Hard work. If you want to write well, it's a great class. It's very hard with about 6 or 7 creative nonfiction stories due throughout the semester. They have to be good.
Prothero is tough! He goes really fast so make sure you can write notes very quickly! His tests are pretty hard, but if you study really hard and read the extra required text book, they're okay. His obsession with global warming is a little annoying.
If you want to learn how to write well, take the class. If you are breezing through school to get good grades and finish as quick as possible, don't take the class. Prothero is the best writing teacher that I have had.
Literally the only thing I learned the whole semester was the definition of creative nonfiction. Worst teacher of all time. Useless class. Useless grading. Useless test. Useless teacher. It wasn't hard at all, but it was miserable. If you want to learn what he SHOULD be teaching you, read the book he requires but doesn't use: Word's Worth.
Worst prof. ever. Couldn't stand him. Docked my grade for attendance because he said he silently took role everyday, but there was no seating chart and he had to ask my name at the end of the semester when I raised my hand. Was the one and only class that I felt the prof. actually gave me a lower grade because he did not like me.
Very good teacher. Not a professor you want if you want to skate by in zoology without studying.
This teacher is absolutely obsessed with global warming. This was a Human Biology class, yet he makes me buy "The Weather Makers," which is about global warming. Three fourths of the grade was on 3 different tests, and the other quarter on a report about global warming. Go ahead and take this course if global warming is your real interest in life.
Overall A great 1010 teacher, I will take his 2010
His class is easy until you take the test, which is rediculous. The entire grade is based on three test and one report on global warming. We had over 10 people in class and only 1 person passed, they took the class the semester before and failed the first time through! The average grade on the test was in low 60's out of 100, for an intro class!!
Plan on writing a lot! Very helpful. You will either love this teacher or hate him. I plan on taking more classes from him but you need to get on his good side. He does know what he is talking about. Only one test but you'd better study.
He likes to spout off random trivia, while expecting you to take notes. It would have been better if he'd at least use power points. It doesn't even seem like he even knows what he is talking about. He also takes pleasure in hunting. Elephants included. I would not recommend this teacher.
he never returns work and gives really hard tests with no review and no help...aka loved the class hes a great guy but does not help u to succeed at all!
He was tough, but a really great professor.
I wouldn't recommend this professor. He's hard to take notes on, pretty much just sits and reads from the textbook. His tests are VERY hard, short answer and essay questions, and he's a strict grader. He requires way too much out-of-class work, homeless shelter service and reading a book about global warming. It's way too hard for an intro class.
sure, he's an entertaining guy, but he can't teach worth a damn. he rarely returns critiques or provides feedback. You grade will be a mystery from day one since he changes the grading scale on a whim. His tests are difficult, he finds the most obscure information in the texts to put on the exam.
I would not wish this class on my worst enemy. His teaching was horrible, tests were impossible. Attendance was mandatory. The worst class and the worst teacher I've ever had.
Great guy I took this class and loved it. Yes it is a hard class but isn't that what college is about? it is a do able class the with a little bit of study and SI I received a solid "A". The tests are tough but he tells you almost exactly what is on the test and what to study for you can't ask for more then that.
I loved this class and got an A. Had to take lots of notes but go to the SI sessions provided because they are extremely helpful. He tells you exactly what's on the test. Not much use of textbook just notes. You have to read a book called The Weather Makers but he tells what he'll ask from the book. If you study you will get an A.
He is an excellent teacher, but this class is extremely hard. If you don't memorize a lot of what he teaches, then you won't do well on his tests at all. Overall, it is an interesting class but be prepared to do a lot of studying for the exams!
Very tough class. Everything is more difficult than it needs to be. Discussions were stimulating but I didn't learn much. He picks the topic of your research papers which I found to be restrictive. Also, he loves assigned reading and his tests were on obscure material. I would recommend avoiding his English classes if possible.
Moves very quickly through course material. Hard to understand exactly what is supposed to be read in text. Good personality, but teaches a tough class.
