from.

Walter is great! In every lecture, he encourages you to learn and grow intellectually. He makes the class enjoyable and you to reflect on what you learned in tutorials. Assignments were clear and you have some freedom with the final paper. "I don't want you to believe me, I want you to learn" 10/10

The best prof I've ever had the honour of listening to. Super interesting lectures that don't put you to sleep and talk about real world stuff as to boring academia. Super easy assignments (all due at the end of the semester), no tests or exams. Would 110% recommend this prof to everyone.

If you can, take a class with Walter! Only two assignments and the TAs are very flexible. An amazing prof whos compassionate for his students, and passionate about the material at hand. Dont take him for granted you wont get many profs like this, if any at all.

Great prof, albeit not very optimistic about the future of humanity/the planet. Lot's of regurgitated info too. That said, it's a really interesting class that I think everyone should take for the simple reason that the critical issues humanity faces in the future is crucial to know and understand so that we can DO something to change it.

Walter Perchal is an absolute gem of a human being. He is an incredible professor, he genuinely cares about his students, and his lectures are very interesting and inspirational and it allows you to really understand the reality of our world, and to learn more about yourself in the process. I would highly recommend this course.

Walter is a Profs that genuinely cares about his students. His lectures were always inspirational but they weren't structured. He didn't use powerpoint or follow a clear lecture outline. He would just talk and often go off on tangents which made it hard to follow. Most of the learning is done in the tutorial so if you participate you'll do well.

Perchal made lectures very enjoyable, covering current issues from climate change to the development of AI. This course encourages you to apply the knowledge you learn to solving these issues. There were no exams, just 2 assignments and 2 essays over the course of the whole year. I would love to take another course with him, he is inspirational.

Dr. Perchal is ought to be the best professor I think I will ever encounter during my time in post-secondary education. I have taken two of his courses thus far, and throughout this time Dr. Perchal doesn't fail to be incredibly inspirational and his care for student learning is clear. What a competent and inspirational professor. That is all.

one of the best professors I've ever had, his approach to teaching is refreshing (definitely difficult if you can't make the switch from traditional schooling system methods) and genuinely listens to his students and tries to address any difficulties. He's a hard marker for sure, but really makes you feel like you're learning and not just memorise

Hands down one of the best profs I've ever had. He actually cares about his students and their education. Very easy to talk to. Marking can be slow, but that's because he's doing it all on his own without TAs. Really encouraging and engaging with his students, the only downfall is that I had to take his class online instead of in-person.

I really enjoyed taking this course with Professor Perchal. He is so good at what he does and is very fair. He is very understanding of students circumstances and accommodates well. He creates a safe space for students to discuss and participate, something that I think all profs at York should note. Definitely recommend this course and professor.

Loved this prof. He doesnt record lectures so u need to attend & take notes. He's an expert in the DEMS field and thus made class so interesting. He's a fair grader with clear expectations. There were 2 essays and reflection every week 1 journal. He can go on long tangents which is hard to follow but he is super cool. Def would recommend.

Prof. Perchal takes students through the causes and consequences of genocide all while creating a safe and positive learning environment. I took HREQ 4820 with Professor Perchal, and it was an intense experience. Professor Perchal makes it their goal to ensure that students are active in their own learning and he really cares about the students. It was a very inspiring journey and you will actually learn something important. If you can take a course with him, please do.

I have taken classes with Dr. Perchal 4 years in a row. Prepare for something entirely different. Dr. Perchal puts the students first, it is a student centered class. The papers are flexible, the topics are flexible, be prepared to be engaged in the class room because that is where all the magic happens! He is excellent, fun and caring.

Prof Perchal was very inspirational and only stated the truth and/ or information to get us thinking. He taught us info to prepare us for the future and wants the best for us. My life has been changed!

Honestly, I enjoyed this class far more than I could have imagined. I genuinely learned a lot from it; the work I did for this course is some of what I consider my best work. I would honestly recommend this course for everyone to at least be able to experience it for themselves.

Had Walter in 1993 and changed my understanding of the state of the world. Wars you never hear about vs the one's on network news etc. really engaging and enlightening, my favorite Professor during my time at York U

Nothing but amazing things to say about this professor. Will be taking again 1) for my GPA, 2) because it was an amazing class to go to to relieve your stress and 3) you can make some fun friends. He and all the TA's were incredibly understanding and helpful to students during the strike too which was a big win for me.

Walter's lectures and insight should be worth more than what you are paying for this class. Think of him kind of like a dad who is helping you to survive in this world. AP/HREQ 2440 - Human Rights in the Age of Surveillance. This course is very informative. It will change your perspective on the use of technology and how it is affecting our lives. Dr. Perchal is one professor that I can say truly cares about his students. most of the work and assignments are based on what we want to learn and our own experiences mixed with course material that was thought in the lecture.

I took this summer course (2023) and it was a right choice for me to expand my knowledge on Human Rights in the Age of Surveillance. Especially, the professor was so awesome, so that's why I continued another great course (HREQ 3150) with him. Highly recommend, guys.

I had Sanjana Rahman as my TA: best TA I have ever had.. as long as you showed your effort you can easily get an A or A+. Lectures I never attended because of other heavy classes and never affected me, wasn't necessary.. but when I went a few times its very captivating, funny, and interesting. I'm taking him again this year.

Firstly this is a great one-of-a-kind professor, no one like him within the york, you will not have courses like this that make you think about topics especially "terrorism" the way he does.On the other hand the lack of clear guidelines in all assignments - very subjective (no email responses), oddly strong anti trump stance keeps it interesting.

Walter may seem a bit unorganized with no rubrics, outlines, ect but he cares deeply about his Students. He will never let his students feel stressed as he gives extensions very easily and is a easy marker.

The professor was not really interesting as 90% of the students never attended class only tutorials. Starting of the semester was the most stressful as there was no clear guidelines or framework about what was gonna happen in this class. It seemed the worst class but if you just attend tutorials and do the work on time, its an easy A.

Dr. Perchel is one of the most exceptional profs I have ever had. I have taken a number of courses with him and have learned so much.I highly recommend his courses. Those complaining about the lack of guidance are looking to be spoon fed and babied, he is teaching us how to be independent and think for ourselves. His instructions are always clear.

Professor Perchal truly wants to assist students and is very friendly. His lessons are entertaining, and he is a fascinating person. The only issue is that, for a full-year course, I only received one mark throughout the year, and I had no idea how my final grade was calculated—it simply appeared on my transcript.