The class is extremely difficult for an entry level course. Prothero speeds through material and gives extremely hard exams (consists of essays & fill in the blank ONLY). You will need to study every day. Take this class if you want to be challenged, but be ready to be shocked by the difficulty. Dont get me wrong though, Prothero was a character :]
Like the professor a lot. Doesn't do slides, attendance is mandatory. Extra credit on each exam. Will work with you. First part of the class you don't use the book really just his notes. Second half relies mainly on the book. Have to study a lot. Everyday! Overall challenging class really enjoyed it.
AVOID TEACHER! He is a Zoology teacher and for some stupid reason thinks he can teach English classes. During class he won't explain clearly what he wants, and if your interpretation of the stories aren't exactly like his, You fail. Horrible English Teacher and does off the board hand written tests in class and our class average was a 72%
This is a difficult class. There is no homework, just the tests. Be prepared to study hard! Also, go to the SIs, they are extremely helpful! Go to class every time and study hard.
Very difficult at first, but he's a great professor and I learned so much in his class. SI is extremely important in this class as well!! Just go to class, take notes, and study hard.
Worst proffessor I ever had! Not interested in helping you learn. He just wants to show off his knowledge and then asks stupid questions on test to trick you that have nothing to do with what he taught in class.
One-on-one advice from a former editor and published author of 250 articles and 8 books? Priceless! What a privilege we have at Weber State to learn from a rare teacher who practices what he teaches, and who knows what editors and publishers want. I credit Prothero for teaching me how to write right, which got me?and many other students?published.
The class is difficult, Prothero grades fairly even offering extra credit on every exam. He tells you exactly what is on each exam and is willing to go out of his way to meet with or help students. Must be a hard worker to get an A, but it's definitely a class worth taking! LOVED IT!
He is very interested in the subject and it is his life. That being said, it was super hard class! He has you watch movies then tests on where it was filmed, Not the content or anything relavant. Also, there is a required book to read, which has no relation to the course! Hard tests. Not willing to work with you. If you miss a class, you fail.
This seems like a hard class at first, but he tells you EVERYTHING that will be on the test and it's up to YOU to study. This is a college course, so work hard and you'll get an A. Go to SI sessions, they are very helpful!
Learning from an accomplished author 8+ books, former Associate Editor of Field and Stream Magazine, and author of 250+ articles equaled a priceless educational opportunity!
Terrible professor. Expects students to memorize ridiculous information. Woudlnt recommend him.
At first you will be intimidated, because he is a very serious guy. Has his unique sense of humor. He will make sure you get an A and that you work hard for it and come out remembering what you learned for life. He is not boring. Great guy with interesting true stories, different from most teachers. He is somewhat traditional, study well! USE BOOK!
You will either like him or not, but the class has a simple system for success: 1. attend every class, 2. take notes, 3. Go to SI, 4. study - he tells you - with the test in front of him exactly what you need to study (even the bonus questions). Go to SI and do the test reviews and you will get an A if you just study exactly what you are told to.
Fantastic professor! He doesn't go by the book but by what he's experienced as an editor and published author. He tells you how it is. He's honest, sincere and he gets to the point. You get out what you put it. He gives you the opportunity to be creative; just show effort and you pass.
Best professor ever, although the class is pretty difficult- it is not impossible. Go to EVERY class, and attend the SI sessions, you will be just fine. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Prothero. He is passionate about the subject and has great stories and photos that make learning interesting. He is my favorite professor by far!
Best professor I've had yet. He's funny. Study hard. Don't be stupid. Listen. He's a good guy with lots of stories and more experience than most people will ever be able to match.
Great teacher with a good personality! It's a hard class but that is expected. If you don't show up to the class or take notes don't blame the grade on the teacher. Show up, buy the book, go to SI, participate, and try for extra credit. If you do all those things and study, study, study , and study you pass. There is no just getting by in the class
Walter was an awesome professor!Just don't miss class, and make sure you BUY YOUR TEXT BOOK!!!! He tells the most awesome stories, and you can go to SI's for extra help! greatest teacher that I have EVER had! DEFINITELY RECCOMEND
Great guy, with lots of cool stories to tell. He is a fair grader, gives you all the questions to the test, and lots of extra credit on every test. However this class is very hard, you must study and must show up for class. He is very helpful and will answer all your questions but you must ask them.
AWESOME TEACHER! I would take this class again, He tell you everything that will be on the test, If you go to the SI to study before a test, you should get a good grade, requires little studying( only before tests) funny teacher and really helpful, just make sure you ask questions, he can go through material fast.
Stay away.Mr.Prothereo seems to think that he is a climatologist.Req reading has nothing to do with biology. He is more suited to the role of global alarmist. His facts regarding human population were wrong, stance on evolution was wish washy, and his over-all far left malthusianistic aproach to population control was preachy at worst.
Prothero is a great guy, just not a great professor. His tests contradict what he would say in class. I took this class from Chung and Prothero is way better. Just make sure you go to SI, take notes, and record his lectures. It's not a bad class, just go and pay attention. He also gives you study guides with questions from the test.
Avoid this class if you're a slacker. However, I loved this class! It was really interesting and the professor really knew what he was talking about. If you study, you'll pass.
I loved every minute of this class. Granted, that could be my own interest in the subject, BUT Prof Prothero is also imho a fantastic teacher. Take good notes, pay attention, don't miss class, STUDY, and you will pass no problem. Taking this from Prothero is not a no-work class, but it is a high-benefit class. He is engaging and nice. :)
I was really excited for this class until the first test. The material on the test contradicts what he says in class. He makes you read a book on the climate, when it is rarely integrated in class. There is no homework whatsoever to go over material; purely studying. The tests were all short answer, TF, and fill in the blanks. NO GO!
Human Bio is one of the "toughest" classes for Gen. Ed. I think that Prof. Prothero is actually a great teacher. His classes are long because he just reads through notes. Has a weird teaching pattern, but he does a good job. Tests are very difficult. There is an SI group available and I would highly recommend going to that.
The worst teacher I've ever had. Do not take this class, I'm and "A" student and barely pulled a "C". He teaches about climate and makes you read a book about climate. Tests are subject to his opinion on how to grade. You will regret taking this class.
This class was awful. I attended every week and went to the tutoring sessions. He lectures the entire semester and you just take notes. I literally have two notebooks full of notes. There are 3 tests and a final, no homework just a ton of reading and he gets extremely sidetracked. Tests are all fill in the blank and 5 essay questions. Ridiculous.
The material is not hard, but the professor makes it very hard to learn. Most of it was memorization to pass the tests. I learned no concepts, just memorize some questions. His teaching style is not very useful and there is very little material as his lectures are very specific and the book is, like said "wrong". He is very knowledgeable.
This class was required for my major, or I would have never taken it. I'm surprised I did so well and can only surmise that the professor's ability to teach the material had something to do with it. I joined up with a study group, and completed the extra credit project. Prothero was helpful if I ever had questions and provided guidance when needed.
He is very experienced with magazine writing and being published but he can be condescending when you ask for help. Long and boring lectures that are common sense. You basically learn everything from the book. This should be an online course. Sitting in his classroom for 3 hours was torture. He just seems tired and uninspired.
Great teacher. knows his stuff. STUDY! you will not pass if you don't. write down everything he says in lecture, never miss a lecture. tests are fill in the blank, 5 essays, and 5-7 bonus. you need to invest in this class! you will learn a lot and it can be fun just pay attention! if you have questions ask, he will answer them! has been my favorite
Dont take from him during the summer. He even said he shouldnt teach in summer but still does. Crammed way too much work in. Lectured about things irrelevant to the class. Gave us a surprise test. Blatantly picked favoritesusually pretty girls. I worked harder in this class than Ive ever worked for another. Stay away.
A lot of people hype this class up to be harder than it really is. The entire class is only 4 tests plus an optional extra credit report and this prof will give you all the question topics before hand. If you study, this class is an easy A.
He marked a question wrong because I said bug instead of insect... I did not care for his class because he likes to strike fear in his students rather than be helpful. He teaches more about global warming than actual animals.
Basically, if you're into the subject you'll learn stuff. If not, it will likely be: memorize the test questions (he reads all the test questions beforehand) and hope you do well on the fill-in-the-blank test with some essay Qs. He offers a major EC project. Personally, I like Prothero and enjoyed the class but I know others despised it.
Avoid at all costs. The class is only 7 weeks long, and we spent 5 weeks on developing one article, and then he expects another article to be finished in 2 weeks. He doesn't really tell you what he's looking for in your writing, only that whatever you've given him isn't what he wanted. He is extremely pompous.
tough class, lecture intensive, hard test lectures are long and boring
Only grades for this class are 4 tests . it's optional to do a project for an extra 60 points, & 100% attendance gives adds 5%to your final grade. DO NOT MISS A CLASS; it's impossible to catch back up. Also, you HAVE TO ATTEND S.I. He'll ask questions on tests that you wont know the answer to w/out going. Put in the effort, you'll pass though
I thought Prothero was pretty good. If you went to the SI the tests were pretty easy. He offers a huge extra credit option. No homework besides reading a book. Do not miss this class though because he will deduct points and it's hard to catch up. Overall a pretty solid professor.
Great Teacher! Make sure you go to class! It's 4-5 tests only. Lecture and all reading material are required and used heavily. Participate in class and attend S.I. and you will pass!
I compared test results with the girl who sat next to me, and I was marked wrong on answers that she wasn't when our responses were basically the same... This is an entry level class and it was seriously one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Don't take this class during the summer.
He basically walks you through the course! He attempts to help everyone pass with a 50 point extra credit project and by going through the test basically word for word the class before you take the test. If you put in the time to study, you'll pass the class no problem.
Disrespectful, Arrogant, Rude. Not clear on what is going to be on the tests. Expects you to know what he is talking about at all times. Gets mad if you go to the bathroom during class. The test were 70 short answer, and 5 essay questions.
Not a well laid out class. Super tough on grading. He won't let you make up any work if you miss it. Would not recommend taking zoology from him.
Not supposed to be a crazy hard class because intro level, he makes this class extremely hard. Take someone else.
Tough grader
Didn't give feed back that was helpful, was a tough grader
Prothero isn't a bad teacher. If you attended class everyday, read both required textbooks books, and attended SI, you would pass the class. If you have a question on a test or felt like why did you dock me off this point, he will work with you. He also gives an optional extra credit paper worth 50 points. Make sure you attend SI because it helps!
He doesn't use slides or visual aids of any kind. He just lectures and he talks fast so it can be hard to keep up. Make an effort to go to the SI sessions, because it's the only way to do well in the class. It's definitely a class you have to work for, but if you are willing to put in the time, you can get an A. No homework, just study for tests.
This class was extremely difficult, he lectures the whole class and does not use any slides, so it's tough keeping up with him especially cause he goes too fast. I feel like I learned more from the S.I. sessions than I did from him. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss one day, you miss a whole chapter. For an entry level class, he expects a lot.
If you miss one class good luck, you'll be behind the rest of the class with no way of making it up. You'd be better off just reading the book than trying to keep up with him.
Don't take this class from this guy, he's awful. Disrespectful and completely inaccurate sometimes. The only way you'll pass is if you take crazy amazing notes and go to SI. His test questions are a cross between very vague and insanely specific. Again, don't take this class from him.
The only way to do well is to go to the SI sessions. Some material on the test is not covered in class and the only way to get it is through the SI. Great professor though. I learned a lot.
When I started this class I honestly wasn't too sure about the Professor. After a few weeks, I actually really started enjoying him. The lectures are good and he gets the class involved. Had some awesome class discussions, and if you follow along and make sure you pay attention to the reviews, you'll be fine.
Professor Prothero is Hiiiiiilarious. He's a very laid back dude who can seem ambiguous at times. You have to pay attention to his lectures and take good notes. GO TO S.I!! I didn't get the textbook, so I fully depended on my notes and the S.I. sessions. Also sit up front in his classes because he kinda mumbles. Great class, I learned A LOT!
There's no homework, only exams. Makes it very difficult to make sure you're learning what you need to. Moves way too quickly, covers up to 6 chapters in a single class. Test reviews aren't accurate and don't reflect what's on the actual exam.
For this course, he only grades on 4 things: 3 quizzes and 1 exam. That was the difficult part, but the course itself was fascinating. I also wasnt sure about answering number 4, Would you take this prof again? because Im not sure wether the issue was a with the extensive and specific material or his teaching methods.
Funny, witty professor. You have 3 quizzes and a final, no homework. This can make it either very hard to pass or very easy. GO TO SI! I passed with a B because of the SI sessions. They'll basically go over the quizzes word for word. He also talks very fast and makes it difficult to take notes, so use a laptop. Good professor, not an easy one.
Professor Prothero is an excellent professor, but he makes you work for your grade. You are graded only on 3 quizzes & a final, but if you don't go to class you're not going to pass. He doesn't use Canvas so if you don't go to class you're out of luck if you don't know someone in the class. Overall, Prothero was a good professor.
He was a great guy and professor, but you really have to study a lot in order to pass. He doesn't pass out any homework, but when it came to the test and quiz he would be very strict on the wording. He was a great professor overall, but you would have to work really hard and you need to go to SI to pass
Professor needs to change how he runs the class. No direction, no work done by him and still expects students to guess at what we are supposed to do and then are given snarky borderline offensive emails saying we didnt meet the expectations of the assignment. Needs improvement to class structure and effort
If you have quite literally any other option, take it. His tests are awful, short answer/essay questions only. You can get the right answer and still get no credit because he felt you weren't specific enough. I don't mind having to work for a grade and I'll probably get a B overall, but I hate this class and I hate him. Avoid at all costs.
I loved having Professor Prothero as a teacher! He is pretty old-school but quite funny and nice. Your entire grade is based on three quizzes and a final. The textbook is helpful but not required. GO TO SI SESSIONS TO SUCCEED IN THIS CLASS! There are concepts on the quizzes and tests that he does not cover in class. Overall loved him and his class!
Prothero is a fantastic professor and he really knows his stuff. The class was always very interesting and taught me a ton. He only gives three quizzes and the final exam the whole semester. This makes you really have to work for your grade. Prothero doesn't use canvas and gives verbal lectures. Make sure you attend class because you will fail!
Dr. Prothero is a pretty awesome & unique professor. The tests are difficult, but if you go to SI you will be just fine, the current SI is fantastic! He also gives a review of the exam in the class before you take it so you have an advantage if you take good notes. This class is easy to pass if you go to SI, she has many helpful notes & worksheets.
Professor was full of knowledge and experience, in everything but the actual class. He tested you on only things he said in class, dont even bother reading the book. I had study groups every week twice just to pass with a C, which was an average in that class. He doesnt adapt anything to the online world, everything is by hand. Dont take this.
When I saw this was a virtual class, I thought I would be on a zoom or google hangouts or similar platform. This professor hates technology, as in he won't use canvas, online platforms, ect. He does all of his lectures via e-mail, quiz sent via e-mail, and grades are only provided if asked. He will not post them in canvas. Won't Take him again!
I would absolutely NOT recommend this professor. He refuses to use canvas to everything is on email. You have to email him and request grades. There are only 3 quizzes and a final on your grade. There are no lectures so he prepared to teach yourself this entire course. Very touch grader. All tests and quizzes not multiple choice either. Hard class.
Horrible professor. He only uses email for literally everything. Your quizzes and tests are done over email. He refuses to learn canvas. I spent 12 hours on the final and barely passed it. Tough grader. Only 3 quizzes and a final go on your grade. So your entire semesters grade is only based on tests (not multiple choice all essay) do not recommend
